Next Halo to be Announced at E3 2014, 343 Industries Has a “Great Plan In Place”

We now know five things about the next Halo game: 343 Industries is making it, it’s on the Xbox One, it’s 60 frames per second, it’s 1080p, and it’s probably going to actually get an official name at this year’s E3 convention.

Thus far, Microsoft has kept rather tight-lipped about the next Halo’s official title, leaving us only rumors to work with, the latest being a hint from Master Chief voice actor Steve Downes that Halo 2 Anniversary is coming later this year.

Temporarily satisfying the itch of anxious fans, Microsoft Studio boss Phil Spencer confirmed on Twitter earlier today that official “Halo news” would be announced at E3 2014, adding that developer 343 Industries has “a great plan in place…”

E3 is only just under four months away, so hopefully you can hang on just a little more. Keep your sights on MP1st for more on Halo.

Battlefield 4 Naval Strike Officially Confirmed for ‘Late March’

Developer DICE narrows down Battlefield 4’s third DLC launch.

According to Battlefield 4 Naval Strike’s official page, the multiplayer expansion will launch for Premium members “late March”.

Screen Shot 2014-02-27 at 10.11.15 PM

Recent rumors put the DLC at a March 18 launch when Origin Denmark listed the date prematurely, but it looks like DICE isn’t quite ready to finalize any specific release dates just yet. So, for now, late March it is.

Earlier this month, DICE announced Naval Strike’s initial details, stating that it would introduce four new maps; Lost Islands, Nansha Strike, Wave Breaker, and Operation Mortar, along with five all-new weapons, the hovercraft vehicle, two additional gadgets, and ten new assignments. Furthermore, Naval Strike would re-introduce the fan-favorite Battlefield 2142 game mode, Titan, as “Carrier Assault”.

Keep your sights on MP1st for more Battlefield 4 Naval Strike details.

Thanks, Mechcell, for the tip!

Final Fantasy XIV PS4 Beta Impressions – I’ll Take Some WoW With My FF Please

Initially launched in September 2010, Final Fantasy XIV was rife with bugs and glitches, awful UI, an inadequate amount of quests, and an economic system that made trading and crafting wares an absolute nightmare.

With the game universally panned by critics and gamers from all corners of the globe, Square Enix shut down servers in late 2012 in an attempt to rework the existing game into an enjoyable experience. This is how A Realm Reborn came to be and in August 2013, the game was relaunched. Addressing many of the critics concerns, FFXIV: A Realm Reborn received a much more favorable reception offering players an improved graphics engine, a new UI, public quests (or FATE), and the return of the Auction House (now known as the Market Board). Despite these additions and changes, the MMO landscape has changed drastically since FFXI and FFXIV launched with the F2P model now coming to rise. This begs the question: can A Realm Reborn, with a traditional monthly fee, rise to the top in a F2P era? Read on to find out.

Questing

The first sin A Realm Reborn had to repent for was the absolute dearth of questing found in the original FFXIV. A Realm Reborn has definitely made up for its past transgressions by offering players a ton of quests to partake in. Currently residing as a level 16 Lancer, I’ve done dozens of quests during my time in Eorzea. In this regard, A Realm Reborn bears more resemblance to the questing structure of World of Warcraft than it does with FFXI or FFXIV. This represents a fundamental shift for seasoned Final Fantasy MMO players since leveling typically involves partying with others and grinding, as opposed to completing quests. Despite offering a reprieve from the traditional grind, the quests often fall into the traditional MMO mold of “Retrieve ‘X’ Item” or “Kill ‘X’ amount of ‘Y’ enemies”. Any player who has played — or even seen an MMO be played — will get a heavy dose of déjà vu. As I progressed further into the game, more often than not I found myself mashing the X button and not reading a bit of dialog from my questgivers. In a genre that emphasizes escapism, its hard to be immersed when you realize almost every NPC is basically saying, ‘Long story short, if you kill a few of these things, I’ll reward you handsomely’.

A Realm Reborn does a few things to keep things fresh with the newly implemented FATE System. FATE — otherwise known as Full Active Time Event — is a term that essentially means public quests. These are quests that any player can partake in as long as they are in the highlighted area on the map at a given time. All players in the area are tasked with taking down an infinitely respawning group of enemies until the timer runs out or taking down a massive enemy who has a vast amount of health. Regardless of the FATE being completed, XP and rewards are doled out based upon participation. If you only fire one shot at the enemy during an entire FATE, your reward will be decidedly unimpressive. Participating in a FATE requires players to be within a certain level range in order to participate. If you leveled up too fast and missed out on killing the giant slug, fret not. A Realm Reborn allows players to temporarily lower their level if they wish to complete FATE’s they may have missed out on.

Final_Fantasy_XIV_FATE

This FATE tasks players with taking down all the Imps before they can escape the keep.

The remaining quest types are Leves, Guildhests, and Story. Leves are similar to FATE’s in that a player must be in a specified area to complete them, but they can only be completed solo with other players unable to provide assistance. Guildhests are similar to Leves, but require a party to complete. If you are not in a party before hand, A Realm Reborn will automatically party up players looking to complete the same Guildhest. Story quests usually feature cutscenes, and involve a player teleporting to a unique instance to complete the quest. The dialog for story quests are a bit more unique than your typical quest, but they tend to have some quirks I find a bit irksome. For one, voice acting is not featured in all cutscenes. There may be a moment where an important character has voice acting in one scene, but the next time you run into that character they may be relegated to text boxes. While I’ve never found the English voice acting to be a strong trait of the FF series (and this entry is no different), it would be nice if the game would pick one or the other. However, my main issue is the focus of the dialog being how important and unique your character is. Despite the fact there are thousands of other players reading the exact same thing and completing the exact same quests, A Realm Reborn reuses story themes seen in almost every fantasy MMO to date. For example: references to being the one (“Are you?…no…couldn’t be…”), but then eventually — SURPRISE — you are the one! Or, the repeated reminders that mundane tasks, such as retrieving eggs a stone throw away or picking flowers in an adjacent field, would not be possible without your assistance. All the more reason to just mash the X button during dialog, accept the quest, and be done with it.

Community

FFXI was a very community centric game mainly because any form of progression at later levels required a player to party up. While I hold out hope the community will be more vocal at some point, as it stands the chat box remains alarmingly quiet. Part of the issue is many players do not have a USB or Bluetooth keyboard in order to communicate easily. While the PlayStation 4’s on-screen keyboard is somewhat easy to use, it certainly isn’t as quick or as effective as using a physical keyboard. Even if PS4 players don’t embrace the chat box, I’m sure there will be plenty of experienced PC and PS3 players who will make use of it once the PS4 version launches.

What the community lacks in text communication, they certainly make up for with creative uses of emotes to depict acts that are sexual in nature.

Gameplay

A Realm Reborn makes good use of the PS4 controller and the hotbar system. Players can assign items, actions, emotes, abilities, spells, etc. to any position on the hotbar. Once assigned to a position, players can make use of the assigned space using a clever combination of triggers, the D-Pad, and the face buttons. Currently, because I’m a low enough level and I don’t have to juggle dozens of abilities, I have my non-combat abilities and items assigned to L2 + D-Pad / Face Buttons and all my combat pertinent abilities assigned to R2 + D-Pad / Face Buttons. Traditionally, players had to highlight the ability they wished to use on the hotbar using the D-Pad. It wasn’t the most intuitive layout when you begin talking about cycling through 4 hotbars and horizontally scrolling through 8 icons to cast a healing spell during the heat of battle. The L2+R2 system makes it easy for players to instantly cast the abilities and spells they need without needing multiple buttons presses.

Final_Fantasy_XIV_Armor

Such….intimidating armor…for a warrior…

In nearly every MMO I’ve played, there typically comes a point where you have to make a lengthy travel to complete a quest that just makes you groan at the thought of it. A Realm Reborn does a fantastic job of letting players spend more time on quests, in battles, and crafting than traveling. First off, there is sprint. Most MMO’s traditionally require a spell to be cast for temporary Sprint or a Bard to play a song to make players run faster. In A Realm Reborn, the sprint skill is available to all players starting from level 1 (protip: USE THIS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!). While sprint will drain your TP bar fully, sprint doesn’t require a full bar to be cast. This means 15 seconds after sprint wears off, you can sprint again. Sprint can be used to help you run away from an overpowering enemy, but I have found its greatest use in cutting down traveling time around town and from quest to quest. Then there’s the Aethernet system. Crystalline in appearance, these nodes serve as instant transportation around multiple area in a city. Want to finish off a quest at the Lancer’s Guild? Find a node, select Lancer’s Guild, and you’re there. Using the Aethernet typically shaves off no more than a couple minutes versus sprinting, but when you have multiple quests to retrieve rewards for, the time really starts to add up. If it’s areas outside of town you wish to access, players can make use of Chocobos or Teleportation (both at a nominal fee) by Level 10.

No crazy level requirement, no insane quests to get a Chocobo or Teleportation license, all you have to do is hit Level 10. I wish all MMO’s were that lenient.

Final_Fantasy_XIV_Chocobo

Fast travel, including Chocobos, will be available to players early on in their adventures.

The beta is currently available to all, and can be downloaded through the PSN Store here. While there are elements I certainly enjoy — in particular the combat system and the almost non-existent travel — I don’t think A Realm Reborn does enough to justify the $40 price tag + $12.99/month fee. It’s great to see a stronger emphasis on quests akin to World of Warcraft and a story driven approach, but for someone who has played his fair share of MMO’s, A Realm Reborn more often than not stumbles into all too familiar territory.

What do you guys make of the beta? Excited to pick it up when it launches on PS4 or not? Do you already own it? Let us know in the comments below.

Halo 4 Gets New Game Modes – Rumble Swords and Medal Madness, 343 Teases “Ninja Assassins”

This Monday, 343 Industries is spicing up Halo 4 with some brand new game modes via the latest matchmaking update.

Voted by the community last week, Rumble Swords will be added to the Rumble Pit playlist, giving players the option to brawl it out with nothing deadly Energy Swords.

Also tagging along is a brand new game mode the studio likes to call Medal Madness. Halo 4 multiplayer designer “TTL Laskan” describes it as “a 4 vs. 4 team game type where each side works to collect the most of a requisite medal in a one-minute time period, which we refer to as mini-rounds”.

“The team that collects the most of said medal will win the mini-round and earn a point. The first team to earn seven points (by winning mini-rounds) wins the match,” Laskan says, adding that each mini-round will shift player traits to better facilitate the earning of medals. For example, mini-rounds tasking you with getting Double Kills medals will adopt settings similar to that of SWAT.

Expect a “bunch of cool, and maybe I should say, unexpected mini-rounds in Medal Madness,” says Laskan. Check out the full list of medals that will be randomly generated in each mini-round of Medal Madness:

  • Double Kill
  • Snapshot
  • Assassination
  • Hail Mary
  • Spartan Laser
  • Melee
  • Supercombine
  • Rail Gun
  • Binary Rifle Kill
  • Sword / Hammer Kill
  • Rocket / Fuel Rod Kills

Interestingly, the studio notes a few mysterious new updates that are in the works for Halo 4’s competitive Team Throwdown playlist, including “a little something called Ninja Assassins,” hints Laskan. “Details on this one are still shrouded, in black, but we might be able to release more information in updates to come. Or the game type might appear from the shadows, decimate an entire village, throw down a smoke bomb and vanish.”

Heading over to Halo 4 this Monday to see what all the fuss is about?

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare Review – Shooter Fans, Don’t Be Fooled

Shooters are indeed getting weirder with the launch of PopCap Games’ Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare on the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Remember that old saying, ‘never judge a book by its cover’? This quote directly applies to Garden Warfare. It may look like a niche shooter that you should pass off due to its bright and colorful palette and unorthodox gameplay. But with this sort of mindset – brushing it off before playing it – you’ll miss out on, in my opinion, one of the most interesting and underrated games to come out this year. But how does one of the most popular tower-defense mobile games ever translate into a triple-A first-person shooter experience on both previous and next-gen hardware?

To simply put it, Garden Warfare, in a nutshell, is pretty much the love child of the Battlefield and Team Fortress series thanks to its surprisingly large map sizes and quirky, class-based, 24 player limit gameplay. That said, it manages to stay true to the series’ strategic roots while providing an all around new and unique breathe of fresh air in a time when the gaming industry is flooded with shooters that take themselves way too seriously. It takes us back to a time when shooters were more about having fun and weren’t so rage-inducing.

PvZ Sewershot

Underneath the bright and colorful visuals is an easy-to-pick-up but hard-to-master game that constantly rewards you, which will make it easy for your friends, family, and yourself to get in and play together, taking advantage of the game’s eight different classes. In this regard, PopCap Games did a fantastic job making sure each one was unique while staying true to the franchise and their abilities in the original games. Alongside the unique character classes, the game also boasts a progression system that allows you to unlock more items for your favorite class by completing some pretty simple tasks such as reviving your teammates or getting ‘x’ amount of kills with one of your skills.

First up: the protagonists of the series. The Plants consist of four classes who are the Cactus, Chomper, Pea Shooter and Sunflower, which translate into more familiar FPS archetypes like the Sniper, Melee, Infantry and Medic, respectively. On the Zombie side of things, you’ll find the All-Star, Engineer, Scientist, Soldier who serve as the Tank, Engineer, Medic and Soldier, respectively.

Much like its strategy game counterpart, Garden Warfare offers a great deal of ways to personally customize your favorite Plant or Zombie that not only changes the class aesthetically, but changes the way they play. Certain customizable characters will have different attacks in their arsenal. For instance, the frozen Pea Shooter can trade its primary attack for a weaker one, but one that’s capable of freezing Zombies in their path after a few successful hits. My personal favorite is the Marine Biologist Scientist who can trade in its trusty Zomboss Goo Blaster for the absurd Dolphin Cannon.

However, unlocking the different Plants and Zombies costumes requires you to put some time in the game. Earning character parts by purchasing sticker packs from the in-game store requires you to earn ‘x’ amount of coins to unlock them. Gathering five parts of a certain model will fully unlock that custom Plant paint or Zombie model. Or, you can patiently wait and unlock character parts with the most expensive sticker pack worth 40,000 coins. Thankfully, earning coins – upwards to 18,000 an hour – is as easy as killing enemies or completing some of the various objectives Garden Warfare’s game modes provide. It’s even easier to earn coins if you manage to hit the Jackpot in Garden Ops which awards you with 4,000 or 10,000 coins if you’re lucky enough to have the Zomboss slot machine land on three money bags or diamonds, respectively.

1389302064214

On to game modes. Alongside it’s wacky set of character classes and their alternative designs, Garden Warfare features modes that compliment the style of the game very well and fit within the Plants vs. Zombies universe. There are modes that appeal to both the casual and hardcore shooting audience alike, from the FPS staple Team Deathmatch, known as Team Vanquish in Garden Warfare, to the more complex Gardens and Graveyards, PopCap’s take on the classic Conquest and Rush mode from the Battlefield series. Gardens and Graveyards sees the Zombie team attacking and conquering the Plant’s garden, successfully capturing objectives in order to move to the next area of the map.

If going against other humans isn’t for you, Garden Warfare also features Garden Ops, which is essentially the game’s take on horde mode. It pits you and three of your online friends against wave after wave of the different Zombies types that have been featured throughout Plants vs. Zombies’ history while you come up with strategies to defend your garden. However, on every fifth round, the Zomboss pays a little visit and starts the slot machine which decides what type of zombies and bosses you will face that round.

If the above game modes intrigue you but you don’t feel like playing around with customized characters, PopCap has also included a very bare bones playlist for every game type. So for you purists out there, there’s something for you.

Unfortunately, if you do want to jump into the exclusive split-screen action with a friend of yours, you will find the experience rather lackluster on the Xbox One. Split-screen only allows for a rather watered down Garden Ops mode where the second player isn’t able to earn unlocks, achievements, coins or progress at all. To make it worse, you won’t be able to play online with the split-screen feature either. The other Xbox One-exclusive game mode, Boss mode, fairs a little better. Using the Kinect or a Smartglass enabled device, any friends or family members who might love the Plants vs. Zombies series but aren’t quite into shooters can join the fray by micro-managing your team in the same vein as the mobile titles. It’s not exactly split-screen, but I found it the more preferable way to play with others.

Despite Garden Warfare’s childish fun and light-hearted appeal, I fear the game’s launch time frame will hurt the online community in the long run. It feels squished in between some of this year’s bigger shooters and I don’t see the general population sticking around past the next two weeks once Titanfall drops, exclusive to the exact same platforms. You might ask, ‘well, doesn’t Titanfall appeal to a more mature audience while Garden Warfare is just a kids game?” The thing is, it stands as a testament to Garden Warfare’s quality that it’s an enjoyable shooter game for all ages. Also, don’t worry about the bad stigma currently surrounding some EA titles, as my online experience with the game so far has proven to be of higher quality than what I expected.

Since you can find the game on both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One (later on PC), you’re probably wondering what’s the difference between the two. It’s simple, really. It just comes down to the Xbox One having better graphics that pop out more and two additional game modes that any casual Plants vs. Zombies fans will love; Boss Mode and Split-Screen. In the end, I believe it justifies the additional $10 USD. That said, the Xbox 360 version is no slouch and is a steal for $29.99 USD.

PvZ Flyingshot

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare is definitely a breath of fresh air in a era of shooters that take themselves too seriously, which hinders what games should really be about — having fun. Furthermore, aside from being a surprisingly fun game, Garden Warfare offers a pretty deep customization and progression system that will keep players coming back for more. Sadly, due to the game’s release date, I personally feel the community won’t have a chance to flourish and will abandon the game once some of this year’s bigger titles launch. Undoubtedly, the game would’ve benefited from a Summer release. However, that being my biggest complaint, it’s hard not to love PopCap’s more-than-solid FPS translation of one of this generation’s most fun-filled mobile experiences.

4 / 5

All in all, Plants vs. Zombies is ridiculously fun and is a steal for its price, even though it’s an online-only multiplayer game. But those without internet or Xbox Live Gold are better off spending their money elsewhere. For that, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare receives four stars out of five.

Rumor – Battlefield 4 Naval Strike Emerges March 18, According to Origin

If EA’s game client Origin is anything to go by, Battlefield 4‘s Naval Strike expansion, the game’s third set of DLC, is arriving on March 18.

Take it with a grain of salt, but it’s worth pointing out that Origin erroneously and accurately predicted Battlefield 4 Second Assault’s launch on the PC and other platforms just last month.

Here is the Origin Denmark image sent in by numerous MP1st readers:

Should it prove accurate, the date more than likely corresponds to its release for Battlefield 4 Premium members. Naval Strike would then launch two weeks later on April 1 for non-Premium subscribers. (No, we don’t think this is an April fool’s joke!)

Battlefield 4 developer DICE outlined a few of the DLC’s key features earlier this month, claiming that Battlefield 2142’s Titan mode would return in the form of “Carrier Assault”. It would also introduce four new maps; Lost Islands, Nansha Strike, Wave Breaker, and Operation Mortar, along with five all-new weapons, the hovercraft vehicle, two additional gadgets, and ten new assignments.

Earlier rumors put Naval Strike at a March 30 launch, so Origin’s date would be pushing that forward by a couple of weeks.

What’s your take? A bit early for Battlefield 4’s third DLC, no?

Update

As “RoadTripToJalalabad” pointed out in the comments, a forum posting on Symthic surmised that with every launch of a Premium-exclusive dog tag set, so too launches a Battlefield 4 expansion in the same month. That theory has only help up twice so far, but should Naval Strike launch this March, that’s three out of five successes in a row.

It would also make sense that all of Battlefield 4’s expansions are set two months apart, as the Premium calendar points out above, the exception being Second Assault which many would agree was a special case. What are your thoughts?

Call of Duty Elite Shuts Down This Friday, Members Get Double XP

As of this Friday, February 28 at approximately 10am PST, Call of Duty Elite’s services will officially shut down.

The service that was first introduced near the end of Call of Duty: Black Ops’ life cycle went on to heavily support Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in 2011. With minimal support from Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, the service was eventually phased out and replaced by the official Call of Duty App in tandem with the release of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013.

To commemorate Call of Duty Elite’s retirement this Friday, Activision is offering two hours of Call of Duty: Ghosts Double XP to any one who has logged into the service since January 1, 2014. According to the company, the bonus Double XP will show up in your Call of Duty: Ghosts profile “soon”.

Be sure to read up on the full FAQ here.

Titanfall’s Install 20 GB on Xbox One, Up to 48 GB on PC [Updated]

Earlier today, Microsoft announced an Xbox One bundle for Titanfall. You can read more about the bundle through here.

Along with the announcement, in the fine print on the Xbox Wire, Microsoft mentioned that the install size of Titanfall may take up to 40 GB.

“On Xbox, Titanfall requires Xbox Live Gold membership. Titanfall game download card inside marked packages; up to 40 GB required.”

Oddly enough, earlier rumors put Titanfall at only a 15.88 GB download, but compared with the other shooters on Xbox One, the new size is within the new industry norm. Battlefield 4 needed  33GB, while Call of Duty: Ghosts came at 39 GB.

Update 2

Respawn Entertainment has clarified that the Titanfall’s Xbox One install size will, in fact, be 20 GB and not 40 GB, claiming that the game’s Xbox page’s fine print was written in error.

Update 1

Answering question on Twitter, Respawn Entertainment studio head Vince Zampella said that the PC version of Titanfall will be approximately a 21 GB download while the full install size will weight in at 48 GB.

The Art of Titanfall – Book Review

The Art of Titanfall the definitive look into the minds of its creators as Respawn Entertainment and Titan Books takes you back to where it all began: the art and the artists.

Author Andy McVittie has worked over 20 years in the video game industry, managing such publications as Mean MachinesNintendo Official Magazine and PlayStation Plus. He is also the co-author of Unlikely Hero Limited and has worked with clients including Yahoo!, Microsoft, Square Enix, Ubisoft, EA, and Respawn Entertainment.

Inside its 193 pages, you’ll find a forward by Respawn Entertainment lead artist Joel Emslie, an introduction by game director Steve Fukuda, and an afterword by studio CEO Vince Zampella. The book is sectioned off into four chapters; Titans & Pilots, Vehicles, Pilots & Tech, Locations, and Graphics & Modelling.

IMG_1179

There is a lot to read on the construction and origins of the Titans, as well as the artistic history of their design. In Chapter 1, you’ll also get a look at some of the characters that will be brought to life in the final game who will play a large role in its lore and story.

Chapter 2 holds everything there is to know about the tech of Titanfall. There are pages of vehicle schematics and model designs, though it’s not clear if any will be pilot-able in-game, other than the Titans. Still, with careful study, you’ll be able to point out and name many of the ships that whiz by or hover intimidatingly above the battlefields. Things get real interesting over in the weapons section where you’ll find designs for killing tools like the R101C Assault Rifle, Arc Cannon, Rail Gun, Avenger Gatling Gun, and Data Knife, among many others.

Chapter 3 holds the meat and potatoes of the Titanfall universe. 12 different locations are put on display in both their final form and during concept phases. You really won’t get a good sense of Titanfall’s massive scale and rich universe until flipping through these pages. You’ll learn about the significance of each planet and how each contributes to the science and backdrop of Titanfall. It may also have your imagination running wild when it comes to visualizing how some of the concepts might be put into practice in an actual multiplayer map.

IMG_1207

The last bit of the book looks at some of the interesting miscellaneous assets and details that bring Titanfall’s locales to life, as well as the physical modelling work that went into building the Titans and characters.

IMG_1191

The book concludes with a few touching words from the man that made it all happen, Vince Zampella, rounding things off with this quote: “There was never a clear path of how this one would come to be, but the result is rooted in the art and artists that built the foundation of our worlds and cemented our universe together.”

You can pick up The Art of Titanfall for $34.95 from retailers like Amazon, or you can also find it on its publisher’s website at Titan Books.

Titanfall launches on the Xbox One and PC March 11, and on the Xbox 360 March 25.

DICE Introduces Battlefield 4 Platoons, ‘Rolling Out February 27’

Platoons are coming to Battlefield 4 February 27.

According to the latest Battlefield 4 blog post, Platoons will feature the following:

  • The ability to create and join a Platoon for up to 100 members.
  • Basic Platoon management such as inviting, applying, and promoting/demoting members.
  • A private and public Platoon feed, where you can communicate and coordinate.
  • A Platoon emblem and tag that all members can easily apply.
  • The ability to earn stats for your Platoon and rank it up, and see all the matches you played together.

DICE writes that they “will begin to open up for Platoons on Battlelog on February 27, with some players getting access slightly before others in order to ensure proper feature stability.”

“When it is launched during this week and next, everyone will be able to join a Platoon, but Battlefield 4 Premium and a soldier with at least rank 10 will be required to create your own Platoon. The system is also completely platform agnostic, so anyone can join a Platoon no matter where they play Battlefield 4.”

The studio also notes that this is only “the first iteration of Platoons,” and that the team will continue to work on improvements as they gather feedback.

Read up on everything you need to know about Platoons in the full blog post right here.

Early access for Platoons is currently underway.

Rumor – Titanfall Gone Gold, Xbox One Version Might Get Upgraded to 1080p on Launch [Updated]

Update

In response to Twitter inquires, Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella has denied the rumor that Titanfall will be 1080p on the Xbox One at launch. Aw, snap! (Thanks, Henry Asenime.)

Screen Shot 2014-02-26 at 2.00.02 PM

Original Story

Titanfall might be getting a resolution boost on the Xbox One shortly after its launch on March 11.

A Titanfall community member going by the name “DucatiRossi46” who works “closely with Respawn and EA” has allegedly been told by the studio that “they are aiming for 1080p at launch following the Xbox One patches“.

According to him, “there will be 2 patches pre-release, which should get it to 1080p following the Xbox One patches.”

You can catch screen grabs of the conversation here.

Similarly, an Epic Games employee said on Reddit, “I can tell you Titanfall has gone gold and the final resolution is most def above 720p. That’s all I can say.”

Last we heard, Respawn Entertainment was aiming for 900p at launch after confirming that the beta ran at a 792p resolution. We also recently learned that Titanfall will be a 40 GB install on the Xbox One.

Take the news with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any official announcements.

DICE Testing Possible Battlefield 4 “Netcode” Fixes

According to DICE’s lead scripter on Battlefield 4, the studio in the midst of testing out possible ‘fixes’ for the game’s infamous “netcode” troubles.

Though DICE has been hard at work patching up Battlefield 4 and smoothing out some bugs and balancing issues, connection issues like ‘getting shot behind corners’, ‘instant-deaths’, and other inexplainable occurrences related to networking are beginning to frustrate a number of Battlefield users. Trips to various internet forums related to the game make that fairly evident.

That said, you can take comfort knowing that members of the studio are actively seeking out solutions, as is the case with DICE lead scripter, Mikael Hedberg.

As he points out on Twitter, the studio is currently running a few tests “for a possible ‘netcode’ fix” by asking users to join a specific test server.

According to Tweets, DICE is looking to better understand ‘how the server & network perform’ with regards to these issues.

We’ll be on the lookout for any official news related to the test’s outcome, should DICE make any announcements.
