Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Prestige and Hardened Edition First Details

Details of a Prestige and Hardened Edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 have begun surfacing out of this year’s GameStop Expo in San Antonio, Texas.

A recent GameStop press release detailing the third wave of pre-order bonuses for Black Ops 2 reads, clearly mentioning a Black Ops 2 Prestige Edition:

  • The Quadrotor XBOX Live Avatar Prop or the PS3 Dynamic Theme. Choose either of these exclusive digital items based on console preference and guarantee your download by picking up your game when it launches.
  • Treyarch VIP Experience Sweepstakes. Enter for your chance to win a tour of Treyarch Studios, a multiplayer session with developers, a swag bag with a signed Prestige Edition of Call of Duty®: Black Ops II, and more.
  • Entry into Turtle Beach Prize Pack Sweepstakes. Enter for your chance to win one of a 100Call of Duty®: Black Ops II Turtle Beach Ear Force X-Ray Gaming headsets.

Additionally, an announcement of a Hardened Edition and details of the Prestige Edition have begun surfacing out of the currently on-going expo. According to FPS General, the Prestige Edition will include:

  • Remote-controled UAV Flyer (presumably modeled after the Quadrotor Drone).
  • Exclusive in-game upgrades.
  • Exclusive Zombie Maps.
  • Nuketown 2025.

It is also mentioned that this edition in particular will present itself as a replica Care Package, though probably not as big as the in-game counterpart.

No word on whether an ELITE subscription would be included in the Hardened or Prestige Edition. However, more details are to come…

Thanks, Charlie Intel and John Caroll for the tip.

Update

Activision recently posted this image of what could be the “care package” Prestige Edition of Black Ops 2.

Along with the image, they mentioned, “Dan Bunting, David Vonderhaar, and the rest of the Treyarch team have been working on something special. Look what’s dropping tomorrow.”

We’ll most likely hear an official announcement and learn more about the Hardened and Prestige edition of Black Ops 2 tomorrow, so make sure to stay tuned to MP1st!

Gears of War: Judgment Multiplayer Goes Free-For-All

A first for the Gears of War franchise, Developers People Can Fly and Epic Games will be introducing the classic free-for-all multiplayer game mode to Gears of War: Judgment this March19, reports OXM.

All Gears of War multiplayer modes, up until now, have been primarily team-based, including the previously announced OverRun mode, which will also be debuting in Gears of War: Judgment. You can read more about OverRun in detail (and watch) right here.

Are you ready to run it solo? What do you think about introducing free-for-all to Gears of War’s multiplayer?

Treyarch Gearing Up Towards a Black Ops 2 Zombies Reveal, Nuketown Zombies?

We’ve seen the single player and we’ve seen the competitive multiplayer, but those elusive Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Zombies are still nowhere to be found.

That could change soon, however, as Treyarch has been leaving trails leading to what could be the initial reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s Zombies, Treyarch’s “biggest, most-ambitious Zombies ever,” as studio head Mark Lamia put it earlier.

Last week, Treyarch teased us with this image on the official Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Facebook page with the caption, “Something’s coming…..”

Today, we get another clue, this time tying in with the popular multiplayer map Nuketown, which we know will be returning in Back Ops 2, though depicted in the year 2025.

“There goes the neighborhood,” reads the caption.

This, of course, raises the obvious question: Will we get to slaughter hordes of zombies on our favorite Black Ops multiplayer map? Until we find out, we’ll be on the lookout for more Zombies clues!

Let the speculation begin. Leave your thoughts below!

Arctic Combat Takes a Page Out Of Counter-Strike, Literally

The free-to-play first person shooter, Arctic Combat, seems to be under some fire with private testers finding very a familiar discovery.

[youtube id=”-3ibiOdPLCA” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Titled “Sand Storm”, this Arctic Combat map has players battling it out in fast-paced and tight, close quarter areas. Now if that video above didn’t remind you of anything, here’s a classic, similar-looking map being played on the highly popular tactical FPS title, Counter-Strike.

[youtube id=”XN9XCTpER3Y” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Besides some objects being placed in different spots, Sand Storm is nearly a carbon copy of de_dust2 from Counter-Strike. Not only that, but you can also see that the gameplay does seem a bit Call of Duty-ish. I will admit though, despite it’s imitations, it does look decently fun.

What do you guys think? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Thanks, PCGamer.

Minecraft – How Multiplayer Changed My Mind

A lot of people like to debate whether or not Minecraft is a good game.  Those that argue in favor of it typically talk about how it offers basically an unlimited platform for creativity.  Those that think otherwise argue that a lack of any real objectives or goals makes the game pointless and therefore boring.  Up until very recently (this past weekend), I would have agreed with the naysayers.

[youtube id=”bOlrP0LtXfQ” width=”600″ height=”350″]

I’ve been playing MC off and on for nearly 6 months and never really cared much for it.  Without an objective to achieve, I always felt like I was just wasting my time building things with no purpose or function.  That all changed a couple Fridays ago.  A fellow member of an invite-only site that I’m a member of posted that he had started a new MC server just for site-members.  Against my better judgement I decided to check it out, and I was instantly hooked.

In my last article about Gaming and Violence, I mentioned that now if your game isn’t an online title, it’s dead in the water, and MC is the perfect example of what I mean.  Played alone, MC gets old, fast.  Played collaboratively with friends and strangers, however, MC becomes an entirely different game.  Instead of mindlessly building useless things, you start trying to build things to help your friends out or show off your skills to them.  The objective becomes “check out what we can build” and stops being, well, nothing.

While I will admit that there is a linear objective in MC singlplayer, what makes the game interesting isn’t getting to “The End,” it’s getting there in the most creative way possible, which typically means never getting there at all.

Minecraft offers a world of possibilities that challenges the player by limiting their capacity for creativity with their ability to mine and build their imaginary structures, block by block.  If you don’t have MC and are skeptical of it’s current popularity or appeal, the only advice I can offer is that if you built things out of legos with your friends as kid, you will enjoy MC, and probably a lot.

But what version should you buy?  Well, it really depends on what you want to get out of MC.  If you want to hang out with friends and casually build stuff, then the Xbox version is probably going to suit you best.  If you’re looking to do more intricate things on a grander scale and don’t mind having to use skype to talk with your friends and track down servers to play on, then the PC version is going to be where it’s at for you.

Please share your thoughts, seeds, or videos in the comments as I’m fairly new to Minecraft and would really enjoy checking out some cool MC stuff.

Thank you for reading.

Battlefield 3 – DICE Quadruples Official Servers On PS3 and Xbox 360

Great news for all you BF3 players who have been asking for more official servers on the consoles.

Today, DICE announced that they will be adding four times the number of official dedicated servers on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, effective immediately.

Many fans have requested that DICE re-implement more official serveres since the introduction of the rent-a-server option, which seems to have gotten rid of a number of these official severs, or at least made them hard to get into. Unfortunately, joining games that are non-DICE run at times can result in extremely long matches or abusive use of admin/moderation powers.

If you want to get into these severs, or at least have the best of chances, you may search the term “DICE” in the search bar of Server Browser.

Good luck!

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Impressions – A Welcome Addition to the Console Audience

Counter-Strike is a tactical first person shooter that originated as a mod, created by Minh Le and Jess Cliffe, for the first  Half-Life title produced by the famed Valve Software.  The game became an instant classic pitting Counter-Terrorist operatives against their Terrorist counterparts, comprised of round based gametypes that saw players either planting/defusing bombs, rescuing hostages, or simply eliminating the opposition.  Counter-Strike’s popularity with professional gaming leagues and a dedicated fanbase for over a decade is a testament to the tried and true gameplay mechanics that made the title so successful.  For the first time on current-gen consoles, players have the ability to experience Valve and Hidden Path’s latest iteration, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.  After a couple hours reliving old moments on the 360 version, I can say with confidence that CS:GO captures the spirit of what made it so well known in the PC gaming realm.

Retaining influences from both CS:Source and 1.6, old timers will be pleased to know that the gameplay for CS:GO is relatively intact.  Wielding knives will make you move quicker, crouch jumping will help you traverse certain obstacles (can be done on 360 by pressing jump and the left trigger by default), and objective based modes are what you’d expect.  New players however may be turned off by the inability to aim down weapon sights, absence of aim assist, small player count (10 players max), and the overall learning curve that is sure to frustrate newcomers.   Counter-Strike has always been about skill, precise aiming, teamwork, and understanding maps.  Consoles are no different and I highly recommend new players to practice each gametype/map offline with bots and familiarize themselves with the weapons/equipment through the title’s included “Weapons Course.”

For experienced players, there are familiar and new modes added to the CS formula consisting of these 4 gametypes:

Arms Race:  Also known as Gun Game where each kill awards you with new weapons. The first player to kill with every weapon wins the round.

Demolition: A new and unique game mode that rewards players with new weapons in a preset weapons menu by getting kills within a round.  Round is won when the enemy team is eliminated or if objectives are completed.

Classic Casual: The typical Counter-Strike game mode where you must buy weapons by earning currency through a buy wheel when a round is about to start. Currency is earned by getting kills or completing objectives.  In Casual mode, friendly fire is off along with team collision, meaning you can’t bump or be blocked by your teammates.  Best out of  10 rounds wins the match.

Classic Competitive: By far my favorite gametype since it closely resembles my first time playing CS  in version 1.3.  It is similar to Casual except friendly fire is on along with team collision.  Armor and defuse kits are also available and is best out of 30 rounds.

There are 8 new weapons featured in CS:GO, some which replace older weapons from previous iterations like the MP7 sub-machine gun or the Nova shotgun.  16 maps in total are available from the get-go; 8 of which are returning updated classics found in the Classic game modes, while the 8 newer maps are spread across the Arms Race and Demolition game modes.

Graphically, like most Valve titles, CS:GO employs the Source engine running at 30 frames per second on consoles.  While definitely showing its age, it is more than offset by fantastic player models and weapon models that have been mirrored properly this time around.  Revamped maps are also pretty to look at and will most likely drive home the nostalgia factor for seasoned veterans.

If you are familiar with playing The Orange Box or the Left 4 Dead series on consoles, you’ll feel right at home with the controls for CS:GO.  Like Left 4 Dead, the console versions allow you to turn 180 degrees with the RB button to make up for the console’s slow turn radius when an opposing foe catches you off guard from behind.  One aspect of CS:GO that I really like is that controls can be mapped to any button you please.  If you have a controller with extra programmable buttons, you will definitely benefit from a wide range of control options that allow you to deploy equipment or primary/secondary weapons.

While there are some subtle changes to maps, weapons, equipment and the buy menu, CS:GO for the Xbox 360 works surprisingly well preserving both the gameplay and tactics that defined the franchise. Additionally, as a PS3 player, you always have the option of a mouse and keyboard for that more classic PC experience.  In summation, for a dominantly PC oriented game, CS:GO is a worthy addition to consoles if you are either an experienced player or a newcomer who is patient enough to stand the title’s drastic distinction to other shooters along with its steep learning curve.

Have you had a chance to sit down with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on either the PC or consoles yet? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below!

Modern Warfare 3 Continues It’s Dominance on Xbox Activity Charts, New Demo Available

According to the latest Xbox LIVE activity charts via Major Nelson, Modern Warfare 3 continues to sit atop the activity throne.

Along with this news, a new demo has surfaced on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for download. I’m not quite sure why this demo is just now showing up, because surely everybody has played Modern Warfare 3 by now. However, if you don’t own Modern Warfare 3 and wish to give it another shot, you can add it to your download queue.

The demo is exclusive to Gold members only and packs a hefty 1.04 GB in size. The official description given of the demo seems to be the opening scene of the campaign.

“The Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 Single-Player Demo is an epic gameplay experience that takes you to the front lines of World War 3 as a Special Operations soldier engaging in a fierce firefight with Russian infantry and vehicles throughout the financial district of New York City.  Highlights of the mission include close quarters urban warfare, controlling air support through the use of a attack  drone, and manning a helicopter mini-gun during extraction.”

Even With Battlefield 4 In Development, “We’re Still Working on Battlefield 3,” Says DICE Exec. Producer

As many Battlefield fans are already aware, Battlefield 4 is coming and DICE isn’t taking their sweet time with this official fourth numbered release in the well-established series of first-person military shooters.

Understandably, many were thrown off by the announcement, considering DICE’s previously established pattern of releasing spin-off Battlefield titles in between major numbered titles. Most were expecting a return to the Bad Company series, as there has now been two Battlefield games (three if you include Battlefield Play4Free), Battlefield: 1943 and Battlefield 3, since the last Bad Company spin-off, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

So, how has DICE absorbed the rather mixed reaction so far? Executive producer Patrick Bach recently spoke to VG24/7  to answer one of the bigger questions on most Battlefield fans’ minds, why abandon Battlefield 3 so soon?

“Most of the comments so far have been positive, but some of the more avid fans get upset because they think this means we may no longer support Battlefield 3 – which is of course completely wrong,” ensured Bach. “The game is very near and dear to us, we have all the expansion packs coming and we’re showing stuff from them. We have a big team working on it – so we’re not changing any of that. We’re still working on Battlefield 3 and making sure it’s the best game we have on the market right now.

“But we are working on BF4 which is more or less all I can say.”

Bach also commented on the possibility of a much more positive reaction to a Battlefield: Bad Company 3 announcement, had it been the case:

“We’d probably [have gotten] a better reaction [to a Bad Company 3 announcement] within a certain group of our community, but again, we’re getting a lot of good feed back for BF4, and of course there are some people who want something different.” He continued, “No matter what you do, there’s always those who want something different, so it’s a constant struggle.”

Despite the recent controversy, it is important to keep in mind that DICE has, in fact, been releasing Battlefield titles on a yearly basis, more or less:

  • 2002 – Battlefield: 1942
  • 2004 – Battlefield: Vietnam
  • 2005 – Battlefield 2
  • 2006 – Battlefield: 2142
  • 2008 – Battlefield: Bad Company
  • 2009 – Battlefield: Heroes
  • 2009 – Battlefield: 1943
  • 2010 – Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  • 2011 – Battlefield: Play4Free
  • 2011 – Battlefield 3

Bach comments, “the other thing is, we’ve been releasing Battlefield games in a constant stream. If you look at all the Battlefield versions we’ve had – the Bad Company series, Battlefield 1943 – there’s a lot of Battlefield between Battlefield 2 and Battlefield3 – so it’s not as if we’re only working on one thing at a time. We’ve had several piplelines going in parallel, so people shouldn’t worry too much about those things.”

This isn’t the first time DICE has come under fire. Previously, global community manager Daniel Matros had his hands tied answering the question, why not Battlefield: Bad Company 3?

So, are you still unconvinced over the longevity of Battlefield 3? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Remember, pre-ordering the limited edition of Medal of Honor: Warfighter releasing this October 23rd will grant you access to the Battlefield 4 beta coming up this fall.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Multiplayer Review

Fall of Cybertron is a direct sequel to the surprising smash hit War For Cybertron from 2010. If you have ever thought to yourself, why isn’t there a kick ass Transformers title out there that I can play online with my buddies? Well, if War For Cybertron didn’t fit the bill for you, Fall of Cybertron definitely will.

Across the board, High Moon Studios stepped their game up and added some great customization features that could literally have you spending a majority of the time just messing around in the menus. You’re probably wondering at this point if Fall of Cybertron is worth your time, let alone the full retail value. Don’t fret, I’ll answer that question for you in depth.

Basic Multiplayer Information

So we start off with some basic information. Fall of Cybertron ships with 10 maps and 4 modes at launch. The 4 modes available are Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Capture The Flag and Head Hunter. The 10 maps available are Array, Convoy, Tempest, Launch, Bowels, Spire, Abandoned, Desolation, Corrosion and Sewers. All of these maps are somehow inspired from the single player campaign. Most of these maps are pretty big, as Fall of Cybertron pits 6 Autobots against 6 Deceptions, and it lacks constant intense action as times. However, this allows strategic vehicle action. After all, this is Transformers.

Team Deathmatch is your typical mode, with the first team to 40 kills winning the match. Conquest is similar to most domination-styled modes. There are 3 capture points you must capture – the first team to 400 score wins the match. Capture The Flag is, again, your traditional mode with 3 flag captures netting your team a victory. Head Hunter will be most familiar to Halo players – kill an enemy and pick up their spark. Accumulating 30 sparks as a team will win your team the match.

The lack of game modes is probably High Moon’s answer to keep these modes populated, as not many people play the Transformers titles online to begin with in comparison to other name brand shooters. This was one of the issues that the last Transformers title experienced once DLC started being released, so hopefully in a few months, this title will still be running strong, as it deserves to.

Gameplay

The most important aspect of any multiplayer shooter is gameplay. You could be the most graphically sound game we have ever seen, if you lack any sort of decent gameplay, nobody will care. This is what Fall of Cybertron has done extremely well. Not only does the control scheme feel right, but everything about the gameplay is extremely fun. Transforming in between your robot and vehicle forms is quick and seamless. Switching between weapons and aiming modes is also quick and seamless. There doesn’t seem to be any hiccups in this area, and that’s something High Moon should be very proud of.

Teletraan 1

Challenges make their return to multiplayer. Named Teletraan1, the Cybertron Network System, this is the hub for all challenges, leaderboards and Prime Mode. The challenges range from class specific challenges to basic challenges. Completing these challenges nets you XP needed to rank up your character. There are three different tiers to each challenge, with each tier increasing the challenge amount along with the XP reward given. Finally accumulate 25 headshots? Get bonus XP. Finally use your special abilities 5 times? Get bonus XP. Doing basically anything will net you some bonus XP, and this is where a big bulk of your XP is going to come from.

The leaderboards can be sorted to be extremely descriptive. You can narrow it down between friends, worldwide and game mode specific leaderboards. Prime Mode is Fall of Cybertron’s so called prestige mode. You can enter Prime Mode up to 100 times once you reach the max rank of 25 for all 4 classes at once. There are specific Prime Mode appearance unlocks that you can use through the customization options, so heading into Prime Mode will not only allow you to start leveling again, but you get some badass unique and more than likely rare options.

Customization

The customization for Fall of Cybertron is off the charts, and is the brightest point on this entire multiplayer experience. You can select each part of your transformers appearance, ranging from the head, shoulders, arms, and legs to their voice, decals and armor set. There are over 10 selections for each body part to choose from, including some Prime Mode appearance unlocks available for the diehard multiplayer fan. You can create your own transformer in many unique ways, or use a default body set of one of the more popular transformers, like Optimus Prime, Bumblebee or Megatron. Choosing a default body will cost you Energon, which you can gain by playing and finishing matches.

There are over 50 different color combinations for both factions to choose from, so you will definitely be seeing different sorts of transformers out there on the battlefield. You can even tweak the metallic shown on your robots chassis. Each class has their own respective weapons, upgrades and special ability unlocks. These unlocks are strictly level based, so simply playing the game enough can get you these unlocks. You can bring along two weapons with you, with there being four total weapons to choose from for each class.

Classes Explained

With four main character classes to choose from, you have to pick one which really resembles and plays to your style the best to get familiar to the multiplayer. The Infiltrator’s special ability is cloaking, giving you the edge to be sneaky during combat to cap flags or flank behind an opponent for a crucial kill. The Destroyer’s special ability is a Diffraction Barrier, which is a huge barrier that blocks incoming bullets, grenades and rockets. You should use this when you are bogged down in cover or you see a teammate taking heavy fire. The Titan’s special ability is Whirlwind. This gives you the ability to do a whirlwind melee attack that increases your melee speed and damage. Finally, the Scientist’s special ability is a healing beam. Use this on weakened friendlies for an XP bonus. All four of these classes have their own unique vehicle mode as well, with the Scientist being the only class able to fly. A huge negative and step back was the removal of vehicle abilities. Not being able to barrel role while flying becomes an issue at times, and it is truly a missed feature from War For Cybertron.

Matchmaking

Fall of Cybertron allows you to filter your matchmaking experience to Regional or Worldwide. I would suggest sticking to Regional unless you are having a tough time finding players. Throughout my few days online I have experienced the same fate I experienced with the previous Transformers title: some pretty bad lag spikes at random times. I hope this is something High Moon can tweak and improve because when the game runs as intended, it can be extremely fun. The same can be said in vice versa, when the game doesn’t run as intended, it becomes extremely frustrating to deal with.

Escalation

Escalation isn’t necessarily multiplayer, but it is Fall of Cybertron’s epic survival co-op mode, and it returns! In Escalation, you have 15 waves to survive with up to three other players. Each wave gets increasingly more difficult, with more waves and tougher pissed off enemies. Scattered throughout Escalation are weapons, ammo, health and upgrades. You can purchase these items with Energon gained from the enemies you kill, and by surviving waves. There are also other key areas you can unlock that are more expensive than what your typical weapon would be. These areas can be accessed by teaming up with your friends and all contributing Energon towards unlocking them. They provide the advantage of extending the playing field to have more room to run around and smash defying Decepticons, or Autobots, depending on the map you’re on.

With 4 launch Escalation maps to choose from, and both factions to choose from depending on the map, this mode can get to be some fun. The character you choose in Escalation is based on the originals from the TV shows, like Optimus Prime, Ratchet, Starscream, Megatron, Warpath, etc. No customized Transformers can be chosen like in the regular multiplayer modes. This mode only adds depth to the overall experience that is Fall of Cybertron and I’m very excited about it’s return.

Conclusion

If you are on the fence about buying or renting this game, head to the marketplace on your respective consoles and download the demo. The demo will give you a glimpse at two chapters from the single player experience, along with the multiplayer map Array on two game modes, Team Deathmatch and Conquest. You are level capped on the demo, so you won’t be able to experience the full customization options and unlockable weapons that are available.

All in all, when the game runs smooth with a proper host connection, I find this title to be extremely fun. My main issue and only concern after playing for a few days is I can only count a few games in which I would consider lag free. Hopefully this is just launch issues being ironed out and the networking can be improved in the future, otherwise I see Fall of Cybertron dying out quickly due to this issue. I have very high respect for High Moon and their dedication to the Transformers brand and it’s fans. They were quick on the trigger to improve the demo, providing balance tweaks to sharpen the game experience.

So, to quickly recap, 10 maps, 4 modes, challenges and some great customization options head Fall of Cybertron’s multiplayer experience. It’s nothing we haven’t already seen before from other games in terms of game modes, although it is nice to finally see a developer make a decent Transformers title for once. The customization alone is a great tool that I was extremely excited to get my hands on with and experience. For any Transformers fan out there, especially the Generation 1 fans, you need to be playing Fall of Cybertron.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Misses European PlayStation Store Update

As many know, Valve’s highly anticipated tactical first-person shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has finally hit the global digital marketplace. Well, for most gamers, that is.

While the game can currently be downloaded across Steam, PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America, only Steam and Xbox 360 users can enjoy the title in Europe, at the moment. So, what happened to the EU PS3 version?

“Unfortunately counter strike has not been made available on the European PlayStation store today, and we apologise to those of you who were looking forward to playing it,” Sony recently said in a statement issued to CVG. “We hope to resolve this issue as quickly as possible, and will let you know if the situation changes,” they continued.

Needless to say, many of our European PS3 friends are rather upset at the issue. Hopefully it can be resolved quickly and PS3 gamers overseas will be scoring headshots in no time. we’ll be sure to update this piece as the situation progresses.

Thanks to our MP1st readers for bringing this to our attention.
