Black Ops 2 Revolution DLC Review

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s first DLC, Revolution, is surprising. Not only is it the first instance that a competitive multiplayer weapon is included its list of features, but it’s also the first Call of Duty DLC to offer four multiplayer maps (plus a new zombie playground), none of which I dislike.

Not to demean Call of Duty DLC, but when it comes to the roster of new maps, it’s usually not that hard to pick and choose favorites. I find myself struggling this time around to do just that. Grind, Hyrdo, Downhill and Mirage all offer unique gameplay experiences while maintaining strong visual appeal.

Grind, a colorful skate park-themed location based on the Venice Beach area in L.A., is a fast-paced, close-quarters map, but with a bit of a twist. Whilst the center of the map promotes that familiar, indoor, CQB action, the outer circle is riddled with half pipes, ramps and jumps. Thing is, everything is curved, meaning that you don’t get that comforting rectangular cover you’re used to. With less traditional CoD-style cover, the outer areas of this map play out more like a Halo game, or any other arena-style shooter. It’s a welcomed breath of fresh air and its gameplay is seemingly turning out to be one of the more popular choices in matchmaking. One small, but annoying gripe I have with Grind while playing Domination is that the A-flag marker, while walking down the right-most lane from the C-flag spawn, obstructs a deadly sniper nest from which you can easily be taken out from. Yeah, the marker disappears if aiming down sight directly at that particular spot, but it’s impossible to keep tabs on it in your peripherals when advancing up that side. A small inconvenience that could easily be fixed.

Personally, I can’t wait to see the crazy community videos of players taking RC-XD’s off of all the jumps and ramps that will be born from this map.

Black Ops 2

War at a Venice Beach skate park

Hydro, while one of the more visually bland maps, provides some very competitive gameplay. There are three main “lanes” which allow for some seriously tactical domination matches. Some of the most intense matches I’ve experienced thus far have taken place on this map. The interactive element is a nice touch, though not necessary for exciting gameplay. Simply keep an ear out for an audio que indicating the rush of water that flows perpendicularly in a tunnel underneath the map, a tunnel used primarily as a flanking route. A walkway over top of the B-flag serves as a good vantage point as well, but one that can be countered thanks to its two entrances. I can see Hyrdro becoming a favorite amongst the competitive crowd.

Mirage is interesting in that it features a triangular Domination flag layout, meaning you won’t get that tug-of-war style of gameplay you might be used to from Call of Duty. The setting is also rather unique: an exotic, sand storm-hit resort that makes for some seriously uneven terrain. The map is circular in that an outer ring encloses an inner circle which can be extremely deadly to traverse, as there is not a whole lot of cover. Unless your skills are sharp, I recommend advancing along the outsides of the map. Trying to capture the B-flag is a b*tch thanks to the two death-balconies on either side. It sits wide open and bare inside and empty pool with absolutely no cover. It requires some serious teamwork to cover and capture, but how often does that happen in “pub” games? Mirage also happens to be this DLC’s largest map, if not one of Black Ops 2’s largest maps in general.

mirage-pool-closed-for-season

Apparently, the pool is off limits

If tied to an electric chair and absolutely had to choose a favorite here, I would most likely choose Downhill as the most enjoyable map to play on. This map is all about variation. You’ll certainly find some close quarter battles along the cliffside, inside the ski lift area where the gondolas can knock you out cold if not careful. The center lane is sniper valley and also happens to be where the B-flag is located in Domination. While there is not as much cover along the cliff face higher up, the winding paths provide some good flanking routes, but be careful and check your corners. There could be a gunfight around any corner and there’s not much cover to save your ass here. There are also two smaller indoor areas at either end of the map – watch out for campers! I find the overall setting most pleasing, however. Why US Navy SEALS and a group of Mercenaries would engage in combat on a serene ski hill in the French Alps is beyond me, but whatever. It’s a videogame and it’s nice to look at.

Again, none of these maps have made their way to my “avoid” list and probably won’t be any time soon. I’d be more than happy sticking to a DLC-only playlist for days. In this regard, kudos to Treyarch.

The Peacekeeper sub-machine gun DLC weapon is seriously cool. It looks awesome and fits a very particular role nicely. Sitting somewhere in between a SMG and an Assault Rifle, the Peacekeeper can do both long and short range, though it does neither of them amazingly well. It has it’s definite uses without being an over-effective beast machine, something the Call of Duty community was understandably worried about before the launch of Revolution. It’s got a sleek, futuristic look to it with some very workable iron sights and is a very welcomed addition to the arsenal of Black Ops 2’s weapons. It will be interesting to see where Treyarch goes with additional DLC weaponry in future map packs and if they can keep up the same level of balance.

The Peacekeeper SMG – here to keep the peace, and pwn sum noobs

The new Zombies content features a hit and miss. The new survival map, Die Rise, is a panic-inducing, joy ride of exploration and discovery. The new game mode Turned didn’t hold my interest very long at all, however.

Turned is an utterly simple game mode that pits three zombie players against one human fighting for survival. Should a Zombie manage to “turn” a human player, he or she will instantly be transformed into that human who must now set up shop in a good, easily defendable corner and blast away at the rather speedy and lively undead. It’s fun and very fast-paced, but it gets old quickly – the sort of mindless fun you might enjoy with a group of friends over tea and biscuits. (That’s what kids do now-a-days, right?) New maps and a greater variation in weaponry would be a welcome improvement. As it stands, Turned feels more like an after-thought.

Die Rise. Now, here, I could spend hours. This Zombie survival map set on a crumbling high rise in the far east adds some serious spice to the rather bland assortment of vanilla Zombie maps (non-DLC maps that came included with the game). There is a lot to discover here and a ton of path choices to consider. Communication and planning is key here, as it can be really easy to get separated and lost from your crew. The verticality and narrow pathways can sometimes make it impossible to link back up if you don’t know where your going or which corridor leads to where. Use the elevators wisely and keep an eye out for weapon and “trample-steam” parts.

A lone zombie roams the crumbling Die Rise

If Revolution is any indication of the type of content we’ll be receiving from Treyarch during Black Ops 2’s life time, you can take comfort in knowing the season pass may have been a good investment after all. Four new maps, a new weapon, a new zombie map and a new zombie mode is a lot to chew on for one piece of DLC. Of course, only time will actually tell if this sort of quality can be kept up. For now, I’m a happy camper. Well, not an actual camper. Camping is for noobs.

Black Ops 2 Revolution is currently available on the Xbox Live Marketplace and arriving on the PlayStation Network and PC February 28.

Destiny Not Included In 2013 Outlook, Confirms Activision

Bungie’s recently revealed decade-spanning IP Destiny will not ship this year, according to Activision.

Confirmed during Destiny’s reveal yesterday, Bungie’s “next-generation game engine” will allow the title to come to life on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 as well as “future console platforms.”

Initial details of the contract between Bungie and Activision suggested that Destiny would see a release in 2013 exclusively on the Xbox 360, while subsequent titles in the franchise would appear on both Microsoft’s and Sony’s future console platforms.

Yesterday’s reveal already threw a curveball by announcing the first Destiny title’s availability on the PlayStation 3, but according to Activision, not even the original release time frame will be upheld.

The company confirmed in a recent press release that they have “not included [Destiny’s] launch in its 2013 outlook and there should be no speculation or expectation of a different result.”

If the “future console platforms” are indeed meant to launch this upcoming holiday season, as rumors suggest, might we see a simultaneous release of the first Destiny title on both current and next-generation hardware? What do you think?

Halo 4: Forged from Scratch – Custom Maps & Gametypes Pt. 1

With the launch of Halo 4, 343i updated Forge Mode to help streamline the content creation process to make it as efficient as possible. Unfortunately, the online File Browser previously seen in both Halo 3 and Halo: Reach was not implemented for Halo 4. Since there is no longer a ‘central base’ for finding custom gametypes, maps, images, and videos, players have to resort to perusing YouTube, Halo fansites, and random forums in an attempt to find quality content. Until the File Browser makes its return (if ever), the goal of Forged From Scratch is to feature the most phenomenal content that we can round up for you to download and help keep the Halo 4 experience as fresh as possible.

Over the years, Halo’s Forge community has sharply refined their creative talents to a razor’s edge. Whether it’s the creation of imaginative new gametypes or reimplementing ones from past Halo titles, the Forge community continues to impress with each passing day. Now, with the 3rd generation of Forge Mode available, the Forge community has put the new tools to exceptional use and put out some of its best work yet.

This week, Forged from Scratch will focus on Custom Maps & Gametypes. All maps featured in this article are original creations and have an associated gametype that is either required or recommended for the map.

Skydock

Skydock

Created by: The Psycho Duck ( Map ), Flying Shoe ILR ( Gametype )

  • Gametype : One Flag CTF  ( Recommended )

  • Compatible with default Gametypes : Yes  ( All )

Skydock is a fairly small asymmetrical map with plenty of long walkways and great vantage points. Of all the maps I’ve played in Forge, Skydock seems to scale the best for matches 1v1 all the way through 6v6. Cover is a bit sparse as there are only a couple of areas where you have complete coverage. The best part about this is in the event you’re playing a small match (either 1v1 or 2v2), its fairly easy to figure out which spot the enemy is camping at so finding a firefight should never be an issue.

The map is very conducive for the jetpack, grenades, and hologram. Since the sight lines are so long, its easy to get caught out in the open with no cover within running distance. A jetpack can help remedy this as you can elevate to a higher level where there tends to be more crates and obstacles to find cover. If you are a self-proclaimed grenade enthusiast , you’ll appreciate the straight walkways and their close proximity to walls. In many areas of the map, these walls can serve as a ‘backboard’ of sorts (particularly if you are on the upper floors) dropping your grenade at an unsuspecting enemy’s feet. For those who want to make a ‘Hail Mary’ montage, this map is for you. Hologram’s are great on this map for drawing enemy grenades, sniper fire, and baiting your enemy into moving away from cover. With the shortage of areas with complete coverage, Promethean Vision isn’t really needed, but all other armor abilities can prove to be quite useful.

One interesting inclusion is the time-delayed spawn of the Banshee. It is the only vehicle on the map but it adds a very interesting twist to the match dynamics. The left half of the map is wide open allowing the Banshee to easily pluck enemies from a distance. However, should the firefight veer to the right half of the map, the Banshee will have to swoop in under the overhang in order to attack enemies. This close proximity to Spartans on the ground leaves the Banshee very prone to being hit with a charge shot from a plasma pistol. Should the Banshee be disabled over an area where there is nothing but sky underneath, the Banshee will tumble into an instant kill zone before the engine comes back on. Even if you don’t think you’d fly aggressively low to the ground, the small dimensions of the map don’t provide a lot of space to fly like in Ragnarok or Exile. As a result, focused DMR/BR fire quickly becomes an issue. Thus, piloting the Banshee carries a label of high risk/high reward.

Although Skydock is compatible with all gametypes, there is a classic custom game mode that also works with the map: One-flag CTF. For some reason unbeknownst to myself, 343i left out this classic mode not only in the playlists, but excluded it from custom games as well. This mode was a staple of past Halo titles and its exclusion is baffling. Thankfully, Flying Shoe ILR and The Psycho Duck have rectified the error of this exclusion and created the gametype using the Forge tools. Basically, two flags still spawn, but one of them is inaccessible. The round will end once the flag has been captured once or time has expired, and teams will switch sides per the classic rules. If you want to see how this is created for curiosity’s sake or adapt it to any retail or Forged map, check out the how-to video here.

The Psycho Duck has made a map that is quite versatile in handling games of all types and player counts. The frenetic pacing of matches, easy to learn map layout, and compatibility with all default gametypes makes Skydock an easy recommendation.

Nom Nom

Nom_Nom

Created by: AJ Yusi

  • Gametype : Yum Yum  ( Required )

  • Compatible with default Gametypes : No

Nom Nom is actually an adaption of a Forge creation from Halo: Reach. Besides having one of the weirdest greatest ridiculous most unique named Gametype/Map combos ever, Nom Nom offers up some very fun gameplay as well.

The object of the game is simple. Blue Team tries to reach ‘the mouth’ (pictured above) using Mongooses as many times as possible in 3 minutes. The only way to get there is a straight and narrow pathway through the center of the map connected from the Blue Team spawn to the mouth. Be careful as there are no railings on either side preventing you from falling off. Should a player make it all the way across without driving off or being killed by the Red Team, Blue Team earns a point. Once a player scores, he/she is teleported back to Blue Team spawn. However, arriving unscathed will be no easy task.

Red Team will be up on two rafters which extend the length of the level and flank left and right of the narrow pathway. The Red Team will be armed with plasma grenades which have multiple respawn points every 5 seconds (so you’ll never run low) as well as access to a couple Sticky Detonators. As the Red Team, you can’t jump at all which relegates players to the rafters only. Don’t worry about Blue Team Mongooses outpacing you. As a member of the Red Team, your movement speed is increased significantly in order to keep up with the Mongooses. There are various teleporters that allow Red Team to travel to either rafter should you wish to try your attack from a new angle or you’re just looking for more grenades to pick up.

With the height of the rafters, both the plasma grenades and the Sticky Detonator grenades do take a while to travel down to the pathway. Timing is important in order to get a sticky kill. However, the blast radius of the explosion is sometimes enough to knock a Mongoose off the left or right ledge of the pathway. It’s interesting to note that since the rafters are so high, the plasma grenades bounce more like frag grenades rather than plasma grenades. So why is this interesting? It makes getting a kill about timing the throw of your grenade rather than aiming your grenade. Since the grenades will bounce forward, they have a chance of getting the kill even if the trajectory was a little short. Not only does it make aiming grenades a little less significant, but the grenades almost never bounce too far as to fall off the pathway, which results in more kills and less misses. I’m not sure if A J Yusi did that intentionally, but it definitely makes playing as Red Team a lot more enjoyable. Don’t be dismayed if you aren’t killing a lot of enemies with plasma grenades. My personal best in a round is 6 kills (not including Sticky Detonator kills, which are a lot easier to get).

Overall, AJ Yusi has made Nom Nom a very fun and unique diversion from the standard Halo gametypes. I can attest that being a grenade whore has never been so much fun.

(If you want to have some additional fun, might I suggest trying to reach ‘the mouth’ while driving the mongoose in reverse?)

Smashy Chase

Smashy_Chase_VOP_3

Created by: TEETMARE

  • Gametype : Smashy Chase

  • Compatible with default Gametypes : No

Somehow, someway, someone has figured out how to incorporate gameplay mechanics from Super Smash Bros. into Halo 4. That someone is TEETMARE and his gametype, Smashy Chase, immediately conjures up memories of doing everything in your power to knock your buddies off the stage.

Functioning as a ‘Flood’ gametype, one team spawns as ‘Humans’ and has access to indestructible Rocket Warthogs and Mongooses (think Halo 1 vehicle rules). The other team spawns as the ‘Flood’ (though you’ll appear as Spartans) who have highly increased movement speed and access to infinitely charged  Gravity Hammers. While riding in vehicles, the ‘Humans’ cannot be damaged by the ‘Flood’, but the Gravity Hammers can force vehicles to flip over. Should the vehicles be flipped, and the ‘Humans’ are ejected from the vehicles, they can be taken out with one swing. This isn’t the only way for the ‘Humans’ to meet their demise. Vehicles can also be knocked off the map at the edges of the level in addition to the gaps in the center of the stage. ‘Humans’ can kill the ‘Flood’, but aim carefully as rockets aimed too low can cause your own Warthog to flip. Being the driver can actually be a lot of fun as you can not only splatter enemy ‘Flood’, but also drive on a multitude of trick ramps and air lifts as well.

TEETMARE made 3 custom stages that are all unique to the Smashy Chase gametype. Should you get bored of this one made on Ravine, he has a stage made on Erosion as well as Impact. For those who are DWG (Drinking While Gaming) and still would like to win a round or two, you may want to designate a driver before playing Smashy Chase.

Black Ops 2 “Orientation” Map Pack Is Fake

Yesterday, an alleged Black Ops 2 DLC poster suggested the game’s next map pack would be called “Orientation.”

The image also suggested the map pack would contain four new multiplayer maps (Water, Mobile, Southpaw and Plane), a new zombie map called Dead High, and another new DLC weapon. It’s legitimacy, however, has been unconfirmed up until now.

Thanks to MP1st community member MasonMei (originally discovered by “Wolf”), we’ve learned that many of the images used in this poster are, in fact, ripped directly from the promotional material of Call of Duty Online, a free-to-play version of Call of Duty aimed at the Chinese audience.

Compare the “leaked” poster below to the Call of Duty Online images underneath. You’ll see that all four soldiers in the “Orientation” poster are simply reversed images of the soldiers used in the Call of Duty Online wallpapers.

See the similarities? Needless to say, this proves the “Orientation” DLC poster to be fake. Nice try!

DayZ Standalone Development Focuses on Character Customization, Large-Scale Testing Next Week

DayZ creator Dean “Rocket” Hall updates the zombie-loving community with some of the progress being made on the standalone version of the popular Arma 2 mod.

According to his blog, internal testing is going well and the team hopes to begin their “first large-scale capacity testing next week,” provided they have a stable enough build. Testing will range from 50 to 150 people on a server.

The team has also “been experimenting with some novel approaches [to loot] such as not having loot spawned at the server level, but having it spawned at the database level – therefore negating the ease with which loot tables could be produced and allowing us to conduct a form of economic regulation to item spawns dynamically.”

Along with these architectural developments, character design has become “the absolute core of [their] current design efforts. As demonstrated in the gallery at the bottom of this post, you’ll see a few new ethnic heads available for female characters. Hall also comments, “we want to allow characters to be fully customized and reflect the players story as they are going along. This has included some fantastic ideas inspired by the community. Until initial release, the vast majority of our efforts will be with expanding options for developing and customizing your character.”

This applies to inventory as well: “…we want to allow maximum ability for the customization and development of a players weapons. As part of this, all weapons being introduced into DayZ are being redeveloped from scratch at extremely high detail. The work being produced so far is outstanding! This means that, on release, there will be less weapons in the standalone – but it allows us the ability to continue each week to release content updates with new weapons and items.” So, expect continuous updates with regards to weapons and equipment.

World development is back in full swing as developer Ivan Buchta has returned to the studio. You can check out some of his new work in the gallery below as well.

Destiny – Bungie Wants Everyone To Be Able to Play It

Bungie wants their new IP Destiny to appeal to everyone – people of all ages and all skill levels.

Speaking to Shack News, Bungie’s Jason Jones said, “If you have the basic coordination to play a shooter, you can experience all Destiny has to offer.”

“All core activities can be able to be enjoyed by a novice player, even as we we get into those complex six-player activities, like raids.”

Jones added that Bungie wants “everybody that wants to play to be able to play Destiny.” Not everyone is able to invest the sort of time any energy many hardcore gamers can afford to put into titles like these. He admits that a lof of gamers “don’t want to work hard, they don’t want to read, they don’t want to go on the internet to figure out our bullshit”.

“They want to be entertained, they want to become heroes, they want to feel things they don’t feel in their everyday lives. So our core experience has to be delivered as simply and directly as possible.”

While keeping things inviting for the more casual player, Bungie does have plans to keep the more advanced player hooked. The team knows striking a balance between the two demographics can be a challenge, but Jones said, “We’re going to succeed, because we’re advanced players. We play our own game all the time. We’d go crazy if it was anything less than fun.”

Do you think Bungie is taking the noble route here, or might they stumble trying to cater to a wider audience?

Destiny was revealed earlier today as an always online, first-person “shared world shooter” available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and future-generation hardware. Learn more about Destiny and check out some of the first gameplay footage here.

Thanks, VG247.

[Updated] Black Ops 2 DLC Rumors – Orientation Map Pack

Update

The alleged Black Ops 2 “Orientation” map pack poster has been confirmed to be fake. Read more here.

Original Story

A new Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 image suggest the title’s next DLC will be called “Orientation.”

Found by simply googling the map pack’s name, the image suggest that the DLC will feature four new multiplayer maps, one new zombie map and an additional weapon, as did Black Ops 2’s first DLC, Revolution.

Multiplayer Maps

  • Water
  • Mobile
  • Southpaw
  • Plane

Zombie Map

  • Dead High

New Weapon

  • ?

2d401077740ffce44b07c0beaea32613

The image cuts off the name of the new weapon, though it looks like it could possibly be a semi-automatic marksman rifle of some sort.

Currently, there is no telling whether this image is fake or real. It looks similar in style to the Revolution DLC’s promotional material but it seems unlikely that a poster of Black Ops 2’s next DLC would surface so soon. Of course, we’ll be sure to update should more details appear or should its legitimacy become certain.

PlayStation 3 and PC users are still awaiting the Black Ops 2 Revulution DLC to hit their respective platforms this February 28.

What do you guys think? Let’s hear it in the comments below.

Bungie’s Destiny Revealed

Bungie’s Destiny is, at last, revealed.

In this vidoc below, Bungie talks about their brand new massive universe, Destiny, and even shows off some of the first gameplay footage ever.

Enjoy and make sure to read on to learn more about Destiny.

Destiny ViDoc

[youtube id=”xkkdn22DRPg” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Destiny is a first-person “shared world shooter,” similar to a massive multiplayer online shooter. It will constantly require an internet connection, but no paid subscription will be required.

Destiny will be primarily a console shooter, available only on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, later on “future generation technology.” A release date has yet to be announced.

You’ll be able to play Destiny like an MMO, either completely solo, or with friends in small co-op groups. Friends can drop in and out seamlessly, similar to games like Borderlands 2 with a mix of Borderlands to and, of course, Halo. Multiplayer is opt-in, meaning that you’ll have to volunteer to play online with others. “Lobbies” will not play a part in matchmaking, but there will certainly be more to come in regards to multiplayer.

Players will play as a generic hero called a Guardian but will be able to choose one of three classes available: the Titan (weapon-focused), the Hunter (stealth-focused) and the Warlock (magic-focused). Magic does play a part in the gameplay as it is tied to the story. Players “borrow” abilities from the mysterious “Traveler,” a gigantic alien space ship hovering over the last city on Earth, presumably protecting it from mysterious alien invaders.

Weapon and gear customization will also play a large role in Destiny’s gameplay, as will vehicles. Players will be able to travel between every planet in our solar system via space travel; however, it is unsure whether space flight will be an actual gameplay element.

According to the vidoc above, it appears that there will be a social companion tool, available on iOS devices, that will launch with Destiny.

Destiny can now be pre-ordered for either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 through Amazon for a Destiny Star Map digital wallpaper, or through GameStop for a sweet double-sided poster.

Battlefield 3: End Game Developer Interview, Air Superiority to Support 24 Jets At Once

DICE producer Craig McLeod and game designer Gustav Halling walk Battlefield 3 fans through some key aspects of End Game, Battlefield 3’s final expansion pack due out this March.

Speaking to Battlefield TV in a video interview (below), McLeod and Halling detail the two new game modes being brought to the battlefield: Capture the Flag and Air Superiority.

A key take-away from this portion of the interview is that Air Superiority will support up to 24 jets in the air at the same time, 12 on each side. In order to win a match of Air Superiority, your team will need to have a higher presence of jet fighters within the vicinity of three different capture points, depicted by three different airships.

Like Armored Kill, vehicles will play a large role in End Game’s gameplay. Three new vehicles are being introduced: the motor bike, new AA vehicles, and the drop ship. Halling mentions that the motor bikes mimic real physics, including leans and quick stops by sliding. The two new anti-air vehicles are based on the Vodnik and Humvee from the original game, but with AA weaponry attached to the roof of each. Of course, the drop ship will allow the controlling team to deploy troops and additional vehicles on to the battlefield.

Check out the full interview with Battlefield TV below (1:07 – 3:50).

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any reports on Uncharted 3’s multiplayer; we thought that we would get back on it by notifying you all that Naughty Dog will be hosting a double XP event this weekend (2/15 – 2/17). For those who haven’t reached the highest rank yet, now is your chance to do it.

Along with this news, the message of the day that’s displayed in Uncharted 3 has come out to confirm that Patch 1.17 is due later this month. Besides adding Labs that can be viewed per week available, nothing else is known about the patch.

Also, the big news that Naughty Dog has said that they would reveal has been delayed, sadly. However, it will be shown off later this month.

PlayStation 4 Reported To Stream PlayStation 3 Games, Latest Controller Specs

This Wednesday, February 20, Sony will be holding a special press event in order to make an important announcement, expectedly revealing the successor to the PlayStation 3.

The “PlayStation 4” is coming and the internet is riddled with rumors and speculation. Recently, we reported the possibility of Killzone 4 being a launch title for the PS4. We also rounded up the latest rumored specs of the next-gen hardware. Two more recent developments, however, concern the actual PS4 controller, as well as the PS4’s ability to stream older titles.

The PlayStation 4 Will Stream PlayStation 3 Games

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the PlayStation 4 will stream PlayStation 3 games.

Sonly will allegedly use Gakai’s streaming service, a company Sony purchased last June, to stream PlayStation 3 games, rather than building the hardware necessary to make the PS4 backwards compatible with PS3 games. Because the PS4 is expected to use AMD x86 chips, the hardware would not be compatible with the architecture used in previous PlayStation systems. Using Gakai’s streaming service would prove to be a cost-effective way to allow users to continue playing PS3 games, though it may not be ideal for actual PS4 games which are still expected to ship on optical discs.

The PlayStation 4 Controller

These images of a the rumored PlayStation 4 controller were recently sent to Destructoid and have been confirmed by numerous sources to be real. EuroGamer reported, via Digital Foundry, the following:

  • Part of a complete Orbis dev kit (50GB Blu-ray Dive with 2 USB 3.0 ports.)
  • Very recent. Not an early prototype.
  • “L” and “R” buttons are set lower than the DualShock 3.
  • New D-pad and analog sticks.
  • Analog sticks are now concave, matching the Xbox 360’s analog sticks.
  • The blue light is reported to be an inticator for PlayStation Move, now integrated into the pad, tracked by two cameras.
  • The controller will feature a two-point touch screen but with no PS Vita-style touch screen on the back.
  • Headphone socket at the bottom. Party chat and cross-game chat now a possibility. May ship with a wired mic and headset.
  • Integrated Speaker.

Takedown: Red Sabre – Serellan Partners With 505 Games For a Global Release

Serellan founder and former Ghost Recon creative director Christian Allen has announced today that the team’s successfully funded Kickstarter project, now named Takedown: Red Sabre, will be published by 505 Games in order to provide a global release for the title.

The project recently surpassed $200,000 in funds, at which point the original name of Takedown was changed to Takedown: Red Sabre, a shooter based on realism and tactical gameplay in the style of older Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon titles.

Takedown: Red Sabre is a community project, one of the latest to be born out of Kickstarter, and the team at Serellan have already garnered a significant following,” said Head of Global Brand for 505 Games Tim Woodley. “Our role in this partnership is to preserve and encourage the team’s direct dialogue with the community while ensuring we leverage our global presence to grow the audience, amplify the buzz and maximise the potential we and the community of early evangelists believe that Takedown: Red Sabre has.”

Christian Allen commented, “We are extremely pleased to be able to let our Kickstarter community know that their early faith in the Takedown dream will be rewarded with a global campaign from a committed partner who consistently launches successful global campaigns from IL-2: Sturmovik to Sniper Elite V2.”

Our last peak at Takedown: Red Sabre came in the form of a batch of images of the game in development. You can view them for yourself right here.

You can also check out Christian Allen’s original pitch for the title right here.

Takedown: Red Sabre will be released on multiple platforms this year, 2013.

Battlefield 3: End Game – All Maps Detailed With High-Res Images

At last, DICE reveals all four Battlefield 3: End Game maps in all their Frostbite 2 glory.

In End Game, DICE will be introducing four brand new maps, each based on a different season and roughly sized similar to Caspian Border and Operation Firestorm from the original game. The flag layouts, however, will resemble that in the previously released expansion Armored Kill. That means players should get to experience the entirety of each map when going for those flag captures.

All four maps, Operation Riverside, Nebandan Flats, Kiasar Railroad and Sabalan Pipeline, are also carefully designed for both the new dirt bike and the new AA vehicles.

Each of the new maps will support the two new game modes being introduced in Battlefield 3 with End Game: Capture the Flag and Air Superiority.

On the Battlefield Blog, DICE has provided images, descriptions and overviews of each new map which you can view below. Enjoy and let us know which one has you excited the most in the comments below!

Click on each image for a high-res version.

Operation Riverside

End_Game_Operation_Riverside_Water2

Internal working title

“XP5_001” or River”

Supported game modes

Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch

Distinguishing features

“This fall themed map houses an electric power substation at its center, with a small river flowing along its axis. The layout of the bases in Operation Riverside caters somewhat towards infantry action rather than all-out vehicle warfare. It’s generally speaking an infantry-friendly landscape where soldiers can go by foot between the bases, while ground vehicles need to take more roundabout roads to traverse the environment.”

Across the river giving this map its name, players can find a spectacular jump in the form of a partly destroyed wooden bridge. A lot of other ramps have been carefully placed in the environment on Operation Riverside to make sure that the map is full of exciting options for riders of the new dirt bike.”

Nebandan Flats

End_Game_Nebandan_Flats_Water

Internal working title

“XP5_002” or “Flats”

Supported game modes

Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch

Distinguishing features

“In this arid desert dotted with gigantic wind generators lies a seemingly non-distinguishing warehouse. But behind its unassuming exterior hides a secret weapons and munitions depot, leading to a clash in the area. The relative openness of the desert setting allows for full freedom of movement for the entire range of vehicles at disposal in Battlefield 3 multiplayer. The low amount of natural cover available also demands quick transportation between capture points, as players are otherwise open to attack.”

Kiasar Railroad

End_Game_Kiasar_Railroad_Water

Internal working title

“XP5_003” or “Railroad”

Supported game modes

Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch

Distinguishing features

“This picturesque summer logging industry setting sees a strategic railway stretch across the map – with covert weapons deliveries being its main purpose. The many height changes in this undulating landscape can be used to your advantage – There’s plenty of opportunity to hide from the enemy and use cover as you approach your targets.”

While this map also has ample opportunity for dirt bike riders to catch big air, the jumps on Kiasar Railroad are typically more carefully molded into the landscape itself, or not as obvious.”

Sabalan Pipeline

End_Game_Sabalan_Pipeline_Water

Internal working title

“XP5_004” or “Pipeline”

Supported game modes

Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch

Distinguishing features

“Ever since we demoed the Alborz Mountain map at GamesCom 2012 and saw the amazing fan reactions, we’ve known that snow is one of the most stunning settings we can provide in Battlefield 3. Sabalan Pipeline is no different. The oil pipeline traversing this frosty winter landscape has immense economic value and is a highly contested battlefield.”

Similar to Operation Riverside, Sabalan Pipeline was built to cater for a mix of vehicle and infantry gameplay. Compared to the other three maps in End Game, Sabalan Pipeline has fewer and narrower roads that are important to control if you want to dominate the opposition. At the center of this map lies a central base that is also an essential asset, as it allows you extended control over the road leading to and from your main bases.  This is equally important whether playing the signature Battlefield Conquest mode or our take on Capture the Flag that we are introducing in End Game.”

Thanks DeLuca FTW, for the tip!

Battlefield 3: End Game – Capture the Flag Is Fast and Furious

As many of you already know, DICE will be re-introducing Capture the Flag, a classic game mode once featured in Battlefield: 1942, and will be translating it over to Battlefield 3 via the latest expansion, End Game.

In a recent developer blog, DICE detailed exactly how this iteration of CTF will work. One of the biggest differences from other games that becomes apparent right away is the inclusion of the new motor-bike vehicle. Obviously, the motor-bike will bring a different dynamic to the gameplay, giving players a choice between a fast but lightly armored getaway versus a slower but more heavily armored getaway.

The concept is fairly simple: capture the enemy flag and bring it back to your base. But players need to remember that the enemy is trying to do the same. If your flag is no longer at your base when trying to return the enemy flag, you’re not allowed to score.

DICE explains that “Capturing a flag is instantaneous. Just run over it to snatch it, then make it back home to score. Recovering your own flag that an enemy has dropped is not so simple, though. Rather, it is similar to how you would capture a base in Conquest. There’s a timer ticking down once you are within capture radius, and the time it takes to recover the flag is directly affected by how many friendly soldiers you have in the flag’s capture radius. Once it’s recovered, it will be automatically placed back home in your base again.”

Once you’ve captured the enemy flag, it’s carried on the back of your infantry soldier or attached to your vehicle,” as demonstrated by this guy below:

BF3
“This is how we do it in America.”

Are you excited to try your hand at the Battlefield 3 version of Capture the Flag?

Battlefield 3: End Game drops this March, two weeks early for Battlefield 3 Premium members and first for PlayStation 3 users.

Crysis 3 – Lethal Weapons Gameplay Trailer

Crysis 3 is just around the corner, so it’s time to get familiar with the killing tools you’ll be using to take on an alien invasion.

Crytek has released a brand new trailer for Crysis 3, launching this February 19 on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, showing off some crazy weaponry involved with this title, both human and alien.

The Predator bow makes its debut in Crysis 3, including four different bolt types for the different situations you’ll find yourself in on the battlefield. Meanwhile, the trusty SCAR returns in a slightly modified form with its many attachment options. This familiar weapon has been a reliable, go-to workhorse throughout previous Crysis titls as well. Specializing in quickly shredding through the Ceph aliens, the new, highly advanced Typhoon, firing at 500 per second, does a good job of cleaning up house. It even had its own episode of The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 dedicated to it.

Some of the new alien weaponry include the Incinerator and the Reaper Cannon. Sounds pretty scary. But don’t take my word for it. Check out the video for yourself.

[youtube id=”PwrluMgmQJI” width=”618″ height=”378″]

There may be plenty of ways to kill in Crysis 3 when it comes to weaponry, but let’s be honest. Nothing beats tossing a deadly red barrel at your foe, killim them instantly, sometimes sending them flying. (Anyone remember that Crysis 2 achievement/trophy?)

Aliens: Colonial Marines Review

DLC

Patch Notes

Review

Like many, I too was a fan of the original Alien films while growing up. The dark and twisted sci-fi horror feeling that the film produced went on to inspire many top hitter titles today such as the Dead Space and Halo franchises. It’s not new to the industry to see a game based on Aliens; after all, we have had over twenty of them since the films first started. After countless letdowns, hearing that the developers behind the highly acclaimed series “Borderlands” would be taking charge of the Aliens project ignited a new flame of hope for fans. Sadly that flame nearly died the moment I started playing.

I’ll start with the multiplayer segment of the title. In multiplayer, there are two teams: The Marines (Humans) and the Xeno’s (The Aliens). As such, they both have their own leveling up system as well as unlocks and every match has two sets of rounds where you play as both. This is a pretty unique and clever way of doing it as each round will tally up the scores. So, say Marines got 40 kills and Xenos got 12, that round goes to Marines. In the next round (swap round), if Marines were to, say, get 50 kills and Xenos got 11, then the Marines (now Xenos) win because their overall score would be higher.

Playing as a Marine, I wasn’t expecting it to feel so bland. All the guns feel “nerfed,” meaning there is barely any recoil or feedback from them whatsoever. Walking feels extremely sluggish in a game that requires fast reactions. It’s not common for someone to randomly spawn with no weapon or clip through the floor for god knows what reason. As mentioned, you earn levels and with each level you get an unlock point. These points can be used unlock new attachments for weapons and support perks. It’s a nice touch, but honestly, the menu’s for the Marines load-outs are so unattractive compared to the simplicity of the Xenos, it’s an immediate turn off from even bothering with weapon modding.

Could have been a great survival title.

Could have been a great survival title.

This is the first Alien title to actually feature classes and perks for Xenos, which is a great addition. However, it goes without saying that the controls for them are just as bad as the Marines. Climbing up walls, at times, becomes discouraging, even though they opted for third-person view to help cope with motion sickness from past titles. Often times, you’ll find yourself clipping onto other walls, pulling random reverse maneuvers, or even magically popping out in midair and getting stuck in place until you release the climb trigger. The camera is just a mess with it randomly going berserk often. Unlocks for the Xenos are, of course, better than the ones offered for Marines. One of the pluses found in the multiplayer: The Xenos’ unlocks range from changing their types of strikes all the way down to the type of fatality kill that they can perform. While at the start of a multiplayer campaign one would find that using the Xeno soldier was better, after progressing through and unlocking multiple unlocks, other classes like the Spitter become more ideal with its ability to stun spit followed by an almost immediate heavy death strike. The perk system on the Xenos side allows more robust combos to be performed, which is something that I found extremely enjoyable. There are also two special classes on each map (one at a time) for the Xenos. The Boiler is a fast paced Xeno whose only purpose is to die and take out as many Marines as possible. Upon combat, the Boiler will explode and spew acid on nearby enemies. The Crusher is literally a moving tank. It has an extremely high health capacity and a few attacks that are normally one hit kills. I can’t say that there is much to be enjoyed with the Xeno’s though, considering the problematic controls.

I want to get this out of my head with people complaining about Marines being overpowered or Xenos being overpowered: They aren’t at all. This review is coming off very negatively towards the game because most of it is negative. However, I did say that the flame was nearly extinguished in the intro of the review, meaning that there was something that kept me playing. The reason why Xenos or Marines feel overpowered is because most people out there rush in alone to take on groups of enemies or enemies who already know your location. Playing this game alone is a disaster, but playing with friends who are also fans of the film and know exactly how to play is where the joy of the multiplayer comes from. If you’re playing as Xenos, always stick together and attack to weaken an enemy. Don’t just rush in alone and get torn to shreds by bullets. On the Marines side, you always want to stick together and go defense while going offense only against single opponents. It’s a great feeling when it’s all done right, which is probably the main reason why I’m still playing. With that in mind, there is still some hope for Gearbox to patch the crap out of this game.

Game Modes

The match-making in the game definitely needs work. Finding other players can be a hit and miss, either because the game sold so poorly or it’s just that bad. When in the lobby, the game has a chance to actually freeze up if you attempt to edit load-outs or even leave the game. It’s not really “frozen” like most games since you can still see the dynamic background moving, but all action buttons are rendered irresponsive. Anyway, here’s a brief explanation of the available game modes.

Team-death match

This is your multiplayer norm. No need for much of an explanation. Two teams fight for the most kills.

Extermination

In this mode, Marines work their way to nest beacons so that they may be captured. The job of the Xenos is to stop the Marines at all costs from destroying the eggs. There are two points at a time, and once one is captured, another one appears.

Survivor

This mode and Escape are pretty much the same. In Survivor, it’s the goal of the Marines to survive until the timer runs out, and the Xenos have to hunt each Marine down. Unlike in TDM, Marines are equipped from the start with an auto-turret and a full set of body armor, making it difficult for the Xenos to kill them. The main strategy here is if there are hoards of enemies, weaken them. If one Marine is red and the rest are still yellow, never ever go after him unless you’re in a pack that’ll kill him before the Marines can revive him, otherwise it would be pointless.

Escape

Exactly like Survivor, except Marines are given objectives rather than a timer limit. On the top of the score, you’ll be able to see the Marines progress through a level. The objectives include finding ammo stashes, opening doors, and defending points. This mode requires absolute teamwork because every time a Marine reaches a checkpoint, their health is replenished, making it more difficult for the Xenos to win.

Co-op

Like Borderlands 1 and 2, ACM features a campaign that can be played with up to three other players (4 player co-op). One would expect this to be the top feature of the title, considering Gearbox’s previous experience. That is, sadly, completely not the case. Saying that it’s utter trash would be going lightly. The story, which was meant to clear up those pesky Alien 3 questions, left a lot more to be desired. A buddy and I finished the whole campaign on Ultimate Badass (hardest difficulty) in less than 7 hours. To give a brief experience, here’s an image of me chasing the Queen Xeno, though she was gone on my partners screen.

Ugh, what is this, I don't even.

Ugh. What is this? I don’t even…

This pretty much sums up my whole experience for the campaign: Buggy. Absolutely buggy. Xenos drop frame-rates, there are screen tears all over the place, and the friendly firing does not help in a game that net code is seemingly broken. It’s known that Aliens throw players into tight little spaces, but we were just a group of two and multiple times, we shot each other down without even looking one another. It’s hard to imagine what this would be like with 4-players battling it out for what little space is available. And when there is enough space to walk, such as outside, the space feels wasted with a lack of any objects, hidden items or special Easter eggs. It sounds like a strange complaint, but it’s so open at times that you would expect more than just a few random crates sitting around. And remember when games had loading screens? Well, ACM only has it when you open doors, but they might as well just say the game is loading when you’re opening them. We’ll sit there and wait for nearly 30 seconds or more at a time when we encounter sealed doors. It’s a terrible annoyance, along with clipped Xenos, random teleporting, and just an overall badly written script.

Bishop: Le plot twist sucks, it can't possibly get any worse..

Bishop: Le plot twist sucks, it can’t possibly get any worse…

Story-wise, the plot “twist” is an absolute insult to all Alien fans out there. Nonetheless, it’s recommended not to play alone as you’ll most likely suffer from aneurysm due to the crap plot. Oh, and don’t be afraid to play on Ultimate Badass mode, because it’s 7 hours, tops, and extremely easy.

The only good thing about the co-op is the legendary weapon placed in each level. Collecting dog tags is also fun since you’re seeing some classic movie marines’ name, but the audio logs add absolutely nothing to the story more than what we already know.

I wasn’t expecting the graphics to be a huge reason to buy Colonial Marines, but my god, they are absolutely terrible. Playing ACM in 2013 sends us back in time to the early 2005-2006 titles that released on Xbox and the PS2. I’ll admit the lighting is pretty good, which was a crucial part of the films. However, often times, you’ll be struck with screen tears, unfinished textures or slow loading ones, or other graphical issues. There was one part in the campaign (Raven) where you sneak through the sewers without a gun. It was probably the best part of the game seeing that it truly felt like something from an Alien(s) movie with its dark atmosphere and flickering lights.

However, for most of the parts in Co-op, you’re facing very linear level design. As for the multiplayer, the maps themselves aren’t that bad, if it weren’t for the broken controls and bugs. For both Xenos and Marines, there are varieties of locations on each map that can be used as defensive outpost or paths for stealth attacks. Xenos can crawl through ventilation shafts for quick shortcuts to confuse the Marines, but for the most part, you’ll be battling with bad texture pop-ins and horrible lighting drop-ins and -outs instead.

Environment could have looked better weren't for some muddy and overused textures. The character models though are extremely lifeless.

Environment could have looked better if it weren’t for some muddy and overused textures. The character models are extremely lifeless.

One thing I do like about the visuals, though, are the characters’ appearances. I like that we can edit what type of gear is present on our Marines, but with the Xenos, it’s pretty cool to see the different skins and head models in the appearance menu. They are so highly detailed that it makes me wonder why the whole game couldn’t match it. There is a disappointment of no 3rd-person view – just the frontal portions. The sound is spot on, however, as they perfectly mimic the same sounds from the movies. The pulse rifle sounds like the pulse rifle, the motion tracker pings when an Xeno is near, and the screams of the Xenos sound great.

Score: 1 / 5

From a studio that won our Game of The Year Award (MPE2012), we expected much more from Gearbox. It’s such a shame that we won’t be getting the Aliens title we longed for. In a year where both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are nearing their deaths, one has to wonder why Gearbox bothered with releasing Colonial Marines in its current state. This is perhaps one of the most unpolished pieces of Xenomorph turd I have ever played, right up there with Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens Resurrection. If, for some reason, you still want to get this game, wait until it goes into the bargain bin, which shouldn’t be too long. Or, buy it on PC considering that the mod community will most likely end up fixing it. I don’t know if I would rather be dipped in a pool of Acid or be flown out to LV-426, but any of those two fates are better than playing this hot trash. This is a title that I can only recommend to the extremely hardcore Aliens fan; though, prepare to be deeply disappointed. The promises that Gearbox has told their fans but failed to deliver on is unforgiving. General consumers, stay away.

We are still making final tweaks to these settings – they may launch with the playlist on Monday, or may be released in a future update.”

Speaking of updates, title update 2 is on its way and is “expected to release within the next two weeks,” writes 343i community manager Jessica Shea. Full update notes will be released after launch, but here are a few of the key points.

  • Reduced the range of the Boltshot’s damage scaling over distance. The previous effective range for 1-hit kills was 20′-25′. The range has been reduced to 15′.
  • Fixed an issue that did not allow players to create respawn timers or disable instant respawn in custom games.
  • Fixed issues with friendly fire against vehicles. If FF is disabled, damage / EMPs from friendly sources will no longer damage vehicles that are fully controlled by your team.

Keep your sights on MP1st for the full details on title update 2 when it goes live.
