Rumor: 343 Industries Scrapping Halo Infinite Campaign DLCs After Losing 1/3 of Workforce

Matters have worsened for the Halo franchise’s future. According to a rumor, 343 Industries (343i) is scrapping Halo Infinite’s planned campaign DLCs and transitioning altogether to a supervisory “franchise coordinator” role, after having lost a third of its workforce during the recent layoffs. 343i’s roadmap for Halo Infinite’s multiplayer content in 2023 will reportedly remain unchanged.

343i has been experiencing significant leadership difficulties ever since the troubled launch of Halo Infinite. Last year, studio head Bonnie Ross announced her departure from the company ahead of the release of the Winter Update, leading to parent company Microsoft restructuring her role into three separate positions. In December, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer creative director Tom French left the company, and Head of Creative Joseph Staten has reportedly also made an exit as of yesterday.

The rumor, if true, puts a nail in Halo Infinite’s coffin: 343i has now lost a third of its workforce, including both internal staff and contractors. Long-term plans for Halo Infinite campaign DLCs were scrapped by studio lead Pierre Hintz after a cost-benefit analysis, which is stated as the likely reason for Staten’s exit.

Under Hintz, 343i will reportedly be focusing on supporting Halo Infinite’s multiplayer mode (which is already outsourced to Certain Affinity, Spearsoft, and other studios for the most part) while transitioning to a “franchise coordinator” role. This change of direction has reportedly been in motion since 2020, with 343i (along with Microsoft Game Publishing) contracting mutliple external studios to create “future Halo experiences.”

Despite reports of deprecation in favor of the Unreal Engine Halo Infinite’s Slipspace engine is still in place according to the rumor, and will be opened up to external studios working with the IP should they choose to use it. The game’s multiplayer plans for 2023 (the rumored Project Tatanka, Forge, and new seasons and maps) will remain unchanged.

What do you think of the Halo franchise’s new direction? Let us know in the comments below.

Over on the game’s official Trello board, here are some of the fixes being worked on by the studio:

Global Issues:

  • [All Platforms] Stuck Nuke: We’re investigating an issue causing Players to get stuck when attempting to activate the Nuke.
  • [All Platforms] Airstrike Killstreak: We’re investigating an issue where attempting to use the Airstrike Killstreak just as the Player finishes Reloading, the HUD will disappear.
  • [All Platforms] Gulag Respawn: We’re investigating an issue causing squad members returning from the Gulag to respawn further away from one another than intended.
  • [All Platforms] Most Wanted: We have disabled the Most Wanted Contract until further notice while we investigate an issue.

  • We’re aware of an issue where loadout and equipped items do not load into a match with a player but are back on-soldier after the match.
  • We’re aware of an issue where insured weapons are not equipping when loading into a match.
  • We’re aware of a Tac Map bug in Building 21.
  • We’re aware of an issue that kicks some party members after a successful exfil.

  • We are investigating an issue where some players cannot acquire additional camos in Gold, Platinum and Polyatomic tiers if they have already acquired enough camos to unlock the next tier. For example, if you have 51 Platinum camos, you are unable to earn additional Platinum camos because 51 is the number you need to unlock Polyatomic.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Deadpool DLC Set to Launch on January 26 Alongside New Story Missions

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is getting a new DLC on January 26, and it features none other than the wisecracking mercenary Deadpool. An iconic antihero in the Marvel franchise, Deadpool will usher in various story missions and new cosmetics.

Check out Deadpool’s shenanigans in this new spotlight trailer below.

The trailer includes some voice lines from Deadpool, some of which actually break the fourth wall and reference the fact that he’s in a video game. While the dialogue may seem strange and unexpected to those unfamiliar with Deadpool, this sort of bit is par for the course when it comes to the immortal assassin. He’s known to talk directly to the audience in comics and film, so it’s no surprise that he gets to do so in Midnight Suns, too.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of Deadpool and his humor, you can enjoy him as a playable character, with ten unique Hero abilities that give him a whole lot of personality. He will also come with his own set of cosmetics, so if you’re not a fan of the classic suit, you can spice it up with something more decorative or festive.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider – Slash to the Past (PC)

Hurriedly slapping a Metroidvania label into every action platformer game has turned into a deceiving trend. For some, Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider may fit in said category, when in fact it takes a page or two from the Strider and Shinobi books. Developer JoyMasher stays true to its identity and past works, striving for an accomplished old-school look and throwback arcade gameplay that zips along at a very fast pace. This is the kind of game that asks you to unleash your inner speedrunner and push for that record time, all within a dystopian setting with Japanese charm.

Revenge of the Cyber Ninja Warrior

Set in a totalitarian state where every whiff of resistance is deserving of capital punishment, there’s a glimpse of hope as the authoritarians release their latest weapon of oppression, the Moonrider. Contrary to expectations, this killing machine rebels against its creators and begins a journey to eliminate every super soldier. It’s a simple and effective payback plot that doesn’t get in the way of fun, with several showdowns offering some interesting moral exchanges, despite some brief Japanese voiceovers that will leave most players baffled, and the odd grammar error creeping in to break immersion just a tiny bit.

After a short tutorial to teach you the basics, Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider begins in a somewhat mild manner, as you escape the lab where you were assembled. It’s only after beating the first proper boss fight that the adventure shows its true potential, as several stages become accessible and pave the way for experimentation and discovery at your leisure.

Stages are not entirely linear either; the diversity on display is remarkably fresh and keeps the game flowing, allowing you to look elsewhere when faced by some frustrating sections. Nothing prevents you from trying a different zone to hone your skills and your character’s abilities – in the form of various chips, but also upgrades earned after defeating a boss – to later return to the level that was halting your progress.

Each level comes with some sort of twist, not only due to the diverse enemy types but also thanks to new mechanics that are introduced exclusively for those areas, including a hovering platform that we can maneuver through several traps. The Fallen Ruins level has a flying mech following you throughout at a distance and firing at you, as if the main threats weren’t troubling enough.

One of the most surprising areas will turn this game on its head, as your tired feet are given due rest and replaced by a speedy motorcycle in a third-person perspective. Iwondonilo City is the level where you may fondly remember the bygone era of Super Hang-On and Road Rash, but with a neat futuristic flair and bullets, lots of them. It’s an enjoyable change of pace and gives you some breathing room from the side-scrolling sections. However, it’s impossible to ignore the way our bullets bend just as the road twists and turns, as if miraculously guided by futuristic tech; most likely, this is simply due to a stint of lazy design. Awkward oversights like these may also be considered a meaningful part of the old-school games tribute? For the sake of coherence, let’s go with a yes here.

Fast paced and primed for skillful gameplay, there’s little to reproach on Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider’s platforming sections. Learning the enemy patterns and every pitfall that comes your way is an irrefutable delight, as the level layouts are honed to keep us rushing through every obstacle, becoming second nature after a few runs. This doesn’t mean that it’s sheer brilliance all the time – some levels can be quite straightforward, but the outcome is positively solid.

It’s not an exceedingly hard game either, certainly not the Souls-like of action platformers, now that this label is also tied to almost every game posing a complicated challenge. If there’s one thing that I find lacking is the ability to lower the camera view as you crouch, giving you a better outlook on what lies below. It’s not a critical issue, as deaths by falling are few and far between – you respawn at the price of a mere unit from your health bar – but a little foreshadowing would always be better than a blind drop.

When Everything Else Fails, Spam the Boss

One of the best things about Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is that you will frequently find yourself engaged in exciting showdowns, usually more than one per area. Apart from the appealing pixel art design, bosses pose a major threat that considerably varies in difficulty. Some of them are easy to eliminate after patiently learning their move set, others require expertise to deftly dodge their strikes and perfectly time our attacks. These are the key moments that you should look forward to, but not everything is ideal.

The problem is that some bosses can be entirely disregarded, as their health isn’t up to par with our abilities. Instead of flawlessly timed dodges and slashes, you can confidently sneak up on the boss and spam your hits until it crumbles. Having some easier but lengthier confrontations would be one thing; allowing you to win the fight in a few seconds by resorting to the oldest and cheapest trick in the book is another thing entirely.

The pixel art style is one of the high points in Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, a direction that developer JoyMasher keeps on honing game after game. Although it doesn’t quite rank as a remarkable accomplishment, it’s a great aesthetic overall that will mostly please fans of 90s console games with a penchant for futuristic high-tech design with a Japanese flair. The thumping soundtrack and good sound effects round up the package, lending that extra oomph to this pure tribute to old-school classics.

Rage Against the Machines

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is an accomplished retro side-scrolling game delivering on fast and frantic gameplay. This is a true love letter to classic games of the 16-bit era, with slick controls and a perceptible effort to provide some much-welcome freedom of choice and range to the adventure. While its visual appeal may be somewhat confined to the so-called veteran player segment, it remains a fun and challenging experience that is ultimately designed for record-breaking and record bragging.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • An accomplished retro-styled look
  • Tribute to games such as Shinobi and Strider
  • Fast, furious, and designed for speedrunning
  • Several interesting boss fights…

Cons:

  • … But some bosses can be defeated by spamming attacks

Battlefield 2042 Class System Rework Weapon Proficiencies, Loadouts, Balance Explained by DICE

In case you didn’t know, DICE is shaking up Battlefield 2042 in a major way later this month by taking out Specialist abilities and replacing it with a more traditional class system that Battlefield fans are more familiar with. Today, DICE has explained the Battlefield 2042 class system rework and how it will affect loadouts, balance and more.

Battlefield 2042 Class System Rework:

Here’s an example of how the change affects Specialists:

Rocket Launchers being placed under within the Engineer Class will now ensure that while only a subset of our Specialists will be able to use Rocket Launchers – there will be more readability to who is carrying a launcher and allows for a vehicle player to adjust their strategy for that but also allows for further balancing for vehicles as time goes on.

While we’re on the subject of Rocket Launchers however, we do wish to note that while Lis is an Engineer, she will continue to be unable to use alternate Rocket Launchers as she is already equipped with the G-84 TGM Specialty. If you’re fond of playing as Lis, you can still select from the AT Mine, EOD Bot or C5 Explosives as your Gadget!

DICE also explained that with this class rework, players should now find it easier to determine what kind of player class they’re facing off.

As an example, with Irish moving from Engineer to the Support role, you will now be able to understand that if you encounter him on the field – he may be running with an Ammo Crate, Health Crate, Smoke Launcher or Claymores. Whilst also having the ability to revive anyone in the field, rather than only your Squadmates.

This in turn works for the enemy, as they’ll know to prioritize taking down the Support player first to prevent their team from staying in the fight through revives. We have also included Class Icons above all soldiers, allowing for more transparency on who you’re up against. Keep those eyes peeled!

Another thing being inserted are Weapon Proficiencies, which incentivizes what type of weapon each class should use without locking any specific weapon class from a class.

Assault + Assault Rifles: 3 Extra Magazines
Engineer + LMG: Improved Dispersion while Crouched or Prone
Support + SMG: Faster Draw Time
Recon + Sniper Rifles: Immediate, constant and steady scope

The intent of Weapon Proficiencies is not to dictate what you equip yourself with, but rather to encourage and provide a recommendation on what may work best and bring further Class identity for those who enjoy that type of gameplay. In doing so, you will benefit from a passive improvement that should make your role more proficient.

Another major thing changing are loadouts. Players will see these change as part of patch 3.2.0.

Loadouts will now be unified per Class. This means that if you were to alter your choice of Weaponry, Class Gadgets or Throwables for Crawford within your Loadout, then that same selection will be available to you when you choose to play as Boris as both are Engineers.

When Update 3.2.0 arrives you’ll find that your current Loadouts have been reset to their default status so you can focus on rebuilding them specific for each Class.

There’s no release date set just yet for patch 3.2 other than end of January, but once we know more, we’ll let our readers know.

New Dying Light 2 Lunar New Year-Themed Gear Available to Claim for Free Till Jan. 31

Dying Light 2 is celebrating the Lunar New Year with some sweet new gear, and it’s free to claim for the rest of the month. The Dying Light 2 Lunar New Year-themed gear includes a mask and a sword, both of which are styled based on sleek Chinese designs.

Here’s a closer look at the Raging Dragon sword and Lunar Rabbit Mask:

dying light 2 lunar new year

Both the sword and the mask look fairly unique, and the almost blood-like red from the mask gives it an almost horror-like vibe. The sword is also fairly unique, with a shape and design that’s different from the weapons you’d normally find in Dying Light 2.

To actually claim these items, you’re going to need a TechlandGG (TGG) account, though the process is pretty straightforward. After creating an account, all you need to do is connect the account to the platform you play on and you can claim the items via TGG. You can follow the steps for this process through the official page here.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The sword and mask will be available to claim until January 31 7PM CET. For other timezones, that’s January 31 6PM GMT, January 31 1PM ET, and February 1 2AM HKT.

  • #2 You can’t select any of the portal weapons (not sure if this counts as a stealth change but it’s sneaky and it is a change). [NEEDS FURTHER VERIFICATION]
  • #3 I don’t seem to be able to change squads… Not sure if a patch change or a bug or what though… Two games in a row now and I can’t right click my name to change squad. Meh. – it appears that it’s buggy on PC and some can change it and some can’t. On consoles it seems like this option has been removed. (Tested by multiple users on PC and PS5 platforms)

= On Series X|S they changed it a few updates ago so you can only change squad when downed or in the redeployment screen and no longer when alive. So, the option to press X to change squad is only available when you select yourself in the squads and players menu when downed / redeploying.

  • #4 New revive request symbol animation
  • #5 New request pick up symbol animation
  • #6 New issue: Game is sometimes crashing to desktop immediately after getting past loading splash screens. Happened three times tonight. Works with relaunch.
  • #7 When you get a kill with 12g Automatic, the kill does not register to this weapon, it just shows [] on screen, where it should be [12g Automatic]. The same thing goes for defibulator kill in BF3, the kill log just shows [], which may hinder some people from unlocking certain portal weapon, if i remember correctly, a protal weapon requires 20 kills or revives with BF3 defibulator.
  • #8 some players can’t use new Vault 1942 guns.
  • #9 Is it me or the viewmodel for guns is different? – YES IT IS!
  • #10 There was previously a bug where you couldnt do the tac reload on the m1 garand while playing as the 1942 faction. It seems fixed now

This seems to be a smaller list compared to previous stealth changes list, but if more are found, we’ll update the article.

Thanks,  ANGRYlalocSOLDIE!

GTA: The Trilogy Now Available on Steam; Will Launch on Epic Games Later This Month

Fans of the GTA franchise can now try out the original games via Steam through Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, a bundle that includes all three modernized versions of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The trilogy bundle is currently available only through Steam at the moment, but you’ll be able to get it via the Epic Games Store sometime later this month. You can order a copy of the trilogy via Steam here. The Steam bundle will be on sale through February 2, so pick it up before that point if you’re interested in trying the games out.

The trilogy brings in enhancements to the classic GTA games with controls similar to GTA 5 if you’re used to those. It also supports 13 total languages, including English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Spain and Mexico), and Portuguese (Brazil), to name a few.

Because the bundle is available on Steam, you’ll also be able to play all three GTA games via a Steam Deck if you own one. If you missed playing Vice City on your PSP back in the day, you can relive that experience by playing via a Steam Deck.

Aside from Steam and Epic Games, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via the Rockstar Games Launcher.

EA Sports PGA Tour Release Date Revealed Alongside Gameplay Trailer, Set for March 23 Launch

EA Sports PGA Tour, the upcoming realistic golf game, just got a new gameplay trailer along with a release date announcement. The EA Sports PGA Tour release date is set for March 23 of this year, and players can look forward to the game’s realistic physics and gameplay systems as showcased in the gameplay trailer.

In the new trailer, we get four minutes of gameplay footage along with an explanation of the game’s unique systems that keep the golfing experience as realistic as possible. You can also check out the teaser trailer from a few months back here.

The trailer dives into the game’s Pure Strike system, which uses official professional player and game data to recreate the strikes of every golf player in EA Sports PGA Tour. This means that gameplay can feel very different depending on which golf player your play as.

Aside from Pure Strike, the game features more realistic course and golf ball physics that emulate the trajectory and movement of the ball in real life. If you’re an avid IRL golfer, you can expect the golf ball to fly and move as it would on an actual golf course.

EA Sports PGA Tour will contain elements found in many other traditional sport-based video games, including a career mode that follows your Road to the Masters. You also get to play in different iconic courses throughout the world, letting you experience the feeling of playing professionally.

EA Sports PGA Tour is set to launch on March 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The Next Two Overwatch 2 Heroes Will Be Supports, Game Director Confirms

Overwatch 2 will see a focus on more support heroes in the coming seasons, and according to director Aaron Keller, the next two Overwatch heroes are going to be Supports.

Keller revealed the roles of the two upcoming heroes in an interview with NME. According to him, they “bring some things to the game that we haven’t seen before – some new mechanics and really exciting ways of interacting with your own team.”

It’s worth noting that this actually isn’t the first time we’ve learned of Overwatch 2’s goal of adding more support heroes into the game. A recent tweet from Lead Hero Designer Alec Dawson mentioned that for the foreseeable future, “every four heroes you’ll see 1 Tank, 1 DPS, and 2 Supports.”

With the next two heroes being confirmed to be Supports, it will be interesting to see how the competitive meta evolves as the Overwatch World Cup returns later this year. Hopefully, the future roster additions will affect the game as positively as Keller envisions.
