Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion Update 1.001 Brings Free October Update Earlier

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion Update 1.001 has just been released, and although Marvelous Inc. initially planned for the update to drop next week, they decided to release it a little earlier.

In addition to the new cosmetics and boss, this update also addresses some bug fixes.

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion Update 1.001.000 Patch Notes

Originally scheduled to release on October 2, 2025, the first major free update for Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion, update 1.001 (or as devs refer to it, 1.1.0) has been released. This update not only brings some brand-new content in the form of new boss fights, but also addresses several recently reported bugs and makes additional changes to some of the in-game mechanics. Here are the notes of everything included in this update.

New Boss
Grausam RT: Ω has been added as a new boss enemy.
“Battle Grausam RT: Ω” will be added to the battle simulator at the base.

Additions and adjustments

  • Added an option that enables the adjustment of Camera Acceleration and Camera Inertia degree.
  • Changed the Horizontal and Vertical Camera Sensitivity settings so that they can be adjusted separately.
  • In the early mission “The Bout with Ash,” weapons can now be obtained inside the Coliseum.
  • Adjusted the number of wreckages displayed, as well as communication frequency, to improve online loading times.
  • Adjusted container positions in missions such as “Subject: Job offer! Heavy lifting.”

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed the behavior of Rebellion in Teos Omos Desert.
  • Fixed an issue that falsely displays “EULA Violation” when displaying a network error.
  • Fixed an issue where some event scenes could not load models in time
  • Fixed an issue where some supply bases became unusable.
  • Fixed an issue where battle music would not stop playing.
  • Fixed an issue where showing Grausam’s whole body on the screen led to a processing lag.
  • Fixed an issue where approaching the All-Seeing One didn’t start the battle in multiplayer.
  • Fixed other minor bugs.

As for when the next major update is arriving, that’ll be on October 16 (assuming it doesn’t drop earlier) and will introduce two new bosses and more cosmetics. The game’s first paid expansion pack is scheduled to follow in November, with another free update planned for December.

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is now available worldwide. For those interested in reading our thoughts, be sure to check out our Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion review.

Annapurna Interactive Reveals Three New Games: D-topia, People of Note, Demi and the Fractured Dream

Annapurna Interactive, the publisher that brought us Stray and Outer Wilds, along with countless other hits, has just revealed three brand-new games during their Annapurna Direct showcase.

While none of them are Stray 2 (sad cat face), the new titles do look to be an exciting mix of genres, from a turn-based musical RPG, a cute and cozy puzzle-adventure, to an action-adventure title inspired by classic Zelda games.

Annapurna Direct Recap

About D-topia

Step into a future where happiness is curated by artificial intelligence, in this gentle-paced puzzle adventure.

The Utopia Project was created in the interest of maximizing human happiness and comfort. As the newest residential Facilitator at D-topia, your role is to resolve issues around the residential community. Tackle fun logic-based puzzles to resolve mechanical issues and keep the facilities running smoothly and meet the many vibrant residents, each with their own unique story and personal struggle.

But what happens when problems go beyond the mechanical? How will your choices impact the wellbeing of the residents, and the future of humanity? In a world of curated happiness, what does it mean to find purpose?

About People of Note

In this bold turn-based RPG, where musical numbers meet thrilling combat, join pop singer Cadence on her quest for stardom.

After being shut out of the Noteworthy Song Contest, Cadence realizes that her solo act might not be enough for the judges. As she travels across Note to the Rock City of Durandis, the EDM City of Lumina, and more, Cadence fills out her band with eclectic and powerful musicians from lands afar. But something’s brewing in the distance…the Harmonic Convergence is playing havoc with the world’s musical energies, and dark forces are working behind the scenes to disrupt Note’s natural harmonies. It wasn’t in the set list, but Cadence and the others need to step up and make sure music itself still has a future on stage.

In People of Note, experience turn-based combat like never before: each battle is an interactive musical performance with evolving combat conditions, real-time rhythm-based attacks, and genre-bending mashup attacks!

About Demi and the Fractured Dream

In this enchanting action-adventure, play as Demi and venture through the world of Somnus.

As a Voidsent, Demi can harness the powers of the void. While the void curse eats away at you, it also empowers you. Guided by a mysterious voice that whispers from beyond, Demi must travel the wondrous yet perilous realms, from the wind-swept spires of the Desert Kingdom to the spiritual waters of the Marsh Kingdom, to slay the three Accursed Beasts and stave off a world-ending awakening.

Tackle dungeons filled with environmental puzzles, use your wide arsenal of attacks, spells, and tools to vanquish void monsters, and defeat the three Accursed Beasts of legend. As your story unfolds, what will you unveil about your own role in this world?

That’s all the new games revealed during Annapurna Direct—definitely some interesting titles here, ones worth giving a try whenever they release. I’m sure most eyes are on Demi and the Fractured Dream, given the clear The Legend of Zelda inspiration it has going on, but People of Note does seem to have a pretty unique idea, being both a turn-based and a rhythm game. That’s not a genre mash-up you typically see, and I would love to see how they manage to pull that off.

Then there’s D-topia, one of the more cozier games revealed at this event. Hey, it might not be Stray 2 by any degree, but it does feature a rather chunky cat, so what is there not to like about it already?

All of these titles are scheduled to come out “soon.”

As a reminder, the Black Ops 7 Early Access Beta begins on Thursday, October 2, 2025, and the Open Beta starts on Sunday, October 5, 2025, on all platforms, running through until October 8. Players will then have to wait until launch to play more of it, which fortunately won’t be far off, as Call of Duty Black Ops 7 officially launches on November 14, 2025.

For those wondering if cosmetics from previous games will carry over, Activision has confirmed that they will not have a “carry forward” feature for this year’s release, at least not at launch.

In other Black Ops 7 news, Activision has cancelled a “big brand” skin collab due to the community backlash on outrageous skins.

While the game isn’t technically out yet outside of early access, Electronic Arts has released EA Sports FC 26 new update 1.000.004, which is the game’s first patch.

Given the game isn’t out until September 26, this can be considered the soccer sim’s day-one update. Don’t expect any major gameplay changes from this, as the game isn’t even out among the masses yet.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Mega Man DLC Announced for 2026; Season Pass Breakdown Confirms Incoming Characters

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has officially been released, and while there’s plenty to play through, SEGA is already looking at expanding its massive roster. And it’s not just through characters they own, as the first major Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds DLC has been revealed to be a collaboration with Capcom’s own Mega Man franchise.

That’s right, the Blue Bomber is coming to Sonic Racing, and he won’t be alone as his long-time rival-mentor, Proto Man, is also gearing up for the tracks.

Mega Man and Proto Man Are Back, But This Time They’re Taking Their Fight to the Tracks

As previously leaked, Mega Man is coming to Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, with the official announcement happening during today’s State of Play event. He’ll be joined by Proto Man, along with a Dr. Wily track that will be arriving sometime in 2026.

Given where the collab is slotted in the Seasn Pass image at the end of the trailer, we might get one of the other collaborations ahead, those being either Minecraft, SpongeBob, or Pac-Man, though that’s remained to be confirmed.

As for what the Season Pass contains, here’s a breakdown of all the confirmed collaborations and characters arriving in the future.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Season Pass

  • Minecraft
    • Playable characters include Alex, Steve, Creeper as well as a Minecraft- themed course and vehicle
  • SpongeBob SquarePants
    • Playable characters include SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick as well as a SpongeBob SquarePants themed course and vehicle
  • Pac-Man
    • Playable characters include Pac-Man and rival ghosts as well as PAC-MAN themed course and vehicle
  • Mega Man
    • Playable characters include Mega Man, Proto Man, and a Mega Man themed course and vehicle
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    • More details to come!
  • Avatar Legends
    • More details to come!
  • Sonic Prime Playable Characters
    • Knuckles the Dread
    • Rusty Rose
    • Tails Nine

Not a bad set of guest characters, if I say so myself – quite a surprise, even for some of them. Personally, I’m excited about the Mega Man collab as the character and franchise have been one of my favorites. It was the series that got me into gaming after all, when the originals first came out in the early ’90s.

Regarding a release date, no confirmation has been made beyond a 2026 release. If you want DLC for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds that’s available now, check out this free gift by SEGA.

Marvel’s Wolverine Gets Re-revealed With Gameplay, and Will Release in Fall 2026

After years of hiding, Marvel’s Wolverine finally resurfaces today during Sony’s State of Play! As if there was any doubt, our report of the game releasing in 2026 has been proven to be legit, as Sony has confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine will be releasing in Fall 2026.

Alongside the release date reveal, we also get our first gameplay look, and it’s looking wild.

Marvel’s Wolverine Doesn’t Shirk From Violence

The trailer’s description reads, “Become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes – unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination – to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be.”

As you can imagine, this official gameplay look is vastly different from the leaked test gameplay from last year.

It’s super violent, which seems to be a departure from Insomniac’s past works, and you know what? We’re digging it!

Expect more Marvel’s Wolverine coverage here on MP1st, as we’ll be scrounging up info as best as we can,

Another PS5-exclusive that got its gameplay debut is Housemarque’s Saros, which you’ll want to watch as well.

Housemarque’s Saros Gets Gameplay Debut and Release Date

Housemarque, the studio behind the PlayStation hit, Returnal, has finally given us our first real look at their upcoming title, Saros, with an all-new gameplay trailer during today’s State of Play presentation.

That’s not the only thing they had to share, as the official release date for Saros has also been revealed.

March 2026 Just Got a Lot Bigger With Saros

As revealed during today’s State of Play event, Housemarque’s Saros is set to arrive on March 20, 2026. This release date is accompanied by a gameplay reveal that looks strikingly familiar to Returnal (like, very much so).

About the game:

“Arjun Devraj (Rahul Kohli), a Soltari enforcer, fights to survive on the lost colony of Carcosa under an ominous eclipse. Shape shifting biomes and hostile ruins set the stage for a fast-paced, cinematic action experience where every encounter demands precision and adaptability.

Combat unfolds as a fluid dance of dodges, shields, and parries, paired with a high-tech arsenal built of human and alien weaponry. Master enemy patterns, evolve your strategy, and face off against spectacular bosses that push every skill to the edge.

Death is not the end, with permanent upgrades, evolving equipment and the “Second Chance” system that allows you to always come back stronger.”

Saros will release exclusively on the PS5 and PS5 Pro on March 20, 2026.

Another thing that was unveiled is our first good look at Battlefield 6’s campaign, which was also unveiled at State of Play.

Battlefield 6 Campaign Shown Off Alongside First Story Details

As promised, Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios have revealed our first look at Battlefield 6’s campaign during today’s State of Play, which is technically happening during the Tokyo Game Show.

Not only do we get our first look at gameplay, but we also see some of the characters in the game, as well as our first glimpse of the story synopsis.

Check out the mystery and the action that will greet players in BF6’s campaign.

Battlefield 6 Campaign Looks to Bring Back the Serious Military Shooter

Update: More story details have been revealed by EA thanks to the press release.

The year is 2027, and the world is on the edge of chaos. The once unshakeable NATO alliance is crumbling, its foundations cracked by distrust and uncertainty. Financial instability, proxy wars, and political disputes have left some countries adrift in a sea of geopolitical turmoil. Amidst this chaos, a formidable force emerges – Pax Armata – A massive private military corporation unafraid to cross lines, with deep pockets and the latest tech seizes the opportunity to step into the power vacuum.

The single-player campaign takes place across multiple pulse-pounding missions, as players step into the boots of Dagger 13, a squad of elite US Marine raiders taking the fight to Pax Armata. With adrenaline-charged set pieces taking place around the world from Brooklyn to Cairo, this is the classic blockbuster single-player campaign, with jaw-dropping moments and explosive action, on an unparalleled scale.

The game’s description reads, “Campaign returns on a global scale. Step into Dagger 13, an elite squad of Marine Raiders, determined to stop Pax Armata in Battlefield 6’s single-player campaign. Storm the beaches of Gibraltar, take to the streets of Brooklyn for intense gunfights, perform a HALO jump into enemy territory, destruction, scale, and tight squad play shape every choice. Only in Battlefield.”

While the main draw of Battlefield 6 will be the multiplayer, the single-player looks to be a banger as well.

Speaking of multiplayer, console players will be glad to know that the developers have implemented their own method for detecting Cronus cheaters on consoles. While that’s good news, EA has confirmed that there will be no console-only crossplay feature for the game, though we’re hoping that changes post-release.

Battlefield 6 will be released on October 10 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

“Big Brand” Skin Collabs for Black Ops 7 Cancelled After Backlash

It appears that Activision and Treyarch Studios were serious when they stated that they wanted skins for Black Ops 7 to feel “authentic,” as it has been revealed that they have already canceled some of their upcoming collaborations.

Don’t rule them out just yet, though, as the game will likely still feature some, as long as they “fit” the universe.

Treyarch Plans on Keeping the Call of Duty Experience Authentic

Speaking in a recent interview with CharlieIntel, Treyarch’s Senior Director of Production, Yale Miller, confirmed that the studio had already cancelled some of its lined-up collabs after some recent discussions.

“There are opportunities that we have had lined up that, after some of our conversations, we straight up turned down. Big, big brands, big things, and we’re like, ‘No, we’re not gonna do that because it just doesn’t fit,” Miller said. “All intentions [are] to stick to stuff that we can hand on our heart, say, ‘Yeah, that feels Black Ops…That’s really our goal. And I think that’s a good clarification versus grounded.”

This is fantastic news for players, as Call of Duty over the last few years has been getting rather ridiculous with some of the collaboration skins. The latest being the TV show Beavis and Butt-Head, which, for many, was finally pushing the collab skins a bit too far. I’d argue that the line was crossed a long time ago, but it’s good to see that Activision and its studios are finally starting to listen to the recent feedback around them.

Of course, it doesn’t help that Battlefield 6 is likely putting some pressure on them with their “authentic” skins and players reacting positively to them. Speaking of which, this is something we discussed in an opinion piece that we think gamers should give a read.

Let’s hope this new focus on “authentic” skins in Black Ops 7 is a sign of things to come, not just a one-off change. It’s a promising move that shows they’re listening to player feedback and prioritizing the game’s core feel. After all, a Call of Duty game about covert operations and gritty espionage doesn’t quite work when you’re fighting someone dressed up as a cartoon character.

Of course, with Black Ops 7 sales apparently trailing Battlefield 6, this might be what prompted Activision to finally listen to the community in the first place. But a win is a win, right?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 arrives on November 14, 2025, with a multiplayer beta scheduled to kick off in early October.

Monster Hunter Wilds Title Update 3 Arrives Sept. 29 With Final Fantasy XIV Collaboration

The next major Monster Hunter Wilds content drop, Title Update 3, has a release date, and it’s coming next week!

While the update will introduce new monsters, cosmetics, and event quests, the biggest surprise is the Final Fantasy XIV Online collaboration, where players will be able to take on the Omega Planetes.

This is the second straight collab for the game, after last month’s Street Fighter 6 crossover content.

Realms Collide in Monster Hunter Wilds Title Update 3

As revealed during TGS 2025, Monster Hunter Wilds Title Update  3 arrives on September 29, 2025, and is set to introduce the following content:

  • The update features a collaboration with FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, where you’ll fight the boss Omega Planetes and encounter unique mechanics from the other game.
  • Two new jobs from FFXIV are available: the Dark Knight and the Pictomancer. You can become a Dark Knight by using the Bale Armor, and a Pictomancer by using the “Soul of the Pictomancer” item.
  • The update also includes a permanent Arch-tempered Nu Udra Event Quest, new quests with rarity 8 materials, a Seregios Challenge Quest, and an Arch-tempered Nu Udra Free Challenge Quest.
  • New cosmetics are available, including a pendant, gesture, Palico and Seikret gear, and four nostalgic gestures as free DLC.
  • Looking ahead, the Festival of Accord: Dreamspell event is coming this fall, and Title Update 4 in December will introduce the monster Gogmazios.

Of course, this isn’t everything that will be included in the update, as you can expect to see plenty of bug fixes and, hopefully, further performance optimizations. We’re sure some balancing changes will be arriving in this update too, and it won’t be long before we get our hands on the patch notes, as the update drops on all platforms next week.

It’s a perfect time to be a Final Fantasy fan, as Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (read our review) will also be released on September 30, 2025. Soon after, we’ll also get the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade and Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox Series X}S, with 2026 looking like a bigger year for the franchise with even more releases.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 Announced for 2026; Includes Spin-Off Title “Dark Ties”

Well, it’s official, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is remaking Yakuza 3 and giving it the Kiwami treatment. Set to arrive this upcoming February, Yakuza Kiwami 3 is a complete overhaul of the original Yakuza 3, giving it not only modernized visuals but also bringing plenty of new gameplay mechanics, features, and entirely new quests and activities.

But perhaps the biggest surprise is that the studio is also working on a spin-off that’ll be included with the remake, Yakuza 3 Gaiden: Dark Ties.

Dark Ties Sees Players Take on the Role of Yakuza 3’s Villain

As announced during the RGG Summit last night, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is remaking Yakuza 3 with a new entry in the Kiwami remakes. The title, dubbed Yakuza Kiwami 3, will feature a wide range of improvements, from overhauled visuals and gameplay refinements, including a new fighting style, to English dubbing and even new mini-games. Additionally, this will be the first title in the Yakuza series to utilize motion capture, allowing the game to deliver even more believable facial expressions and performances.

But that’s not all this remake is coming with, as it will come with a brand-new spinoff entry called Yakuza 3 Gaiden: Dark Ties. The twist? We’ll be playing as Yoshitaka Mine, the antagonist of Yakuza Kiwami 3, as we learn about his journey and discover how he became the villain leading into Yakuza 3.

While Dark Ties is included with Yakuza Kiwami 3, it is a separate, standalone adventure from the game, meaning players will be able to start either Dark Ties or Kiwami 3 when they start the game.

Both titles are launching on February 11, 2026, for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.

Gears of War: Reloaded New Minor Update 1.008.001 Released on Sept. 24

While The Coalition released a new update for Gears of War: Reloaded last week that fixed the squad achievement progression issue, the developers have issued a new one today, and this one has been released without much fanfare.

Players will see it as Gears of War: Reloaded update 1.008.001, and this is a small download across consoles and PC, so don’t expect any new content.

Gears of War: Reloaded Update 1.008.001 Silently Pushed Out

Gears of War: Reloaded Update 1.007.001

The Coalition has not acknowledged today’s patch even hours after it was released. There is a chance the studio will release the changelog later, but don’t be surprised if they don’t mention it.

One Steam user said this fixed Linux performance regression, though it’s not certain if Steam Deck was affected. Apparently, frame-rates were fixed with the update and uitlizes the GPU “properly.”

Some of the bugs or issues still plaguing the game that have yet to be resolved include:

  • Bluetooth stuttering issue
  • Weapon Collector challenge bugged
  • Level 1 lobby glitch where a player earns XP but reverts back to level 1 in the lobby

Some other issues that might boil down to preference include SBMM (skill-based matchmaking) not really optimized for fun play, the Gnasher not working as intended (no git gud comments, please).

We’ve reached out to the studio to determine what was specifically fixed, and if we receive any updates, we’ll update the article with the new information.

If you notice any specific fixes or changes, leave a comment below and let us know.

Despite the issues, the game remains solid, as detailed in our review.

Rematch New Update on Sept. 24 Drops Season 1 Hotfix via Patch 1.201.001

Following the release of  Rematch’s Season 1 patch yesterday, Sloclap has released the first hotfix for the new season, fixing issues related to the Battle Pass.

The patch itself will show up as Rematch update version 1.201.001 on consoles and PC, and this should be a small download.

Read on for the specific changes made with today’s Rematch patch.

Changes

  • Fixed an issue where the S0 Title, Banner and Background from the Battle Pass’ endgame tiers could not be equipped.

Expect More Patch for Rematch Throughout Season 1

Rematch's Update for June 23

While a hotfix was released to amend issues with the Battle Pass, expect more patches to be released in the coming days and weeks, as there are quite a number of issues that are tied to the Season 1 patch.

Known Issues (as of Sept. 24)

  • Wrong animation triggered on ball control during a turn.
  • On PS5, Custom Match Participants will temporarily disappear from the Lobby after transferring Host role.
  • Using the Standing Tackle input right after releasing the Sprint input still results in a sliding tackle.
  • In very rare cases, the player is unable to take possession of the ball unless they reconnect to the match.
  • Some bundle titles and backgrounds have no description
  • Pushball exploit present upon cancelling Dribble while MC is facing backwards from the camera.
  • When completing a chapter the screen isn’t instantly moved to the next phase.
  • AI tackles go through the Player’s dribble during the “Protect Ball” Workshop.
  • For now, there is no way to add a friend directly from the squad header.
  • AI performs a successful distant sliding tackle upon performing specific steps in “Protect Ball” workshop.
  • Error lacks context when trying to add as a friend a player who blocked us.
  • In specific cases, the Goalkeeper invulnerability can be present outside of the goal area.
  • Extra Effort can be cancelled if a Push Ball input happens at the same time.
  • Using Extra Effort while diving as the Goalkeeper sometimes cancels the dive animation.
  • Last Attack sometimes resolves earlier than it should.
  • The highest stat feedback in the scoreboard isn’t always accurate.
  • Extra Effort will lock the player from moving depending on the input.
  • The crosshair size may appear too big, despite changing the associated settings.

If Sloclap releases a new patch, expect it here on MP1st.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Review – Revisiting a Classic

Once nearly ending just as it was getting started, the Final Fantasy franchise is still going strong today with numerous mainline entries and spin-offs over the years. While it was not the first spin-off, one of the most well-regarded in the series has always been Final Fantasy Tactics on the original PlayStation, which was released back in 1997.

This game not only garnered a few semi-sequels of its own on the Game Boy Advance, but also received an enhanced port on the PSP as Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions in 2007, a decade after the original released.

Now, 18 years later, one of the best entries in the entire series is getting new life on modern platforms with the release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, which is more than a visual upgrade.

Choose Your Version

Like many remakes and remasters, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles offers players the opportunity to choose whether to play the game with the Classic version of the game that has the PS1 visuals and the English translation from the War of the Lions release, or play the updated The Ivalice Chronicles version that has been created just for this release.

This choice must be made from the main menu of the game, where you have to choose which one you want immediately. There are no cross-saves between the two, unfortunately, making you have to start the game entirely over if you want to switch visual styles. I was hoping to see a way to switch art styles like we’ve seen in a number of remakes over time, but that is not available here at all due to some new features in the modern version.

Considering Final Fantasy Tactics is older and a lot of people likely have not gotten the opportunity to play it in the past, we’ll start by going over the game itself and then break down the new features and such that set apart The Ivalice Chronicles and Classic versions within this package.

Final Fantasy Tactics is a turn-based tactical RPG, similar to other franchises like Fire Emblem, Ogre Battle, and Disgaea. However, Final Fantasy Tactics is often cited as the tactical RPG that really made an impact in the Western world. This is likely largely due to the Final Fantasy name that was just coming off the major success and hype of Final Fantasy VII, while also maintaining the high level of storytelling that has been a key to making the franchise so popular over the years.

The world of Ivalice is the setting for Final Fantasy Tactics, which anybody who has played Final Fantasy XII should recognize as the same world. Following Final Fantasy VII and the subsequent Final Fantasy VIII, which featured a more modern setting, Final Fantasy Tactics had a setting inspired by the Middle Ages, returning to the true world of fantasy that the series began with. This game begins as the Fifty Years’ War has just ended, but a new war is now forming over who should lead Ivalice in the aftermath. The Black Lion Prince Goltana and White Lion Prince Larg are vying for the throne, which leads to the actual War of the Lions as a result.

Ramza serves as the main player character in Final Fantasy Tactics, who is a noble born of the Beoulve family, and is dragged into all of this mess. Much of the story becomes a case of who is really in the right, as the noblemen feel they are always in the right, while you have other parties like the Corpse Brigade that many commoners join to try and fight back against the idea of tyrannical rulers. As someone who has played numerous Final Fantasy games over the years and had not previously played through Tactics, I was absolutely captivated by the story from very early on and couldn’t stop playing. There are twists and deaths that you never see coming, which is why you should play without reading any more into the story than what I have provided so that you can truly enjoy it for the first time.

The structure found within Final Fantasy Tactics is that you have story segments, then you can move between locations on a world map, where you just move point to point. The next story segments are marked with a specific icon, while other locations are also worth visiting for a few reasons. When you usually first visit a new town, castle, or main point of interest, there will usually be a battle here that you have to complete, with in-between spots on the map serving as where you can go to grind for additional battles, sometimes with them actually having random encounters as you walk past them on the map.

A Grid-Based Battle

Final Fantasy Tactics’ battle system is unlike anything else in the series outside of the other Tactics entries, which is actually a good thing. To start, you must select a group of characters from your overall party to use in battle by placing them on the grid, with the number allowed varying depending on whether there are guest characters filling up spots. As a rule, you’ll be able to place five of them though. You not only get to pick who you use, but also where within the small starting area of the map. This is where you want to already be strategizing on which jobs to place in front and which to place in the back. From there, it’s time to battle.

As seen in the new The Ivalice Chronicles version, a bar on the left side of the screen is always visible, listing all the characters in the battle on both sides and indicating the order in which they will take their next move. This is also signified by the number above their head at all times that will change as each one goes and they move down the list. When it is one of your characters’ turns, you can choose to do a few things. Typically, each turn consists of a movement phase and an action phase. If you are out of range and do not have any attacks or abilities that can be used, you may just have to use the wait command instead. As far as moving, your character’s movement range depends on their job, level, and abilities, which could also affect the range.

Once you select the move option, you can see how far they can move by selecting one of the open blue squares. This honestly did get quite annoying at times, as the icon did not always move in the way you wanted it to. Now, the movement of the cursor can be in eight directions, including diagonally, instead of just in four directions like in the past. You often also have to move the map itself around to see behind obstacles, so this can take some getting used to over time. You can go ahead and set your move and take it back if you didn’t end up being in range of attack or something too.

The other phase, which occurs each turn, involves performing an action that can be done before or after the move phase. The typical action here is to directly attack the enemy by moving close to them and choosing to engage in combat. However, each job has an array of different abilities that you can use, such as Black Mage’s Black Magick attacks, the Thief’s steal abilities, or something as simple as the Squire’s throw rock attack. This is where the game’s job system really comes into play.

Final Fantasy Tactics features 20 different job classes to choose from, with starting options like Squire and Chemist before getting to move on to stronger classes like Monk, Time Mage, and Samurai. The way the game works is that characters are assigned a class to start with, but can switch to any of the other base-level ones if they want. From there, they need to level up existing classes to then be able to unlock higher-level ones. For instance, to unlock either Black Mage or White Mage, you had to start as a Chemist and raise it’s level to 2, where you could then swap to the new class. If you move to the Black Mage job, you can then level it up to access the Time Mage class and so on. In addition, characters earn JP, or Job Points, for the various classes even if they aren’t that class at the time. With the earned JP in each class, you can then go and unlock abilities related to that class to use if you are using that job or also in another interesting way.

Each character not only has a main job that they have selected, but they also have an abilities menu that you can customize. Beyond the main class, you have four other slots to fill, made up of Action Abilities, Reaction Abilities, Support Abilities, and Movement Abilities. The Action Abilities are probably the most important here, as you can equip things like Items or even Black or White Magick on a Squire to use in battle, allowing you to cover more bases on the battlefield with the limited number of characters that you have at one time. Reaction Abilities are related to what happens in battle, such as having Counter Tackle to respond when attacked with a counterattack sometimes. Support Abilities include boosts to the amount of JP earned with JP Boost or the ability to equip axes, so they can be helpful too. Movement Abilities can also be a big help, as you can make your units more mobile in battle with specific movement upgrades.

When it comes to the towns, you can visit the Outfitter to buy and sell various goods. Upgrading your weapons and armor is always a good idea here, as well as picking up some useful items that you may need. The Tavern is also available here, where you can read rumors to learn much more lore about the backstory of the game than you would be told otherwise. Errands will also become available here in the Tavern starting in Chapter 2, which allow you to send characters off to complete errands to bring back JP and gil. This is extremely helpful to level up jobs that may be harder to continually earn JP for in battle, such as White Mage.

You also have the Warriors’ Guild available to you, where you can recruit new allies to use in battle. The location of the Warriors’ Guild will differ depending on the available warriors that you can recruit, which will cost you some gil to acquire. You can also rename existing team members from here.

Easily one of the most controversial aspects of Final Fantasy Tactics since day one has been the permadeath feature. Many games like Fire Emblem often allow you to turn off permadeath so that you don’t have to worry about losing important team members in a battle forever, but Final Fantasy Tactics and now Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles do not include a way to turn it off. Whenever a character dies in battle, they will have three hearts appear above their dead body and you will have that many turns to save them or they will turn into a crystal and be gone forever. This adds a lot more urgency and intensity to battles, knowing that you cannot use any of your party members as a sacrificial lamb at any point or try to pull out a last-second victory while most of your party is dead. On the plus side, this new version of the game does make this process a little easier, which is only the start of the quality-of-life inclusions added.

Quality of Life Improvements

One of the most important new quality of life features is the easy method of running from a battle at any time, with the option to just respawn on the world map as if you hadn’t started the battle yet or just restart the battle with a redone character lineup or even the same one with a fresh start. This means you can immediately exit a battle when someone dies, or perhaps you saw that your strategy wasn’t working and would rather start from scratch to try again, instead of wasting the time to keep going through it.

Perhaps even more helpful is the game’s new speed-up feature, which has become a signature staple of modern releases of classic Final Fantasy games. By holding down R1, the battles and conversations will speed up, making the long enemy turns much more tolerable than in the past. I do wish there was a way to just have the game run at a faster speed like other re-releases of Final Fantasy games, but this at least makes things so much faster and enjoyable over the many, many hours of the game, especially when you’re dying to find out what is going to happen next in the compelling story.

Another fantastic addition is that of full voice acting throughout the game. Often, games Final Fantasy Tactics get minimal voice acting due to the large amount of dialogue, but Square Enix went the extra mile in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles by adding voiced lines to nearly everything. This added a lot to the already emotional story, especially with some key moments handled very well. Also, how can you have a game now without Ben Starr voicing someone in it?

When it comes to cutscenes in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, the development team decided to eschew the now dated cutscene style from the original game and has instead replaced it with animated cutscenes that have an almost watercolor painting style to them. These scenes are beautifully animated and are visible from the beginning of the game, starting with the opening sequence. I thought this was a very unique way to modernize the cutscenes here, without making them feel too out of place alongside the now-updated sprite graphics.

The visuals in this new version of the game aren’t too far removed from the original, but have now received a resolution and quality boost to make the character sprites and backgrounds look better. This is something that may be controversial to some, but I actually thought looked quite good in action. There are some that wanted a 2.5D look akin to Octopath Traveler and the recent Dragon Quest III remake. However, I believe the route they chose to go looks great while playing and was a wise decision.

While saying that, I actually still quite enjoy the original visuals found in the Classic version too. They are just as you remember them on the PS1 version, with the animated sprites on the 3D plane. The sprites may not be as perfect looking at the new version either, but they once again really capture that era of games where the sprites had evolved past what we had in Final Fantasy VI, yet weren’t trying to go for the blocky style found in Final Fantasy VII. This was a nice in-between that I think still holds up very well and is why The Ivalice Chronicles version in the game really didn’t change the design all that much except to make it look smoother and more polished alongside the upgraded backgrounds.

The game’s UI has been significantly improved compared to the original in several ways, as it is now much more intuitive. Unlike in the original, each of the menu options is laid out so that it tells you what they do at any given time, rather than having to wait and find out in the pause menu later. An example of this is with basic abilities like Salve or Tailwind, which you likely would not know what they do at all until you use them otherwise. This version immediately tells you what these abilities do when you hover over them though, making things so much more accessible. In comparison, the UI in the Classic version still looks good, but is definitely lacking. When you hover over an ability like Salve, it doesn’t tell you anything and you just have to guess until you look more closely outside of battle. You should always know what you have at your disposal in battle before entering, but it’s still great to have the ability to see what is going on within battle beforehand too.

The Classic version maintains everything from the original release, except for the updated English translation from War of the Lions as mentioned prior, which can be seen as a good or bad thing for some. The visuals are definitely of that PS1 era where they were attempting to create cutscenes with the capabilities that they had. I actually have a soft spot for these from other games like Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX, which felt very similar here in the opening cutscene. As aforementioned, The Ivalice Chronicles version of the game instead decided to go away from the realistic cutscene look in the opening and instead went with the watercolor painting-like animated opening. They both have their perks, but I cannot say that I almost don’t love the original version better just for nostalgia sake in the opening.

If you choose to play the Classic style version, there is still a major quality of life addition in the form of auto-save. Classic version adds an auto-save feature that was not in the original at all, so this at least helps you in the case of not saving before a big fight where you lose key party members or something. A major downside, though, is that the speed-up feature found in The Ivalice Chronicles version has not been added to the Classic version. This means you will be sitting around much longer between battles instead of being able to fast forward through the slow moments.

While the new additions and all of the content included is plenty, it is disappointing that the developers chose to leave out the extra content added in the War of the Lions version outside of the English translation. That version added new characters, jobs, and even cutscenes that will not be in this version at all. I can understand leaving out the multiplayer content from the game, but the other content would have been a nice little addition for completionists that may not feel this is not the end all be all version as a result. There is also no new content just for this version like you often see in some remakes too, so that was a little bit of a letdown.

Verdict

Final Fantasy Tactics was already a stellar game with one of the best and most riveting stories in the entire franchise, even underrated a bit perhaps due to the genre for mainstream audiences at the time of original release, and now players are getting a chance to play it again with some major quality of life changes to make the experience better. For traditionalists, you can still play the Classic version of the game that you grew up with, minus the dialogue changes from the PSP release, while others can play the new The Ivalice Chronicles version. Featuring a much-improved UI, the ability to speed up battles, full voice acting, and more, you really can’t go wrong with this release. Even with the missing War of the Lions content and no new actual content added, it’s hard to argue against Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles now being the definitive edition of Final Fantasy Tactics with all of the upgrades included that have improved the overall game experience, while also still having the original to always go back to as well.

Score: 9/10

Pros:

  • Still one of the best stories in the series
  • Well designed job system
  • Addition of full voice acting
  • Quality of life additions
  • Includes new version and the Classic version

Cons:

  • Missing War of Lions extra content
  • No new content added
  • Permadeath may still turn some people off

Hunt Showdown 1896 Update 1.000.032 Out for Patch 2.5 Brings ‘Web of the Empress’ Content

Crytek has released a new update for Hunt Showdown 1896 today, and this brings the new ‘Web of the Empress’ content into the game. This is officially patch 2.5, but console players will see the update as version 1.000.032.

The Web of the Empress content promises to bring in new monsters, 12 tarot cards, and a whole lot more. See the highlights of the patch notes down below.

Hunt Showdown 1896 Patch 2.5 Brings in ‘Web of the Empress’

Web of the Empress

Bileweavers

The Corruption has birthed new monsters: The Bileweavers, spider-like beings who hatch from eggs with venom ready in their fangs. While an individual Bileweaver is weak, they like to swarm together to overwhelm intruders. They’re bent on defending their territory—not just their own massive nests, but also the small web-covered areas throughout the Incursion zones.

  • The Bileweaver is a new spider-like monster.
  • Individually, the Bileweaver is very weak, but they attack in groups, acting like a swarm.
  • Bileweavers are area defenders and can be found in the Bileweaver Nest and in small groups in other little web-covered locations.

Bileweaver Nest

  • The Bileweavers have created massive, web-covered nests. Hunters brave enough to enter and skilled enough to leave alive will find treasure hidden within.
  • Bileweaver nests contain:
    • Exclusive Scarce Weapons
    • 3 Tarot Cards
    • Destiny’s Dial: A machine that gives randomized rewards (Traits, buffs, and more)
    • Scarce and Burn Traits
    • Restoration Kit
    • Ammo Resupply Box
    • 4-Shot Boon, XP and Dark Sight Boost envelopes
    • A lootable hunter’s corpse.

Tarot Cards

  • Get ready to experience the tools of The Witch, the journey of The Fool, and the power of The Empress. This update, we’ve introduced 12 Tarot Cards: single-use Consumables, each with a unique ability based on their traditional meaning. Use a card to gain its power…and sometimes, pay its price. It may be enough to tip the scales of fate.
  • The unique effect of each card is below:
    • The World: Reveals all Boss Targets.
    • The Moon: Grants 2 seconds of Dark Sight Boost
    • The Garden: Fully heals and removes Bleeding, Burning, and Poison for you and your teammates.
    • The Fool: Copies the last Tarot Card you used this Mission.
    • The Tower: Kills Monsters and damages Targets within a 65m radius. Your Hunter catches on fire.
    • The Magician: Places a Dark Sight Decoy at your location causes Heavy Bleeding on use.Dev Note: The Dark Sight Decoy looks like an enemy Hunter to other players observing it with Dark Sight Boost. The Decoy also triggers Instinct on enemy Hunters. The Decoy has a distinct audio effect and can be dispelled by interacting with it physically. Decoys dropped by you or your own team do not show up in Dark Sight Boost or trigger Instinct for you or your team.
    • The Devil: Reduces the sway and spread (excluding shotguns) for weapons until your Hunter is downed, then destroys an additional Health Chunk.
    • The Sun: Grants an increased Regeneration buff for 60 seconds.
    • Judgement: Doubles time of all current buffs. Reduces your Hunter’s HP to 1.
    • The Hanged Man: Allows you to spectate the nearest enemy Hunter for a limited time. The spectated Hunter hears a warning afterwards.
    • The Empress: Grants the Catalyst Trait, the Necromancer Trait, and one random Burn or Scarce Trait.Dev Note: Traits are added in the order mentioned above and cannot exceed the Hunter’s maximum number of Traits. The Catalyst Trait can only be obtained via the Tarot Card “The Empress” or as a random reward from Destiny’s Dial.
    • The Chariot: Swaps Locked and Unlocked Extraction Points for all teams (only in Bounty Hunt). Destroys 1 Health Chunk. This ability has a five-minute global cooldown and can’t be used during the last five minutes of the Mission.

  • Dev Note: Since there are quite a few new effects and abilities to learn, we have added a small quality of life feature for the Tarot Cards, where if you inspect them when equipped, a small hint pop-up will appear on the top right of the screen detailing the equipped Tarot Card’s effect. This feature can also be turned off via a setting in the menu.
  • Tarot Cards can be acquired by:
    • Finding them in the world: 3 Tarot Cards are available in each Bileweaver Nest, and some have a chance to spawn at web-covered locations around the map.
    • Collecting Dark Tribute rewards: 2 Tarot Cards are earned at the first Dark Tribute stage, with 1 Tarot Card earned at each subsequent stage.
    • Looting them from dead Hunters: Any Tarot Cards carried by dead Hunters can be stolen when looting, so long as you have a free Consumable slot for them.

Locked Extraction Points & Central Extraction Points

  • With Web of the Empress, we’re introducing an additional Extraction Point to the center of the map. This Extract Point is always locked by default, and must be unlocked with the Tarot Card “The Chariot” to become accessible. These Extracts can be convenient and allow for speedy getaways, but are in exposed locations. One other random Extraction Point is locked at game start.
  • The Tarot Card “The Chariot” swaps which Extraction Points are locked and unlocked. When used by a player, there will be a global cooldown on the card for five minutes. Players can still consume the card to make space in their inventory, but no extracts can be swapped while this cooldown is active. Players will receive a small status effect icon with a timer to denote the cooldown.

Elden Ring Nightreign Update 1.13 Brings Version 1.02.3 Balance Changes

  • Further increased the frequency of lap-type courses appearing in the selection when choosing the next course in “VS Race” and wireless races.

Fixed Issues

  • Fixed an issue in “Online Play” and “Wireless Play” where the ranking would sometimes become incorrect if a player went off course at the same time as reaching the finish line.
  • Fixed an issue in “Grand Prix”, “Knockout Tour”, and “VS Race”, where the CPU’s ranking would sometimes drop after reaching the finish line.

  • Fixed an issue in “Knockout Tour” “Spiny Rally” where sometimes there was an item box buried in the ground.
  • Several other issues have been addressed to improve the gameplay experience.

We typically receive one patch per month for Mario Kart World, which means we can expect another update in October, although it won’t be as significant as this one. If Nintendo does release one, expect it here on the site.

For those looking for more vehicular combat, we recently got an early hands-on time with Screamer, a game that combines racing with fighting.
