Cheaper, Multiplayer-Only Version Of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Now On Steam For A Limited-Time

For a limited time, Activision is offering a multiplayer-only version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 to Steam users for a reduced price.

The “Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Starter Pack” costs $14.99 USD and gives buyers access to “Public Ranked Multiplayer matches and features including Weapon Paint Shop, Gunsmith, Arena, Freerun, Theater, and the Black Market,” according to the Steam page.

Starter Pack players will still be able to purchase COD Points and the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Season Pass, but will only get access to the multiplayer maps and multiplayer Supply Drops — not the zombies content. They’re also not restricted from partying up with friends who own the full game, though some limitations to Custom Games, Zombies, or Campaign will apply. An icon designating ownership of the Starter Pack will appear over players’ names in-game as well.

Alternatively, Starter Pack owners can upgrade at any time to a full version of the game with the price paid for the Starter Pack automatically deducted from the price of the full game or Digital Deluxe Edition. All progress, including COD Points, will carry over to the full game.

Here’s everything the Starter Pack does not include:

  • Zombies game mode
  • Campaign game mode
  • Ability to play in Multiplayer custom games
  • Ability to Prestige (your level will be capped at 55 in the Starter Pack) Access to mod tools or modded content (once released)
  • Access to unranked server browser (once released)
  • Ability to Fresh Start your profile
  • The ability to access Dead Ops Arcade II and Nightmares mode

Steam users can pick it up the Multiplayer Starter Pack on the store until February 29. As of this writing, it’s not clear if Activision or Treyarch has plans to offer something similar to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 users. On Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is already a multiplayer-only title, but with less limitations and access to all zombies content.

While you’re not really getting a “discount” on the full title, per se, the the Multiplayer Starter Pack is a neat new idea for a triple-A shooter like Call of Duty that, at the very least, offers a reasonable purchase alternative. After all, Multiplayer is arguably the most popular feature of these games, and to be able to get permanent access to all of it, minus the ability to Prestige, for only $15 is pretty cool. What do you think? Should more multiplayer-focused games try a similar tactic?

MKX – Leaked Images Of Krimson Ermac Skin, Apocalypse & Medieval Packs, & New Mobile Unlocks

This past Thursday was a pretty eventful day for Mortal Kombat X fans as NetherRealm Studios showcased its second of four Kombat Pack 2 characters, Leather Face, in a Kombat Kast dedicated to the horror icon.

However, Leather Face wasn’t the only thing that we got a look at. During the early hours of the morning, a YouTuber uploaded a video, which was taken down almost immediately, that showcased some the new skins we saw a very brief glimpse of during the Mortal Kombat XL announcement video.

Thankfully for us, a Reddit user managed to save the images before they were taken down, which you can view below. It showcases the new Krimson Ermac skin along with the Apocalypse and Medieval skin packs, among other things.

343 Reveals Halo 5’s Big February Update, “Valentine’s Double Date” Playlist Now Live

Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries has got new details to share on the game’s upcoming content update, which will once again be free for all players later this month.

But first, here’s what’s up this weekend: 343 has brought a special Valentine’s Day-themed playlist to the table called Valentine’s Double Date. As the name suggests, the game mode is based on Team Doubles, but with a few festive alterations.

Here are the specific settings for “Valentine’s Double Date”:

  • 2v2 Social Slayer
  • Custom-themed and colored Breakout maps, with modified geometry and weapon placement
  • Halo 2 BR starts
  • Score to win: 30 Kills

Good news for Halo fans seeking more social playlists: 343 says the multiplayer team will be “making some adjustments to make social experiences more available (and more varied) moving forward.” Starting next week with CTF, a permanent social playlist with rotating game modes will be added to the main Arena menu, though it will mean less frequent special weekend playlists.

Don’t forget, new (and returning) ball game modes are coming with Halo 5: Guardian’s next big update, which 343 has now revealed as “Hammer Storm.” It arrives later this month and adds Assault and Grifball to the mix, including the ability to create modes like Oddball and Ricochet in Custom Games. Fiesta Slayer also returns.

Along with new game modes comes new maps, weapons, and REQs. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the new stuff:

Halo 5

Hammer Storm will also make significant updates to Spartan Customization by revamping the available color palette for Spartan armor and Emblems.

“For Armor, we now allow individual selection of Primary and Secondary colors, and for Emblems, individual selection Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary colors,” UI Art Lead Kevin McGinnis explained. “There are no restrictions, so players can choose 2 of the same color to create a totally different looking emblem.”

New changes include:

  • Expanded the color palette for armor and emblems from 32 to 60 colors
  • Replaced the emblem harmonies with simple, primary, secondary and tertiary color options (see below)
  • These new options have no restrictions – you can make any 2 of them the same color and get a completely different looking emblem shape
  • These new colors carry over to Waypoint as well

colors_emblem-f76d72b699644c50bd1be8318f5464ae

Lastly, here’s some concept art for the new Arena map, Torque:

More from Halo 5’s Hammer Storm update will be revealed later this month during 343’s next live stream on February 26, so keep an eye out!

Any guess on what some of the new REQs might be?

Latest Mortal Kombat X Stream Looks At Leather Face’s New Moves

After getting our first in-depth look at Tri-Borg during the ESL finals, NetherRealm Studios is back once again ready to showcase another one of Kombat Pack 2’s characters via their latest Kombat Kast.

Who is it? It’s pretty simple, especially if you’ve been following co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series on Twitter recently. The character in question is none other than chainsaw-wielding, human flesh-wearing mass-murdering Leather Face from “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” movies.

You can check out the Kombat Kast showcasing Leather Face in it’s entirety here, or simply view the video above to see his reveal. Alongside the Kombat Kast, NetherRealm also posted an instagram video showcasing one of Leather Face’s brutalities:

A video posted by Netherrealm (@netherrealmstudios) on

Additionally, it should also be noted that in the next upcoming weeks, Kombat Kast streams will become more frequent, as they will focus on character showcases, character balances, and more.

Mortal Kombat XL and Kombat Pack 2 is set to launch on March 1 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.

New App Aims To Make Partying Up & Meeting New Gamers A Breeze, Beta Sign Ups Now Live

As technology grows and gaming matures, game makers are able to conceive massive open worlds shared by millions of gamers or craft finely-tuned competitive multiplayer experiences with innovative new social features. But what good does the push toward social or shared-world gaming do if the simple and mundane act of finding other people to play with still hasn’t evolved past sending awkward and random party invites.

Party Up Founder Mat Houchens says his new project is “an application that allows you to find another gamer in real time who is looking to play the same game as you.” It sounds stupidly simple, but Mat hopes that the work he and his team are doing will have a major impact on an often overlooked aspect of online gaming.

“We want to increase your experience playing online so you play the games you already love even more and make new friends along the way,” reads Party Up’s website. “Playing online with people you know makes the experience better and we want to make that process simpler.”

We’ve all been there: in the mood to socialize over a few rounds of Domination, form a capable team that will ‘steamroll kids’ in Slayer, or combine forces to conquer a challenging Raid fight, but none of your friends are online. You text them to log on, but, darn, sometimes real life just gets in the way. You’re left with three options: hop around from team to team in random matchmaking, send out random party invites and pray for a pleasant voice communication experience that won’t result in your mother being insulted, or log off and hope for better luck next time

It can be a bummer and, aside from digging through the internet to find the proper forums or LFG (looking-for-group) sites, there aren’t many universal solutions. I recently caught up with Mat to find out if Party Up, which is still very early in development, might do the trick.

MP1st: Party Up is an app that lets gamers find other people to play with online and in real time. Can you explain what you mean by “real time” and give an example of what the process of finding someone else to play with might look like?

Mat: “When you want to game, often times it’s not planned and is spur of the moment. What we mean by real time is you only see posts that are recent enough to still be valid. When you are looking for someone to play right then, you don’t want to have to wait hours, you want someone within minutes of your desire to play. So our app will have a maximum shelf life for a post and then disappear forever so only relevant posts remain viewable. We’ll be sharing screenshots in future updates that will shine more light on the exact process.”

MP1st: Gamers often use “LFG sites” within their own community for a specific title, but Party Up’s aim is to broaden that service to multiple games and multiple platforms. Do you see it being primarily used for co-operative titles, or do you see Party Up also being an option for gamers to create entire multiplayer lobbies, like a 4v4 Custom Game in Halo, for example?

Mat: “I think that’s just one of many examples it can be used for. Any game that you can play with someone remotely online will be a potential use for Party Up to help connect gamers looking to play.”

MP1st: What are some of of your favorite Party Up features that might stand out from other LFG sites?

Mat: “We’re exploring API integration options that allow our users to send messages and add people directly without leaving the site. That accompanied with real time discussion and cross platform and multiple game support should help increase the desire to use our application to find gamers.”

MP1st: Do you have a time-frame for how long the beta might last? What sort of feedback are you hoping to gather?

Mat: “It will start with a closed, invite only beta with the first wave being select groups that sign up prior to launch. We’ll give the first waves of users the ability to invite up to 10 friends to help increase the user base slowly for system load testing and to allow the user base to expand at a controllable level. We’re looking for feedback from users on what they think would make the experience even better. We even have a process ready to go for co-creation so users can help prioritize upcoming features.”

MP1st: So, how did the idea for Party Up come to fruition? Do you feel that support for group or clan-finding in multiplayer games is lacking today?

Mat: “I can’t even count how many times I wanted to play a game but didn’t have anyone online at the time and got stuck playing with a random lobby and the experience just sucked. It’s more fun to play with people you know and that’s the goal: to help forge new friendships and increase a player’s experience while gaming. I think it’s too hard to find new friends online to play with and I know from my prior communities I’ve built that it can create lifelong friendships and everyone should have the opportunity.”

MP1st: After launch, are there any future and, perhaps, more ambitious plans for Party Up that you can tell us about?

Mat: “While our website will be responsive and mobile friendly, we do have goals to get this as a mobile app that you can download to provide push notification support to help let you know when there’s opportunities to play based on the people online.

“We do have a lot of future features that are planned after the beta is released but those will have to remain with us for the time being,” he said with a smile.

However, Mat was kind enough to provide us with a first-ever screenshot of a work-in-progress mock-up of what Party Up might look like in-browser. He notes that games in the background aren’t yet in their respective category and are included for display purposes only.

PartyUp

Mat and his team plan to have Party Up’s first closed beta up and running by early April, though more concrete details are coming later this month. While there is no crowd-funding site associated with the project, Mat says that “the best thing for us would be to share the homepage with the sign up form to help spread the word about signing up for the beta. The more users we have when we open the beta the better the experience will be for all.”

If it sounds interesting to you, here are the links you’ll need to keep up with Party Up’s development and get involved in the upcoming beta:

Infinity Ward Officially Confirmed As Developer For “Innovative” New Call of Duty Title In 2016

Activision has officially confirmed that long-running Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward, makers of the Modern Warfare series, is expected to launch an “innovative” new Call of Duty title this year.

As the company announced the news during its fourth quarter 2015 earnings call earlier today, Infinity Ward similarly shared its excitement on Twitter:

In addition to the news, Activision also revealed Call of Duty as the “#1 selling franchise in North America seventh year in a row” and that the series has “surpassed 250M units sold life-to-date globally with over $15B in total sales.” Meanwhile, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has seen a “record Season Pass attach rate for downloadable content.”

As for later this year, Activision expects a “new innovative Call of Duty title from Infinity Ward…”

If I may add a touch of speculation to the hardly unexpected announcement, the way Activision worded the news suggest to me that Infinity Ward’s next project will not be the rumored “Modern Warfare Collection.” Yes, the word “innovative” is a marketing term that is often thrown around, but it’s also a way to describe something “new” or “forward-moving,” and, in this case, I think it was mentioned on purpose.

Either way, I expect we’ll find out relatively soon as we approach the month of May, which is typically when we learn a thing or two about the upcoming Call of Duty game.

Still, I’m interested to hear what you think. Drop your comments below!

Bungie Confirms “Large” Destiny Expansion For Spring 2016, Full Sequel Expected In 2017

After remaining awfully quiet about the future of its popular shared-world console shooter, Destiny, over the past few weeks, Bungie is finally opening up and sharing some of the studio’s major plans for the coming months and into next year.

On the topic of Destiny during Activision’s fourth quarter 2015 earnings call today, the company announced a “large new expansion in 2016 with full game sequel expected to launch in 2017” in one of three bullet points:

  • The Taken King expansion launched in September with record digital attach rates
  • Over 25M registered users have logged nearly 3B hours in-game
  • Large new expansion in 2016 with full game sequel expected to launch in 2017

Destiny Community Manager David “DeeJ” Dague provided a few more details over on the studio’s official blog” that directly addressed the game’s fans:

Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability.

Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017.

As work wraps up in the weeks ahead, look for more details about the Spring content, as well as more information about our bigger projects in the months that follow.

That’s about it for specifics, but we expect at least some satisfaction from the Destiny community as we learn about Bungie’s general plans and Destiny’s overall future.

Any takers on what Destiny’s next expansion might be about? Hit us up in the comments!

New Rainbow Six Siege Patch Adds Dedicated Servers To Custom Games, Fixes Gameplay Exploits

Rainbow Six Siege is getting another big update mid-February for both PC and consoles that will introduce a few new features and also clean up some of the mess that the game’s last update (Black Ice) left behind.

PC users will get their hands on Update 2.1 today, February 11, while PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users can look forward to it next week, February 16. Ubisoft weighs in the patch size at 1.2 GB.

You can check out the full list of changes on Ubisoft’s official page, but Siege-ers will be happy to know that bugs and exploits like the broken headshot hit detection and invisible Kapkan traps have been looked after. There’s a lot of good stuff, actually, so be sure to follow the link above.

For now, here are the details on what is likely the update’s biggest new addition: dedicated servers for Custom Games and Spectator Camera.

Custom Games and Spectator Camera on dedicated servers

“10 player Custom Games can now be hosted on dedicated servers, which offers a fair gameplay environment that better suits competition. Dedicated servers means no host advantage, better stability, and makes it harder to cheat. We also are making the Spectator Camera feature available on dedicated servers, allowing an 11th person to observe matches held on those servers.

There are currently limitations on using said feature. We do plan on making it more accessible and improving the feature over time, but wanted to share it today with you.”

Current limitations:

  • There must be 10 players for a Custom Game on dedicated servers to start.
  • In order to create a game with a Spectator, the spectator has to be the one creating said game as Spectator.
  • In that case, there will be 10 players and 1 spectator in a match.
  • Only one spectator can be present in a Custom Match hosted on dedicated servers.
  • Even though it is on dedicated servers, if the match creator quits, the lobby is disbanded.
  • These matches are invite only.
  • You will have 10 minutes to fill the lobby and start to game to keep the match on a dedicated server.
  • There is currently no way to return to an already started match if you leave or disconnect.
  • As the creator, you won’t be able to create a new Custom Game on dedicated servers for 10 minutes if you shut down your previous Custom Game hosted on dedicated servers.

In order to launch a Custom Game on dedicated servers, from the main menu, select:

  • MULTIPLAYER
  • CUSTOM GAME
  • ONLINE
  • CREATE
  • CREATE NEW PLAYLIST (or select one you already made)
    • Fill Playlist Name
    • Press Add a Match, then edit the details of your match and save your playlist.
  • Select any of your previously created playlists, this will bring up the CREATE GAME panel.
  • Decide whether you want to Create as Player or Create as Spectator.
  • Select Server Type: Dedicated Server
  • Allow Spectator will be automatically set to off, however you can join yourself as a Spectator.

Data Centers can be selected for Custom Games hosted on dedicated servers

“If players or spectators do not wish for the game to be hosted in their default region’s data center, they will be able to change when creating the game, by changing the selection from the Data Center category.”

List of Data center abbreviations and full names:

  • default (based on ping)
  • eus (US East)
  • cus (US Central)
  • scus (US South Central)
  • wus (US West)
  • sbr (Brazil South)
  • neu (Europe North)
  • weu (Europe West)
  • eas (Asia East)
  • seas (Asia South East)
  • eau (Australia East)

Visceral Reveals Battlefield Hardline: Betrayal DLC, Launches With Gun Bench and Gun Range Features

This March, Visceral Games will deliver Battlefield Hardline‘s fourth and final multiplayer expansion included in the title’s still-running season pass, Battlefield Hardline Premium.

Battlefield Hardline: Betrayal DLC will launch with four new maps, including Alcatraz, Cemetery, Chinatown, and Thin Ice — an interesting line-up of locations. Owners will also get seven new weapons and two new vehicles along with new Assignments and Legendary weapon camos.

Lastly, Betrayal will finally deliver the previously promised Gun Bench Super Feature, which, as far as we know, will let players paint their favorite weapons in much greater detail. Then, you’ll be able to test your weapons out in the new Gun Range. Visceral is saving details for a later date, but both sound like neat additions to the game.

In the content update that will launch alongside March’s DLC, every Battlefield Hardline player will also get access to eleven new weapons and new server presets. Gold Battlepacks will also begin to reward weapon license vouchers at random, which Visceral says is a “Distinguished class item that unlocks an entire weapon license.”

Battlefield Hardline’s Getaway DLC launched late last month with the new Competitive Matchmaking feature, including skill-based matchmaking and new competitive ranks.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Black Market Gets Updated With New Weapons & Gear

New items have been added to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s Black Market on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, including brand new personalization items and five new weapons that can be earned through Supply Drops.

Along with a set of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Call of Duty: World at War-themed calling cards, there are also three new weapon camos and two new outfits for each Specialist character.

Some of the new weapons are a little out there, like the new sword weapon called Fury’s Song and a crow bar called Iron Jim. However, the MK Garand is a nice throwback to World at War while the Marshal 16 and NX Shadowclaw seem like a pretty interesting pieces of tech.

If you’re not keen on grinding through Supply Drops to see what all of the new items look like, popular Call of Duty YouTubers TmarTn, Chaos, and PrestigeIsKey all have a number of videos up showing off the new gear in action. Tom Clancy’s The Division Open Beta Announced, Starts February 18 With Early-Access On Xbox One

A new beta testing period for Tom Clancy’s The Division is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC later this month, Ubisoft and Massive announced today.

Unlike the closed beta that took place late last month, the upcoming beta will be open to all players on all three platforms. Anyone will be able to pre-load the content starting on February 16, though servers won’t be available until February 18 for Xbox One users or February 19 for PlayStation 4 and PC users. According to the announcement, the open beta will run until February 21 and will feature the same content that was available in the closed beta with the addition of an all new story mission.

If you weren’t around last month, that means you can expect two different story missions, multiple side ops, multiple encounters, a look at the Base of Operations, and some Dark Zone content in the open beta. Character progression was tightly capped but there were still a number of options for customization. Participants will also get an in-game reward that will unlock for players when the game officially launches.

Massive says the upcoming open beta “will test the game systems further, and provide player feedback that will benefit the game experience at launch.” In other words, it sounds like the studio is doing what they can to ensure a smooth launch on March 8.

Battlefield 4 – High Tickrate Servers Coming To Xbox One & PlayStation 4 This Week

After months and months of testing in Battlefield 4’s Community Test Environment, developer DICE LA is finally making their move to improve the game’s network settings on other platforms.

Recent updates brought an increase in tickrate to Battlefield 4 on PC, but this week, the studio is finally making similar changes to the multiplayer servers on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Producer on Battlefield 4, David Sirland, explained the situation on the Battlelog Forums.

“Today we are happy to announce that we are increasing the default simulation (tickrate) of our 32 player servers for Battlefield 4!

“This means ALL PlayStation 4 & Xbox One small servers (32 players and smaller) will now run at 45hz compared to the previous default rate of 30hz.

“This increase improves ALL networking delays of the game by ~11ms per action – a massive impact on the second-to-second gameplay.”

Diving into the specifics, Sirland highlighted some of the factors that the studio had to consider when picking out a new default tickrate. Among these were client bandwidth increase, server bandwidth increase, server/hardware load increase, and the number of players on the server & compound impact.

The groundwork was laid in Battlefield 4’s Holiday Update, which “included several features to improve upon these factors, both on the server load and bandwidth usage side,” Sirland says. “This enabled us to run several tests in which we filled up servers running various tickrates (45hz, 50hz, 55hz).”

Following these tests, developers at DICE LA opted to go with the “more cautious choice” of 45hz at 32 players. “Even though higher rates works pretty well for most players, we need to make sure this change affects all players in a positive way,” Sirland mentioned.

64-player severs won’t get the same benefit, as the studio “did see issues for both players, and sometimes the server in certain circumstances” during testing, “even at small tickrate increases.” According to Sirland, developers “did not feel confident that 64 players will work flawlessly on all maps for ALL players” if the tickrate was increased in 64-player game modes.

The update will roll out later this week, but not for everybody all at once. Here’s the exact schedule DICE LA has lined up:

February 9th

“45hz default tickrate will be enabled on all 32 player (and smaller) servers in the North American East coast server pool (PS4 and Xbox One). This rollout will start at 10AM CET.”

February 9th-February 10th

“Confirmation testing period, ensuring the change works as intended.”

February 11th –

“Full roll out globally (if successfull) – timings to be decided.”

The studio mentions changes will have to be reverted if “any unforeseen issues are introduced” during the testing period or immediately after release, though they “do not believe this would be a likely outcome…”

Too bad 64-player servers won’t get the same improvements, but it’ll still be neat to try out the new settings some of Battlefield 4’s smaller game modes.
