Quantum Error Update 1.000.009 Brings Weapon Wheel Improvements This Nov. 6

TeamKill Media has released Quantum Error update 1.000.009, which aims to fix the weapon wheel functionality in the game. Read on for what’s new in the patch notes below.

Quantum Error Update 1.000.009 Patch Notes:

Here are the official changelog via TeamKill Media:

Main fixes:

  • -adjustments to the weapon wheel to lower its sensitivity and prevent the ability to spam it.
  • -collision adjusted in “national guard” and “underground mars” areas to help prevent falling into out of bound areas.
  • -cargo door elevator door on admin floor adjusted to prevent getting locked onto that floor if players leaves door after using it.
  • -admin firewing adjusted to prevent objective getting reset to an earlier point in the game.
  • -text added to health bar to inform player wether they are standing, crouching or crawling.
  • -subtitles not showing up during parts when using radio fixed.
  • -agility test tutorial level can be skipped by interacting with door behind where player spawns.
  • -invisible enemies tweaked.
  • -end of office area unloading but not locking doors fixed.
  • -jaws of life battery added to light prison area to prevent getting locked into area.
  • -adjustments to spawned enemies after saving the NPC Jonathan.

That seems to be it. Hopefully, we can get a proper changelog released soon, and once we do, we’ll update the article to reflect it. That said, we’re not counting on it given TeamKill is a four-man studio and nowhere near a AAA development house.

If you’re not familiar with the game or the weapon wheel issues, go read our review of the game here, where we said the following concerning the weapon wheel: “One of the biggest issues in the game though is how completely broken the tool and weapon wheels are to use when selecting them. By holding down left or right on the d-pad, you will bring up the tools and weapons wheels respectively, and can then use the right analog stick to select your tool or weapon or choice. The major problem here though is that this doesn’t even work half of the time. I cannot count the number of times I had the right analog stick hover over the shotgun and the wheel very clearly shows that I have the shotgun selected and it randomly pulls out a completely different weapon that isn’t always right next to it on the wheel.”

Battlefield 2042 Re-Review in 2023 – Figuring It Out

When Battlefield 2042 was released back in November of 2021, our review of DICE’s latest entry in the shooter franchise wasn’t really nice to the game due to a lot of factors. Mostly it had to do with the Specialists system that added a layer of unneeded complication to the game, as well as the lack of content, bugs and the list goes on.

However, after close to 24 months, DICE seems to finally have struck gold, as Season 6’s launch — coupled with the free game trial — elevated the game’s player base numbers to new all-time highs. With this in mind, and factoring in the past improvements made by the studio, we’ve decided to re-review Battlefield 2042 given the shooter’s resurgence and vast overhaul.

What’s Old Is New Again

In case you haven’t been keeping tabs on BF2042, DICE has made great strides to basically undo most of the new stuff they introduced in the game to make it feel like a more traditional Battlefield experience. While Specialists are still part of the game, they have been re-jigged to make them fit your traditional Battlefield class. Sure, they still have their base abilities, but DICE grouped them up and gave them class-based skills in order to have defined roles on what they can do on the battlefield, and thankfully, it worked.

Battlefield 2042 Update 1.38

Now, while I still much prefer your standard class, this is definitely a step in the right direction. Now, you won’t get confused what your teammate can do, and what your enemy is capable of as well. For the most part, you see Falck, you know you’ll get a proper healer. See Blasco or Paik on your team? Expect spawn beacons and the sort.

This class overhaul makes gameplay more streamlined, and helps aid in the teamplay aspect of Battlefield 2042 — something that was lacking when the game first got released. In addition to that, there are other small changes and additions made to make the game feel like your traditional Battlefield title. While one can argue that these things shouldn’t have been missing in the first place, it is what it is, and I’m glad we at least have these available in the game now.

Communication Is Key

With DICE not exactly striking gold on the onset with Battlefield 2042, one major thing the studio worked on was communication. The community managers, devs talked about the game’s shortcomings, upcoming changes, what feedback the community had, and what the studio was planning to do about it.

Sure, you might not like some of the changes, the content flow might not be enough, but at the very least, DICE was communicating with the playerbase. Sometimes they’d answer Reddit queries (not a small feat given how toxic the Battlefield community can sometimes be), or maybe discuss upcoming changes on Twitter, or they’d talk about stuff in one of the many Inside Battlefield podcasts and blog posts players got regularly.

Slowly but surely, BF2042 was turning around in key aspects. From classes, overpowered vehicles and weapons, map sizes and the like, DICE tweaked and tweaked until players had less and less things to complain about. Heck, one can argue now that most of the people saying “Battlefield 2042 is dead” or something similar, are those people who don’t even care to play it in the first place.

Battlefield 2042 Steam and EA App Issues

Season 6 and Redacted

Things took a huge turn when Season 6 launched in October. EA wisely paired that with a free weekend trial offer, and boom! The game soared. If you’re wondering why this happened in Season 6 and not in previous seasons, I’d wager it’s because of the new map introduced in the new season called Redacted.

While we still haven’t seen fan-favorite close-quarter combat maps like Operation Metro, Operation Locker, we do have Redacted. It’s a lot smaller compared to other BF2042 maps, and it’s for infantry only. This was the catalyst for people to jump in, not get annoyed and overwhelmed by vehicles, and just grind out guns, get kills and go crazy.

Remember those Operation Metro 24/7 playlists that people played nonstop before (or hated)? Yeah, Redacted feels like that. Now, while some hate this “meat grinder” type of skirmishes in Battlefield, evidently a ton of people love it. There’s no other evidence needed other than the playerbase rising during the free trial period and sticking with the game even after it’s over. Hop on the game now, go play the Redacted 24/7 playlist and you’ll see how fast it is to get into a match with real people regardless of the time of day. I’ve poured in hours replaying Redacted, and I honestly see why people are sticking around. Battlefield 2042 in small, infantry-only maps is good fun.

Tempering Expectations

With all the good stuff DICE has managed to do with Battlefield 2042 in roughly two years’ time, I must admit, players should keep their expectations in check. For one thing, we’re not sure whether we’ll be getting another season after Season 6, and EA hasn’t said anything or even hinted at it.

Battlefield 2042 Season 6: Dark Creations Starts

So, while the playerbase is at an all-time high now, those same players should be ready to accept that we might not be getting any significant new content in the near future. I really hope I’m wrong of course, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is it for the game’s post-launch support. I mean, with the game flopping at launch, people expected EA to just pull the plug, complete its promised slate of post-release content and then move on. The publisher — and DICE — went beyond that with Season 6. And with DICE and the rest of EA firmly in the trenches in developing a new full-fledged Battlefield game, they might need all hands on deck for that one.

I would really love to be wrong, and see Season 7 announced. Imagine if EA announces Season 7 and we get another close-quarters map like Op Metro or Op Locker? Yeah, that would certainly make people continue playing it, no? But alas, I do not know where EA is going, and I wouldn’t be shocked if this is it for the game in terms of new content. If it is, at least it’s ending on a high note, which is a good motivator for DICE to understand what they need to do for the next game in the franchise.

In addition to new content being somewhat of a mystery, players should also bear in mind that while DICE did shake up the Specialist system to integrate classes, made maps tighter for more action and so on, there are still issues with BF2042 from a gameplay standpoint that we won’t see resolved at all…this is something the current players and would-be players of the game should understand and accept.

Portal to Nowhere

For all the great strides DICE has made with BF2042, the same can’t be said for Battlefield Portal. Sure, there are new guns added to it from time to time, but for the most part, the mode is a disappointment, and it still feels that way even to this day.

The concept of playing on any Battlefield map from any Battlefield game, using different weapons from various entries in the franchise sounded like a dream come true on paper, but in realty, it lacked support, it felt half baked, and didn’t really go anywhere.

While DICE isn’t the developer behind Battlefield Portal (it’s handled by EA’s Ripple Effect Studios), it’s still something worth mentioning given it is part of the game after all. I suspect Ripple Effect is deep into the new Battlefield game’s development, and this is the reason why BF Portal seems to have been forgotten. Well, we can’t have everything, can we?

Battlefield 2042 Next Update 6.1.0

Fire in the Hole!

At the end of the day, the big question here is: is Battlefield 2042 worth playing now? I think I can safely say that’s a yes — especially if you’re a Battlefield vet that got turned off with the Specialists system and whatnot they introduced when the game launched.

Just remember before buying that BF2042 might not be getting any new content, and you’re good to go. Even if that’s the case, though, you should be getting your money’s worth (given it’s not at full price these days) just by grinding out the multiplayer, trying out the new classes, testing the new weapons, and just generally having a good Battlefield time.

If you can get past that idea, then you really ought to jump into Battlefield 2042 now, especially at its discounted price across digital storefronts. Who knows? EA might surprise us by announcing Season 7, given the game’s re-emergence.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • Specialists have been tweaked to act more like traditional Battlefield classes
  • Redacted is a load of fun and offers tight infantry gameplay
  • The lack of content issue isn’t really an issue anymore
  • All the new maps since launch have fixed issues players had with launch maps. Better coverage, layouts, etc, with Redacted being the best so far.

Cons:

  • Might not be getting support after Season 6
  • Previous problems (like Specialist abilities) are still there
  • BF Portal remains an afterthought and is still underwhelming
  • No server browser for All-Out Warfare still.

Modern Warfare 3 Challenges Explained: Daily and Weekly Challenges, Career Challenges, and Armory Challenges Detailed

Wondering how you’ll earn XP in Modern Warfare 3? The latest Call of Duty blog post gives us some insight on how Modern Warfare 3 challenges will work, including both daily and weekly challenges, career challenges, and armory challenges. These will help you unlock new weapons, which in turn will grant you access to more of the hundreds of new camos coming to the game.

Here are the different challenge types as listed on the COD Blog:

Modern Warfare 3 Challenges Explained

Daily Challenges

Available in Multiplayer, Zombies, as well as in Call of Duty: Warzone at its launch, Daily Challenges are a set of three challenges that reset on a fixed schedule — see the in-game timer for details on how long you have to complete them. In Multiplayer, the three Daily Challenges are from three distinct categories:

  • A general challenge that may not require much change in playstyle (e.g., get 7 headshots).
  • A weapon challenge that focuses on a specific weapon category (e.g., get 5 headshots with LMGs)
  • A special challenge that encourages exploration with specific conditions, Equipment, or Field Upgrades, (e.g., provide Ammo Resupplies to 5 players).

Career Challenges

In addition to Daily Challenges, expect an assortment of Multiplayer and Modern Warfare Zombies Career Challenges at launch. Some of these, such as match wins and kills, will come naturally by simply playing the game. Others, such as earning kills with a specific weapon category or the use of Equipment may involve changing your playstyle.

Career Challenges have several milestone steps, which award XP. You can even continue pushing to fully complete a Career Challenge, which offers additional XP and a Calling Card. Once Season 1 (and future seasons) become available, expect additional challenges unlocked at Prestige Level milestones that offer more difficult objectives and XP rewards. Expect intel on the Prestige system closer to Season 1.

Weekly Challenges

Every week during the Pre-Season, and during each Season, a new set of Challenges become available. At launch, expect there to be seven Multiplayer and seven Zombies Weekly Challenges available every week. Expect something similar when Warzone launches with Season 1.

Every Weekly Challenge awards XP on completion. If you complete five Weekly Challenges for a week, you will unlock a special attachment (Aftermarket Part) or a weapon as a weekly reward. If you earn all Weekly Rewards in a Season, you unlock a Seasonal Cosmetic reward (a Camo, for example).

Armory Unlock Challenges

Armory Unlock Challenges are a new system that lets you unlock the Weapons, Equipment, Perks, Killstreaks, and Attachments that you want to utilize. This includes many attachments unlocked through Weapon Progression. When you reach Level 25, expect to unlock the Armory Unlock Challenge System, and begin to progress and complete challenges, unlocking new items. There are a variety of items you can earn through Armory Unlock Challenges, which you can view in the Armory Unlocks Challenge Menu.

Armory Unlock Challenges are completed by Completing Daily Challenges. Each Daily Challenge completed earns you a point against your active Armory Unlock Challenge. While you can continue to earn Armory Unlocks in order, you can also “Activate” any valid item. This will now be your Active Armory Unlock Challenge, and you will begin to earn points against it as you complete Daily and Bonus Challenges.

If you complete all your Daily Challenges, you unlock a Bonus Challenge that is unique to each game. Bonus Challenges can be completed infinitely: in Multiplayer, they require winning a match, in Zombies, they require completing Contracts. If you change your mind mid-completion, don’t worry – progress against Armory Unlock Challenges is saved when you Activate a new Challenge.

Remember: If you see an item you want at the end of a Weapon’s Progression, then check the Challenges menu; you might be able to unlock it with an Armory Unlock Challenge!

That sums up Modern Warfare 3 challenges. You might have an easier time completing them if you know what guns you want to bring into each match. You can check out the complete list of new guns in MW3 here.

Modern Warfare 3 will be available this November 10 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The campaign is now out as part of early access if you pre-order the game.

Risk of Rain 2 DLC Teased With Mysterious New Update

A new Risk of Rain 2 update just dropped that has the community trying to figure out what it does, as mysterious lights have begun showing up in the game, with a new DLC popping up on Steam.

Risk of Rain 2 Update 7.5 just dropped on PC, along with the patch notes, though looking at those notes, you’ll notice something very strange.

What appears to be falling comets. It doesn’t tell us much, but upon booting into Risk of Rain 2, there are now mysterious orbs of light that seemingly get closer as you progress through each stage as pointed out by X user @DragonRollZ

What’s more, a new DLC page for Risk of Rain 2 has also surfaced, with it simply named “Risk of Rain 2 – EXXXXXXX-X.” Its description doesn’t offer much, though this line specifically “1:19:9:7:14:1:12:6:18:15:13:4:5:5:16:23:9:20:8:9:14” decodes to “ASIGNALFROMDEEPWITHIN.”

The official Risk of Rain X account also tweeted a video of this phenomenon.

What does it all mean? Well, the DLC page lists November 8, 2057, in its description. Putting the year aside, Risk of Rain Return, the Risk of Rain Remake launches the same day, with a developer stream also happening to celebrate it. That announcement also came with a tease at the end of the post, saying that Risk of Rain 2 won’t want to miss out on the showcase.

Could we have a Risk of Rain 2 Expansion 2 announcement this Wednesday? I guess we’ll find out real soon!

Modern Warfare 3 Camos Revealed: Base and Mastery Camos for Multiplayer and Zombies Showcased

Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer and zombies modes launch in just a few days. Leading up to release, Activision has shared how the Modern Warfare 3 Camos will work and even showcased the game’s brand-new mastery camos available for unlocking in both multiplayer and zombies.

Let’s not waste any more time. Here’s the rundown:

Modern Warfare 3 Camos Explained

As with Modern Warfare II, you can change your weapon’s cosmetic appearance by adding a Camo, a Gun Screen, a Charm, a Decal, and up to three Stickers to your weapon. The rest of this article focuses on the hundreds of Camos available to unlock at launch in Modern Warfare III.

First, let’s confirm the new sets of Weapon Camos in Modern Warfare III:

Base Camos (MP, MWZ)

Modern Warfare III introduces a magnificent selection of additional Weapon Camos for you to unlock, and all the Base camos – from either game – can be applied to any weapon in MWIII.

Brand New Camo Sets:

There are 18 different sets of Modern Warfare III Weapon Camos (which you unlock by playing Multiplayer and Zombies with MWIII weaponry). Confirmed Sets are:

  • Poison Frogs
  • Graphical
  • Topographic
  • Glittery Flats
  • Retro
  • Neapolitan
  • Under the Microscope
  • High Contrast
  • Wavelength
  • Two Tone Brushstrokes
  • Perfect Symmetry
  • Psychedelics
  • Blur
  • Bold
  • Butterfly
  • Puzzle
  • Skeletal
  • Glitch Milspec

Existing MP Camo sets carry forward from MWII (which you unlocked, or can continue to unlock in MWIII, using MWII weapons). Plus, expect to double each MWII set of camos with new variants of existing Camo sets from MWII, which you unlock playing Zombies in MWIII with MWII weaponry. Confirmed returning sets are:

  • Spray Paint
  • Woodland
  • Digital
  • Dragon
  • Geometric
  • Fun
  • Foliage
  • Skulls
  • Tiger
  • Stripes
  • Reptile
  • Solid Colors
  • Classic
  • Cliffside

Here are some images that Activision shared of several base camos coming to Modern Warfare 3:

Completionist Camos (MP, MWZ, Mastery)

Modern Warfare III also introduces a total of 12 additional Completionist Camos to unlock (in three sets of four) as well as the four Completionist Camos from MWII. These have rules regarding which weapon they can be applied to, and sets of unlock criteria. Before we detail the full complement of camos on offer, here are the confirmed Completionist Camos:

  • Multiplayer: Carry Forward – Modern Warfare II Weapons: Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, Orion
  • Multiplayer – Modern Warfare III Weapons: Gilded, Forged, Priceless, Interstellar
  • Zombies – Modern Warfare II Weapons: Golden Ivory, Spinel Husk, Arachnida, Bioluminescent
  • Zombies – Modern Warfare III Weapons: Golden Enigma, Zircon Scale, Serpentinite, Borealis

Here’s a look at each of the confirmed Completionist Camos:

MWII Carry Forward Camos

With the exception of the MWII Completionist Camos (Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion), every MWII Base Weapon Camo can be applied to any weapon in MWIII, no matter which game the weapon or Camo originated in. That means you can place a MWII base Camo onto a MWIII weapon, and vice versa, assuming weapon and Camo have been unlocked.

Let’s assume you’ve unlocked some or all of the following M4 AR Camos in MWII:

  • Specific Camos – The four specific M4 Camo Unlocks (Scales, Desert Hybrid, Dark Leaves, and New Urban).
  • Completionist Camos – The four M4 Mastery Camos that are also available for every MWII weapon (Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion).
  • Weapon Mastery – The Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion Mastery (Emblems and Calling Cards for each), and the Completionist Charm.

In this example, any and all unlocked content is Carried Forward into Modern Warfare III. Any content you haven’t unlocked becomes available to unlock within MWIII as well, so you can effectively continue your MWII grind into MWIII. All Camo Challenges carry over from MWII to MWIII, so, for example, you still need to “Get 15 Kills from behind with the M4” to unlock the New Urban Camo (which, once unlocked, can be applied to the M4, or any other weapon from MWII or MWIII).

MWIII Multiplayer Camos

Just like the MWII Multiplayer Weapon Camos, every MWIII weapon has up to four individual base Camos, all brand-new to MWIII, and each requires unlock challenges to obtain. In MWII, the base Camo challenges were relatively similar across the different weapon types. In MWIII, Base Camo challenges are unique to each weapon category. For example, individual SMGs will have a different set of base challenges compared to individual Shotguns, LMGs, and so on. This promotes variety in gameplay, and the challenges have been honed to better suit the playstyle of each weapon type.

Let’s explore this by leveling up the MCW, one of the new MWIII Assault Rifles:

MCW Mastery Camos – As well as four specific Zombie Camos (detailed below), there are four MCW MP-related Base Camo Unlocks (Razor Feather, Skullflagration, Abyssal Fox, Menelaus Blue).
MCW Mastery Camos Unlock Criteria – Each of the four MCW Mastery Camos requires you to complete a Level challenge (e.g., “get the MCW to Level 12), as well as a Multiplayer-specific challenge (e.g., “Get 50 Kills while ADS with the MCW”).
Completionist Camos for MWIII Weapons – There are four additional brand-new Completionist Camos (Gilded, Forged, Priceless, Interstellar).
Weapon Mastery – The Gilded, Forged, Priceless, and Interstellar Camos also have Weapon Mastery challenges, allowing you to claim Emblems and Calling Cards for each, as well as the Completionist Charm.

MWII Zombies Camos

The Camo Challenges are only just getting started: Get ready for the biggest Zombies Camo grind of all time! Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch have added an entirely new set of Camo Challenges in Modern Warfare III, related to both MWII and MWIII weaponry.

Whether you’re unlocking a MWII weapon for the first time, or you’ve claimed Multiplayer Weapon Mastery for every one of the 77 MWII weapons, you still have a sizeable challenge thanks to an incredible amount of Zombies Camo content across every available weapon in the game.

Let’s return to the M4 from MWII:

  • Specific Zombie Camos – As well as the four specific MP Camos (that can be unlocked in either game), there are four additional M4 Zombie Camo Unlocks (Rancid Venom, Dark Mist, Nightmare, and Fertilizer).
  • Specific Zombie Camos Unlock Criteria – For each of the four Zombie Camos specific to the M4, you need to complete a level challenge (e.g., “get the M4 to Level 19”, which you’re likely to have already completed if you leveled up the weapon previously), as well as a Zombies-specific challenge (e.g., “In Zombies, get 5 Mimic kills with the M4”).
  • Completionist Zombies Camos for MWII Weapons – There are four brand-new Completionist Camos as well (Golden Ivory, Spinel Husk, Arachnida, Bioluminescent). The unlock criteria for these is the same across all MWII weaponry, and is detailed below.
  • Weapon Mastery – The Golden Ivory, Spinel Husk, Arachnida, and Bioluminescent Mastery also have Weapon Mastery challenges, allowing you to claim Emblems and Calling Cards for each, as well as the Completionist Charm.

MWIII Zombies Camos

Just like the MWIII Multiplayer Weapon Camos, every MWIII weapon also has up to four individual Zombie Camos, all brand-new to MWIII and each requiring unlock challenges to obtain. Let’s explore this by leveling up the MCW, one of the new MWIII Assault Rifles:

Specific Zombie Camos – As well as the four specific MP Camos, there are four MCW Zombie Camo Unlocks (Wyvern, Vehement Rage, Tempest Shards, Toxic Spots).
Specific Zombie Camos Unlock Criteria – For each of the four Zombie Camos specific to the MCW, you need to complete a level challenge (e.g., “get the MCW to Level 19), as well as a Zombies-specific challenge (e.g., “In Zombies, get 250 Hipfire Kills with the MCW”).
Completionist Zombies Camos for MWIII Weapons – There are four additional brand-new Completionist Camos (Golden Enigma, Zircon Scale, Serpentinite, Borealis). The unlock criteria for these is detailed below.
Weapon Mastery – The Golden Enigma, Zircon Scale, Serpentinite, and Borealis Camos also have Weapon Mastery challenges, allowing you to claim Emblems and Calling Cards for each, as well as the Completionist Charm.

PlayStation Removing Twitter/X Integration for PS4 and PS5 on November 13

If you were in the habit of tweeting directly from your PS4 or PS5 or sharing content from your console to Twitter/X, it might be time to move on. A new announcement from PlayStation states that Twitter/X integration is getting removed from the platforms on November 13.

This announcement was shared directly on PS5 systems earlier today.

Image

The announcement reads as follows:

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO PLAYSTATION COMMUNITIES ON YOUR PS5 CONSOLE

As of November 13, 2023, integration with X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer function on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles. This includes the ability to view any content published on X on PS5/PS4, and the ability to post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 (or link an X account to do so). For details on how to share game captures from PS5, click the button below.

If you’re concerned about being able to share your PlayStation clips and images online, worry not: you’ll still be able to send your captures to the PS App and post them from your mobile device. Still, it adds an extra step to what was a fairly straightforward process.

Are you upset to see Twitter/X integration go? Let us know.

As one PlayStation connection ends, another one begins, as Sony looks to acquire iSIZE to improve their video and cloud streaming services. You can read about that here.

Thanks, Wario64!

Discord Down With Messages Not Pushing Through This November 6 (Update)

It looks like every gamer’s favorite communication tool is having issues, as Discord down reports have surfaced this November 6, and the company has acknowledged it as well.

Discord Down With Message Issues This Nov. 6:

Update: All systems operational per Discord, and here’s the official message.

Resolved – Traffic and latency are fully restored, Discord is fully operational.

The underlying issue was due to an operation we performed on our authentication database cluster which resulted in too much reduced capacity in the database cluster. We performed some load shedding to enable some traffic to recover, but due to the nature of this cluster’s topology and the incident, only about 50% of our userbase was able to get back online in the interim and we had to wait for the maintenance to complete on the impacted database nodes before we were able to fully restore the service.

We’ll be following up internally with a postmortem and will plan to publish a public blog post describing the incident and our followups to ensure that this issue cannot recur. Our goal is that Discord just works when you need it; we know many of you (and all of us!) rely on Discord. Please accept our apologies and thank you for your patience today as we worked through this incident.

Downdetector has reported a massive uptick of queries from people just now:

Screenshot

The official Discord Status page has also acknowledged the outage.

Investigating – We are aware of an issue impacting Discord latency and errors. The team is online and investigating now.

Same as always, once we know more about this, we’ll update the article. If you can somehow send and receive messages normally. leave a comment below where you’re messaging from and which platform as well. We can confirm that both mobile and desktop versions are having issues.

Xbox Announces Multi-Year Partnership With Inworld AI to Bring AI to Games

Xbox announced this morning that they have signed a multi-year partnership with Inworld AI to bring generative AI to video games. The company hopes to create narrative and dialogue-focused tools using AI to enhance the gaming experience in future titles.

With Inworld AI’s help, Xbox is looking to implement a toolset that will allow game developers to create more advanced dialogue and storytelling features in their games. The toolset’s two main features are an AI “design copilot” that will provide suggestions and guidance during the game creation process itself. The other tool is an AI character runtime engine that handles the dynamic generation of quests, dialogue, story paths, and the like.

Haiyan Zhang, the General Manager of Gaming AI at Xbox, also commented on Xbox’s plans to support all sorts of studios in this endeavor:

As with all creators tools we make at Xbox, our goal is to deliver state-of-the-art AI tools for game developers of any size, anywhere in the world and on every platform where players want to play. We want to help make it easier for developers to realize their visions, try new things, push the boundaries of gaming today and experiment to improve gameplay, player connection and more. We will collaborate and innovate with game creators inside Xbox studios as well as third-party studios as we develop the tools that meet their needs and inspire new possibilities for future games.

Inworld AI is a fairly new AI company. On their website, they boast a founding team whose previous accomplishments include API.AI, which is now Google’s Dialogflow, an incredibly popular conversational AI platform. Additionally, they claim to have put together a masterful team of experienced “engineers, designers, inventors, creatives, scientists, and technologists,” all of whom are seasoned experts in their respective fields.

We’ve seen several smaller developers begin experimenting with AI like language learning models in their games, but Xbox has the potential to scale these experiences to a much greater level. With a proper budget and a well-developed toolset, AI in gaming could become seriously polished and provide a very unique yet fulfilling experience for every player.

Does the potential for AI in gaming excite you or concern you? Let us know down in the comments.

This partnership with Inworld is likely a part of Xbox’s larger structure shake-ups that have occurred lately, the most recent of which being Sarah Bond’s promotion to Xbox President. You can read all about those here.

Embracer Group’s COO Steps Down to Form Strunke Games

More trouble at Embracer Group is brewing, as it has been revealed that the Chief Operating Officer (COO) has left the company to form his own studio.

Egil Strunke, who’s been COO of Embracer Group for the last four years, announced that he had left the company last week. In a posting on his LinkedIn account, Strunke shares some mixed feelings about leaving Embracer, saying he’s been grateful for his time there while saddened that he’s leaving all the amazing folks he’s worked with there. And though the market has been rough recently, with Embracer’s studios being hit with layoffs, and the company outlining restricting plans, Strunke believes Embracer will come out of this stronger.

“I’ve reached a checkpoint and it’s time to embark on a new mission!

Last week I left Embracer Group as COO, and it’s with mixed feelings I am parting ways this global company phenomenon, rooted in Karlstad, Sweden. On one hand grateful for having had the chance to work with the one-of-a-kind Lars Wingefors and all the other AMAZING colleagues (too many to mention!) which I will be sad to leave. On the other hand excited about the opportunities that lie ahead – starting and building my own company: Strunke Games.

My history with the group spans across two four-year stints, first 2011-14 – the early foundational days with acquiring assets from Jowood and THQ and planting the seeds to what we then didn’t know would become Embracer Group. Then returning 2019 to a sizzling, acquisitional hotbed where new entrepreneurs and exciting studios were added quarter by quarter. Growing employees 14x to 16.500 and revenue 8x to circa 40 billion SEK in four years has been an amazing experience and adventure. Although the last year has been rough, in line with general market changes and industry consolidation, I am positive that Embracer will come out stronger and with a long, bright future ahead of them.”

Strunke looks to the future as an entrepreneur with Strunke Games, outlining goals for the new studio.

“So now it’s time to become an entrepreneur (again). The goal of Strunke Games is to support and be involved in some of the most interesting gaming studios, companies and projects around the globe as the games industry continues its constant change.

I’m open to discuss all kind of consultancy assignments; strategy, scaling up/down, creating new business opportunities, utilizing my network, interim management roles, studio/game project evaluation/DD, investment opportunities, board or advisory function, mentor-/leadership and more. I have a broad skillset and experience and like to consider myself somewhat of a “Swedish army knife”.

We wish Strunke the best of luck in his future endeavors, as we do for Embracer Group.

EA UFC 5 Update 1.002.009 Rolls Out This November 6 (Update)

EA UFC 5 update 1.002.009 is now out on all platforms this November 6, and this is a pretty small download. Unfortunately, don’t expect any major changes to the gameplay from this patch per the devs.

EA UFC 5 Update 1.002.009 Patch Notes for November 6:

Size: 240MB (PS5)

Update: EA has released the official changelog, and as expected, it’s not much (via the official EA UFC Twitter):

Stability Fixes:
🔘 Main Menu – Sometimes title hangs in Main Menu
🔘 XB Only – Rare MCR online crash

Fix for a rare instance of Pre-Order/Alter Ego fighters being locked for users

First the bad news: EA has confirmed via the game’s Discord that there are NO gameplay updates in the patch, and this was mostly done to fix the locked pre-order and alter ego fighters.

This was confirmed by EA_HeySteveDave from the official EA UFC Discord server:

In the same Discord server, EA_HeySteveDave confirmed that there are no gameplay-related changes in the update, though the game’s first patch that will have that is incoming sometime later this month, and will be a server-side patch.

While there’s no date for the gameplay update just yet, at the very least, players now know it’s incoming, and you don’t even need to download anything for it to take effect. Once it’s live, even if it’s a server-side update, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

If you’re curious what we thought of the game, go read our review of it here, where we state, “The EA Sports UFC series has certainly been one of their most consistent quality-wise, and EA Sports UFC 5 continues that trend. Career mode is still the core of the experience as you climb the ladder to the top, and Fight Week has a lot of potential once it launches, though how good that actually is remains to be seen.”

Epic Games Set to Return to Court as Antitrust Trial Against Google Begins Today

The folks behind Fortnite seem to love the legal system. After starting a fight with Apple more than three years ago, Epic Games is now taking on Google over their decision to remove Fortnite from the Google Play store following Epic’s attempts to circumvent the store’s payment system.

For those entirely unfamiliar with this saga, allow us to give you a quick recap. In 2020, Epic Games updated the mobile version of Fortnite to allow players to purchase V-Bucks directly in-game. This was in an attempt to make the prices on V-Bucks cheaper, as Google takes a 30% cut of any transactions completed on their platform. In response to this update, Google removed Fortnite from the Google Play store entirely.

Shortly thereafter, Epic Games filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, claiming that Google’s practices were not consumer-friendly and that they actively prevented healthy competition. Google responded with a countersuit claiming that Epic had breached its contract with the Google Play store.

The trial has been a long time coming, largely due to Epic being preoccupied in court against Apple for the same reasons. That case ended mostly unwell for them, as Apple won on nine out of ten counts. Since then, Fortnite has yet to return to either the App Store or the Google Play store, but that could always change if this case against Google swings the way Epic wants it to.

According to a report from Seeking Alpha, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney is expected to testify, as well as Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The case begins this morning, and while Epic is not looking for any sort of compensation, they are hoping to force Google to change their store policies. This trial is sure to be in the news for a good while, so we’ll be sure to keep our readers posted on anything significant that comes from it.

In other news, Epic’s likely to fund their legal efforts with all the revenue they’re making from the nearly 45 million players enjoying the Fortnite OG season. You can read about those numbers and Epic’s response to the immense player count here.

The Finals Open Beta Player Count Reached an Astounding 7.5 Million Participants

Despite not having a release date, it seems that the free-to-play arena shooter, The Finals, has managed to be quite the hit, as Embark has announced that The Finals Open Beta player count has achieved 7.5 million players during the last two weeks.

The Finals Open Beta has ended, and with it, millions of contestants say goodbye to Embark’s ambitious free-to-play arena-based shooter. But it’s not forever, as the folks over at Embark have now begun working on improvements and fixes based on all the feedback they’ve gathered in the last two weeks. And though they expected this open beta to draw a lot of attention, it seems that the turnout for it was bigger than anticipated, as The Finals Open Beta player count reached (total, not concurrent) a staggering 7.5 million across all platforms.

“The Open Beta has come to an end! An unforgettable week for us — a whopping 7.5 MILLION contestants entered the arena! Now it’s time for us to hunker down and get back to work on all the fixes and improvements you helped us identify. GG and until next time!” Embark said on X.

A successful open beta indeed, with Steam Charts indicating that it had over 120,000 players on average daily on PC alone, with an all-time concurrent high of 264,874.

Impressive numbers indeed, though with a large turnout, it also meant that it had attracted the unwanted audience of cheaters. How Embark plans to address that isn’t known, but hopefully, it’s feedback they’ve managed to gather during the open beta test. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The Finals is planned to be released for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Let’s hope a release date is around the corner, as I’m sure everyone is anxious to get back in.

In the meantime, what was your favorite thing about the beta? Have any big moments from it you’d like to share? Let us know!
