The Division – Ubisoft Massive Discuss Survival, Equipment, Exploration and More RPG Elements

New details about The Division emerge as we learn about elements of survival, equipment, trading, exploration and more.

In a recently discovered interview, Ubisoft Massive lead game designer Mathias Karlson and design director Axel Rydby discuss elements that put the “RPG” in The Division.

Food and water, given the current state of the game world, will have much greater value, but will be used for currency instead of being required for survival.

“Not only do you actually have to go out and look for food and water, but [they] become very valuable and rare resources that can be used to trade and stuff like that,” says Rydby. “But when it comes to having to drink water and eat food to be able to survive, that’s not really what we want from it. Food and water will be a very important part of the game, but players will not need to eat and drink to stay alive.”

Also according to Dydby, players will start off in the always-online game world with 72 hours-worth of very basic equipment and supplies, but will want to find and equip better items as soon as possible.

“Moving throughout the world, it’s going to be a lot about looting and acquiring new gear as you progress. We’re focusing a lot on the RPG aspects of the game since we are very much an RPG, so acquiring loot and gearing up your character is going to be a very big part of the game.”

Players won’t be choosing a “class” outright in The Division, but will instead define themselves by making certain decisions throughout a playthrough. Massive wants these choices to be “tough” but “fun” at the same time, according to the interview.

Karlson added that “finding your play style is going to be a big part of your journey through the game. Part of that is of course to find what tools are [your] favorites and are best for the way [you] want to play.” It will take a bit of work to find exactly what you really want, but Kalson explains that players won’t have to worry too much about conserving items like ammunition, despited the game’s heavy focus on survival.

Rydby also added that “there’s going to be a very active black market where players can trade their resources and the guns and the gear that they find in the world for other things to help them progress and to help them survive in the world. So yes, trading will very much be a part of the game.”

Because exploration in a co-operative, always-online world can be difficult when players want to move to different parts of the world, “being able to communicate within your group is very important, so you will be able to see where everyone is and then give hints and direction to points of interest,” says Karlson, though specifics are still being worked out in the studio.

Whether or not you’ll be able to use vehicles to explore the world is also still up for debate, though Karlson did mention that “the way you navigate and move through the city or a game that is open in nature, it’s very core to how you experience the world.”

As was made clear in the recent Snowdrop Engine showcase trailer, Rydby says “the immersion and fidelity of the world is very core to our philosophy, so with weather changing and day/night changing dynamically, those are going to be very big parts to the game.” He went on to say that the game world and the way it’s designed will feature a number contrasting environments that “stay true to the spirit of New York.”

Lastly, though Karlson didn’t want to spoil too much when it comes to AI, he did reveal that “being an open-world game, we’re in New York City and it’s not the apocalypse we’re mid-crisis, so you’re not going to be alone in the city, that’s for sure.”

Ubisoft Massive is looking forward to launching The Division during the Winter of 2014 on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Bungie Talks RPG Elements in Destiny – Loot Drops, Character Builds, and High-Difficulty Encounters

Halo might not be known for its in-depth RPG elements, but that hasn’t stopped hardcore fans from investing blood, sweat, and tears into the game.

Comparing Destiny to games like Borderlands, Dark Souls and Monster Hunter, Green explains how the studio aims to keep players engaged with more meaningful loot drops, high-difficulty encounters and activities, and by getting players to commit to certain character builds.

Check out the six and a half-minute interview with Green in the features section above and be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Battlefield 4 – New PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 Game Updates Now Available, Patch Notes

It’s like Christmas, but for Battlefield 4 patches!

The PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 have all received substantial Battlefield 4 game updates today, similar to the update that went live for the PC version just  yesterday.

UPDATE: The same update is now live on the Xbox One version of Battlefield 4. Check out the notes below.

They all include a number of major fixes, including a reduction in the probability of “kill trading”, which the patch notes do a good job of describing in detail below. So, go ahead and scroll down to your platform to read up on the latest fixes.

December 17 PlayStation 4 Patch Notes

  • Reduced the probability of the “Kill trade” issue (see below for details).
  • Fixed a common crash that could occur during round transition.
  • Fixed a crash that could happen for players that had lots of friends.
  • Fixed a problem where the “end of round” screen was adding up scores several times in the rank bar, resulting in the rank bar showing a higher value or rank than players really had.
  • Fix for the game mode specific ribbons being counted twice in the multiplayer progression.
  • Fix for a graphical glitch that could appear on terrain.
  • Fixed an engine audio dropout that could happen when driving IFV’s.
  • Fix for a camera glitch that could occur when players were switching weapons while moving in crouched stance.
  • Fixed an animation bug for passengers on the China Rising dirt bike to make sure that the character is pointing in the direction where the player is actually aiming.
  • Fix for an issue where 4x the damage from a vehicle’s minigun would be applied to the chest when a player had the Defense specialization equipped.
  • Tweaked the War Tape audio setting to remove distortion.
  • Fix for the SUAV (introduced in the China Rising expansion pack) not exploding when hitting enemy soldiers. While these indeed should be deadly, they were never designed for “roadkilling” opponents.
  • Servers with users playing on them are now by default placed on the top in the Server Browser.
  • Servers that friends are playing on have a higher priority in the server list.
  • Server Browser is no longer showing empty or full servers by default.
  • Servers that are completely empty will be shown only when the “Empty” option is checked in the Server Browser filter.
  • Server Browser filter will count a server as full if all “Soldier” slots are occupied, unless the “Free Commander” slot is checked.
  • Balancing jet handling across all stealth and attack jet classes.
  • Fixed a bug in Defuse mode where defenders could win a round by killing all the attackers without disarming the bomb. If the attackers arm the bomb, the defenders need to disarm it to win, even if they have killed all the attackers.
  • Fix for players getting stuck in the revive screen.
  • Fix for players getting stuck in the kill camera after being revived. Note that you might see a graphical bug on-screen after being revived when accepting a revive within 1 second. This graphical bug will be removed in the next patch.
  • Fix for a Defuse bug where none of the teams would win a round by letting the timer run out.
  • Fixed the instance where players suddenly would transition into Spectator Mode while playing the Defuse game mode.
  • Fix for the death camera/screen being displayed too early.
  • Raised the first-person camera slightly for walking in crouch to more accurately reflect the actual position of the character.
  • Lowered IED explosion sound to not bottom out the HDR.
  • General stability improvements.

Kill trading issue

We’ve addressed the so-called “Kill trading”. This refers to when two players fire at each other and, seemingly, both die at the same time. The time window where a bullet could cause damage from an already dead player is now calculated as intended, decreasing the time frame when players with high latency could get a kill, even though they should be dead according to the server. This should reduce the probability of kill trading.

December 17 PlayStation 3 Patch Notes

  • General stability improvements.
  • Fixed one of the most frequently occurring crashes that could happen during round transition.
  • Reduced the probability of the “Kill trade” issue (see below for details).
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when bringing up the scoreboard.
  • Fix for player tags not always showing quickly enough. This could often lead to confusion or team kills on Hardcore servers.
  • Populated servers are now by default placed on the top in the Server Browser, where previously empty servers would be shown.
  • Servers that friends are playing on have a higher priority in the server list.
  • Fixed the instance where players suddenly would transition into Spectator Mode while playing the Defuse game mode.
  • Fix for players getting stuck in the revive screen after being killed.
  • Fix for players getting stuck in the kill camera after being revived. Note that you might see a graphical bug on-screen after being revived when accepting a revive within 1 second. This graphical bug will be removed in the next patch.

  • Fix for an issue where 4x the damage from a vehicle’s miniguns would be applied to the chest when a player had the Defense specialization equipped.
  • Balanced vehicle miniguns to do more damage versus infantry.
  • Fix for the game mode specific ribbons being counted twice in the multiplayer progression.
  • Fixed a bug in Defuse mode where defenders could win a round by killing all the attackers without disarming the bomb. If the attackers arm the bomb, the defenders need to disarm it to win, even if they have killed all the attackers.
  • Fixed an issue where players could get stuck in infinite loading when connecting to a server.
  • Fix for side gunners in attack boats and transport helicopters experiencing jitter when aiming.
  • Fixed the issue with Levolution events sometimes not being triggered properly when playing the Rush, Defuse, Obliteration and Team/Squad Deathmatch game modes.
  • Removed the SCAR-H and Ace 52 damage tweaks that were included in a previous patch.

Ever wonder what Call of Duty’s Nuketown might look like in a Grand Theft Auto game?

GTA Online player LiarInGlass has recreated one of Call of Duty‘s most iconic multiplayer maps in GTA Online with the help of the recently released Content Creator.

Nuketown was first introduced in Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops as a small, action-packed multiplayer map with a quirky retro feel, which was later reimagined in the game’s sequel, Black Ops 2, in a futuristic Jetsons-inspired setting. It has since become one of Call of Duty’s most iconic and most popular maps in the series’ history.

Check it out recreated in GTA Online:

Destiny’s End-Game Challenges Will Require Co-Op Play

Developers at Bungie want you to be able to experience Destiny on your own, but they clearly have co-operation in mind when in comes to succeeding at some of Destiny’s end-game challenges.

“You absolutely are going to be able to play Destiny by yourself and have the same kind of fun shooter-experience that you could have in a single-player campaign, which is a word that we’ve weeded out of our vocabulary,” Bungie’s Jason Jones recently told Game Informer.

“But we’re going to give you this great player-progression on top of that, and we’re going to give you as many opportunities as we possibly can to expose you to other people, so that hopefully you’re drawn into some social experiences, because those are incredibly powerful and interesting, but we’re not going to force those on you.”

If you plan on tackling some of the game’s end-game challenges, however, grouping up may be a requirement.

“We describe it in a lot of ways as sloping the floor towards socialization, without putting a requirement on it,” he explained. “I would say that there’s some sort of – if you wanted to talk about it in MMO terms, you’d say ‘end-game activities’, but some of the most intense non-competitive activities in the game do require cooperation. They require a group of players to tackle at once.”

“I guess at some variable, distant endpoint we are going to say, ‘Yeah, if you show up at this door, and you don’t have five friends, you’re not going to be able to succeed,’ but the core experience that solo players have enjoyed in shooters, they’re going to be able to get that, and we’re going to pull many of them into social experiences as well.”

How do you plan on playing Destiny when it launches on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 this September 9; as a lone wolf, or with as many friends as possible?

Thanks, VG247.

New Battlefield 4 Server Update and PC Game Update Available, Improves “Netcode”

Yet another game update is live for the PC version of Battlefield 4.

A nearly 900MB game update will greet you the next time you log in to Battlefield 4 on the PC. No patch notes are yet available, but we are told they will be shortly. Check back for updates.

Perhaps a few more points can be crossed off DICE list of 22 things to fix in Battlefield 4.

UPDATE 1: A general Battlefield 4 server update (R16) has also been applied to all platforms. Check out the patch notes right here.

UPDATE 2: The Battlefield 4 December 16 PC patch notes have been made available.

Battlefield 4 R16 Server Update Notes

  • Fix for some of the more common server crashes
  • Overall performance enhancements
  • UCAV ammo replenish time was set from 20 to 90 seconds
  • Round time limit intervals were added for the different server types

Battlefield 4 PC Patch Notes – December 16

We have noticed that players who have SLI enabled on their graphics card may experience graphical flickering. Also, we’re looking into the issue where the revive bar would get stuck on-screen in some instances. Both of these have our attention, and we’re investigating them.

  • Fix for a crash that would cause the game to stall, resulting in a sound loop. This should eliminate most of the problems relating to this.
  • Fix for the SUAV (introduced in the China Rising expansion pack) not exploding when hitting enemy soldiers. While these indeed should be deadly, they were never designed for “roadkilling” opponents.
  • Fixed one of the issues related to the so-called “Netcode” (see below for details).
  • Fix for an issue where 4x the damage from a vehicle’s minigun would be applied to the chest when a player had the Defense specialization equipped.
  • Fix for player tags not always showing when needed to, resulting in players shooting team members.
  • Fix for graphical flickering appearing on terrain.
  • Fixed the instance where players suddenly would transition into Spectator Mode while playing the Defuse game mode.
  • Fix for a Defuse bug where none of the teams would win a round by letting the timer run out.
  • Fix for players getting stuck in the revive screen after being killed.
  • Fix for players getting stuck in the kill camera after being revived.
  • Fix for the game mode specific ribbons being counted twice in the multiplayer progression.
  • Made NVidia 331.82 or later driver versions mandatory for all players.
  • Disabled DirectX 11.1 on NVidia cards that have outdated drivers.
  • Fixed driver version not being properly detected on NVidia Optimus systems.
  • Fixed a minor crash that could occur when bringing up the scoreboard.

“Netcode” improvement

We’ve addressed the so-called “Kill trading”. This refers to when two players fire at each other and, seemingly, both die at the same time. The time window where a bullet could cause damage from an already dead player is now calculated as intended, decreasing the timeframe when players with high latency could get a kill, even though they should be dead according to the server.

Like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, Valve has taken to the living room for your gaming needs and wants.

But unlike the big three, Valve is doing things differently and bringing hardcore gamers to the living room with an impressive rig, a revolutionized controller, and the new SteamOS.

Below, user Corey Nelson has recorded an unboxing video of the newly delivered hardware.

Digital Versions Of Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Being Pulled Soon, Last Chance To Download

Those of you who love fast-paced, seizure-inducing, cross-over fighters and still haven’t purchased a digital copy of either Marvel Vs Capcom 3 or it’s successor, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Now is your last chance to do so.

Capcom will be pulling down both versions of the fighter as soon as December 1, due to contract issues with the folks over at Marvel. This also means that physical copies of Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 will be very rare to find, much like physical copies of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 back in the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox days.

However, there is some good news in this. According to ComboFiend, a rep for Capcom has stated that there’s an ongoing 50 percent off sale for DLC related to both titles on PSN with details of Xbox Live Marketplace seeing a similar sale very soon.

If Capcom does lose the Marvel license, any dream cross-over fighting games you would love to see? Let us know in the comment section below!

Rainbow 6: Patriots Is Not Dead, Just Being “Remade”

The counter-terrorist, squad-based, tactical shooter that bears the late Tom Clancy’s name is still happening, according to developers Ubisoft. Fans of the long running Rainbow Six franchise need not worry.

Yesterday, IGN learned that Rainbow 6: Patriots is indeed not dead. It’s just being remade.

“We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn’t working. So [they had] to start again,” North American president Laurent Detoc told the website. “There’s an editorial group in Ubisoft, a big group, very influential. If the game is not good enough, they say it’s not good enough. Most of the time, the team will say, ‘yeah, I know.’ But sometimes they want to continue in a direction where you say, ‘no, it’s not going to work.’”

“Rainbow had to be remade,” he explained. “Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when it comes out. It’s one of those examples where you try, it doesn’t work, you try again. If it doesn’t work, we’re not going to bring it to you.”

Detoc also commented on the possibility of the next Rainbow 6 game being called something other than Patriots and shifting focus away from counter-terrorism. “Could it become a shooter with another name in the end, because the team doesn’t want to do counter-terrorist guys? Say they want to be in a mercenary setting? That’s possible,” he said.

Rainbow 6: Patriots was announced during E3 2011 an has since only surfaced in the media a handful of times – mostly rumors. In an earlier piece, MP1st’s James Lara asked “Where Did It Go?“, suggesting that a re-announcement might be in order. The more concrete news of its status certainly comes as a pleasant surprise.
