PlayStation or Xbox One: Which Console to Buy?

There can be no doubt at this point that Sony is coming off as the good guy of E3.  Despite announcing that a paid PSN subscription will be required for online play/features, the PlayStation 4 is shaping up to be a great device if you’re a console gamer.  Given my discontent with the Xbox One, I think a lot of people will be expecting me to endorse the PS4 as the console you should be buying this holiday season.  Well, no duh.

[youtube id=”WkigNzyY5FM” width=”618″ height=”378″]

The fact that you won’t be able to just hand your friend a copy of the next Call of Duty when you get bored of it so they can play it on their Xbox One is so counter to the idea of buying physical games that it’s shocking Microsoft would even consider it.  Add to that single players games having a reliance on an online server system that is eventually going to go offline when it stops being profitable, and you’ve got easily the least free and future proof console ever released.  Yes, chances are it’s going to be standard practice for the next generation of consoles, if there even is one.  But that next generation probably will be 100% digital with no physical content.  To clarify why this is a big deal, see my previous article.

The bottom line is Sony saw what Microsoft got right with the Xbox 360 and wrong with the Xbox One , then copied all the good with none of the bad and built the PS4.  While I’ll admit that the Xbox One’s potential non-gaming media integration is landmark and frankly brilliant, it’s nothing I’m interested in, especially considering I don’t even watch TV.  So unless you’re just buying out of brand loyalty, there’s no reason to NOT buy a PS4 over the Xbox One.

Of course, time will tell if games exclusivity makes either console more attractive, but for now, go PS4 or go PC.

For more information on both consoles, see these articles:

E3 2013 – Check Out Ubisoft’s New Racer ‘The Crew’ With This Announcement Trailer, Releases Early 2014

The Crew, an open-world racer from the folks over at Ubisoft Reflections and Ivory Tower was officially announced during the Ubisoft 2013 E3 conference.

It will feature an online persistent representation of the U.S., allowing players infiltrate criminal organizations in individual cities.

According to Ubisoft, the online persistent world blurs the lines between the game’s single-player, multiplayer, and co-op, as well as changes the status quo of driving games. To back up their words, Ubisoft showed off a demo that featured four players, burning rubber across four different United States cities.

Check out the trailer below:

The Crew is expected to release sometime early 2014, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.

E3 2013 – Tom Clancy’s The Division Announcement Trailer and First Gameplay

Ubisoft outlines a dark future in this first peak at a brand new game coming from the Tom Clancy series.

The Division is a co-op and competitive, third-person multiplayer shooter set in a post-traumatic environment, coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The gameplay is reminiscent of the Ghost Recon series, but instead of a fully-equipped, top-tier soldier, you are a survivor in the ruined streets of America, looking to scavenge supplies and weapons. Not only can you play along side friends, but you can also run into enemy players at a moments notice in a seamless multiplayer experience.

E3 2013 – Microsoft Says Farewell To MS Points, Xbox One Price And Launch Window Revealed, New Xbox 360

The Microsoft E3 2013 conference has finally ended and, with it, an onslaught of new details concerning the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox Live service has been released.

In a move that comes to no surprise to many, Microsoft is finally saying goodbye to the slightly confusing Microsoft Point currency system, which is currently the economic system the Xbox 360 runs on. Microsoft’s own Marc Whitten announced during E3 that all Xbox One items will be priced in your local currency.

Marc has also reveled that the Xbox One will allow users to share Xbox Live gold features with multiple people among your household, something that previously required multiple Gold memberships. Along with this announcement, Microsoft also revealed that the Xbox One will be available in North America sometime this November for a somewhat steep price of $499 USD and €499 (no that’s not a mistake for you European readers).

If you reserve the console now you’ll be able to get a free upgrade to a limited edition commemorative bundle, which comes with a premium edition black box, controller, and a Day One Achievement. Another exciting announcement is that Twitch TV integration is coming to the Xbox One and will allow gamers to record and live broadcast their games directly to their Twitch TV channel.

In other news concerning the Xbox 360, while no price-cut was announced, Microsoft did reveal that they’ll be launching a brand-new redesigned model of the Xbox 360.

Xbox360E_4GB_Console_ST2013_US_Groupshot-610x427Besides the new look, nothing is different with the redesign. The pricing will remain unchanged from the current models that are on store shelves right now.

E3 2013 – Battlefield 4 Second Assault Single Player DLC Available On Xbox One First, New Footage [Update]

Battlefield 4: Second Assault DLC was revealed today during Microsoft’s press conference and as a special gift for Xbox gamers, EA and DICE have announced that the DLC will be available first on the Xbox consoles.

While no multiplayer footage was revealed, DICE did premier some new footage of the DLC running on the Xbox One at 60FPS. The gameplay can be viewed below and takes place in a campaign mission called “Angry Sea.”

[youtube id=”B2GUiuYAkFw” width=”618″ height=”378″]

It might seem like an odd move from DICE to release single player DLC for a game like Battlefield 4, but it looks pretty cool regardless.

Update

It looks like the Second Assault DLC is, indeed, yet another multiplayer DLC – NOT single player DLC. The footage above is of content already included in Battlefield 4’s campaign.
