Battlefield 4 – Rogue Transmission: T-Rex Easter Eggs

It goes without saying that DICE likes to mess with us when it comes to dinosaurs in Battlefield.

So it should come as no surprise that thousands of players have taken to scouring every inch of Paracel Storm and Rouge Transmission this week looking for the ever-elusive and seemingly extinct Megalodon and goat eating Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Personally, I enjoy distractions like this.  While yes it might be a waste of time to go around a map examining every texture, at the same time it’s nice that players are working together rather than killing and cursing at each other.

If or when any new information makes it online, I’ll be sure to do a follow up article/video, especially if it’s anything that means we must go faster.

Happy hunting!

Update 1

Our friends Westie and Danny have managed to activate and record some of these dinosaur-related Easter Eggs on Rogue Transmission. If you don’t scare easily, check out the videos below:

Update 2

Another video from Karwin Leutscher, like the videos above, shows off the relationship between the newly discovered T-rex etching, the second button, the dino-roars and the rustling trees. It’s safe to say we’ve cracked this Easter Egg.

[youtube id=”Y_65C87-vcI”]

Now, where’s that Megalodon?

You may have seen Destiny‘s E3 2013 gameplay demo a thousand times over by now, but why not one more time, this time with some commentary from the studio that made the game.

Earlier today, developers Bungie re-released the very same demo that debuted during this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, but with commentary from some of the game’s art directors and designers. They delve a bit deeper into some of the game’s tech and give away a few extra tidbits of information. You can watch the video in the featured section above.

We recently learned a ton of gameplay, character, and environment details about Destiny from the latest issue of GameInformer which you can catch up on right here. Also, be sure to check out the game’s latest trailer that debuted last week at the VGX awards.

Destiny was recently announced to launch on September 9, 2014, with access to the game’s beta this Summer.

Cliff Bleszinski Working On A “Proper” Arena Shooter For PC

Cliff Bleszinksi, known for his work on the Unreal and the Gears of War series, has a few new ideas for a “proper” arena shooter that he wants to turn into a reality.

Appearing on the latest “Pointless” podcast, he was asked about some of his current plans as a video game designer.

“I have a pitch, I have concept art, I know pretty much what I wanna do. (…) It will be a PC experience that will harken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on, if you know what I’m saying.”

He then told listeners that he wanted to do a “proper” arena shooter.

“A first-person shooter. It’s in my DNA. It’s one of those things – a lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don’t think they’d know what a proper arena shooter is if it’d hit them across the fucking head.”

“I’ve shown [the project] to various parties, and there are nibbles (…) I wanna do something. It’s just I’m not gonna do it if the time is not right and if the funding’s not right.”

Developers Illfonic tried their own hand at a more modern take on the classic genre with Nexuiz, an arena shooter build on Crytek’s CryEngine. It was a game that I particularly enjoyed on Xbox Live, but as things go, it didn’t foster enough attention and servers have since shut down.

Perhaps an arena shooter with a big name like Cliff Bleszinski behind it might just do the trick. How would you fancy a proper return to the roots of FPS gaming? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks, Kotaku.

Battlefield 4 – DICE Wants Your Help To Identify PlayStation 4 Crashes

DICE is looking for your assistance in targeting the cause of a common crash seen in the PlayStation 4 version of Battlefield 4.

Though the game recently received an update on the PS4 that looked into resolving a “large amount” of client crashes, the studio is still looking for the root of the “CE-34878-0 crash” error that you might have seen pop up now and again.

“We know that players on PS4 can get the “CE-34878-0 crash” error message,” writes “Trydling” in a recent Battlelog update. “This is in fact a general error code that you can receive when the game has crashed for a number of different reasons that are not related.”

How you can help is actually pretty simple and doesn’t require a ton of effort.

“You can help us to identify these individual issues by providing a few details in the crash report (we read all of them),” he adds. “For example what game mode you were playing and on what map you crashed. Doing this will help us a lot to reproduce the issues and investigate fixes for them in upcoming patches.”

So, perhaps keep that in mind the next time you come across the error.

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One System Updates Now Live, Patch Notes

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One received system updates in the past few days, but what were they all about?

The updates made their way to the new consoles yesterday, December 10, and should both be available to download as of this writing. Check out the details below.

PlayStation 4 System Update 1.52

According to PlayStation’s official Twitter handle, the PlayStation 4 system update 1.52 is now live and primarily focuses on improving stability. No detailed patch notes were made available.

Sony reminds users that they can enable Auto Downloads and leave their console in standby mode to receive updates automatically.

Xbox One System Update

As Larry “Major Nelsion” Hyrb writes in his latest blog update, there are two ways you can download the latest system update that went live yesterday, Tuesday, December 10.

If you are not using the Xbox One’s “Instant On” feature, you will be required to download and install the update after Thursday, December 12 at 2am PST.

If you are using Xbox One’s “Instant On” feature, the following will happen:

  • “Your console will automatically download the update after you turn it off. Once the update has been downloaded in the background, your console will power completely down. Please note: You will need to manually power your console back on after the update has been downloaded. Because the update will power your console completely down, the “Xbox On” voice command won’t be available until after the update is fully installed.”
  • “When you turn the console on you’ll see the update being applied. After that, your Xbox One will reboot. You’ll know the update is installing when you see the Xbox logo on the green background (like at the top of this post.) This can take anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Once the update has finished installing, you’ll boot to the Home screen and you’re all set.”
  • “Don’t worry, if you are out of town for the holidays, you console also does regular checks for updates and will download it in the background even if you have not used you Xbox One in a couple of days.”

Here are the official update notes:

  • Addresses SmartGlass issues for some users when coming in and out of connected standby
  • Addresses multiplayer issues for some users when re-joining games
  • Addresses issues with inconsistent notifications for some users
  • Addresses dashboard performance for some users
  • Offers improvements for Xbox One’s TV, system update, and content update services for scaling over time
  • Updated wireless networking driver to improve connectivity issues for some users

Have you had any issues downloading either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 system updates? Notice any improvements?

Battlefield 4 Xbox One Game Update Delayed, Combined With Next Update

The Battlefield 4 Xbox One game update that was originally intended to launch around or shortly after the week of December 2 has been delayed.

Instead, developers DICE are combining its contents with the next upcoming Xbox One update which the studio says is currently in testing.

“Here’s a quick update on the state of the next Xbox One game update,” writes “Trydling” in a recent Battlelog update. “The update that was originally meant to go live the week of Dec 2 was delayed, but we decided to bring those fixes to the next upcoming Xbox One update.”

“This new combined Xbox One patch is currently in testing and certification, and we will release it as soon as possible. We are hoping to get it live late this week or early next week. We will keep you updated.”

“We will share the full change notes for this patch as it goes live. It will focus on stability and some of the feedback we’ve seen from the community, including a fix for the one-hit kill bug and Commander EMP blur effect.”

Stay tuned for patch notes!

Microsoft Issues Battlefield 4 Premium Refunds To Disgruntled Customers

In an effort to calm upset Battlefield 4 Premium subscribers across the Xbox One and Xbox 360, Microsoft has begun issuing full refunds for the Premium service.

The service, which currently costs $49.99 USD, gives players access to downloadable content two weeks early and at a discount, exclusive events like double XP weekends, exclusive customization options and a few other goodies available only to Premium members. However, those unhappy with Battlefield 4’s performance since launch are seeking refunds, which Microsoft appears to be entertaining.

Bugs, crashes, and other issues affecting the game’s performance have become so severe that developers DICE recently issued a statement indicating that progress on future projects would be halted in an effort to bring the game up to standards. Meanwhile, subscribers of the service have begun requesting refunds, and as EuroGamer points out, reports on the Battlelog are showing signs of success. Though, those who have requested a refund were unable to keep their Premium status.

It’s currently unclear if Sony or Origin offers refunds for the service as well.

If you too are uncertain of the game’s performance, be sure to read up on 22 Battlefield 4 bugs that are being fixed.

Thanks, VG247.

Battlefield 4 PlayStation 4 Game Update Addresses “Large Amount” of Client Crashes

PlayStation 4 users enjoying Battlefield 4 are in for a bit of an update today.

The patch, which may already be live for a number of users as of this writing, intends to address stability issues affecting a “large amount” of crashes on the PlayStation 4 and will finally fix those pesky audio and EMP bugs.

If you’re not seeing the patch just yet, try rebooting your PlayStation 4. You might have been playing as it went live.

Developer “Trydling” adds in his recent Battlelog update that DICE is “…already working on the next update based on your feedback.” Check out the December 11 patch notes below:

Dec 11 Battlefield 4 PlayStation 4 Game Update Notes

  • General stability fixes that should remove a large amount of the client crashes we are currently seeing on the PS4
  • Fixed the audio drop outs that could occur when playing on large maps. Typical map affected was Golmud Railway in Conquest with 64 players. Ambient sound would sometimes cut out, like foley sounds from player running, vehicle engine sounds, vehicle movement sounds, and map ambient sounds
  • Removed the blur effect on soldiers that appeared when Commanders were using EMP attacks
  • Further reduced the probability of getting a corrupt save file by doing miscellaneous changes to the save file system. These include removing the save file saving again when quitting multiplayer
  • Fixed multiple crashes that could occur when bringing up the in-game Battlelog during round transition
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when using the BattleScreen
  • Fixed a random crash related to destroying vehicles
  • Fixed minor destruction issues in the terrain

Hidden Battlefield 4 Premium Assignment Discovered, “Phantom Prospect”

As it turns out, there might more to Battlefield 4’s latest China Rising expansion pack than what meets the eye.

At first glance, China Rising appears to bring a number of new goodies to the table like four new maps, new weapons, and new assignments, among other things. But hidden away is a secret Premium-exclusive assignment you may not have known about.

As Reddit user blubakumi has discovered, visiting the “Learderboards” page on the Battlelog and scrolling down to the bottom will reveal an easy-to-miss, very faded image of a skull. Clicking it will bring up this command prompt, as seen below:

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 12.08.16 PM

Inputting the password “bumpinthenight” (credit to Reddit user cromusz) will yield the results, “>> Assignment unlocked. Unlock phase completed. Welcome to the Phantom Program… Stand by for further instructions.”

Note: You may have to play around with different browsers to get it to work.

Visiting your “Assignment” page on the Battlelog afterwards will reveal a brand new China Rising-exclusive, Premium-only assignment called “Phantom Prospect”. To complete it, you’ll need 200 kills with an assault rifle, 200 kills with main battle tanks, and a 300 meter headshot.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 12.12.56 PM

As you can see, I still have some work to do, but completing the tasks will reward you with a pretty nifty dog tag that you can show off to all your friends (and enemies).

Have any of you completed the assignment already?

Thanks, MattTheMusketeer.
