Why I’d Buy a Wii U over the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One

This holiday season is going to be pretty crazy.  Between all kinds of new electronics, smartphones, and software coming out, we have new consoles to buy.  As an avid gamer, what excites me most about gaming platforms is the unique experiences they can offer.

[youtube id=”thmvQkzLHVA” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Unfortunately, it seems like both Sony and Microsoft have forgone creating unique exclusives in an effort to more directly compete with one another.  Yes, both consoles have some pretty awesome exclusives that I’m sure will influence which console A LOT of people buy, but neither really has a “that game” title.  I remember games like Halo and Mario 64, those were console-sellers.

The Wii U, however, has plenty of content you can’t get anywhere else, plus most of the multi-platform games coming to it’s beefier cousins.

Now I know not everyone is into Nintendo games.  Generally thought of as the “kiddie console,” the Wii U hasn’t been the smash hit the Wii was, nor has it seemed to really excite gamers the way the Wii did.  Even people that weren’t into Mario and Zelda were buying Wiis.  The Wii U’s biggest issue is Nintendo hasn’t really made it clear how fantastic a console the Wii U is.  Not only does every 1st party exclusive for the Wii U run in 1080p at 60FPS, it has the power to run almost all of the next-gen titles as well, something the Wii seriously lacked.

So while you might not be a big fan of Nintendo games, what interests me most and why I think the Wii U has is worth buying, is how original the experiences are that it offers.  You can’t get Nintendo titles on the PS4 or Xbox One.  And considering how many cross-platform games are coming to the Wii U, between my gaming PC and it, I really don’t see a need for the PS4 or Xbox One as a gamer.

All that said, if I didn’t already have a gaming PC, I might rethink my desire for the Wii U.  But even if I didn’t have a gaming PC, I’d still look at the Wii U as a strong “gamer’s” console.  It has a lot to offer, you just have to dig a little to see it.

If you’re considering buying a Wii U, do yourself a favor and wait for an HD screen update for the controller (rumored to be announced by Nintendo soon) and a bundle with Mario Kart 8.

PlayStation 4 – Publishers Can Decide If Free-To-Play Titles Require PS Plus

Unlike it’s predecessors, the PlayStation 4 will require an PS Plus account in order to play online multiplayer, Sony revealed during their 2013 E3 press conference.

However, it seems that not all games will require an PS plus account, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Boss, Shushei Yoshida. As Yoshida confirmed to Polygon, free-to-play titles such as Planetside  and DC universe will be playable online, regardless of your account status.

Yoshida also revealed that the publishers of other free-to-play titles that are coming to the PlayStation 4, such as Blacklight: Retribution, can decide whether or not to make a PS plus account a requirement in order to have access to it’s online multiplayer.

The PlayStation 4 is set to be released sometime this holiday season for $399 USD.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Competitive Multiplayer and eSports are “Not Going Anywhere,” Says IW

Watch Dogs – Online Players Will Feel Like Normal Single-Player NPC’s

Ubisoft has been awfully quiet about Watch Dogs multiplayer, so much that they even demoed it behind closed doors at this years E3 without even the invitees knowing that it was a multiplayer showing.

In the latest blog post on the official Ubisoft Blog, the viewers watched as the main character, Aiden, was wandering around doing what appeared to be some single-player activities. Within ten minutes of the demo, Aiden received an alert on his phone, saying that he was being hacked.

MPhack

“With time running out, Aiden hacks a camera to scan a wider range, and he spots a suspicious-looking NPC crouching in a nearby alley. Aiden sets off to stop him, a chase ensues, and then a firefight. In this particular demo, Aiden ends up shooting the hacker, thus stopping his malicious virus install.

And then the lights go up.

The lights, in this case, are from another room in our behind-closed-doors demo at E3 2013. Animation director Colin Graham, who was playing the game for us, points to his co-worker, also playing the game, now visible through a previously darkened window. That was no NPC, after all. This is Watch Dogs multiplayer in action.”

You may be wondering to yourself if this means we get custom characters. Here’s the beauty of the multiplayer for Watch Dogs: Everyone is Aiden (the main character), but we won’t see each other. Instead, we will, in fact, appear as ordinary NPC’s from the game. We’ll be able to hack one another, or “grief,” which will basically prevent the other player from stopping a crime, and even do missions with one another. Luckily though, the feature is disabled during story and side-missions, so you don’t have to worry about people ruining those aspects of the game for you, and even if you still don’t believe that there’s an option to turn it off completely.

Hopefully well have more details (no promises) later on this week as our very own David Veselka will be wondering the Ubisoft booths tomorrow at E3.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – IW Executive Producer on 60 FPS, 1080p, Wii U and Intelligent AI [Update]

CORRECTION

The info in this article is based off an older story published by EuroGamer back in June. While most of the info pertaining to frames, resolution and AI hold true, a Wii-U version of Call of Duty: Ghosts has clearly already been announced. It can, therefore, be disregarded for the most part.

Sincere apologies to all readers.

– David Veselka \\ Editor-in-Chief

While some may argue that Call of Duty has never been known for it’s breathtaking, jaw-dropping graphics, you’ll be hard pressed to find a console game that is as crisp or runs as smooth and at such a fast pace that the series manages to achieve with each release.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, making its way to next-gen hardware like Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, is no different.

Speaking to EuroGamer, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin talked about the importance of keeping Ghosts running at a smooth frame rate while boasting the highest resolution possible.

“We’re always so focused there anyway,” he said. “It maybe wasn’t a challenge as it is for some people. For us it’s so ingrained in the way we make our games that it just happens that way. We have a game that runs at 60 frames a second, we start putting stuff in and if something starts to affect that we’ll either tweak it or take it out.

“The console versions are still in severe development, but it looks good so far. We actually have a 4K TV at work and got the game running on that. It looks phenomenal. The 4K TVs have a max hertz of 30, so we’re maxing it out. It looks amazing!”

While Call of Duty: Ghosts may run at 60 frames per second while achieving a 1080p resolution on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Rubin also stresses the importance that the studio places on factors like intelligent AI.

“There’s more processing power,” Rubin continued. “There’s definitely the tech advantages of next-gen consoles, but from our perspective our primary concern when it comes to single-player especially when you have AI is telling a good story.

“We’ve always as a studio, and I go back to COD2 and COD4 days, took our inspiration from movies, not from other games. It’s pretty well known, Call of Duty is that cinematic experience. We’ve always focused more on the cinematic value. For this game that’s the case as well.

“But the next-gen consoles do allow us to do some things with AI. It’s more situational than just saying AI in general – that’s such a blanket term. We’re able to create more new and interesting situations that maybe we haven’t seen before.”

Near the end of Rubin’s interview with EuroGamer, he teased that a Wii U version of Ghosts is, in fact, in the works, despite the console’s absence from the game’s list of launch platforms, mentioning that fans should “stay tuned.”

E3 2013 – Tom Clancy’s The Division Allows Players to Control Drone On Tablets

While second screen experiences have generally been reserved for Wii U owners, next-gen titles are now getting in the mix such as Battlefield 4 and Tom Clancy’s The Division. In The Division, players will be able to control a support drone via tablet to assist teammates in combat.

[youtube id=”CdWwhWxfmvE” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Around the 3:55 mark in the above gameplay footage, you’ll notice a user-controlled drone enters the battle. Upon release of The Division, players will be able to download a companion app for either Android or iOS to control the drone. Although not specifically stated, it seems the app will only function with tablets but not smartphones. According to Creative Director Nicklas Cederström, players can participate even if they aren’t connected to WiFi. If your tablet has a cellular data option or you have a mobile hotspot, gaming on-the-go will be possible.

Unlike Battlefield 4’s Commander Mode, players will be able to participate real-time in the game from an isometric view. The drone can assist teammates by healing members individually, providing buffs such as damage boost or nerfs such as armor reduction, spotting hidden enemies, and firing missiles.

What do you think about The Division’s second screen experience? Will you use your tablet to control the drone? Let us know in the comments below.

Thanks, Polygon

Battlefield 4 Dev Pokes Fun at Call of Duty: Ghosts ‘Moving Fish’

A Battlelog Producer known as “DICE_TheBikingViking” on Reddit recently took a bit of a playful cheap shot at Infinity Ward and their upcoming game, Call of Duty: Ghosts and, boy, was it a low one.

To set it up, many already know that moving fish was mentioned as a small part of some of the new tech behind Infinity Ward’s new, next-gen Call of Duty engine.

Well, the internet, being the internet, does what it does best and this is just one of those things that will seemingly never escape Call of Duty’s marketing history.

Here’e the interaction, as seen on Reddit:

BaZ55yd

Ouch, right?

All kidding aside, there are cooler things about Call of Duty’s new engine other than moving fish. If you haven’t yet, make sure to catch this recent Call of Duty: Ghosts tech-demo showing off some of the game’s new visual effects.

E3 2013 – Battlefield 4 Multiplayer: First Impressions

I’m a happy camper. Why? Because DICE is doing some really awesome things with Battlefield 4 multiplayer and I just got to play it on the E3 2013 show floor along with 65 other players on the PC. (Yes, that’s 65 players. I’ll explain later.)

There are a lot of really exciting things I want to tell you right away, but let’s start with the basics.

BF4-1

Improvements to the user interface are very noticeable and very appreciated. Menus are simply better and much easier to use, but carry over the same visual stylings of Battlefield 3 with that blue/white color scheme. The character customization menu – probably one of the more cumbersome aspects of Battlefield 3’s UI – now neatly organizes items in list-form, rather than having multiple pages of different customization options. Going down the list, you’ll be able to tweaks your primary weapon, secondary weapon, gadget 1, gadget 2, grenades, knife, specialization, and appearance.

Of course, only a few weapons were made available in the E3 demo, two per weapon class. Each soldier (Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon) could select their class-specific weaponry but also had the option of using multi-class weapons like carbines and shotguns, as in Battlefield 3. However, weapons did have a number of paint options right off the bat, roughly 10 or so. Also different from Battlefield 3 is that gadgets are shared between both gadget slots, meaning you’re completely free to customize your gadget loadout as preferred.

Update

One item I forgot to mention is that secondary weapons can now be customized with attachments.

Speaking of gadgets, the thing that had me really jumping for joy is that the Recon class now has the ability to equip C4 (UPDATE: and the motion mine), greatly enhancing their effectiveness on the Battlefield. Being my personal favorite kit, I am extremely happy to be able to deal with vehicular threats in a greater capacity, similar to the Recon class in the Battlefield: Bad Company series. Weapons also seem to have a greater number of attachment options. For example, not only can you equip a sight, but you can also equip a magnification option or another iron sight, providing you with two options, instead of one.

BF4-2

New grenade types are also introduced. Players now have the option to equip incendiary grenades or flash bangs, along with the standard fragmentation grenades. The knife could also be replaced with a shank and there is probably room to unlock different melee weapons on top of that. The opportunity never arose in my play time, but yes, you can reverse melee attacks in Battlefield 4.

Commander mode is back. I didn’t get to play around with it, but I did get killed by the commander on a number of occasions, so I can tell you it’s definitely effective in that sense. The commanders – other members of the DICE/EA, team in this scenario – had their own stations, one on each team, bringing up the number of players up to 66 total, two of which are not active on the actual battlefield. UPDATE: It’s still not 100% clear how commander mode works, but your commander’s abilities are directly tied to the performance of the team. The more capture points a team holds, the more abilities the commander has at his/her disposal. Look forward to more details on Commander later this week.

BF4-5

Since my time was very limited, I wasn’t able to explore the nuances of gameplay, but in general, it seemed very similar to Battlefield 3, with the exception of a greater focus on sea warfare. We played on the “Siege of Shanghai” map teased in Battlefield 4’s multiplayer trailer, which provided opportunity for all gameplay styles, land, sea and air. Jets were not present in this particular map and, no, I couldn’t explore the entire city-scape, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. DICE was really able to capture the feeling of battling in a towering mega-city like Shanghai, though it may be a bit devoid of any sort of actual civilian population.

Update

A few points I did not experience but will mention anyways is that players can swim and “sprint” underwater. Suppression is also slightly “nerfed,” though it was hard to make out its effectiveness in-game. They way vehicles are disabled has also been tweaked, though it’s not clear exactly how.

You might be happy to know that that tower you saw crash to the ground in the multiplayer trailer is completely player-controlled and is not a timed event, meaning it won’t just crumble once one of the two teams has depleted a certain amount of tickets. It can be taken out by destroying the support beams at its base – not an easy task, however. Taking it out also creates an entirely new landscape in the center of the map. Where the tower once was, now lies ruins and piles of rubble. The flag that was situated at the top of the tower is still there, but at ground level now, taking away the height avantage of any team that owned that flag before hand.

BF4-4

It’s still a bit early, so a number of the things I touched upon in this preview could change before release, so definitely keep that in mind.

Look forward to our interview with DICE general manager and vice president, Karl-Magnus Troedsson, later this week where we’ll learn more about Commander mode and some of Battlefield 4 multiplayer’s other exciting features.

You’ll be able to get your hands on Battlefield 4 multiplayer this October 29 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, earlier if you participate in the game’s Beta and later on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Additional Details

Through a second shot at Battlefield 4’s multiplayer, I am able to confirm a few additional details.

Though it’s not exactly clear how they stack, additional specializations can be unlocked, in-game, via a progress bar that appears next to the mini-map.

On the subject of weapons and customization, I can clarify that primary weapons will, in fact, have four attachment slots, three of which are the sights, barrel, and under-barrel, just as in Battlefield 3. The fourth acts as an “Auxiliary” slot. This is where your additional iron sights and magnification options come in. I experimented with a few new attachments, one of them being the green laser dot attachment as well as the laser+tactical light and various sight attachments for the pistols. So far, the green laser seems to have the same effect as the red laser, but it’s just a lot cooler, in my opinion.

Making the Recon class even more awesome, I can confirm that motion sensor grenades are returning as well. Oddly I was unable to equip any sort of defibrillator for the Assault class as I had trouble finding it in the loadout screens. I was hoping to test out the revive mechanics. The Assault kid did, however, have access to a different type of health pack that I didn’t notice before, on that had effects unknown to me. This is in addition to the regular health pack we’re all used to.

I threw a couple flash bangs and incendiary grenades around and even set fire to one soldier. I assume it has a damage-over-time effect and might even hinder vision. Unfortunately, I was never on the receiving end. The flash bang is fairly standard, turning your screen bright white for a short period.

Very interestingly, I noticed that I ran out of ammo very quickly. Speaking to others, I can confirm that it is because bullets in an expended magazine are completely discarded and forever lost, making the Support kit all the more important. UPDATE: Others also say this belongs to the “Hardcore” mode only and was simply thrown into the E3 2013 multiplayer demo for testing purposes.

Flying a helicopter for the first time, it felt as if they had a bit more drag to them and were ever-so-slightly more difficult to control. I was even using an Xbox One controller, which I am much more used to. I can’t confirm choppers are actually harder to control as of yet, but it did appear that way to me. Also, reloading tank shells took much longer.

Lastly, there is a spectator mode, but I didn’t get a chance to play around with it.

inFAMOUS: Second Son May Have Multiplayer

It seems like inFAMOUS: Second Son may be getting some multiplayer, as suggested in the official PlayStation 4 Brochure that was handed out at this year’s E3.

While details are a bit scarce at the moment, the brochure obtained by VideoGamer contained various titles that we coming to the PS4 and with titles like Knack, the brochure confirmed that it would be a single-player game. However upon inspecting inFAMOUS: Second Son, the details stated that the single player would one player and then listed an online count of  “online players TBC,” which wasn’t shown for other PS4 titles that were only single-player.

It wouldn’t be surprising if this ended up being true, as inFAMOUS 2 did try to push for some online interactions as it had a new feature called “User-Generated-Content” that allowed players to create their own missions and story and share it accross the board with other inFAMOUS 2 owners. It wasn’t exactly multiplayer, but the online interaction was there and inFAMOUS does seem like a title that could do possibly well with a super hero/villain MMO style multiplayer.

For those that don’t know what inFAMOUS: Second Son is, here’s the official trailer and gameplay reveal.
