Battlefield 1 – A Glimpse At “They Shall Not Pass” Expansion

With the Battlefield 1 playerbase getting their first taste of what DICE has to offer post-launch in the Giant’s Shadow map which included a new gadget in the grenade launcher for the support class. DICE has one last gift before the year is over.

This is none other than a first look at the first expansion DLC “The Shall Not Pass” that’s set to launch this upcoming March, which will include four new maps,  French army faction, new weapons including The Chauchat for the Support class and more.

While a few details of the expansion are still scarce, DICE did however go into detail on some of the locations we can expect to visit once the expansion goes live early next year. Such as the Battle Of Verdun, where the German army created a massive forest fire that was visible from far away and transformed the surrounding areas into a shadow of themselves.

As well as featuring maps that will include underground fighting in Fort Vaux, where both sides fight in a dark underground maze that was filled with grenades, flame throwers and poison gasses. For those who like to prefer to get in vehicular combat, DICE has something for you as well. As the Battle of Soissons which featured massive French tank assaults will also be included in the They Shall Not Pass expansion.

Alongside the few details DICE has revealed of the first expansion DLC, they’ve also released a few concept art of what you can expect to see when the expansion releases that you can view here.

Battlefield 1 is available for the PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One platforms.

Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Stands Tall Amongst Giants – Review

It’s not very often a video game sequel surpass the original in nearly every category. While Titanfall 2 isn’t as groundbreaking as its predecessor at first glance, it easily improves upon all aspects and is one of the most impressive first-person shooters to release this generation.

Respawn Entertainment is back again, now following up on its 2014 efforts when Titanfall brought a new level of advanced movement and a rejuvenated focus back on high-speed action to the genre. Titanfall 2 is a refinement in all aspects, but pushes players to hone their reflexes even further.

Titanfall 2

One thing many shooters today fall victim to is poor gameplay balancing. More often than not, firefights are pre-determine based on who shot first. Weapon metas become formed as whole teams gravitate to either snipers only or shotguns, even at long ranges. Then, spawn systems end up broken, adding to the frustration of constantly dying. While Titanfall 2 isn’t perfect when it comes to balancing, it sure is damn near close.

There is a large range of weapons to choose from, and each classes have their own situational roles. However, at the end of the day, no one classes feels like the end-all-be-all choice. It’s true that assault rifles will mostly likely be the meta in the game, but other categories like the shotguns, snipers, LMGs, and SMGs all work well and suit a range of players’ play styles. The big difference here is that the game eliminates the idea that everyone has to snipe or everyone has to use shotguns because they’re one-hit-kills. They do, in fact, cause heavy damage, and many times it is a one hit-kill-scenario, but it isn’t an annoyance because you don’t have to counter with the same weapon class, like in so many other titles. Time-to-kill has a perfect balance — firefights don’t last an eternity, nor do players die instantly. I find you often have time to fight back and/or escape from the line of fire, especially thanks to the flow of combat and map design.

Player mobility in Titanfall 2 is unmatched by any other title out there, taking the best from parkour games like Mirror’s Edge. Call of Duty has, over the years, added all these crazy boost jumping, wall-running, and other cool techniques that the original Titanfall introduced earlier, however, like Mirrors Edge, maps are designed to suit the pilot’s on-foot navigation. There are no surfaces that a pilot can’t use to their advantage.

This is what separates Respawn’s shooter from the more recent Call of Duty games. Map flow feels organic, and not forced, as you’re not going to see random ramps or walls placed in designated spots because they want you to specifically use that mechanic at that given moment. Maps are still large enough for a Titan to roam, yet cramped enough for a pilot to find shelter. It’s freedom of movement in the best form possible. Movement also isn’t hindered by ‘slowdowns,’ meaning that, if you really tried, you could wall-run and speed-run through an entire map with nearly zero stops. This makes Titanfall 2 perhaps one of the most fast-paced shooters around. Generally, it just “feels good”.

Of course, Respawn Entertainment was founded by the original Infinity Ward Studio that made the beloved Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, so the Call of Duty roots are still very much seen here in. A COD veteran would be able to tell right away that the gunplay feels strikingly familiar, yet different at the same time. That’s because Titanfall 2 still keeps the casual-friendly atmosphere so that anyone can pick-up-and-play, but it also caters to those who are looking for a deep and skill-based shooter.

1477700222-3065356646

Anyone can be a grunt fighting on a battlefield, but to be able to master piloting a Titan is a different story.

Piloting a Titan is probably one of the most satisfying things I have ever done in a video game. Unlike running around and gunning down everything in your path as a Pilot, navigating a Titan feels “clunky,” but in a good, powerful way. In total there are six different Titans, each with their own unique play-style. If you’re someone who enjoys gun blazing, holding a sniper position, close-range CQC, or an all-rounded strategy, there is a Titan for you. It’s also good to keep in mind that each Titan has their counter-Titan. While it may seem like one Titan is over-powered compared to you, it’s likely because that Titan is a good counter to yours. That said, it’s hard to ignore that Tone is basically the meta in the Last Titan Standing game mode and we hope to see some sort of adjustment in the future. Northstar could also use a little boost in effectiveness. Otherwise, the majority of online matches, any Titan can be taken out with the right set-up.

Titans are devastating machines, but their movements are quiet limited, giving grounded Pilots a fighting chance. Titans can cover a wide area of the battlefield, but they lack the speed and mobility that a Pilot has, which can make them vulnerable some attacks. They do have defenses against Pilots, but targeting them can be tricky due to their speed and size. It works out because even if you lose your titan in battle, I find you’ll be able to recoup quickly by taking out other Titans as a Pilot on foot.

Titanfall 2

Like in the first game, the Rodeo system is back. However, it has been re-worked and is one of the few faults about the title that the original did better. Back then, when a Pilot jumped on-top of an opposing Titan, they were able to apply damage by shooting their gun into the Titan, making Pilots more lethal. Because of this system, Titans also had a shield that would naturally regenerate. Now, the rodeo is a scripted animation where you either rip out a battery to be used in a friendly Titan or as an overshield, or throw a grenade inside. It’s perhaps not as fun that you have no control over the actions, so Titans feel safer and no longer need to respond to the threat, other than chasing that pilot down as they escape.

Without auto-regenerating shields, the game does encourage more teamwork as batteries need to be transported by other Pilots, but I still preferred the classic system.

titanfall2

Titanfall 2 comes packed with several different game-modes. They are: Attrition (TDM), Amped Hardpoint Domination, Pilot vs. Pilot, Free-for-All, Bounty Hunter, Capture the Flag, Skirmish, Last Titan Standing, Coliseum, Private Matches, and Mixtapes (randomly picked game modes). All them are enjoyable to play, though the lack of computer-controlled grunts in some of the modes like Capture the Flag lead to a more empty-feeling match. Every mode also supports Titans aside, from Pilot vs. Pilot.

Interestingly, the new Coliseum mode is a 1v1, Pilot vs. Pilot game type that pits combatants in a circular, empty arena in a ‘pure match of skill’. The only problem is that it literally becomes a who-can-hit-who-first scenario. I find I often lose a round one second after it had begun because certain players have learned where to shoot as soon as the timer ends. It can be fun at times, and it’s a great way to earn banners and patches, but it feel like it could be improved upon more with perhaps different map designs rather, than an empty circular space.

Titanfall 2

The original Titanfall died out quickly after DLC lead to a split community. Respawn Entertainment took notice to this and resolved when they announced that all DLC related to map packs and game modes would be free, effectively extending the life of the title. Already, one month into Titanfall 2, we already have a brand-new map and a great amount of new DLC that is free for all users. There are also a huge amount of decent shaders and icons that players can unlock, along with a regeneration option, which is basically Prestige-ing.

Titanfall 2 will face another struggle, however. By the time you have read this, both Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will have also launched, and the fear is that the player count in Titanfall 2 won’t be anywhere near it could be thanks to other distractions. As a fan of all three franchises, I feel Titanfall, right now, is the stronger of the three. It’s only one true fault is its release date. Already, in multiple play sessions, I have met the same players, even with having to wait before entering another match.

4.5 / 5

Titanfall 2 is in for a real test of endurance in the coming months, but I have full faith in Respawn Entertainment. Creating, by far, one the best multiplayer experiences yet on this generation, there’s no doubt that Titanfall 2 will continue to evolve and thrive. It’s fast, fun, and addicting, and if you were someone on the fence or someone who even thought about purchasing it or even looked into it, I cannot stress how highly recommend this title. As a big fan of multiplayer-centric games, very few titles have really made me want to go back and play them day in and day out.

Overwatch – Winter Wonderland Update Now Live, Includes A Nutcracker Zenyatta Skin And More

It’s time to get into the holiday spirit in Overwatch and what better what to do it than to transform the game into a giant winter wonderland thanks to the latest patch  making it possible.

Much like the previous themed updates for Overwatch such as the Halloween update that featured some pretty sweet skins such as the Witch Mercy, the Winter Wonderland is no different. In fact contains my personal favorite skin so far in the game, Zenyatta dressed up as a nutcracker.

Below you’ll find the latest skins to be released in Overwatch including the aforementioned nutcracker skin:

Alongside the new update, Blizzard has also released the patch notes for the Winter Wonderland update. You can check them out here.

Battlefield 1 – “Giant’s Shadow” Now Live, Nerfs Medic Syringe And Model 10-A Shotguns

Today marks a special day for those who happen to be Premium members for Battlefield 1 or pre-ordered DICE Stockholm’s latest shooter. As of right now, a new update is now live for Battlefield 1 that includes the first post-launch DLC map in “Giant’s Shadow“.

Which also includes some game adjustments such as nerfing the Syringe gadget from the Medic class to where it now has a short cooldown to when it can be used again making it a bit harder to get those revive trains going. Alongside some adjustments, the December 13th update will also include some new additions to the game such as Spectator mode and the new grenade launcher gadget for the Support class.

Below you’ll find some of the highlights of the patch, or if you feel like reading the entirety of the patch notes you can do so here.

  • Syringe:
    • We’ve added a short cool down between syringe uses and added the ability to ignore the cooldown if near an ammo crate. Together a Medic and a Support can team up to quickly revive a large amount of soldiers. The cool down is minor, and is intended to only prevent the near instant revive of several soldiers in a very short time. Reviving a single soldier is unaffected. We feel this is a good balance to prevent “revive trains” from a single Medic, while not reducing the usefulness of revive, with a bonus of additional teamplay.
  • Shotguns:
    • Reduced the range for the buckshot variants of the M97 Trench Gun, Model 10-A and Sawed Off Shotgun, reducing the maximum one-hit kill distance.
    • M97 Trench gun  added an extra pellet to all variants and slightly improved the damage drop-off for the Sweeper variant.
    • Backbored shotgun variants had their range improved, as previously you took too big of a hit for the improved recoil.
    • 12g Automatic increased the accuracy to allow users to make use of its high rate of fire more effectively.
  • Martini-Henry Infantry:
    • It is now affected by a 0.9 multiplier to the lower torso and upper arms and a 0.75 multiplier to the legs and forearms, like the other rifles with sweet-spot mechanics.
  • General:
    • Monte Grappa, Suez, Ballroom Blitz & Argonne Forest – Made tweaks to certain areas of the map where attackers had a very difficult time capturing specific sectors.
    • Wrecked Airship parts left behind by a destroyed airship should no longer occasionally kill soldiers.
    • Fixedrubber banding issues and non-smooth movement of airplanes in MP.
    • Slightly adjusted the matchmaking ruleset for Operations to reduce the chance of entering an Operation that is about to end.
  • Spectator Mode:
    • In Spectator, players will be able to join a live BF1 match as an observer.  From there, observers can switch between first-person and third-person camera views of all the players on the battlefield through our Player View mode, get an overhead bird’s eye view of the battlefield in Table Top mode, or fly a camera through the world using Free Cam mode.

Giant’s Shadow is available now for Premium members and those who pre-ordered the game. For those who didn’t, you will have to wait till December 20th.

This update also introduces us to the first batch of microtransactions. Now these MT are only cosmetics and in no way shape or form alter or give players a gameplay advantage. New skins and camos will be introduced, but the beef of these cosmetics are the Prime Titans which are brand-new frames. This update will introduce two new frames, though it hasn’t been stated which Titans are getting them.

We are still working on our review, but trust us when we say this. This game is worth buying, and it’s currently on sale on both the Xbox Live network and PlayStation Network.

The Division – 1.5 Patch And Survival DLC Now Available For PC, Xbox One

After releasing the 1.4 patch for The Division, which most can agree that it made many significant changes to the game such as adopting Diablo’s “loot can drop from anywhere” motto and a better end game. Massive Entertainment is now ready to release the second of three the DLC pieces for The Division.

Starting as of today, for those playing The Division on the PC and Xbox One can sink their teeth into the new Survivor DLC which puts you in the middle of a  more hardcore experience. As you’ll have to put your survival skills to the test as you survive the harsh NYC winter with little to no gear while fighting NPC’s and other agents who want to put you six feet under for the scraps you happened to come by.

You can catch the trailer for the DLC above.

Additionally, Massive has also pushed out a new patch for the game which includes new weapons, gear sets, and a new world tier.

The Division is available for the PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One platforms.

Battlefield 1 – Massive Fall Update Now Live, Includes Changes To Operations And More

As of today, a new update for Battlefield 1 is now available for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms that includes numerous improvements to the game. There are also various gameplay changes such as the ticket number for the attackers in Operations seeing a pretty significant increase.

While the change log for the fall update is pretty lengthy, below you’ll find a few of the important changes that were implemented in this patch:

  • Suez:
    • Added two additional flags on the Suez map, giving it a total of 5 flags.
    • Added 1 armored car for either team to spawn in their HQ.
    • Reduced the size of the capture volumes on the flags located in the villages, old A & B flag. This is to reduce the amount of building interiors located within the capture area. The change should result in the flags being easier to capture.
  • Operations:
    • Increase attacker maximum tickets for both player counts to 150 for 40 player Operations and 250 for 64 player Operations.
    • Increased the amount of tickets regained from killing retreating defenders after capturing a sector from 2 to 3.
    • Slightly reduced the time it takes to capture flags.
    • Increased the amount of minimum ticket regained when capturing a sector in 64p Operations from 30 to 50. (64 players)
  • UI:
    • The Quit button is now available at any given time when in the End of Round
    • You can customize your soldier from within the UI by selecting either the icon on Home or on Soldier.
  • Squad leader mutiny:
    • If the squad leader ignores requests for orders the leadership is transferred to another member of the squad after 60 seconds of a squad members requesting an order. The requesting player is added to the want-to-be-leader queue for that squad and a 60 seconds timer starts (the timer is not reset if there are other squad members waiting in the queue already). When the 60 seconds pass, the first member in the squad queue (the one who requested order earliest) is promoted as a squad leader. If there are other members in the queue after him, the timer is automatically reset to 60 seconds and if the new leader doesn’t give orders over that period either, then the next waiting in line is promoted and so on. However, if the current squad leader issues an order the current queue is cleared.
  • Rush:
    • Equal weather in Rush. Now uses same weather sequence and trigger conditions for both rounds in a match.

Alongside the new patch, it also appears that you’ll be able to buy Battlepacks with real money very ‘soon’. According to Amazon, it seems that this feature goes live on November 22nd and these will be the prices for the Battlepacks:

  • 3 Battlepacks: 5.49 USD
  • 5 Battlepacks:  8.99 USD
  • 10 Battlepacks: 16.99 USD
  • 20 Battlepacks: 29.99 USD

For more whats to come in the near future for Battlefield 1, feel free to read the road map that DICE Stockholm has outlined which includes the already implemented feature ‘squad leader mutiny’ as well as the upcoming free map, Giant’s Shadow.

Titanfall 2 – Map Hacks & Titan Balancing Coming

For those who are enjoying this stellar of a title called Titanfall 2, you may be happy to hear that Respawn Entertainment plans on releasing a patch that’ll address map hacks, along with some balancing for the Titans.

For those who don’t know what Map Hack is, its a streak reward that players can earn that’ll reveal all the opposing team locations to all other allies, even allowing you see right through walls. Respawn is aware that this is a pretty over-power streak reward and plans on tweaking it in an upcoming patch, along with the Tone and Legion Titans, though nothing is known about their tweaks.

And for you Northstar players out there, you’ll be happy to know that they are working on a tweak that’ll increase the damage and decrease the duration of flight core. This will be a good tweak as often times Northstars are just sitting ducks when they use their flight cores.

For those on the fence, you can expect our review of Titanfall 2 sometimes next week.
