The Division Update 1.1: Incursions Patch Notes – Full Details On Player Trading, Gear Score, & More

Later this month, developer Massive will deploy one of The Division’s biggest updates yet, introducing new content, features, and bug fixes to the now one-month old game.

As we found out last week, Update 1.1: Incursions is due to hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 12. We also got a few highlights on what to expect, but today, the studio is lifting the curtain on the entire list of changes that will take effect when the new update launches.

A major change high-level players will notice right away is the introduction of Gear Score, a new unit of measurement that identifies the strength of the gear you currently have equipped. Think Destiny’s Light Level, if you want to make the comparison.

Gear can also be traded within the first two hours of being acquired within a group. According to the notes, any items dropped by enemies can be traded.

The Dark Zone is also finally getting some more PvP-incentives thrown into the mix with Supply Drops. This public event will drop “heavily sought after” items that will likely be contested by both real players and non-playable characters, so you’ll have to be ready for anything.

There’s a lot more, so read up on the entire list of changes below.

Infection Is Coming To Halo 5: Guardians – New Teaser Trailer

Arguably Halo’s most popular custom game mode of all time is finally making its long-awaited return. As developer 343 Industries teased in a short gameplay trailer earlier today, Infection is coming to Halo 5: Guardians.

Fans will have to wait until after the upcoming Ghosts of Meridian update, due later this month, for that to be a reality. It’s slated to launch with the following update, Memories of Reach, later this year. Speaking of which, you’ll even catch a suit of Reach-inspired armor in the teaser trailer above, clearly a part of the content update’s new batch of REQs.

For those unfamiliar with it, Infection puts a small number of Flood (or Infected) players up against a team of Spartans. With only the ability to melee, the Flood can infect other spartans, turning them to their side. The goal of those being hunted is to survive as long as possible. Modeled after a custom game in Halo 2, Infection was made popular in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.

As most would agree, its about time it found a home in Halo 5. Keep an eye out for more updates in the near future!

The Division’s Free Incursions DLC Arrives Mid-April With Player Trading, New Details

The Division‘s first major content update is headed to consoles and PC this month, developer Massive has revealed.

Incursions, a free update that all players will automatically download, will be available on April 12 and will add a brand new endgame activity specifically designed for co-operative play. That also means new rewards and high-level gear.

More importantly, The Division’s Incursions update will also introduce player trading, letting agents swap items between squadmates.

Here are some of the important highlights, as per Ubisoft’s latest press release:

  • New gear is a vital centerpiece of Incursions, which introduces four rare gear sets: Sentry’s Call, Striker’s Battle Gear, Path of the Nomad, and Technician’s Authority. Each set is meant to bolster a specific play style; Sentry’s Call promotes consistent precision, Striker’s Battle Gear is for assault-focused players, and so on. Finding and equipping four pieces from a single set unlocks a new, never-before-seen talent for your Agent, which the developers aren’t revealing yet.
  • Agent level is still capped at 30, but your gear score can boost your abilities beyond your level, and are touted as a new way of leveling up for top-level players.
  • Loot trading is now possible; if you get good loot, you can now drop it on the ground and make it available to other players in your group. In the Dark Zone, you can only drop loot inside the Dark Zone gate.
  • Assignments are new tasks – killing 10 Cleaners, for example – that are meant as brief, optional side goals that update daily and can earn you Phoenix Credits, Division tech, and other rewards.
  • Supply drops will periodically fall from the sky in the Dark Zone, giving you and other groups something to battle over. They’re also protected by tough enemies, but the loot doesn’t need to be extracted, as it’s uncontaminated, and can’t be stolen once acquired.
  • When your Agent dies, you can now camera-follow your teammates, seeing what they see and offering tactical support.
  • Falcon Lost has two difficulties: Hard mode, which is recommended for players whose gear score is equivalent to level 31; and challenge mode, which is even tougher. Also, there aren’t any checkpoints in Falcon Lost; if your team goes down, you’ll have to restart from the beginning. Additionally, you can replay Falcon Lost and other upcoming Incursions as many times as you want and still be rewarded with new loot.
  • Enemies can now employ drones, aerial enemies that will be tricky to hit. You’ll also be pitted against an armored personnel carrier, which acts as a boss and is impervious to bullets, forcing you to find another way to deal with it.

Incursions is the first of two free content updates coming to The Division in the near future.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Eclipse DLC Announced, Includes Reimagined World at War Map

More Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 DLC is coming this April. Treyarch and Activision have just announced “Eclipse,” Black Ops 3’s newest map pack that will once again deliver four brand new multiplayer maps and a whole new zombies experience.

It arrives on April 19, first on PlayStation 4, and will be available as a part of the Black Ops 3 Season Pass or separately for $14.99 USD.

Here’s what’s in it, according to the latest press release. Heads up, Call of Duty: World at War fans, you’ll like what the map “Verge” might have to offer:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Eclipse DLC

Spire

Spire takes Multiplayer combat to a futuristic sub-orbital airport terminal set high in the clouds. Multiple levels and open areas promote intense, mid-range combat around a clean, high-tech civilian environment. Watch your step, because one wrong move could send you plummeting back through the stratosphere.

Rift

Head to the core of a harsh futuristic military complex, set high above an active caldera. Rift funnels and forces tight, intense engagements, where the only way through is forward. Utilize the unique core movement opportunities to outsmart and outplay enemies as you traverse the suspended rail system.

Knockout

Housed in a traditional Shaolin Temple with a retro twist, Knockout sets the stage for a bloody Kung Fu tournament. This mid-sized map showcases a sharp contrast between the mid-range engagements of the traditional exterior architecture and the tight close-quarters of an eclectic 1970’s styled interior.

Verge

In this re-imagination of the classic Call of Duty: World at War map, Banzai, Verge drops Multiplayer combat into the center of a distant post-apocalyptic future, where two warring factions are entrenched in constant battle. Take control of the key bridge, fortresses, tunnel systems and waterfalls as you engage in high-speed action through this medium-sized map.

Zetsubou No Shima

Eclipse also sets the stage for Zetsubou No Shima, the highly-anticipated, all-new entry in the Call of Duty: Black Ops III Zombies storyline that spans the four DLC Map Packs for Black Ops III this year. The Origins characters continue on their mission to stop the zombie apocalypse not only in this universe but in all universes. Our heroes find themselves stranded on a remote Pacific island which is home to the Division 9 facility: a secret biological research lab whose experiments with Element 115 and its effects on human, animal, and plant biology has created horrors beyond belief. Zetsubou No Shima features a foliage rich island map including new terrifying zombie enemies, a variety of innovative transport mechanics, more devastating traps and classic Zombies side quests.

Check out the official poster:

DLC2Eclipse_Key

And here’s the prologue to the new Zetsubou No Shima zombies map:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Eclipse DLC’s official live stream reveal happens at 11:00PM PST today over on Treyarch’s official YouTube channel.

Check Out The New Maps & REQs From Halo 5: Guardians’ Ghosts Of Meridian Update [Updated]

UPDATE

More details of Halo 5: Guardians’ Ghosts of Meridian update have surfaced, courtesy of 343 Indutries’ latest blog update, including the full round of new REQs that Spartans will be able to earn.

ORIGINAL STORY

April is right around the corner and Halo 5: Guardians fans know exactly what that means: so too is the game’s next big, free content update that developer 343 Industries is calling Ghosts of Meridian.

In addition to the standard affair of new REQs, Ghosts of Meridian will deliver two brand new multiplayer maps — one for Arena and one for Warzone — that gaming website Gamespot was able to reveal earlier today.

Arena fans should get excited about Tyrant, specifically, because 343 is finally offering up a non-UNSC-themed arena map that is instead based on Foreunner architecture. Known as “Site C” by human explorers, Tyrant is the remains of an ancient battleground where the Forerunner and Flood once clashed.

Meanwhile, Skirmish at Darkstar is Halo 5’s smallest and most dense Warzone map. In it, the studio hopes to facilitate many styles of play and create confrontation between the two teams right from the start of a match.

Big thanks to Gamespot for the first details on both maps:

TYRANT

Gamespot writes, “This is a small-scale symmetrical map that was made for Capture the Flag and Assault game types. Proficient snipers will want to head to the weapon pad, where strong sightlines are available in the Blue and Red bases. Players who prefer close-range combat can head for the Scattershot and do damage that way.”

SKIRMISH AT DARKSTAR

Gamespot writes: “This is Halo 5’s newest–and smallest–Warzone map. Though it was announced earlier this month, we now know a lot more about it. The bosses you’ll face may prove to be more formidable, as some Promethean bosses will zip around in hijacked UNSC vehicles, while other bosses can call in reinforcements. Players can also make use of various gates across the map, opening and closing them strategically to their benefit.

After Ghosts of Meridian, Halo 5: Guardians is due for three more free updates throughout the rest of the year, one of which will deliver the return of the highly anticipated Warzone Firefight mode. Keep your sights on MP1st for updates!

Ever wonder what you’d get if you mixed the writing of Tom Clancy with a loot-driven RPG-shooter that takes place in a lawless cityscape amidst a severe crisis? Tom Clancy’s The Division is just that: an RPG-driven military shooter from Massive Entertainment that tasks you with restoring order in mid-town Manhattan after a devastating event wipes out the majority of the borough’s inhabitants.

The first thing you should know about The Division — and what is quite possibly the largest misconception surrounding the latest entry in the Tom Clancy line of games — is that it’s an RPG first and a shooter second, not the other way around. The Division plays like a traditional Western RPG; enemies soak up damage as attack numbers pop up over their head. Meanwhile, players use abilities and items to increase strength and weaken enemy defenses. In fact, you’ll find yourself analyzing numbers on a constant basis, making sure stats like DPS, Health, and Skill Power are always topped off by equipping the most efficient weapons and gear. If numbers are your thing, Massive has got you covered with almost every stat you could want to know.

Outside of character-building and leveling up to use more powerful items, you’ll spend Medical, Tech, and Security points on the three respective wings of your Base of Operations in order to unlock better abilities and gain access to powerful resources. This is accomplished by completing story missions, side missions, and encounters spread throughout an impressively detailed open world that is all neatly presented on a world map.

5TXp5sd

If you play The Division like any other shooter, you’ll likely be put off by the lengthy checklist of tasks to wrap up and the “spongey” nature of your opponents that won’t go down with even the cleanest headshot. Want to take out enemies quickly? You’ll have to earn the proper gear to buff up your stats high enough. But, even still, there’ll always be those elite few that require patience and perseverance as you slowly chip away at their health while fending off waves of henchmen.

The Division presents fairly standard enemy archetypes from the lowly grunt to the sometimes annoying rusher. There are also heavily armed foes and, of course, named bosses. But with each kill comes the potential for — you guess it — loot. Weapon and gear drops have different levels of rarity ranging from common (white) all the way up to high-end (orange).

Without stepping over the bounds of real life, I think Massive did a fantastic job staying true to the non-fictional world presented in Tom Clancy’s stories. Talents gifted by high-end gear are simple but effective buffs like providing a higher chance for critical hits or boosting up your Scavenging attribute, allowing you to find better items. It’s easy to get excited about drops, even without expecting to get your hands on laser guns or plasma rifles. Gear is the name of the game and, luckily, The Division features a mechanic that lets you re-roll certain stats so you can fine-tune your Agent without sticking to a specific class-type, leading to a very satisfying level of customization.

wRvQDPm

Massive has something special on their hands with The Division and it shows particularly in the believable atmosphere of the post-crisis world they’ve created. As a native New Yorker who happens to live minutes away from where much of the game takes place, it feels eerily realistic, rivalling even the immense playable worlds developers like Rockstar have created in the past. From the brightly-lit streets of Time Square that now reek of abandonment and despair to the project houses over at Stuyvesant, now desolate and overrun with looters, Massive has built the ultimate playground for the budding government agent looking to bring order to the world.

It’s also just as dense as it is expansive with tunnels and apartments full of items to scavenge. The interior of each building feels as if it’s been created uniquely from one another, unlike most open world games that copy and paste all too often. Some locations require a bit of parkour-ing to navigate through by the use of surrounding objects or fire escapes in order to get to some of the collectible items or to complete some missions. The underground portion of the map is also almost a world of its own; it’s deceivingly big.

While character animations and details are also best-in-class, The Division’s combat can suffer at times due to frustrating cover mechanics. Cover is crucial to your survival as firefights aren’t meant to be fought out in the open. It’s easy enough to get into cover, but un-sticking quickly in order to change position or avoid other dangers is often quite clunky and doesn’t feel very responsive, leading to frustrating deaths. Enemy AI and difficulty is manageable in a fair and challenging way, but the cover system can sometimes just get in the way of what could have been an epic battle.

kDzdGww

Playing with friends, while the best way to play The Division, also comes across as an afterthought, especially when trying to build a fire team of varying player levels. You never actually see your friends in the world, but only as an icon on the main map. It’s easy enough to get groups started to and invite players from one instance into another, but good luck if you’re a newcomer trying to party up with a friend who’s a much higher level. Difficulty scales to the highest level player, meaning an agent who’s five or more levels down won’t be able to contribute meaningfully. For a co-op driven shooter, it’s too bad you can’t just jump into another player’s game and expect to have a good time if they’re a higher level.

When it does work, co-op combat is top-notch. It requires communication and character builds that compliment one another and mix the right amount of crowd control abilities, buffs, and de-buffs. I especially found a lot of the end-game content to be the right mixture of difficult scenarios, fun gameplay, and tactical team-based combat. But, again, it only works because everyone is the same level, level 30, which is the current cap in the game.

Unfortunately, end-game content is rather barebones, consisting mostly of running the same missions over and over again but at more challenging difficulty levels. Enemies in these situations will soak up bullets, so some players may also be put off by the ‘bullet-spongey’ nature of the end-game bosses. But, ultimately, it can still feel very rewarding when things click and your team works together to get things done.

O1ccbwg-1

Other than the challenge modes, their isn’t a whole lot to do in The Division’s end game, unless you decide to venture off into the Dark Zone.

To describe the Dark Zone simply, it’s a PvP-enabled (but not necessarily PvP-driven) portion of the map where players police themselves and are the judge, jury, and executioner for every other Division agent. Like the rest of Manhattan, the Dark Zone is populated with enemy AI that drop some of the game’s best loot, but is also populated with other players that will either aid you in your adventure or try to stop you in your tracks. By choosing to go rogue and shooting another agent, you place a bounty on your head that will attract anyone in the vicinity. Should you survive the timer, you’ll be rewarded handsomely with credits that are exclusive to the Dark Zone and let you purchase even better gear. Failing, however, will cost you not only currency, but also experience points tied to your Dark Zone level that is separate from the game’s PvE.

Currently, some of the game’s best blueprints and gear are unlocked at Dark Zone level 50, which you can get to at a slow but steady pace by farming mobs, or by taking risks and becoming one of the server’s most wanted. It’s also not possible to simply walk out with whatever gear you find from enemies. Players must extract contaminated items at one of many designated landing pads before accessing it at the Base of Operations. The time it takes to wait for your chopper can leave you and your group vulnerable, which puts an interesting dynamic on the whole situation as you try to judge players’ intentions.

It gets as about exciting as the players make it. Sure, you might lose a lot more than there is to be gained by going rogue, but it could also be the most fun you’ll have with the game. You never know who’s lurking behind the corner, waiting to try to claim the bounty placed on your head. Sometimes, things get really hectic and you’ll see other agents grouping up to take you and your fire team on, only to turn on one another through accidental friendly fire, turning themselves rogue in the process. Really, the Dark Zone is a giant social experiment that doesn’t always appear to have a ‘point,’ per se, but does lead to some of the more unique moments to be had while gaming.

PvKU1IS

The Division is full of interesting ideas and definitely has a bright future ahead of it. It has the “it” factor with a high level of detail and polish and is especially enjoyable with friends, if you’re all around the same level. The environment in which the game takes place is rich and begs to be explored, which can make putting down the controller between sessions rather difficult. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also one of the best-looking games out there.

It can be tempting to plow through the story content in order to get to the end-game activities as quickly as possible, but I urge players to seriously take their time and enjoy the journey to level 30. In many ways, it’s the best part of the game, as my colleague Tom also recently pointed out. No, there isn’t a whole lot to do afterwards and Incursions won’t be available until April, but the gameplay and combat is worth coming back to, that is when the clumsy cover system doesn’t spoil your fun.

3.5 / 5

So far, it appears that Massive Entertainment is listening to its player base, as seen in the latest patch that happened to address many concerns, improving its quality of life that will likely get even better over time. Being a one-of-a-kind mix of RPG and shooter genres, despite borrowing a few ideas here and there, The Division is ultimately worth checking out and sinking some serious time into.

Black Ops 3 Double XP & Double Weapon XP Starts Friday, PS4 Gets Free DLC Weekend

Incoming this weekend, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 multiplayer is getting another dose of Double XP and Double Weapon XP.

Treyarch announced the news earlier today, adding that users on PlayStation 4 will also get the chance to demo content from Black Ops 3’s Awakening DLC for free for the duration of the weekend. Starting April 1 at 10AM PDT and ending on April 4 at 10AM PDT, Black Ops 3 owners on PlayStation 4 will find all four Awakening DLC maps — Gauntlet, Splash, Rise, and Skyjacked — in normal rotation in multiplayer playlists. The new Der Eisendrache zombies mode will also be accessible for the weekend. All of it is automatically installed, so you won’t have to download any extras.

As for Double XP and Double Weapon XP, that starts and ends at the same dates and times, but for all platforms.

In other PlayStation-specific news, Treyarch and Activision also announced that Black Ops 3’s Awakening DLC will come to PlayStation 3 on April 5 for $14.99. Originally, Awakening was only announced to arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but it looks like the studio is making it work Sony’s older console as well. No word yet if it will also make to Xbox 360 at a later date.

Incoming Rainbow Six Siege Update Tweaks Its Newest Operators & Delivers New Improvements

Rainbow Six Siege’s next major update is right around the corner, bringing balance changes to its two newest Operators, Frost and Buck, while delivering a number of improvements to the game.

Update 2.3 is scheduled to launch on PC on March 30 and is tentatively planned to hit PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 5.

In addition to the Operator tweaks, the patch aims to make Ranked Matchmaking a better experience by allowing games to start only if there are 10 players in the lobby. Ranked reconnection mechanics have also been fixed to trigger more frequently. Beyond that, there are also improvements to spawn locations, Custom Matches, Spectator Mode, and anti-cheat, along with a number of bug fixes.

Here are some of the highlights:

Frost’s Super 90 Shotgun falloff damage now begins earlier

We tweaked the falloff damage of Frost’s shotgun. The falloff previously started at 5 meters. It will now begin at 3.5 meters, making it roughly on par with the M1014. We have made this choice because Frost’s Super 90 had too much range, making Frost too powerful alongside her Nitro Cells and Welcome Mats.

Buck’s Skeleton Key’s environmental destruction has been enhanced

We have designed Buck with the intention of having him be a versatile Operator that is able to go wherever he desires. We do not believe that the state he currently is in reflects this.

The initial intent was to use his underslung shotgun as a tool and not so much as a weapon. As the pros have shown us in the Pro League, it is working as a tool, but it could definitely be more efficient and useful.

Therefore, we have decided to increase the environmental destruction of Buck’s underslung shotgun. As the following series of .GIFs show, it is now a better tool and will help you get where you want faster.

SMG-11’s recoil increased

We have increased the SMG-11’s recoil. The weapon was too powerful as it was, with recoil that was too easily controlled given the weapon’s rate of fire. We have opted to alter it in two different ways for PC and for consoles:

  • For PC, we tweaked the SMG-11 in two ways: first, the weapon will not center back after a shot quite as fast as it did before (0.08 seconds -> 0.2 seconds). Second, the recoil will be more unpredictable now. We made that decision because we felt the recoil was too vertical, often giving easy headshots since that weapon’s rate of fire is very high.
  • For consoles, we have increased the value for the rate at which the camera rises. We have roughly doubled that speed. What that means is that the player will have to compensate downwards more with the joystick in order to control the vertical recoil. We also applied the same tweaks to the vertical recoil as explained above for PC controls.

We have increased the SMG-11’s recoil for 2 reasons: the first one is a combination of the fact that the recoil is almost purely vertical and that you can put an ACOG sight on it. We consider this to be too good of a combination, and the Pro League’s players seemed to agree, given their loadout selections for Smoke and Sledge. The second reason is simply that it is a secondary weapon. We hope that this will strengthen its role as a secondary weapon, and lessen its use as a primary.

To get the full scoop on Update 2.3, you’ll want to head on over to the official Ubisoft forums.

Opinion – The Division Reviews Don’t Paint The Entire Picture

The end game may be lacking, but should scores for Tom Clancy’s The Division be penalized because of it?

Ask a number of The Division players how their time with the game is going, and you’ll more than likely hear a familiar theme throughout: ‘completed the story, got all Gold gear, hit level 50 in the Dark Zone…..now what?’ Similar to another loot grinder, Destiny, the end game content in The Division is severely lacking shortly after launch. As opposed to harvesting materials, The Division has agents mission farming in Challenge Mode to accrue enough Phoenix Credits for new gear and blueprints. Once you’ve gotten the best gear, players can use those same credits to change or reroll a single stat on said gear. Monotonous? You bet. Once the allure of new gear is removed from the equation, it is easy to see how tedious and dull the end game can become playing the same missions constantly.

But what about everything leading up to The Division’s end game? Amongst the backlash, critics appear to be overlooking that The Division’s main story component is quite enjoyable. Massive has created a world where players can progress either solo, with a group of strangers using The Division’s fantastic (though slightly obtuse at first) matchmaking system, or with three friends. If you want a bit of mischief, players can step into the Dark Zone for some PvPvE action for a nice diversion. The Snowdrop engine looks fantastic with some of the best graphics we have seen this generation (fire effects anyone?). The main storyline lacks depth, but the audio logs and ECHO’s — complemented by the stellar visuals in the snow laden, post-pandemic NYC — do a good job of painting a picture of what NYC was like shortly before and during the early goings of the outbreak.

In one ECHO, a scene plays out where two friends are out in the street having a discussion. One is now apart of The Cleaners — a flamethrower wielding group looking to burn and kill anything infected — and the other is an average Joe who unfortunately has come down with a cough. The average Joe is trying to plead his case saying its just his asthma and that he is not infected. He even pulls out his inhaler as proof. The Cleaner isn’t buying it, and proceeds to scorch his longtime friend alive. While a real-life pandemic is (hopefully) something I won’t be apart of, it is almost impossible to not examine your own morals and wonder: what would I think in that scenario? Would I give my friend the benefit of the doubt? Could I pull the trigger?

And let’s not forget the gameplay or character progression. As a third-person shooter, The Division makes use of the cover mechanics first championed by Gears of War. Though the shooting can feel off at times due to the lack of enemy reactions (think Shotgun to the face), the shooting remains enjoyable throughout the journey. Players can also make use of consumables to alter bullet types and gain other buffs such as extra damage to Elite enemies. With new loot found everywhere and unlockable skills that cater to very different play styles, you’ll have more than enough incentive to stick around until the end. Completing the main storyline and hitting LVL30 (while dabbling in the Dark Zone from time to time accidentally hitting level 23 along the way) took me around 20-25 hours. Looking at just the main story and not taking into account the end game, The Division was a very amusing experience. And based upon the amount of time I put in, those 20-25 hours were absolutely worth the $60 I spent.

Did you get your money’s worth out of The Division? Let us know in the comments below!
