MP Games You Might Have Missed – Special Forces: Team X

If their glowing success with Blacklight: Retribution is any indication of something, it’s that Zombie Studios knows how to make good games.  Special Forces: Team X (STX) is no exception to that.

[youtube id=”z-UYCtiJJlo” width=”618″ height=”378″]

When I complimented Jared Gerritzen (Studio Head/Creative Director at Zombie Studios) latest effort in STX, he had this to say:

2b6d7f9e8686956e960af149129d8eca

FINALLY!  A developer that knows better than to fight for my attention by making “bigger” and “better” games than everyone else and making games that are actually just plain fun.  Don’t worry, STX is no goofball of a half-baked game, it’s well done, solid overall, and is easily worth the $15 cost of pickup.

While STX might not be the next COD, it’s not the next Brink either.  STX caters to people that like online shooters, but don’t like the stress of worrying about killstreaks or stats.  It’s a plain, simple, and fun shooter that’s easy to pick up but hard to put down, especially when playing with friends.

If you’ve hit the mid-season boredom stage of the most recent fall shooter market or are just looking for a good time, buy STX.  You might not walk away with a lifetime of memories, but it’s solid gameplay and interesting take on map design will keep you coming back for more, even after some “other” game’s DLC drops, which will probably cost as much as STX does anyway.

Nexuiz’s Future Uncertain After THQ Bankruptcy

Illfonic, developers of Nexuiz, an arena-based shooter powered by the CryENGINE 3 available on XBL and Steam, are uncertain of the game’s future after a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge approved the sale of THQ’s assets last month.

Illfonic president Chuck Brungardt recently told Polygon, “Our deal with THQ was basically a licensing deal through THQ Partners, so we do have a period of time [in which] THQ has the rights to be the exclusive publisher. Now with them folding we are still trying to figure out what this means and awaiting details from our contacts handling the transitions at THQ.”

Currently, Nexuiz remains an unsold asset along with others like THQ Partners, Darksiders developer Vigil Games and other remaining intellectual properties which are valued at $29 million.

We praised Nexuiz for its fast-paced yet fun and care-free nature and still consider it a highly recommended multiplayer title for anyone interested in the arena-based shooter genre. You can check out our full review here.

Diablo III Patch 1.0.7 Now Live in The Americas, Introduces PvP Brawling

Player-versus-player is, at last, introduced to Diablo III via patch 1.0.7, now live in the Americas.

Once available in your region, you will be prompted to download the new patch upon booting up your copy of Diablo III. Those in the American Region will be unable to log into European or Asian servers using Global Play until the same patch has been applied to those servers as well.

While there are many welcome fixes and tweaks found in patch 1.0.7, all of which you can find in the full patch notes below, the most notable addition is the inclusion of Brawling, a brand new PvP game mode that pits 2-4 characters in a free-for-all brawl to the death. Players will be able to enter a new zone called “The Scorched Chapel” where the entirety of your Brawling experience will take place. It can be accessed by speaking with Nek the Brawler who can be found in any of the four Act hubs.

Check out the full details below:

Brawling

General

  • Brawls can be initiated by speaking with Nek the Brawler, a new NPC located in each Act hub
    • Speaking with Nek will transport you and your party to the Scorched Chapel, a new zone featuring four different areas: the church, the graveyard, the river, and the lake
    • The Scorched Chapel currently supports up to four players in a Free-For-All format, which means you can battle your friends either one-on-one, three-player FFA, or full four-player FFA
    • Death is not permanent in the brawling world (not even for Hardcore characters) nor will players take any durability damage from PvP combat
    • To leave the Scorched Chapel, players can take the exit portal or use their Town Portal ability
  • Demon Hunters, Witch Doctors, and Wizards receive a 30% damage reduction while in the Scorched Chapel
  • Barbarians and Monks receive an additional 5% damage reduction (in addition to the 30% they inherently receive, for a total of 35%) while in the Scorched Chapel

Full 1.0.7 patch notes here

Check it out and let us know what you think of the new Brawling feature!

Halo 2 PC Multiplayer Support Extended to June, “Further Support Options” a Possibility

Despite earlier announcements made by 343 Industries community manager Jessica Shea that Halo 2 multiplayer support on the PC would be dropped by mid-February, it looks like fans will be able to hold on for at least a little while longer, maybe even more.

Designer David Ellis recently announced that Halo 2 multiplayer support on the PC will be extended to June while also hinting that the team was possibly looking into “further support options.”

“Halo 2 PC support extended through June 2013 while we investigate further support options,” Ellis stated on Twitter.

No reasoning for the sudden change of plans was communicated, but hey, whatever, right? Halo 2 fans on the PC – all 20 of you – can now look forward to fragging your way into the Summer, maybe even longer.

Thanks, CVG.

EA Says Medal of Honor Will Return Once They “Get the Leadership Aligned”

EA has followed up on earlier statements regarding the Medal of Honor franchise being pulled from the company’s yearly rotation of shooters, saying it wil return once they “get the leadership aligned.”

Speaking to RPS during the recent DICE conferences, EA chief creative director Rich Hilleman admits, “We don’t think its a genre problem. It’s an execution problem.” He added, “We don’t think Medal of Honor’s performance speaks to any particular bias in that space against modern settings or World War II or any of that. It’s much more that we had some things we should’ve done better.”

What we think right now is that, for the next couple years, we can just have one great thing in that space. So we’re choosing for it to be Battlefield.”

Hilleman also explained how EA plans to be more careful with IP’s like Medal of Honor and that caution must be taken in order to not “kill those products by trying to do them when we can’t do them well.”

He elaborated, saying “I think a key part of this is having the right amount of high-quality production talent, and we didn’t have the quality of leadership we needed to make [Medal of Honor] great. We just have to get the leadership aligned. We’re blessed to have more titles than we can do well today. That’s a good problem, frankly. In the long term, we have to make sure we don’t kill those products by trying to do them when we can’t do them well.”

According to Hilleman, Medal of Honor will return, but it just needs someone to properly helm the project.

“There’s always someone at EA who’s sticking up for any number of the properties we have. You know, I had somebody the other day say, ‘Come on, Mutant League Football. We gotta bring back Mutant League Football.’ So, to my mind, there’s always somebody at EA who loves a property. That property will come back when it’s time is right and there’s someone to carry it.”

Looks like its not all doom and gloom for the series after all. Are you happy to know Medal of Honor isn’t gone for good?

Bungie Hints at Destiny Reveal This Monday With Alternate Reality Game

Something Destiny-related is on its way, set to arrive this Monday morning, February 18, according to an alternate reality game found on the official Bungie website.

The ARG features a week-long count-down to the 18th, displaying a new mini game or puzzle each day. Today’s puzzle yields two distorted images. Following the link at the bottom of the left-most image brings you to a page with the following text:

Our sky is filled with unseen signals. Radio-frequency emissions pulse and flit and dance all around us. Yet even a singing patch of sky can be observed, and transformed into a range of frequencies.

Can you hear it? No, not yet. It has not yet arrived. But together we can receive its call.

Imagine combining the observations of thousands across the globe on an object meandering through the heavens. The resulting array would be quite large. Quite powerful. This is your task.

Alone it will not be enough. Coordination and timing is needed. Observations must be made simultaneously.

Your window will be small. Five minutes at most. But windows may be reopened. And the distance between observer pairs will be key.

There will always be limitations in clarity, so the results must be archived for study. Highly technical observers may be required. Detailed frequency analysis is recommended.

Everything that belongs to us will be ours, but only if we create the capacity to receive it.

IGN notes that the page, called Alpha Lupi, refers to the brightest star in the Lupus constellation.

So far, Bungie has only confirmed that a lecture would be taking place during GDC 2013 where the team would be talking about their new IP. However, a marketing video released last Thursday hinted at a reveal “within a matter of weeks.” Looks like we’ll find out this Monday.

You can follow the countdown and play the game yourself right here.

The first installment of Bungie’s series of four games called Destiny is said to be released this year exclusively on the Xbox 360, with following titles releasing on the PC as well as Microsoft’s and Sony’s next-gen platforms. Learn more about Destiny, including leaked story concepts, right here.

Xbox 720 & The Halo Movie

The major roadblock to a Halo movie has always been money.  Not in the sense that Microsoft can’t get the money – in the sense that they don’t want to lose money.  Making a Halo movie with a major studio like Warner Brothers or Fox would require Microsoft to give up their rights to exclusively distribute Halo content, which is something Microsoft really can’t afford to do considering it’s their flagship title.  So how do we get a Halo movie out of Microsoft?  Simply put, they make it an Xbox 720/Windows 8 exclusive.

[youtube id=”eThw2ofskoU” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Now I know how silly this sounds, but bear with me.  The future of consoles isn’t in gaming.  Yes, it’s what they’ve built their empire on, but how many people game on their TV as opposed to how many watch movies on their TV?  The difference is extreme to say the least.  Microsoft and Sony both know this, it’s why Netflix is on both of them.  So obviously the big 2 are building their next generation systems to be capable gaming machines and powerful media centers.  Their goal is to make it so the only thing connected to your TV is a console.  But putting Netflix on something is really more a matter of how much stress your network can handle than it is that your network is a good distribution platform for entertainment in video form.  To prove that the consoles can take over the living room, the big two need to prove that the content they make for it will sell well outside of the gaming community.

A version of a Halo movie has been in development hell since Halo 1 launched, so the anticipation for it couldn’t be any more buzz-worthy.  People WANT a Halo movie.  Microsoft wants to prove that Windows 8 is the unified solution to connecting all of your devices.  Considering how broad reaching Windows 8 is becoming, how well the new consoles will sell (it’s a given at this point that they’ll sell well), and how easy it would be for Microsoft to run an ad universally across Windows 8 and the Xbox 720, a Halo movie exclusive to the Xbox 720 and Windows 8 users would undoubtedly sell well.

Assuming it does, a Halo movie would prove to the major studios, distributors, directors, and actors that the consoles are the new movie theater,  the new TV, and can be highly profitable because there’s no middle man.  You don’t have to ship thousands of film reels, you don’t have to securely deliver thousands of hard drives with movies on them, and you don’t have to pay a network like NBC or HBO to run your content on a console.

Now, it’s obvious that as far as movies are concerned, Netflix is the future, which is why a lot of people think my idea won’t work.  But if Netflix and the console makers team up, networks like HBO are screwed.  Getting a movie to viewers will be a lot easier when you don’t have to convince them to pay their cable company more for the same content you can get on your console for less money, WAY more control, and WAY more variety.  So maybe the premiere of the Halo movie is a “live” broadcast exclusive to the Xbox 720/Windows 8 on launch day and Netflix members can stream it the day after or something.

Regardless of how they do it, the Xbox 720 needs something to prove it can compete as source of original premium entertainment and not just another Netflix box.

Also, they should totally cast Veselka as the guy that gets blown up first in the Halo movie!

What are your thoughts?  Would you pay to see a Halo movie if it was only available on the Xbox 720 or Windows 8?  Let us know!

Killzone 4 a Possible Launch Window Title For The “PlayStation 4”

Killzone 4 could be a launch title for the PlayStation 4, according to sources from VideoGamer.

According to these sources, the unannounced title said to be in development at Guerrilla Games could possibly be revealed during the PlayStation meeting this February 20, where Sony is expected to officially announce the “PlayStation 4.”

During the announcement of the PlayStation 3, similar circumstances occurred as a trailer was released for Killzone 2. Additionally, a solid shooter launching aside or close to the “PS4” launch would be likely considering the genre’s popularity.

The sources comments suggest that Killzone 4 could indeed be a title releasing in the launch window for the “PlayStation 4,” said to release by the end of 2013.

Killzone 3 was released on the PlayStation 3 in 2011.

Borderlands 2 – Gearbox President Addresses Issues Surrounding Increased Level Cap

By now, many of you guys have already reached the level cap of 50 on Borderlands 2 with various characters and are dying to get your favorite vault hunter to the new level cap, expected to arrive sometime during the first quarter of this year.

According to Gearbox’s president Randy Pitchford, implementing an increased level cap for Borderlands 2 may be a lot tougher then people think. This is due to various reason’s such as literally breaking the game, from impossible skill tree combinations and more. Speaking to Venturebeat, Randy explained the many challenges that come with increasing the level cap.

Randy admits that there are those players that are hesitant to continued the story as they wait for a level cap  – players who are “in this spot where you kind of want to wait until you have an opportunity to get the … . Experience drives toward leveling up. You want that to also be in the loop when you’re experiencing the new campaign content, so you’re holding off on the campaign content until you have that.”

“When it comes to skill tree combinations beyond level 50, Randy says that “Some of those things start to become game-breaking. This has actually created a huge problem for us. We designed the skills really well this time, but we did, for better or for worse, make a lot of the decisions with the knowledge that there will be no more skill points available to put into any trees after you reach level 50. We knew the impossible configurations. Some of the design exploits that. Some of the impossible configurations, if they were possible, would break the game. Sometimes very literally. ‘Oh, that’s gonna blow memory. Your Xbox will crash.'”

“So now we’re in a world where … . We, as customers and gamers ourselves, hear the fans. People want to level up more. It makes sense. We totally get it. We did it in Borderlands 1, so we have the precedent. And we’re gonna break our fucking game if we change the math. If we change it up, who knows what the balance will do? People don’t want to just level up. They also want the game to level up with them. If I’m level 55 and everybody else is level 50, it’s a walkover. I want to get level 55 gear if I’m level 55. I want to fight level 55 enemies. Then we have to make the whole game over again.”

“It becomes this really … ‘oh, shit, have we painted ourselves into a corner here?’ Yes, the Achievement indicates that some of us, somewhere, wrote that Achievement and anticipated it, just as many customers do, because of the last game. But we’re now in this world where we’re confronting the reality of what it means to do that work, and it’s terrifying and challenging. It’s easy to imagine, when we’re playing the game, “We could just change the number, and everything would be fine.” No, dude, there’s a lot … . This is the most fundamental thing about the game. It’s a big deal.”

Randy continues, “…we’re in the middle of it. There might be things that aren’t going to work the same way. We might have to radically change the game. We have to think, “What’s more important? Do you we maintain these skills, or do we let people level up? What if we have to change skills?” We shipped the game with this shield that was totally broken.”

When it comes to the expectation of increasing the level cap through DLC, Randy admits, “I think that’s a fair expectation because we did offer a level cap increase in Borderlands 1 in line with the third DLC.”

If and when the proposed level cap increase arrives, what would you guys like to see be the new level cap for Borderlands 2? Let us know in the comment section below!

Battlefield 3: End Game – All Map Names Revealed, More on Motor-Bikes and Big Jumps

Battlefield 3 developers DICE are busy fine-tuning and testing motor-bikes – motor-bikes you’ll be riding in End Game, that is, Battlefield 3’s last expansion pack due out this March.

DICE QA Analys Malin von Matern recently laid down some interesting tid bits of information on the Battlefield Blog regarding her favorite new Battlefield vehicle, the motor-bike.

BF3 End Game

As childish as it might sound, getting the jumps on End Game’s maps just right was an important aspect of her work. It’s important to maneuver the battlefield quickly and fluidly in order to keep the fight’s momentum going. To ensure minimal frustration on the player’s part, Malin needed to ensure that players weren’t crashing in awkward spots on the map when going for that sick air. One instance of this was on “Operation Riverside,” around the “mega jump.” Play testers were often crashing in a ditch hidden by the jump itself. Here’s an example of how she fixed the tricky situation.

1-2
Death trap (left) avoided by careful placement of tree as visual marker (right).
2-2
Same death trap as above, this time from a 1P view.

Malin mentioned that not all jumps on each of the four new maps are so obvious. While jumps on Operation Riverside might be made clear by metal ramps supported by dirt piles, Kiasar Railroad, for example, features jumps that are “molded with the landscape and often made out of wooden planks laid out on dirt mounds. This encourages players to explore the levels to see if they can find all the jump spots,” she writes.

Check out the DICE QA team testing out some jumps below.

[youtube id=”pAMyJyh_Gno” width=”618″ height=”378″]

While the two previously mentioned maps – Kiasar Railroad and Operation Riverside – are two of the more jump-centric maps, Malin writes that “the other two maps – Nebandan Flats and Sabalan Pipeline – rely more on using the skills you have learned on the constructed jumps on the raw terrain. I have personally had lots of “Battlefield Moments” during playtests on these maps. My knowledge of what I can make the motorbike do has saved my skin more than once. So don’t be fooled if you have a hard time spotting jumps on those maps. They are there, just a bit more hidden.”

BF3 End Game

If you haven’t yet, make sure to read up on the new dropship and AA vehicles. You can also catch the latest Capture the Flag gameplay trailer here.

Does the sound of catching some sweet air with the brand new motor-bike in End Game have you excited for Battlefield 3’s last expansion pack?

In addition Crytek also plans to make a few changes to the Crysis 3 multiplayer, “articularly to game balance and technical issues. Many of these improvements are based off of your feedback, so thanks again for enabling us to provide you with continued support.”

Crytek also commented on the matter of cheating, promising to work on identifying exploits and refining detection to protect legitimate Crysis 3 players from being banned by mistake.

Head on over to the MyCrysis forums to report cheaters, as well as to provide general feedback for the Crysis 3 Multiplayer beta.

Crytek on Crysis 4: “We Have So Many Different Ways We Can Go”

Crysis 3 is still in beta, but Crytek Producer Mike Read is already talking Crysis 4.

Speaking to VG247, Read said that while the team is already getting amped up for Crysis 4, they’re first looking forward to a much needed break after the release of Crysis 3. “We’re still at very early stages with things,” said Read. “We’re just literally getting gold status on Crysis 3 right now, so we wanted to give the guys a bit of a break, have them come back fresh, and have them start looking at what’s going to happen next.

He added, “But I think we have a lot of room left in the franchise. We have a lot of directions that we can go. Cevat Yerli has said it himself. We have a lot of ideas. His brain is always working. So, we’ll get there.”

There is certainly more Crysis to be had – beyond the story of Prophet. What’s the deal with the Ceph alines? What’s the true story behind the Nanosuit? What is to become of the human race? All this and more are stories waiting to be told.

“We’ve built such a strong franchise that – this is not the end of Crysis in general or the end of the series. There are still stories inside the Crysis universe. We have so many different ways we can go.

Despite the Crysis series being one of the most important FPS series of all time, that doesn’t mean Crysis 4 will follow the same footsteps. “Will it be an FPS? I have no idea,” stated Read. “That’s up to the designers, and when we have something to announce we’ll definitely talk more about that.”

Meanwhile, Crysis 3 is due out this February 19, only a few weeks away.

EA Origin Launches on Mac, Line Up Includes Dragon Age 2, Batman: Arkham City, Sims 3 and More

EA’s direct download application, Origin, is now available for Mac users worldwide.

Mac users will now have access to similar features to that found on the PC, “including cloud storage to save and continue games, social connectivity via friends lists, and more.” More importantly, for those who play on both Mac and PC devices, Origin will now allow dual-platform play for select EA titles. For example, users can purchase a game on a PC and download it on the Mac later on, provided the title is available for both platforms.

Origin for Mac launches with a few nifty titles, including Dragon Age 2, Batman: Arkham City, LEGO Harry Potterand The Sims 3. Those interested in the Sims will be happy to know that the Anniversary sale will give players the chance to download The Sims 3 base game, plus numerous expansion and stuff packs for as little as $10. These savings on Origin are only available for a limited time, so players should act fast.

EA notes that for the best experience on the Mac, users should be running OS X 10.6.8 or newer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better.
