Den of Wolves Preview – Back on the Heist

On a random Monday in November, GTFO developer 10 Chambers invited MP1st to a private preview event at Unity’s office in San Francisco. Not only would they let us experience the upcoming, and final, GTFO Rundown (GTFO’s name for new content drops), but they also had something brand-new to share. Den of Wolves was that something, as the developer proudly declared that they were “back on that heist shit.”

With the reveal of Den of Wolves. We spent a few minutes discussing the upcoming co-op shooter, and have all the details the press release didn’t cover below.

Semi-Futuristic Heisting

The (perhaps unofficial) slogan “back on that heist shit” is an obvious nod to the developer’s history, as Creative Director and CEO of 10 Chambers Ulf Andersson was the game designer for Payday and Payday 2. Den of Wolves is a slightly futuristic, techno-thriller cooperative heist game. Set towards the end of the 21st century, the global economy collapsed due to nefarious use of ever more sophisticated AI. Powerful corporations lobbied to develop a new form of communication, because simply getting online could wipe you out. The cost for this development, though, was a private location known as Midway City, essentially a sovereign metropolis where no one was bound by those pesky things known as laws and ethics. Unshackled by traditional rules, development quickly flourished and produced a new way to store and retrieve data, using human brains (the details are not really expounded upon here). While this does stabilize the global economy as capitalism can stay alive so long as business can be securely transacted, a consequence of having a city with no laws means competition is cutthroat, because anything goes.

Thus, you play as a professional criminal who lives in this world, where you’ll be tasked with committing corporate espionage, sabotage, assassinations, and probably more. Much like GTFO before it (and quite unlike the Payday games before that), missions will often include stealth sections, followed by intense action, and then things can quiet down as you collect loot, patch yourself or your teammates, and prepare for the next area. Though, of course, this pacing is dictated by the players’ actions.

Co-Op? Of Course!

It wouldn’t be a 10 Chambers game without a heavy emphasis on teamwork, and Den of Wolves promises to deliver that in spades. It’ll allow for four-player co-op, though as things are extremely early in terms of development, not even something as simple as player roles or equipment was explained. The Unity Engine is going to be utilized once again, which is not so surprising when you remember that GTFO was also developed using that engine. They are going to target current-generation consoles alongside PCs, so don’t expect any keyboard-heavy commands such as terminals that you need to type in manually.

GTFO is well-known for being a hardcore shooter. Enemies can kill you quickly, friendly fire is ALWAYS on, resources are limited. In summation, it’s a tough game that pulls no punches, and mercilessly punishes mistakes. Den of Wolves is aiming to be a more accessible game. While probably still not much easier, an emphasis was made during the presentation that more people should be able to complete the missions in the game. The location of Midway City allows 10 Chambers to have brighter and more varied environments, even taking the action outside while being several stories in the sky. By no means a cheery game, Den of Wolves is a drastic tone shift from GTFO.

Grab a Friend or Three

To give a more visual idea of what the game is going for vibe-wise, 10 Chambers showed us a not-for-broadcast concept video, which featured a professional voiceover played over footage of clips from heist-related, political, military contractor, and corporate movies and television shows. So, picture assassins taking their shot, people being taken away in a van, hacking, and a generally dark future where you have to constantly look over your shoulder as you chase the almighty dollar. There was even a second or so of what appeared to be early gameplay footage, though of course as it’s so early in development things are likely to change between now and whenever the game does finally release.

If you felt that GTFO was fun but perhaps a bit too unforgiving, it does seem like 10 Chambers is intent on giving you something that can allow for less of a steep learning curve. It’ll be best played with three friends, frenemies, or other acquaintances, but the increased accessibility might make games with random people online approachable. It’s still far too early in development to talk about release dates, but 10 Chambers is clearly excited to be “back on that heist shit,” and it shows.

As of now, Den of Wolves has no release date or window, and is slated for PC. Stay tuned for more coverage here on MP1st, as we have an interview with 10 Chambers going up soon.

Sega Announces Five New Games: Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, and More Being Revived

Sega announced a whopping five games at once at The Game Awards this year, all of which are new entries in classic franchises like Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and more. The games were all revealed in a brief trailer that showed gameplay snippets of each one confirming that the franchises are all getting revivals.

You can view the reveal trailer here:

In the trailer, we can see gameplay for a new Jet Set Radio, a new Streets of Rage, a Shinobi, a Golden Axe, and of course, a Crazy Taxi. Each of these games looks to have a new, modern spin on them, getting new up-to-date graphics. We haven’t seen entries in most of these franchises in years.

We had heard rumors of a Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi reboot being worked on at Sega as early as last year. We even saw some brief gameplay of the Jet Set Radio reboot earlier this year. While that announcement is no surprise, the rest seemingly came out of nowhere.

Hopefully, these new entries do these classic franchises justice. We’re sure long-time Sega fans are looking forward to their release.

Dave the Diver Dredge DLC Drops on December 15

A new Dave the Diver Dredge DLC has just been announced at The Game Awards. This DLC brings all sorts of crossover content from Dredge over to Dave the Diver later this month.

Here’s the DLC trailer:

From the trailer, we can see all sorts of horrific creatures and the iconic Dredge ship from the titular game surround Dave as he continues to, well, dive. It looks much darker and more sinister than Dave the Diver typically is, and we can’t wait.

The Dave the Diver Dredge DLC will launch on December 15, which is just around the corner. Fans won’t have to wait too long to hop into it. We also hope that this marks a potential future of other great crossover DLCs for Dave the Diver. I suppose we’ll see what the future holds.

If you’re interested in other games by Dave the Diver’s developer, you can check out their latest announcement here.

Apex Legends Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Crossover Begins January 9

Apex Legends is getting a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth crossover starting on January 9. A trailer for the crossover was unveiled during last night’s Game Awards ceremony, and it looks as though several FF7-themed items will be slashing onto the scene.

You can view the teaser below:

While we don’t currently have many details on the crossover, we can see from the video that Cloud’s signature Buster Blade will make an appearance. Additionally, from the thumbnail art it appears as though we’ll get some unique FF7 costumes for certain characters.

We’ve yet to see just how deep this crossover goes, but we’re excited to see it happen. There’s no such thing as too much Final Fantasy 7 content, no matter what you want to say about Advent Children. Hopefully this does the series justice.

In terms of Apex Legends’ own story, the last part of Kill Code recently released, and you can check that out here.

The Game Awards Gave More Air Time to Anyone Other Than The Winners, and That Needs to Change

The Game Awards wouldn’t exist without the very people it celebrates, so why did they keep rushing them off the stage?

Look, I won’t pretend I don’t watch The Game Awards, mostly to see what new game gets announced. That’s probably the mindset of many out there in the gaming community. It brings in viewership and is, in part, the big reason that makes The Game Awards so successful because, without them, the show probably wouldn’t draw as much attention from the public.

It’s the sad reality of it all, but one can’t deny its effectiveness, which helps bring the gaming industry into the spotlight every year.

Yet, that very same spotlight and opportunity that comes with it isn’t one that, at least from the public view, goes towards the people making these games and therefore making the show, but rather to sponsorships, celebrity guests, and padded segments that make TGA feel like a glorified E3, taking up several minutes to pitch an idea to the world, instead of addressing their colleagues.

This year especially, it was noticeable, as many winners had speeches, only to be ruined by a tune of music telling them to get off the stage. I know Christopher Judge, Kratos’ voice actor, had that moment last year, and they joked about it here, but the joke kept running, only for real, limiting speakers to a measly 30 seconds.

Meanwhile, celebrities were allowed to have what felt like an infinite amount of time to tell bad jokes and ramble on, not to mention the barrage of commercials (that help pay for the show, at least).

Then there was the Hideo Kojima segment. I’m a huge fan, and I mean no disrespect, but there is a time and place to give a whole spiel about a project, and I don’t think a celebration of the gaming industry is one of those places.

OD had the longest segment out of any other game, with the trailer a little over a minute and 40 seconds and the after-chatter being almost a full seven minutes.

It’s a lot of time to dedicate to talking about a game, telling us it’s a game, without actually showing us it’s a game. Lest we not forget the ego-stroking and hyping of Kojima as a visionary, something we all know very well already. Geoff has said it himself in the past: Kojima is a man who needs no introduction, so why are we spending so much time doing that on a stage meant to celebrate studios and their releases from this year? Again, there’s a time and place, and The Game Awards was not it. Don’t even get me started with the muppet, who had just as much time. Are there people who watch this show that actually like those segments?

Those minutes, along with the guests’ spots and padded jokes, all add up, and the ones that take the blunt end of it are the very people the show is meant to celebrate.

I really wasn’t planning on mentioning this in a TGA story, but these last few years have been horrible for workers in the gaming industry. Layoffs are at an all-time high, with work conditions also being a focal of the last year with the whole Activision sexual harassment lawsuit. I know there are plenty out there who are disappointed these subjects weren’t acknowledged at the event. I get it from both sides, and it’s not something I’ll divulge into, as we’ve all heard it by now.

But I will say, though the subject was ignored, I couldn’t help but feel it did the exact opposite. We all saw some of these developers take the stage to begin talking, only to be cut off moments later by the music, a sign to stop talking and get off the stage.

How does the industry expect to improve if one of its biggest events doesn’t even want the devs talking? And I mean that generally, not just about the layoffs and such.

The last few years have been about bringing this issue into the light, finding out that there are some publishers out there who refuse to listen to those very voices, doing everything in their power to silence them. It felt like The Game Awards was doing that very thing.

The Game Awards 2023 Muppet

Why are we trying to rush someone who just wants to say thank you? The show isn’t even being broadcast on TV like the Oscars. Outside the venue rental time, running out of air time is next to impossible when your streaming platform is Twitch and YouTube.

We have all these awards to hand out, and The Game Awards sped through them like a speedrunner trying to break a world record while reminding everyone about whatever ad placement they had.

How can we have a show celebrating the gaming industry and its developers if we can’t even take the time to celebrate them?

I want to discuss some of the counter-arguments about this, though. We, the viewers at home, look at a celebrity guest and wonder, why? It’s the same with a few other things that most probably would agree are time-wasting. The truth is, those spots aren’t meant for us to begin with, no matter how directly they address us. I recall a moment from my non-writer job when the company I previously worked for celebrated us employees. They invited some celebrities to talk and be a part of the celebration. It wasn’t a broadcast event, mind you, but regardless, it did make the moment feel special, even though that celeb never worked a day in their life, doing my job at the time.

I know the community groans every time it happens, but if that same feeling I got when my company did it was something they felt, then at the end of the day, I’m fine with them. Still, even at that event and past ones, I’ve never seen our fellow workers who were spotlighted ever pushed off stage.

I will say that some of those awards they presented should have been presented by legends in the industry. I’m sure many developers out there look up to some of these older devs, as their games are the reason they got into developing in the first place. It wouldn’t be hard for Geoff to find that information about who the nominees have looked up the most in the industry. Everyone has their preference, but I can’t help but feel a moment would be more special if it were presented by a legend in the industry.

Timothée Chalamet, one of the main stars of Dune, presented The Game of the Year award to Larian Studios for Baldur’s Gate 3. I’m sure he’s a gamer and a major industry fan, but it felt so off to see. Not to mention that the studio had less than a minute to talk about one of the biggest accomplishments you can earn in the industry. I know their speech was short and ended before the music could be played, but then you see this and realize it’s probably because they saw the sign telling them to wrap it up.

https://twitter.com/javierabegazo/status/1732975428237934964

Game announcements, too, help the awards. As I said, it brings attention because if the event were strictly an award show, not many would watch it. That proof is already out there for several other award shows. However, we had a lot of games that ended with a 2025 release splash screen. Do we really need to know what’s being released in almost two years? No matter how exciting some of those announcements may have been, I can’t help but think they would have been better off announced at another event. You know, like E3, or the very event that has replaced it, Summer Game Fest?

All I’m saying is that The Game Awards needs to do a better job at this. At the moment, from what I saw, it felt like a corporate-driven event that puts sponsors and celebs ahead of the very developers who are the reason the show exists. I’m not saying The Game Awards needs to stop doing these things, as the show needs to get funded somehow. I’m not even saying that game announcements should go away, but there needs to be a healthier balance than what was shown in last night’s show.

Embark Explains Why There’s No Roadmap for The Finals

The Finals is now out, alongside its first season. With plenty of content to enjoy, players will undoubtedly be busy throughout the season, though one question that has already begun surfacing is what’s next for The Finals? While GAAS (Games as a Service) titls typically comes with a roadmap, for The Finals, Embark Studio is playing it close to the chest.

In a closed press and creator event we partook in last week, Embark revealed why there’s no roadmap for The Finals and where their current priorities are going into the game’s launch.

“We want to make promises we can keep. We would love to give you a detailed roadmap for years ahead, but again, people who have been with us for a while, we don’t know where the live service game will take us. Plans are going to change. We will get so much feedback from you players, and we want to address those. We want to really, really, REALLY, and I can’t stress that enough, build a game we want to play and that you guys love to play.”

Part of their priority involves ensuring the game runs great for everyone, and to do that, they need to look at as much feedback from the community as possible. Much of that feedback has been gathered from the closed and open betas, as seen in the day one patch notes. Of course, Embark will continue to monitor and pay close attention to player’s feedback as the season progresses, so expect plenty to see plenty of updates.

Though they don’t have a roadmap for The Finals, that doesn’t mean that players shouldn’t expect more content, as this season should bring more events. You’ll have to keep a close eye on The Finals’ social media accounts, as they’ll be making more announcements there.

The Finals is now available to play on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty Devs Respond to God of War Voice Actor Dig

Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty devs are up in arms on social media today following a dig made by God of War voice actor Christopher Judge at last night’s The Game Awards. After Judge made a joke at the expense of Modern Warfare 3’s campaign, the Call of Duty developers were quick to respond.

The joke was in Judge’s opening speech ahead of his presentation of the Best Performance award, and you can see it here:

Last year, Christopher Judge had an infamous eight-minute acceptance speech for his award. Poking fun at himself this year, he said “fun fact: my speech [last year] was actually longer than this year’s Call of Duty campaign.” The joke got a big round of applause at The Game Awards themselves, but following the show, Call of Duty developers current and prior took to social media to voice their frustration with the dig:

Ajinkya Limaye, Former Infinity Ward Dev

https://twitter.com/iddqd_Aj/status/1732958852176588872

Nelson Plumey, Associate Art Director at Treyarch

https://twitter.com/Ticklematter/status/1733152265081671902

Darcy Sandall, Expert Engineer at Sledgehammer Games

https://twitter.com/darcy_sandall/status/1733031322610958377

Even Barry Sloane, the current voice actor for Captain Price, had something to say:

Clearly, the team is pretty upset at Judge’s joke. In our review, we criticized the campaign’s length as well, stating that we wished there had been more. Nonetheless, it probably hurts extra to see someone in your own industry make a joke at your expense in front of all of your peers.

Hopefully, the Modern Warfare 3 devs are still riding high off the launch of Warzone this week. If you’re interested in checking that out, you can do so here.

While there’s no new Call of Duty announcement at the show, there is one for Judge’s God of War Ragnarok, as it is getting a free “Valhalla” DLC next week.

EA Originals Title: Tales of Kenzera ZAU Revealed With Gameplay

During The Game Awards 2023, EA revealed their EA Originals title named Tales of Kenzera ZAU, which is the first project produced by Abubakar Salim’s Surgent Studios. Check out the debut trailer below.

As seen in the trailer, the game is a Metroidvania style action-adventure platformer, where you’ll be fighting bad guys, avoiding traps, and solving puzzles as you progress through the game.

Tales of Kenzera ZAU is a story of loss, and overcoming grief, inspired by the creator Abubakar Salim’s own struggle with communicating his feelings after the loss of his father ten years ago.

“For a long time, I’ve struggled to find a way of communicating my journey with grief. To now be able to do that through Zau’s story of loss, growth and healing in Tales of Kenzera: ZAU feels so right.

Games, to me, are the most powerful medium to share stories. My late father introduced me to the medium, and what better way of honoring him, our relationship and love than through this experience?

I am extremely grateful and proud of the team of creatives that have helped craft Surgent Studios, and I’m beyond thrilled to have EA Originals give me the platform and space to share this story together with them.”

Tales of Kenzera: ZAU launches April 23, 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Pre-orders are live right now, and you can get the game for $19.99.

The Finals Season 1 Hits the Jackpot With Las Vegas 2032 Map – Here’s Over 40 Minutes of Gameplay

In case you missed the news, The Finals is now officially available, and with it, the start of Season 1. There are many reasons to be excited about The Final Season 1, though the biggest must be the new Las Vegas map. That’s right, we’re heading to Sin City this season, so squad up with some friends because it’s time to pull off the heist of the century.

To give you a taste of what this season offers, here’s over 40 minutes of gameplay on the new map, playing the Ranked Tournament Mode, which MP1st managed to capture in a private, invite-only event with other members of the press and content creators.

The Finals Season 1 – Las Vegas 2032 Map – Gameplay

And no, your eyes did not deceive you; Las Vegas 2032 comes with a new in-game event that summons UFOs to rain down on the map.

The Finals Alien Invasion Event

You can tell that even we were surprised by it, though it makes complete sense, considering Las Vegas is located in Nevada, the home state of Area 51. That isn’t the only alien-themed content arriving in Season 1, as new alien cosmetics can be earned. You may have even spotted some of those in the gameplay above.

Stay tuned as we’ll have even more coverage of The Finals throughout the week, including an exclusive interview with Embark Studios!

PSN Down This Dec. 8 With Error Code CE-107982-7, Preventing Game Downloads

It’s the day after The Game Awards, and if you were planning on downloading some of the few titles that shadow-dropped or won an award, you might have encountered error code CE-107982-7 or CE-107880-4. Don’t worry; it’s not just you, as other users have reported issues that PSN is down for Dec. 8

PSN Down Status and Updates for Dec. 8:

For those attempting to download something from the PlayStation Store, you may have noticed some issues, as while downloads will que up, an error ( CE-107982-7, CE-107880-4) pops up shortly after, stopping the download entirely.

We noticed the issue this morning, preventing us from downloading new releases such as The Finals and even patches, locking us out of the Final Fantasy 16 DLC

PlayStation has not acknowledged any issue, with their server status page showing everything running normally.

One glance at Down Detector shows that reports are starting to flood in with the very same issue.

Not all PSN appears down today, as the storefront and online gaming (for some games) seem to be still working. It’s just that the servers that handle the end user downloading appear to be down.

As always, we’ll continue to monitor the situation, and should PlayStation post any updates or we notice the issue start to resolve, we’ll be sure to let you all know.

For now, if you have any games currently downloaded, play those.

Holiday Expeditions

Hello Everyone!

Another busy year for No Man’s Sky is drawing to a close, and this holiday season we are pleased to revisit our tradition of running remixed editions of this year’s expeditions.

Across the following dates, 2023’s community expeditions will be available once more, taking place in new sections of the universe, offering explorers another opportunity to experience these stories and events and earn exclusive rewards.

In addition to the 2023 expeditions, we are also bringing back a limited run of the community favourite Cartographers, from 2021. The bundle of rewards includes some of the most popular items from across a number of past expeditions, including the coveted Golden Vector starship – an exciting opportunity for players who missed out on the chance to earn these rewards during the original expedition runs.

  • Utopia: 8th Dec – 15th Dec
Work together with other Travellers to rebuild an abandoned solar system for the mysterious Utopia Foundation. Utopia welcomes all contributors to our ambitious new communal habitation project!
  • Singularity: 15th Dec – 22nd Dec
Begin to unveil the history and origin of the harmonic camps in this precursor to Echoes. A mystery that touches upon artificial intelligence, the will to exist, and the very nature of what it means to be alive.
  • Cartographers: 22nd Dec – 29th Dec
Awaken stranded on the fiery planet of Coul Major, and deeply explore its surface as you work to repair your bespoke starship.
  • Voyagers: 29th Dec – 8th Jan
A relaxing journey of exploration, encouraging Travellers to seek out remarkable worlds, reach planetary summits and oceanbeds, and catalogue your findings.

Rewards for the 2023 expeditions include the Robo-Warden and HoverDroid Companions, the Fearsome Visor and Wayfarer’s Helm, the Crimson Freighter Trail, and much more.

Cartographers presents some of the most exciting and popular rewards from previous expeditions: the Jetpack Bubble Trail, Feasting Casque, Exotic Wingpack, Streamlined Jetpack, and the legendary Golden Vector starship.

Left-Handed VR

Today’s expedition update includes a bonus feature that we have been wanting to implement for a long time: left-handed mode for motion controls in virtual reality. VR players may now toggle their preferred handedness between left and right.

The handedness setting in VR links your grip on the Multi-Tool, interactions with menus, selection and placement of base building objects to the dominant hand, while attaching the wrist menu to the secondary hand, allowing left-handed players a more comfortable and intuitive experience.

Hello Games is now working on a new game called ‘Light No Fire’.

Square Enix has released (Final Fantasy XVI) Final Fantasy 16 update 1.002.001, which adds support for the first DLC, Echoes of the Fallen. Read on for what’s new in the FF16 patch notes for December 7 (December 8 for those outside the US).

Final Fantasy 16 Update 1.002.001 Patch Notes | FFXVI December 7 Update Patch Notes:

Update: Complete patch notes have been released and this is a big one!

We announce the release of update 1.21, which makes a number of changes and improvements to the game. The update also allows for the purchase and installation of the DLC package Echoes of the Fallen.

The package features not only a new storyline, but also a new replayable stage, new equipment, an increased level cap, and more.

Version 1.21

This update is available for all users, and makes the following changes:

Additional Features

  • Adds a new Inner Voice option to the Grand Cast menu, which can be viewed upon inquiring with Vivian about the State of the Realm. Hover the cursor over a character and press the touchpad to view their inner feelings toward their allies and enemies. See how each character’s feelings change as the story progresses.
  • Adds several new orchestrion rolls.

Changes to Arcade Mode

The gauge depletes over time or upon taking damage.

  • Adds new accolades.
These can be earned by clearing stages within a certain time limit or with a final battle performance score above a certain threshold.

  • Allows you to view leaderboards and rankings from previous versions.
  • Adjusts the difficulty level of Ultimaniac stages.
  • Adds and adjusts explanations of various features.

Changes to Training Mode

  • Adds an Immediate Takedown option.
With this option turned on, attacks will reduce an enemy’s will gauge by 50%, allowing you to partially stagger enemies with a single attack, then fully stagger them with a second attack.
  • Adds a Megaflare Level option.
This option allows you to fix your Megaflare level to any value.
  • Adds a Zantetsuken Level option.
This option allows you to fix your Zantetsuken level to any value.

System-related Changes

  • Adds a Photo Mode shortcut option.
This option, accessible from the Game Settings tab of the System menu, allows you to launch Photo Mode by pressing the touchpad with two fingers.
  • Adds the ability to enter Photo Mode from the pause screen.
This allows photos to be taken during cutscenes, with certain exceptions.
  • Adds the option to retry from the Game Over screen when Clive is defeated by a notorious mark.
Retrying will return Clive to the point immediately before the battle with the notorious mark began.
  • Allows you to examine the details of the rewards available from the Patron’s Whisper in the hideaway.
