Blizzard To Shut Down Diablo 3 Auction Houses In March

In a surprising twist, it looks like the folks over at Blizzard are going to be removing a key feature from the PC version of Diablo 3 in the near future, according to a recent announcement.

Those currently enjoying the PC version of the loot-driven dungeon crawler can expect the studio to shut down of both the regular Auction House and real money Auction House as March 18, 2014.

Regarding this announcement, Blizzard released this video explaining the decision in detail. Check it out below:

[youtube id=”ijCgKciMIE4″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

Thankfully, to accommodate this upcoming change, Diablo 3 fans will be receiving a drastic overhaul to the loot system with the upcoming Loot 2.0 update. Players will see loot drops of higher quality which will have a higher chance to be geared to your character, though the quantity of drops will be lowered overall, similar to what you’ll find on the home console version of Diablo 3.

Steam Box Reveal Next Week? Valve Hints at Hardware Announcement

At this year’s LinuxCon, Valve’s Co-Founder Gabe Newell took the stage to discuss multiple aspects of Steam development on Linux.

Newell has been both a vocal supporter of the open Linux platform and a detractor of Windows 8 citing its closed platform as a deterrent for Valve and game developers.

When it came time to discuss how Steam could improve its functionality and presence in the living room, Newell dropped this interesting tidbit:

“Next week we’re going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities we see for bringing Linux into the living room,” Newell said.

Do you think Valve will reveal the Steam Box next week? Or is it something else entirely? Let us know in the comments below.

Killzone: Shadow Fall – Introducing The Assault Class

Guerilla took to its official blog to release some brand spanking new information regarding one of the three playable classes in its new Killzone: Shadow Fall multiplayer.

The Assault Class boasts some similarities you’d find from other shooters, with a futuristic Killzone twist to them. Up next, presumably, will be the last two classes, Support and Scout.

You’ll more than likely find the Assault Class at the forefront of the battlefield, laying waste to enemies with their robust assault rifles. Assault players aren’t strictly offensive though, as they can deploy a Nano Shield, the Assault Class’ primary ability, to help protect themselves from incoming enemy fire while still being able to fire through it. With offensive and defensive strengths, the Assault Class looks to be one of the more popular playable classes in Shadow Fall.

Below are some secondary abilities you have the choice to play with, alongside the primary ability mentioned above.

SPEED DASH

The Speed Dash ability lets Assault players move faster for a short amount of time. It is very useful for seizing the initiative during mission modes where speed is of the essence, such as Search & Destroy. It can also be used to beat a hasty retreat when ammo supplies and health run low.

STUN BLAST

The Stun Blast ability temporarily stuns and blinds nearby enemies, making them easier to target. It is ideal for quickly turning the tables when faced with a particularly resilient opponent, or for situations where enemies are attacking from multiple directions.

BUDDY DRONE

The Buddy Drone ability deploys a flying combat drone that automatically attacks nearby enemies. As such, it works as an effective counter against impending brutal melee attacks. The Buddy Drone can be customized with skins.

Also released are some images showcasing the cosmetic look of the Assault Class, including all the guns and gadgets you’ll find in the Assault Class repertoire. Take a look and let us know what you think of this class in the comments! Killzone: Shadow Fall releases exclusively on the PlayStation 4 on launch day, November 15th.

Battlefield 4 – Vehiclular Warfare In Detail

Battlefield 4 will let you dominate from the land, sea, or air when you get your hands on the game this October 29. But what exactly is so ‘new’ about the way DICE is handling vehicles this time around?

In the latest Battlefield Blog entry, DICE lays it all on the table and shows you exactly how vehicles have been tweaked, altered or upgraded and explains some of the new vehicles and features you can look forward to this fall.

In Battlefield 4, players will have access to a number of amphibious vehicles, introducing a whole new perspective on all out war. You’ll be able to get behind the wheel of attack boats like the heavily armored RCB-90 patrol boat, transport infantry using the RHIB, or move around the map quickly with a Personal Water Craft (PWC).

The attack boat is unique in that not only can infantry spawn in it while it patrols the shore lines, but it also harbors two PWCs that can be used for a quick escape if things start to get ugly.

Tanks now have more customization options that aren’t as limiting as in games like Battlefield 3. Instead of featuring only three customization slots; secondary weapons, gadgets and upgrades, the gadget slot on a tank is now split into two, meaning you can equip both an optic and a countermeasure at the same time. There is now also room to customize your primary weapon, including different ammo types and mechanics.

Air vehicles have been tweaked so that their roles are now more clearly defined. In Battlefield 4, you’ll find two types of jets; the stealth jet, who is more adept at taking out other aerial vehicles, and the fighter jet, who is more effective at assaulting ground targets.

Helicopters will offer three different roles; the scout helicopter is fast, mobile and effective against infantry and lightly armored vehicles, the attack helicopter will devastate heavily armored vehicles, while the transport helicopter is the ultimate team play vehicle.

With the introduction of so many new vehicles, anti-air vehicles are getting a bit of an upgrade when it comes to their defensive measures. AA vehicles will now have access to a wider range of missiles in the secondary weapon slot, allowing you to fine tune your effectiveness against the varied amount of vehicles types.

Much like the weapons of Battlefield 4, all vehicles can be customizes with various camoflauge patterns, including adaptive camo patterns.

Vehicle damage has been significantly re-tuned for Battlefield 4. Rather than being disabled after a certain amount of “health” is taken off your vehicle and being faced with the choice of either bailing or waiting for an Engineer, you will now be disabled for only a short period of time, depending on the severity of an attack. If the damage of a single attack high enough, the “Critical” attack will disable you, but only for a temporary amount of time. No longer does it mean certain death (degenerating health).

Lastly, the damage model on tanks, which has been left, for the most part, untouched from Battlefield 3, does have a newly added “top” zone which takes significant damage from weapons like the FGM-148 (Javelin) and vehicle-based laser guided missiles. Otherwise, damage is still dependant on angle and whether or not the blow is glancing or direct.

Looks like there’s a lot to get a hang of in Battlefield 4 when it comes to vehicles! Luckily, you’ll be able to visit the game’s new Test Range to get a good feel for all the vehicles and become more proficient. Read more about vehicular warfare in Battlefield 4 right here.

Halo 4 – DLC Soon Required for Infinity Slayer, 343i To Introduce “Big Team Battle” and Rotational Playlists

Halo 4 fans can expect a number of changes being made to the game’s War Games multiplayer playlists in the coming weeks.

Looking forward to Halo 5 on the Xbox One, 343 Industries community manager Jessica “bsangel” Shea writes in the latest Halo Waypoint blog update that “focusing on the future also includes nurturing the current experience, so we’re in the process of tightening up Halo 4 multiplayer to ensure your online games contain more headshots and good times than you could ever hope to handle.”

Last week, we already saw the consolidation of the Slayer playlist as Legendary Slayer moved into the Infinity Slayer playlist as a Legendary BR variant. This Monday, September 16, the studio will be making similar changes to the Big Team Slayer playlist. Quite simply, Big Team Skirmish and Big Team Infinity slater will be merged into a single playlist called Big Team Battle.

Also this Monday, as a potential solution to increase the frequency in which DLC owners see purchased maps in matchmaking, 343i will be turning Infinity Slayer in to a DLC-required playlist, meaning that you will need the Majestic Map Pack in order to play Infinity Slayer.

The decision is not entirely final, as Shea stresses, “…this is an experiment, and is in no way, shape or form a permanent move at this time. The primary thing to note is we know you want to play your DLC more often, and we’re dedicated to doing everything we can to make that happen.”

Two weeks later, on September 30, the studio will be removing the Multi-Team, Dominion, and Champions Bundle DLC playlists. “As the numbers from those playlists shift into other ones, game quality will improve as skill matching and the other parameters used during the search phase (matching with other players that own DLC, for instance) become more effective,” writes Shea.

Here’s what the Halo 4 War Games playlist will look like as of September 30:

  • 8v8 – Big Team Battle
  • 5v5 – Capture the Flag
  • 4v4 – Infinity Slayer (may be renamed to Team Slayer)
  • 4v4 – SWAT
  • 4v4 – Action Sack
  • 4v4 – Team Snipers (next update on 9/30)
  • 4v4 – Ricochet (next update on 9/16)
  • 2v2 – Team Doubles (next update on 9/16)
  • 8-player FFA – Rumble Pit
  • 10-player FFA – Flood
  • Community Playlist: 4v4 – Team Throwdown (next update in October)
  • Community Playlist: 4v4 – Grifball

The studio will also offer a rotating playlist that will change every two weeks. Here is the tentative schedule for the rest of the year, which Shea notes is not yet final:

  • 9/30 – King of the Hill
  • 10/14 – Oddball
  • 10/28 – Forge Playlist (specifics coming soon)
  • 11/11 – Multi-Team
  • 11/25 – Dominion
  • 12/9 – Race
  • 12/23 – Rocket Race

Shea explains that, “We know removing playlists might sometimes be painful, but it is a necessary part of sustaining a game and its multiplayer community, and we do it knowing the positive impact it will have on your online experience.”

Lastly, the team has publicly stated the issues they will be looking into that came into effect during the release of the Champions Bundle DLC last month. Shea writes that we can expect an update late September that will look into the following:

  • Prefect, Mark V and Ricochet forearms display as ODST in first-person POV in Custom Games and Matchmaking.
  • Some Forge items in the “Scenery” and “Gadget” palettes of the Majestic and Castle Map Packs will have incorrect labels.
  • Non-host players in Forge mode will be unable to see other Monitors, though Gamertags will still hover. The host of the game is able to see all Monitors, and there is no additional gameplay impact – all other Forge features are fully accessible.
  • Loadouts are reset and Spartan Points are refunded when a new Loadout slot is unlocked. This occurs at SR-6, SR-14, SR-26 and SR-41 (and at other times as well). When you reach these levels, you will need to re-purchase all items and redo your Loadouts. No Spartan Points will be lost.

Despite entering into the tail end of its life cycle on the current-generation Xbox, it appears that there is a lot to look forward to for Halo 4, as small as the upcoming changes might be.

With that, we want to ask you, how much longer do you see yourself playing Halo 4? Are you dropping everything Xbox 360-related when the next-generation consoles hit, or do you see yourself sticking with the Xbox 360 and Halo 4 well into the future? Let us know in the comments!

Steam Family Sharing – Valve Picks The Gold From Microsoft’s Dumpsters

For anyone interested in the Xbox One, Microsoft’s family sharing plan was a big deal.  It would be the first time a console gave you the ability to share your games digitally.  Then, almost arbitrarily, MS pulled the plug on it while also reversing their DRM polices.  To say MS screwed up the Xbox One’s reveal and post-reveal is an understatement.  Not only did they try to severely restrict the user’s control of their purchases, but then they removed a core feature that set the Xbox One apart from the competition.

In comes Valve.

[youtube id=”YcRQiLKjcmM” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Don’t get me wrong, Microsoft came up with the idea of Family Sharing and it’s a wonderful idea, but they screwed up in it’s execution, royally.  Valve announcing a comparable plan is a brilliant move on their part to enrich the already praised feature sets of the Steam store and software.  It gives Steam users something new and innovative, pushes the transition from physical to digital media distribution, and most importantly, it puts pressure on Sony and Microsoft to offer something similar.

Considering MS’s initial intent with the Xbox One – i.e., if you don’t have internet, buy the X360 – it’ll be interesting to see how they adapt to Valve basically picking their dumpsters for the gold they threw away. Rumors of MS bringing back the Family Sharing Plan have been buzzing for weeks and Valve might have just told MS to either do or do not, because when you’re trying to win a console war, there is no try, only do.  Trying is what we like to say the Dreamcast did.
