New Destiny Dev Diary is All About Weapons, Armor, and Loot

Bungie community manager David “DeeJ” Dague describes the many rewards you and your Guardian will reap during your adventures in the studio’s shared-world shooter, Destiny.

Dague says, “The more you defeat your enemies and complete your missions, you’re going to earn rewards that will let you upgrade your Guardian in every conceivable way.”

Earlier, investment lead Tyson Green explained that loot becomes an important aspect in Destiny’s end game adventures, likening it to Blizzard’s Diablo games. He said that it’s all about “moving onto the more horizontal growth – trying new abilities and builds and weapons, with the same element of growing more powerful as a character so I can do the harder activities that exist in the world.”

Watch the video above to get more details from Dague and design lead Lars Bakken about some of the armor and weapons in Destiny, launching this September 9.

Sledgehammer Games’ Canceled Third-Person Call of Duty Had ‘Dead Space Moments’

Sledgehammer Game’s wasn’t always destined to join the ranks of Call of Duty studios Infinity Ward and Treyarch to take a stab at their own vision of the mega-popular first-person shooter.

Instead, co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey signed up with publisher Activision, coming straight out of their work on the Dead Space series with Visceral Games, to develop a third-person spin off project. Concerned over franchise fatigue, Sledgehammer believed it to be the best course of action.

“Our perspective on this was that we were given a great opportunity to bring Call of Duty to a new genre,” Schofield told GameInformer. “We had a lot of experience and a team built to deliver quality like we did with previous games.

“We had spent six or eight months on it, and were really getting into the story,” Schofield continued. “We had some really cool mechanics. We had a big moment that I would love to get into a game someday, but it’s not something we could do in first-person.”

The project was set in the Vietnam war, according to Schofield, a subject the studio spent some time on researching. “Everyone thought that war was in Vietnam, right? It was Cambodia and Laos, too. We did a lot of research on that war, a hidden war, and there were thousands of miles of underground tunnels. We had the tunnels, and we were definitely going for some Dead Space moments. It was going to be a fresh take on war, that’s for sure.”

Over half a year into the project, with 15 minutes of playable content, the road ahead turned suddenly when Schofield and Condrey were asked to assist in the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 after the departure of Infinity Ward co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella.

“One day, a bunch of execs come up and say, ‘Hey, great job on this. How would you like to work on Modern Warfare 3?'” Scofield said. “For the first game to come out of this studio, it’s like, “Oh my god…'”

The offer wasn’t an easy one to take up, however. Scrapping months of hard work proved a tough choice for the studio.

“From day one, we started Sledgehammer Games to deliver our game,” Condrey explained. “Not to deliver somebody else’s game or co-develop. We had a set vision for what we wanted Sledgehammer Games to become, and neither Glen nor I were going to make that decision on our own. We wanted it to be an all-in studio decision. The first reaction was, ‘Wow…we have our game here. We have this game. Are we willing to give up our pursuit of that to join with another studio?”

“It took a few days for the whole studio to come together and be ready to commit,” Condrey continued. “Once that happened, we were off like race horses. It was part of our culture that we were all gonna make that decision together. We would have loved to make that [third-person] game. It was in a space that we enjoyed, but how does anything compare to the first-person blockbuster release of 2011?”

Impressed with Sledgehammer’s work that eventually enabled Modern Warfare 3 to reach its targeted Fall 2011 launch, Activision then asked the studio if it felt like taking on its very own full-fledged Call of Duty title.

February of this year, Activision announced Sledgehammer Games as its third Call of Duty-dedicated studio, giving the franchise the opportunity to revolve around a three-year development cycle.

Having welcomed the idea with open arms, Sledgehammer Games released the first trailer of their new Call of Duty project, Advanced Warfare, on May 1 and are on course to launch it this November 4.

Still, one has to wonder, how would Call of Duty’s audience reacted to a third-person Call of Duty title set in the Vietnam War with ‘Dead Space moments’. Would you play it?

Is Naughty Dog Teasing Something Related to The Last of Us? [UPDATED]

Over the weekend, Naughty Dog’s very own Bruce Straley tweeted that he was demoing a prototype that sent ‘goosebumps’ through his body.

While the tweet itself isn’t very revealing, a freelancer artist who did work for The Last of Us recently posted on his personal Facebook page a mysterious piece concept art. You can view it below.

He says “Let me tease you something… Its coming… ;]”. The image appears to be a grown-up Ellie, a main protagonist of The Last of Us, playing a guitar.

Updated: Looks like the image below is fan-art as the artist commented on facebook with a statement.

“Lol. This is how you know you are teasing your stuff the right way. So before its gonna get blown out of proportions [SP] – its gonna be strictly personal image. Is it about TLOU2? Not really… Maybe… Its classified ;P But seriously its gonna be just a fan art ;]”

Report: Project Beast Leaked For The PS4, Developed By Demon/Dark Souls Creators

It appears that the minds behind both Demon Souls and Dark Souls may be gearing up for a next-gen announcement as new images for their upcoming title, “Project Beast,” have leaked.

Take this with a grain of salt. Though the images below are pretty convincing, they originated from 4Chan, according to NeoGAF. The images below are a bit blurry, so don’t take them as a graphical indication of the game.

We are going to assume the game will be titled “Beast Souls”, only because Dark Souls started out as “Project Dark”. We also assume it’s along the lines of the Souls series because the images clearly give that vibe, especially the infamous fog gates.

What do you think?

CCP Announces Project Legion, A PC Re-imagining of DUST 514. Admits DUST Wasn’t Great

CCP games, the developers behind the PS3 title DUST 514 and the highly popular PC game EVE Online, has announced during the EVE fanfest that DUST 514 would be getting a “reimagined’ version for the PC.

Project Legion, as CCP as calls the title, is the game that DUST 514 should have been according to what the developers said during the event. “How can we take the Eve Online experience and adapt it to the FPS genre? It is what Dust 514 should have been,” stated Julien Bourbonnais, game designer on Project Legion.

Do know that this isn’t just some port of DUST 514 to PC, as from the looks of the gameplay and maps, this will be a bigger sandbox title with much more details and new locations.

In terms of the relationship with EVE Online, DUST 514 never felt like it belonged in the universe with it’s rough gameplay and other shortcomings.

Squad Join Beta Comes to Battlefield 4 on Consoles

Developer DICE is rolling out a new beta program that will allow Battlefield 4 users on console to squad up before joining multiplayer match.

“Squad Join Beta” allows users to set up squads of 5 before entering into a multiplayer server, a heavily requested feature since the launch of Battlefield 4. It was originally included as a way to squad-up before matches in Battlefield 3, but was removed in its sequel because DICE did not feel it “was on par with the quality that [they] wanted to offer [their] players.”

The new feature is rolling out now on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 versions of Battlefield 4. DICE writes on the Battlelog:

Connecting and playing with your friends has always been a central aspect of the Battlefield multiplayer experience. To help make this easier, we are now releasing Squad Join Beta for Battlefield 4. This is something we know our fans have been asking for – and something we wish we could have provided at launch – so we are now happy to present the first iteration of Squad Join.

The studio adds that “Squad Join Beta is the first iteration of the feature. We will continue to add features and tweaks based on your feedback and comments, and are aiming to release the next version of Squad Join when Battlefield 4 Dragon’s Teeth arrives this summer.”

COD: Advanced Warfare is Built on a New Engine, Says Sledgehammer

According to Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is built on a new engine with efforts focused fully on the next-generation version of the game.

Audio Director Don Veca, also an ex-Visceral employee, lends his efforts to Advanced Warfare’s revamped sound design. Veca originally lent his talents to the popular horror-survival games of the Dead Space series, which had a very strong audio impact on its players. But to him, that’s in the past. What he’s working with now is on a whole different level.

“Dead Space was Dead Space,” he says. “That was a long time ago. That’s like bragging about being on the football team in high school.”

“We’ve had two and a half years to create brand-new tech to control and support this game. It’s something like 10 times the memory since this is next-gen. With all this extra memory and new mixing technology, we don’t have to compress everything. We can make things longer and let them breathe.”

GameInformer describes moments in Advanced Warfare’s single player campaign that were far more tense and atmospheric than what most Call of Duty veterans might be accustomed to.

Visually, the game is a clear improvement over 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts. While it’s still coming to older platforms this November 4, including the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Advanced Warfare will show its true strength on next-gen and PC, says Sledgehammer.

Earlier, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg commented on the positives of Call of Duty’s new three-year, three-studio development cycle, mentioning that it “gives [these studios] the freedom to fail in the creative process.” Along with a visually improved Call of Duty experience, it also leads to “new core mechanics” and “new approaches within the game,” says Hirshberg.

COD: Advanced Warfare’s EXO Suits Give Enhanced Abilities – Boost-Dodge, Slow Mo, and Zip Lines

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare takes place in the year 2054 after a catastrophic attack that Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey calls “a global 9/11.”

Players will don the role of Private Mitchell, voiced by voice-actor Troy Baker. Mitchell is a United States Marine with an intentionally generic background so that players might relate easier to his character, says the studio. While you won’t hear him speak during any sort of gameplay, Baker’s performance is fully captured in Advanced Warfare’s fully rendered CGI cutscenes that can be viewed and heard in between missions. Sledgehammer intends for story elements and objectives to be laid out clearly and coherently in the game’s single-protagonist campaign, so that players aren’t lost in convoluted, character-swapping plot points.

UPDATE 2: Sledgehammer hopes to improve Call of Duty’s pacing in Advanced Warfare by focusing on tension-filled moments of down time in between hectic action spots.

The game opens in an attack by the KVA, a well-funded network of international terrorists equipped with performance enhancing EXO suits. Mitchell fights alongside Will Irons, a soldier of the private military corporation Atlas, as they fend off the attack on US soil.

Shortly after, Mitchell is confronted by Will’s father and Atlas Corporation head, Jonathan Irons, voiced by actor Kevin Spacey, who offers him a place among the private army. Mitchell accepts and is also equipped with an advanced Atlas EXO suit.

EXO suits can be upgraded during the course of the game with new features, says Sledgehammer. Players can boost-dodge, perform super jumps, use zip lines, climb walls with magnetic gloves, cloak themselves with optic camoflauge, and even hover in mid-air.

UPDATE 1: Reading further into things, it appears that the EXO suit will also offer a short boost in speed, essentially slowing the action down, giving players more time to pick off enemies. It’s not clear if this ability is player-initiated, or pre-determined.

A “variable grenade” can be “cooked” to switch from a concussive attack to a threat-detector. As seen in the debut trailer, it highlights enemies via your visor’s augmented reality abilities.

While Sledgehammer isn’t quite talking multiplayer, Condrey says, “We’ve had two and a half years to dedicate this team to a full, next-gen experience of Call of Duty multiplayer. You can probably imagine the the possibilities of a lot of the stuff you saw in the single player and how it would apply online.”

Condrey adds that the attention to detail and the plausibility of the future depicted in Advanced Warfare was developed through in-depth research. “There’s a Navy research division out of Darmouth, and they came to us,” he says. “They said, ‘What you guys are showing through Call of Duty are the same things we want to be building.’ It was kind of nice to see the conversation flip around, from us being inspired by military research to the military being inspired by what the games are trying to deliver.”

The studio also wasn’t afraid to look to experts in the film industry as well as other resources. “We brought in experts from production design in movies to experts in the military to scientists and futurists,” says fellow Sledgehammer co-founder Glen Schofield. “People who make predictions and work for the Department of Defense and the Pentagon, and their job is to say, ‘What if another [Hurricane] Katrina happened?’ They have all these plans, and we’d ask them, ‘What if?'”

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare launches this November 4 on current-gen consoles, next-gen consoles, and PC.

COD: Advanced Warfare – Three-Year Dev Cycle Offers ‘Freedom to Fail In The Creative Process’

With the addition of Sledgehammer Games to Call of Duty’s now three-year development cycle, it offers all three studios, including Infinity Ward and Treyarch, that extra bit of breathing room to make mistakes, says Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

“Moving to a three-year cycle allows the teams a couple of things,”  Hirshberg told GameInformer.

“First of all, it gives them the freedom to fail in the creative process. It allows there to be things that don’t make it onto the disc. In a two-year process, every single line of code is like a race to the submission. We want to be able to try new things, try new core mechanics, and try new approaches within the game.”

Co-founder Michael Condrey said earlier that while Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will retain everything you know and love about the franchise, “it is a different Call of Duty.” Fellow co-founder Glen Schofield echoed his sentiments, mentioning that it will even bring “some pretty big experiments to the core mechanics that’ll effect multiplayer.”

Sledgehammer Games was announced to join Activision’s roster of Call of Duty developers last February.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC Comes to Xbox First, Microsoft Confirms

Once again, Call of Duty fans on the Xbox platform can expect first dibs on all DLC coming to this year’s Call of Duty project in development at Sledgehammer Games, Advanced Warfare.

Microsoft confirmed the news in a recent News Wire post:

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, developed by Sledgehammer Games (co-developers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3), harnesses the first three-year, all next-gen development cycle in franchise history, and again brings all add-on content first to Xbox.

The details aren’t out yet, but we presume that Xbox One and Xbox 360 members will likely get one-month early access to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC, as was the case with Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 before it.

We also anticipate an announcement regarding some sort of Advanced Warfare Season Pass that offers a full year of additional content at a discounted price.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare comes to current-gen consoles, next-gen consoles, and PC on November 4.

Advanced Warfare is a ‘Different Call of Duty,’ Will Have ‘Significant Impact on Multiplayer’

Sledgehammer Games is ready to shake things up with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the studio’s debut Call of Duty project launching this Fall.

Speaking to GameInformer, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg calls Slegehammer co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey “the perfect combination of having some history with the franchise on MW3, but also having a fresh set of eyes and new ideas about how to keep the franchise fresh.”

Advanced Warfare brings the battle to 2054, a futuristic setting where exoskeleton-wearing private military corporations are on the rise and likely causing a bit of trouble on the global military scene.

“They’ve consulted with the government, futurists, and scientists to ensure that Advanced Warfare is a realistic vision of our future rather than a lazy collection of robots and lasers,” adds Hirshberg.

Michael Condrey explains that Advanced Warfare will be a bit of a departure from the standard Call of Duty formula, while retaining what fans have come to know and love about the series. “This is Call of Duty from the spirit of every thing you loved about it, but it is a different Call of Duty,” he says.

Fellow co-founder Schofield adds that the change in core mechanics will also have significant impact on modes like multiplayer. “It brings some pretty big experiments to the core mechanics that’ll effect multiplayer and every mode of the game,” he explains.

GameInformer will have all the details in their upcoming June issue, including this pretty cover art:

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Reveal Trailer Analysis – Weapons, Tech, Locations, and Factions

On May 1, publisher Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games introduced the world to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, an ‘ambitious’ and ‘creative’ project that will introduce ‘new core gameplay mechanics’ to the long-running Call of Duty franchise.

We saw a lot in the debut trailer that aired last Thursday, including some stuff that is an obvious departure from the more traditional Call of Duty experience we’ve come to know and love. So, why don’t we take a moment to dig deep and try to figure out exactly what the heck is so ‘creative’ about this Call of Duty.

We’ve grabbed a number of interesting stills from the trailer that caught our eye and offer some level of insight into Sledgehammer’s new project. There might be a few things you missed, so let’s get to it. We have a lot to go through.

Weapons

Considering Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s futuristic 2054 setting, many of the weapons are nearly unidentifiable. However, there are a few exceptions that you’ll likely find recognizable.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 6.54.41 PM

Here, we see a fairly standard-looking handgun in the image above, holstered on the soldier’s right side. It’s hard to make out the exact make and model, however.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 7.02.20 PM

There were no clear frames from the sequence above, but from what we can make out in this one, the navy green weapon in the hand of the soldier on the left looks strikingly similar to the Beretta ARX-160 modular assault rifle, a weapon featured in last year’s Call of Duty: Ghosts. Follow the link and you’ll likely see the similarities.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 10.14.51 PM

This next one is unmistakable. The soldier in the image above is clearly holding an AK-12 assault rifle, also featured in Call of Duty: Ghosts. Again, follow the link to learn more.

Below, we’ll find some of the more unrecognizable and more advanced weapons, including the assault rifle featured on the box art of the game and the dual-optic weapon seen in a number of shots in the trailer. According to a recent press release, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will feature an “all-new class of directed-energy weaponry that enables totally new gameplay dynamics,” in addition to standard ammunition.

Here, we can make out a few different weapon arrangements and weapon attachment variants, including a pretty fancy looking optic sight and a more traditional looking holographic site.

Technology

The tech of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is clearly what is going to set it apart from previous titles in the franchise. Activision says that “Powerful exoskeletons evolve every aspect of a soldier’s battle readiness, enabling combatants to deploy with an advanced lethality and eliminating the need for specialization.”

The exoskeletons, showcased in nearly all scenes of the trailer, will offer “enhanced player movement and verticality through boost jumps and grappling, covert cloaking abilities, and biomechanics that provide unparalleled strength, awareness, endurance, and speed.”

High-tech grappling gloves allow soldiers to scale vertical walls without the use of additional equipment.

A personal cloaking device.

Now let’s look at some of the other gadgets and abilities.

Screen Shot 2014-05-04 at 12.34.57 AM

The image above shows a clearer shot of the holographic display over the soldier’s left forearm called the “Exo LINK”. It’s likely that it will play a large role in communications, intel, and controlling other military technology.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 7.09.27 PM

In this shot, we spotted an interesting weapon attachment; an integrated tactical light built into a suppressor.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 6.58.59 PM

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will also feature cloaking technology for vehicular use.

Below, we see the near Halo-like helmets that feature advanced optics and visors that are likely made out of bullet-proof materials. They will undoubtedly offer players a unique and informative in-game heads-up-display.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 7.08.33 PM

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 7.01.05 PM

This interesting little reconnaissance gadget can be thrown much like a grenade that scans and highlights enemies in the area through walls and objects.

Screen Shot 2014-05-03 at 7.12.51 PM

Here’s our first shot looking through the new weapon optic system. In the trailer, we also noticed a bit more optic sway than previous Call of Duty titles.

Here is where some of the bigger and badder hardware comes out; mechs, portable kevlar shields, drones, hover bikes, spider tanks, and rail guns. We’ll likely have to wait until E3 to learn more about how much of a role these gadgets and vehicles will play in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s multiplayer.

Locations

Three key locations that we can make out from the trailer are Seattle – Washington, Lagos – Nigeria, and San Francisco – California, as well as other locations in the Unites States and Greece.

Factions

There appears to be at least two opposing factions in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Interestingly, our main protagonists are seen assisting both sides at various points in the trailer.

“Set in the year 2054, a private military corporation (PMC) has emerged with the power to rescue humanity from a devastated world struggling to rebuild after a global attack on its military and infrastructure”, reads the press release.

This soldier’s armor appears unique to any of the other ones shown in the trailer. Perhaps it serves a more stealthy function.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Trailer Suggests Near-900p Resolution on Xbox One

Sledgehammer Games’ 2014 Call of Duty title, Advanced Warfare, certainly boasts improved visuals over previous iterations, judging by the debut trailer showcasing gameplay on the Xbox One.

But according to DigitalFoundry‘s most recent findings, Advanced Warfare may also boast an ‘advanced’ resolution on Microsoft’s next-gen console.

Their tests, conducted on this high-quality version of the trailer, indicate that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare runs in the area of a 1568×882 resolution. That is, at least, what was presented and may or may not be indicative of the final product.

“The game gives the impression of a 900p title with post-process anti-aliasing, but the framebuffer appears to be slightly lower than that, representing a 50 per cent boost in overall resolution compared to Ghosts, but only 67 per cent of the pixel density of a full 1080p presentation,” DigitalFoundry writes.

It was announced in Activision’s recent press release that developer Sledgehammer Games is focusing Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare production solely on next-gen consoles and PC, meaning a boost in visual fidelity and resolution is much more likely with their upcoming launch. What was shown thus far in the trailer indicates a clear improvement over last year’s Call of Duty: Ghosts, regardless.

As with all Call of Duty launches, a solid 60 FPS frame rate will undoubtedly be a top priority for the team. But we’ll have to wait until closer to launch for confirmation of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s final resolution on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Neversoft to Join Infinity Ward to Form Single “Super-Studio”

Call of Duty studios Infinity Ward and Neversoft are on course to merge into one single ‘Super-Studio’, according to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

Raven Software’s assistance in the development of 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts appears to have led to the decision.

“As you know, Neversoft and Infinity Ward teamed up for the development of Call of Duty: Ghosts,” Hirshberg wrote. “And through that process, it became clear that the two studios have very complementary skill sets. Between these two excellent studios, it seemed like a single ‘super-studio’ could emerge.”

That studio will retain the name Infinity Ward, however, while Neversoft will be retired.

“The impact of their 20-year run of hard work and success cannot be overstated,” Hirshberg added. “As already mentioned, we are merging these two very talented teams and obviously had to choose a name for the combined studio. Since the Infinity Ward brand is indelibly tied to the Call of Duty franchise, it is the sensible choice. While it will be strange to not see the Neversoft logo on future games, the important things–which are the Neversoft team’s talent, creativity, professionalism and commitment to creative excellence–all remain unchanged as part of this new chapter.”

In addition to the new shift in resources, Neversoft studio head Joel Jewitt and studio director Scott Pease have announced their retirement, though they will both see the transition through before leaving. The new studio will be lead by  the current executive VP of worldwide studios for Activision, Dave Stohl.

Infinity Ward currently continues development on downloadable content for Call of Duty: Ghosts while Sledgehammer Games is responsible for this year’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, joining the three-studio, three-year development cycle along with Treyarch.

Titanfall Expedition DLC – “Runoff” Details and Screens

Titanfall’s first DLC, “Expedition” arrives this May, offering three brand new multiplayer maps for Pilot and Titans to explore; War Games, Runoff, and Swamplands.

We got our first look at War Games a last week, a map inspired by Titanfall’s training module. Today, Developer Respawn Entertainment offers a look at Runoff.

Designer, Geoff Smith describes it as a “pretty fun level that plays very differently in each game mode.”

“Runoff was an experiment to try and make a small map but still allow Titans enough pathing options so that they don’t feel constrained or limited,” he explained.

“The core concept of the level is multiple layers of paths: concrete canals filled with water and trash below, and upper levels that are cleaner and more industrial. I thought the canals would be cool for Titans to fight in, with Pilots able to jump across them. I also set out to make more choke points in the level, something that is pretty hard to do in our game, at least for Pilots with their enhanced mobility.”

Check out the new screens below and be sure to read more about it here.
