Ark: Survival Ascended Delayed on PS5 as Xbox Series Version Receives Release Date

We have some good (and bad) news for all you console players waiting to get their hands on Ark: Survival Ascended. The good news is that there’s a release date, and it’s arriving next week! The bad news? Well, only the Xbox Series X|S version is coming, with Ark Survival Ascended receiving a delay on PS5.

The news comes from a community blog post over the weekend, where Studio WIldcard outlined releases and launch plans for each console while confirming that the PS5 version has received a delay. How long of a wait? Well, if everything goes accordingly, PS5 owners should expect ArK: Survival Ascended sometime at the end of November, with the Xbox Series and Windows version launching on November 14. The team noted that they’re working with Sony to finalize a release date on PS5.

Xbox Series X/S and Windows:

We’re on track for a November 14th (Tuesday) launch day!  As we get closer to the launch, we’ll share more information on precisely when it should be available for you to download. The Xbox version will be up-to-spec with the latest PC functionality as of Nov 14, and will launch directly into crossplay with the PC version (along with new servers, including Xbox-only servers).

Playstation:

We’re hoping to have a more precise date to share with you soon as we’re currently finalizing this with Sony, but it is slated for the end of November. We know this isn’t ideal, but we’re optimistic we’ll be able to share a date very soon!

Following the PC launch and the information and data we’ve gathered, we’ve decided to make some changes to our plans for the console launch. Here’s how everything is going to shake up:

Xbox Launch

  • Cross-platform with Steam will be enabled Day One.
  • We’ll be onlining a new set of Official Servers for the respective game modes (PVPPVE, and Small Tribes). These servers will be running boosted rates for a period of time to allow players starting on them to catch up. Our hope is to synchronize the rates by mid-December.
  • We’ll also be onlining our first set of console-specific servers at this moment so that players who do not want to play on crossplay can play on those

PlayStation Launch

  • Cross-platform with Steam and Xbox will be enabled Day One
  • We’ll be onlining another new set of Official Servers for the respective game modes (PVPPVE, and Small Tribes). These servers will be running with even higher boosted rates for a period of time to allow players starting on them to catch up. Our hope is to synchronize the rates by mid-December.
  • We’ll also be onlining an additional set of console-specific servers with higher rates that will get synchronized by mid-December

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like a significant delay for the PS5 version, though that’s only if everything goes to plan.

Ark: Survival Ascended releases on Xbox Series X|S and PC (Windows edition) on November 14, with an end-of-November target for PS5. It also launched on PC (Steam) last month.

Overwatch 2 Future Content Includes Two New Heroes, New PvP Mode “Clash” Out in 2024

At Blizzcon 2023, Blizzard Entertainment unveiled Overwatch 2’s future content, which includes two new heroes and a brand new PvP game mode called “Clash,” slated for release in 2024.

The new Clash game mode closely resembles the ‘Capture the Flag’ mode found in other multiplayer games. It features five capture points scattered across the map, with teams earning points based on the number of captures. Some specifics of the Clash game mode have been outlined below:

  • 5 Capture Points in Total – Placed in a Straight Line on a Mirrored Map.
  • Only One Capture Point is Active.
  • Match Starts with a Capture Point in the Center.
  • Players Capture a Point by Standing on it Uncontested Until it is Fully Captured.
  • Teams must battle for control of the map, either by advancing into the enemy’s area or protecting their own. The winning team is the one that captures all five points or reaches the maximum score.
  • The launch map will be called Hanaoka, which is a reworked version of the original map Hanamura.

In addition to revealing the new game mode, Blizzard also revealed two new heroes, set to join the roster in the upcoming seasons.

First up is Venture, a damage-based hero with a unique ability to burrow underground and emerge for devastating attacks. Whenever players find themselves outnumbered, they can simply burrow underground, becoming completely invulnerable. This gives her a massive advantage over the opposition. Venture joins the team in Season 10, and you can check out some of her gameplay below.

Next up, there’s the support hero codenamed Space Ranger. Regrettably, we have limited information about her at the moment, as she is still in the concept phase. However, you can get a glimpse of her in the video below:

Overwatch 2 future content is looking great, with a new game mode that’s sure to entice the fans, and the upcoming heroes who seem poised to shake up the current meta. Unfortunately, we will have to wait patiently for these additions as they are scheduled for release in 2024.

No need to worry though as Overwatch 2 Season 8 is just around the corner, launching on December 5, featuring a new Tank hero named Mauga, whom you can check out right here.

Insomniac Games Reveals Who Their Main Universe Spider-Man Is, But Doesn’t Mean Other Is Gone

Insomniac Games knew very early on where they wanted to take the story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, including who would be their main Spider-Man in their universe.

In a spoiler-filled interview with Gizmodo, Insomniac’s narrative director Ben Arfmann, and advanced writer Brittney Morris opened up about the game’s story and how early on they thought about some of the decisions they’ve made, including the ending, which spoilers see’s Miles Morales telling Peter that he “got this” as he swings out to fight crime, leaving Peter to enjoy a bit of life.

It always felt very natural, and I think we all collectively thought it would happen,” Morris said, “To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life. By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points.

That’s what’s been so cool about writing a story about two Spider-Men: they’re both strong, and one of them can be strong when the other is not. By the end, Miles is more confident and he’s like, “Yeah, I got this. How much worse can things get after what we just went through?”

Arfmann chimed in, saying that they knew pretty early on that they wanted to have a moment when Peter essentially handed the reigns of Spider-Man to Miles Morales.

“I think it was Jon who wrote that scene in Aunt May’s garage, and it’s one of my favorite scenes. The way that Miles intuits exactly what Pete is thinking and stops him from stumbling through trying to hand over the mask. Miles going, “You know I got this, bro,” it’s such a great moment between the two of them. And it felt like such a natural conclusion; I’m not sure when specifically we decided to do that, but it always felt like the only way the game could end.”

Now, to clarify, this does not mean that Miles Morales will be the star of the third main Spider-Man game. Instead, at least how we interpret it based on our time with the game is that Miles is no longer the student. Throughout the game, he’s constantly seeking Peter’s help, which ties into the ending when Peter tries to offer it. It essentially means that Miles has grown and can handle things himself.

Looking back at the intro of the game, Peter was all ready to let Miles be on his own while he stayed and taught at the school as Sandman was attacking the city. He was in no immediate rush because Miles was already going to take care of it. It was only then, when Miles came back that we saw Peter pulled back in.

Peter was already training Miles to take over in some capacity. After all, he’s been Spider-Man for over ten years now in this universe; he deserves to take breaks. Ultimately, it means, and this was a theme throughout both Spider-Man games, that Peter can finally balance his hero and personal life. It does NOT mean that Peter is done being Spider-Man — far from it.

He’ll definitely be returning in the third game and most likely be playable; it’s just that New York can expect to see a lot more of Miles, while Peter can finally make time for his personal life.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is now available exclusively for the PS5. You can read our review of the game right here.

Fortnite Hits All-Time Player Count High With 44.7 Million Jumping in for OG Season

Just a few days ago on November 3, Epic Games launched the latest chapter in Fortnite titled Fortnite OG, or also known as Chapter 5 Season 1. Apparently, this seems to have struck a chord with the playerbase, as Fortnite has hit an all-time player count high!

Over on Twitter, Epic announced that Fortnte has hit 44.7 million players logging in for one single day, which has translated to 102 million hours of play!

Way to start things off with a big bang 💥

We’re blown away by the response to #FortniteOG. Yesterday was the biggest day in Fortnite’s history with over 44.7 MILLION players jumping in and 102 MILLION hours of play.

Needless to say, this is an insane number, and could very well be something that’s not topped by any other game regardless if it’s free-to-play or not.

For those thinking Fortnite’s popularity is waning, well, apparently that’s not the case. I mean, with numbers like these, I doubt any multiplayer game can touch it in terms of reach. Heck, even Call of Duty can’t tout these kinds of numbers.

Congrats, Epic! And for those playing FortniteOG, please don’t be toxic and be nice to newbies.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox Release Date Rumor Debunked by Larian, Reiterates It’s Still Planned This Year

With less than two months in the year left, Larian Studio has provided an update on Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox release date, addressing rumors and assuring it’s still planned for this year.

Last week, Exputer published a report claiming that the Xbox release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 was set for December 6. Their sources claimed that if playtests go accordingly, this was the date that Larian Studio was targeting.

Well, as it turns out, this release date was news to even Larian’s Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, as he took to X to debunk the rumor.

He goes on in a follow-up X post, suggesting that the team doesn’t know the release date themselves but still planned before the end of December.

“We’ll know the release date once we’re confident in the release version. The plan is still before the end of the year. The key takeaway here should be that we want a really good version that Xbox fans deserve. This means we’ll work on it until we’re happy to release it.”

For those who don’t know or remember, the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 ran into technical issues due to the Xbox Series S’s technical inability to support split-screen. Due to the Xbox’s parity clause, the studio was forced to find a solution. However, after a meeting with Xbox’s CEO Phil Spencer, the team found a solution, though it meant cutting split-screen out of the Baldur’s Gate 3 for the Xbox Series S version. The Xbox Series X version will come with split-screen.

There are less than 60 days left in the year, and if we’re going to guess when we’ll hear a release date, it’ll likely be during The Game Awards show, which airs December 7.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available on the PlayStation 5, and PC. Be sure to read our Baldur’s 3 review, if you’re still on the fence on about it. Our own review states, “If you can only purchase a single game for a couple of years because budget is tight, Baldur’s Gate 3 should be the one. The amount of content and the sheer quality in display almost makes it feel like a steal, a game that grows on you and eats the hours away, invading your dreams and making you count the time until you return to it. This is the game of the year, maybe more than that.”

Diablo 4’s Abattoir of Zir Dungeon Promises Challenging Endgame for Season 2

Feeling that Season 2 of Diablo 4 isn’t challenging enough? Well, that may change soon, as Blizzard has announced a new endgame dungeon, which seems similar to Diablo 3’s Greater Rifts. Here’s everything we know about Diablo 4’s Abattoir of Zir dungeon, set to arrive next month with patch 1.2.3.

Dubbed “Abattoir of Zir” this is a new endgame dungeon event, designed to put players to the test, as they’re extremely challenging, yet are said to offer worthwhile rewards. The way these dungeons work is similar to that of Diablo 3’s Greater Rifts events. You’ll need to complete the Season Journey in order to start the event, as it will reward you with the recipe to craft a Bloodforged Sigil.

There are 25 Bloodforged Sigil tiers to craft, each opening a portal to the Abattoir of Zir Dungeon. Once you’re in, you’ll have to take on hordes of enemies, killing them to fill a progression bar to summon the boss. All this is under a time limit, where if it runs out, you have to start all over again. Here’s a deeper explanation of the dungeon.

Completing the dungeon will unlock a unique Tears of Blood Glyph, which boosts rare nodes within its range and has a cap ten times bigger than normal sigils. But be warned, with every tier increase, so does the difficulty of the dungeon.

But to help prepare players, Blizzard is adding Malignant rings, which bring back five powers from Season of the Malignant. Players may remember these powers being incredibly strong from the last season, which Blizzard notes they will be re-working with a healthy balance for the long run. These are the following Malignant Rings:

  • Ring Of The Sacrilegious Soul
  • Ring of Red Furor
  • Writhing Band of Trickery
  • Tal Rasha’s Iridescent Loop
  • Airidah’s Inexorable Will

If you are wondering if all of the Malignant powers will eventually make a return, Lead Live Class Designer Adam Jackson said that, at the moment, there are no plans for them all, but will be taking a look at what players love.

Players can look forward to the Malignant Rings in update 1.2.2, which launches on November 7. Abattoir of Zir Dungeon will be available next month, on December 5, alongside patch 1.2.3.

Disney Dreamlight Valley Roadmap for 2024 Revealed

Disney Dreamlight Valley players will have much to look forward to in the upcoming year, as Gameloft has revealed all the free content planned for 2024. Here’s the Disney Dreamlight Valley roadmap for 2024, which should give players an idea of what’s to come.

Disney Dreamlight Valley Roadmap 2024

Disney Dreamlight Valley Roadmap 2024

The first of these drops is coming next month and will introduce Jack Skellington from Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. The update will also bring new multiplayer features and a new batch of cosmetics. December will also mark the release of Disney Dreamlight Valley: A Rift in Time expansion, which is the game’s first paid expansion.

Looking beyond December, you can expect many new characters, including Mike and Sulley (early 2024)  from Disney Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., Tiana (middle 2024) from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, and more! We’ll also get a new realm, as teased above, which we speculate will be Mulan based on the “Dynasty” wording.

It’s going to be an exciting 2024 for Dreamlight Valley players, and we cannot wait to see what else Gameloft and Disney have cooking. Judging from the roadmap, we’ll be getting some of that culinary dining next Summer.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Review – Greater Responsibility

Discussing the greatest superheroes of all time might be a difficult conversation to have, but one consensus nominee should be Spider-Man. What started as a singular boy who gained his superpowers from a radioactive spider has evolved into a complex multiversal existence with countless versions of the titular hero. Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 continues the story of their version of Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they encounter new enemies defending New York City. While Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 brilliantly crafts a compelling story, there are a few questionable decisions that make little sense in the grand scheme of things, but the game ultimately sticks the landing as a worthwhile sequel.

Hunting Big Game

Like the previous entries, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 opens up with a boss fight that also acts as a tutorial. Flint Marko, aka Sandman, is terrorizing the city, and it’s up to the two Spider-Men to take him down. Peter and Miles try to talk Marko down, but the enormous villain is hellbent on tearing apart the city. After utilizing Miles’s electricity and Peter’s quick thinking to bust local water pipes, the pair defeat Sandman. While Sandman is being taken away to the Raft, he informs the two Spider-Men that a greater evil will soon terrorize the city.

Enter Kraven the Hunter. The ferocious predator from Russia has made a name for himself, seeking out only the strongest prey to affirm himself as king of the food chain. After seeing the formidable opponents in New York, Kraven and his army of hunters storm the city. Spider-Man 2 is a loose adaptation of Kraven’s Last Hunt, which saw the hunter finally get the better of the web crawler by shooting and burying him alive. In the comics, Kraven dons Spider-Man’s costume and takes his place, brutally taking down his rogue gallery of villains. Peter manages to dig himself out of the hole with the help of the Venom symbiote and nearly kills Kraven in retaliation.

There are several differences between the comic story and Insomniac’s take, the biggest being Kraven hunting Peter’s assortment of villains first. It’s a head-scratching decision, to say the least, because why wouldn’t Kraven simply go after the person who defeated them in the first place? If Kraven’s main goal is to fight the strongest prey in the hopes that he will meet his end in battle, then it’s a waste of time targeting villains that Spider-Man has already imprisoned. Regardless, Kraven’s presence is daunting, to say the least, as he kills it (literally) every time he shows up. Insomanic emphasizes the brutality and ruthlessness of Kraven, something we hardly saw in the previous game, and it’s only amplified once Venom appears.

The Venom symbiote appears in Spider-Man 2 and is the main adversary in the second half of the game. However, the alien symbiote is used as an experimental treatment for Harry Osborn. Peter’s best friend inherited Oshtoran’s Syndrome from his mother, a rare neurological disorder that affects various organ systems. His father, Norman Osborn, uses the symbiote as a way to cure his son, but there are obvious complications that surface. The Venom symbiote plays a significant role in Spider-Man’s story, so it was only a matter of time before it appeared in Insomniac’s universe. Unlike other symbiote appearances, Insomniac amplified the threat of Venom to the extreme, setting up a dynamic conclusion to the game. The stakes in Spider-Man 2 are surprisingly much higher in the back half compared to the Devil’s Breath virus but lacked a wide variety of villains compared to the first game.

Peter and Miles In Action

While Insomniac’s first game focused primarily on Peter and the standalone Miles Morales focused on, well, Miles, Spider-Man 2 more or less features the pair equally. Both participate in main missions throughout the game (though Peter has a few more important ones than Miles) and have their side quests to complete throughout the city. But ultimately, Spider-Man 2 feels like a Peter Parker-centric story, and it’s a massive disservice to Miles.

Even when you disregard the imbalance of main missions between the two spiders, the side quests specifically for Miles aren’t the same quality as Peter’s. While Miles is helping his classmates at the Brooklyn Visions Academy complete science projects and ask their partners to homecoming, Peter is protecting the city from another potential catastrophe by fighting the Flame and his cultists. Miles and Peter also have specific sidequests that involve recovering old tech from Prowler hideouts and experimenting with bee drones. Both of them share other sidequests, but they’re mundane tasks for the sole purpose of earning Tech Parts and Hero and City Tokens to upgrade gear and suits.

The multitude of suit selections was one of the major bright spots of the first game, and the same is true in Spider-Man 2. There are plenty of options for Peter and Miles for you to use, with Peter gaining different abilities with the symbiote suit. Miles has no suits that grant him special powers, but he naturally develops stronger abilities throughout the game that you can upgrade via skill trees. Peter and Miles have their separate skill trees and then one that impacts both.

Protecting New York

Although the map of Spider-Man 2 is still that of New York, it is larger and more livelier than the first game. There are times when you’re fighting criminals when the other Spider-Man that you’re not controlling will swing in to help with a combo, and that’s a great touch by the developers. Some of the sidequests do offer some character development for Peter and Miles, like finding a lost grandpa and recovering stolen music equipment, but in most cases, it’s busy work for Spider-Man.

The running joke in Insomniac’s universe is scaling Avengers Tower but never actually encountering any of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. There are a few Easter Eggs that possibly point at potential DLC or maybe storylines for Spider-Man 3. Gamers found Matthew Murdock’s office and a secret room that could open the door for Daredevil and the Hand. There’s a main mission in the game as well that confirms the existence of another Avenger, so we can hope they will surface down the road. Insomniac also confirmed that their upcoming Wolverine title is set in the same universe as Spider-Man, so there’s a chance for a hero ensemble in the future.

Verdict

All in all, Spider-Man 2 is a worthy sequel to both of Insomniac’s previous entries and delivers a complex story that will please all fans of the webhead. Several interesting abilities for both Peter and Miles differentiate their combat styles, so you’ll need to deploy different strategies with each hero. Sidequests are a bit uneven between Peter and Miles, with the former confronting more serious criminals like the Flame. While Spider-Man 2 was marketed as a Peter Parker and Miles Morales duo adventure, the main story of the game feels more Peter-centric and falls short of truly embracing Miles as a second main character. Whether we like it or not, Spider-Man 2 is a Peter Parker story with Miles operating as a glorified secondary character. The Mary Jane Watson stealth missions make a return, though MJ is a much more formidable fighter in the sequel than before. Insomniac’s sequel introduces a few new villains, but the developer’s decision regarding previous villains is questionable, to say the least. Ultimately, Spider-Man 2 checks off the major boxes as an exciting sequel with a compelling story that will hook you in from the get-go. Go get’em, tigers.

Score: 9/10

Pros:

  • A compelling story that has higher stakes than its predecessor
  • Playing as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales
  • Diverse suit options for both Spider-Men
  • Web wings for better traversal through a larger map
  • Easter eggs that point toward future DLC or sequels

Cons:

  • Miles Morales is a glorified secondary character. Even his new suit doesn’t have any motivation behind the change.
  • Questionable story decisions with Kraven and previous villains

Immortals of Aveum Free DLC “The Echollector” to Be Released This Nov. 16, Brings New Game+ and More

Ascendant Studios has some Immortals of Aveum free DLC planned, and it’s dropping later this month! Titled “The Echollector” and will drop as patch 1.0.6.0,  this ushers in new gear, New Game+ and more!

Immortals of Aveum Free DLC “The Echollector” Update 1.0.6.0 Content Overview:

  • New playable content, gear, and lore in the free gameplay DLC, “The Echollector”
  • Continue the fight for Aveum with New Game+
  • Brave the new Grand Magnus difficulty and take on enemies like never before

“THE ECHOLLECTOR” Content Update is a new endgame objective for players who want more lore and new content to play through once they’ve reached the later chapters. The events of the Everwar left the Path weak, scattering chunks of the consciouscape across Aveum and creating corrupted Shatterfanes – portals to new, undiscovered areas.

Jak must rid Aveum of these Shatterfanes and put a stop to whatever malevolent forces are siphoning away the Path’s power in a new boss fight. The Shatterfanes will automatically be available upon reaching Glaivegate, giving you the chance to take on this new challenge.

Doing so will unlock new lore for you to experience and gear for you to take on your journeys through the Everwar.

NEW GAME+ has been one of the biggest requests we’ve gotten and we’re thrilled to be able to confirm it’s coming. NG+ will not only allow you to play through the game again with most of your abilities and spells, it’ll also give you the opportunity to further upgrade your gear and take on updated fights.

  • Upgrade your Epic and Legendary gear to higher levels with the Forge in NG+
  • Rebalanced enemy health, damage, and abilities
  • Jak carries forward most spells and abilities unlocked in a previous playthrough
    • Augment spells cannot carry forward due to their unlock requirements
  • Adjustments made to experience and currency earned while playing

GRAND MAGNUS DIFFICULTY brings a whole new level of challenge to Aveum. Face down Sandrakk’s forces like never before in the most challenging mode yet. Every fight will be a battle for survival as you push your way through the Everwar and forge yourself into an Immortal worthy of the name.

And of course, this brand-new difficulty mode is available as a new playthrough or with New Game+!

Once the patch is out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.015 Casts Out for v1.1.292 This Nov. 4

HexWorks has released Lords of the Fallen 1.015 this November 4, and this is the game’s third patch in about five days! Tagged as LOTF update v1.1.292, this brings boss weapon levels back to their previous state before update 282 and more.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.015 Patch Notes | LOTF v1.1.292 Patch Notes:

As stated in yesterday’s update, we want to get your boss weapons back to the level they were before Update 282. We are working fast to remedy the game in accordance with your feedback, and sometimes a fix will require further tweaking before we get it 100% right.

We thought that by discounting the highly valuable Deralium Chunks in the Shrine of Orius, as well as making these a rare loot drop from Holy Bulwarks after fully upgrading Gerlinde, that this was enough to quickly reinstate your weapon’s level. However, we overlooked the substantial amount of time this required.

We are remedying this in today’s update, for those that meet the following requirements:

  • If your current character possesses any boss weapon,
  • and has upgraded any weapon to its maximum level (+5 for boss weapons pre-patch or +10 for any other weapon).

Available for the next ten days, you will find a new item in Skyrest Bridge, granting the following:

  • 2 Deralium Chunks
  • 40 Large Deralium Shards
  • 15 Replete Vigor Skulls

This provides all the resources and vigor necessary to upgrade two boss weapons from level 5 to level 10.

This pickup is per character, so you can retrieve it for all your characters that meet the requirements. It can be found at Skyrest Bridge near the Shrine of Orius, in the small alcove with hammocks, where heroes, like you, take their very well deserved rest.

In addition to this, we’ve decreased the mana requirement for the Blessed Reflections spell and Infernal Hounds invocations, to be just an additional 50% mana to their previous pre-update cost, as opposed to the 500% they were changed to. So now they are better balanced for PVE.

As announced yesterday, we’re going to split PVE & PVP balancing in the near future, as some of you suggested, so PVP-related nerfs/buffs will never impact your PVE experience, and vice versa. But we need a little more time to do this justice.

In the meantime, our ongoing balancing will be focused on PVE.

We hope that this new pickup allows you all to continue your journey through Mournstead, while also taking advantage of the other 100+ enhancements provided in this week’s patch, including more difficult bosses, AI refinements, and HDR improvements (all based on your feedback). We’ve already seen another significant reduction in the number of crashes, as well as some great performance gains over the board, especially on hardware that presented some issues in the previous weeks. Rest assured, we continue to work diligently to further optimize the game, and look forward to sharing a free content roadmap next week.

That’s about it. Once the roadmap is revealed, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Review – No Gold in This Mine

The potential for a survival game based on The Lord of the Rings franchise seems enticing. A huge fantasy world with near-limitless possibilities, exciting building prospects sustained by combat that could sway between cinematic and dynamic, and all those races entangled in everlasting conflict. Sadly, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is but a shadow of this, a slim take on the genre that doesn’t convey the expected enthusiasm, and only the most diehard fans are going to enjoy it in detriment of other entries in the survival genre.

Mining a Shallow Rock

Without unnecessarily diving into the lore that many fans know and love, the start of the adventure of the Dwarves is literally mined by a barrel blast. A cave-in will force you to find an exit through the mines, but this tutorial starts in the dark and is as uninviting as it sounds, even if things get a little more light a couple of hours later. A labyrinth of repetitive hallways and enemies that attack by the sheer power of numbers without any worries about tactics or even solid objects around them, this isn’t the greatest of first impressions.

Forced into the boots of a dwarf, which makes sense in the light of things but might not be the most appealing possibility for many The Lord of the Rings fans, you enter a tale of crafting and combat, with plenty of mining on the side. Advanced recipes are unlocked by repairing the broken statues you find along the way, you can set up camp anywhere you want by placing a hearth and a bedroll, and a host of other facilities follow if you have the necessary resources in your small starting backpack. This is a game of unlocking facilities as you find new areas and new resources, with all the dangers that come with it, from fauna to treacherous orcs and goblins.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Review

The maps are procedurally generated, something that is often seen both as a blessing and a curse – while providing new layouts for every run, this comes at the expense of the genuine detail and care that a manual approach puts into a game. The mini-map design is hard to understand, a bland and vague interpretation that ignores individual rooms, providing equal doses of helpfulness and frustration during exploration.

Instead of easing in players with a friendly start, Return to Moria does the exact opposite with the excess of darkness, enforcing the use of torches and other light sources amidst a confusing layout, and with an inventory and chest system that refuses to stack items and instead places similar resources in different slots.

The other issue that stings is that every base you build has no immediate connection with the previous ones. Since you are constantly moving forward, everything you have built will be left behind, facilities and countless resources included, forcing you to repeat the process – and again spending precious time and resources – for more advanced camps. Only several hours in you get to unlock a fast travel system, but until then your only resort is to go for long walks through areas that look all the same and where getting lost is a recurrent issue.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Review

This makes the gameplay tedious and repetitive, aggravated by the lackluster combat. With block and dodge roll, it could be dynamic enough to be fun, but between the random locking into an enemy that sneakily approached us and the complete lack of intelligence displayed by every foe, humanoid or not, makes it just another aspect that needed polishing. It’s common to see enemies clipping through our facilities and other objects, getting stuck, and hit feedback is of the random variety, with opponents sometimes reacting to our blows, but other times acting as hit sponges, often as their attack animation is already ongoing, although every so often not even that can be used as an excuse.

Occasionally, your base will be under siege, as several enemies decide that it would look better if every facility was razed to the ground. Your only option is to run back to it and fight the trespassers, something that becomes a chore given their numbers, and one of the things that is clearly better when playing with friends. Fighting these battles alone is severely unbalanced, especially if you have the bad luck of seeing your main weapon break in the middle of it. Far from fun, it’s a trying situation that makes the whole game feel more like busywork than an enjoyable journey.

A Glimpse of What Could Have Been

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Review

Return to Moria isn’t a bad game at its core; it comes with some odd design decisions and has a few bugs that get in the way – such as getting stuck on a wood tower and the character vanishing, with no chance to punch our way out – but there are glimpses of a good survival game here.

The crafting system is functional and adding all those walls and doors makes for some interesting creations – not extraordinary, but the basics are there and can provide entertainment for a group focusing on this. On the negative side, mining is a very restrictive affair, there’s nothing of the sort of free exploration or terraforming here, so don’t expect to let your imagination run wild when the game forbids you from going anywhere but the predefined path, with its nonstop impenetrable barriers.

When your dwarf is filled with joy and bursts into singing while mining, a little of The Lord of the Rings atmosphere springs to life. Exploring some areas without any care in the world is another moment when the game feels enticing and hints at the sandbox gameplay that could have been. But suddenly you are reminded that the whole place is a procedurally generated mess with barely any memorable locations, combat is dull and flawed, mining is extremely limited, and the repetitive walks to the base with the goal of storing your recent loot become tiresome. Return to Moria is one for diehard fans only, and even those have to consider just how passionate they are about dwarves and survival in dark places.

Score: 5.5/10

Pros:

  • Some glimpses of The Lord of the Rings atmosphere and potential
  • Crafting has some of the basics nailed down
  • Multiplayer can be fun, but it’s not a saving grace

Cons:

  • Mining isn’t freeform, being very restrictive
  • Combat is dull due to lack of hit feedback and enemy AI
  • Areas are repetitive and not that exciting to explore

Lords of the Fallen: HexWorks in the Process of Separating Balancing Between PvE and PvP

Following this week’s massive Lords of the Fallen patch, developer HexWorks has announced that the studio is in the process of separating the balancing changes for PvE (player vs environment) and PvP (player vs player).

Here’s the full statement from the studio regarding this and other adjustments made:

As always, thank you for your feedback regarding the recent balancing changes, particularly those impacting boss weapons and the two overpowered spells.

We understand how this may have caused frustration for some players, especially as now to get the +10, an additional chunk is required. That’s why we’ve reduced its value in the Shrine of Orius, and will stay like this from this patch forward.

It’s important to emphasize that these are necessary changes to establish a fairer experience for all players. For context, we noticed players were frustrated when being one-shotted during PVP by invaders using particularly overpowered spells and boss weapons. These weapons and the two spells needed a revision.

Please know that we hear you, and as some of you suggested, we are already in the process of separating the balancing for PVE and PVP to ensure that both aspects of the game can coexist and are optimized for the best possible experience in both modes.

We’ll be sharing more details early next week in our roadmap, along with additional improvements we’re currently working on. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us continue to refine our game, and we appreciate your ongoing patience, passion and support.

This should be welcome news for most LOTF players. While there’s no mention of when we should expect this PvP and PvE separation to take effect, I suspect the next patch that’s dished out will reflect this. Speaking of which, there’s no news when the next update will be, but given the cadence on how HexWorks has released these, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new one be released in the coming week.

The Last of Us Multiplayer Project Still in Development Assures Naughty Dog Game Director

Last month, it was reported that The Last of Us multiplayer project had been put on “ice” due to layoffs. While Naughty Dog didn’t acknowledge anything about it then, we have finally received an update from the game’s director, assuring that they’re still working on the project.

Naughty Dog’s Game Director Vinit Agarwal took to X to celebrate his accomplishment of beating Super Mario Bros Wonder. Though that seems unrelated to The Last of Us multiplayer project, this celebration was also accompanied by confirmation that he was still “working on that game.”

It’s not much, but it is something. The last time we heard any official word on the project from Naughty Dog was back in May, when the team addressed the game’s absence from showcases, saying that it needed more time in development before it could be shown off.

Since then, multiple reports have surfaced indicating trouble at the studio and for the project. At one point, it was claimed that the project was dead, though with this statement from the game director, that now seems unlikely.

Fingers crossed that Naughty Dog has a significant update coming for the project, as it’s been over a year since it was first announced, with only concept art released for it. We’re doubtful, but perhaps it’ll reappear at this year’s The Game Awards show. Let us hope, as PlayStation’s first-party offering is looking pretty light for 2024.

World of Warcraft: The War Within Expansion Announced With Gorgeous CGI Trailer

The surprises at Blizzcon keep on coming, as today, Blizzard Entertainment announced not one, not two, but three World of Warcraft expansions for The Worldsoul Saga. To kick it all off, here’s the cinematic trailer for World of Warcraft: The War Within.

World of Warcraft: The War Within Trailer

Regardless of how you may feel about the game, there’s no denying that the team at Blizzard are masters in their crafts when it comes to delivering these cinematic trailers.

The War Within will begin The Worldsoul Saga, which will be released next year. The other two expansions, World of Warcraft: Midnight and World of Warcraft: The Last Titan, will follow it after.

From the press release:

“Beginning with The War WithinThe Worldsoul Saga ™ is grown from the seeds of what captured the hearts of players around the world when they first set foot in Azeroth,” said World of Warcraft executive producer Holly Longdale. “For veteran players, the last 20 years have led to this, and for those who have never set foot in Azeroth, this is a whole new adventure.”

The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan encompass one of the most ambitious creative endeavors ever attempted for World of Warcraft, designed as standalone narratives that feed into an overall story arc,” said Warcraft general manager John Hight. “Alongside these epic adventures, the ongoing quality-of-life feature updates players have come to expect from us since Dragonflight will continue in The War Within, further setting us up for the next 20 years and beyond.”

“As we begin a new era at Blizzard Entertainment, I am inspired by the World of Warcraft teams’ passion for players and their expansive vision for the future of their storytelling,” said president of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Ybarra. “The legacy of World of Warcraft spans generations, and the beginning of The Worldsoul Saga is the perfect time for anyone who has memories of this legendary universe to celebrate, rediscover, and come home to Azeroth.”

An overview of features was also released, which you can view below.

World of Warcraft: The War Within doesn’t have a release date other than a 2024 window, though players can now pre-order one of the three available editions starting today on Battlenet. All I can say, as an old-time player, this has me excited! Let’s hope that Blizzard can deliver on these new expansions.

GLaDOS Serves Up a Roast in the Latest Trailer for The Talos Principle 2

It’s not often you see a developer making fun of their own game, especially one that has been reviewed so well. Yet, that’s exactly what studio Croteam has done for The Talos Principle 2. Or should we say what Valve’s murderous artificial intelligence, GLaDOS, has done, as she demonstrates that she is still the superior being, even in the robotic world, when it comes to puzzles and traps.

GLaDOS Plays The Talos Principle 2

We’re GLaD to see Ellen McLain is back to reprise the role of GLaDOS, even if it’s for only a few minutes.

About The Game:

“Born into a new world where biological humanity is extinct but human culture lives on in a city of robots, you find yourself swept up in a mind-bending adventure involving a mysterious megastructure hiding enormous powers.

The more you discover, the more you will be confronted with questions about the nature of the cosmos and the purpose of civilization. The broken promise of a better tomorrow, the fear of repeating humankind’s mistakes, faith in reason or renouncing humanity altogether – the choices you make and the sides you take will determine the course of events.”

The Talos Principle 2 is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. No review from us yet, but if you’re interested in reading our brief thoughts, check out our Talos Principle 2 hands-on impression from last month.

Rainbow Six Siege Year 8 Roadmap Update Shares Changes to Upcoming Plans

Following the latest update to fix the notorious bathroom strategy, Ubisoft has shared a Rainbow Six Siege Year 8 Roadmap update to inform players on what’s changed since the initial Year 8 Roadmap was unveiled in February. The post details plans for a new map, a new versus AI playlist, and more.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at what’s in the pipeline:

r6s y8 roadmap

Rainbow Six Siege Year 8 Roadmap Update:

[MAIN FEATURE] NEW MAP

  • Status: Confirmed for Y8S4

Y8S4 will bring an exciting addition to the Rainbow Six Siege map lineup. We have been building a new map on the foundation of verticality with carefully designed layouts and fresh avenues for strategic possibilities like never before! Make sure to watch the Y8S4 reveal panel to discover more!

[MAIN FEATURE] NEW VERSUS AI PLAYLIST
  • Status: Confirmed for Y8S4

This season will keep on delivering with the incorporation of a new versus AI Playlist tailored to let new players sharpen their skills against specially AI trained Defender bots to become the best operator they can be. Practice, strategize, and dominate like never before in this dynamic training environment.

[BALANCING] [BETA] REVAMPED SHIELD MECHANISM
  • Status: BETA confirmed during Y8S4

Shields have been part of Siege since the beginning and have sometimes seemed unbalanced with the current playstyles. As a game striving for tactical depth, we’re committed to integrating shields seamlessly into gameplay without compromising immersion. We have been working on this strategy from the ground up, redesigning ballistic shields while retaining a unique playstyle which is both balanced and immersive. Brace yourselves for the first iteration of this revamped mechanism, available later during Y8S4 on the Lab TS.

[PLAYER COMFORT] CONTROLLER REMAPPING
  • Status: Confirmed for Y8S4

We are actively working on improving our players’ comfort on consoles. In Y8S4, we will be providing an easy way to completely customize your controller inputs. This long-requested feature is dedicated to ensuring it answers all our console players’ needs. Taking your feedback into account, we will also implement a new action to allow leaning while hip-firing on Consoles later in the season!

[BALANCING] [NEW] UPDATED FRAG GRENADES
  • Status: Confirmed for Y8S4

As announced in the last Siege Classified: Balancing, Frag Grenades have risen to an overpowered position in the current meta. They currently heavily influence Operator choices, tilting the balance between primary and secondary gadgets in an unbalanced way. With our commitment to providing the best FPS competitive experience, we have thoroughly examined Frag Grenades and rebalanced their impact to be more in line with all the other Secondary Gadgets. More information on this balancing change will be shared during the reveal panel, so everyone can have a blast playing Siege, so stay tuned!

[PLAYER PROTECTION] NEW RANKED REQUIREMENTS
  • Status: Coming in Y9

Ranked is the most popular competitive mode in Siege. Hence, it’s no surprise that it’s always in our line of sight in terms of priority, ensuring that players can enjoy a balanced competitive experience, both with and against similarly skilled players. We are committed to making sure Ranked is a fair environment and are adding more Ranked requirements to reinforce the core experience.

[PLAYER PROTECTION] PRIVACY MODE ON CONSOLES
  • Status: Cancelled

The work required to deliver Privacy Mode on consoles has brought up external challenges that came up late in the process. As well as this, new privacy features have been made available inside of the console ecosystem itself. For this reason, we’ve made the tough decision to stop the development of this feature on consoles specifically for the time being.

As you know, Player Protection remains a top priority, and we are committed to improving your experience and making Siege an even safer and fairer game to play on consoles. Discover more on our plans in the coming weeks.

You can still expect one new Operator and a shiny new map before the end of the year. Hopefully, you’re looking forward to the rest of the features still confirmed to be coming to Year 8. Year 9 is right around the corner as well, and we’ll be sure to let our readers know when we hear the first news on it.
