Battlefield 1 Multiplayer Review – DICE’s Gamble To Return To The Past Pays Off

There’s no doubt about it. Today’s triple-A shooters are growing stale as developers more often than not rely on two periods of time to set their games in, be it the modern era or the future war. As of the mid-2000’s, whether it’s Call of Duty or Halo, if you’ve played one game, you’ve played them all. As we skip forward into the latter half of the 2010’s, gamers are craving something else and it’s about time for a change.

DICE Stockholm, while having delivered some our favorite console and PC shooters of the past decade, is no less responsible for the trend than any other developer. That’s why we were more than intrigued to learn that the studio’s next big project would shift focus to one of the most vicious wars ever, War World I. Aptly named, Battlefield 1 is a gamble, but is it what it’s going to take to freshen up the shooter scene and will it pay off?

BF1

It’ll be interesting to see where shooters might head to next and if Battlefield 1 will have any impact, but for now, DICE’s latest project breathes new life into a genre by simply making what was once old feel new again.

Despite taking place in the early 1900’s, Battlefield 1 still finds ways to introduce new ideas while still fitting the theme perfectly. For starters, one of the new game modes “War Pigeons” is an infantry-only game type about as far fetched as it sounds. Players must gun each other down while hunting for a pigeon that will carry a written letter to home base for support. As you hold the pigeon and begin to write, you’ll be highlighted on the map every few seconds, tipping the enemy team off to your location. Even if you manage to finish writing amidst the chaos, the enemy team can still deny you a point by shooting the bird down mid-flight. Escaping safely will land your team support from artillery teams. Why you’re writing to your infantry pals and not home to your mother is beyond me, however.

BF1

While War Pigeons is a worthy new addition to the series’ age-old formula, the game also combines the best aspects of modes like Conquest and Rush to make something else entirely new.

It’s called Operations and it is the best thing to happen to Battlefield in a long time. The mode mixes the point capture system of Conquest with the ticket system and progression of Rush and is the closest the series has ever gotten to delivering a true all-encompassing game type full of epic battles every time. Games are massive and span a series of levels or maps that depict actual battles from WWI.

Attackers have three battalions of 150 tickets each to overtake a section of map. Losing a battalion grants the attacking team access to the behemoth vehicles, which are meant to offer a helping hand to struggling teams. They vary in appearance from a massive air ship to a giant battleship or an armored train and offer a ton of fire power, requiring the opposing team to concentrate their resources to take out. They make an appearance in other modes as well and help to provide some variety in gameplay. They are also more-or-less are a replacement for the big fancy Levolution events introduced in Battlefield 4.

Speaking of new vehicles, my favorite one so far is without a doubt the horse. The horse can be used to ride in and out of battle and is more powerful than you might believe, able to withstanding anti-tank rounds at times and allowing you to dice up enemy squadrons with your melee attack. Flying is, of course, also back and better than ever with a more realistic damage model and less lock-on trickery from some of the more recent games.

BF1

In addition to the two new game modes, Battlefield 1 also delivers tried-and-true classics like TDM and Domination, alongside Conquest and Rush. While veterans will know what to expect from them, the drastically different atmospheres of the era that have been remarkably captured in DICE’s Frostbite engine will open your eyes to a whole new war. All nine vanilla maps look fantastic.

Argonne Forest is a real stand-out with its lush forest and sections that have been torn apart by the war. One of my personal favorites is Ballroom Blitz where both opposing forces fight over a beautiful French Chateau. It may also be the game’s very own Operation Metro, if you catch my drift, as there’s never a dull moment. The ballroom quickly fills with empty bullet casings and deadly gas from the frequent battles that partake here.

Overall, Battlefield’s 1 map selection may very well be some one of the best to-date. I don’t find the urge to skip any maps in a rotation, aside from Sinai Desert, perhaps. Personally, I feel that the map’s layout is a bit dull and originally put me off on playing the beta.

As mentioned earlier, Levolution is gone and, instead, structures can be destroyed much more realistically and the terrain can even be deformed with high-explosives. It harkens back to the golden age of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 when maps ended up looking drastically different at the end of a match versus the start of one.

BF1

Despite Battlefield 1’s focus on such an early setting, the choice of weapons and customization options can be a bit limiting and skins only unlock randomly through crates. (There’s also no character customization, so players looking to really personalize their soldier will be disappointed.) Weapon loadout choices also stray from the familiar path as players select from different loadout packages instead of individual attachments.

For instance, the Medic class only has five different guns, but each one comes in a different variant that alters the way the weapons is used. The Autoloading 8 is a semi-auto rifle that packs a punch, but the extended variant of the gun trades power for more bullets, tailoring it towards more close quarters engagements.

While the actual weapon count is much more focused than previous titles, each one demands a slightly higher learning curve as their recoil can be much harder to tame while aiming down sight. The majority of iron sights tend to get in your way and the lack of different optics doesn’t help much either. It may take some time for you to find your preferred firearm, too, as some of the starting guns aren’t exactly beginner-friendly like in past titles. But once you get used to it, things really starts to come together and kills are that much more rewarding because of it.

BF1

Breaking the curse of rough launches, Battlefield 1’s first few days out in the wild has been a pretty smooth ride when it comes to server issues and bugs. A few bugs here and there could be looked at, but I think DICE would do well to implement a few quality-of-life fixes.

One issue that sticks out is a no-brainer like Battlepacks being tied to progress instead of RNG. As it stands, the current system awards Battlepacks randomly at the end of a match to a select few players, regardless of how well they did. It means everyone has an equal chance, but it’d be nice to feel rewarded for your prowess.

I also think DICE desperately needs to add a firing range or some sort of practice modes into the game so players can get accustomed to different weapons and vehicles. It can be intimidating for newcomers who might be reluctant to try something new in fear of hindering the team. Vehicles aren’t plentiful, so I think everyone would feel a lot better if there were a chance to practice using them outside of combat. Even better: provide a tutorial for the Squad Leader mechanic as, currently, it doesn’t look like many people realize how many extra points can be earned by giving out commands in-game.

BF1

4.5 / 5

In my eyes, Battlefield 1 is definitely what the shooter genre needed right now. I think fans were looking for an out from the mundane and DICE’s latest project delivers just that while still crafting an experience that’s even more “Battlefield” than every before.

There may be a lack of diversity in weapon selection and customization options, but Battlefield 1 makes up for it in fun factor thanks to game modes like Operations, or even the ability to run around rampantly slicing and dicing through enemies while on a horse. It also doesn’t hurt that Battlefield 1 is easily the best looking multiplayer shooter to-date that still runs at 60FPS, or more on PC.

While the setting may not be as relatable, it delivers a level of immersion the series has yet to reach. If anything, a trip to the World War One era is more a chance for the team to focus the Battlefield experience to a more analog and skill-based affair than it is a lesson in history, which is fine by me.

Even if you’re not a fan of the series, Battlefield 1 is worth a try as it’s not quite like anything else out there at the moment.

This review is based on an Xbox One version of Battlefield 1 provided by EA.

Infinite Warfare’s Day One Update Will Tweak Weapons, Improve Matchmaking, & More – Full Details

Just under one week away from launch and developer Infinity Ward is sharing what changes the studio has made to their upcoming shooter based on feedback from recent multiplayer beta tests.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will launch with the following improvements on November 4, likely via a day one update. Some of the more notable tweaks include a fine-tuning of the shotgun and sniper weapon classes, as well changes to Scorestreaks and Rigs. The earn-rate of Salvage, used to build weapon variants, has also been increased and players will earn more Supply Drop Keys in round-based modes. Perhaps most importantly, improvements have also been made to matchmaking and dedicated servers.

Read on to get the specifics, which Infinity Ward posted on Reddit earlier today:

WEAPONS

We received a ton of great data from the Beta, allowing us to take a hard look at all of the guns and we will make changes as needed. Here are some of the immediate tweaks we will be implementing.

Shotguns

  • Increased the consistency of shotgun damage.
  • Shotgun damage at longer range has been increased.
  • Slightly increased the one shot kill range.
  • Both the Reaver and Banshee have received a slight bonus to their 1 trigger pull kill range.

Snipers

  • Bullet spread at the hip no longer gets smaller as the player ADS’s. Once the scope reaches the player’s eye, the bullet spread goes instantly to zero.
  • Sniper aim assist was reduced slightly for the KBS Longbow and the other bolt action snipers. Our turn rate while Aimed Down Sights is still slowed to help with precision aiming.
  • Sniper-class weapons no longer have any Aim Assist until the optic fully reaches the player’s eye.
  • For the ELO and Scout optics on snipers, the idle sway while ADS has been increased along with the player’s view bounce when moving. Because these optics are less zoomed in, the view bounce and the sway are felt less. These changes are to promote more stationary aiming and firing with these optics.
  • The Tracking Chip optic’s visuals have been improved.
  • Reduced bonus of the Quickdraw attachment on snipers.
  • Updated snipers to have more flinch when getting shot.

Launchers

  • The Howitzer Grenade launcher can now be fired from the hip instead of requiring full ADS

SMGs

  • The RPR Evo epic variant (Ripper) has had a tuning pass to increase recoil given its bonus fire rate

PERKS & RIG TRAITS

  • Marksman – We fixed a bug where, in addition to reducing flinch, it was also reducing recoil. This would then stack with Gun Perks and the Foregrip Attachment. This bonus reduction has been removed.
  • Momentum – Fixed issues with speed not being retained
  • Marked Target – The temporary red marker on the victim has been toned down

HEALTH REGEN AND SPAWNING

  • Health Regen time has been reduced.
  • Infusion bonus reduced.
  • Continuing to refine spawn system on beta maps, will assess remaining launch maps in live environment.

ECONOMY

  • Increased salvage gain in mission teams.
  • Changed currency value in supply drops.
  • Increased drop rate of keys in round-based modes.

SCORESTREAKS AND RIGS

Scorestreaks

  • AP-3X
    • Increased health, bullet damage, and weapon accuracy up close to help with target acquisition
  • RC-8
    • Increased health, increased weapon accuracy to help with target acquisition, slight increase in fire rate, and slight damage increase on splash damage
  • T.H.O.R
    • Increased speed of tracking rockets
    • Increase damage of both tracking and straight fire rockets
  • Bombardment
    • Slight decrease in both time to the initial drop and the time between each subsequent drop
    • Updated area damage to be consistent inner to outer

Rigs

  • Refining payload balance
  • Slight tweaks to gameplay balance across rigs

MODES

  • Defender: When carrying the Drone, the score-per-second bonus has been bumped from 5 score per second to 10 score per second. Scorestreak carrier bonus is unaffected.
  • Gun Game: Now features all classic weapons. In future updates, weapons with alternate functions will retain their state upon spawn.
  • Domination: When you step off a flag, the current capture bar progress starts to decay. The rate of this decay has been halved from the Beta. This allows players to hop off a flag to defend it and then get back on the flag with less progress loss

MATCHMAKING

  • Potential player evaluation was too strict. We were doing some very thorough testing of your connection to other players before placing you in a lobby with those players. This turned out to be a bit too thorough, and eventually was relaxed, leading to shorter matching times.
  • Incorrect geographic categorization. There was an issue in our geolocation system which was causing some players to be incorrectly categorized. This was also resolved during the beta, improving matchmaking times.
  • Dead lobby cleanup. The process which cleans up unused or dead lobby information from our back end was taking too long. This was causing a number of slowdowns when searching for a match.
  • The matchmaker was always quite good at generating new lobbies, but one thing we noticed was that queueing into a join in progress situation was taking much longer. This was due to some issues in the way we track information about the lobbies that are currently playing a match. These issues were also addressed during the beta, and sped up the join in progress case immensely.

TTK (TIME TO KILL / ENGAGEMENT)

  • We know a lot of you had different experiences with TTK during the Beta. With the above adjustments to dedicated servers, matchmaking, and weapon tuning, we think you’ll find that the TTK will be more balanced at launch, both on the attacking and receiving end. We’ll continue to monitor and balance throughout the year as need and would love your feedback in the process.
  • We’re always looking at TTK and will continue to balance and monitor

DEDICATED SERVERS

  • One of the major infrastructure changes we made this project was how dedicated server allocations work. We’re using a new load balancing system on the servers themselves, as well as pretty heavily changed how the game chooses a datacenter to use, and requests a dedicated server from that datacenter.
  • At the start of the Beta, you may have noticed some host migrations and some poorer quality matches. We discovered some issues where the new system was dropping our dedicated server utilization numbers way below target. After some tweaks and fixes we were able dramatically improve our dedicated server utilization for the second weekend and beyond.

EA Says No Season Pass For Titanfall 2, DLC Maps & Modes Will Be Free

Hours before the game’s official launch, Titanfall 2 developer Respawn Entertainment isn’t busy hyping fans up for ‘a great deal on all post-launch content’ for their upcoming triple-A shooter sequel.

Instead, the studio has announced that Titanfall 2 will not launch with the season pass at all. All post-launch maps and modes will be free for gamers on all platforms.

“This means no splitting up the community and it all starts with the legendary Angel City map, remastered from the original Titanfall,” the studio wrote on the game’s official website. “This means once you’ve purchased Titanfall 2, your investment includes a full single player campaign, the full multiplayer maps and modes, and long-term support with no hidden costs. You can pre-order the game to play 3 days early, but it will never cost you extra.”

Last March, Respawn made all downloadable content for Titanfall free to all gamers on Xbox One and PC. To this day, you get can get the original game and all of the maps and modes that were released for it for only the cost of the base game. Later that month, Respawn lead Vince Zampella mentioned that the studio was also considering keeping it that way for the sequel. Lucky for fans of the series, it looks it will indeed remain that way.

Titanfall 2 launches October 28 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

PlayStation 4 Pro Will Have Additional 1GB of Ram, 10% More Memory

Along with an upgraded CPU, the PlayStation Pro will also feature an extra 1GB of slow conventional RAM, offering developers access to more faster RAM.

According to an interview Mark Cerny did with IGN, the PS4 Pro will take that additional the slow 1GB of RAM for the operating System when it comes to operating games.

“He went on to note that on the standard PS4, when moving from application to a game, that application remains resonant in the system memory to allow for fast swapping between the two. With PS4 Pro, that application is moved to the extra 1GB of RAM when swapping to a game, freeing up nearly an entire gigabyte of the console’s remaining 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.”

This will give developers an additional 512mb of RAM to use at their disposal, bring the total to 5.5GB of GDR5 RAM. According to Cerny this will boost the consoles memory by 10% that equates to games looking “a heck of a lot better on the new console”.

PS4 Pro is set to release on November 10th

Red Dead Redemption 2 Officially Announced, Launching Fall 2017 On PS4 & Xbox One

Teased just a few days ago, Rockstar Games has finally announced the much anticipated sequel in the Red Dead franchise, Red Dead Redemption 2.

The title is slated to have a release date of Fall 2017 and will be releasing on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The debut trailer will be dropping on October 20th, at 11 AM Eastern Time.

red_dead_redemption_2-large_transnjjoebt78qiaydkjdey4cngtjfjs74myhny6w3gnbo8

The original Red Dead Redemption launched in back in 2010 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with an average score of 95% on Metacritics. The title never did see a PC release, and despite GTA 5 getting one, Rockstar doesn’t list PC as one of the launching platforms for RDR 2. This may very well change in the future as we near closer to it’s launch.

Dear PlayStation, Please Fix PSN Midnight Release – It’s False Advertising

As midnight struck in the East Coast and the day changed over to October 17th, thousands of excited Battlefield 1 owners soon became disappointed learning that their digital pre-orders would not release for at least another three hours.

This wouldn’t be the first, nor is it likely to be the last. Deus Ex had a similar unlock time issue, with a release being 12AM EST, though Square Enix was quick to point out the real unlock times.

Destiny ended up not releasing at Midnight, but instead at 5AM  Eastern Time, though at the same time this does correspond with the titles weekly/daily resets so that was at least understandable.

Call of Duty: Advance Warfare also had a similar situation, though rather then release later than expected, it actually changed it’s launch from Pacific to Eastern midnight of release day. Giving players living in the west coast a three hour early release. Witcher 3 also followed this same format, although it was far earlier as it was going with midnight launch for Europe central time worldwide.

There seems to be some poor communication between both PlayStation and publishers in regards to midnight launches, and unfortunately gamers are the ones to suffer from these mistakes. Countless reported on Battlefield 1 subreddit  showing statements from both EA and PlayStation support that the timer was indeed ‘bugged’ and that the title would be launching at 12AM EST as stated on the official pre-order page on the PlayStation Network.

r0ol7016t5sx
Image from BF1 sub-reddit

The big issue here, like myself, many were excited to be playing Battlefield 1 as soon as midnight struck. The game is available as of right now on both the Xbox One and PC, and the only way to be playing the PS4 version would be to go pick it up from a retailer such as GameStop, which had a midnight launch EST time. That means many were able to pick up the title right from GameStop on the west coast at around 9PM, a common practice that GameStop has been doing for some time now.

Many will say “whats the big deal? It’s just a three-hour wait”, and to that I say, haven’t you ever planned anything only to have it fall through? It’s frustrating to say the least, especially when digital games are supposedly going to be the future of buying games. It’s also more frustrating though when you essentially paid to play it early, but aren’t given access at the same time as everyone else. Sure a majority of players are likely to only get a few matches in or a portion of the single-player missions completed before they go to bed, but that’s what makes midnight launches all exciting.

This does come off as a rant, I will be honest with you. However, in my personal opinion, this is something that does indeed need to be addressed and resolved. Like I stated, Battlefield 1 certainly isn’t the first title to advertise itself as 12 AM Eastern Time launch game, but it certainly is one of the bigger ones to suppose to have one. It just comes off as false advertisement, and many are already demanding their refunds out of principle, though we think that’s a bit much of an over reaction. Don’t read this as another article trying to downplay PlayStation, but more of a minor (or major?) suggestion for the service.

I really do like PlayStation as my go to platform, and over the years I have grown to the idea of owning my games digitally. This won’t stop me from pre-ordering from PSN, though it will likely make me rethink certain titles. Now do mind that this isn’t entirely PlayStation fault, as it does appear to be more tied to the title file, telling it that it’s playable at a certain time. We see this on betas and other games with limited runs that have an expiration date.

We do believe though that it is the responsibility of the service provider to better communicate and to work with these publishers on releasing titles at their appropriate times. There should be a standard when it comes to releasing content digitally.

What do you guys think, are users wrong to complain about such a thing or should this really be an issue that needs more addressing?

Rockstar Games Teases Red Dead Announcement

It’s finally happening, a new Red Dead title is coming.

For those in the dark, Rockstar games have finally begun teasing the next title in the Red Dead series. It started yesterday with a simple facebook and twitter update, changing all their logos to Red, and now this morning Rockstar tweeted an image featuring cowboy characters in the distance.

This certainly is exciting, and hopefully we can expect a full blown announcement in the coming weeks.

PlayStation VR Works On PC Afterall, Along With Other Consoles

Though it’s not exactly the kind of support you’d expect.

While playing around with the PlayStation VR, reddit users have reported  that keeping the USB  plugged into the VR Unit and PS4 as it’s running and then plugging the HDMI into a PC or any other HDMI supported consoles would indeed display that hardware into the VR Headset. Now, do keep in mind that it is Cinematic Mode, a mode where your essentially sitting in a theater like setting with a Display being projected in the blank space ahead. We assume that this could also be used in conjunctions with other HDMI supported devices such as blu-ray players, phones, ect.

It’s not exactly the support many would have wanted to see on PC, more specifically drivers, though we do hope that does happen at some point in the future. For now though at least you can enjoy content from other devices being viewed right from the headset.

PlayStation VR Officially Launches Today

Today marks the official release of the much anticipated PlayStation VR Headset.

Both the core Unit ($399) and the Bundle Unit ($499) are available to those who pre-ordered, and if your one of the unlucky few who didn’t many retailers are currently offering units both in store and online.

Warning to those who have pre-ordered from Walmart like I did due to pre-order shortages at the time. Walmart may not fulfill the order as they took to many at the time of listing. Unfortunately I feel prey to this and was notified last night that my order was cancelled.

However, many extra units can be found right now at retailers, and both Amazon and Best Buy have reopened their orders.

If you want to know our verdict on the device we will be publishing our hands-on review in the coming weeks, so stay tune.

As we learned last month, the beta will be split up into two weekends, the first of which will be exclusive to users on PlayStation 4. Weekend 1 starts on October 14 10AM PDT for PlayStation 4 while Weekend 2 starts on October 21 at 10AM PDT for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Along with more specifics, Infinity Ward announced today that the studio also introducing a new metagame in the beta called Mission Teams. Players can enlist in one of two teams — the JTF Wolverines or the Orion Initiative — and work their way up a “team rank” by completing missions delivered by team commanders. Ranking up will unlock new calling cards, camos, emblems, Rig cosmetics, and team-specific prototype weapons.

As far as Rigs, maps, and modes go, here’s a breakdown of what’ll be in the Infinite Warfare beta:

MAPS

  • Frontier – Circular, two-lane, fast-paced. Frontier is a small section of a giant space station that is in orbit around the planet Neptune. The action is funneled down a long, central corridor with side paths offering an element of strategy and a constricted lower lane for players craving chaos.
  • Frost – Linear, three-lane, medium-paced. A research facility set atop the icy surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Ample opportunities for vertical combat and rapid encounters around sleek modular elements highlight this frozen battleground.
  • Throwback – Bent, three-lane, medium-paced. This throwback 1950’s ‘Main Street USA’ locale sits on a giant, rotating, torus-shaped space station. A large circular lane rings the perimeter, while a large center square with multiple avenues of approach and two opposing windows offers a wide range of engagement opportunities.

MODES

  • Team Deathmatch
  • Domination
  • Kill Confirmed
  • Defender – High-stakes game of ‘keep away.’ Your team must grab a drone and defend it, gaining points while holding on and keeping it out of enemy hands. Teamwork is essential here in order to make sure your points add up until the drone resets and the cycle starts again.

According to the Activision Blog, Infinity Ward will also have a few surprises in store, so stay sharp. We’ll keep you updated.
