This Mortal Kombat X Video Shows Off Some Impressive Combos

E3 2014 came and went, but not without showcasing the most brutal Mortal Kombat game to date, Mortal Kombat X.

Despite the intense media coverage throughout the week of E3, we’ve yet to come across any game footage that dove deeper into the game’s combo system, nor any demonstration of each character’s capabilities.

However, we did stumble across a video from PC Games that manages to put a number of heavy-hitting Mortal Kombat X combos on display and gives you a better idea of the sort of the movement and fight mechanics built into the game. You can catch it below:

[youtube id=”AfjsjphU7y8″]

While you’re ogling at some of the marvelous combos featured in the video, there are also a few bits of new information that we can gather:

  • You can now trade hits, a first in Mortal Kombat. Previously, player 1 would have the advantage if both opponents would attack at the same time. [Go to 2:04-2:05.]
  • Kotal Kahn can summon totems mid-combo.

You can also notice much more fluidity in each character’s movements. What are your thoughts?

Mortal Kombat X is set to release sometime in 2015 for the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For those who haven’t been keeping up on the latest news, feel free to check out our round up.

Advanced Warfare – ‘The Soldier In Our E3 Demo is the Soldier You’ll See in Multiplayer,’ Says Sledgehammer

The guys and gals at Sledgehammer Games are keeping tight-lipped about Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s multiplayer and expectedly so as we slowly work through Activision’s rigid clockwork reveal process.

We got our first taste of Advanced Warfare during a single player demo that debuted at Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conference, as well as through a couple of behind-closed-doors events, and while we tried getting some multiplayer details out of studio heads Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, it looks we’ll have to wait until another day.

They can’t quite talk about it just yet, but the duo sure isn’t short on hints, however. Earlier, Condrey gave up a few small details to known Call of Duty YouTube personality Drift0r, mentioning Exo Skeleton Suits in multiplayer, enhanced player movement, new gadgets, and a key focus on gameplay balance.

Through recent interviews, we’ve also managed to snag a few more bits of info. In particular, both Schofield and Condrey seem to stress all “new” gear or tech and a focus on what sort of implications the Exo suit might introduce to Advanced Warfare’s multiplayer.

“We’ll have our own style. The exoskeletons are definitely in there and that’s the core of the game,” Schofield told Metro.

Condrey went on to explain: “Our multiplayer has what I’m going to call the biggest set of new, as you call it, cool gear that you’ve seen in a long time. It’s a big step forward, from three years in development we’ve been able to innovate across the game. Everything you saw [at E3]… just imagine what that’s going to mean for multiplayer.”

“You’re going to find that new is what it’s all about,” he added.

Meanwhile, Condrey also told Forbes that he hopes the same sort of gadgets highlighted in the E3 demos, like the Exo Suit Overdrive that enhances player reaction and the Mute Charge that deafens anyone in its vicinity, will appear in multiplayer “somehow.”

“Well, you can imagine that we want all these toys in multiplayer somehow,” he said. “We’ll have much more to share soon. But on the highest level, the Advanced soldier which our E3 demo showcased is the Advanced soldier you’ll see in multiplayer.”

Logically, not all the gadgets might appear exactly as shown in the single player demos, but it sounds like Sledgehammer will be providing Call of Duty gamers with a list of brand new toys to play with nonetheless, many which not everyone will find familiar.

What sort of abilities or gadgets did you catch in Advanced Warfare single player demo that you’d be interested to see implemented in multiplayer?

Keep your sights on MP1st for more on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, launching this November 4.

GTA Online Heists Delayed Yet Again, No New ETA Given, “I’m Not a Hipster” Weekend Event Detailed

Those still waiting for the arrival of online multiplayer Heists in Grand Theft Auto Online – which is pretty much everyone, or roughly 32.5 million gamers as of last February – are in for some disappointing news.

The long awaited GTA Online update that was supposed to release this Spring has yet again been delayed, according to a post on Rockstar’s Newswire, which the studio says is attributed to unforeseen complications. No new ETA was provided, but here’s what the Rockstar had to say:

For those of you asking about other upcoming GTA Online updates, we have lots more in store coming your way soon. We know many fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Online Heists that we had planned to release for you this spring, and they are taking more time to create than originally anticipated. We are very sorry for the delay, and are working hard to bring them to you as soon as we can.

“Please know that we are focused as always on making the best possible content for you to play and we are thankful to all of you for your patience, understanding and support. Stay tuned for more information on that as well as lots of other ongoing content updates, enhancements and additions to the world of GTA Online that are on the way.”

It’s looking more and more like Rockstar may release Online Heists on or around the launch of  Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Hopefully that’s not wishful thinking, though.

In related news, the same article does good job outlining all of the new GTA Online content included in the recently released I’m Not A Hipster update. You’ll also find details on GTA Online’s upcoming weekend event, beginning Jun 20, by following this link, or you can take a peek at the info graphic below.

Disappointed in the news? Keep your eyes and ears open for an ETA. Hopefully we’ll get one soon.

What Xbox One’s June XDK Update and 10% Extra GPU Power Means for Xbox Gamers

June’s XDK (Xbox Development Kit) update will offer developers “more access to GPU bandwidth, which provides more performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better,” according to Microsoft’s most recent news update. But what does that mean for Xbox gamers?

Well, that depends on the developer.

Following the update, developers will now have access to an additional 10% of extra GPU bandwidth that was previously reserved for system level processing which included Kinect-related skeletal tracking data. Director of development at Xbox software engineering Kareem Choudry says “titles that are not using skeletal tracking with Kinect can choose to use that portion of the system reserve for other purposes. We have also optimized the entire system so that titles have access to 100% of the Xbox One GPU for increased resolution and graphical effects,” he adds.

Does that mean you’ll now get 1080p visuals out of all your Xbox One games if you just unplug the Kinect sensor? Not really. “It is up to developers to utilize the June XDK for games in development to take advantage of these additional GPU resources,” says Kareem.

But even if developers decide to allocate that GPU power elsewhere, your Kinect sensor will still function at a basic capacity.

“Platform level voice commands such as ‘Xbox On,’ ‘Xbox, Record That,’ and ‘Xbox, Go Home’ will continue to work as they do today, as will any in-game speech commands or Snap mode,” explains Kareem. “The Kinect (RGB color) camera will still continue to work, so your friends can watch you while you’re playing your favorite games. Snap mode for TV, Achievements and other features will continue to work.”

What won’t work for games that do use the additional performance boost are the Kinect Depth and infrared sensors which enable biometric sign-in skeletal tracking, and controller pairing. But, don’t worry. All of that will be re-enabled upon visiting the Home screen, even while in the middle of a game.

Kareem says that Microsoft is “working with developers that have games in development to help them understand and take full advantage of what these changes have to offer.” Destiny developer Bungie has already publicly stated that it will be using the extra boost in performance to provide 1080p visuals on the Xbox One, matching that of the PlayStation 4. The same can be said for Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive.

At last, the Xbox One may finally shake it’s “Xbox 720” nickname.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Gets New Screens, Confirms The Return Of The Hornet Pistol

Can’t get enough of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and absolutely need something to tie you over until 2K Australia and Gearbox Software release another action-packed trailer?

Check out ten brand new screens that might just scratch the itch and read on to catch a quick breakdown of what we’re actually seeing:

Borderlands

Borderlands

Borderlands

Quickly observing the new screens, we get to see one of Wilhelm’s skills “Cyber Fist” in action, which is very reminiscent of Sentinel’s Rocket Punch move from the Marvel vs. Capcom cross over games.

Also, it appears that we can add the legendary Dahl pistol, the Hornet, to the growing list of orange-tier weapons as we see Athena holding one in her hand while the other three vault hunter’s stare at the recently opened loot chest.

Elsewhere, this screen also gives us a look at what appears to be the ‘hub-town’ for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. It appears to be a friendly Hyperion area with no signs of either Dahl nor space bandits.

Those details aside, it looks like The Pre-Sequel is shaping up nicely and will be providing Borderlands fans with some ever-so-pleasing visuals when it officially launches on October 14 for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Halo 5: Guardians’ Beta is a “Real Beta,” Says Franchise Director, Will Look at “Every Single Aspect”

With Halo 4 and years of development time on Halo 5: Guardians under their belt, developer 343 Industries can “no longer say [they’re] new to this franchise,” insists franchise development director Frank O’Connor.

That’s why the studio is going big with the upcoming Halo title on Xbox One. “We’ve been working on it for years now,” O’Connor told EuroGamer in a recent interview. “So our goal with it, fundamentally, is to make the best experience we can possibly make. Some of that means making it better with some of the learnings we’ve had over the years.”

Halo 5: Guardians was announced last May with more details outed during Microsoft’s E3 2014 presentation earlier this month.

But making a Halo game for Halo fans is not without its challenges. It’s “not as easy as it sounds,” according to O’Connor.

“Halo is different to different people. Some people think of Halo as this purely co-op experience. Some people only care about the story. Multiplayer guys don’t agree with each other on anything, period. DMR is the worst and best weapon.

“So, knowing you have such a disparate set of audiences as a subset of your overall audience and trying to figure out the best way to cater to them without compromising everyone else’s experience – that’s a hell of a balancing act. And it’s one we’ll always struggle with. I know our audience is changing.”

Fans will get a first look at what exactly 343 is up to once the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta launches on December 27, to which access is granted with any purchase of the upcoming Halo: The Master Chief Collection this November 11.

Gamers will get a taste of next-gen Halo running on an engine “purpose built for Xbox One,” said 343 studio head Bonnie Ross. But the beta won’t just be demo meant to generate hype. According to her, it’s launch one year prior to Halo 5’s release gives the studio plenty of time to “hone” the multiplayer experience.

“Later this fall we’ll talk about our full offering,” she said. “Very deliberately we’re doing it a year out to give us the development time to make sure we can take the feedback. It will be an interactive three week beta, meaning we will have multiple different ways for people playing to give us feedback so we can hone the multiplayer experience.”

O’Connor added that “it’s a real beta,” and not just “network data or performance data” test.

“Sometimes a beta is maybe a good way to test performance on your network. We’ll be looking at every single aspect of how people play this, and we have a lot of time to actually take meaningful feedback,” he explained.

“We’re trying to mine it for all the data we can get. Not just network data or performance data. It’s like, how are people playing? How are they adapting to the new features? How are they dealing with new weapons? There will be a huge amount of data for us to look at.”

We’ll be more than happy to supply 343 with that data after we get our anxious hands on the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta this Winter.

Ubisoft on Cancelled Rainbow Six Patriots, Rainbow Six Siege “a Better Solution”

Early last year, we learned that developer Ubisoft was hitting the breaks on a project that was then called Rainbow Six Patriots, a new tactical shooter that was to be the next installment in the popular Rainbow Six franchise.

The studio made it clear that it wasn’t quite dead, however, and that it was just being “remade,” and during Ubisoft’s E3 2014 press conference earlier this month, we learned exactly what it was being remade into: Rainbow Six Siege. The team showed off an over six-minute long gameplay demo that introduced some of the title’s newest ideas with a specific focus on multiplayer gameplay.

But why such a drastic departure from the Heavy-Rain-inspired sequences and near future tech shown off in Patriot’s target gameplay demo all the way back in 2012, and why the cancellation in the first place? RockPaperShotgun asked Ubisoft technical artist Oliver Couture.

“To be completely transparent, I worked on Patriots – on Rainbow Six for three-and-a-half years – and Patriots was old-gen. Xbox 360 and PS3,” he answered. “Next-gen consoles were just around the corner, and we were like, ‘OK, we want to also have a next-gen experience. What can we do for that?’ We were trying stuff out with destruction technology, and we realized destruction really changes the game. We tried to see how it could fit with old-gen, but it just didn’t work out. So for us it was just a better solution to clean the slate, reset, and make what’s best for the players.

“We’ve been working hard for the past year-and-a-half [on Siege].”

Patriot’s demo was clearly focused on the game’s innovative single player elements. RPS asked if any of what we saw back then might appear in one form or another in Siege’s single player experience. According to Couture, “The scope of the single-player is not completely clear yet.”

“We know that single-player is also an important part of the Rainbow Six experience,” he said. “We understand that while this year we showed multiplayer – because we want to have fun playing against each other internally, it’s a good test to know if a game is fun – but we are 100 percent aware that single-player is a big part. We’re currently working on that too.”

“The scope of the single-player is not completely clear yet, so I cannot really elaborate on it. All I know is that the message we have on the production floor is like, ‘All the comments online, people are always talking about single-player. So we’re gonna have something for them.’ But I can’t say if it will be more cinematic [like Patriots was] yet.”

It sounds like things are still early in the production stages, so it might be a while until we hear more from the Rainbow team at Ubisoft. Are you interested to learn more about Siege’s single player campaign, or do you just want to dive into more multiplayer details?

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare To Utilize ‘New Story-Telling Techniques,’ New Behind the Scenes Video

Video game developer Sledgehammer Games hopes bring their strong story telling techniques to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare this Fall in a unique near-future spin on the series.

In a recently launched behind the scenes video, Sledgehammer Games creative director Bret Robbins talks about the process of creating Advanced Warfare’s story and world and how the studio has worked with both real life operators and futurists to create a more believable experience. You can watch the video above, and also see some of the studio’s work in action in Advanced Warfare’s debut gameplay trailer that aired during Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conference.

Of course, it certainly helps that experienced personalities like Troy Baker and Kevin Spacey are lending their talents to the production as well.

We know you play Call of Duty for multiplayer, but are you finding Sledgehammer’s story-telling approach a little more intriguing this time around?

Grand Theft Auto 5 on PS4 Looks Like Real Life Compared to PS3, See The Differences

It’s hard to tell exactly how much better Rockstar’s open-world title looks on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC without directly comparing it to the versions that released earlier last year on previous generation hardware.

That’s why, the folks over at Digital Foundry have done their best to recreate all of the scenes in Grand Theft Auto 5’s PlayStation 4 trailer that debuted during Sony’s E3 2014 press conference on the PlayStation 3. Watch the video above so you can get a better idea of what sort of visual and technical upgrades the title will be getting when it re-launches this Fall on three new platforms.

According to Rockstar, the re-release will boast “increased draw distances, finer texture details, denser traffic, and enhanced resolutions” along with “new wildlife, upgraded weather and damage effects,” and much more detail. If you weren’t able to spot those improvements before, you should have an easier time in the video above.

Some of those PS4 scenes look near life-like, if you ask us, minus the absence of all that smog. What are your thoughts? Do the upgrades warrant another purchase of GTA 5?

Battlefield Hardline Doesn’t ‘Necessarily’ Mean an Annualized Battlefield, Says EA

Back in 2011, DICE expressed its thoughts on an annual Battlefield, admitting that it might ruin the franchise it took so long to built.

While both Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline are suggesting otherwise, EA Studios executive vice president Patrick Söderlund says that it doesn’t “necessarily” mean what fans are thinking.

Speaking with Polygon and reminiscing about how Battlefield Hardline came to be, Söderlund said that “Karl-Magnus [Troedsson], who runs DICE studios, and Steve Papoutsis, who runs Visceral, basically met in Barcelona almost three years ago and they came to me and said ‘Hey, we have an idea,’ actually, the idea of a cops and robbers type Battlefield game has been with us — me and the DICE team — for more than ten years. There are early prototypes from, like, 2000 or 2001 of a game that we called back then Urban Combat. This has been lingering and we’ve been wanting to do something like this.”

Söderlund continued, mentioning that “It doesn’t necessarily mean that we need to annualize Battlefield and that’s the way it’s going to be forever and ever, I understand that some people may look at it that way but that’s what happened.”

During E3, Söderlund also explained, “The EA that I’m trying to help build isn’t an EA that needs to annualize everything.”

Something to remember is that both Visceral Games and DICE are set to launch the newest era of Star Wars games, along with side projects like Mirrors Edge 2, which might make production on annual Battlefield titles a bit difficult, unless EA decides it’s time to outsource to another developer again.

What are your thoughts on all of this? Let us know in the comment section below!

Report – New Battlefield Veteran Program Rewards Players With 10 Hours of BF3 Played [Updated]

Update

In response to the news, Battlelog forum moderator “ThePoolshark” has pointed out to us that “The Veteran Program was an idea [the studio] thought about creating but it never came into fruition.”

“We care about our fans and are always looking for ways to give back and thank them for their support of Battlefield.”

With that, it’s not clear if the reported Veteran program will ever actually come to fruition, but it can’t hurt to keep your eyes and ears open for news regardless.

Original Story

As the war rages on in-game, it looks like Battlefield developer DICE is hoping to boost your confidence and say ‘thank you’ with a new Battlefield 4 Veteran Program that rewards players who’ve played at least 10 hours of Battlefield 3.

While not officially announced yet, it looks like those who visit the site’s page can snag up their reward for being a hardened veteran on the Battlefield. While you must have had played 10 hours of Battlefield 3 to even qualify, the deal gets better for those who own more titles of the franchise, giving you more “exclusive items” for being a faithful fan.

The site URL will now lead to a “sorry, that page doesn’t exist” notification, but here’s what it did look like.

PvZ: Garden Warfare – Latest PC Footage Shows New Map and “Fruit” Variants For Peashooter And Cactus Classes

PopCap HD may not have showcased any upcoming content for their shooter, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, during E3 2014, but more recent PC footage contains some add-on DLC that we may be able to look forward to in the near future.

The video above, courtesy of Shack News, gives us a small glimpse of what appears to be new “fruit” variants for the Peashooter and Cactus classes. Alongside these colorful new variants, we also get a glimpse of a new map.

No date was given as to when we can expect to toy around as these fruit variants or get to enjoy the new map, but given that it was showcased on the PC build and not the PlayStation 4 build, it’s highly plausible that it will launch alongside the PC release this June 24.

Elsewhere, the creative director for Garden Warfare will give us an update on the community created Peashooter tomorrow:

Given that the new Peashooter has been in the works for quite sometime, it wouldn’t be surprising if it got changed to the Peashooter that was spotted in the video above.

Garden Warfare is available now for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, with the PC receiving it on June 24 and, finally, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on August 19.

Hardline Spin-Off “Still a Full Range of the Battlefield Experience,” Says Visceral MP Designer

Nearly a week into Battlefield Hardline’s ongoing multiplayer beta on the PlayStation 4 and PC, fans of the series are beginning to get a good feel for what Visceral has to offer in their take on the popular and long-running military shooter franchise.

It’s clear that thoughts are mixed, however. While some appreciate the Beta’s focus on transportation vehicles, smaller maps, and more intimate game modes, there are those asking, ‘Where is the ‘true’ Battlefield experience – all-out warfare on land, sea, and air, with tanks, attack boats, and jets?’

Last year’s Battlefield 4 offered just that as its core pillars of gameplay. Meanwhile, Hardline’s beta is clearly only a small taste of the game’s complete offerings, but it leaves a lasting first impression regardless. So how will Visceral sell a seemingly smaller Battlefield this Fall that in many ways appears almost scaled down from titles like Battlefield 4?

I asked Visceral lead multiplayer designer Thaddeus Sasser this exact question during my trip to EA redwood earlier this month.

“Well, I think ‘small’ is an interesting way to describe it,” he said. “I would say that what we actually have is the full range of the Battlefield experience, as go to the giant maps all the way down to the small maps. So we still want to provide that same range of experiences that Battlefield has to offer. So, I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s smaller, per se. It’s more – I don’t want to say ‘intimate,’ but it’s a little bit more personal on a cops and criminals level.”

According to Sasser, Hardline has it’s own unique character, one that you won’d find in any other Battlefield game, and that is what the studio appears to be banking on when it comes to attracting Battlefeld fans to the title.

“You know, when you’re fighting as soldiers vs. soldiers, it’s a little more anonymous. It’s a little more impersonal,” he explained. “When you get down to it, like Steve [Papoutsis] mentioned earlier, when the cops are calling at the criminals, ‘Drop your weapons,’ and the criminals are like, ‘You’ll never take me alive,’ you get this kind of interplay with a lot of kind of funny, clever moments with this kind of back-and-forth dialogue that I think makes that personality or that inter-personal conflict – brings it closer to home.

“So, I think that’s a really interesting – more interesting way to think about it, to say it’s smaller, because smaller immediately thinks, ‘Oh, it’s only 12-players max and it’s tiny maps.’ No, no, no. It’s none of that. It’s still a full range of the Battlefield experience but it’s a little bit more personal.”

Sasser expressed similar thoughts on Battlefield Hardline’s vehicle offering, saying that “one of the great things about Battlefield’s vehicles is that they have a wide range of vehicles, and we still support that same kind of range [in Hardline].”

“You’re going to have watercraft. You’re going to have landcraft. You’re going to have aircraft. We’re not going to talk about specifically which ones, but we’re going to cover the spectrum.”

If you haven’t yet, be sure to read and watch my Battlefield Hardline preview where I drill Sasser with more questions about Visceral’s spin-off title launching this October 21 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Titanfall Expedition DLC and Game Update 3 Drop Tomorrow on Xbox 360

Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment has announced that the title’s first downloadable content add-on, along with the game’s third major client patch, will be hitting the Xbox 360 tomorrow, June 17.

Both Game Update 3 and the Expedition DLC made their way to the Xbox One and PC versions of the game last May, but as the studio detailed in a blog post earlier, Xbox 360 updates will lag behind as Bluepoint Games works on porting content over to the previous generation version.

Expedition introduces three new multiplayer maps that you can get for $9.99 as a standalone purchase, or simply download at now additional cost if you’re already a Titanfall Season Pass holder. For all the details on Game Update 3 be sure to read up on the official patch notes here.

Another major update will be making it’s way to Titanfall later this month that introduces two new game modes, new Titan customization options, new Burn Cards, and much more. You can read up on my chat with Respawn art lead Joel Emslie to learn all about it.
