New Unreal Tournament Team Deathmatch Gameplay Shows Off New Weapons and Levels

Unreal Tournament for PC, Mac, and Linux is shaping up beyond some of the level and character concept art fans were briefly treated to last week.

Epic Games has recently launched a brand new developer diary that shines some light on the work the studio has been up to with Unreal Tournament and the game’s Team Deathmatch mode.

According to senior designer Nick Donaldson, pretty much all of the weapons have been implemented thus far and the studio also has “a couple of really cool levels.” Gameplay programmer Joe Wilcox says that, right now, Epic is really focusing on zeroing in player movement.

You can watch some of the off-screen action in the video above. Check it out and tell us what you think about it so far. Are the memories coming back ?

Sony Says EA Access Doesn’t ‘Represent Good Value To The Playstation Gamer’

Yesterday, we reported that Microsoft had scored a deal with publisher Electronic Arts to bring Xbox Live members on Xbox One EA Access, an exclusive subscription service costing $5 a month or $30 a year that comes loaded with benefits like full game access and early game trials. Today, we learned that Sony, on the other hand, doesn’t think it holds good value for their customers.

In an E-mail sent to GameInformer, Sony says “We evaluated the EA Access subscription offering and decided that it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect, PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price. We don’t think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer.”

Our Take – It seems a bit parental of Sony to decide what’s good for its own customers. Gamers might not always make use of certain features at first, but if there ever comes the time, it’s always nice to have it available from the get-go.

Plans can always change down the road, but for now, PlayStation users will have to hang tight. Are you a PlayStation owner? Do you think you could have made use of EA’s new service?

EA Access is now in beta for Xbox One update preview members.

Destiny’s End-Game Raid Will ‘Demand of You Things You’ve Never Been Asked To Do In a Shooter Before’

Bungie means business when it comes to Destiny‘s end game activities.

According to Bungie’s Luke Smith, Destiny’s end game “begins as soon as you see the way the story ends.” Starting at around level 20, you’ll be sent back into the wild after Destiny’s main story line wraps up and presented with a couple of new options, including Raids and Nightfall activities.

Raids are “extremely crafted,” six-player challenges that are only open to attempt with friends, Smith told IGN. Bungie won’t support public matchmaking because an activity like the Vault of Glass is not something you’ll want to attempt with complete strangers and a lack of communication. You’ll need to get comfortable working with some of your most trustworthy allies for a couple hours in order to best what the Raid has to throw at you.

The activity is going to take you and your group of five buddies into a place that you’ve never been,” says Smith. “A place that you will return to frequently. And [it will] demand of you things you’ve never even really been asked to do in a shooter before.”

Raiding in a shooter is a bit of a new thing, so Bungie is keen on leveraging what the studio has learned from games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft while injecting challenges and activities better suited to an action game.

“One of the things we certainly haven’t talked about is that [raids aren’t] an activity that we expect you to get through the first time through,” Smith added.

“Unlike a bunch of the other activities in Destiny, where you begin the activity – like let’s say you pick the level-22 Strike playlist – everything in that activity is going to be level 22. It’s going to be consistent. If you’re level 26, you’re going to have some relationship to it. You’re going to be more powerful than that activity. In a raid, when the raid begins at level 25, it’s not where it ends. Like part of going the raid is the journey of gearing up; building your arsenal to react to the situations that it’s going to ask you to go through.”

Smith unveiled that, like Strikes, a Raid in Destiny will culminate in an epic boss battle, as is traditionally the case in classic MMO Raids.

“I think that we’ve given people a taste in Strikes of what the bosses are and what they can do,” he said. “The raid bosses are different: they’re still big monsters, much like what you’re going to see, they’re still scary, but they have a bunch of abilities that are unlike anything you’ve really experienced in a shooter before. And I don’t say that to be a douchebag and I don’t say it because it’s a cool bullet point, I say it because when we were building this thing there was nothing that any of us could go home to play to try and learn from. I mean we were – as we were going – building and learning and failing along the way to find cool mechanics and occasionally we’d succeed.”

If it’s not Raids that will keep out busy, Destiny will offer a number of noteworthy daily and weekly challenges.

“Nightfall activities come in two flavors: daily and weekly. They have extremely exotic rewards,” Smith Explained.

“We want to have activities that occupy the range of challenge for you. So if you’re a fresh level 20 you can play the Nightfall daily activity at level 22 and it’s going to be hard. It’s going to be challenging. But you can get through it, maybe. Maybe if you have some friends. The weekly Nightfall activity is something that pushes all the way out as far as the leveling allows you to go in Destiny. So it ends up occupying at the far end of the spectrum: this extremely high gameplay investment challenge. Like it’s both the toughest guys we can throw at you that’s going to require the best gear, and it’s going to have a bunch of modifiers on it that make it even harder.”

Long story short, it sounds like there’ll be plenty to keep you busy after hitting that level 20 milestone. Hopefully, you’ll have a handful of willing friends to take a long for the ride. If not, you’ve got a couple of hours to make some during your adventures.

Destiny launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on September 9.

Homefront: Revolution – Deep Silver Takes The Reigns From Crytek, Creates a New Studio To Develop It

Following Crytek’s recent financial woes, publisher Koch Media and developer Deep Silver, best known for the Dead Island and Metro series, has taken the reigns from the Crysis developer and has acquired the Homefront IP, which Crytek initially bought following THQ’s bankruptcy.

To make sure the game is at its best, Deep Silver has created an in-house development studio to head the project, called Dambuster Studios, which will be based in Nottingham, UK. A recent statement from Crytek indicates that the entire staff of Crytek UK will transfer over to Deep Silver to continue work on their recently announced shooter, Homefront: Revolution.

Work on Hunt: Horror’s of the Gilded Age will also be affected, according to the company, as development will transfer from Crytek’s Austin, Texas studio to its Frankfurt studio. In addition, Crytek’s US presence will shrink while locations in Shanghai and Seoul are now under review.

Our Take – It’s interesting to see the IP jump ships so many times and still be revived. But will Homefront: The Revolution be the same Crytek-developed game, just finished at Dambuster Studios? Or, will it become something entirely different?

What are your thoughts? Are you excited or fearful for the franchise? Let us know in the commment section below, and for more Homefront news, keep your sights zeroed in on MP1st.

Thanks, GameInformer

It turns out that a lot of people played the beta for Bungie’s upcoming epic shared-world shooter, Destiny.

Destiny launches on September 9.

No. There will not be another beta before then. Stay strong, Guardian. While you wait, we suggest reading up on all of the Destiny news that popped up over the last few weeks over on our dedicated page.

Community Spotlight – Game Tracker App Lets You Stay Updated With Your Favorite Games

Friend and Battlefield Podcast founder Jan Ole Peek (@ChalkOne) is putting the final touches on a brand new iOS app that helps you keep track of your favorite video games, including news, update, and information, all in the palm of your hand or in your pocket.

Game Tracker is an app that Peek has been hammering away at since the conclusion of E3 2014. He hopes to provide gaming enthusiasts a simple way to stay up-to-date with games they’re most interested in.

“During E3 this year so many games were shown and announced and I wanted a way to keep track of them, to sort them by release date, keep up on the latest news regarding them, and not have to do it by manually assembling a list somewhere on a piece of paper. The idea of creating an app that would allow me to search for games, add them to a list, and easily get news about them popped into my head and thus the motivation to create an iPhone app was born.”

We gave Game Tracker a spin and, thus far, it’s simple to use and is a really easy way to check up on the most recent news articles on games we personally selected to keep track of.

The app itself is nearly complete, fully-featured, running on a variety of iPhone versions, and functioning on iPad. Focus may extend to native iPad support down the road, along with support for Android devices and Windows Phone. But, for now, the next step is to get it submitted to the App Store and out into the hands of users. That’s where Kickstarter comes in and where Peek hopes to get the help to jump over the last few hurdles by getting an Apple Developer Account and access to actually place the app on the App Store.

“Backing this project gets you at minimum the app itself. I plan to price it at $2.99, so a $3 pledge ensures you’ll be among the first to be able to use it. If you’re interested in this idea and would purchase the app anyway, think of it as donating 1 cent.”

As of this writing, 11 backers have pledged $90 of the $150 required to kick start the project with exactly one week to go. So, if it sounds useful or interesting to you, drop by Peek’s Kickstarter page right here and check it out.

You can also have a look at a few screens of Game Tracker in action below:

EA Announces ‘EA Access,’ A New Subscription Service For Xbox One

UPDATE

COO Peter Moore has said that “I think one of the key things is that once a game goes into the Vault it stays there, it’s not going to be taken out, that’s a commitment we’ve made,”. With that said, the TOS still states that they reserve the right to take games out.

Original Story

Electronic Arts, publisher behind franchises like Battlefield, Madden, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and more, has announced a new subscription service exclusively for Microsoft’s Xbox One that allows subscribers to play games in their fullest for only $5 a month.

“The Vault” as EA calls it, is a collection of their latest titles that allow subscribers to download and play in their fullest and for an unlimited amount of time. The catch is, for those wondering, is that titles in the vault aren’t there forever, and some games might not even be included. With that said, EA has not come out and stated how long each title will be in the vault for.

Along with those features, subscribers will also receive a 10% discount on full game downloads and subscription services offered on the Microsoft store, and will be able to demo new games before they are released up to 5 days.

If this deal sounds good to you, go ahead and visit the Xbox Live Store to purchase a month pass for $5 or an annual pass for just $30. You’ll get access to 4 games for the beta, which are Battlefield 4, Peggle 2, FIFA 14, and Madden NFL 25.

Our Take – While it does seem like a pretty good deal, and I’m absolutely stunned at the value EA is giving gamers, I, and many others, expect the price to hike up soon. Regardless of where it might go, I hope the subscription fee will continue to feel like a steal for the service.

What are your thoughts? Are you happy with what the service provides, or do you feel that some trickery is afoot?

Battlefield 4 Premium and Select Digital Content Now 33% Off on Xbox One and Xbox 360

A handful of digital content for DICE’s military-inspired first-person shooter, Battlefield 4, is now 33% off on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Both Xbox One and Xbox 360 Live Gold members can take advantage of the deal that includes Battlefield 4 Premium, as well as separate expansion packs like China Rising, Second Assault, Naval Strike, and the Ultimate Shortcut Bundle. Remember, Battlefield 4 Premium includes all Battlefield 4 expansion packs to date, including the just released Dragon’s Teeth and yet-to-be-released Final Stand.

All of the discounts will be applied until August 4. The links below lead to the Xbox 360 Live Marketplace.

With some of the recently made (and incoming) improvements to Battlefield 4, and considering Battlefield Hardline’s delay to next year, investing in Premium right now might not be a bad idea, especially if you’re looking to extend your Battlefield 4 experience through the rest of this year and into the next.

If you prefer to pick and choose, Battlefield 4’s Naval Strike expansion offers some of the better Battlefield 4 maps we’ve thus far.

Thanks, Major Nelson

Advanced Warfare Multiplayer Teaser Analysis – Exo-Suit Abilities, Score Streaks, New Mini-Map, Field Orders, and More

It was brief, but the five second teaser at the end of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s recently outed campaign story trailer was more than enough to tell us a few key points about the game’s highly anticipated multiplayer.

Before we get to the details, here are some stills from the trailer:

Screen Shot 2014-07-29 at 10.45.06 AMScreen Shot 2014-07-29 at 10.45.30 AMScreen Shot 2014-07-29 at 10.45.55 AMScreen Shot 2014-07-29 at 10.47.20 AMScreen Shot 2014-07-29 at 10.48.07 AM

Analysis

Boost Jump – In the very first sequence of the multiplayer teaser at the end of Advanced Warfare’s story trailer, we catch a third-person perspective of a player out-maneuvering his opponent using his Exo-Suit’s Boost Jump ability.

Boost Dash – The second sequence in the trailer demonstrates the player’s ability to Boost Slide. Both the Boost Jump and Boost Slide are sure to mix things up when it comes to character movement in Call of Duty multiplayer.

Multiplayer Map underneath the Golden Gate Bridge – Clearly, the multiplayer map showcased in the last sequence of the trailer takes place underneath the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA.

Medals return – The player earns a “Skeet Shooter” medal that appears rather similar to the medals earned in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Kill-feed placement – The Kill-feed is now placed on the bottom right-hand quadrant of the player’s HUD, just above the score counter.

Exo-Suit abilities – It appears that the soldier in the last sequence is equipped with two Exo-Suit abilities, each with their own battery indicator. Those abilities likely range from moves like boost jumps or boost dashes to other abilities like cloak, extra strength, or different types of vision. Their use will likely be limited by draining battery power. How one might recharge their abilities is unknown.

Point Streaks return – Two selected streak rewards are displayed on the right-hand side of the player’s HUD. It also indicates he is 600 points away from his first streak and 700 points away from his second. After killing an opponent for 100 points, those scores are reduced to 500 and 600. Therefore, points will count down until a streak reward is achieved, as opposed to tallying up points or kills as in previous titles. Additional points can likely be achieved by completing objectives, as in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Players will be made aware when they are making noise and are appearing on the mini-map – The player’s position on mini-map is highlighted in red when he fires his weapon. It likely acts as a way to indicate to the player that he or she is making noise and is appearing on other players’ mini-maps.

Field Order Rewards might return and may be bigger than ever – Chances are good that the massive tidal wave that towered over and crashed into the map at the end of the last sequence was called in by a player who achieved a specific Field Order Reward, as in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Weapons – It’s really hard to make out, but the second Kill-feed entry in the last still almost looks like a machete of some sort, though we’re undoubtedly mistaken. Other than that, the player appears to be wielding a relatively standard sub-machine gun. We’re guessing sub-machine gun due to its silhouette in the Kill-feed.

Time to Kill – We noticed it’s pretty fast. The players (8 on each team – 16 players total) are likely playing on a LAN connection in this teaser, so, in practical application, TTK might vary depending on connection.

We’re happy to see Point Streaks returning and are pretty excited about some of the new Exo-Suit abilities. They’re sure to be a game changer. The slight improvement to the mini-map is also a nice touch. New map layouts are likely to offer totally new experiences as designers must now accommodate for vertical gameplay.

Anything else you might have caught that we didn’t? Let us know in the comments! What are you most excited about so far?

Keep your sights on MP1st, as all will be unveiled this August 11 when Sledgehammer Games unveils Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s multiplayer in full.

The Last of Us: Remastered Now Available For Download On PS4

For those waiting for the release of The Last of Us: Remastered PlayStation 4 version, you’ll be happy to know that the game has finally gone live in North America.

Screenshot_12

You’ll be given the option to download either the single-player or the multplayer first. The game weights in at nearly 45GB, so expect it to take a couple, to several hours, depending on your internet speeds. Though, if you plan on jumping in on Multiplayer, 8GB is all what’s needed to get started. For those who don’t see the download yet available, you may either restart the console, visit the PS Store, or check the what’s new live area on the PS4.

Additionally, it may not be available in certain regions, or the the store is just getting hammered and some aren’t getting the download prompt. It may be wise to wait until later for the store to settle down. For those in Europe, the auto-download should kick-in in a few days when the game releases there.

The Last of Us After Credit Deleted Ending Detailed, Takes Place Four Years After The Game

To the surprise of the attendees who went to see The Last of Us Live theater event, Naughty Dog showed off an exclusive live acted scene that was in the concept stage and originally planned to be shown post credits in The Last of Us.

The Scene as described by attendees:

“The scene takes place at Tommy dam one night 4 years later. Joel talks about how Tommy trying to get Joel hitched to a girl named Esther. El lies acting fairly distant, probably conflicted about joels lie. Joel then said he has a special gift for her and busts out a guitar. Then he plays a special song for her. Then he gives her guitar and promises to teach her. The scene ends with her striking a note on the guitar”

Niel also stated that this scene will never be released and that this was a goodbye to Joel and Ellie.

Oddly enough, the scene seems to match up a bit with a concept art by a Last of Us concept artist, Marek Okon. He stated that this doesn’t have anything to do with the sequel, though one can’t help but wonder now.

The team has been hinting for some time that a potential sequel to The Last of us is in the talks, though nothing is solid. It would be interesting if they plan on continuing from where the title left off, or perhaps with whole new characters. Either way, we hope to get more as the multiplayer for the original one was an absolute blast.

Don’t forget, The Last of Us: remastered is set to release on the PS4 tomorrow.

Opinion – Battlefield Hardline’s Delay Could Make or Break the Franchise

Battlefield Hardline has faced scrutiny from the gaming community since the very second it was leaked back in May. After two weeks with the first Hardline Beta on PC and PlayStation 4, though a handful of fans became excited for something new, some veterans of the series thought to themselves (and out loud to the interned), “A glorified map pack for $60? I’ll pass.”

Now, in a surprise move made by publisher EA and developer Visceral Games, the cops and robbers themed Battlefield spin-off has been delayed into early 2015. As EA EVP Patrick Söderlund stated, much of the reasoning is because “…things like the cops and robbers fiction maybe wasn’t shining through properly, you know? Is it playing like a military game, but it should be a cops and robbers game? This move not only allows Visceral more time and head room to continue hammering away at the next Battlefield installment, but it introduces a new threat for the rookie Battlefield developer, despite the studio’s honorable and commendable decision.

BFH

Battlefield 4’s launch and continuing struggle has left everyone who bought into the game — as well as into subscriptions to services like Premium — a sour taste in their mouth and a new heightened sense of caution when it comes to pre-ordering upcoming titles from the publisher or coughing up the extra cash for season passes. Theories on why the game wasn’t delayed now circulate forums and comment sections, the most prominent one being that Electronic Arts rushed the game to launch in order to compete with launches like Call of Duty, or that QA at DICE is horrible and lazy, etc. Which ever is true, no one outside of DICE will ever know. Now, while DICE only has minimal involvement in Hardline, those doubts and sour feelings, unfortunately, are aimed at Visceral and their upcoming shooter.

Having announced Hardline’s delay to 2015, no longer are they able to take safety behind theories like, “We had to rush it out to in order to stay competitive with Call of Duty.” No longer can they say, “We weren’t given enough time.” With a nearly three year or more development cycle — let a lone the fact that the previous generation versions are being developed by anther studio entirely — Visceral has everything going for it, including time and resources. The studio is left with nothing but their ability, creativity, and imagination to make an impression on weary Battlefield fans.

With now heightened expectations, Visceral has to nail it.

BFH

This is how they’ve unwittingly created a major risk for themselves. First, they’ve raised the promise that Battlefield: Hardline will be of good quality thanks to more development time. This, in turn, translates to “It’ll be working on release without any hiccups.” It also goes hand in hand with a spike in interest that I’ve been seeing on places like Twitter and Reddit. Gamers who previously turned away from the title are being drawn back in with a promise that Visceral is making indirectly. So, if Visceral can’t deliver, I’m willing to bet that they will unintentionally commit Battlefield suicide. I’m not sure Battlefield fans can take another sub-par launch. Otherwise, they will walk.

To avoid this, Visceral Games must push the limits of innovation in a Battlefield game while also achieving a combo breaking stable launch that will not only put Hardline on the map, but will pave the way to a successful future for Battlefield. Some have interestingly pointed out that it’s quite the coincidence Visceral’s shooter is now launching around the same time that Battlefield Bad Company 2 was released in 2010, hailed by many as the best Battlefield title to ever grace shooter fans. This, however, remains to be seen. A lot is riding on Visceral and their delivery of the next big Battlefield game. While doubt may cloud the minds of gamers, we still all love a good “you proved us wrong” moment.

What are your thoughts on all of this? Do you think Visceral, with the extra time, can achieve a successful launch?

The scary question: If it fails, could it spell the end for Battlefield? Will it follow in the footsteps of the Medal of Honor franchise and fall by the wayside?

Tell us in the comments!

Next Mass Effect Multiplayer – “Competition Is Critical But Cooperation Is Bigger For Us,” says Producer

According to a BioWare Montreal producer on the Mass Effect team who spoke at a recent SDCC 2014 panel, any sort of multiplayer involved in the studio’s next Mass Effect game will likely revolve around co-operative gameplay, rather than competitive.

“Competition is critical but cooperation is bigger for us,” said producer Mike Gamble during the panel about multiplayer. “Cooperative MP is bigger for us [than competitive].”

Mass Effect 3 was the first title to introduce multiplayer to the series, predominantly known for its engrossing single player experience. It offered a four-player co-operative horde-style multiplayer mode that tasked players with either surviving waves of enemies or completing certain tasks. It was very well supported with updates, free content drops, and community events and would certainly be welcome back in BioWare’s next installment.

Other details from the panel indicated that the new Mass Effect title will place a heavy emphasis on exploration with the use of vehicles like the new and improved Mako. It doesn’t sound like a specific timeline for the game’s story was nailed down, but we do know that it won’t involve Commander Shepard. You can catch more notes and even images over on this NeoGAF thread.

What’s your take on Mass Effect multiplayer? Would you like to see it return in BioWare’s next Mass Effect game? Were you hoping for more competitive modes this time around? Tell us in the comments.
