Call of Duty Announces ‘Major Community Event’ This Fall, COD 2016 Gameplay Will Be At E3

Call of Duty celebrations are ramping up this year as Activision sets out an exciting roadmap leading up to E3 2016 and beyond.

The publisher announced its future Call of Duty plans in a blog post earlier today, citing last January as the month with the highest number of Call of Duty players ever recorded.

Unsurprisingly, Infinity Ward, who recently announced their return to an “innovative” new Call of Duty project in 2016, will have something to show at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. While Call of Duty 2016 will get its time in the spotlight during gaming’s most exciting week of the year, Activision revealed that they will not have a booth on the E3 show floor.

“In June, we’re going to be at E3 showcasing gameplay from Infinity Ward’s ambitious new game. We’re looking forward to sharing exciting new details about the next great Call of Duty game in partnership with our friends at PlayStation. We’re proud to be participating in this premier video game event, but won’t have an Activision booth on the show floor.

Meanwhile, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is, of course, headed to the Call of Duty Championship, a $3 million global tournament, later in the year. Interestingly, Activision’s blog also makes mention of a “major community event” that will give fans “insight and access to the world of Call of Duty.”

“We’re also going to be celebrating the community this fall at the Call of Duty Championship, marking the epic conclusion of the first season of the Call of Duty World League, and holding a major community event that will give fans special insight and access to the world of Call of Duty.”

Activision says fans ‘shouldn’t be surprised to find them in some other unexpected places as well.’

In 2011, Activision and Infinity Ward, along with Sledgehammer Games, hosted the one-time-only Call of Duty Experience (COD XP) that celebrated the coming launch of Modern Warfare 3. Could a similar community event return for Infinity Ward’s next title?

Keep your sights on MP1st for more Call of Duty updates.

PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 – PopCap Teases Upcoming “Graveyard Variety” DLC, Addresses Upcoming Rose ‘Nerf’

Zombies who are sick and tired of being harassed by Rose — one of the overpowerful new Plant classes in Garden Warfare 2 — will be happy to know their pain and suffering is coming to end, according to a recent update from PopCap.

Developers had this to say about one of the biggest imbalances in Garden Warfare 2’s otherwise enjoyable multiplayer:

First and foremost: Rose. This is an important topic for many of you and we’ve received tons of valuable player feedback related to her ability to deal damage in the game. Rose was conceived as a support role/specialist, not a primary damage dealer, and we’ve been working on rebalancing her to fit that role. This fix is going to be implemented very soon and we thank you for your patience and incredible support while we get it ready.”

The studio didn’t share the exactly what it’s going to do to address the character, but it’s a worthy guess that they’ll revert her back to her ‘beta’ self, where her damage and homing ability were much more suitable for a Support class.

In addition, PopCap also teased the very first DLC for Garden Warfare 2, titled “Graveyard Variety”. If the first Garden Warfare is anything to go by (which received a content pack similarly titled “Garden Variety“), it will likely feature new character variants, maps, and alternate skills for the cast. It’s also possible that add-on will also introduce a returning GW1 map:

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 – Multiplayer Review

It’s been two years since the release of PopCap’s colorful and easy-going third-person shooter, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. While the spin-off was a commendable first entry into the world of shooters, it had a few short comings, including a lack of content outside of its multiplayer and Garden Ops modes. Despite that, Garden Warfare was the first shooter in a long time that I had a genuinely fun time with.

Enter Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, a game that promises to be bigger, badder, and more content-packed than its predecessor while tackling what issues were present in the first game. But does PopCap actually deliver on these claims? To put it simply, yes it does. Garden Warfare 2 feels like a fully-fleshed-out game thanks to the numerous new features inspired by fan feedback. But even with a roughly 6-hour single player campaign, nothing compares to Garden Warfare 2’s biggest and probably the most important feature, the Backyard Battleground.

Backyard Battleground

rendition1.img-3

An overview of the Backyard Battleground area

If you haven’t been keeping up with Garden Warfare 2 news, Backyard Battleground serves as the game’s playable central hub, presenting everything the game has to offer in one giant and stunning explorable area. To be perfectly honest, its size is pretty intimidating once you realize there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye. Between both the Plants and Zombies bases are portals or interactive objects that let you hop in to any multiplayer mode to face off against actual players, AI bots, or even both.

In addition to bots in multiplayer modes, PopCap also made it possible to start up a private match and customize the settings. These range from choosing exactly who you face to some “craaaazzzy” options like infinite ammo, super speed, or low gravity. All of it can be played with either friends or completely alone with AI companions and/or enemies. PopCap didn’t forget about those who love Garden Warfare’s tower defense mode, Garden/Graveyard Ops, but don’t have anyone to play it with. You can now summon AI companions from the selection of characters to help you defend your tower.

Garden Warfare 2

Speaking of characters, the progression system has been completely overhauled in Garden Warfare 2. No longer do you have to complete silly challenges or play a certain way to level up your character. Previously, it often made the game a drag to play if you wanted to level up. Instead, PopCap introduced the traditional leveling system found in most of today’s shooters where you can level up your character by simply playing the game. Leveling up is a lot easier too, especially if you happen to have the double XP buff active from completing quests. Overall, it’s a step in the right direction.

To accompany the new leveling system, a ‘prestige’ system of sorts has also been implemented so that once a character’s variant reaches the max level of 10, you can promote it — up to fives times in total. Each time, you earn a new title and a new character perk for every 5th and 9th rank, along with 20,000 coins. As for the characters themselves, specifically the new ones that have been introduced, they’re generally balanced and fun to play with and complement the original cast. That is, aside from one character who can make playing any multiplayer game a living nightmare. This, of course, is none other than The Rose.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn

Garden Warfare 2

Pictured above on the left: the most menacing character in the game, The Rose.

What makes The Rose a nightmare to play against is a combination of the amount of damage her main weapon does and how aggressive her tracking ability is. At first, it doesn’t sound that bad, but if you’re playing against a few Roses in any game mode, it’s a bit much. Her main weapon is able to hit anyone from any range just by glancing at their general direction and makes the majority of the Plant team — even the Cactus — obsolete. To make things worse, once a Rose unlocks the Enhanced Homing perk, her main weapon can aggressively track any Zombies to the point that every shot fired will hit them, resulting in a quick vanquish, effectively locking down the Zombie team.

Aside from that particular character class needing a pretty big ‘nerf’, Garden Warfare 2 has a few other small issues. The series’ main multiplayer game mode, Turf Takeover, which features both the Herbal Assault and Garden & Graveyards game types, suffers from a lack of maps. Currently, there are only 4 maps with each game type receiving two. Also, when it comes to Turf Takeover, I found myself enjoying the maps from the first game a bit more. Some seem to favor one side more than the other, such as The Great White North, which heavily favors the Plant side. The first area, for example, provides little to no cover for the Zombies and pretty much turns the match into target practice for the Plants.

Garden Warfare 2

Sadly, despite all the great features PopCap added in the game, one feature that the community was pretty vocal about did not make the cut. There is no online split-screen for Garden Warfare 2, but seeing as how the frame rate tends to drop while playing split-screen offline, it was likely a wise choice to ditch it. If you must play split-screen with someone, you won’t be missing out on much anyways.

As I previously stated, every game mode features the ability to have AI-controlled characters populate your game. If playing against the computer isn’t much of your thing, you and your split-screen buddy can always discover all the hidden areas to explore. And, trust me, you’ll need all the help you can get.

More Than Meets The Eye

Garden Warfare 2

Garden Warfare 2 is packed with content right out of the gate and the amount of activities to participate in may even be overwhelming to some. Even at face value, you haven’t really scratched the surface, as a good chunk of the content is actually hidden away, just waiting to be discovered. Without spoiling too much, you’ll be sent on two different quests via hidden NPCs to find hidden collectibles scattered throughout both the Backyard Battleground itself or various multiplayer levels.

If item collection isn’t your cup of tea, there’s still a lot to do, including two different ‘endless’ modes. Flag of Power is PopCap’s take on a King of the Hill. One team must take control of a flag located in the middle of the Backyard Battleground and defend it from the opposing team. There’s also an end-game Defend the Tower mode that holds some of the game’s best loot, including legendary character variants, if you’re able to score high enough to earn them.

Garden Warfare 2

4.5 / 5

Garden Warfare 2 suffers from a few annoying problems like character balance and a lack of maps for Turf Takeover. But if PopCap’s history and how they handled the original Garden Warfare is anything to go by, these two issues will be addressed swiftly in Garden Warfare 2’s post-launch support. Even as it, PopCap’s shooter is once again among the most fun out there.

Overall, Garden Warfare 2 is a vast improvement from the first game and I was thoroughly impressed with all of the new features added to an already solid core gameplay experience. It’s more than enough to warrant dropping $60 USD on it if you happen to love the original, like I did. It’s also worth mentioning that all post-release content will once again be free of charge.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare’s Final Gnome Puzzle Solved, Nets Big Rewards & Easter Egg

Alongside the time-consuming hunt for all 54 Golden Gnomes in both the Backyard Battleground and multiplayer maps, Garden Warfare 2 players are left with another challenging puzzle. With over 4,000 combinations, the Gnome Puzzle asks players to input a code with a series of symbols:

YfuryH0

Thanks, imgur user “furyh0”!

As intimidating as it looks, that didn’t stop the Garden Warfare 2 community from coming up with the answer and getting their hands on some very rewarding loot. Thankfully, finding the code didn’t take as long as expected, as one Redditor figured it out. It is:

Watering Can, Flamingo, Fence, and Flower Pot.

Upon entering the answer correctly, a cut-scene displays the all the treasure chests that await you, including a legendary item and 500,000 coins. There’s also a pretty neat easter egg reward which is a hat that will alter the art style of the game to look like more like a comic book, as seen in the screen shot below:

Halo 5: Guardians DLC Roadmap Includes Firefight & Halo: Reach-Inspired Content

Halo 5: Guardians’ latest content update, Hammer Forge, launched only a few hours ago, but already developer 343 Industries is laying out the game’s content roadmap for the rest of 2016.

According to the studio’s plan, today’s launch marks the half way point for Halo 5: Guardians’ spring/summer content calendar of updates. That means fans have four more packs to look forward to in 2016, all for free. In an update on Xbox’s official news site, 343 Community Manager Andy “Bravo” Dudynsky teased what’s ahead with the image you see above. Here it is listed out:

Out Now:

Click the links for patch notes

Coming 2016:

  • Ghosts of Meridian
  • Memories of Reach
  • Hog Wild
  • Warzone Firefight

If we’re allowed to speculate for a moment, we’re not quite sure what “Ghosts of Meridian” might entail, but we think it’s safe to say that “Memories of Reach” will get Halo: Reach fans hyped up with armor skins and weapon models from Bungie’s last-ever Halo title. Meanwhile, “Hog Wild” seems to suggest something along the lines of Warthog racing or battle-car-style game modes.

“Warzone Firefight” is quite clearly the one to look out for if you are a fan of Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach’s co-operative Firefight mode. It sounds like it’s coming to Halo 5: Guardians with a bit of a Warzone twist, REQs ‘n’ all). Here’s what the studio had to say about it:

“Among the vast array of new modes coming to Halo over the next several months is one that our fans have repeatedly asked us to deliver – Firefight. The new mode, called “Warzone Firefight”, will bring PvE to Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer and let players battle together against common foes (and truly show off their custom Spartans to boot!) That’s all we’ll say for now, but trust us, we can’t wait to tell you more about Warzone Firefight in the coming months.”

You can catch a small glimpse of new mode in the teaser at the end of Hammer Storm’s recent launch trailer. It starts at about 1:10 and shows five Spartans taking on Covenant and Promethean foes.

[youtube id=”TE4ESGTv5J8″]

So far, 343 and Microsoft have shown and impressive level of post-launch support for Halo 5: Guardians and its nice to see it continue into 2016, especially with nods to classic Halo titles and fan-favorite game modes like Firefight.

What’s your perspective on Halo 5: Guardians after launch? Is it panning out the way you expected?

DICE Drops First Tease For Star Wars Battlefront’s Outer Rim DLC, Greedo & Nien Nunb Spotted

Following closely behind Star Wars Battelfront’s major content update yesterday morning, developer DICE dropped a small artwork tease for the game’s first paid DLC pack arriving some time next month.

It’s called Outer Rim and looks a little something like this:

rendition1.img

As YouTuber BattlefrontUpdates pointed out in his latest video, two possibilities for new DLC heroes are likely the Rodian bounty hunter Greedo and the Sullustan Rebel pilot, Nien Nunb. You can spot both of them quite clearly in the very center of the artwork above.

As DICE mentioned in its previous announcement mapping out incoming DLC for 2016 and beyond, the setting of the game’s first expansion will center around the “factories of Sullust” and “Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine.” By the looks of it, the latter is what’s pictured above.

Besides the setting, the only thing confirmed for now is that Battlefront’s Outer Rim DLC will launch sometime in March with two-weeks of early access going to Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass owners. Battlefront’s community manager, “Sledgehammer70”, also told fans to be on the lookout for news on “more maps, weapons, star cards, heroes, level cap increase, and an all-new multiplayer game mode,” in the coming weeks.

Insurgency: Sandstorm Coming To PC & Consoles In 2017, Powered By Unreal Engine 4

Independent developer New World Interactive is teaming up with publisher Focus Home Interactive to bring a new version of their tactical PC shooter, Insurgency, to a much broader audience.

Insurgency

Insurgency: Sandstorm is powered by Unreal Engine 4 “and will be a major visual and technological upgrade to Insurgency,” says NWI’s latest press release. Not only will it re-launch on Windows, OS X, and Linux sometime in 2017, it will also be the first time Insurgency appears on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While a console launch is a first-time endeavor for the team, NWI says Sandstorm will retain what makes Insurgency unique and challenging and will “stay true to its PC roots…”

In addition, the studio says Insurgency: Sandstorm “will contain some exciting new features such as a new story mode and eSports framework” and will be “built from the ground up with competitive multiplayer, console split-screen, and singleplayer in mind.” According to the game’s description, the setting of the game will “focus on a squad of characters as they face increasingly challenging chapters, from the invasion of Iraq in 2003 through the insurrection period and leading to the present day.”

The current version of Insurgency launched on PC, Mac, and Linux in 2014 as a Source Engine game and became one of our favorite shooters of the year. You’ll find it on Steam for $14.99 USD. We praised it highly in our review and are very excited to hear about this new Unreal-powered reboot coming to PC and consoles in 2017.

Keep your sights on MP1st for more Insurgency updates.

Check Out Battlefield Hardline: Betrayal DLC’s Four New Maps – Trailer

The multiplayer team at Visceral Games is giving Battlefield fans a first look at what’s new in the upcoming content drop for its cops vs. criminals shooter.

Battlefield Hardline’s Betrayal DLC was announced earlier this month as the shooter’s fourth and final multiplayer expansion. Buyers will get four new maps, shown above, along with seven new weapons, two new vehicles, new Assignments, and new Legendary weapon camos.

Old-school Battlefield fans might be particularly interested in the new Chinatown map, which we learned last week is actually a reimagining of Battlefield 3’s Grand Bazaar. It now takes place at night and takes advantage of the Frostbite engine’s latest and greatest lighting techniques.

Battlefield Hardline Premium subscribers will also get access to two brand new features, the Gun Bench and Gun Range, where cops and robbers can custom paint their weapons and test them in the range.

Check out the latest trailer and tell us what you think! Betrayal DLC is out this March, first for Premium members.

Halo 5: Guardians Gets A Permanent Social Playlist, New Hammer Storm REQs Revealed

Between its sandbox story campaign, a world-building forge mode, epic Big Team Battles, and intense Arena modes, Halo has always been a game with a little something for everyone.

In Halo 5: Guardians, developer 343 Industries really stepped up the competition with some of the most balanced Arena multiplayer we’ve seen in a Halo title yet, and with a competitive ranking system now blanketing all 4v4 modes, it’s exactly what Arena needed.

However, if you’re someone like me who can often take competition a little too seriously, especially when your rank is on the line, it can be difficult to enjoy Halo 5’s Arena modes without a pre-formed team at your side or when you’re perhaps not in the mood to bring your “A” game.

If that sounds like you, you’ll be happy to hear that 343 has finally implemented new Social Playlist that will have a permanent home in Arena multiplayer. Live now, the playlist will rotate game modes on a frequent basis, including new game types and community modes. The studio says they’re also “keeping an eye on your feedback on matching/skill matchmaking within social playlists.” Kicking off this week’s featured mode is Social CTF. So, if you’re craving that Halo goodness but in a more casual environment, check it out.

Next Friday, February 23, on Twitch.tv/Halo and The Halo Channel, the studio is putting together a “Hammer Storm Live Stream” with the intent of showing off new game types, a new Arena map, new REQs, and more from Halo 5’s upcoming content update. In yesterday’s Halo Waypoint update, the team threw in a few more peeks at some of what’s coming later this month.

Also, here’s the first official screen of the new Arena map, Torque:

If you’re interested in a few close-ups of some of the new armor variants and weapon skins, be sure to drop by Halo Waypoint.

Hammer Storm is a free content update launching later this month that will feature new ball game modes like Grifball and Assault, as well the ability to create custom ball games like Ricochet and Oddball. It also brings the return of Fiesta Slayer. You can read more about Halo 5’s Hamer Storm update here.

Keep your sights on MP1st for more Halo 5: Guardians news updates.

Smite: Battleground Of The Gods Coming To PlayStation 4 – Closed Beta Sign Ups Now Live

If I had to pick a favorite game released in the past few years, without a doubt it would be the third-person MOBA, Smite, from Hi-Rez Studios that’s currently only available Xbox One and PC.

Finally, PlayStation 4 owners who’ve been waiting for the team to announcement if and when the free-to-play game will launch on Sony’s platform got the news they want to hear. Hi-Rez just recently told fans that Smite will indeed come to the PlayStation 4 and that the studio will hold a closed beta “soon.”

Check out the announcement video above and sign up here to opt-in for the closed beta.

Smite is a free to play MOBA played with a third-person view of the action that includes over 72 playable characters such as Athena, Hercules, Loki, Thor, Zeus, and the recently released Raijin.

Battlefield Hardline’s New DLC Map Is A Remake Of Battlefield 3’s “Grand Bazaar” – New Video

With Battlefield Hardline’s fourth and final content drop, revealed just last week, Visceral Games is turning back the clock by bringing back one of Battlefield 3’s most popular multiplayer maps.

In Battlefield Hardline: Betrayal, players will find the new map “Chinatown” awfully familiar. As the studio’s latest behind-the-scenes video reveals, that’s because it’s a direct reimagining of Grand Bazaar from Battlefield 3, known as one of the game’s more action-packed, medium-sized maps.

Senior Environmental Artist Jonathan Hackett walks viewers through the process of bringing the iconic map back and updating it for Battlefield Hardline in the video above.

Pretty neat! Was Grand Bazaar one of your favorites? Happy to see it return in Battlefield Hardline?

Battlefield Hardline: Betrayal DLC launches first for Premium subscribers in March.

The latest addition to Visceral Game’s cops vs. criminals shooter, Battlefield Hardline, will take weapon customization to a new level while letting players test out their creations in their own personal shooting range.

The studio detailed some of the new features in a recent blog update, revealing the extent to which you’ll be able to personalize your weapons. It sounds like you’ll be able to go a little bit further than simply altering the paint job. Check it out:

Gun Bench & Gun Range Features

  • Personalize up to five primary weapons with:
    • Reticles
    • Colors
    • Custom Camos
    • Wear & Tear
  • Edit up to 16 uniforms for any class and faction
  • Equip weapon and uniform in Loadout screen
  • The Gun Bench is a part of the new Gun Range, which also includes an area for target practice

The Gun Bench and Gun Range will be available in March 2016 alongside the launch of Battlefield Hardline’s Betrayal DLC, which delivers four new maps, seven new weapons, two new vehicles, new Assignments, and new Legendary weapon camos.

Both the Gun Bench and Gun Range features are exclusive to Battlefield Hardline Premium subscribers, so you’ll need a membership in order to access them.
