The Division a ‘Cover Based Combat Game’ Affected By Weather and Destruction

In The Division, both weather and destruction elements will play a role in the game’s third-person combative engagements.

Clear mid-day skies or stormy dark weather, time of day and forecast will affect how AI-controlled enemies perceive you.

Director Ryan Barnard explains the scenario: “Say it’s early morning and it’s clear. You’re in an area with enemies – I don’t
want to go into calling them NPCs but enemies – and you have to be really careful as you’re moving through the streets if you don’t want to alert them to your presence because they can detect you and hear you much further away.

“But during a snowstorm, for example, a big weather system has come up and you can move through the area [freely] and get much closer [undetected]. It changes the tactics and the movement speed you have, and you have to learn how to deal with the environment.”

Though you won’t see any Battlefield-level destruction events, cover and other objects do react to small arms fire, just as they would in real life.

“You won’t be able to destroy everything in the game: that would be great but it’s not really feasible production-wise,” explains Barnard. “It makes people cry.”

“We’re a Clancy RPG, so tactical combat is important and at our core we’re a cover based combat game. So covers will all be destructible either from a small bit to being completely destroyed.”

Recently, brand art director Rodrigo Cortes explained how Massive Entertainment aims to achieve “full immersion” with The Division, powered by the impressive Snowdrop Engine.

Thanks, CGV.

Destiny – Your Guardian’s Inventory is a ‘Free-For-All of Firepower and Mayhem’

Today, Bungie is sharing a few more details that shine light on Destiny‘s inventory system.

In the latest Bungie Weekly Update, community manager DeeJ answered questions relating to player gear – how many weapons combinations a player can carry in the shared-world shooter and what sort of gear is accessible throughout the world’s different game modes.

DeeJ confirmed that players will be able to mix and match weapons, calling it a “free-for-all of firepower and mayhem”.

“Your roguish Hunter can enjoy a Sniper Rifle in his hands and a hand-cannon in his holster. My regal Warlock can butt a belt-fed heavy machine gun against his shoulder, with a Pulse Rifle at the ready. Urk’s burly Titan can draw a Scout Rifle against his foe, holding a Shotgun in reserve”

By the sounds of it, players will have significant freedom when it comes to weapon combinations in primary and secondary slots.

DeeJ also confirmed that a Guardian’s inventory will be carried into all game modes – co-operative and competitive gameplay – while allowing for flexibility in loadouts.

“The plan of record is to enable you to carry an inventory with you, and allow you to make changes on the fly,” he said. “The mysterious science that fills your pack with such wonderful toys is our secret for now. It’s technology, indecipherable from magic.”

Excited to build up your arsenal in Destiny? You’ll be able to get started on September 9 when it launches on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Titanfall on Xbox 360 Will Be The “True Experience”, Says Bluepoint Games

This Tuesday, April 8, developer Bluepoint Games will be launching the Xbox 360 version of Respawn Entertainment’s shooter, Titanfall.

Discussing the difficulties of bringing an experience like Titanfall on the Xbox One and PC to older hardware, Bluepoint Games senior producer Daryl Allison says that despite its limitations, “Titanfall on the Xbox 360 is the true experience.”

He adds that “all the maps, modes, pilots, titans, weapons, burn cards, you name it, found in the Xbox One and PC versions” will also be fully realized in the previous-generation version. “The game looks great, sounds great, and above all it plays great.”

Weaker hardware does lead to a few compromises, however. “There are of course some differences that are due to the technical limitations of the hardware,” Allison explains. “For example, the game runs above 30fps – but the experts at Respawn worked with us to ensure that all the intense, 6v6 wall-running, titan-dropping action is there.”

Are you picking up Titanfall for the Xbox 360 this Tuesday?
