Aliens: Colonial Marines “Bug Hunt” DLC Leaked, Pricing And Release Date Revealed

For those who were disappointed by the announcement of no hoard mode in Colonial Marines, you may be happy to hear that GearBox is working on it, and according to a Walmart ad, it will be releasing next month.

Posted on the official Gearbox forums, the image down below was taken at a Walmart. It reveals that the DLC “Bug Hunt” which appears to be a survival/hoard mode, will be releasing on March 19th for $14.99. Members over at the Gearbox forums have been wondering if this would be a Walmart exclusive, and although we can’t confirm whether it is or not, we are confident enough that it’ll most likely make it’s way to everyone.

PS All-Stars Wins DICE Fighting Game of The Year, SuperBot Entertainment Let Go By Sony, All DLC Handled Internally

This week sure has been busy for Playstation All-Star: Battle Royale. We’ll start with the good news first, and that’s that this year’s DICE event has awarded PS All-Star fighter of the year. No doubt that this is an incredible feat for the title.

As for the bad news, Sony and SuperBot Entertainment have revealed that they are no longer working with each other. Sony announced that they have cut ties with SuperBot and that all future DLC wil be handled by Santa Monica, the developers of God of War.

The two DLC sets that are set to release in a few weeks is still on schedule. As for planned DLC that SuperBot had such as “Abe from Abe Odyssey,” there are no details from Sony whether this has been cancelled, but Sony did say that they do plan on continuing supporting the title with more DLC.

It’s important to note that SuperBot Entertainment was an independent studio that wasn’t actually owned by Sony. They are currently seeking another publishers, so don’t expect this to be the last time we hear from them. Thanks IGN

Dead Space 3 Co-Op Review

Dead Space 3 Co-Op is a gamers’ game. It’s rare these days to sit down with a buddy and have a fun, high-action, shoot’em up experience. With every developer trying to either wow or impress us, it feels like every game is hitting us over the head with a sack full of set pieces and dramatic cutscenes. Visceral Games has struck a really nice balance with the DS3 Co-Op gameplay of drama, action, horror, and pseudo-RPG. The scares are scarce enough to not make them feel bland or predictable (beware the pinball machine). The controls handle quite well, though my two left hands seem to like pulling out the stupid scavenger bot in every panic-inducing boss fight. Speaking of boss fights… DAYUM SON! Honestly, I’ve never looked forward to a boss fight like I have in DS3 Co-Op. Not only do the boss fights require teamwork, they’re easy enough to not be annoying but hard enough to be challenging. They also look cool as hell, so there’s that.

Before we get into the nitty gritty, I thought I’d share my playthrough of the game that I’m doing with WingsOfRedemption. We’re old school gamer nerds that have a lot of fun playing games like DS3 and I think that’s a sharp contrast to the other people doing “let’s plays” these days:

[youtube id=”NXbpIWxhutY” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Teamwork

This is probably the one thing DS3 could do better. Rather than giving you and your partner enemies that require two minds (and guns) to defeat, the game more or less just throws an extra set of enemies at you. Making a partner a requisite more for survival and progress then creative “problem” solving, except for the boss fights, where two guns seems like barely enough. There are of course some puzzle moments where it seems like flipping a switch wakes up every necromorph in the universe and you’re stuck rotating space junk while your partner has to fight the fires of hell itself just to keep you from getting killed. But overall, it feels like your partner is just backup and not an integral part of the experience. The gameplay is fun enough to make up for the lack of depth in this regard though and the game takes great care in reminding you of how dead you would be without someone to cover your ass.

Environments

You’d think people would have figured out by now that derelict space ships are nothing but trouble and just end up exploding anyway. Thankfully, there’s a planet in this one! Lapses in judgment aside though, every room in this game is fantastic looking and each set of levels feels very unique. Visceral Games really put a lot of thought into each set of levels, giving them their own distinct place in time and matching the wear and tear to it. Some levels looks brand-spanking new, others look like burned-down crack houses. All of them look fantastic. The planet you end up on about ⅓ of the way through the game is like Hoth 2.0, and that’s ok. When you first land, staying alive is more dependant how long you have until you freeze to death than how fast you can take down necromorphs, but the two combine to make for some of the most frantic and fun gameplay I’ve had in a Co-Op game to date. Being a big “The Thing” fan, this planet made me super nostalgic for Kurt Russel’s alien-ass-kicking. Thankfully, I get to kick plenty of ass in DS3.

RPG Elements

I don’t have much to say about the weapon customization built into DS3 other than while I’d rather just be given pre-built guns, being able to make a flamethrowing shotgun with an assault rifle and medkit sharing device built into it is pretty freakin’ sweet, especially once you have the right parts. Most of the time, you’ll find yourself building useless pea shooters or super-powerful death-bringers that have the fire rate of a musket, but putting together your latest experiment in munitions absurdity has it’s novelty. Though I wish DS3’s weapon building system had more in the way of a guide to making the “right” weapons, overall I find it to be more of a background annoyance that’s easily overlooked than anything else. Weapon building is more of a “two rednecks shooting fancy guns” than it is an intuitive and simple experience, but it gets the job done and helps pace the game quite nicely. There’s nothing like knowing you’re going to be safe until you leave a room too.

Horror

It’s funny. I caught myself complaining that the game wasn’t messing with my mind enough, then it started throwing creepy hallucinations and birthday gifts at me. Honestly, DS3 isn’t as scary as it’s predecessors, but I think that has more to do with how stone-cold of a badass I am than it does that they’re aren’t scary. Co-Op is really challenging to make scary because you know your partner is always right there with you. Splitting us up more would have made the horror more immersive, but I find that getting split up typically just alienates me from the game as I always want to go back and replay the game as my partner to experience their side of the split. Generally, despite maybe not being a horror-ride like DS1, DS3 is eerie as hell 99% of the time and Visceral knew going into it that we’ve played this game twice already, so the jump scares are subtle and as infrequent as possible.

Navigation

Let’s be real, the objective marker in Dead Space is the best obj. marker of all time. It’s simple, always works right, and is really cool. The level design lends itself to leading you in the right direction, so getting lost isn’t really an option, but because each level’s environments all have the same look and feel, getting turned around while trying to complete the side missions will happen every now and then. Don’t get me wrong, the environments don’t get bland, and when they’re about to, a giant monster tries to eat you, destroying the level in the process. But I found that all the doors in an area being the same left me wondering if I was going the right way, then I hit the B key.

Story/Characters

All you really need to know is that the characters of DS3 have just enough substance to not feel invisible, but they’re never going to feel “well-developed,” which is fine to be honest. I want to shoot creepy abominations, not commiserate with the people they’re trying to eat. The storyline is, well dumb. I mean, not that it doesn’t make sense and isn’t interesting, it is, very much so, an engrossing and fun story, just for people that haven’t been playing Dead Space since the series started. It feels recycled, but not in a distracting or boring way. That’s not to say it isn’t good, just that we still have no freakin’ clue why the markers exist and someone’s always either trying to blow them up or worship them. I WANT ANSWERS DAMNIT! I just wish everyone wasn’t so obsessed with repeating the mistakes that they’ve been making since DS1. Maybe the storyline was a missed opportunity to do something interesting in DS3’s Co-Op, but I’m too busy kicking ass to care.

Summary

DS3’s Co-OP does right what every other DS game did, albeit a slightly less “interesting,” but that’s only because we’ve been on this ride before. A lack of freshness is inherent to the concept of the sequel, so I’m not going to throw a hissy fit for getting the same polished experience DS has been known for since DS1. Overall, the game plays well and is just downright fun to play. The Co-Op is engrossing, well paced, exciting, and doesn’t feel like a side note. Regardless of whether or not you played any of the other DS games, If you’re looking for a solid 2 player experience and don’t mind blood-covered hallways and corpses with tentacles trying to maul your face, Dead Space 3’s Co-Op is well worth the $60, plus you get a whole other game!

This review was based on the PC version of Dead Space 3.

Next Call of Duty Announced for 2013, Activision Expects Sales To Be Down From Black Ops 2

Activision announces yet another Call of Duty release for Q4 2013, but what might surprise you about this rather unsurprising reveal is that the company expects that it will not perform as well as the previously released Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

During a recent investor call, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg stated, “For Call of Duty, consistent with our past practices, we are planning for the mainline release in Q4 to be down versus 2012.”

Black Ops 2, despite earning half a million dollars within its first 24 hours of release and one billion dollars within 15 days, ended up at a 15% decrease in sales, not quite matching up to standards set by previous titles.

Hover, what is attributed to “Call of Duty 10’s” predicted decrease in revenue is the “challenged global economy” and “the ongoing console transition,” according to Hirshberg. Factors such as these make predictions for 2013 much more cloudy.

He added, “For 2013 on the Activision Publishing side, there is increased volatility this year due to the ongoing console transition, which makes predicting the future more challenging than in normal years in the cycle.”

Regarding the next Call of Duty release, or “Call of Duty 10,” no confirmation was made detailing who would be developing it or whether or not it would be another entry in the Modern Warfare series. We can safely assume, however, that developers Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer games along with Raven Software may be involved, as was the case with Modern Warfare 3.

Along with this year’s Call of Duty, Activision is also planning on the release of Call of Duty: Online, a free-to-play Call of Duty title currently in beta testing in China, as well as Bungie’s new IP, “Destiny,” both of which are not accounted for in Activision’s 2013 earnings expectations.

Thanks, Polygon.

Next-Gen Console Rumor Round-Up: Xbox 720, PlayStation 4, Steam Box and OUYA

Next-gen buzz is at an all-time high as we inch closer to the hardware reveals – platforms on which you’ll be gaming for roughly the next decade – of companies like Microsoft and Sony. New rumors regarding Microsoft’s next project have surfaced while Sony fans look forward to a potential reveal of the next PlayStation this February 20th. Meanwhile Valve and and others gear up to make a stand with newcomers like the Steam Box and the OUYA.

To help you keep up to date with all the next-gen talk, we’ve rounded up the latest on all four consoles in an easy-to-read point form.

All details on Microsoft’s and Sony’s next-generation consoles below are gathered from various sources who state that the info originates from “unidentified,” or “inside” industry sources and, therefore, should not be considered fact until proven otherwise by official Microsoft or Sony channels.

Having gotten that out of the way, lets take a look at the latest on the next Xbox and PlayStation.

Microsoft “Xbox 720″/”Xbox”/”Durango”

  • The next Xbox will require an internet connection to use.
  • Xbox Live will be an integral part of the consoles functionality.
  • Improved Kinect hardware will come shipped with the console.
  • Games can be purchase in physical form, though the system is committed to online functionality.
  • Games will be manufactured on 50GB Blu-ray discs.
  • It is believed that new games will ship with activation codes. (Unsure if used games will require users to purchase a new code.)
  • Specs: AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM.
  • Hard drive capacity is said to be undecided, though MS suggests that it will be the largest unit it has put inside a console to date.
  • Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are being forced to work with only approved development libraries.
  • Operating system overhead of the new Xbox could be considered more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent.
  • MS is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces.

Source: Edge

  • Microsoft will greatly improve its speech recognition technology inside the next Xbox.
  • The next Xbox will support wake on voice, natural language controls, and speech-to-text.
  • Kinect sensor will detect individuals in a room and suggest appropriate multiplayer games after a user queries the Xbox using voice.
  • Xbox will also reply back to users with answers to queries, making it an improved search service too.
  • Users will also be able to automatically resume video content where it left off simply by asking the new Xbox to play a particular movie.
  • With speech-to-text built-in, it’s likely that Microsoft will utilize this support to type out messages using the new Xbox.
  • Skype will make its Xbox debut on the new console.
  • Microsoft will fully detail its new Xbox at E3 this year, with suggestions from sources that the company may hold a separate event to unveil its new hardware ahead of E3.
  • Expected to release later this year.

Source: The Verge

Sony “PlayStation 4″/”PlayStation”

  • Sony’s console is preferable over the next Xbox when it comes to leveraging power.
  • Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box.
  • PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons.
  • The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.
  • A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online.
  • The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.
  • PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014, the delay attributed to the complexities involved in European distribution.
  • Alongside the console, Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral, which remains compatible with the PlayStation Move controller.
  • Move will be available at launch, but it’s not clear yet whether it will be bundled with the hardware.

Source: Edge

  • The “PlayStation 4” will launch this year for over 40,000 yen (about $428 USD).
  • Sony isn’t pricing the PS4 too aggressively next to the likes of the Wii U, it may have learned its lesson from the shaky PlayStation 3 launch.
  • Were the PS4 to launch at 40,000 yen in Japan, we’d expect an American price point of around $400 or more.
  • The PS4 controller will feature a touch pad and be “roughly the same shape” as the current Dual Shock 3.
  • The Asahi Shimbun states in no uncertain terms that February 20th is the date when Sony will officially introduce the PlayStation 4 to the world.
  • The Nikkei business daily has published its own report on the PlayStation 4, becoming the latest source to state that it will be announced on February 20th.
  • The most notable part of the Nikkei‘s report is that the PS4 will apparently use cloud technology from Gaikai, the gaming service that Sony bought for $380 million last year.

Source: The Verge

Of course, we can’t forget about two new competitors on the market: The Steam Box and OUYA. The details below on the Steam Box and OUYA can be considered facts as they have been outlined by official representatives.

Steam Box

  • It would be a cheap addition to any TV, starting at $100 and eventually hitting $0.
  • “The price point that’s going to be hit is going to be much, much lower than things we’ve traditionally seen in living room devices. Better, it’s basically a PC in the console form factor and at the console price point. There’s nothing really magical about the hardware – this is the great thing about PC, is that it’s been evolving so quickly.”
  • “A user who has a great experience using in-home streaming is going to be much more likely to upgrade to a PC in a console form factor and then continue to invest.”
  • The Steam Box will hinge on in-home streaming rather than cloud gaming.
  • “One thing we believe is latency sensitivity is going to increase in the future.”
  • “The ability to do local, high-speed processing will become more important than it is right now.”

Source: Joystiq

  • Even though the core operating system will be Linux, its Steam Box will boot directly to Big Picture Mode. Users won’t see Linux at all, unless they want to.
  • Creators are not particularly impressed with motion control, and that Valve wants to take advantage of advances in technology that can allow games to respond to your body in deeper ways, like adjusting the flow of a game based on your emotions.
  • The technology that can make that happen is already out there.
  • Focus will be on mods, player-created content, stores and sharing.

Source: The Verge

OUYA

  • Once a Kickstarter project, the Ouya will now be sold at Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and GameStop this June.
  • The team is already planning to introduce a new version of the Ouya — with as much mobile processing power as possible — each and every year.
  • While the Ouya’s Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset is no slouch, there’s already a Tegra 4 inbound, and developers are already questioning the Ouya’s hardware limitations.
  • “Our plan is to have a yearly refresh of Ouya where we leverage the best-performing chips and take advantage of falling component prices to create the best experience we can at the $99 price point”
  • “If we could do it for less than $99, we would.”
  • Ouya should be slightly more powerful than a comparable Tegra 3 tablet.
  • Since the Ouya plugs into the wall with no need to save battery, all four Tegra processor cores can run continuously at 1.6GHz.
  • Though some have complained that the console’s 8GB of internal flash storage might not hold many games, you’ll be able to hook up an external hard drive to the device’s USB port.
  • The company is “in conversations” with Google, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon about accessing their services, suggesting nothing’s been fully worked out yet.
  • While Ouya will conduct a “light review” to filter out copyright infringement, malware, and pornography, there’s no standard for quality.
  • You can be a triple-A publisher, or you can be an independent developer who hasn’t released his first game yet, or you can be a student who is just learning the tricks of the trade, and all of you can develop games for the television.
  • Founder wants to curate the Ouya app store based on engagement metrics rather than sales data.
  • “We don’t believe it’s the number of downloads, or the amount of money spent. It’s how many times you play a game in a given period of time, and how quickly you start playing a game. When you boot up Ouya, how many times is it the first game you play? How many friends do you tell about a particular game? These are indicators that you really love a game.”
  • “Our goal is to have television-exclusive games.” Games “may be available on other platforms, but the only place that you can find them on the television is through Ouya.”

That about wraps up the latest on the big four next-generation consoles that we can look forward to in the coming months. At the moment, which platform is currently holding your interest the tightest?

Bungie Continues to Tease “Destiny,” Reveal “Within a Matter of Weeks”

Host Deej reads an “actual correspondance” delivered to the Bungie studies in act two of “Bungie Community Theatre.”

James, from whom the letter was sent, loves Halo and expresses his excitement for the series, as Deej reads the words aloud.

“Your enthusiasm is duly noted,” Deej responds. “It does, however, put a little bit of pressure on us. You see, we don’t make Halo games anymore. For years, we have been working under the cover of darkness on an entirely new universe and you’ll get to explore it very soon. We’re not ready to lift that curtain just yet.”

At this point, a pet (fake) tiger interrupts, admitting, “Everyone knows it’s called ‘Destiny,’ Bro.”

Deej continues: “Within a matter of weeks, we’ll be unveiling what we created for you.”

Check out the entire wonky but charming video below:

[youtube id=”HmQl_WP7t-s#!” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Earlier, Bungie announced that team members would be making an appearance at this March’s GDC to hold an hour long lecture discussing “a whole new world, filled with even more amazing mysteries, places, creatures, and opportunities for player investment.” The lecture is titled, “Brave New World: New Bungie IP.”

You can check out the latest and very revealing leaked details about “Destiny” right here.

Keep you sights on MP1st for more on Bungie’s new IP.

GTA V Predicted To Sell 18 Million Copies, Take-Two Expects Minimal Next-Gen Budget Growth

Grand Theft Auto 5 is going to sell well this September 17 – really well. Okay, we already know that. But, how well?

According to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, GTA V will do 18 million units well. Throughout Take-Two’s fiscal year of April 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014, Bhatia expects GTA V to sell 18 million units and earn roughly $230 million in operating profit.

According to Bhatia’s “hypothetical profitability model” – based on a five-year project using a team of 250 people – development costs of GTA V will have reached $137.5 million with the addition of between $69 million and $109.3 million in marketing costs.

If Take-Two can manage sales in the region of 25 million copies, something that would require additional marketing costs, they could generate an operating profit of up to $390.8 million, according to Bhatia.

With numbers like these, the only other title that could possibly rival GTA V in terms of sales would be Activision’s “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4,” expectedly releasing in the Fall of 2013.

Despite the inevitability of the arrival of next-generation consoles, GTA V is still expected to do well. Bhatia says, “This is a long-awaited title that consumers are unlikely to pass up and we remain bullish on our outlook for this title and for the company.” It would seem that Take-Two/Rockstar games aren’t too concerned, considering the recent move to push back GTA V’s release date in order to ensure quality of their product.

This confidence even carries over to the teams budget planning. According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick during a financial call yesterday, “We don’t have any reason to believe our development budget will change significantly [with the arrival of next-gen consoles]. If anything, we’ve become, group wide, much tighter in how we spend our money. It has been the challenge and we’ve been very focused on it. We can’t say specifically, but, no, we don’t expect to see a meaningful change in what it costs us to release these top quality products.”

It looks like Take-Two and Rockstar Games are in for a spectacular fiscal year ahead, as are gamers anxiously awaiting the return of GTA.

Halo Games Not Releasing On Steam, Despite Rumors

Despite recent sightings of PC versions of Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3 on the Steam Database, Microsoft currently has no plans to release any Halo titles on the Steam Store.

Last Monday, a A NeoGAF user stumbled upon the three Halo titles on the Steam Apps Database, suggesting that all three might have been on their way to Valve’s digital distribution service.

However, in a recent statement issued to GameSpot, Microsoft commented on the matter, stating, “We currently do not have plans to release any Halo titles on Steam,”

As it stands. Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 are already titles that can be purchased for the PC; however, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4 remain Xbox 360 exclusives.

Unfortunate for those hoping for a third outing with Master Chief on the mouse and keyboard.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Delay Explained – Rockstar Wants It “To Be As Good As It Needs To Be”

Last Thursday, Rockstar announced the unfortunate delay of Grand Theft Auto 5, now releasing September 17, instead of the originally intended release time frame of Spring 2013.

In an update on the official site, the team explained the decision, stating that “unfortunately sometimes such delays are necessary in all forms of entertainment, and especially in the case of a game experience as massive and complex as GTAV.”

“Those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they’re all nonsense,” the post continued to read, dispelling all rumors floating about as of late. “Literally the only reason we’ve delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be.”

Lastly, the post also briefly mentioned the anticipated reveal of the official GTA V box art, which will now “be coming out a bit later as well.”

Keep your sights locked on MP1st for more GTA V news!

DayZ Gets Patched, New Weapons, Infection Tweaks, and More

Yesterday, the Arma 2 zombie mod, DayZ, was updated with a rather lengthy list of fixes and tweaks.

For starters, Zeds have a couple of new abilities like damaging vehicles and being able to pull you from open vehicles. They also now have a greater sense of awareness (they can hear you cutting down trees and can speak to each other within 80 meters). The infection system has also been tweaked. For example, blood bags can also give infections and you’ll need to be a little more careful with what you eat or how you eat certain items. Lastly, on top of the addition of a few new weapons, it sounds like scavenged weapons will will now come with a “limited amount of ammo.”

Did Medal of Honor: Warfighter’s Failure Doom Battlefield?

With Medal of Honor: Warfighter being abandoned by EA, there’s a lot of concern that Battlefield developers DICE will be tasked with keeping an EA FPS game on store shelves in November year after year.  The concern comes from the fact that developing games like Call of Duty and Battlefield take at least 3 years to really get the best game out of the process.  People are worried that a stinted development cycle will hurt the BF franchise, and I agree.  Games like these need that extra time to really be the games they’re intended to be.

[youtube id=”vHjFfn2fEeo” width=”618″ height=”378″]

The way I see it, the fall gaming season is a traffic jam of half-baked game releases.  Honestly, I’m glad that EA dropped MOH.  Yes, it was unique and a bit more development probably would have made it a great game.  But as good as MOH:WF could have been, it still would have felt like a BF game with some gameplay differences, whereas games like Crysis 3 are almost wholly unique in the FPS genre right now.  That said, Frostbite 2 is a very robust engine and if MOH:WF proved anything, it’s that it could handle a variety of gameplay options that aren’t BF3-esque.

Hopefully EA recognizes that having a different feeling game coming out in addition to the lock & stock experience is a good thing.  Could DICE being stuck with making a yearly BF installment after MOH’s failure hurt the franchise?  Of course, but maybe it will lead to something better. Here’s to hoping that perhaps the highly secretive “AAA” shooter from ex-Infinity Ward heads and Call of Duty creators, Respawn Entertainment, now under EA publishing, might also bring something fresh to the over saturated ocean of fall shooters.

What do you guys think? Does MOH:WF’s failure put a burden on the head of developers like DICE?
