DICE Testing Possible Battlefield 4 “Netcode” Fixes

According to DICE’s lead scripter on Battlefield 4, the studio in the midst of testing out possible ‘fixes’ for the game’s infamous “netcode” troubles.

Though DICE has been hard at work patching up Battlefield 4 and smoothing out some bugs and balancing issues, connection issues like ‘getting shot behind corners’, ‘instant-deaths’, and other inexplainable occurrences related to networking are beginning to frustrate a number of Battlefield users. Trips to various internet forums related to the game make that fairly evident.

That said, you can take comfort knowing that members of the studio are actively seeking out solutions, as is the case with DICE lead scripter, Mikael Hedberg.

As he points out on Twitter, the studio is currently running a few tests “for a possible ‘netcode’ fix” by asking users to join a specific test server.

According to Tweets, DICE is looking to better understand ‘how the server & network perform’ with regards to these issues.

We’ll be on the lookout for any official news related to the test’s outcome, should DICE make any announcements.

Naughty Dog – A The Last of Us Sequel is “50/50”, Working on Final Multiplayer DLC and ‘Maybe Someting Else’

Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann and Bruce Stanley held a Reddit AMA a few days ago, revealing some details on development of The Last of Us and the possibility of a sequel.

While we know the team is working on the final multiplayer DLC for The Last of Us, the guys did hint that the team may be working on additional content as well, or is at least teasing something concerning The Last of Us.

“We’re working on the 3rd DLC drop for MP right now! …and maybe something else… we’ll see,” said Stanley.

While many are hoping for a sequel to The Last of Us, including us, Neil responded to these questions stating that the chances of a sequel happening is “50/50”. He went on to explain that Sony has given them complete trust in their decisions for what projects they will be working on.

“If you’re asking about a sequel… right now I’d say it’s 50/50…..Sony has complete trust in us,” Said Druckmann. “It’s really up to us to come up with something that will keep the team inspired for the next several years — which is why we don’t take the decision of what we’ll work on next lightly.”

The team also discussed their thoughts on the PlayStation 4’s memory, and while they haven’t had much time with it, they are very excited to start utilizing it to it’s full potential, like on the layStation 3.

“Dunno really – the DLC is on the PS3, so we haven’t gotten a whole lot of time with the ‘next-next gen’ hardware,” Stanley added. “But I’m excited about having more memory, until we use it all up again!”

If you are interested, Sony also released a Making of Video for the Last of Us, which is a little over an hour long. You can watch it below. It’s rather interesting to see the work that went into the development and acting for the game.

We suggest you read the full AMA at the official Reddit posting. It’s a great read.

Battlefield 4 Platoons Incoming ‘Very Soon’ – Sign Up For Early Access

Platoons are coming back to Battlefield 4 “very soon”, says DICE developer “TheBikingViking”.

First introduced and featured in 2011’s Battlefield 3, Platoons acted as a way to party up with like-minded players and engage in small tournaments or competitions with other Platoons. It may not have been a part of Battlefield 4’s launch, but it’s coming back.

“Very soon, we will release Platoons on Battlelog for Battlefield 4 (details to be announced very soon), but we want to give early access to a smaller group of players to test certain parts of the system before a full rollout and get some even earlier feedback,” writes TheBikingViking on the Battlelog.

Details on exactly how to sign up for early access can be found through that link above.

And, by the way, don’t even think about challenging the MP1st Platoon, because we’ll, like, so totally beat you. So, yeah.

Excited for the return of Platoons?

The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer – What We Want

We loved The Last of Us’ multiplayer. So much so, it earned third place in our top list of 2013 multiplayer experiences.

While Naughty Dog is already crafting some ideas for a potential sequel to their highly acclaimed PlayStation-exclusive, we’ve decided to create our own short-list of some of our ideas for the game’s would-be multiplayer. Here are five things that we think would make The Last of Us’ multiplayer even better:

3299_Fireflies-TLOU-MP

1. Better Character Customization

We really were limited to what our characters looked like in The Last of Us’ multiplayer. We could pick a hat, a face mask, and an emblem. Otherwise, whether they were male or female, what race they were, or how their face was structured was all done randomly every match. We would love to have control over how our character will look like, just like in Uncharted. We would also love to see separate faction unlocks, as I’ve never liked the idea of having to select which faction I can play as, only to have the exact same cosmetic unlocks be the same as the other one. It basically meant there wasn’t really a point to selecting which faction to play as.

2. Introduce a Third Faction: The Military.

And introduce specific game modes that revolve around the three factions. I’m actually surprised that this wasn’t in the first game. The Military is, after all, the Fireflies’ biggest rival. It would be neat if there were game modes revolving around the faction you are as well. Sure, bring on three-way team death match, I suppose, but give us unique PvP games modes with elements of co-op. I’d love to see something similar to what Killzone 3 did: Operations – set objectives, cut-scenes for progression, ect.

3. Co-op Horde Mode With Objectives

The thing about most games that include some sort of co-op horde mode that bugs me is their lack of objectives. In reality, it should be more along the lines of traditional co-op, similar to that in the Uncharted games. Imaging being faced against waves of infected and human AI, all while having different objectives to complete. Who did this rather well was BioWare with Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer. It might have been a simple traditional horde-mode, but every round was only won by completing a specific, randomized objective. On top of that, a full match was only completed through successful extraction. I’d love to see something similar adopted for The Last of Us 2’s multiplayer, as Mass Effect 3’s horde-mode multiplayer was one of the better ones out there.

3297_Elim2-One-life-per-round-TLOU-MP

4. Infected and Clickers in PvP Battle

The current multiplayer in The Last of Us is absolutely great when it comes to capturing that “survival” feeling. Every moment could potentially be the last as danger lurks around practically every turn. However, to increase the intensity and suspense, why not introduce iconic infected monsters like the Clickers?

Now, imagine a match going as it usually goes in a round of Supply Raid. Your team is at a stalemate with the enemy. Every entry/exit is covered. One small movement could potentially mean death for anyone. That’s when things get a bit more interesting as you hear sounds of footsteps followed by an eerie clicking noise from behind. You use listen mode to see what’s going on, only for it to reveal a hoard of infected and clickers making their way towards the field. This would allow for more dynamic gameplay, as not only will you have to fend for your life against other human controller players, but you’ll also have to face off against highly powerful, senseless killing machines. You might say that ammo, armor, and basically anything you have will be wasted, leaving you vulnerable to enemies. But if you play it smart, you could potentially lead the infected towards the enemy by throwing bottles and bricks, creating a possible opportunity to strike, or cause the opposition to waste resources.

5. More Dynamic Maps, But With Deadly Effects

I find it odd that there weren’t a whole lot of these in The Last of Us’ multiplayer. From what I can recall, only Lakeside (where a snow storm rolls in) and Suburb (where a dust storm rolls in) featured some sort of dynamic effect. We would love to see more of these, and in fact, we would love to see some that can actually be harmful or even lethal. Think of a map with rooms that are filled with dead infected and spores pouring out of them. How great would it be if, suddenly, mid-game, buildings fans decide to kick in causing all the spores to be spread throughout the building? In turn, it would require players to equip a gas mask or risk the consequences. In The Last of Us’ single player, the spores didn’t do a whole lot besides infect you, which is a long process. But putting that aside, Naughty Dog could simply program spores to lower your health and introduce body degradation if someone shoots off your gas mask. Either way, we would love to see more maps with dynamic features outside of just cosmetics.

3303_molotov-throw-TLOU-mp

Those are just some of the ideas we came up with that we’d love to see in The Last of Us 2’s multiplayer, which we’re sure hoping actually happens.

If you have any more to add, we would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below!

COD: Ghosts Pacific Diamond Division Clan War Cancelled Due To Technical Difficulties

Beachhead Studio, head of Call of Duty: Ghosts‘ Clan War division and creators of the official Call of Duty App, are cancelling today’s Pacific Diamond Division Clan war while they attempt to push through unforeseen technical difficulties.

The issues appear to be affecting a majority of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners, according to the Call of Duty: Ghosts sub-reddit where users are reporting they are unable to access servers. Meanwhile, many official forum user have reported troubles accessing the official Call of Duty App.

Beachhead says they will “evaluate” the situation before moving forward.

Issues began earlier Sunday night when reports of bugged clan emblems began surfacing. Sadly, it appears Beachhead was unable to resolve the situation. Stay tuned for more info.

UPDATE: Beachhead Studio has outlined the following steps that will be taken to properly award Diamond Division entitlements:

  • Thanks to those of you who participated in the first Diamond Division Clan War. We appreciate your enthusiasm and patience.
  • There was an issue today that prevented PS3 & PS4 members from contributing to the Diamond Division Clan War for some time.
  • We are committed to fair play and have developed what we believe is a reasonable and equitable plan for awarding DD entitlements.
  • East Coast DD war: we will be recreating the Clan War at the time the issue occurred.
  • East Coast DD war: We will compare each Clan’s standing at that point in time with the final outcome of the Clan War. East Coast clans will receive credit for the better of the two standings between the final outcome and the recreation.
  • All DD participants who placed 4th or above will receive credit for Body Count gear for this Clan War only.
  • Diamond points for the leaderboard will be based on your actual standing in the war including the East Coast provisions

“Halo 5″ Still Not Confirmed, Xbox Magazine March Issue Scans Surface

Despite headlines on March 2014’s issue of Xbox, The Official Magazine, “Halo 5” remains unconfirmed.

image_38752_full

As revealed via these scans of the issue found on Reddit, the magazine admits to the stretch, writing that the game’s dev team insists on referring to it as “Halo for Xbox One,” not Halo 5. The writing also points to a rumor suggesting the launch of a Halo 5 beta this year, though no source was given.

343 Industries is undoubtedly on track to launch a new title in the Halo universe this year, as the game’s senior PR manager confirmed last month. But aside from this piece of concept art coming directly from the studio and the game’s initial teaser trailer, we have little to go by with regards to the game’s ambiguous title.

More recent rumors suggest a “Halo 2 Anniversary”, when Master Chief voice actor said what gamers can “look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2”.

For more on Halo for Xbox One, keep your sights on MP1st.

Titanfall Beta Amasses ‘Two Million Unique Users’

Two and a half weeks away from Respawn Entertainment’s launch of their brand new IP, Titanfall, what did the studio learn from last week’s Xbox One and PC beta?

Well, for one thing, a lot of people enjoyed it. “We had around two million unique users playing during the beta,” said community manager Abbie Heppe, speaking to Polygon.

When it comes to changes the studio will be making based on the beta’s results, Heppe said the team is “still looking for tweaks to certain weapons or other things. The designers spent a lot of time watching videos and streams of people playing to try and look and see how they were abusing things or not understanding things.”

Fans shouldn’t expect any drastic alterations from the core gameplay that was experienced in the beta, however. “As far as large scale changes, like ‘let’s just get rid of the AI,’ those aren’t things that we’re going to be doing,” added Heppe. “They’re an integral part of what Titanfall is, what makes this game.”

Over on the tech side of things, the engineer in charge of Titanfall’s launch, Jon ‘Slothy’ Shiring, said, “People need to understand that when you write a whole bunch of new code, there’s bugs in it. We have to find those bugs. That was the goal of the beta. We know it’s not going to work right. We don’t want to find out on launch day. Let’s find out now. We found probably 10 real things that we worked on and fixed. That’s 10 things we don’t have to find on launch day. We still might find some new things on launch day, but at least those ones are not there anymore.”

“We went into this knowing, here are potential things that might be broken,” Shiring added. “A lot of it is to look and see what people are doing and complaining about, to see which of those hunches were right.

“We’re not completely ignorant of what might be a problem in the game, but we don’t want to nerf everything just in case. A lot of it is, the way we’re doing certain things, is that going to be a problem when it’s a lot of people, or is it only a problem when it’s a few people playing? So a lot of it is us checking our own data.”

With more insight on the inner workings of the recently passed beta and the game’s upcoming launch, where do your hopes for Titanfall lie?

Titanfall launches on the Xbox One and PC March 11, and on the Xbox 360 March 25.
