Watch Dogs Multiplayer Trailer Was PS4 Footage, Controller Layout Revealed

Remember that sweet Watch Dogs multiplayer developer commentary from yesterday? This one?

Creative director Jonathan Morin now tells us that it was indeed running on a PlayStation 4 devkit, for those curious. “For everyone asking for the online video of #WatchDogs – Yes it was captured on a PS4 devkit (same pipeline as the others),” he wrote on Twitter earlier last night.

In a seemingly generous mood, Morin also outed the PlayStation 4’s controller layout that Watch Dogs adopts by default. It includes both character and vehicle controls. Check it out here:

Xbox One Gears of War – Black Tusk Seeking “Best in Class Visuals” and “Bleeding Edge Rendering Techniques”

Vancouver-based studio Black Tusk is getting the gears turning when it comes to development on the Xbox-exclusive Gears of War series, soon to make its long-awaited return on the Xbox One.

Recent job listings have appeared on Microsoft’s website, hinting at the sort of work the studio is heads-down in. While many of the postings are littered with your standard marketing pitches, there are a few words and phrases that definitely have our interest.

In the first point of interest, Black Tusk’s Senior Marketing Engineer position is looking for candidates to work with “bleeding edge new rendering techniques to deliver best in class visuals for an AAA Console game.” Responsibilities also include developing and optimizing “industry leading high performance real time graphics features and effects,” while driving “major new features”.

Interestingly, the position is noted to require “Strong debugging and optimization skills in a multi-threaded environment” a major feature of Microsoft’s DirectX 12 API.

In addition, a requirement for Black Tusk’s Art Director opening looks for comfort in “working with a broad spectrum of styles, from photo-realistic to highly stylized” across Environments, Characters, Cinematics, Concept Art, Lighting, Animation, FX and UI. Black Tusk also seeks a Lead Multiplayer Level Designer to create an “industry-leading multiplayer experience” and who is familiar with “Gears of War gameplay and past Gears of War multiplayer map designs”.

Senior Online Services Engineer opening mentions “owning a reliable high-traffic services to support console and multi-screen end points”, indicating that support for something like Xbox’s SmartGlass is highly likely. The position also requires experience with Azure, signifying that Microsoft’s cloud service will likely be utilized to some capacity. Similarly, a Lead Online Services Engineer opening seeks candidates who will be responsible for building “next generation of backend services to power the Gears of War Universe, on console, web and mobile.” Clearly, Black Tusk hopes to extend the Gears of War experience beyond the Xbox One.

Still, there are a lot of unknowns as Black Tusk has yet to announce any specifics regarding their upcoming project. It’s likely, however, that we’ll hear something at this year’s E3.

Earlier, we learned that the studio was toying with “awesome” and “innovative” concepts for Gears of War on Xbox One.

Excited to learn more about the future of Gears?

Thanks, DualShockers.

Learn About The Elder Scrolls Online’s 12-Player Veteran PvE “Trials”

Trials are coming to The Elder Scrolls Online with the introduction of the new “Craglorn” Adventure Zone.

Essentially, Trials are 12-player, Veteran PvE boss raids that will take experienced groups an hour to an hour and a half to complete. Each Trial is a high-difficulty encounter that requires careful planning, strategizing, and mastery of combat skills. The kicker? Groups tackling any given Trial will only have a limited number of resurrections available. But those who do withstand the weekly challenge – with one of the top times across the megaserver- will gain additional awards.

Trials also feature the most complex and difficult encounters we’ve designed so far,” writes developer Zenimax in a recent blog update. “They demand skill, adaptability, and coordination from every member of the group. We know you’ll be challenged by them, but we faced some hurdles to overcome while developing them, too.”

Follow the link above to learn more about the development process behind ESO’s Trials, and to learn more about what’s to come with the new Craglorn Adventure Zone. We’ve also got two trailers – one above and one below – showing off the new content coming to ESO.

The Elder Scrolls Online is now out on PC and Mac, coming later to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in June.

BF4 Servers Undergo Hardware Improvements to Fix Lag and “Rubber-Banding” Issues

Battlefield 4 developer DICE has noted a recent upgrade to the game’s server infrastructure in an effort to reduce or eliminate the considerable lag a number of users have been experiencing on servers with high player counts.

Lag – or “rubber-banding”, as the Battlefield community likes to call it – has gained significant notoriety since the launch of Battlefield 4’s Naval Strike DLC. Battlefield 4 community manager Dan Mitre has since issued a statement, noting that the team is “unhappy with [Battlefield 4’s] server performance” and will “be upgrading the hardware as soon as possible, investing more to deliver a better experience.”

A planned maintenance over the course of last night aimed to implement these upgrades, despite not being detailed the most recent R32 Server Update changelog.

According to DICE developer who goes by the name “TheBikingViking” on Reddit, hardware improvements are in effect as of last night and players should, hopefully, be noticing a difference.

“Server hardware upgrades are technically not part of a software changelog. The server hardware upgrades would explain why the rubberbanding issues are reported as mostly gone,” he wrote in response to a posting on Reddit.

“As I understand it, yes, the hardware improvements have been done today. Would love to hear some feedback on it,” he wrote in another.

As a bit of a side note, it turns out that a client-side PC patch was, in fact, not planned to take place over night, as was initially reported. “There was never any client update planned for today, only a server update,” TheBikingViking wrote. “I don’t know where that information came from.” It should be noted that the original announcement came from server providers, and not DICE. Looks like we can chalk this one off as a case of misinformation.

Let us know in the comments, are you noticing any performance improvements on higher player count servers?

Xbox “Bringing More Than Hype, Bringing Games” To E3, Says Phil Spencer

While the newest head at the Xbox division of Microsoft, Phil Spencer, is hard at work refocusing the Xbox One into a gamer-centric console, he still tends to keep a social presence when necessary.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Phil said that they are looking “to make the show great” this year at E3, adding that Microsoft is “bringing more than hype, bringing games”.

Microsoft’s next-gen console seems to have come under considerable criticism for its focus on being the ‘all-in-one entertainment machine’, rather than focusing on what gamers want: games. So it’s great to see this potential shift in focus that will hopefully be highlighted in full at this year’s E3.

Games that we could be seeing at E3 include Quantum Break, Dying Light, Halo, The Division, and more. Are you happy that Microsoft is turning the direction around to focus on gamers?

Thanks, Examiner.

Battlefield 4 PC and Server Patch Incoming Tomorrow

Battlefield 4‘s servers are getting a bit of an update tomorrow in preparation for an incoming client-side PC patch.

Server update “R32” will be deployed at 08.00 UTC on April 23rd, according to statements issued by server providers. The update is mandatory, and is required for a client update that will be released at the same time on the PC.

No specifics were mentioned, but we’ll surely be getting our hands on some patch notes at some point tomorrow.

Last we heard, developer DICE was ‘unhappy with server performance’ and the “rubber-banding” issues that a number of users have been experiencing recently.

“Looking into this further, we’re unhappy with our server performance, so we’ll be upgrading the hardware as soon as possible, investing more to deliver a better experience,” said Battlefield 4 community manager Dan Mitre earlier. It’s not guaranteed that these upgrades will be reflected in tomorrow’ updates, but it does seem rather likely.

Keep your sights on MP1st tomorrow for more updates!

Earlier, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg insisted that the studio would be taking a “next-gen-first” approach, focusing development on platforms like the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

H1Z1 Microtransactions Won’t Consist of Weapons, Ammo, Food, or Other Survival Essentials

During a company meeting lead by SOE President John Smeadley, the studio discussed some of the potential monetization options for their upcoming free-to-play title, H1Z1.

In his recent post, he detailed what was discussed, and it seems that, for now, most of the microtransactions in the game will be for cosmetic items.

“Some of our outcomes. Please note I’ll do a comprehensive posting after we’re done with this. We have another meeting Thursday to discuss.

  1. “We will be selling wearables. We felt like this will be a good, fair revenue generator. However – we recognize how important finding wearables in the world is so you’ll be able to find and craft a lot of stuff. We agree that’s something important. We’ve also come up with a pretty awesome idea to let players who kill other players loot stuff. So if a player has a black ski mask and gets killed by another player, that player can wear the ski mask for a few deaths (we have durability in the game. Station Cash wearables won’t degrade at all but when you loot something.. it will degrade. Please note the original player always keeps their SC purchased wearables. This gives the great feeling of whacking some unsuspecting fool who decided to bring a knife to a gun fight. Also – you will be perfectly able to get ghille suits in game cheaply either by crafting or finding them. We won’t sell those. Please note – you still lose everything if you die. If you bought a Station Cash item it will be in a global inventory that is basically anything you bought for real money. We don’t like the idea of a stash you can readily access in a survival game. So yeah, it’s hard. Deal or don’t play.
  2. “We will NOT be selling Guns, Ammo, Food, Water… i.e. That’s kind of the whole game and it would suck in our opinion if we did that.
  3. “Nor will we sell boosts that will impact #2.
  4. “Emote Pack – of course we’ll have the basics for free. But we felt like this is another good and fair revenue generator.
  5. “Character slots – feels reasonable.

Smedly added, “That Monetization thread has turned out to be a terrific source of ideas and it also is helping us steer clear of the stuff you just don’t want to see,” and that there is “More to come late this week,” during another meeting.

Fortunately, it seems that they truly are aiming for a free-to-play model that isn’t loaded with purchase items that players can get an advantage with.

H1Z1 is set to get early access in the coming months for the PC version with a full release not yet dated. The PS4 version will soon follow after it’s full release.

New Call of Duty: Ghosts Update Adds Chaos Mode to Extinction On Other Platforms

Last week’s Call of Duty: Ghosts PC update that introduced the new Chaos Mode to Extinction is now rolling out on other platforms.

The update also adds new Casual Extinction and Hardcore Extinction options, as seen below.

Screen Shot 2014-04-22 at 9.21.27 AM

For those who don’t remember Chaos Mode was originally introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as a frenetic Spec Ops variant pitting players against never ending waves of enemies. It tasked players with getting the highest score possible while chaining kills together to unlock small in-game power ups.

As of this writing, we’re seeing the new update live on Xbox Platforms, but have yet to see it arrive on PlayStation. The mode was added to the PC version of the game last week. Stay tuned more details about the update as they become available.
