More Titanfall Game Update 5 Details – Learn All About The Black Market

With Game Update 5, launching alongside Titanfall’s Frontier’s Edge DLC this July 31 on Xbox One and PC, players will be able to take part the the game’s newly introduced Black Market economy.

By next month, players will be able to earn and trade for special in-game Credits that can be spent on specific items. Note that this currency cannot be bought with real-life money. Like a Respawn Entertainment rep stated earlier this year, there will be no microtransactions in Titanfall.

Dropping more details on the new feature, designer David Shaver has rounded up everything we need to know about Titanfall’s Black Market right now in an official blog post.

In the Black Market, you’ll be able to buy Titan insignias based off of official insignias of elite units on both the IMC and Militia sides. Purchasing an insignia will unlock it for selection in your Titan Custom Loadout screens.

1Players will also be able to buy random packs of Burn Cards that are tied to specific themes or gameplay styles, so the chances that you’ll find something a little more in tune with your preferences are much better.

These Credits can be earned in the following ways, according to Shaver:

  • Match Victory
  • Match Completion
  • First Victory of the Day
  • Completing Daily Challenges
  • Selling Burn Cards

No longer will unwanted Burn Cards go to waste, which is great for those who tend to stick to a more specific deck of cards.

The Black Market will be available to players at level 11, after you’ve opened the Burn Card menu. Just like Burn Cards, however, the Black Market will be available to you after you Regenerate. Lastly, if you are level 50, you will earn a percentage of Credits for the XP you earn every match.

Game Update 5 will also introduce new Daily Challenges and a ton of other improvements to Titanfall that you can read all about right here.

Opinion – The Destiny of Timed Exclusive Content, What Does the Future Hold?

Timed exclusive content is nothing new. Microsoft got the ball rolling last generation when it started locking down Call of Duty expansions on the Xbox 360 for 30-day periods before jumping over to the PlayStation 3. To many, it was an annoyance. To others, it was bragging rights. But for the most part, it was more or less harmless. 30 days isn’t all that long to wait. But more importantly, when you get your hands on that content, it’s still relevant. Can we say the same thing for content over a year old?

In a move that has baffled many and been a point of contention among console flag wavers the past few weeks, Destiny developer Bungie has struck a deal with publisher Activision to lock down content to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 for at least one year or more before making its way to Xbox One and Xbox 360. Looking at this without console prejudice, is there really any argument that can make a move like this sensible? I know, I know. It’s just business.

destiny-exodus-blue-screen-02-ps4-us-07jul14

Looking back at the last generation of consoles, let’s grab our best example of additional game content that took too long to hit another machine and didn’t quite help out relations between developer and gamer. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released to the masses with great fanfare, glowing reviews, and massive sales. Everyone was playing Skyrim. Bethesda released a string of amazing DLC that, for one reason or another, just couldn’t bring itself to launch on the PS3 console. It wasn’t exactly a preconceived timed exclusive agreement but a development hiccup within the studio, and by the time they’d ironed out the kinks, it was an over 7-month delay. Many PS3 gamers had given up by this time and sold their copy of the game or had simply moved on to the next flavour of the month.

In order to combat the fact that the shine on this DLC had long since worn off, Bethesda decided to release one piece of content a week at a 50% discount from its regular price. A noble thing to do, no doubt, but even at that cost savings, for many gamers, it was just too late. A simple search on VGChartz shows that not only did it piss PS3 gamers off, it also killed off Skyrim’s sales on that console (8.03 million global on Xbox 360 and 5.57 million on the PS3). Let’s not forget the fact that this is all single player content that you can pick up and play at any time. How irrelevant do you think that content would have been if it was multiplayer DLC?

Fast forward a couple years and here we are now with Destiny. If you’re a PS4 owner, you’re likely doing a happy dance without a care in the world while you joyously play your Destiny beta and await the release of the game in September. If you’re an Xbox One owner, you’re likely bemoaning the fact that you had to wait a few days to do even that. You try to block out the thoughts of getting screwed out of content, but it’s probably bothering you just the same. Of course, I am embellishing here, but the fact remains that Xbox One owners are getting the shaft. It also begs the question; will overall sales of Destiny suffer on Xbox One due to this disparity?

destiny-ships-screen-02-ps4-us-07jul14

I, like many others out there, am lucky enough to own both of these competing consoles so my views on this are purely objective. This doesn’t mean I’m going to purchase Destiny for my Xbox One, of course. Why on earth would I spend the same amount of money on a product but get less for my return? I’m no mathematician, but I know simple economics when I see them. A lot of Xbox One owners are likely asking themselves the same question as they realize they will be without a co-op mission, multiplayer map, and oodles of gear and cosmetic fluff. Not only that, if they purchase the season pass for Destiny’s expansions, they’ll be shortchanged there too for an entire year! How would gamers have felt if they had paid for the same expansion DLC in, say, Battlefield 3, but one console only received 3 out of the 4 new maps, getting access to the 4th map one year later? By then, Battlefield 4 is already out. Putting it into that sort of perspective makes it clear that it’s just an odd practice. The game is already sold and in the hands of gamers. Why continue to lobby for a console maker after the fact? Oh, I know… money.

But wait… it’s not like they won’t get it right? The simple fact is that when this year-old content is eventually released, there’s a good chance that it just won’t matter. One almost wonders why Bungie and Activision don’t come out and call it what it really is; console exclusive DLC. In a year from now, how many Xbox One owners will be actively playing Destiny? If I were to venture a guess, I’d simply say not nearly as many as during launch. Even with the enticement of finally getting this formerly exclusive content, the odds are that Xbox gamers just won’t care, so why not just call it console exclusive content and maybe even knock a few dollars off the Xbox season pass, if the content is significant enough? Otherwise, telling a large portion of your audience that they’ll get the content one year later just comes across as insulting, no matter how you word it. While details of the pricing or availability of this content is non-existent at this point in time, it’s a fair assumption to say that the point is moot anyways. Half price? Who cares!? We finally have Half-Life 3!

Destiny

It’s tough to fault the devs and publishers for the trend of timed exclusive content as we all know Microsoft and Sony aren’t afraid to whip out the cheque books to secure their audience. The issue at hand is the question of whether or not it’s a fair practice to the consumer to expect them to pay the same price for less and for such a lengthy period. Not only that, this extensive time lapse between the availability of the extra content leads us to wonder what the next inevitable step is; fully console exclusive DLC on multiplatform titles? That’s a debate for another time, but even a multi-console owner can see that it is dangerous waters to be wading in. Choosing a copy of a game based on which extra content you want more or if you’re a completionist facing the reality of possibly purchasing more than one copy is an issue that comes to mind. But what’s the worst part? When Destiny launches this September 9, it’s going to be your own hard-earned dollars spent on their product that tell these companies that these sort of practices are okay. Let’s face it; whether you’re an Xbox or PlayStation gamer, you’re not not going to buy Destiny, right?

What are your thoughts on this trend? Is Bungie just conducting business, or are they alienating an entire console base? It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the future, but it seems like we’re on the cusp of some big changes in the industry and we have to ask whether or not they’re good ones.

Titanfall Game Update 5 First Details – Will Introduce “Black Market” In-Game Currency, Daily Challenges, and More

Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment has been dropping details on the shooter’s next major game update during a live stream of their upcoming Frontier’s Edge DLC.

According to Titanfall community manager Abbie Heppe, Game Update 5, launching alongside the upcoming DLC, will introduce “Black Market” in-game currency. The currency is purely in-game, meaning players won’t be able to buy it with real-life money. Instead, players can earn the currency through in-game challenges and even selling unwanted Burn Cards. Players will be able to use that currency to purchase preferred Burn Cards as well as additional Titan Insignias which were introduced in Game Update 4.

Players can also expect Daily Challenges to make their debut. Other improvements include notifications when a friendly Pilot is riding your Titan, new DLC achievements, multi-GPU support for PC players, and a number of significant fixes and performance optimizations for the 120HZ bug, frame rate issues, screen tearing, and bandwidth. The studio is also introducing a new Gen 1 player emblem.

Details of the Frontier’s Edge DLC and Game Update 5’s launch date are still under wraps, but you can watch the DLC stream with Respawn developers while it’s live right here. Expect detailed patch notes next week, says Heppe.

As for the very near future, the studio also confirmed that the 2 vs. 2 mode Wingman Last Titan Standing will soon replace Marked For Death in Titanfall’s Featured Playlist. Marked for Death will still be available in Private Matches.

Destiny Public Space Player Count Not Limited By Technology, Matter of ‘What Feels Good’

Destiny‘s world is filled with mystery and magic, but that’s not just limited to the game’s rich fiction and setting. What goes on behind the scenes, technically, is also pretty magical.

Destiny isn’t quite a traditional MMO. You’re not adventuring or trading with thousands of players on a single server at one time. Instead, Bungie’s online set up with Destiny mimics that of a modern multiplayer shooter where players are connected to lobbies of smaller amounts of players. The only difference here is the rate at which players enter and leave the play space and how well the whole is process is hidden to the player.

Bungie’s Eric “Urk” Osborne told IGN that, “Pretty much anywhere there’s public spaces, [matchmaking is] sort of an endless stream. So it’s happening as people are coming and going constantly. So all that matchmaking technology’s happening behind the scenes, you don’t see the gathering state, you don’t see any of the tech. We really want that to feel seamless. So, it should feel, especially in The Tower, very populated.”

During our behind-closed-doors look at the game shortly prior to E3, I asked Bungie developers how many players can be match-made into a session at one time. The answer I got was that it was something the studio was still hammering down, and so they couldn’t quite tell me an exact number.

It seems that Osborne gave the same sort of workaround answer to IGN, but what he did mention is that “the upper limit is really not bounded by the technology.”

“It’s what feels good for us,” he added. “We don’t want it to feel too crowded. We don’t want it to feel overwhelming.”

The approach appears similar to Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Online that dropped players into a 16-player online free-roam session by default. We’re just not sure if Destiny’s player count is any more or less. Of course, as we can see in the Beta, player vs. player modes are limited to either 6 vs. 6 or 3 vs. 3 game types, so that’s a bit of a different story.

What do you think? Has Bungie nailed the player count as it is, or do you wish you could interact with even more players in Destiny’s public spaces?

Destiny is currently in Beta testing on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The final product launches September 9 on those same consoles.

Battlefield Hardline Delayed Because It Didn’t Feel Like a True Cops and Robbers Game, Says EA EVP

During a recent EA Q1 FY2015 earnings call, EA Studios EVP Patrick Söderland shed a little more light on some of the feedback developer Visceral Games gathered from June’s Battlefield Hardline beta that directly influenced the company’s decision to push back the game’s launch to next year.

DICE VP and GM Karl Magnus Troedsson made the announcement earlier today, stating that Battlefield Hardline will launch in early 2015 in order to allow the development team more time to “push Hardline innovation further and make the game even better.” Troedsson added that the studio aims to add “new feature ideas direct from the community that will evolve the cops and criminals fantasy into a truly unique Battlefield Multiplayer experience.”

According to Söderland, the noteworthy feedback coming in during the Beta what what led to its one week extension, which Visceral hoped would allow even more ideas and criticisms to trickle through.

“We allowed people to play for a little bit longer, maybe, than we planned, because we found a lot of feedback from players in there, providing us valid information and feedback around features of the game and how the game felt, etc,” Söderland explained during the call. “And things like the cops and robbers fiction maybe wasn’t shining through properly, you know? Is it playing like a military game, but it should be a cops and robbers game?”

“We saw ideas around asymmetric gameplay, a bunch of really strong, good, well-thought ideas that we decided to listen to,” he added. “And having a long discussion with the team, and looking at where we were, we felt like the best thing for us was to give the development team a little bit of extra time and get the game to where we think it needs to be in order to be successful.”

To us, it sounds like the Visceral concluded that their Cops and Criminals-themed shooter wasn’t quite Cops and Criminal enough to be as convincing as they had originally hoped. That falls in line with some of the majority of the Battlefield community’s criticisms that Visceral’s Battlefield Hardline felt too similar to DICE’s Battlefield 4, which launched last year.

Thus far, reaction to the delay has been slightly mixed, though we’re noticing more positive responses than negative ones. Frankly, if the delay leads to a better Battlefield experience overall next year, we’re all for it.

Leave your thoughts in the comments below. Did EA and Visceral make the right decision?

Firmware Update 1.74 Hits PlayStation 4, Here’s the Changelog

As an army of PlayStation users rush to their PlayStation 4s to enter the recently re-launched Destiny Beta, many will notice a new prompt to download the mandatory PS4 Firmware update 1.74.

Patch notes are rather minimal for the just-released update. According to Sony, “System software stability during use of some features has been improved,” and that’s about it. Either way, you had better get the download out of the way so you can get back to your gaming activities.

Thanks, IGN.

Battlefield 4 Final Stand DLC Launch Delayed to End of 2014

Following EA’s recently announced decision to delay Battlefield Hardline’s launch to 2015, we also learned a little more about how it might effect some of the upcoming Battlefield 4 launches like DICE LA’s Final Stand DLC.

Dragon’s Teeth, which was recently released to Battlefield 4 Premium members last Tuesday, July 15, is still on course to hit non-Premium members next Tuesday, July 29. Final Stand, on the other hand, will be seeing a bit of a revised launch time frame due to the now open launch window this Fall.

According to EA CEO Andrew Wilson’s remarks during the company’s Q1 2015 financial earnings call, Battlefield 4’s Final Stand DLC has been moved back to launch during Q3 of EA’s fiscal year. That translates to a release anytime between October and December of 2014. It was originally planned to launch some time this Summer.

Not much is known about Final Stand, other than what we’ve seen in the most recent Battlefield 4 Premium teaser trailer and that it is in development at DICE LA.

Battlefield Hardline Is Being Delayed to Next Year, Will Launch ‘Early 2015’

In a surprising turn of events, DICE Vice President and General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson has announced that Visceral Games’ Battlefield Hardline, originally pinned at an October 21 release of this year, will be pushed back to launch in early 2015.

Here’s the note from Troedsson on the official Battlefield Blog.

Today we are announcing that Battlefield Hardline will launch in early 2015. Obviously, this is big news, so I’d like to address why we’re making this change.

Back at E3, we launched a beta for Hardline — we wanted to not only show you the game, but to let you play it for yourselves. Millions of you jumped in and had a great time.  As a result, the Visceral Games team learned a lot from players about what they wanted in the game. We’ve been pouring over the data and feedback, and have already been putting a lot of it right into the game and sharing it directly with you.

This feedback also spurred us to start thinking about other possibilities and ways we could push Hardline innovation further and make the game even better. The more we thought about these ideas, the more we knew we had to get them into the game you will all be playing. However, there was only one problem. We would need more time. Time that we didn’t have if we decided to move forward with launching in just a couple of months.

We decided that the right thing to do was to take more time to ensure Hardline is the best, most innovative Battlefield experience we can give to you, our fans.

Here are a few of the things the new timing will allow us to accomplish:

1. Multiplayer Innovation: Coming out of our E3 beta, internal focus tests, and work with our community, we have received a lot of great Multiplayer thinking. We’re going to be adding some new feature ideas direct from the community that will evolve the cops and criminals fantasy into a truly unique Battlefield Multiplayer experience.

2. Single Player Story Depth: In order to ensure our Single Player experience delivers on player expectations, we’re spending more time polishing our core features, as well as adding a few new ones that will support a deeper “crime revenge” story experience.

3. Stability: This has been a focus for our team since day one and we’re going to be using the extra time to continue to optimize the game for a stable launch. We have learned a lot from Battlefield 4, are continuing to learn from our Community Test Environment and will learn more from another Hardline beta. More time allows us to surface issues that the team can attempt to fix prior to launch.

We are doing all of this for one reason. Because we want Battlefield Hardline to be the best game it can be, and so that we can create the best environment for a smooth launch for our players. We will give you updates on our progress and we’ll regularly share updates along the way viaBattlefield.com/Hardline as well as the Battlefield social channels.

In addition to the ongoing development of Hardline, it’s important to note that the DICE teams continue to drive Battlefield 4. We continue to explore new opportunities for improvements and we are still releasing new content, including “Dragon’s Teeth,” the fourth expansion pack that launches worldwide on July 29, and “Final Stand” coming later this year.  We remain committed to giving you the best BF4 experience possible.

Karl Magnus Troedsson

DICE VP & Group GM

Probably not something you were expecting, right? What are your thoughts?

Battlefield Hardline is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions being developed by a separate studio.

A second Battlefield Hardline beta is expected to launch this Fall on all platforms.

Here’s a List of 100 Cars You’ll be Able to Drive in Forza Horizon 2

Microsoft and developer Playground Games are lifting the curtain on the first 100 cars to be featured in their upcoming open-world racer, Forza Horizon 2.

Thus far, the list boasts a wide range classes, both modern and classic, including Horizon 2’s poster girl herself, the Lamborghini Huracán. It’s also just the first half of the over 200 cars that will make an appearance in Horizon 2, so expect much more to come.

Titanfall Frontier’s Edge DLC Map Haven Revealed, New Screens

Today, developer Respawn Entertainment is introducing the last of three multiplayer maps being offered in Titanfall’s upcoming Frontier’s Edge DLC.

Meet Haven, a beach resort situated on the edge of a massive crater lake that caters to the wealthy elite of the Frontier.

“Pilots utilize the sheer walls of hotel skyscrapers to gain high ground while Titans take cover inside art galleries and luxury restaurants,” reads the studio’s latest blog entry. “The large interiors of some buildings can encourage discrete, pilot-only firefights, and Titans hold down strategic locations by engaging in between buildings and from the surrounding beach and roadway.”

Earlier this month, we got a look at Dig Site and Export, two additional maps that will join Haven in Frontier’s Edge DLC coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC some time in the near future.

The pack is included in Titanfall’s Season Pass, but non-pass holders will be able to pick it up for $9.99 when it releases.

Check out the new screens below:

The Last of Us: Remastered – Naughty Dog Details What’s in Multiplayer Factions

Along with a visually retouched story mode, The Last of Us: Remastered Edition is also getting a few upgrades in the multiplayer department with its next-gen release on the PlayStation 4 this July 29.

Naughty Dog lead multiplayer designer Erin Daly and game designer Quintin Cobb touched on what’s new in TLOU’s Factions multiplayer mode in a recent PS Blog entry, the most notable being a two times upgrade in frame rate and a boost in resolution.

In addition, the studio has also made a few tweaks to gameplay, loadouts, Trophies, and playlists. The duo also mentioned that more details on additional Factions DLC will be announced following the Remastered Edition’s release, so definitely stay tuned of you’re looking forward to more content.

Fans anxious to get a good look at the Remastered gameplay will be able to do so through Naughty Dog’s upcoming live stream on July 24 at 11:30 AM Pacific and 5:30 PM Pacific. Keep an eye on their official channel right here.

Here are a few of the important points to note from the recent Q&A with Daly and Cobb:

Q: What are the new features for Factions in The Last of Us Remastered?

Erin Daly: Well, first off we are running the game at 1080p and targeting 60 fps. The power of PS4 and some of our talented engineers were able to significantly improve the load times.

Quentin Cobb: On the gameplay side we made some important tweaks. The DLC map Trophies now require five downs or executions and deaths don’t matter. We added eighteen new tips for new players.

If you’re a new player you’ll start with 9 loadout points instead of 8. You’ll reach the max of 13 loadout points sooner as a result. All fifteen of our maps are in each playlist so the player pool will be consolidated. This means faster matchmaking and that you will have a greater variety of maps in each playlist! There’s a lot of great new stuff.

Q: What’s your absolute favorite new feature in Factions in the Remastered edition?

Quentin Cobb: Playing with the higher fps is by far my favorite feature. This improves gameplay dramatically and makes shooting much more precise. I find that gameplay in general is much more responsive and accurate.

Erin Daly: Yeah, agreed. Playing Factions running with higher fps is awesome. Everything feels much tighter and more precise, especially when it comes to gunplay. Players are really going to like it.

Q: I love getting Trophies. Will I be able to collect any new Trophies in the Remastered edition for Factions?

Quentin Cobb: Remastered will include all DLC Trophies along with the original game Trophies. No new Trophies were added but 8 of them were changed to be easier to earn.

Q: Will my The Last of Us Season Pass DLC content carry over?

Erin Daly: Yes, any weapons, survival skills, head items you have purchased on PS3 will carry over. You just need to go into your download list on PS4 and re-download them.

Q: Will we be seeing anymore DLC for Factions?

Erin Daly: Remember those head items some of our more eagle eye forums members caught a glimpse of? We made it work and those will be coming out.

Quentin Cobb: Well… yes, we’re also currently hard at work finishing up some cool new DLC for Factions. We’ll talk about it more after The Last of Us Remastered launches on July 29th.

In addition to a complete visual overhaul, new environments, extended levels, and new features, the mod also introduces some of the vehicles, weapons, new enemies, abilities from some of the more recent Halo releases, turning it into a sort of “best of” mod, if you will.

SPV3 launches in increments with its next release this November. The entirety of the mod should be out by Christmas of this year. Be sure to check out the release date trailer above to see it in action and follow along with the development process over on Halomods.com.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Studio Celebrates 5th Anniversary, Incoming “Surprise” This Thursday

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games is celebrating its 5th year as an independent developer with publishing partner Activision this week.

Sledgehammer Games kicked off its Call of Duty career when co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey began work on a third-person Call of Duty title set in the Vietnam era that was more in-tune with their previous work on the Dead Space series at Visceral Games. It was eventually put aside when the studio was called upon to assist developer Infinity Ward in the completion of 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Having made a name for themselves, Schofield and Condrey were eventually asked to lead the charge on their very own first-person Call of Duty project, officially moving the series to a three-year development cycle with partner Call of Duty studios, Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

We got a good look at their work during E3 2014 when the studio debuted the first Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare gameplay trailer. Now, fans anxiously await the reveal of Advanced Warfare’s highly anticipated multiplayer.

Schofield and Condrey posted this note on the studio’s official website:

Today, we celebrate our 5-year anniversary as an independent development studio with our publishing partner Activision. From the beginning, we’ve set out to create a unique studio founded on the values of hard work, transparency, and a culture that empowers developers to do the best work of their careers. From day one, we set a singular goal – to achieve excellence in everything we do.

We’ve had the chance to build our team from the ground up, hire the very best developers in the industry, and work on some of the biggest games in our industry. In 2011, we co-developed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, a game that went on to become one of the largest entertainment releases of all time and winning 2011 Action Game of the Year.

Since that time, our team has been heads down, hard at work on our next project: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – a true next-generation Call of Duty experience that signifies a new era for the franchise.

Declaring this week “HammerWeek,” the studio has scheduled a few activities to look out for this Monday through Friday, including a special “surprise” this Thursday, July 24.

#HammerWeek

  • Monday – 5th Anniversary and Photo Gallery
  • Tuesday –  Challenge Coin and Patch sweepstakes on Twitter
  • Wednesday – Exclusive Digital Content
  • Thursday – Surprise
  • Friday – Studio Happy Hour & Toast Photo Album

What do you think this surprise could be?

Check Out Destiny Running on the Xbox One, Beta Returns July 23 After Two Days of Maintenance

As originally promised, developer Bungie is bringing the Destiny Beta offline for two days of maintenance, closing off the first phase of testing on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

The Destiny Beta will return this Wednesday, July 23, before closing for good on Sunday, July 27. But what’s different this time out is that it will open up its doors to users to both Xbox One and Xbox 360 users.

Earlier, Bungie confirmed that the though the Xbox One will only run the Beta version of Destiny at a 900p resolution, it will hit that 1080p mark at launch, utilizing the extra GPU bandwidth that was freed up in June’s XDK update.

If you’re anxious to get a peek at what Destiny might look like running on the Xbox One at 1080p, IGN has the video:
