Latest Doom Trailer Reveals All Six Launch Multiplayer Modes

After an exciting look at all nine multiplayer maps launching with the newly rebooted Doom game later this Spring, id Software and Bethesda have put together yet another gameplay trailer, this time showing off the shooter’s offering of multiplayer modes.

There are at least six that will launch with the game, some of which will be familiar to most multiplayer FPS fans and others a little more creative. Check out the video above to get an idea and read on for a summary of each new mode, courtesy of the Bethesda Blog:

Soul Harvest

Because sometimes just killing your enemies isn’t enough… Soul Harvest is similar to Team Deathmatch (see below), but instead of racking up points with every kill, players need to collect the souls of their fallen foes. Each soul will remain in the world for a limited time. These souls can be scooped up by anyone on either team. The catch? Only the opposing team earns points for grabbing a soul – but the teammates of the vanquished can play spoiler by seizing an ally’s soul to prevent their foes from gaining a soul point.

But there’s more to Soul Harvest than kill-and-collect. A demon rune will appear where the first player is killed, and this demon power-up has no time limit. In addition to the increased threat demons always bring, any enemy players killed by a demon drop two souls to claim instead of the usual one. And if you manage to slay a demon? You have the opportunity to pick up the five souls it leaves behind – and perhaps become the demon yourself.

Victory is earned by the first team to reach a preset score, or by the team with the most points when time runs out.

Freeze Tag

Remember how much fun it was to play freeze tag with your friends? Now imagine doing it with a Gauss Cannon. Or a Heavy Assault Rifle. On Mars.

Freeze Tag plays out a lot like the real-world equivalent (minus the heavy weaponry and hellish backdrop). Rather than killing your foes, opponents are instead frozen in place –immobilized in a block of ice. Teammates can thaw their allies by standing nearby for a set amount of time.

Players frozen within blocks of ice will slide around if they’re shot or otherwise jostled, leading to all kinds of chaotic possibilities – both planned and unplanned. If you find a frozen ally near a deadly hazard, for example, you can try to knock your teammate into the hazard so he’ll be destroyed; the shattered ally will then respawn. Or, you can try to prevent a foe from being thawed by knocking him away from an ally. Multiple allies can also be thawed if they’re close enough to a single active player, and frozen players will thaw more quickly if multiple active allies are all close enough.

For rounds that remain unresolved until only a few moments remain, a demon rune will drop into the arena to things along.

Victory is earned by the first team to completely freeze the opposing team. If there are still unfrozen players on both sides when time runs out, the team with the most active players will win the round.

Warpath

King of the Hill gets even crazier in Warpath, where a single capture point moves around the map along a set (and clearly marked) pathway. And if that’s not enough, a demon rune marches along in lockstep – but on the opposite side of the path.

This combo of moving capture point and demon rune is what makes Warpath so darn fun. At any point players need to make a whole bunch of choices. Do you cluster up with your teammates in the capture point, speeding up the capture time and ensuring that the point remains yours? Do you race to the other side of the map, hoping to pick up the demon rune to quickly turn the tide of battle? Do you trail behind the capture point, trying to pick off your foes and protect the rear? Do you rush ahead and try to stop your foes from an uncontested capture with a frontal assault? And how do you manage to stay alive when the capture point slides over a void or deadly hazard? The unrelenting movement of the capture point makes Warpath a constant adrenaline rush – a non-stop tug of war for domination.

Points are accrued whenever your team controls the capture point. Victory is earned by the first team to reach a preset score, or by the team with the most points when time runs out.

Domination

Domination includes up to three static capture points that are spread out across a map. Players spawn on different sides of the map, and can control the capture points by clearing out any enemies and standing within the designated zone. Points are earned based on how long you control a capture point.

Of course, it wouldn’t be DOOM without a twist on this classic formula. In the case of Domination, the demon rune plays a key role. During a match, the rune will spawn randomly throughout the arena, and its appearance on the map will be announced to all players, giving everyone a chance to race for the rune. Because demons are more powerful than your standard soldier (as they are in all modes), the leading team will want the rune to prevent the other team from catching up. After all, if the losing team gets the demon rune first, they have a strong shot at tipping the scales by forcefully capturing a point and more easily holding their ground.

Victory is earned by the team that reaches a preset score, or by the team with the most points when the time runs out.

Team Deathmatch

One of the two purest takes on classic modes in DOOM multiplayer, Team Deathmatch pits two teams against each other in a straight-up kill-fest. Players can choose their loadouts, customize their marine and become the demon if they grab the rune while it’s in play. (Demon kills are scored the same as regular kills.) Power-ups and power weapons also play a key role here – we’ll have more info on those in our next video and feature. Victory is earned by the first team that reaches a preset score or by the team with the most points when time runs out.

Clan Arena

The other pure take on a classic mode, Clan Arena is a game of elimination: the last team standing wins. All pick-ups are removed from the map, and players won’t be able to restore their health or armor. Once you’re dead, you’re dead – no respawning. And demons aren’t available during this mode. Victory is earned by the team that fully eliminates all its foes – or by the team with the most remaining players when time runs out.

Doom is set to release on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 13th. It is developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks.

The official Doom Closed Beta starts at the end of this month on March 31.

First Look At Halo 5: Guardians’ New 8-Player Warzone Firefight Mode

Later this year, 343 Industries is putting the Firefight back in Halo with the return of the fan-favorite co-operative mode made popular by Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach.

The studio announced its plans to launch a new version of Firefight for Halo 5: Guardians last month in an effort to provide fans with a strictly co-operative, PvE experience that utilizes the same mechanics found in other Warzone game modes.

According to a new announcement from 343 during the recent Halo World Championship 2016, Warzone Firefight will allow up to eight Spartans to band together to overcome “five rounds of increasingly difficult, dynamic objectives set against a timer…” The bad guys will be made up of an assortment of Covenant and Promethean forces, but the mode will also introduce a new tier of “Mythic” enemy bosses, including the new Mythic Warden Eternal. Like Warzone and Warzone Assault, players will be able to call upon an assortment of REQs to aid them in battle.

Gameplay footage of Warzone Firefight was premiered during the Halo World Championship 2016 Finals, which you can check out in the featured section above. Launch date details are still under wraps.

Including Warzone Firefight, Halo 5: Guardians is due for at least four more updates throughout the rest of the year: “Ghosts of Meridian,” “Memories of Reach,” and “Hog Wild.” Stay tuned for updates!

The Coalition Reveals Closed & Open Beta Dates For Gears of War 4, New Multiplayer Details

Gears of War 4 is going into beta as early as the middle of next month, developer The Coalition revealed today.

In an update on the official Gears of War website, the studio says it’s excited to give fans a “first taste and an opportunity to help shape the multiplayer experience in Gears of War 4” with the upcoming ‘global Versus multiplayer beta’ on Xbox One.

It starts on April 18 and, according to the studio, fans who’ve played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox One or Windows 10 will begin to receive tokens in waves for early access. By the way, the timeframe to qualify has also been extended from March 1 to April 11. You just have to log in and play.

The beta will stay active until May 1, but the neat thing is that all Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One will also be invited to join in on the action by April 24 and will be able to play until it ends.

Gears 4 is the first Gears game from the newly-formed The Coalition and is due out this Fall on Xbox One. It’ll feature multiplayer that runs at 60 fps and on dedicated servers with a focus on eSports. Check Out Doom’s Multiplayer In Bethesda’s New Gameplay Trailer, Closed Beta Details Revealed

Arena multiplayer is going back to its roots here in 2016 with the upcoming launch of Bethesda’s Doom. The studio is turning back the clock to a time when twitch reflexes and power-ups reigned supreme while turning up the action to eleven. You’ll see what I mean in the studio’s just-released multiplayer trailer for Doom, which you can check out above.

And, don’t worry. It looks all the gory dismemberment and brutal violence from the game’s latest story mode trailer and initial E3 2015 gameplay is also carrying over the Doom’s fast-paced multiplayer. If you can manage to snag the power-up that transforms your character into a powerful demon, for instance, you’ll be able to satisfy your hunger for victory by biting down on the heads of your opponents.

What’d you think of the trailer? Does the classic arena gameplay of Doom’s multiplayer call to you?

Doom launches on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on May 13.

UPDATE: Bethesda has also updated fans on when the official Doom Closed Beta ends and begins. If you remember way back when, access was promised to anyone who pre-purchased or purchased Wolfenstein: The New Order digitally before May 26, 2014. PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 “Graveyard Variety” DLC Out Now, Character Balance Patch Notes Revealed

After teasing a glimpse of Garden Warfare 2’s first content drop “Graveyard Variety” late last week, PopCap HD shared a new trailer spotlighting the things you can expect to see in the update, now live on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

It features a new map as well as a number of “critical fixes.” Characters have also be rebalanced. The studio recently released the patch notes detailing how they tweaked Rose and explaining other changes and details in some of the new features for Graveyard Variety:

New Features

  • Added new co-op/team vanquish map “Aqua Center” which may seem familiar, yet completely different!
  • Added night version of the Great White North map to the Turf Takeover Playlist
  • Added Hide n’ Find missions to Backyard Battleground
  • Added Bot & Pot Missions to Backyard Battleground
  • Added unique character variant images to group HUD
  • World Options now shows all friends playing the game, not just the joinable ones
  • Added classic setting in options to change primary fire button (PS4 Only)
  • Added Aim Sensitivity slider to now allow more precise control over aim speed (for PC this is broken up into both mouse and gamepad sensitivity)
  • Added ability to select between hold button to aim or toggle button to Aim
  • Added kick player option to the in-game scoreboard for easy access (player hosted modes only)
  • Added difficulty to Pause Menu for some game modes
  • Game Now defaults to common chat in Private Matches
  • Added ability to view scoreboard while vanquished

Critical Fixes

  • Reduced length of round timer between rounds in Multiplayer matches
  • Imp now properly earns XP when in Mech
  • Players can now see other players’ Backyard customizations when visiting their Backyard
  • Players can now see stats on other players stats boards when visiting their Backyard
  • Improved audio for garlic drone primary weapon
  • Setting HUD to “Light” now also hides XP Meter
  • Major improvements to hit reaction “flinching” animations
  • A plethora of quality & bug fixes

Tuning/Balance Notes

Overall:

  • Improved regeneration upgrade for all characters
  • Re-tuned all hit reactions for both players and AI to reduce the flinching effect even more

Rose:

  • Completely re-tuned Rose class, bringing her back into playing as a support role
  • Reduced Rose’s health
  • Major changes to her homing abilities, ineffective at range, requires player to lead target in order to land more hits
  • Slightly reduced rate of fire for Magic Thistles
  • Significantly reduced length a victim is trapped in Time SnareChanged how Goatify ability works so that damage does not break Goatify, creating a more predictable and less jarring experience and lowered time as a goat
  • Slowed down rose variants (Fire, Ice) when charging their weapons to make them more vulnerable.

Citron:

  • Slightly decreased the Party Citron laser damage

Corn:

  • We needed to improve Corn’s ability to be a front-line fighter so we increased his health and also improved his long range damage
  • Reduced Party Corn’s damage output

Chomper:

  • Decreased the digestion time after a chomp escape (i.e. your victim got away using anti-chomp ability like jackhammer)
  • Brought Chompers regeneration delay to parity with all other playable characters
  • Fixed a bug where Chomp Thing’s health regeneration didn’t match his weapon description. He now regenerates health slightly sooner and faster than default
  • Increased Unicorn Chomper’s Rainbow Warp cooldown time
  • Increased goop cooldown so it couldn’t be spammed quite as much

Cactus:

  • Zen Cactus was too damaging and needed some damage and reload adjustments

Imp:

  • Imps tuning focused on ensuring he had a bit more survivability outside of his mech, and also improved his primary weapon slightly
  • Increased Imp health
  • Fixed a bug where the Imp couldn’t receive damage while he is making his Z-Mech phone call (he’s now only invulnerable when the beam of light appears)
  • Reduced Party Imp’s damage output

Super Brainz:

  • Slight cooldown reduction to Super Ultra Ball and Super Multi Ball abilities
  • Minor speed improvement to Turbo Twister but at the cost of decreased his armor while in Turbo Twister
  • Removed the decay from Toxic Brainz legendary meter to make it more useful
  • Damage reduction to Party Brainz

Captain Deadbeard:

  • We wanted to bring Captain Deadbeard closer to damage parity with Cactus, but just slightly below since he also benefits from his close range scatter shot
  • Made some movement speed improvements to his barrel when unlit
  • Made some damage reductions to Captain Partyman.

The Garden Variety update is out now and is about 2.2GB in size.

Halo 5: Guardians – Warzone Firefight Update Teased In New Image, Social Fiesta Playlist Now Live

343 Industries’ latest community letter has new details on content updates coming to Halo 5: Guardians in the near future and some a little further along.

While Halo 5 fans have been treated to free updates arriving at a monthly pace, 343 says Halo 5’s next launch, Ghosts of Meridian, will end up missing March by a few days, launching in early April instead. As usual, “standard sneak peeks, developer commentary, and perhaps even some surprises,” are in store leading up to its release, says the studio.

A tight lid is being kept on Halo 5’s rendition of the popular Firefight mode, arriving in a future update later this year, but 343’s Community Manager, Bravo, was able to share this image:

Halo 5

From what we’ve seen in the latest trailer tease, we know that at least five spartans will be able to party up in a PvE environment while taking advantage of Halo 5’s REQ system. Beyond that, we’re not sure what awaits fans in Warzone Firefight.

As for the more immediate future, Fiesta is this week’s social playlist. “Today, the permanent social playlist shifted into party mode, and Social Fiesta will be available all week long (rather than just the weekend, based on feedback),” says 343. “The game type features random primary and secondary weapons, and is a true roulette wheel of Arena chaos.”

Give it a shot and see what combination of weapons you load-out with!

The Division Year One Overview Reveals Player Trading & New Activities Via Free Content Updates

As with almost any recent triple-A title, Ubisoft and Massive are presenting a thorough post-launch support plan for their upcoming open-world shooter, The Division, that aims to deliver new content both paid and free.

Launching in April, “Incursions” is the first of two free updates and is an end-game group activity where teams “will be able to test their skills as they face seemingly unstoppable enemies to gain high-level weapons and equipment.” This update will also implement player trading, says Massive. Meanwhile, “Conflict” will launch in May with new features to the Dark Zone and a “new incursion in the iconic Columbus Circle.”

Here’s the rundown on The Division’s paid expansions, which were announced to be included in the game’s Season Pass:

Expansion I: Underground – “Available in June, this first major expansion lets players explore the uncharted underworld of New York City. Players will chase deadly enemies with up to three other Agents through an endless maze of tunnels and subways.”

Expansion II: Survival – “Available this summer, this expansion will challenge players to survive as long as possible by gathering essential supplies in a very hostile environment.”

Expansion III: Last Stand – “Next winter, a new threat rises as players and their squad must prepare to defend against a relentless foe.”

The game’s latest trailer offers some insight into how the team intends to keep the game alive after its March 8th launch with new add-ons. You can watch it above.

PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 Gets Micro-Transactions In Latest Marketplace Update

Running low on Garden Warfare 2’s PvZ coins and still miles away from unlocking all the new characters and cosmetics in the game? The latest “add-on” for PopCap’s quirky third-person shooter may help you out, if you’re willing to spend real cash.

Much like its predecessor, Garden Warfare 2 players now have the option to buy in-game currency with real life money. The new marketplace update lets you spend from $2.49 USD for 56,000 coins all the way up to $19.99 USD for 630,000 coins. Below, you’ll find all the available options which can be access from each platform’s respective marketplace:

  • $2.49 for 56,000 coins
  • $4.99 for 120,000 coins
  • $9.99 for 280,000 coins
  • $14.99 for 455,000 coins
  • $19.99 for 630,000 coins

Note: All prices are in USD.

Much like the last Garden Warfare game, the new options likely won’t turn the game into a Pay2Win model as each character and their variants are very bare bones until you actually level them up to unlock upgrades. Even then, they’re not much of an upgrade compared to their vanilla counterparts.

Recently, PopCap announced that they will be ‘nerfing; the Rose class “soon” and will be releasing the game’s first DLC called “Graveyard Variety” very soon. You can read about them both here.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
