Many COD: Ghosts Improvements Incoming, Spawning, Sniper Rifle Tweaks, and New Modes

While we might not be able to expect any updates over the holidays, Call of Duty: Ghosts developers Infinity Ward aren’t leaving us in the dark when it comes to what sort of improvements are in the works for their latest shooter.

In a recent Call of Duty community blog post, the studio outlined a number of major improvements that the team plans to roll out over time. On top of tweaks to the game’s spawning system, there are some notes about weapon balancing (specifically, sniper rifles), anti-cheat efforts, and even a new type of playlist, among many other things.

Check out the full list below, as seen on the the Call of Duty community website. Be sure to tell us in the comments what improvements have you most excited. What other sort of improvements do you believe are still in order?

Incoming Call of Duty: Ghosts Improvements

Spawning: Spawning is one of the most talked about subjects in Ghosts, and it’s one of the most talked about subjects here at the studio as well. We’ve been addressing bugs with the current spawning system, but feel we can do more to make the experience better. We are currently working on significant changes to the spawning system based off of the learnings and play data that we have gathered over the last 5 weeks. Work is progressing here and we recently had our first internal playtest of this new system. The designers are working feverishly to get it ready to go live and we will keep you up-to-date on our progress.

Weapon Balance/Sniper Rifles: We constantly evaluate and re-evaluate weapon balance. Any changes we make have a ripple effect throughout the game so we test things heavily before they go live.  After much feedback and many hours of internal testing, we recently made adjustments to the MSBS.

Sniper Rifles are something we are also looking into; as we said before, we changed Sniper Rifles from MW3 to Ghosts. Those changes are:

  • No aim assist from the hip, which was a huge part of how Quick Scoping worked in previous games. Players now have to aim unassisted until fully scoped in.
  • Hip fire reticles for Sniper Rifles were removed and hip spread was increased drastically. This reduces the effectiveness of hip firing with a Sniper Rifle.
  • The Quickdraw perk’s Aim Down Sight (ADS) speed scale was reduced significantly for Sniper Rifle.

Moving forward, we are testing adjustments to address the Time to Kill for Sniper Rifles versus other weapons. These Sniper Rifle balances include:

  • A reduction in the flinch benefit of the Focus perk.
  • An increase in overall ADS time.
  • Sniper Rifles with a silencer are being changed to a chest-up kill instead of a waist-up kill.

We will continue to monitor the data and balance these weapons accordingly.

Hacking/Cheating: We have a dedicated Online Security department enforcing our online code of conduct for Call of Duty: Ghosts [click here]. This team is actively banning cheaters, cleaning up the leaderboards, and fixing hacked stats. The development team is fixing hacks and exploits as we find them. Please refer to the patch notes for a list of security fixes we’ve already addressed [click here]

And you can help! When you report someone in-game, it goes directly to our Online Security team and they investigate every issue. You can also report issues to Activision Support, either through twitter (@ATVIAssist) or online [click here]

Squad Points: We are making a change to the amount of Squad Points your soldiers earn. For ranks 1 – 5, each rank up will now give you 5 squad points (increased from the usual 2 squad points). So each Squad Member that you take to level 5, you’ll get 25 squad points.

Operations: We are looking at large, potential changes for Operations. For instance, we are looking into increasing XP rewards for completing operations. More info to come.

Infected: We are in the process of adding new loadouts to the Infected playlist. This is currently being tested internally, so be sure to look out for more variety in the future!

New game mode: We are in the process of adding a new Heavy Duty playlist that increases player health.  We would love to hear your feedback on this new mode, so make sure to try it out.

DayZ Standalone Alpha – Should You Buy It?

When it comes to the DayZ Alpha, most people that haven’t already paid for it are probably wondering if it’s worth buying.

From the developers telling you not to, to players essentially saying stay away unless you’re hardcore into the game, it seems like the answer would be to wait until development is further along.  While I agree that the alpha is oriented more towards hardcore players, I also think it’s accessible enough to not be something a casual fan of the mod shouldn’t invest in.

Is it well polished? No. Not at all.  But unlike most alphas, DayZ actually works.  It’s not very well optimized, so unless you have a pretty heavy-duty PC, you’re going to be stuck in 720p.  The gameplay in general is as barebones as it gets as a number of core and new features are nowhere near finished or implemented yet.  And overall, it wreaks of alpha content when it comes to animations, sounds, bugs, etc.  That said, there’s something about this alpha that begs to be talked about.  It’s fun.

K4rEfZF

Don’t get me wrong, the game is very alpha, but what made the mod fun wasn’t just the weapon variety or loot spawns, it was trying to navigate to your buddies when they spawned in, staying alive in a very hostile and harsh world, and of course, killing other players that didn’t want to “play along.”

DayZ SA Alpha hits all those points and more, while also introducing a new level of survival that only the more hardcore additions to the mod have.  Eating and drinking is critical to survival, disinfecting your drinking water and bandages is paramount, and staying alive is a constant balance of right place, right time, and inventory management.  Throw in your friends and some hostile players and you’ve got DayZ at its core and its finest.

So is DayZ ready to eat up some of your holiday savings?  Unless you’re into DayZ in a way that probably isn’t healthy for your social life, nope.  But, even for an Alpha, it shows a remarkable amount of polish and refinement.  In the coming months and by late next year, I think we’ll see DayZ taking over the gaming scene in ways the mod could only have dreamed of.  But until then, stay off my beach unless you want to starve to death in 20 minutes with a fire extinguisher on your back wearing nothing but your undies and a motorcycle helmet.

Ace Combat: Infinity And Soul Calibur: Lost Swords Delayed Until 2014

PlayStation 3 owners who were looking forward to the release of two upcoming free-to-play titles from Namco Bandai may have to wait a little bit longer to get their hands on it.

Recently, Namco Bandai announced that both Ace Combat: Infinity and Soul Calibur: Lost Swords will be missing their late 2013 release date and will, instead, launch in the year 2014. Namco Bandai says it’s because of the studio’s intention to provide a better quality product once they are released.

At the moment, there’s no planned re-release date for when either of these free-to-play titles are expected to be available to the public.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Will Have A “Full-Fledged, Optimized PC Version”

The much anticipated new MMO from Ubisoft, The Division, was recently petitioned to have a version of the game made for PC players, and it looks like they won’t be disappointed – at all.

In a recent Community Q&A with developer Massive, a user asked how the game “is going to look on PC?”

“As you know, Masssive has its roots in PC development,” the studio replied. “We are working hard and we want to make sure that we have a very high quality experience on PC. You can be sure that our PC version won’t be a port, but a full-fledged, optimized version! We want to create the best game possible regardless of what platform you play on.”

The_Division_Snowdrop_2

This comes as a bit of a surprise, as most games that are developed first for consoles and then ported to the PC aren’t as optimized as players would like. It’s great to hear an ambitious open-world shooter like The Division is looking to make PC gamers happy.

So PC players, how thrilled are you? Let us know in the comment section below!

New Call of Duty Online Cyborg Zombies Gameplay and Details Surface

Check out Call of Duty Online‘s brand new Cyborg Zombie mode in action.

Late last month, it was discovered that Call of Duty Online, a free-to-play, PC-only Call of Duty title marketed toward Chinese audiences, would boast a mini game similar to the already well-established Call of Duty Zombies game mode made famous by Call of Duty titles like World at War, Black Ops, and Black Ops 2. The difference? Cyborg Zombies, among other things.

Giving us a first look at actual gameplay, YouTube personality LiamFTWinter sums up a number of details in his latest video, which we’ve included in the featured section above for you to check out.

He talks about the four playable classes available as well as how the mode differs from the traditional Zombies experience. Most notably, players will focus on conquering eleven rounds before evacuating the area, rather than testing their survival skills against endless waves of cyborg zombies. Below is a breakdown of each class, including equipment each class has access to and perks they earn by surviving rounds.

Be sure to watch the video above for more details.

Cowboy

Equipment:

  • Ice Trap
  • Monkey Momb
  • Money Grenade

Survival Perks:

  • Sharpshooter Soda – 3 rounds: Reduces ADS spread and sniper rifle sway
  • Big Kill Soda – 6 rounds: Carry and extra weapons

Tank

Equipment:

  • Sticky Grenade

Perks:

  • Discount Soda – 3 rounds: Get 10% off weapons and perks

  • Carpenter Soda – 6 rounds: Rebuild barriers faster and plant C4 explosives

Trigger

  • Ray Jumps (?)

Survival Perks:

Second Investor Lawsuit Hits EA Over Poor Battlefield 4 Performance

Last week, law firm Holzer Holzer & Fistel launched an investigation into video game publishing company EA over ambitions claims made surrounding a currently under-performing Battlefield 4.

After citing a significant drop in share value, yet another firm, Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, has taken similar action, claiming that EA has violated the Securities Exchange Act.

The complaint claims EA “issued materially false and misleading statements highlighting the purported strength of the Company’s rollout of version 4 of its all-important Battlefield video game series, which had provided approximately 11% of its revenues in fiscal 2012.”

The firm insists that the following points were hidden from investors:

“(a) Battlefield 4 was riddled with bugs and multiple other problems, including downloadable content that allowed players access to more levels of the game, a myriad of connectivity issues, server limitations, lost data and repeated sudden crashes, among other things;

“(b) as a result, Electronic Arts would not achieve a successful holiday season 2013 rollout of Battlefield 4;

“(c) the performance of the Electronic Arts unit publishing Battlefield 4 was so deficient that all other projects that unit was involved in had to be put on hold to permit it to focus its efforts on fixing Battlefield 4; and

“(d) as a result, Electronic Arts was not on track to achieve the financial results it had told the market it was on track to achieve during the Class Period.”

A conclusion from either investigation has yet to be drawn.

Currently, Battlefield 4 developers DICE are focusing efforts on bug fixing. Patches for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were rolled out yesterday with a significant PC update that launched one day prior. More are expected as we speak.

With that, we want to ask you, do you think the situation has been blown out of proportion, or did EA get what was coming? What outcome do you anticipate from these investigations?

Thanks, GameInformer and OXM.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy a Gaming Headset

The bottom line, if you want to stop reading here, is don’t buy a gaming headset unless you want an all-in-one package and are willing to sacrifice audio/build quality to get it.

Because of how much time I spend using headphones and recording audio, I feel as though I’m somewhat of a novice authority on audio equipment. Yes, there are tons of people with more experience and expertise, but for the purposes of this post, I think my experience justifies its message.

If you’ll indulge me and read on, however, I think you’ll see the light if the bottom line isn’t enough.

Gaming headsets, in a nutshell, are the swiss army knife of headphones. No matter how much you spend, you’re always going to get something that offers a lot of features at the cost of functionality, quality, and above all value. While I wouldn’t go anywhere without my leatherman, it’ll never replace my tool kit. So while a headset might make sense for day-to-day gaming use, eventually, you’ll end up wanting more and have to reach for the headphone drawer.

What I mean by this is two-fold; first, no gaming headset is going to match the audio quality of a comparably priced, well-made set of headphones, ever. It just isn’t physically possible, especially for headsets with integrated sound cards like the Corsair Vengeance 2100. The reason for this is that Corsair has to spend that $100 they make selling their headset on drivers, a sound card, wireless functionality, USB connectivity, a battery system, microphone functionality, and heck knows what else if you buy something with multiple drivers in each ear piece. Obviously, when you buy a pair of headphones, all you’re really buying is the drivers, and maybe a wireless transceiver. So in terms of per-part value, headsets might offer more features, but they offer much less value per feature.

Instead of swinging your money relentlessly for gaming headsets, make a smart investment in a truly high-quality audiophile headphone. You will realize how great it is not only for gaming but also for enjoying music or sound editing

Of course, being a swiss army knife has it’s advantages. You don’t need a mic or a sound card for a headset. But anyone that has a headset gamer on their friends list will tell you their mic sounds awful and is more annoying than helpful. And when it comes to sound cards, $30 is going to get you something better than any headset has to offer in the ASUS Xonar DG. So while upfront, you might save some money and hassle in buying a headset, in the long run, if you intend to get any use out of it other than just as headphones, you’re paying for useless features and inferior headphones.

That said, console gamers are in a tough spot in that you really don’t have much in the way of options when it comes to microphone input.  That said, given that the consoles all output somewhat compressed audio, the difference in audio quality between a gaming headset and regular headphones might not be great enough to warrant sacrificing VOIP functionality.  Even so, there are most likely ways of plugging in some cheap 3.5mm or 2.5mm mic into your controller or console, so I wouldn’t totally overlook headphones as an option if you’re a console gamer.

In the end, if you’re willing to spend an extra $20 on a Snowball and $30 on a Xonar or bother downloading any number of free software surround sound drivers, I guarantee you will see a substantial gain in long-term value and quality with headphones and the aforementioned peripherals over a comparably priced or even more expensive gaming headset.  For console gamers, your options are more limited, but if your friends don’t mind you using your Kinect or the inline-mic your PS4 comes with, there’s no reason not to consider a pair of headphones over a gaming headset.

Here’s a list of recommended items, should you choose to go the headphone route and want my personal “best of” for such equipment that won’t blow your Steam sale savings:

  • ATH-M50s – Probably the best $100 headphones money can buy right now.
  • ASUS Xonar DG Sound Card – Everyone, including me has or should buy one, seriously.
  • Turtle Beach Ear Force DSS2 Dolby Surround Sound Processor – If you’re a console gamer, Turtle Beach makes a sound card that should work with the new consoles as well as the previous gen ones, and you can get it used for pretty cheap too.
  • Olympus ME-52W – Cheap Mic. Don’t ask me if it’s good, I just know it’s cheap.
  • Blue Snowball – This is the mic that all the nerds fawn over when it comes to cheap USB mics, it’s good and will work great for voip and streaming/podcasting.

Thanks for reading!  Hopefully my advice helps you make a good choice this holiday season!

In Raid, you’ll have to fight your way into your opponents’ base and steal a package, then deliver it back to your base to score points. Reach the target score, or deliver more packages than your opponents do in the allotted time to win the match.

“Beachin” – Legal highs and bad t-shirts aren’t the only things being pushed on Vespucci Beach. Four factions raid each other’s stashes for control of the area’s ‘tourist trade’. Take product back to your spot and it’s yours.

“Wargames” – Like any military operation, when things kick off at Fort Zancudo Air Base, they escalate pretty quickly. Teams stockpiling weapons to sell on the black market raid each other’s bases at either end of the facility. If they get the goods back, they’re banked. Nothing’s off limits to be used here, including the fighter jets.

HOLD

When playing Hold, teams must collect and store as many packages as possible in their base. Packages can either be found on the map, or stolen from the opposing team’s bases. Reach the target score, or hold the most packages when the time runs out, to win.

“Block Party” – Gang violence escalates in Chamberlain Hills, as block fights block at close quarters. Four factions with two packages each try to raid each other and protect their own stuff. If they get someone else’s product back to their turf, they’ll have to protect it.

GTA

As the ubiquitous acronym might suggest, GTA mode tasks players with stealing target vehicles located all around the map, before bringing them back to their respective bases. Each team must fight to steal more vehicles in the allotted time than their opponents.

“My Maibatsu” – Four East Los car thief outfits compete to get hold of a shipment of Sanchez dirt bikes, and store them back at their bases, while preventing the other teams from doing the same. First place to look would be the Maibatsu Factory.

“Field of Screams” – A tractor shortage in Grapeseed leads to farmyard chaos. It’s harvest time, and two rival gangs compete to bring a Fieldmaster tractor back to their bases. Farming is a deadly serious business in Blaine County.

CONTEND

In Contend, there’s only one package, situated in the middle of the map. Teams must fight to bring this package back to their respective bases, and once the package is captured it respawns in the middle of the map and is up for grabs again.

“Salty Snatch” – Dog walkers and surfing talent agents look out – two import operations at either end of Chumash Beach are fighting over a shipment that’s landed on the pier. Any product they can get to their spot in the sand is theirs to keep.
