Bungie on Creating Fully Customizable Characters in Destiny

From GDC 2014, Bungie technical Art Lead Scott Shepherd talks about building fully customizable characters in the studio’s upcoming shared-world shooter, Destiny.

In the presentation, Shepherd explains Bungie’s goal to create powerful and flexible character building tools that allows the studio to offer players a vast selection of customization options over the span of Destiny’s near decade-long life lifespan.

It’s a bit long and technical, but it really goes to show the amount of work that goes into things we might otherwise take for granted – things like being able to equip our avatars with a simple helmet. Also, if you’re really into decking out your in-game characters with fully-customizable swag, you’ll definitely enjoy giving it a watch.

You can check out the presentation in the GDC archives through this link.

Update

You can catch all the slides shown in the presentation below, courtesy of Bungie:

Destiny launches on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 September 9.

Splitscreen Multiplayer is Coming to Goat Simulator

Soon, you’ll be able to do stuff as a goat with your friends.

Swedish-based developer Coffee Stain Studios has announced that it will be adding splitscreen multiplier to it’s quirky, third person sim title, Goat Simulator, in an upcoming game update due out this May.

Update 1.1 will also offer a new map that’s “roughly the size of the original vanilla map,” along with new playable goats, achievements, and more.

“A lot of people have been asking for DLC with new maps for Goat Simulator, but we would feel bad charging people for DLC content when people can just download new stuff for free from the Steam Workshop, so we decided to do a free update instead,” said Coffee Stain’s Armin Ibrisagic.

Excited to cross off “play as a goat in a goat simulator video game with a friend” on your to-do check list?

Thanks, Eurogamer.

“Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!” – More Evidence Suggests It’s a Real Thing

Today, Borderlands fans awoke to the pleasant news of an unannounced Borderlands title from 2K Australia that reports are claiming will be called “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!”

It’s said to include some long-requested features, like a Hyperion Moon Base setting and Cryo Weapons.

Through a closer look at the Twitter account of Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox and the studio responsible for creating the critically acclaimed franchise, we’re learning that he actually may have been dropping hints of the new shooter right under our noses all along.

Addressing a fan about rumors of the playable Athena character, Pitchford said that he expects “Athena to make a new Borderlands appearance very soon.”

Furthermore, remember that article floating around the internet last week, where Pitchford was misinterpreted saying Borderlands 3 is set to be announced? Well, it appears that the story is not false, as he notes that the story was made ahead of the ‘real story’.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until PAX East for any solid confirmation of “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!” as 2K has declined to comment if this is actually a thing. However, it should be noted that the domain name of “BorderlandsThePreSequel” was registered a few days ago.

If the rumor holds true and this Borderlands title is a real thing, then you can expect to see it available on the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

You can now pick up Infinity Ward’s latest shooter for a really cool price of $20, according to recent price cuts on Microsoft’s official store.

Visiting the Call of Duty: Ghosts’ page on Microsoft Store, you’ll find $40 knocked off the Xbox One version and $30 knocked off the Xbox 360 version, dropping both titles to only $20. Reports are coming in that retailer Target has also knocked Call of Duty: Ghosts’ price down to $20 on clearance as well, though it doesn’t appear that the sale has reflected on the company’s online page just yet.

UPDATE: Reddit user tec2030 posted this image from a local Target location, confirming the $20 Call of Duty: Ghosts clearance sale at the retailer.

This follows a recent sale over at GameStop that knocked $20 off all versions of the game for the duration of last weekend.

Infinity Ward recently launched the game’s second round of DLC on Xbox Live called Devastation, including four new maps, a new Extinction map, and a new weapon for use in multiplayer. Earlier, a $60 version of Ghosts called the “Gold Edition” was spotted that includes the Onslaught add-on, as well as the Wolf Killstreak skin for your Guard Dog

Full patch notes below:

Fixes

  • Ongoing fixes and adjustments to the user interface.
  • Additional fixes to address audio crackling sound encountered when Dolby Digital is enabled.
  • Fixes for Blu-ray software issues that can result in 0x21 or 0x87de07d1 errors.
  • Update to address an issue where ejecting a Blu-ray disc after the drive is idle can result in the disc being pulled back in, requiring a second eject
  • command.
  • Fix to address Kinect not responding to “yes” or “no” after issuing the “Xbox, turn off” command.
  • Updates to reduce or eliminate Blu-ray drive “seeking” sounds after drive is idle (experienced in the 1403 update.)
  • New controller firmware update – to help address controller disconnect issues, and to help address headset adapter audio quality.
  • Fix for LiveTV audio outputting in stereo instead of surround sound.
  • Update for the Blu-ray player to fix an issue where it can freeze if left idle or paused for an extended period of time.
  • Update to fix an issue where fast forwarding or rewinding an external video source results in screen freezing when surround sound is enabled.
  • Fix for video playback stuttering while audio plays back normally in several apps (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, etc.)

Features Enabled

  • Game save progress bar will now display when syncing cloud game saves.
  • 50Hz Blu-ray player support for content recorded at 50Hz.
  • Improved GameDVR video quality.
  • Online friends notification, including the ability to filter notifications to all friends, favorites only, or disable friends online notifications altogether.
  • *NEW FEATURE* Requested by the update preview community: Manually install available updates. If a new system update is detected as available, a button will appear under Settings, System that will display “System Update.” Note: this feature is being enabled after this current update completes installation. This feature will be available to preview when the next update is made available.
  • *NEW FEATURE* A new ability to automatically redeem a license code from console messages. For future console messages that include a 5×5 license code, a new option will appear to allow you to automatically redeem the license, versus having to copy and paste the license code.

Known Issues

  • Some preview participants may encounter an issue where the Blu-ray drive will not ingest a disc after the console has been idle for a period of time. The disc will need to be removed and re-inserted for the disc to be ingested. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
  • Some preview participants may encounter an issue where some non-Blu-ray disc media types are pulled back into the Blu-ray disc drive after being ejected, requiring a second eject command. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
  • In this version of the 1404 update, the startup process of a console doing a cold boot up (systems that are configured for power saving mode, versus instant on) will encounter a delay of approximately 30 seconds, during which a solid black screen is displayed. This issue is not present for consoles powering up from a standby state. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
  • During silent update installation some devices controlled by the Xbox One via IR (TVs, receivers) may power up in the middle of the update process and not power back down. The developers are investigating this issue.

Along with the new update, Xbox One users can also download a new SmartGlass beta app that allows the for rearranging of pins and improved One Guide controls. You can find the downloads here.

Titanfall – Respawn “Turns Down” Effects on Recent Matchmaking Improvements

Titanfall players on the Xbox One and PC have been reporting troubles finding matches after Respawn’s recently implemented matchmaking improvements.

On Reddit, user AnnoyedShelf says finding matches with a party of no more than two can take up to ten minutes. Others report that matchmaking is still too inconsistent to offer proper team balance.

According to the studio, it appears that the update was doing its job a little too well, but also introduced a few new bugs along the way. Therefore, things are being scaled back while the team looks into new solutions.

“FYI: we turned down the effect of the new matchmaking to help players find games while we work on fixing bugs and making improvements,” Respawn recently wrote on Twitter.

Looks like more tweaks are in order while we still await details on upcoming patches. Keep your sights on MP1st for updates.

Rumor – 2K Australia Working On Borderlands Prequel Set On Hyperion’s Moon Base, Set To Release On Last-Gen Platforms

More Borderlands is always a good thing for those of us who are highly addicted to Gearbox’s critically acclaimed shoot and loot franchise. If recent rumors are true, Borderlands fans should be expecting a new title to be announced soon.

This rumor comes from Gamepointsnow, who reports that despite Gearbox’s CEO Randy Pitchford stating that a new Borderlands title isn’t in the works, it appears that the 2K Australia studio has been tacked on with the duty of developing the next Borderlands title.

Apparently, this upcoming entry to the Borderlands franchise will be a prequel to their latest release, Borderlands 2. Also, it is said to fill in that five year time gap that took place between Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2.

Gamepointsnow also adds the unannounced Borderlands title will take place on Elpis and Hyperion’s moon base. It will see players choose from four of Handsome Jack’s lieutenants that include old and new characters from the game as the usual four characters classes which are: Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer and Fragtrap, a militarised claptrap.

Of course, since this is a Borderlands title after all, you can be sure to get your hands on some pretty nifty weapons, which the rumored Borderlands title is set to add, including Laser weapons and Cyro weapons. The latter is capable of freezing anything in your way, something that Borderlands fans have requested for some time to be added into the game.

It also appears that the team over at 2k Australia will be adding a new layer of combat to the game in Oxygen, which will be in lootable form of Ox-kit, that will see players manage their oxygen level as they blast through numerous of foes.

However, those wishing to pick this up on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One platforms will be disappointed to know that Gamepointsnow states that the game will be heading to only PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Since this is just a rumor, it’s best to take everything with a grain of salt as nothing has been made official. But, since PAX east takes place this week, it is a possible announcement is imminent.

VG247 has reached out to a 2K rep to confirm this rumor, but they’ve received the usual ‘no comment’ response.

Update: It appears the unannounced Borderlands title will be called “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!,” which gives more weight to the recent rumor.

Official Xbox 360 Emulator for Xbox One a Possiblity, Says Microsoft

Backwards compatibility might not be a base feature on the Xbox One, but Microsoft has plans to bring an Xbox 360 emulator to the newest member of the Xbox brand at some point.

During the Microsoft Build developer conference attended by Kotaku, an audience member asked lead partner development Frank Savage if “there are any plans for an Xbox 360 emulator on the Xbox One?” to which Savage replied;

There are, but we’re not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately. It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there’s nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself.”

Having an Xbox 360 emulator on the Xbox One would be another reason to upgrade to the latest generation, but the biggest question is whether or not Microsoft would allow you to pay a small overall fee to play the games you own on the Xbox One, or have you buy them again via digital download.

What are your thoughts? Is Microsoft making the right moves towards a more gamer friendly console? Let us know in the comment section below!

GameSpy Shutting Down Hosting Services End of May

GameSpy, an online matchmaking client hosting a number of online multiplayer games, will be shutting down as of May 31, owners Glu Mobile recently announced.

“Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy,” the company said in a statement. “If you have any questions about how this impacts your favorite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information. Thanks for a great ride!”

Thus far, Arma 3 developer Bohemia Interactive is the only studio to have issued a public statement, mentioning that they are planning to “introduce and alternate solution” for Arma 2: Operation Arrowood and Arma 3 players.

“This is going to affect multiplayer in our games that use Gamespy for matchmaking, cd keys authentification and NAT traversal from Arma: Resistance to Arma 3. We are planning to introduce an alternative solution using Steam to Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead and Arma 3 users.

“Other games (Take On Helicopters, Arma 2, Arma 2: Free, Arma, Arma: Cold War Assault) will have more limited multiplayer experience with loss of server browser, cd key authentification and NAT traversal systems. That said, direct IP connection to servers should work even after Gamespy services are no longer available.”

Activision told IGN that the publisher “won’t be affected.”

Other publishers and developers will need to decide whether or not to update their games with new server technologies following the closure.

For an extensive list of games affected, you can browse through the archives (2002 – 2010) on GameSpy’s official website.

Titanfall Day One Xbox 360 Patch Allows Users To Lock Game To 30 FPS

After a pair of delays, Titanfall is coming to the Xbox 360 this Tuesday. But information on the title is still scarce, even so close to its launch date.

Earlier, we learned that Titanfall on the Xbox 360 requires a 1GB install prior to playing. Today, YouTuber Jan ChillOnXbox, with another early copy of the title, reveals that the game will indeed receive a day one patch that will give Titanfall players on the Xbox 360 a choice to lock the game at 30 FPS, as seen in the video above.

Developer Bluepoint Games wrote earlier that Titanfall on the Xbox 360 can run above 30 FPS. But it’s like that the option to lock it at 30 is there for those who prefer a more consistent experience.

Unfortunately, there is no gameplay footage of Titanfall running on previous-gen, nor are there any further details regarding the day one patch for Titanfall. Though, Respawn CEO Vince Zampella says on Twitter that “Matchmaking is also a priority”.

Keep your sights on MP1st for more Titanfall updates.

Doom Beta Is Coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

As we learned last February, Bethesda’s upcoming shooter, Wolfenstein: The New Order, would offer pre-orderers the chance to participate in the official Doom Beta at a later date.

The now updated FAQ indicates that the Beta will only be available to next-gen platforms – PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Codes will be provided in an insert inside hard copies of The New Order, and sent to those who pre-order digitally. “Other digital retailers’ processes and/or participation may vary,” said the FAQ. “We suggest contacting your preferred retailer directly for additional information.”

Currently, the only way to get access to Doom’s beta is via pre-ordering The New Order. Like you, we’re excited to learn more about the new Doom game, but details are scarce. Keep your eyes and ears open!

Wolfenstein: The New Order hits PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on May 20.

Titanfall Xbox 360 Servers Not Up Until April 8, 1 GB Mandatory Install Required

Early copies of Bluepoint Games’ Xbox 360 version of Titanfall are out in the hands of a number of consumers.

But those looking to get online early will have to abide by the game’s April 8 launch date, as Xbox 360 servers have yet to boot up, says the studio.

Images of early copies also indicate that the Xbox 360 version will require a mandatory 1 GB install, which is not uncommon for triple-A games launched late in the console’s life cycle. It’s likely that Bluepoint’s intention to provide the ‘true Titanfall experience’ on the previous generation console makes the additional install necessary.

Thanks, VG247.
