343 Lists Off Huge Improvements Coming To Halo 5: Guardians’ New Forge Mode

Halo 5: Guardians‘ new and improved Forge mode is shaping up to be a huge step forward from previous iterations. Today, the team at 343 Industries dove deep into a ton of the brand new features that will arrive in December, after the game’s official launch at the end of this month.

Once Forge arrives, the studio says that they’ll be running it “as an ongoing (free) service for Halo 5, taking feedback from the community and delivering new features and content on an ongoing basis.”

Courtesy of Design Lead Tom French in the most recent Halo Waypoint update, below is a massive list of improvements and features coming to Forge in Halo 5: Guardians. Be sure to also check out the short teaser video above as well.

Halo 5: Guardians launches on October 27.

CONTROLLER BASED EDITING 2.0

Halo 5

  • Improved Control Scheme“Revised controls keeps users hands in the default “home” position so there’s less reaching for buttons which speeds up the building process. Don’t worry long-time Forgers, it took the Forgers we brought in a little bit to get used to but even the most hesitant were soon up and building maps at full speed.”
  • Multi-Select/Edit“Users can select and manipulate up to 64 individual objects at one time (more if combined with Groups); movement, rotation, property editing, everything you’re able to do to a single object.”
  • Free Camera “The camera no longer snaps to objects being edited. Users can freely position the camera to find the best vantage point to edit from. To orbit around selected objects like past Forges, simply click the right-stick to “lock on” to the objects and click again to cycle between multiple zoom levels.”
  • Contextual Control Helper “This lets the user see, in real time, what each controller input does. Users can change from “basic” settings to learn the ropes, ‘advanced’ for the power user controls, or turn the helper off once everything becomes second nature.”
  • Grid/Rotation Snaps – “Switch between multiple grid/rotation snap settings quickly to help align objects perfectly with each other. The bulk of the Forge specific assets are built to a grid so they interact perfectly with each other, making building even easier. There’s even a very small grid snap that can be used to fix z-fighting without making ‘bumps’ or very precise grid editing.”
  • Precision Editing – “Precision editing returns to enable fine tuning of object placement. On top of that, there’s a power user trick we call “double analog” precision that allows for even finer manipulation.”
  • Smart Magnets“Magnets no longer snap objects while moving them around. Instead they draw connection lines between magnets that will snap when the input is released. Additionally the camera can be aimed at magnets to influence which ones will snap giving extra precision when building with magnets.”

GROUPS

  • Grouping“Groups can be created dynamically with a single button press. Select more objects and press the button again to add to the group or press the button again to split the group up. It’s really that simple.”
  • Welding “Grouped objects can optionally be welded to their ‘parent’ object. This allows them to all physically move around together; make a soccer ball with traffic cone spikes that rolls around, or attach a weapon pad to a larger animating object. Our producer Mike loves to remind Ben that this feature is so important to make some of our Arena map designs work that it is LITERALLY the reason he was brought aboard. Good thing it happened because Forge is better because of the addition of both!”

OBJECT PALETTES

Halo 5

  • 1600+ Objects“Take that in for a minute. Previous iterations of Forge had a couple hundred. Shaun, Randal, and Ryan on our art content team have been crazy busy building LOTS of pieces from primitive shapes, structure parts, accent pieces, detail props, and gameplay objects custom built for Forge. Mix them in with things like the weapons, turrets, and power-ups makes this Forge have pretty much the ultimate building block set you wished you had when you were eight years old. I’ve been working with our art lead Wade to try and squeeze in a few last assets before we’re done; that said we’re in pretty great shape.”
  • New Object Types “We’ve added lots of new types of object types to Forge this time; FX emitters, decals, invisible blockers (big community request), chroma screens for machinima makers, objects for building map intros/outros, and yes, even a large adorable whale toy that we love dearly.”
  • Projected Terrain Pieces “Our new terrain pieces sample textures from their position on one of our Forge maps which makes them blend in almost seamlessly with the prebuilt terrain of the level when you mix them together. Watching them move around the map for the first time generally breaks people’s brains for a few minutes because it looks like voodoo. I don’t think it’s actually voodoo but instead it’s a lot of complex graphics code which might as well be.”
  • Unconstrained Objects“We’ve maintained keeping all of the objects in Forge ‘map autonomous’ meaning any object can be placed on any map thanks to our engines new asset management systems. Now users can experiment and try pretty much any idea on any map. For example if you wanted to you could place a Scorpion tank in the middle of Truth. This doesn’t mean you should, but you could.”
  • Object Enhancements “Lots of the returning objects have new features and improvements: Dial in the amount of extra clips with weapons. Man-Cannons and Grav Lifts launch distances and heights can be tuned in their properties and show the path where the players will go when used. Teleporters output directions can now be changed it displays which way players come out facing. We have commitment to improving everything Forge, not just the new.”

TRUE BUDGET

budget-banner-09c03223d74643c781583ba128bd2710

  • Multi-Budget System“Multiple budgets based on real engine systems; max object counts, memory, etc. This means when placing something like a large terrain piece, its large texture will only eat into the memory budget once, and additional same/similar pieces will only use up the object count budget because their shared texture is already loaded.”
  • Higher Object Count “We’ve increased the number of objects that can be placed in a Forge map to 1024. Higher object count allows for bigger maps with more detail than possible before.”
  • Soft Budgets“Some budgets are ‘soft’ meaning they can be exceeded but will cause visual artifacts/anomalies. This lets you keep building around these budgets to find the fun, then come back later to fine tune things and make the map look prettier.”

LIGHTING

colors-banner-2c1371c3fa3845d6890ba9e87066dc37

  • Light Objects – “Place real light objects in the world to light up interior spaces or just enhance a location on a map. Light objects have a whole slew of properties; point and spot types, light color/distance/falloff, light cone shape/size, lens flairs, and ‘gobos’ (the pattern projected from the light); customize pretty much every facet of the light imaginable.”
  • Light Fixtures – “Additional light fixture objects such as light posts, beacon lights, etc. that come with lights built into them making it possible to set dress and light a space at the same time.”
  • Opt-in Light Bake“We no longer automatically generate the lighting every time the Spartan is dropped in to test gameplay. Tap the button to quick drop the Spartan or hold it down to render the lights before.”
  • Shadow Clamp “Change the clamp to prevent shadowed spots from getting too dark. Another great use for this is when building, it can be cranked up to help keep everything easier to see before doing a lighting pass.”

FORGE CANVASES

In addition to being able to Forge on any Arena or Breakout map, players can also choose from three much larger canvases. All three locations have three different lighting setting that change the mood of the map, as well as the background skybox.

  • Alpine“A beautiful terrain with rolling hills sandwiched between a cliff side wall and lake front to rip a Warthog down. It has that classic Halo world look that feels like a chunk of the Pacific Northwest was transposed somewhere on a distant planet. We even left some space out in the water for building over which is fun. If you played our Halo 5 MP Beta, you would likely recognize this map from both Orion and Pegasus because they were built on top of it in different locations.”
  • Glacier“A large snow and ice covered landscape with giant ravine cut down the middle. It’s pretty breathtaking to look at! So much that while it was up on someone’s screen today and Sparth randomly walked by it stopped him dead in his tracks so he could backup and say, ‘Wow! That looks amazing!’ We agree.”
  • Space (Name TBD)“Space has no terrain because, well, it’s space. It’s a big empty map with nothing nailed down but the boundary markers at the edges of the map which go away at game time. It’s pretty much as blank of a map as possible so the sky (or space) is really the limit.”

COLORS

Halo 5

  • Primary, Secondary, & Tertiary Colors“The vast majority of the Forge building pieces have tunable primary, secondary, and tertiary color change sections on them. This allows objects color variations from the blatantly oblivious to very subtle. Many also support changing the matte/metallic reflective properties of the color surface as well allowing for more visual variety from location to location.”
  • 100+ Colors“We have more colors in Forge this time than most people had in their crayon boxes growing up; representing a wide range of shades and hues from across the whole color spectrum.”
  • Reference Colors“Objects placed in the level generally pre-assigned come with colors that point to ‘reference colors’ that are tunable in the options. Changing these colors in the map settings will immediately update the colors on all of the objects referencing them. It’s a great way to experiment with map coloring quickly and easily without having to edit a bunch of individual objects.”

OTHER

  • Scripting Redux“Almost every object in the new Forge can be scripted to move around, change colors, send event messages to other objects, spawn itself, and all kinds of other fun things. Objects can have up to four scripts that with a condition that will trigger an action when the event conditions are met. We even include a ‘logic switch’ condition type that can wait for multiple conditions to be met before the action is triggered. It’s all super powerful and we can’t wait to see the crazy ways it gets used by the community.”
  • Redesigned Menus & HUD“The property menus have been reorganized around objects, map, and tool settings to keep related options and actions in intuitive places. Menus have controller shortcuts to help quickly jump through them. Objects are organized into the palettes in multiple places to help sift through the giant list of objects to find the right set of things to place. HUD content has been refocused around the new features to make sure it’s easy to know how many objects are selected, current grid settings, etc.”
  • Advanced Object Translation/Rotation Tools “Move and rotate objects based on world axis or based on own orientations, reset objects rotation with a button press, and more. There’s pretty much an option to manipulate objects even in the strangest/special case situations.”
  • Show All Boundaries “Turn this on when building perimeter kill volumes to help see all of them at once so it’s easy see how they all overlap and interact with one another.”

Destiny – Bungie Announces Paid Micro-DLC, Will Support Future Content Updates [Updated]

Soon, Destiny players will be re-introduced to a returning vendor in The Tower by the name of Tess Everis who’s new inventory focuses solely on the game’s more expressive goods.

Tess will return to The Tower next Tuesday, October 13, with a set of brand new new emotes, 18 initially, much like the ones that were included in the Legendary Edition of Destiny: The Taken King last month. Accepted currency is “Silver,” which, as you might have guessed, must be purchased through the Xbox Live Marketplace or the PlayStation Network with real life money.

In a news update on Bungie.net, the studio was quick to point out that “these emotes are completely optional, and won’t impact the action game in any way.”

“If you’re not interested in what Tess has to offer, you won’t ever be forced to pluck an item off of her shelf. You’ll still receive updates to the game, and you won’t lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn’t have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped.”

In the spirit of transparency, Bungie also took a moment to explain where the funds used to purchase Silver will go.

“Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year,” Community Manager “DeeJ” rote. “It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.”

UPDATE: According to sources who came to Kotaku, Destiny’s future DLC plan entails free content updates, including additional quest lines and missions, trickled throughout the months leading up to Fall 2016 when Destiny 2 is expected to ship. That means no more paid expansions like The Dark Below, House of Wolves, or The Taken King until then.

With Tess’ arrival in The Tower next Tuesday, Bungie says it will gift all Guardians with enough free Silver to “buy an emote or two.”

Remember, Tess isn’t the only NPC making a return to Destiny Year Two next week. Lord Saladin and his Iron Banner will also make a comeback with new gear and a few new tweaks to the event itself. Here’s the full rundown.

To us, the trade of real life money for Silver and Emotes sounds like a fairly harmless addition to the game’s economy and is largely ignorable if a player so chooses. What’s your take on it? Tell us in the comments below.

Xbox One Video Shows You How To Customize The New Remappable Elite Controller

Xbox reveals how to customize the remappable Elite Wireless Controller coming to Xbox One later this month.

As demonstrated in the new video above, every button is customizable through the official Elite Controller App while much of the hardware is interchangeable. Up to 255 different configurations can be saved within the app while two can be uploaded and saved to the Elite Controller at a time, allowing players to swap at the flick of a switch. In addition, the app will provide the ability to tune the sensitivity of the controller’s thumbsticks, rumble motors, and triggers.

The ERP of $149.99 USD sure is asking a lot, but to many, the level of customization the controller provides is worth the price. What’s your take on Xbox One’s new Elite Controller? Are you interested enough to pick one up later this month?

New Black Ops 3 Behind-The-Scenes Video Promises A “Deeper & Richer” Campaign Than Ever Before

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s co-op campaign, which only ships with current-gen versions of the game on November 6, is “deeper and richer” than ever before, says Treyarch.

According to the studio, fans who want to dive into the game’s more fleshed-out backstory and lore will be able to do so through specifically-built features in the story campaign. There’ll be a codex of sorts that documents the events leading up to the game’s dark and gritty 2065 setting as well as other story elements that are meant to mess with the player’s head. Black Ops 3’s new campaign trailer alluded to this last week, which you can watch here if you missed it.

Today, the studio released a new behind-the-scenes video that talks about some of the co-op campaign’s new features and highlights a few of the new design elements behind Black Ops 3’s story and setting. Check it out above.

New Versions Of Destiny’s Iron Banner & Trials of Osiris PvP Events Will Return Mid-October

Later this month, the doors to great rewards and fierce competition will reopen to Guardians once again as both the Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris return to Destiny, this time with a Year Two spin.

As before, what separates these monthly and weekly events from your every-day PvP activities is the importance placed on your Guardian’s gear and Light Level rating. The more Attack, the more Defense, and the more Light you can muster, the better your chances are at success.

In the Year Two version of Iron Banner, returning on October 13, Bungie is readjusting the damage curves to work with the new measurement systems. In the studio’s latest Weekly Update, Crucible Designer Jeremiah Pieschl highlighted what’s new:

Iron Banner – October 13

  • The tempered buff is now automatically applied and continues to grow in effectiveness each day of the event.
  • The alt catch-up buff and Iron Medallion mechanics are unchanged.
  • Potential match completion rewards now include both weapons and armor, matching the same items available from Lord Saladin during each event.
  • Drop rates have been increased and are intended to be the primary source of rewards from Iron Banner. If you don’t get what you’re hoping for, you have the option to visit Lord Saladin instead.
  • Gear purchased from Lord Saladin now requires Legendary Marks instead of Glimmer.
  • New emblems have been added to his inventory.
  • All new bounties including 9 Daily bounties (3 per day) and 3 new Weekly bounties which reward Legendary Marks.
  • Recommended minimum Light for Iron Banner: 230.
  • Only Level 40 Guardians can lead a Fireteam.

On October 16, the Trials of Osiris will once again pit fireteams of three against each other in gruelling Elimination matches. Getting to the Lighthouse will be a slightly different journey this time around. Senior Designer Derek Carroll has the explanation:

Trials of Osiris – October 16

  • Trials gear will now drop exclusively as end-of-match rewards for winning teams.
    • The more you win, the better those drops will be!
    • There’s no need to return to Brother Vance, all rewards come directly to you.
  • Passage Coins still drop for the losing team. Trials is still about winning, but Coins can help make that easier.
  • Trials Passages now have a Details page containing your active buffs. You won’t be able to add buffs once you’ve started your Trial, so make sure you buy them first!
  • Players that go undefeated on their Passage will continue to be invited to The Lighthouse.
  • Players may continue to play in the Trials past 9 wins (but they won’t get any better gear).
  • Brother Vance now has Trials Bounties available each weekend to provide players with a way to get sweet Trials gear, even if they’re not reaching the Lighthouse.
  • Regular Crucible Bounties are also still valid in Trials.
  • We will attempt to match up teams with similar win counts.
    • If you have 1 win, we will try to match you with another team with only 1 win.
    • If you have 8 wins… yup.
  • If we can’t find a high-quality match, we will loosen the win requirements first (in other words, we will not prioritize “wins” over low-latency matches).
  • Overtime timer in Elimination will now show 0:00 instead of stopping at 0:01 when time expires.
  • Teammate and enemy Revives now have distinct audio cues.
  • Recommended minimum Light for Trials of Osiris: 290.
  • Only Guardians with at least 251 Light can lead a Fireteam.

Excited to get back in the Crucible with Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris?

According to Bungie Community Manager DeeJ, the studio will also “have some revelations about what else Year Two will hold for you” later this month. Keep your sights on MP1st for updates!

Battlefield 4 Gets More Free DLC, ‘Community Operations’ Arrives This Fall

DICE LA and EA are marking Fall 2015 as the official launch window for Battlefield 4‘s player-inspired Community Operations DLC.

The free pack, forged through Battlefield 4’s Community Map Project, will launch separately from the game’s upcoming Fall Update and will include the new jungle map, Operation Outbreak. Plans for the community-driven map project began all the way back in February, eventually moving into testing via Battlefield 4’s Community Test Environment where players quickly agreed on a jungle setting.

“Early this year, we revealed the Community Map Project, an initiative where we built a Battlefield 4 map alongside the community, from concept to release,” DICE LA wrote in a blog update earlier today. “We’ve shared updates throughout the process, taken your feedback, tallied up your votes, and worked with you to make the map that you wanted us to make. And today, we’re happy to formally reveal Battlefield 4 Community Operations, a free DLC pack coming for all Battlefield 4 players in Fall 2015.”

Above are some video highlights of various playtest sessions showing off each of the map’s key objective areas, including a medical research facility, an ancient temple, and a lush waterfall.

Still on the horizon is Battlefield 4’s Classic Map Project, which we haven’t heard much about since its first appearance in the CTE last June. Early last month, DICE LA released Night Operations, another player-driven project that, hopefully, fulfilled the community’s wish for a proper night map.

Keep your eyes on MP1st for more updates on Battlefield 4’s Community Operations in the coming weeks.

Rainbow Six Siege Closed Beta Gets Extended Through The Weekend

The Rainbow Six Siege Closed Beta, which was originally supposed to wrap up on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC tomorrow, is getting extended through the weekend, now closing on October 4.

Ubisoft has also announced that a Double Renown event will start this Friday at 5PM PST / 8PM EST, so players will be able to unlock more Operators, attachments, and skins even quicker.

In addition, emails are now being sent to all American and European players who’ve played at least one match in the Closed Beta before 11AM PST / 2PM PST on September 29 containing additional download codes to give to friends. According to Ubisoft, these keys will be tied to the same platform of the user who received them and will be redeemable until October 2.

Sounds like the Seige-ing ain’t over just yet. Who’s playing this weekend? What are your first impressions of the Closed Beta so far?

Rainbow Six Siege hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on December 1.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Multiplayer Review

For me, booting up Gears of War: Ultimate Edition multiplayer on Xbox One was an unpredictably refreshing experience, despite the age of the original game this current-gen remake by Vancouver-based studio The Coalition is based on.

The care and quality that went into the actual remaking of the original might be at the root of it, but so is my unfamiliarity with the series. Prior to August 25, 2015, I could count the amount of multiplayer hours logged into Gears of War on Xbox 360 on two fingers. Its cartoonish violence just didn’t appeal to me at the time, nor has it ever, but there was no running from the fact that Gears was a big deal for third-person multiplayer shooters on console in the late 2000’s.

Not knowing exactly what to expect, however, is precisely what made my first real visit to the party such an enjoyable one.

Gears Ultimate

Gears multiplayer is different from any other modern shooter in that it more closely resembles a match of Chess. Pawns move linearly on a map without the ability to jump or easily climb to elevated areas, so careful movement from cover to cover is key. Controlling weapon spawns and objectives through close-knit attack or defense formations and precise teamwork is the name of the game in most modes. And with a limited number of respawn tickets per each four-player team, every life counts. It makes for a more demanding experience than most folks might be used to, but the feeling of accomplishment (and defeat) is all the greater for it.

Like any good old-school shooter, customization is kept to a minimum with character and weapon skins being the only options available during the pregame lobby. The two weapons in your default arsenal will mostly determine your play style until a power weapon is secured. You’ll either whither your opponents’ health down at range with the Lancer assault rifle or get in close and personal for the risky Gnasher shotgun kill. Mix and matching roles within a team and playing to your strengths can make for some pretty fearsome gameplay strategies.

Gears Ultimate

Gears of War’s heads up display is kept relatively clean with no minimap or player markers, so learning map layouts and keeping aware of your team’s position will likely become a major focus during your first few hours of play. That does, of course, entirely depend on your history with the game and whether or not you’ve already memorized every nook and cranny. Luckily, teammate positions and power weapon spawn locations can be brought up with a simple press of the Tac-Com button, a new feature that fresh players will definitely want to make use of.

But, what else is new?

While the flow of each match stays pretty true to the original, a few newer mechanics that were introduced in more recent Gears games have been implemented in the Ultimate Edition. The option to quickly blind-throw grenades is in, as is the ability to spot enemies for your team by pressing in the left thumbstick. Both fit naturally into the remastered gameplay without breaking the experience. A few new modes, like Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and 2v2 Gnasher Execution have also been inserted into the standard list of classic Gears game types, including Execution and Warzone.

Gears Ultimate

In addition to the full assortment of original Gears maps, all DLC and PC-exclusive maps have been thrown into the mix as well, bringing the total number of maps up to 19. Multiplayer unlock progression has also been extended with 17 character skins from Gears of War 3 while working through the game’s single player or co-op campaign will gradually unlock new pieces of concept art and comic strips. Speaking of campaign, all content from the PC port of the original has also been included in the Ultimate Edition.

Custom match settings have been updated to include new options to enable or disable Active Reloads, tweak the Respawn Time, turn Self-revive on or off, and alter Weapon Respawn timers. The new Tournament control scheme moves the cover, evade, and mantle function up to the left bumper, which makes life a lot easier for your right thumb, which can now stay focused on aiming.

I can’t particularly recall what the online experience was like during Gears of War’s Xbox 360 days, but it’s safe to assume that the dedicated Xbox One servers powering the Ultimate Edition’s online services are miles better.

Gears Ultimate

Due to the cleaner 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second visual upgrade, the Ultimate Edition might not come across as dark and gritty as the original. Take a look at some of the new character models in the campaign, for example, and you’ll spot a few more ‘prettier’ faces than usual, which doesn’t seem to match up with the vision of the first game. It’s a fair tradeoff, however, as expressions and animations come across more clearly, and the new lighting and special effects look wonderful. The remastered Dolby 7.1 Surround soundscape also lives up to modern audio standards and adds to the immersion immensely.

When you see it, you’ll find it pretty clear that the Ultimate Edition is a proper remake and not just a simple up-res. The Coalition has done a thorough job and what I’ve witnessed so far has me excited to see what the studio will be able to pull of with Gears of War 4 on Xbox One Holiday 2016.

Gears Ultimate

We’ve opted to leave this review scoreless as the Ultimate Edition is a faithful remake of a classic Xbox 360 title that accomplishes what it set out to do. We think it’s pretty clear that it’s an obvious pick-up for fans of the series and a great place for curious newcomers to soak in what Gears is all about before the next proper sequel.

On the flip side, if you were turned off by the original, the Ultimate Edition won’t do a whole lot to change your mind. It’s still the Gears game you know and love, or hate — nothing groundbreaking about it. Though, for only two thirds the retail price of a standard Xbox One game, the risk involved in giving The Coalition’s debut project a chance isn’t all that severe. Like me, you might be happy you did.

Long-time fans of the series, what’s your take on Gears of War: Ultimate Edition so far? Is it everything you remembered and more? If you’re completely new to the experience, how was your first ride? Was it enough to elicit some excitement for the upcoming sequel? Tell us in the comments.

This review was based on a retail code of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox One, provided my Microsoft.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Campaign Trailer Is Filled With Super Secret Stuff, Watch It Here

Treyarch and Activision are giving fans a bigger and better taste of what Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s campaign mode, set in the year 2065, has in store for its release later this fall.

Clearly, some highly secretive stuff is going on in the new footage that the studio released today (above). There are even a few flashbacks to what appears to be the World War II era, which is pretty typical of these Black Ops games so far. We’re not sure, however, how this story might tie in to the other games, if at all.

Given the history of Treyarch’s previous titles that have toyed with ideas like mind manipulation and brainwashing, I have the feeling Black Ops 3 is going to be filled with plenty of twists and other crazy plot points. The trailer above alludes to it when the main protagonist says, “I can feel it taking over. Not even my mind is safe.”

Also, is that Reznov?

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 12.02.32 PM

The timeline wouldn’t really make sense, but the silhouette totally of matches up with the way he was depicted in Black Ops 1. I could be way off. Either way, the trailer certainly has me wanting to come along for the ride.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 comes out November 6 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. However, due to the inability to ‘faithfully recreate’ Black Ops 3’s co-op campaign on older-generation hardware, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will only ship with multiplayer and zombies modes.

What’d you think of the story trailer?

Product Review – The SCUF 4PS PlayStation 4 Controller

With PlayStation becoming the new home of Call of Duty eSports and Sony securing early Call of Duty DLC launches starting with Black Ops 3, the temptation for fans of the series on Xbox to jump ship is at an all time high.

Falling into this category myself, and as a long-time user of third-party Xbox controllers like the SCUF Hybrid and SCUF One, it was time to consider new input options for the PlayStation 4. Like the Xbox One game pad, Sony’s DualShock 4 checks-off a number of improvements over the previous generation’s offering, but also lacks essential options that many modern FPS console gamers might consider a requirement today. Clumsy thumbsticks, a lack of good grip, and the awkward juggling between thumbsticks and face buttons are hurdles competitive gamers must jump and that companies like SCUF Gaming try to overcome.

In light of this, SCUF recently sent over a SCUF 4PS White PlayStation 4 controller for us to take a look at and determine whether or not their solution to these ‘gamer problems’ are up to snuff. With enhanced movement in shooters becoming the norm and games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 on the horizon, the timing couldn’t be any better.

CPSpEAnVAAAi5C_

Of course, the benefits of a customized DualShock 4 controller will reach beyond the realm of Call of Duty and potentially pique the interest of anyone looking for a more comfortable and option-rich input device. So what exactly does the 4PS offer and is it worth the premium price tag?

Perhaps its most alluring and ‘game-changing’ feature is what many gamers come to SCUF for in the first place: rear-saddled button paddles that give the user an alternative way to input frequently-used commands without the need to press any face buttons. FPS gamers know the frustration of having to give up the ability to aim with a thumbstick in order to reload a weapon, jump over an obstacle, or quickly dash around a corner in-game without having to resort to uncomfortable grip positions like ‘the claw.’

The 4PS Pro Paddles are wide enough to accommodate most finger lengths and are placed far enough into the center of the controller to avoid any accidental presses. The slight curve at the tip also provides a good enough grip to prevent any slippage. They might take some time to get used to if you’re coming from a standard controller, but once it’s ‘under the fingers,’ there’s no going back.

On a standard 4PS, paddles come mapped to the X and O buttons, but that option can be customized in the online order process. Those who value versatility might also want to consider the Electro Magnetic Remapping option to switch paddle functions on the fly.

SCUF-4PS-Pro-Paddle-controller-close-up

If finger gymnastics aren’t your thing, the SCUF Pro Paddles are an invaluable tool in any pro gamer’s arsenal. In addition to the comfort of rear inputs, a major benefit many high-level gamers look for in a competitive controller is the level of grip it provides, both in the hands and under the thumbs.

The 4PS’ Pro Grip doesn’t cover as much surface area of the controller’s backside as it does on the SCUF One, but its placement precisely where the bottom knuckles of the middle, ring, and pinky fingers grip the handles is more than enough to do the job. I found it especially helpful a few hours into an intense gaming session when the perspiration begins. Like the Pro Paddles, the Pro Grip ships with every SCUF 4PS and can also be customized.

It’s about that time, when the fingers become moist and your thumbs begin to lose grip, that the standard DualShock 4 thumbsticks can be quite difficult to keep in control. Thumbstick customization on the SCUF 4PS reaches far and wide with multiple length and style options. But, more importantly, they’ll obey your movements with more precision thanks to their grippy texture, even under sweaty thumbs. My particular model shipped with medium-length concave sticks, which my thumbs fit into very nicely.

Style and length will depend on preference, though it’s generally understood that a longer aiming stick will yield more accurate results in-game by giving the user more room to make more precise movements. If your thumbs can make the reach, the 4PS’ longest domed stick measures in at over 20mm.

My only wish is that the 4PS allowed users to easily swap thumbsticks in and out they way SCUF’s Infinity1 does to allow for more experimentation without having to replace an entire controller. Perhaps in a future iteration or two, that will be the case. Regardless, SCUF’s sticks are a clear winner over the DualShock 4’s slippery pads any day.

04_thumbsticks31

As someone who’s primarily enjoyed FPS games on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, I can really appreciate the optional SCUF Fangs that attach to and elongate the DualShock 4’s L2 and R2 triggers. Naturally, my fingers would rest a little further down the regular triggers, near the tip, which meant I would occasionally slip off with the right amount of force. I found the Fangs allowed my trigger fingers to act on their tendency to drift downward without having to make any re-adjustments. On top of that, the additional grip also led to a reduction in slippage overall. They’re not vital to performance if you’re already used to the DualShock 4’s L2 and R2 set-up, but you may want to consider them if you also find the standard triggers a tad too short.

For Fighting and Sports Games enthusiasts, the the removable SCUF Control Disc is another option that sits on top of the DualShock 4’s d-pad and helps smooth out directional inputs, though we have yet to test this specific feature for ourselves.

SCUF’s controllers can also be ordered with a SCUF Protection Case that fits both the controller and a standard charging cable. It’s included in the SCUF Player Pack which also includes a 10ft. Braided Charging Cable, a bottle of GamerGrip Gaming Edition, and a SCUF Key Chain.

CFTLXmCUkAAKqqt

In our experience, while the SCUF 4PS is a premium product with a premium price tag (starting at $119.95 USD), it works exactly as advertised and you get what you pay for. Imagining for a moment that your skill as an FPS player remains constant, your kill-to-death ratio will improve by taking advantage of its tools. Elongated thumbsticks with better grip enable a higher level of precision, assigning commonly used face buttons to paddles means moving and aiming are no longer mutually exclusive, and a more comfortable and sturdy grasp on your controller and triggers means more efficient input with less room for error.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to value these options and decide if your in-game performance is worth investing into. If you’re enthusiastic about competitive gaming on PlayStation and dedicate a portion of your disposable income to your hobby, the SCUF 4PS is a no-brainer. At the very least, it’s nice to have quality options like SCUF in the relatively narrow console peripheral market, compared to the ocean of customizable mouse and keyboard products PC players have at their fingertips.

In any case, if your sights and wallet are set on a high-quality, option-rich, and highly customizable input device for the PlayStation 4 that will have a positive effect on your performance and comfort, we strongly recommend the SCUF 4PS.

This product review was based on the SCUF 4PS White for the Sony PlayStation 4, provided by SCUF Gaming. Visit their website at scufgaming.com.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Campaign Gets The Cut On Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3

As a reader of MP1st, chances are you won’t be too bothered by the news that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will be a multiplayer-only title when it launches this November 6.

For a lowered retail price of $49.99 USD, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users will get access to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 multiplayer, but without features like the Weapon Paint Shop and other eSports tools. The Shadows of Evil Zombies mode is still in, but according to Activision, the scope and scale of Black Ops 3’s co-operative campaign could not be “faithfully recreated” on old-gen consoles.

A statement from the company reads:

“The Black Ops 3 PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will feature Multiplayer and Zombies gameplay only, not Campaign. The ambitious scope of the 1-4 player coop Campaign design of the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware.”

Similar to last year’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3’s development on old-gen consoles is being handled by separate studios. In this case, Beenox and Mercenary Technology are tasked with bringing “as much of the Black Ops 3 gameplay as possible to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360,” but it looks like the campaign didn’t make the cut.

Our bet is that a number of you weren’t going to touch the story mode anyways and would rather take the $10 discount, but we could be wrong. Sound off in the comments! Is Call of Duty better off without a campaign?

Activision Announces $3 Million ‘Call of Duty World League’ With Pro and Challenge Divisions

Activision aims to take Call of Duty eSports to the next level with the announcement of a new league, featuring multiple divisions, that will up the total potential prize winnings to $3 million USD and include a wider, larger audience.

“The Call of Duty World League will feature multiple divisions—a Pro Division and a Challenge Division,” wrote Activision’s Scott Lowe in an introductory blog post. “The Pro Division will feature competitions in North America, Europe, and Australia—which kick off in January of 2016. Regional competitions will feature its own regional LAN championship, which fans can watch in-person or online.”

As expected, the events will lead up to the annual Call of Duty Championship, which, this year, will feature Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and will also take place during a different season.

“The results of each regional Pro competition will determine which teams advance to the Call of Duty Championship, which is moving from its prior spring time slot to fall 2016 to accommodate the new league structure,” explains Lowe. “The Challenge Division will give amateur teams a chance to compete through a series of official LAN events and secure a place at the Call of Duty Championship.”

Eventually, the franchise-wise league will grow to accommodate both Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games’ future Call of Duty titles.

Here’s another breakdown from the official Call of Duty eSports Twitter:

Good morning, @eSportsCOD community. We’d like to take a minute to talk about the future of Call of Duty and eSports. Cool? Cool.

We’ve watched the community explode over the past 3 years. @rcodcompetitive has become a force with @CoD_Stats, @CoDEsportspedia, and more.

Team fandom is at an all-time high. #Wolfpack #GreenWall #FaZeUp #BoysinBlue #tKAllDay

It’s led us to where we are today. And now @Activision, @Treyarch, and the rest of the @CallofDuty family are taking this to the next level.

Introducing the #CODWorldLeague, our brand new structure for eSports in 2016 and beyond.

CPr80vOUkAEbHJi

The new #CODWorldLeague Pro Division is one path that leads straight to the @CallofDuty Championship.

CPr80xeUYAAoebN

Each #CODWorldLeague territory will have its own independent structure. The goal is an even greater worldwide #CODChamps event.

The #CODWorldLeague allows us to increase the prize pools.

Three million dollars across series payouts, LAN events, and #CODChamps.

With the new #CODWorldLeague structure, we’re moving the timing of #CODChamps from Spring to Fall. Champs will be the grand finale of 2016.

The additional time allotted by the movement of #CODChamps will allow players to hone their skills for #CODWorldLeague’s biggest tournament.

Because we want the very best @CallofDuty talent at #CODChamps, we’ve built a program to empower amateurs to earn their chance to compete.

Introducing the #CODWorldLeague Challenge Division, a new pathway for amateurs to qualify for #CODChamps.

While right now the pro division is held in three territories, the Challenge division is open worldwide. Bring it.

More details and specifics are to come, so keep your eyes right here on MP1st. For now, be sure to head on over to the official Call of Duty World League FAQ page to have your questions answered.
