PS4 Not Backwards Compatible with PS3 PSN Purchases

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios’ head, confirms that your current PSN purchases will not carry over to the newly announced PlayStation 4.

In addition to the PS4 not being backwards compatible with older PlayStation discs, Yoshida told Engadget that PSN purchases will not carry over. The reason behind the incompatibility is that the architecture of the Power-PC-based PS3 is vastly different from the x86-based PS4.

However, Yoshida did promise to bring back some titles “in some form.” Sony’s “longer term” plans include both server-side and cloud services to offer older games.

PlayStation 4 Will Not Block Used Games, 4K Support For ‘Personal Media’ Only

Recent rumors leading up to the PlayStation 4’s reveal suggested the platform would block users from playing used games in an attempt at cutting out the used game market.

Speaking to Sony president Shuhei Yoshida, Eurogamer has learned that this is will not be the case. Allegedly, an anti used-game patent discovered last month, in fact, had nothing to do with the PlayStation 4 at all.

That’s the general expectation by consumers,” said Yoshida. “They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that’s my expectation.”

He later said that the official word was that “used games can play on PS4.”

Speaking to Polygon, Yoshida also commented on the PlayStation 4’s media output resolution, confirming that 4K would only be supported for “personal media” like photos and “camcorder videos” recorded in 4K format.

It will not be supported for video games as games on the PlayStation 4 do not play at that rate.

Battlefield 4 Shown To GameStop Employee, Reveal Incoming?

EA and DICE have unveiled Battlefield 4 to at least one person, perhaps more.

Earlier today, an employee from GameStop stated the following from the company’s official Twitter handle:

Trolling at its finest.

What does this mean for fans? Unfortunately, nothing, officially. But it does hint that an impending Battlefield 4 reveal might be upon us sooner than we think. After all, EA’s competitor Activision recently revealed Destiny, Bungie’s upcoming current and next-gen open-world shooter, and it’s not even coming out this year.

Keeping EA’s and Sony’s contract to release Battlefield 3 DLC on the PlayStation 3 first, might we see some Battlefield 4 during Sony’s big announcement?

What do you guys think?

Thanks, Mr Jigsaw, for the tip!

Gears of War: Judgment – Microsoft Threatens Leaked Copy Owners With Lifetime Xbox Live Ban

Microsoft is taking action against pirates currently playing a leaked version of Gears of War: Judgment for the Xbox 360.

The game in its entirety has surfaced on several torrent sites over night, appearing early this Tuesday morning, a full month before Judgment’s official launch date of March 19.

“We are aware of isolated cases in which Gears of War: Judgment content has been propped on the web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation immediately,” a Microsoft spokesperson recently told Eurogamer.

“Consumers should be aware that piracy is illegal and we take vigorous action against illegal activity related to our products and services.”

Similar actions were taken against those playing early, leaked copies of Halo 4 late last year. Additionally, a recent Xbox 360 dashboard update went live yesterday, adding “Anti-Piracy 3.0,” according to update notes. It’s quite possible this was quickly outed as a measure to deal with leaks and, perhaps, enforce these bans.

added new dashboard style, other security updates. Anti-Piracy 3.0, XGD 4.5 Challenge responses has been updated

“Playing pirated copies of games, such as Gears of War: Judgment, is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use and will result in enforcement action, such as account and console bans.”

Epic Games and People Can Fly recently released a brand new trailer for Gears of War: Judgment showing off some multiplayer action which you can catch right here.

Learn about Gears of War: Judgment multiplayer with a guided tour by the dashing and charming Lt. Damon Baird himself.

Epic Games and People Can Fly are bringing you an all new Gears of War multiplayer experience when Judgment drops this March 19 on the Xbox 360. Expect new game modes, new weapons, new equipment, and of course, new skins and mods.

Team Deathmatch returns, but players may want to try out some of the new modes like Free-for-All, Domination and Overrun, Judgment’s classed-based Horde-vs-Cog multiplayer mode.

An assortment of new grenade types (which can now be thrown without the wind-up) have made their debut as well. Sticky grenades will glue themselves to your opponents, beacon grenades will allow you to see enemies through objects, and the new stim grenades will boost the health of any teammates nearby. You’ll also get a new mid-to-long range sniper rifle to play around with.

New elements to the multiplayer also include more verticality and the new prize boxes which grant bonus XP or other exclusive unlocks.

Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack Is All About Infantry Battles, “Making Of” Video and First Screens

Next Tuesday, February 25th, 343 Industries will be bringing an assortment of small-to-medium sized maps to Halo 4 in the form of the Majestic Map Pack.

This one is all about “what the fans have been asking for,” writes 343i – maps that “shine in small team play and Free For All.” Along with the three new close-quarters maps Landfall, Monolith and Skyline, fans can also look forward to the new game mode, Infinity Rumble.

Landfall’s emphasis is on infantry battles amidst a glittering ocean and a city under siege on a distant world. Monolith is an open battlefield; a Forerunner monument that exposes you to the naked vacuum of space – and the firepower of opposing teams. Skyline puts you in the air on a new construction site, and its distinctly industrial surroundings and sky-high locale provides new challenges in confined spaces.

Check out this “making of” video revealing what went into the creation of the upcoming map pack.

Crytek Has “A Big Plan To Support” Crysis 3

Crytek has “some plans in mind” when it comes to supporting Crysis 3 post-launch.

CVG recently asked Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli if the studio had any DLC plans that might differ from the expected map pack or new game modes like additional campaign or co-op experiences.

“We’re still exploring that,” Yerli answered. “We have some plans in mind that we can’t disclose yet, but we are going to wait a little bit to see how the beta’s running and how the game does for the first few days. We do have a big plan to support it.”

Crysis 2 received two multiplayer map packs in its lifetime, none of which saw any significant playtime. Though, community made maps were also made available to PC users at a later date.

What sort of Crysis 3 DLC plans would you consider “big?” More campaign, co-op and/or other?

On another interesting note, Yerli also told CVG that “people will be astonished that next-gen launch titles from other companies might not be much different” from Crysis 3.

Crysis 3 launches on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this Tuesday, February 19 in North America.
