Warframe Whispers in The Walls Releasing This December; Full Reveal At The Game Awards

Warframe’s next major update, Whispers in The Walls is coming this December, with its reveal happening on the grandest stage, The Game Awards. But before then, here’s a small taste of what you can expect during The Game Awards.

Warframe Whispers in The Walls Teaser Trailer

As revealed during Warframe’s Devstream 175, the Whispers in The Walls update will introduce a new cinematic quest, plus a new enemy faction, a Grimoire book weapon class, player hub, environment tilesets, ally syndicate, revamped heavy attack system, and the game’s 55th Warframe, Qorvex.

“Storytelling is the heart and soul of Warframe” says Creative Director Rebecca Ford. ” Our most memorable experiences as a team, and with our community, have centered around building this incredible world and taking big risks to continuously push ourselves creatively. We did not hold back with Whispers in the Walls – this Update will light the flame on our next narrative arc and take players on an evocative journey that sets the stage for a new decade of adventures in the Origin System.”

About Whispers in The Walls:

Venture into the heart of Warframe’s proverbial big bang that kicked off every event in the game, the lab of Albrecht Entrati. A figure cloaked in mystique and allure for the past decade, players will finally get answers to mysteries and secrets they’ve been searching for. Navigate the crossfire between the Entrati and an enigmatic entity only known as “the Man in the Wall” and survive against a new enemy type, the Murmur, comprising amalgamations of inconceivable limbs and brutalist geometry.

Wield the true power of the Void in the form of a never-before-seen secondary weapon type, the Grimoire. Disperse eldritch blasts from the swirling pages of this unknown tome to send enemies’ limbs flying in all directions. Uncover new pages of the Grimoire throughout the story to learn more about its origins and spellbinding details of Entrati’s master plan across two new mission types, Alchemy and Netracells, as well as a fresh Assassination mission with new mechanics.

Explore the new hub zone, The Sanctum, and meet new friendly faces like Loid, long-trapped in cryosleep for untold ages. Bask in the highly detailed visuals of a new environmental tileset during missions within the depths of the Entrati Labs as well as the unfathomably large and surreal world beyond the walls of our own. Mysteries await in every corner of these new zones, including a secret new Syndicate for players to discover.

Upon Whispers in the Walls’ completion, unlock the new power of Tennokai: Melee Heavy Attack moments free of cost! Heavy Attacks normally consume the Combo Counter built up during combat, but Tennokai rewards players with a random Heavy Attack to be slung out for free while maintaining that Combo number. Install the Tennokai Segment into the Arsenal and equip new Mods to sustain a stylish combat flow and keep the Combo count rising to newfound heights.

Soulframe Very Early Alpha Tests Begin December; Here’s What You Can Expect

Development on Soulframe is ramping up, with Digital Extremes finally getting ready for the community to join in on building it. A pre-pre-pre-alpha test for Soulframe has been announced and will begin next month with a very limited number of players.

Closing off today’s Warframe Devstream, Digital Extremes’ CEO, Steven Sinclair, took the opportunity to announce an early test phase for Soulframe that starts this December. It’s not exactly the alpha build, or even the pre-alpha, as Sinclair notes, it’s a very early version of the game, adding four “pre” in front of the alpha. He goes on to confirm what players can expect from this build.

  • First test is PC only
  • A section of the main island has been cut for the purpose of this test.
  • It will feature dungeons and combat.
  • It will include some progression paths.
  • This test will help the team grow the game with the community.
  • Some character customization will be available.
  • This test will be first-come first-served, going in order of those who signed up on the Soulframe website for their early Envoy title
  • Invites will be sent out via email.
  • The first test will be small, with Sinclair saying it’ll be around 100 people initially. This number will grow as development continues.

While he or the team didn’t confirm if what they showed during the stream was going to be included in this test, they did confirm that you can pet the wolf that was featured in the trailer. It was a mechanic the team had just added to the game, with it demoed during the stream.

Soulframe currently has no release date, but is expected to arrive in late 2024 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Warframe Cross-Save Arrives Next Month With Whispers in the Walls Update

After being announced over two years ago, cross-save progression is finally coming to Warframe next month! Yes, those on consoles and PC can finally rejoice, as they’ll finally be able tomigrate their characters to other platforms.

As revealed during Warframe’s Devstream 175, cross-save progression will be available to select players starting this December when the Whispers in the Walls update is released. Cross-save progression will allow players to take their saves from any platform Warframe is on and to continue progress on any other platform, including those outside of their respective ecosystem. Once this feature begins rolling out in December, you won’t be locked to playing the platform you started on.

While Digital Extremes did say it would come to “select players,” the feature is expected to go live for every player by the end of December. It’ll go through a roll-out phase to ensure things go smoothly and for Digital Extremes to stress test the feature.

With cross-save now coming to Warframe, players will now be able to streamline their experience across every platform without needing to have separate progression. If you want to play on a PC or console and then continue playing on the go, either through mobile, cloud, or the Nintendo Switch, or whatever other platform, that will now be entirely possible with progression maintained.

I know this news will make a ton of players happy, as the community has been vocal about wanting this feature. Plenty started Warframe on one platform but eventually moved on to another or grew to play on more than one. I personally started on the PS4, moving up to the PS5, but now I have been wanting to continue my journey on PC. But I also like my living room set-up, so it’s a nice perk being able to now go from my PC to the PS5, and then back whenever I feel like it. That’s been the major benefit of cross-save, and Warframe, for how massive of an online game it is, has been missing out on that feature until now.

With cross-save progression finally out of the way, what’s the next major feature you’re hoping Digital Extremes starts working on?

New Warframe “Qorvex” Revealed as 55th Character; Gauss Prime Access Coming This January

Whispers in the Walls wouldn’t be a major update if it didn’t include a new Warframe, and that’s just what Digital Extremes has for us, as Qorvex, the 55th new Warframe has been revealed! But fair warning, Qorvex is a thick boi covered in layers of concrete.

Qorvex, as revealed during Warframe’s Devstream 175, is a void core, or what the team calls a Crucible. He has a Void Core encased in concrete to keep that core at bay, with his general theme around concrete and active radiation.

Qorvex abilities and weapons are:

  • Chyrinka Pillar – Qorvex will smash down to the ground, summoning a pillar that will pulse radiation damage and slow enemies down. You can summon two at a time.
  • Containment Wall – Summons two parallel concrete wall that slams into each other, damaging any enemies caught between them. If used on a Chyrinka Pillar, it’ll increase the rate of their pulse waves.
  • Disometric Gaurd – A buff that can be used on himself and allies. Prevent status effects from within an affinity range. If you have a kill or assist on an enemy affected by radiation status, it’ll increase the stats there.
  • Crucible Blast – Shoots out a beam of radiation, causing massive damage to enemies. It can hit Chyrinka Pilla to speed up pulse waves.
  • Heavy weapon – The Mandonel – A shotgun-like weapon that blasts radiations. Has a charged shot.

Qorvex looks quite like the powerhouse of a Warframe, as most of his abilities are centered around crowd control with high damage and status ailments.

He’ll be available for players once they’ve completed the Whispers in the Walls quest that’s coming for free this December.

In some related news, Guass, the 41st Warframe, is getting a new Prime form! Check him out in his shiny new gold form.

Gauss Prime Access comes this January.

What are your thoughts on Qorvex? Is he what you are hoping to see? Do you think he’ll become a popular main for Warframe players?

Warframe Campaign Is Becoming More Accessible With the Removal of Mastery Rank Requirements

Warframe is now in its tenth year, and while its fanbase continues to grow, one common criticism about the game is how inaccessible the Warframe campaign feels, especially for new players. With the big December update, that’s all about to change as Digital Extremes is removing many of those barriers, including the Mastery Rank requirements.

For those unaware, Warframe campaign requires players to level up their Mastery Rank. However, to do so, you have to wait 24 hours between each rank, and if you fail a mastery test, you must wait again. It’s a system that’s been heavily criticized, though it’s one in place so players don’t blow through all the Mastery stuff in one sitting.

Still, for those who only want to play Warframe for the story, catching up to some of the newer content has been a hassle with those restrictions. The War Within quest, for example, required a Mastery Rank of 5, meaning you’d have to wait five actual days before you could do it. Understandably, that has turned some players away from the game, as it locks them out of content for a set time. Thankfully, Digital Extremes is removing those requirements, as revealed in today’s Warframe’s Devstream 175.

The Mastery Ranks still exist, but they won’t be tied to the cinematic campaign anymore. You could start the game as a new player once the update drops and play through the campaign without any restriction so that you can enjoy the new Whispers in the Walls quest.

The story skip pack has also been redesigned to a level skip pack. If players don’t want to grind Waframes and mods, they can buy power packs that give them access to high-end game content.

As someone who joined Warframe during the Heart of Deimos update, seeing these restrictions lifted is fantastic news. I’ve often tried to get my friends to join in on Warframe, only for them to drop it once they’ve hit those Mastery Ranks grinds. Sure, it’s a day, but given how much Warframe has evolved over the years and made the story more appealing, plenty want to join in for the story, and being restricted is an instant turn-off.

So, if you were someone who dropped Warframe because of those campaign requirements, you may want to give the game another chance when the patch drops next month.

DICE Asking Fans to Nominate Battlefield 2042 for “Labor of Love” Category in Steam Awards

In case you didn’t know, the annual Steam Awards is kicking off soon, and with it, various games are up for a lot of different categories. It seems DICE is asking Battlefield fans to cast their vote in order for Battlefield 2042 to be nominated in the “Labor of Love” category.

This was posted in the BF2042 Steam page with the following:

Battlefield 2042 fans, it’s time to make your voice heard.

The Steam Awards are fast approaching, and we’d like to ask you to nominate Battlefield 2042 in the category – Labor of Love.

You can help Battlefield 2042 bring home an award this year and bring a little more attention to a game you love.

Plus, right now, you can save up to 84%

While DICE has managed to turn things around for Battlefield 2042, do you think the studio did enough to call it a labor of love in your point of view?

Even in its current state, a lot of spicy comments have been left on the Steam posting, and even on the BF2042 subreddit.

Of course, it’s your call whether you want to vote Battlefield 2042 as a Labor of Love nominee. On our end, we re-reviewed the game this year, and you can check out our new verdict for it, here.

This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Once you have gone Flawless, keep playing! Every win you achieve while at the 7-win level, even if you lose your Flawless, has a chance to drop bonus Trials Engrams, adept weapons, prisms, and even Ascendant Shards. There is no penalty for losing once you’ve made it to the Lighthouse!

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone Flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

Stellar Blade’s Developer Shift Up Form Publishing Agreement With PlayStation

Shift Up, the studio behind the upcoming action-adventure game Stellar Blade, has announced that they’ve entered a publishing agreement with PlayStation, becoming the first Korean-based studio to join PlayStation’s second-party partners.

As reported by Korean-based news outlet Game Chosun, PlayStation will now be fully in charge of distributing Stellar Blade worldwide on the PS5 in a new publishing agreement. There aren’t many details on the deal, though it shouldn’t be as surprising considering PlayStation’s prior investment in the IP, including a reported partnership months back

Previously, Stellar Blade, known as Project Eve at the time of its announcement, was scheduled to come out on Xbox and PlayStation. However, it seemed (rumored) that the project ran into funding issues, facing possible cancellation entirely. This led to PlayStation assisting the studio, and when Project Eve resurfaced as Stellar Blade, it was revealed that the Xbox version had been canceled.

The big news is that Shift Up has become the first Korean studio to sign such a deal with PlayStation. While they aren’t first-party, as in officially owned by PlayStation, a second-party deal means their title will remain exclusive for an unforeseeable future, possibly forever.

Assuming Stellar Blade manages to be a hit, are we potentially seeing the foundations being built for a possible acquisition down the road? Only time will tell.

Stellar Blade has no release date. It was initially scheduled to be released this year, though given that we are nearly in the last month of the year, it’s safe to say it’s been pushed back to 2024. This deal announcement does come at an odd time, and if we were betting, we’d guess that a release date announcement is right around the corner, especially with The Game Awards airing in a couple of weeks.

XDefiant Crossplay Can be Turned Off; Marketing Will Ramp Up Once Game is Out

For those on console who don’t want to play against PC players in XDefiant, we have some good news, as the game’s devs have confirmed that crossplay can be turned off.

This was confirmed by XDefiant Executive Producer Mark Rubin over on Twitter in answering a fan.

For those wondering why Ubisoft doesn’t seem to be marketing or “hyping” the game up, it’s due to the game not being out yet.

Another thing confirmed for the game is a weapon inspect feature. While it won’t be available at launch, it is incoming per Rubin.

Finally, for those wondering what’s happening to the free-to-play shooter, Rubin also shared in a reply that they are working on the game’s crossplay and netcode systems, which was mentioned in the latest dev update status for the game.

Sadly, that’s all the new info on XDefiant that’s out there right now. We’re expecting a new dev update this December, and hopefully, the dev team can give us a timeframe or actual release date.

As someone who plays a lot of shooters on consoles, let’s hope there is an option to only allow console to console crossplay. I doubt that will happen, but one can hope, no?

XDefiant will be free-to-play, and is slated to release on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the last-gen versions coming at a later time.

Payday 3 Patch 2 Preview – Here’s What to Expect

For heisters looking forward to a new update for Payday 3, the wait won’t be long now, as Starbreeze has the next patch coming before the month is over! Thankfully, we don’t need to guess what’ll be in it, as the studio gave a Payday 3 Patch 2 preview today.

During the Twitch stream by the studio, players were given info on what’s incoming. We already know about the new first-person animations, but the two Legacy Heists were discussed as well as a new mask and more.

Payday 3 Patch 2 Preview:

Note: The info below does not represent the patch notes, as that one will house over 200+ bug fixes per Starbreeze. Check out the list from Starbreeze (via PR), as well as a fantastic summary of what’s incoming by the community.

This FREE content update for PAYDAY 3 will offer:

  • Two Legacy Heists (Cook Off & Turbid Station)
  • The Transporter skill line
  • Brand new first person interaction animations
  • Weapon inspect animations
  • Added Infamy Points to heist payouts
  • The “Under Wraps” mask
  • The “Compact7 Lycan” preset weapon
  • New music by composer Gustavo Coutinho
  • Optimization improvements
  • 200+ bug fixes and many balancing and quality of life improvements

Cook Off:

Backstory: An old brand of meth, known for its purity, has returned to the market. The supply chain has been tracked in a lab upstate, and the PAYDAY gang will need to raid the lab so they can sell the drugs themselves. The lab is under heavy guard, and these raids never stop.

What’s New

  • Larger map
  • Tactical scaffolding (added verticality)
  • New area (garage)
  • 19 bag cap – After 10 bags, Final Charge begins and the assault is endless.
  • Influence loot value – You have to be more on your toes and mindful when cooking. You can leave it cooking for longer to slightly increase the value of the meth, but if you leave it there for too long it’ll get burnt and the value will be reduced.

Turbid Station:

Backstory: In this reimagining of Murky Station, the gang is stealing satellite prototypes located in a railyard. The loot needs to be stolen without getting caught, but the reward is worth the effort. The heist is adapted to better fit the Payday 3 movement set, allowing you to complete the heist with more variety.

What’s New

  • Accessible train cart roofs (added verticality)
  • Adapted to PD3 movement mechanics
  • Adapted to PD3 stealth mechanics – (you can slide underneath the train cars for example. That ALONE is better than PD2’s Murky Station)

New Cosmetics

  • Under Wraps Mask – 10 C Stacks. The straps are physics based, so it’s gonna move around as you run around in the heists. That’s actually cool, and the mask looks cool too. Potential to be the best mask in the game.
  • Compact7 “Lycan” preset weapon – 25 C Stacks

Skill Line: Transporter

  • Transporter
    • Basic: Whenever you pick up a body, gain or refresh RUSH. Whenever you throw a bag or body you lose RUSH.
    • Aced: Whenever you pick up a body, gain or refresh GRIT. Whenever you throw a bag or body, you lose GRIT.
    • (I don’t know how I feel about this. I don’t really like that you’re required to get a skill that forces you to lose RUSH no matter what if you throw a bag, just so you can get two bags.)
  • Beast of Burden
    • As long as you have RUSH, carrying objects or bodies doesn’t incur any movement speed penalties to you.
  • Brutal Carry
    • As long as you have GRIT, any civilian or employee who sees you carrying a body will immediately become intimidated.
  • Deep Pockets
    • If you have a deployable bag in your loadout, you start the heist with one extra deployable of that type, but all your deployable bags have 2 charges less (minimum 1).
  • Power Lifter
    • You can carry up to two bags. This incurs a movement penalty. (understandable)
  • Catapult (This is the skill you can get without getting the transporter skill).
    • You throw bags 30% farther.

Animation: Interactions

We know about this already, but I’ll just list them here anyway:

  • Bagging Loot
  • Cable Tying Civs
  • Ordering Civs
  • Reviving Players w/Adrenaline needle
  • Sorting through files
  • Unscrewing Vents w/screwdriver
  • Grabbing Ammo from Ammo Bags
  • Grabbing Bags like a Beaver Hide
  • Typing on Keyboard
  • Scanning Keycard
  • Pushing Button and Keypad
  • Grabbing Loose Loot
  • Opening Doors

We can request other animations for the game. Here’s to hoping we get a middle finger animation for that broke dick piece of shit drill.

Animation: Weapon Inspect

Self Explanatory

Challenge System

  • Recommended Challenges – This is the first step to changing the improvement system. Based on how you’ve progressed so far with challenges, you will get recommendations for what challenges you should do next. You get three on the main menu for general challenges, and three per heist in the heist selection menu.

Infamy Points

These will be given to us by:

  • Completing the heist successfully
  • Completing the heist entirely without raising the alarm (aka “in Stealth”)
  • Completing the heist by securing all bags

The amount of Infamy Points you get for each of these three factors depends on which heist you are playing and on which difficulty. These payouts are added up together and aren’t mutually exclusive, which means that if you complete a heist without raising the alarm, you’ll get points for completing AND for finishing it in stealth.

Infamy Points: ‘Renown’ Levels

These are for heisters who have reached the level cap. Small icon you can interact with next to your level. Random cosmetic reward per renown level. More cosmetics will be added in the future.

  • 2,000 Infamy Points = 1 Renown Level
  • 1,188 Renown Levels
  • 1 Random Reward per Renown Level

Other Changes: Some Worth Mentioning

  • Lobby Chat (This is for PC players only it seems).
  • Rebalanced Skills
  • 300% health boost for AI Crew
  • Mute heist brief VO

Here’s more info from Reddit user GreatAndPowerfulDC who summarized the stream:

Detailed Patch Notes on the way as well. Loud and Stealth Filter and controller feel and naming loadouts are in the backlog. Offline mode still on the table, which is expected. Stealing gold bars will happen in the future. Quick play is also on the table. Weapon stats still on the table. Cook Off and Turbid Station get new challenges and favors. Locke is the contact and not the operator (an alarm went off in the background after they said this which I felt was very fitting LOL). Unreal Engine 5 is part of the Year 1 plan. If they do collabs, it needs to fit the tone of the game (at least for these first years of the game). Multiple day heists are not on the table yet. Maybe female police will be added (which I think is cool). Paid DLC heists will be NEW heists, NOT legacy heists. New tab in the menu for legacy heists (they won’t be tied to the overall PD3 narrative…? Weird. Then why is Locke returning to join PD Gang in the New York revamps of these heists?)

Once the official patch notes are out, we’ll let our readers know. The patch is expected to be released by the “end of November” on all platforms, so expect it next week!

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure Review – Farming Time Again

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure is a brand-new life sim, a genre that is somewhat erroneously established as relaxing and stress-free. While mostly cute, the constant need for resources and the countless options for expanding your farm are often overwhelming for players who want to see it all. Now that this is off my chest, I can say that this game is charming and potentially enjoyable in cooperative mode, but some odd design decisions and other issues prevent it from becoming a contender in the genre.

Four Friends in Need

The start of Ikonei Island isn’t the most thrilling, as your party of four disembarks on the island. The weather conditions are harsh, the nightly colors on the dull side, and exploration is severely limited by boundaries that you will have to learn to deal with. It’s not the greatest first impression, but thankfully things improve in a while as you reach your first milestone and the day finally breaks.

Under the bright sun, the island looks a lot more welcoming and radiant. The vivid daytime colors and fine graphics catch the eye, trails left on tall grass by your character, in a beautiful effect. The protagonists are cute and their appearances varied enough, with the pets adding to the diversity of the inhabitants. It’s refreshing to see a life sim that goes for full-blown modern visuals instead of relying on the retro style that is present in recent releases such as Spirittea and Necesse that, despite their accomplishments, are starting to feel a little tired.

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure Review

Cute graphics aside, the gameplay loop brings no real surprises, as you explore the island in search of countless resources. Divided in fairly small areas that lock your progress beyond shrines, animals, or other features, Ikonei Island is going from enclosed locations to a considerable open world, luckily with some fast travel points to activate. The issue is that the more you open new locations, the more it becomes demanding, with resources spreading thin and requiring frequent expeditions to your camp’s storage, as the inventory upgrade isn’t immediately accessible and not the definite solution to this evil.

What started easy becomes daunting, you get quests that you aren’t really instructed on how to perform, the advisor frogs that give you gameplay tips frequently do so a long time after you have discovered how this or that mechanic works at your own expense, and there’s this general sense of imbalance and misdirection. Sometimes you stumble upon the way to unlock a new area or discover a new resource almost by accident, and as the island opens up and your head begins wondering what to do next, a feeling of frustration sets in. Where is this animal that I need? What kind of food does it like? How can I craft the seeds to plant that food? Where is the resource I lack to unlock this new house or room? It’s too much information to digest in a few hours of playing, and not quite my personal definition of relaxing.

Animals Are Our Friends

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure Review

As you explore the island you are going to find many animals who may be friendly or aggressive. You can tame some of these if you use the right approach of moving slowly and feeding them, making a friend for life that will follow you around when summoned. But they have needs and that is quite an understatement – their happiness meter sinks faster than a hot knife in butter. To make matters worse, for some reason there’s no pause button for the single player mode, so if you decide to take a quick break you are sure to return to companions holding a grudge.

When the animals are sulking, you can’t use their unique abilities or possess them, something that is often useful and sometimes vital for progression. Take the Longhorn as an example, a boar-like creature that rams into things to open pathways or to collect resources from ore mines and other rock piles. When it is in a bad mood, there’s no way to command it, so you have to resort to a very limited assortment of actions per in-game day, from petting to listening, washing and feeding. Animals also level up and become more efficient, besides changing their looks, and you have all the interest in doing this, but the process is cumbersome as they are frequently disgruntled.

Possessing an animal is the best way to use them, going straight to the actions that we want to instead of waiting for them to decide if they should obey us or not. It’s a nice touch, but the affinity mechanic powering this is as unfriendly as it can be.

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure Review

Playing solo certainly isn’t as fun as doing it with up to three friends, and yet the whole gang is on the island. Switching between them is easy, but managing four characters by yourself is quite a task, especially considering that their inventories aren’t shared. This means that if you want to use another character for something, you will get an empty inventory and must once again craft the basic tools and find the elementary resources to do anything. It doesn’t leave many room for imagination; select a main character and leave the others standing still near your farm, doing other tasks that involve plants and things like that.

This could have been much better if your team showed any sign of intelligence to perform basic tasks, such as collecting resources or tending to farming duties without micromanagement, but it isn’t so; we have a solo mode where three characters are simply idle, waiting for you to control them.

As a four-player cooperative adventure, Ikonei Island performs a lot better and is somewhat generous in this regard. If one player owns the game, the other three can join and play indefinitely, no need to purchase additional copies.

They Dream of Paradise

Ikonei Island An Earthlock Adventure Review

The loop of gathering, crafting, and exploring is here but somewhat all over the place, the solo mode feels like an afterthought, and the animal companions are a little on the annoying side, instead of being a joy to keep around. Things look a lot better playing with a few friends, but most fans of the genre might end up playing alone and the enjoyment level is far from being the same. Furthermore, there are a few bugs that hurt the experience, including resources appearing on top of rocks that you can’t reach at all.

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure has its heart in the right place but the execution isn’t quite there. This isn’t an island made for relaxation, but one where some frustrations arise regularly as you explore the regions. Hopping between harmless fun and frustrating exploration, this is a game that deserves a look, but it could have been a much more epic journey.

Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • Very charming looks
  • A gameplay loop that somewhat works, especially in cooperative mode
  • One player owns the game, three more play for free

Cons:

  • Some misdirection in terms of world exploration
  • Animal companions are grumpier than Grinch
  • Solo mode lacks AI companions
  • Occasional bugs

NHL 24 Update 1.21 Skates Out for Patch 1.2.1, Patch Notes Listed

EA has released NHL 24 update 1.21 (PS5 version 1.021), and this is for patch version 1.2.1 and this brings various adjustments and fixes related to hip checks, a new Tuner Set and loads more. Read on for what’s new in NHL 24 in the patch notes for November 23.

NHL 24 Update 1.21 Patch Notes | NHL 24 Update 1.021 Patch Notes | NHL 24 Update 1.2.1 Patch Notes:

Key Fixes and Improvements:

  • Fixed an issue that caused players to load into games wearing a default black EASHL jersey instead of their own.
  • Hip Checks now use default interference logic to create more consistent penalty calls.
    • The player throwing a Hip Check needs to be completely in the Hip Check animation for a hip check to be successful.
    • Added logic that requires a higher relative speed between the Hip Checker and the hittee to create large hip check reactions.
  • Reduced time puck needs to be out of zone to end Full Pressure from 5 seconds to 3 seconds.
    • Reduced the negative attribute multiplier applied to Pinned players during Full Pressure from 20% to 15%.
    • Removed the negative Energy Drain multiplier for a team on the Penalty Kill, to avoid double stacking with the Full Pressure Energy Drain multiplier.
  • Greatly reduced the probability of CPU Teammate taking penalties, and made this consistent across all Game Styles.

Gameplay

Community Feedback:  Hip Checks are really fun to use and useful at making big hits, however they are too overpowered in non-authentic situations and the risk of taking a penalty is too low.

  • Hip Checks now use default interference logic to create more consistent penalty calls.
  • The player throwing a Hip Check needs to be completely in the Hip Check animation for a hip check to be successful.
  • Players who are getting Hip Checked can slow down before contact to help reduce the impact and reaction of the Hip Check.
  • Added logic that requires a higher relative speed between the Hip Checker and the hittee to create large hip check reactions.

Community Feedback:  While using Total Controls controller scheme, players are accidentally triggering Reverse Hit by clicking down the right stick while trying to perform dekes or shots.

  • While using the Total Control controller scheme, Reverse Hit will not be triggered while the puck carrier is in a right stick Stickhandle or Deke animation.
    • The skater must be in a neutral skating/gliding state in order to trigger a Reverse Hit.

Other Gameplay Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue where AI teammates were triggering stick tie ups for a few frames which could cause an interference penalty to be called.
  • Fixed an issue where Shoulder Checks could target a player without the puck, even if the player had the puck carrier lined up.
  • Fixed an issue where in Be A Pro players were unable to perform the Between-the-Legs deke while using the Total Control controller scheme.

We have also released a new Tuner Set to accompany Patch 1.2.1 improvements.

Community Feedback:  The removal of R2/RT glitch shots has made shooting less effective, and overall less of a viable threat. This results in players focusing on scoring through very close range shots, backdoor tap-ins and breakaways which makes scoring feel predictable. Players want shooting to be a threat especially in optimal shooting locations and as your opponents goalie becomes more fatigued.

  • For CPU Goalies, Increased max accuracy error when the goalie is performing a save with a low precision score. This will result in more opportunities for shots to beat the goalie clean and create more unpredictable outcomes, especially as a goalie becomes more tired.
  • The distance required to trigger Thunderclap and Heatseeker have been reduced by 10 feet, allowing skaters to get closer to the net to blast home shots with these X-factors.
  • Reduced the Close to the Net power modifier on close range shots from 20 feet to 15 feet to increase the threat of shots from inside the slot.

Community Feedback: The Full Pressure impact on the team that is pinned is too powerful and doesn’t feel authentic to the situation. Full Pressure while on a Penalty Kill is extra punishing and the time to end Full Pressure when the puck is out of the zone is too long.

Community Feedback: Goalies take too long to recover Energy when the puck is out of the zone and having Goalie slowly drain energy when the puck in the zone doesn’t feel authentic.

  • Removed the energy drain a goalie receives while the puck is in their defending end.
  • Slightly increased the amount of Stamina a goalie loses when performing a save.
    • (Stamina Drain is mitigated by Durability Attribute)
  • Increased the Goalies neutral zone energy recovery to be identical to the energy recovery for when the puck is in the attacking zone. (Energy Recovery is boosted by Endurance Attribute)

Community Feedback:  CPU Teammates are taking too many penalties which is causing frustration, especially in competitive games.

  • Greatly reduced the probability of CPU Teammate taking penalties, and made this consistent across all Game Styles.

Other Gameplay Updates:

  • Disabled chance of Auto Fights triggering from hits into the boards.
  • Reduced the range defending players can push check in front of the net with reduced chance of taking an interference penalty, from 40 feet to 30 feet.
  • Increased the chance of a CPU Goalie performing a Michigan Save attempt from 30% to 80% when in position.
  • Adjusted the Player of the Game / Period highlight reel scoring weights to provide more highlights for important goals and big saves.

Be a Pro

  • Fixed an issue with incorrect line change button callout showing during gameplay
  • Fixed an issue where the Be a Pro player ages when saving changes in Edit Player

Franchise

  • Increased speed of salary scroll when offering coaches contracts
  • Fixed an issue where having the auto-sign free agents setting set to “On” didn’t always include some prospects

Creation Zone

  • Fixed issue where sometimes creating a Defensive Defenseman created a defensemen with a forward playstyle

Audio

  • Updated Buffalo Sabres Goal Horn
  • Updated Detroit Red Wings Goal Horn
  • Fixed an issue where World of Chel soundtrack was playing while previewing emotes, this has been resolved.
  • Fixed an issue where you were unable to hear the announcer speech about games before and after home stand and road trip scenarios, this has been resolved.
  • Fixed an issue during the rush Mini Narrative that after a shotblock there was no shot resolve and instead said couldn’t get the shot off, this has been resolved.
  • Some intros could play for leagues that are not currently in the NHL, this has been resolved.

World of Chel

  • Fixed an issue that caused players to load into games wearing a default black EASHL jersey instead of their own.
  • Fixed an issue where goalie control settings were not being saved after playing a game with the controls modified.
  • Fixed an issue where Banners and Emblems were not displayed correctly in creation zone when selecting to view them from the world of chel store.
  • Fixed an issue where a user’s home equipment preset would be used when the club was wearing their alternate uniforms.
  • Fixed an error that would occur if a club tried to change their uniforms a 2nd time in the matchup screen in EASHL clubs.
  • Fixed an issue where all changes in creation made on Account 1 would carry over to Account 2 after switching profiles.
  • Fixed an issue where the Club Finals stats overlay persisted into gameplay.
  • Fixed an issue where special characters boosts were not showing on the attribute chart when viewing loadouts from the dressing room or matchup screen.
  • Fixed an issue where users were unable to report a blocked player in EA Connect.
  • Fixed an issue where the user would be taken to the NHL Main Menu if they selected the EA Connect clubs deep link while on the purchase NHL Points screen.
  • Fixed an issue where the screens user interface will break if the user selects the EA Connect clubs deep link while in a creation zone sub layer.
  • Fixed an issue where some tabs are missing on World of Chel main hub if the user deep links to clubs from the EA Connect after quitting out of Free Skate.
  • Fixed an issue where the World of Chel coins received was showing on the Club Tab during the end of game screen flow.
  • Fixed various text color issues

Hockey Ultimate Team

  • Fixed issue with display of objectives progress in pause menu during game.
  • Various UI Fixes

Once a new patch is out, we’ll let our readers know.

South Park Snow Day Gameplay Trailer Flaunts Violent Action-RPG Gameplay

The next South Park game being a co-operative pseudo-fantasy action RPG was not on our bingo cards. Released today, a new South Park Snow Day gameplay trailer shows off what it looks like to play the game for the first time, and it’s full of frenetic action combat.

You can watch the new trailer below:

According to today’s press release, a blizzard of epic proportions has blanketed the town of South Park and it’s up to Cartman, Stan, Kenny, Kyle, and you, as the New Kid, to save the town. You’ll get to experience cooperative gameplay for the first time ever in a South Park game with up to three friends or ally bots – unleashing powerful, coordinated attacks on your foes. Weapon-wise, you can equip and upgrade devastating melee and ranged weapons. You can also deploy special abilities and powers that will bring hordes of enemies and epic bosses to their knees. The game even features a wide range of iconic cosmetics to customize your New Kid with endless possible combinations from beanies to Cheesy Poof T-shirts to chin balls.

THQ Nordic tends to do a pretty decent job of making entertaining tie-in games, so hopefully this one matches the pattern. We’re looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

South Park Snow Day will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC some time in 2024. To watch the last trailer for the game, click here.
