The Road to 30: A Leveling Guide for Final Fantasy XIV

With the recent launch of Final Fantasy XIV for PS4, now is as good a time as any to join the realms of Eorzea. The player population is very high and with new servers opening up such as Jenova, you won’t feel as if you’re much lower on the totem pole than other players in game. If you haven’t subscribed to the game already but plan on doing so shortly, you’ll no doubt want to play catch up and level as fast as possible. Having recently unlocked my first job (the Dragoon), I figured I’d discuss some of my best practices for getting to 30 as quickly as possible. While some of these tips might seem obvious, others are lessons I learned after making some time consuming mistakes. Hopefully after reading this article, you’ll be enlightened enough not to make the same ones. So without further ado:

Attune to all Aethernet Fragments

This will save more time than you can imagine. Many of the initial quests are fetch quests involving the character having to talk to another NPC, and then return to the initial NPC for the reward. Often times these two NPC’s locations can be far apart inside a city. Instead of consuming time running from point A to point B, make use of the Aethernet Fragments which allow for instant teleportation to various points in the city (side hint: if you’re having trouble figuring out which Aethernet Fragment is which, look at your map and see what named building is closest to a Fragment). Furthermore, once you attune to all the Aethernet Fragments in one city, you unlock bonus fragments that will take you instantly to any of the exits in the city.

Before taking on any quest or testing your mettle on the battlefield, track down all Aethernet Fragments in your city.

Use Sprint

You might think that being an MMO and being in a populated city, FFXIV would follow MMO tradition and disable all of your abilities when in a city. This is true to an extent, but one ability that is not disabled is sprint. In conjunction with Aethernet Fragments, this should help you get around town even quicker. Even when exploring areas where enemies are around, feel free to spam Sprint as much as possible. While it depletes your TP entirely, you can easily run to safety from any enemy and the TP gauge refills very quickly. Better yet, the TP gauge doesn’t even have to be completely filled before you can activate sprint again.

If you want to complete quests in the shortest time possible, use Sprint all the time.

Skip Cutscenes

I’m at a point in my life where I know what type of voice acting to expect in a Square-Enix title. And with that expectation, I know any sense of envelopment is going to be completely and utterly lost on me. So instead of sitting through lengthy cutscenes with awful dialog and terrible voice acting, I chose to just skip the cutscenes. It’s not as if I’m missing out on much as I can still get the gist of what’s happening, and any valuable info pertaining to the quest at hand will just be placed automatically in my journal.

If you want to level up fast and simultaneously not have to question how these writers got paid, skip every cutscene.

Don’t Stop Doing Story Quests

This was a huge mistake on my part. Just as I unlocked airship travel from one city to the next, I ended up not talking to the NPC which would give me my next story quest. I had a ton in my list already, and I figured it could wait. I ended up getting sucked into other quests and cities and before long, I was about 10 levels of what my story quests were expecting. This made completion of the story quests easy once I got back around to doing them, but there are so many story quests. There’s essentially one quest for each level, but a lot of them have multiple parts in order to complete them which ends up being time consuming. By ignoring my story quests, I missed out on the chance of getting a personal Chocobo much sooner, which leads to my next tip…..

Get a Chocobo At Level 20

Once you complete the level 20 story quest, you’ll be given the opportunity to join a Grand Company. Being in a Grand Company allows you to partake in more challenging and more rewarding quests than the ones available from the Levemate. The exp bonuses are much better, but instead of earning gil, you earn tickets. These tickets can be redeemed with the Quartermaster located at the Grand Company’s HQ. One of the first rewards you can get with your tickets is a Chocobo license. Ignore every other item you might be even remotely interested in until you have your Chocobo license secured. With the license, you can summon a Chocobo on a whim increasing your travel speed significantly. Not only does this save you money not having to rent a Chocobo, use a porter, or teleport ($$$), but if you ever dismount, you can quickly summon the Chocobo right back.

By ignoring my story quests, I made leveling to 30 longer and more difficult by A) not doing Grand Company Leves instead of regular ones and B) having a Chocobo available to travel to my destinations faster.

Grab Every Quest

If you see an exclamation bubbles on your map, you should be talking to those NPC’s before setting out for the battlefield. Until you travel to other cities, you really don’t need to exert discretion about which quests to accept and which ones not to. Not only do they give valuable XP and gil, but most of them reward you with armor for your character. If you keep up on doing your quests, chances are you’ll get a full set of armor without needing to buy pieces off the market. Don’t forget about your class quests either. Class quests are typically available every 5 levels and will reward your character with new weapons and class specific skills.

If you find there is a shortage of quests for you to complete, don’t resort to grinding. Leves and Guildhests are available from specific NPC’s. These are a great way to help boost your XP so that you can reach the next level.

Avoid Leveling Alternate Classes Right Away

A nice addition to XIV is the ability to switch classes at any time. Not only does this afford a player an opportunity to experiment, but the cross class system also allows players to pull certain abilities from one class and use them with another. This gives a player the sense that they are constantly progressing — as opposed to starting over — whenever they switch classes. There’s no sense in going crazy with class experimentation (at least not right away anyways). An XP bonus is given to a player whenever they try to level up a secondary class so that it can catch up to the primary class. The best rule of thumb is to maintain a 2:1 ratio with class levels. So let’s say your primary is a LVL16 Gladiator. In order to capitalize the most on the XP bonus, you shouldn’t level any secondary class past LVL8 until you get the primary class leveled higher. Leveling secondary classes becomes particularly important later on in the game when you want to unlock a job. Jobs require a primary class at LVL30 and a secondary class a level 15. However, there’s no sense in missing out on the XP bonus to help shave off valuable leveling time.

Ultimately, level your primary class until it makes sense to start leveling a secondary class.

Those are some of my tips that will come in handy leveling to 30. Currently, I just unlocked the Dragoon job, and feel like I’ve played enough FFXIV to give my final impressions so stay tuned for those in a future article.

What do you guys make of FFXIV? Are you enjoying the more story based approach over FFXI? Let us know in the comments below.

Get “Egg-Stra” XP In Call of Duty: Ghosts Devastation With This Secret Challenge

Call of Duty developers Infinity Ward and Neversoft are giving Ghosts and Extinction fans a chance to score a bit of “egg-stra” XP through a secret in-game challenge found in the recently launched Devastation DLC – now out on Xbox Live and coming May 8 to PSN and PC.

As was the case previously with Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Onslaught DLC, hidden on all four of the new Devastation multiplayer maps are Alien eggs tucked away in four hard-to-spot locations. Shooting all four will grant you a bit of bonus XP, but going the “egg-stra” step and destroying an Alien Hive in Devastation’s Mayday Extinction map afterward will score you an additional Xbox Achievement or PlayStation Trophy.

Infinity Ward recently tweeted a few images hinting at some of the locations of these Easter eggs. Can you find them?

Call of Duty 2014 – ‘Competitive Scene is Very Important to Sledgehammer Games’

Our first real peek at Call of Duty 2014 is just around the corner as we approach the month of May, but already we’re learning about the sort of plans studio head Michael Condrey and his team at Sledgehammer Games have in store for their debut entry in the series.

I had the chance to sit with Condrey for a brief period of time, watching the 2014 Call of Duty Championship last month, and based off of my own impression of the Seldgehammer co-founder, I could tell that he and his team were passionate about fostering a strong competitive community around their upcoming, unannounced Call of Duty title.

Studio members at Sledgehammer attended both Call of Duty: Ghosts’ and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s Championship last year where they were seen actively taking notes about the experience as well. As Call of Duty YouTube personality drift0r points out in a recent video, they were serious about picking up on tips and gathering feedback.

In response to that video, Condrey confirmed on Twitter that “The competitive scene is v.important to @SHGames,” adding that they “Can’t wait to talk eSports!”

While it hasn’t been officially announced, it’s more than likely that Sledgehammer Games will be host to a 2015 Call of Duty Championship event.

In March, Sledgehammer co-founder Glen Schofield told his audience at GDC 2014 that Call of Duty 2014 will be the “most ambitious, most creative game [they’ve] ever made”. We also know that the studio will be taking a “next-gen first” approach to the game, focusing development on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC versions of the shooter.

The Division – New Screens Show Off a True to Life New York Setting

Baskets of Easter eggs weren’t the only thing the Easter bunny dropped of this weekend. How about a couple of goodies for fans of Massive Entertainment’s upcoming open-world, MMO shooter, The Division?

A quick hunt through the studio’s Twitter feed reveals two new screens of the game that were delivered over the course of the weekend. Both images, which we presume are in-game, display more of the dark indoor environments you and your friends will explore for weapons and gear, as well as more of the game’s open-world Big Apple setting.

“Immersion is very important to us,” said Massive brand art director Rodrigo Cortes about the studio’s work with the powerful Snowdrop game engine earlier, outlining the team’s goal to achieve the “same scale and level of fidelity that you expect New York to have.”

Check out the shots below and let us know what you think.

Killer Instinct Season Two Will Contain 8 More Characters

Microsoft developers discuss Killer Instinct and its future during yet another Play XBLA stream. This week, we learn about plans for the Season Two of the fighting game in the hands of new developer, Iron Galaxy.

Season Two, much like the first season, will add eight new characters to Killer Instinct’s roster. Exactly which characters is still up in the air. However, judging from previous XBLA live stream discussions, it’s likely that we’ll see fighters like Cinder, T.J Combo, Riptor and Tusk. After all, developers did share their plans for the aforementioned characters if they were ever to be included to the game in the near future.

It’s certain, however, that Aria, the leader of UltraTech, will be included as one of the eight characters, seeing how she will serve as the boss for Season Two’s story mode and will be playable, as we reported earlier.

Also, it looks like Iron Galaxy will be adding the ‘No Mercy’ and ‘Ultimates’ features from the first two titles, but they won’t be previewed before E3.

Additionally, Killer Instinct fans can also get their hands on the recently released classic costume for Spinal.

Which eight Killer Instinct characters would you want to see in Season Two?

343 Industries Teases Internal Halo Xbox One Tournament

Because they love to tease, the team at 343 Industries almost – almost – gives you a glimpse of Halo on Xbox One.

Studio head Bonnie Ross tweeted the image in question earlier today, depicting studio members participating in the “Gold tier finals” of an internal Halo tournament. While not directly implied that it is indeed Halo Xbox One being played, two findings give it away: The white “Home” button on the Xbox One controller – a signature characteristic of the controller – held by a participant in the front row, and the Polk 4 Shot gaming headsets – designed specifically for the Xbox One – on the heads of all competitors.

“Gold tier finals at internal #343i tournament. Great playing, great game!”

BliVsjuCAAAPGRZSo close! If only the cameraman or camerawomen panned a little more to the right.

Alas. We’ll learn more about 343i’s “great plan” at E3 this June.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Find Out What Extinction’s Teeth Currency Is All About

In Call of Duty: Ghosts‘ alien-survival mode, Extinction, developer Infinity Ward is now letting players upgrade their Armory using special “Teeth” currency, obtainable in all episodes.

The new mechanic allows players to permanently upgrade abilities that they can then carry with them into any Extinction match. Infinity Ward explains how to actually earn Teeth in the studio’s latest blog entry:

  • Completing a map (+1)
  • Completing a map with a Relic (+1, whether you have one or all five active)
  • Completing with a player that has never completed a map before (+1)
  • Completing a map in Hardcore Mode (+1)
  • Take out 600 Cryptids (+1)
  • Obtaining Ranks 2, 6, 11, and 21 (+1 for each, only counted the first time that Rank is achieved)
  • Reaching a new Extinction prestige level (+1, plus another for each prestige level you have obtained prior to this update)

Teeth can also be acquired in a Bonus Pool that offers up to three per week by destroying a Barrier Hive in any episode.

Extinction players may have noticed new class abilities since the launch of Episode 2: Mayday in Ghosts’ Devastation DLC. Each can be enhanced using in-game Skill Points. Here are the details on the new upgrades:

  • Engineer Upgrade – The Engineer lays down a stasis field that Cryptids cannot enter.
  • Tank Upgrade – Force Cryptids to momentarily attack the Tank, who is now invulnerable and able to stun enemies with melee attacks.
  • Weapon Specialist Upgrade – Experience an adrenaline rush, greatly increasing damage inflicted while keeping your bullet weapon clips completely topped off. Nearby allies also receive a modest damage boost.
  • Medic Upgrade – The Medic is surrounded by a therapeutic energy field. Allies inside the field are instantly healed or revived from last stand.

Lastly, the studio recently added Chaos Mode to Extinction, a frenetic new game type that has players earning the highest score possible while facing endless waves of Aliens. As of this writing, the update is live on the PC, but we expect it to hit other platforms soon.

Keep your sights on MP1st for more details.

SOE President Gives a No BS Answer To H1Z1 and DayZ Similarities

Following up on yesterday’s live stream of SOE’s upcoming, free-to-play “hardcore survival game”, H1Z1, president John Smedly gave up a few more details, answering a number of frequently asked questions.

Without giving a “politically correct dodgy b.s. answer”, Smedly even went into some of the differentiating factors between SOE’s game, and Bohemia Interactive’s popular zombie survival game, DayZ. The similarities are clearly there, and thus comparisons are bound to be made. Here’s how he handled it on Reddit:

We will have first and third person?

“Third person will not give you LOS over obstacles. We intend to make it more of a preference. I find myself switching to it occasionally but I love combat in first person. To those who say we can’t serve two masters – play the game before you judge.”

Vehicles will be in third person only? Could this change?

“Maybe but that’s what we’re putting in for now.”

Why was there so much stuff around 15 years later

“We wanted to show you how the mechanics worked. Simple as that. We intend to make surviving a lot about catching your food. Longer term about growing it and protecting it.”

How is this different from Day Z?

“Saw this a lot. Not going to give some politically correct dodgy b.s. answer. It is a survival in a Zombie Apocalypse game. So is Day Z. They have made a brilliant game (first I might add). They have a great vision for it and can count myself and most of the people on our team as fans and contributors.”

He also added that, in the long run, the studio plans on “making this about a persistent world with a big landscape with thousands of players.”

“The way we would like to see this roll out is much more like players building small enclaves or pockets of territory and hold out against a legitimate zombie threat that’s ever present while others go it alone taking their chances” Smeldy wrote. “These player built structures, forts and towns are one of the ways the players try to carve out some small space in a dangerous world.”

He explained that H1Z1 would feature a deep in-game economy heavily dependant on crafted items. “Players will be able to become manufacturers.. sell bullets, arrows.. etc. The in-game economy will be entirely player driven.”

Early access to H1Z1 is launching next month for $19.99 and will launch as a free-to-play title on the PC and PlayStation 4 at an unannounced date.

Thanks, Vex_Vehix, for the tip!

Destiny On ‘Final Approach’ to Beta, News and ‘Shiny New Assets’ Incoming

Destiny developer Bungie is on its “final approach” to get its expansive shared-world shooter through Alpha, into Beta, and into the hands of anxious gamers later this Summer.

“We are hurtling towards September 9th. We are on final approach,” writes community manager Eric “Urk” Osborne in this week’s Bungie update. “For you, that means the floodgates are about to burst wide open.”

In this case, Osborne is referring to an incoming influx of fresh new Destiny news, as members of the press were recently invited to get some hands-on time with the game at Bungie’s studios. The news, along with loads of “shiny new assets”, will “mark the beginning of your true introduction into the world of Destiny,” Osbourne writes.

“Pre-Alpha itself is just a beginning,” he continues, looking back on Bungie’s most recent work. “It leads us into Alpha proper, and you into Beta, but it’s already keeping us up late into the night. Though we’re bleary-eyed and exhausted with the day-to-day challenge of keeping Destiny ON TRACK, the tiny sampling offered by our Pre-Alpha is already hugely motivating.”

Destiny’s Beta is coming first to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 users this Summer, later opening up to Xbox One and Xbox 360 users. The game officially launches September 9 on all four platforms.

No Titanfall on PlayStation 4 Due To Unknown Specs, Xbox ‘Saved the Project’

New details have surfaced that shine more light on Respawn Entertainment’s decision to skip out on developing their debut shooter, Titanfall, for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and even PlayStation Vita.

Geoff Keighley’s behind-the-scenes look at Titanfall’s production in The Final Hours of Titanfall leads to the conclusion that the decision really came down to timing. Sony wasn’t quite ready to divulge any details on the PlayStation 4, but it was willing to offer what the studio needed to produce a handheld version of the shooter on the PlayStation Vita.

“I can’t emphasize enough,” programmer John Shiring said over dinner with a Sony representative. “Decisions are being made here about our game, and we really need to know about the next PlayStation.”

In the end, things didn’t quite work out with Sony. However, Microsoft was able to share specs of what was then called “Project Durango”, which lead to a “top secret briefing from Microsoft in late January….”

“The deal was a complicated one as Respawn wasn’t dealing directly with Xbox,” Keighley wrote. “Instead, terms were negotiated through EA, which signed a larger, overarching partnership deal with Microsoft for the Xbox One. In order to make the economics work and keep Titanfall alive, EA needed a first-party publisher to invest. Xbox was willing to step up and save the project, which turned out to be a wise bet. Xbox now has one of the biggest games of the year as an exclusive to its platforms, although it lays no claim to sequels.”

Titanfall went on to become the best selling title last month across all platforms.

With both consoles out on the market for some time now, perhaps we’ll more than likely see Titanfall 2 on Sony’s platforms as well.

Also from The Final Hours of Titanfall, you can check out what the game looked like pre-Alpha, as it was first shown to EA during a GPMM demo.

Titanfall is set to receive additional content this May on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC in the Expedition DLC pack.

Thanks, Polygon.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare Zomboss Down DLC Review

Following up on last month’s impressive DLC offerings, what could PopCap HD do to top their previous work and keep Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare wacky and interesting?

Two words: Zomboss Down — a massive Wild Wild West-themed content pack.

The free add-on features tons of content ranging from new Western-inspired character variants like the Bandit Cactus and Law Peashooter. It also offers unique weapons for each class, such as the Bandit Cactus’ gatling gun that lets it engage in close-quarter combat, and the Armored Chomper which gives the Chomper the highest amount of health in the whole game. At 225 hit points, it can take much more enemy fire when it’s busy chomping on Zombies.

r3aOf18

A look at the new variants

Zomboss Down offers 200 new customization options that let you mix and match items with your favorite class, giving them even sillier new looks.

Cactus Canyon is a fantastic addition to Garden Warfare’s map roster. The final objective in Gardens and Graveyards has the Zombies trying to push a giant golf ball into the 18th hole. On paper, it sounds tacky, much like the premises of the rest of the game. But PopCap HD really pulls it off. It’s one of the most creative gameplay moments I’ve experienced yet and is the most fun I’ve had with the game so far.

PvZ

Both teams fighting it out over the 18th hole in Cactus Canyon

In addition to the new DLC, the latest patch addresses multiple concerns, something that the community will surely enjoy. Primarily, in Gardens And Graveyards, Plants tend to get the short end of the deal in terms of amount of coins earned per game. Thankfully, that is no more, as now Plants earn just as much as Zombies every game. No more need to desperately try to switch over to the Zombies team to snag a larger some sum coins. The update makes the game fun and fair, regardless of what team you are on.

Garden Warfare’s Zomboss Down DLC is nothing short of amazing. My only gripe with it is that, aside from some of the new character variants not being much better than the ones found in the game currently, you’ll be spending tons of Zomboss coins trying to unlock everything that this DLC has to offer. At the moment of this writing, I’ve spent close to 1 million Zomboss coins with a good chunk of the new content still left to unlock via sticker packs. I can be a bit of a grind trying to unlock everything.

5 / 5

At first glance the feature list for Zomboss Down sounds too be good to be true for a free add-on. It’s no April Fools joke, however. I tried throwing wads of cash at the TV screen, but it just didn’t take my money. Zomboss Down is that good.

If Zomboss Down is any indication of what’s in store for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, then this game has a very bright future ahead it. PopCap HD has definitely listened to the wants and needs of the community and went out of its way to deliver more than what was expected from a free add-on. Zomboss Down receives a perfect rating of 5/5 and turns Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare into a must-buy for those who were on the fence on it.

You can catch my Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare review here, as well as my thoughts on Garden Warfare’s previous DLC, Garden Variety, right here.

New Update Hits Call of Duty: Ghosts on PC, Adds “Chaos Mode” to Extinction

A new Call of Duty: Ghosts update is now available for the PC version of the game.

As of this writing, patch notes are not yet available, but reports are coming in the the update adds a new “Chaos Mode” to Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction.

Chaos Mode was previously introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as a frenetic Spec Ops variant that pit players against never ending waves of enemies. Chaining kills together granted power ups as players attempted to achieve the highest score possible.

The mode is similar in Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction, except players are attacked by alien creatures instead of AI-controlled humans. We’ll have more details as soon as patch notes become available.

Meanwhile, here’s a look at the new mode in action:

Titanfall Tops Call of Duty: Ghosts in March Software Sales

Despite not being able to push Microsoft’s Xbox One to the top spot in hardware sales for the month of March, the launch of Respawn Entertainment’s anticipated shooter, Titanfall, did rack in some impressive numbers.

According to NPD, Titanfall was the number one selling title in March, across all platforms, beating out Sucker Punch’s inFamous: Second Son at second place, Ubisoft’s South Park: The Stick of Truth at third, and Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts at fourth, surprisingly.

It should be noted that Titanfall’s placing and sales numbers do not include copies that were bundled with the Xbox One console.

Interestingly, NPD also reported a 28% drop in software sales across all platforms in the month of March, totalling to $432 million.

Here are the top ten placings for March, 2014:

  1. Titanfall \\ Xbox One, PC
  2. Infamous Second Son \\ PS4
  3. South Park: The Stick Of Truth \\ PS3, Xbox 360, PC
  4. Call Of Duty: Ghosts \\ PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, PC
  5. Dark Souls II  \\ PS3, Xbox 360

PlayStation 4 Tops Hardware Sales in March Despite Titanfall Launch

March was ‘supposed’ to be Titanfall month as Microsoft hoped to see a significant boost in Xbox One sales with the launch of Respawn Entertainment’s highly anticipated shooter.

While it certainly helped Microsoft move more units, Titanfall’s launch was seemingly no match for Sony and the draw of the PlayStation 4.

According to NPD, hardware sales soared 78% in the month of March, totalling $395 million, lead for the third month in a row by Sony’s PlayStation 4.

“PS4 and Xbox One continue to see success with cumulative sales of the two consoles through the first five months currently totaling more than double that of their predecessors, the PS3 and Xbox 360,” noted NPD analyst Liam Callahan.

Sony announced yesterday that the company had sold 7 million units globally to-date.
