DICE Presents The New 5-Flag Design of Battlefield 3’s Wake Island

In the latest issue of Inside DICE, Lead Gameplay Designer Gustav Halling walks Battlefield 3 fans through the evolution of the popular Battlefield map, Wake Island, from its 3-flag to 5-flag variant on consoles, including other small tweaks made to all versions.

When the last Battlefield 3 expansion pack, Back to Karkand, dropped back in December, fans were treated to four of the most memorable and classic Battlefield maps, including Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman, Sharqi Peninsula and Wake Island. PC players, thanks to the platform’s powerful hardware, were able to experience these maps to their full potential, meaning both 5-flag and 6-flag variants were included in some of the map layouts. Unfortunately, hardware limitations of the consoles meant a 5-flag variant of the popular Wake Island was initially impossible. Not only that, but play tests showed that the lower player count of 24 players on console meant 5 flags would have stretched the player base too thin.

Up to this point, the only version of Wake Island that strictly console players would have been able to experience was the version found in the standalone, downloadable title, Battlefield: 1943. This version did, in fact, include a 5-flag layout, but was significantly scaled down (by 30%, according to Halling) compared to the initial size of the original Wake Island. This made for more action-packed gameplay while keeping a larger number of capture points.

Nevertheless, the outcry for a 5-flag layout of BF3’s Wake Island on consoles hit the internet in full force, eventually inspiring Halling to find a way to make it happen. He secretly began working on this project, finding new ways to improve upon the hardware limitations of consoles. Knowing that the upcoming Battlefield update that was to hit in March or April, Halling set out to achieve this goal by then.

This meant that a few tweaks needed to be made to the Frostbite 2 engine as well as to the general layout of the map. After sorting out some techinal issues, Halling took the PC version of BF3’s Wake Island and began play testing from there. One noticeable change was the new placement of the ani-aircraft guns which are now situated on the beach. This change also made into the PC version as well. You can check out images of the different layouts below:

Pre-patch, 3-flag layout
AKA Wake Island Day 2

In conclusion, a brand new 5-flag layout of Wake Island was settled upon for the console audience and was integrated into the latest patch. Of course, players still have the choice to continue playing on the 3-flag variant, which Halling states players might find more action-packed, especially at the capture points. While the 5-flag variant is now a viable option, players should expect more vehicular combat and sparsed-out firefights in between flags.

After having a taste of both 3-flag and 5-flag Wake Island variants, which one do you prefer? Let us know in the comments below!

Remember, you can check out more of Halling’s work in the upcoming, vehicle-heavy, Armored Kill DLC.

New Resident Evil 6 Multiplayer Details and Release Date

More details about Resident Evil 6’s multiplayer co-op experience have surfaced since the recent reveal of a brand new trailer during Capcom’s Captivate event in Rome.

First, if you haven’t checked out the new trailer, give it a glimpse right here:

[youtube id=”pyUQxKh-HEg” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Other than the loads of scary monsters and zombies, you’ll also notice a revised release date: October 2nd, 2012. This applies to both the Xbox 360 and PS3 while the PC version is due out at a later date.

On to some multiplayer goodness. Capcom has confirmed that co-op will, indeed, be making a return in Resident Evil 6 but will now support a drop-in and drop-out function. This means that players can enter or leave another’s game at any point without having to restart the level at the last checkpoint. Previously, in Resident Evil 5, players needed to enter games together through the loadout screen preceding each game.

In the trailer, you’ll also notice that each of the three protagonists, Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy and Jake Muller, will each have their own companion whom another player will have the ability to control, much like RE5.

Capcom has confirmed that the hugely popular Mercenaries mode will also be returning. Thankfully, it will be unlocked from the start this time around.

More multiplayer details including new co-op mechanics are still on their way, stated Capcom. Stay tuned to MP1st on Twitter and Facebook to find out more!

Thanks, IGN

Modern Warfare 3 – Elite Maps Sanctuary and Foundation Hit Xbox Live on April 10th

Beachhead Studios announced today that Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360 will be getting two new maps tomorrow.

The makers of Call of Duty Elite, Beachhead Studios, revealed on Facebook that “Sanctuary and Foundation maps arrive tomorrow for Xbox 360 ELITE Premium members.”

Update: Images of the two maps have been posted on the content calendar along with their descriptions:

Sanctuary

“Suspended in the air one thousand feet up, you’ll battle more than altitude in the towering sandstone monasteries of Central Greece. Formed over millions of years, this sanctuary’s natural rock pillars have repelled invading armies and withstood the ravages of time but now they’ll face your deployment. Test your skills—and the ancient monks’ craftsmanship—with your arsenal of SMG’s, assault rifles and shotguns. Just remember: don’t look down.”

Foundation

“Journey into the heart of South Korea for a decommissioned concrete factory where the cement flows and bullets fly. After decades of constructing roads and buildings, the towering facility is now a perfectly-constructed combat zone for sniping and run-and-gun rules of engagement. Don’t stand in awe of the towering concrete crusher at the center of the factory unless you want to see your kill ratio meet the same fate.”

We expect ‘Collection 1’ playlists to be changed back to Elite playlists to accommodate the new maps.

Sanctuary and Foundation will mark the seventh and eight DLC drops for Modern Warfare 3 so far. 24 drops in total have been promised.

PS3 users can look forward to drops 4, 5, and 6 on April 12th.

Gears of War: Exile Rumored for Kinect has been Canned

Throughout last year, you might have heard of a Gears of War project being made for Kinect, it turns out an unannounced Gears project, called Gears of War: Exile, was in the works at some point. However, the project has been put aside.

Speaking to GameSpot, Epic Games’ design director, Cliff Bleszinski, has decided to “bury the hatchet.” He explained, “Gears of War: Exile was an unannounced game that I can’t give any details about that has since been cancelled.”

The game was believed to be an on-rails Kinect title that was supposed to be announced at E3 last year.

Are you disappointed to learn that the project was cancelled? I guess not.

Featured image is a Gears of War 3 wallpaper, not related to Exile.

Black Ops 2 – Possible Tweaks to Headquarters Game Mode

Treyarch Developer David Vonderhaar brainstorms with his followers ways to improve the Headquarters game mode in the next Call of Duty title.

For simplicity sake, we’re going to call this title “Black Ops 2,” what with the recent leaks concerning both multiplayer information as well as a Black Ops 2 logo including a release date of its debut trailer. Check them both out if you haven’t yet!

On Twitter, David Vonderhaar of Treyarch asked his followers, specifically addressing Call of Duty tournament players, “if the HQ points rotated in a predictable order (not random picking) would you be able to play it competitively?” He added as a follow up, “would you want the locations close together … or spread out?”

Many agreed but contested that HQ can’t be competitive as long as one team spawns closer to the objective than the other. Vonderhaar did countered that “their is always a time till next point is able to be captured,” and also that “most competitive maps are small-medium in the first place.”

Some added that HQ would be much more competitive if it were to include rounds. This would mean that if one team were to spawn closer to a particular objective, at least it would even out in the second round. When asked if it was possible, Vonderhaar replied, “rounds are doable.” He also suggested, “don’t you think a lot of [the problems] could be mitigate by shorter HQ lifetimes, short 30 second set-uptime, and round-based game?”

If Vonderhaar were to draw from these conclusions, HQ in “Black Ops 2” could see round-based HQ matches as well as shorter HQ lifetimes.

Do you think HQ would become more competitive with these settings and would you be more inclined to play it in “Black Ops 2?” Let us know in the comments below!

Missed the latest CoD news? Vonderhaar also talked about the map voting system, health regeneration perks, and alluded to a “Heat Vision” point/killstreak in Black Ops 2.

Most Played Xbox 360 Titles for the Week of March 26th

Microsoft’s Major Nelson has released the top 20 games played on Xbox Live for the week of March 26th. The activity is measured by uniques users, not hours played. As long as the console is hooked to the net, whatever you’re playing (single-player or multiplayer) counts.

This week’s list is almost a carbon copy of last week’s list with exactly the same top six games leading the charge.

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  3. FIFA 12
  4. Battlefield 3
  5. Halo: Reach
  6. Modern Warfare 2
  7. Gears of War 3
  8. NBA 2K12
  9. Skyrim
  10. Mass Effect 3
  11. GTA IV
  12. Forza Motorsport 4
  13. Madden NFL 12
  14. NHL12
  15. Halo 3
  16. Saints Row: The Third
  17. Red Dead Redemption
  18. Call of Duty 4
  19. Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City
  20. NBA 2K11

Special Note: Unfortunately, there is no official activity numbers for PSN because Sony doesn’t release its’ activity numbers. PC, on the other hand, is impossible to track due to multiple services (Steam, Origin, Battle.net, and others) and independent games.

[Updated] Black Ops 2 Logo Allegedly Leaked Including Debut Trailer Release Date

Update: CoDInform has informed us of yet another leaked Black Ops 2 image, this time with the additional subtitle, “Reveal Trailer is Coming.” In our eyes, this one seems rather fake as the subtitle itself is of a different quality than that of the font used for “Black Ops 2” and “04.28.12.” Check out the image below to judge for yourself.

Original Story: Another Call of Duty: Black Ops leak! This time, it seems to be the official logo for Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty title, Black Ops 2, including a potential release date for its debut trailer.

Call of Duty 9 has suffered a number of leaks recently, including confirmation of its name, Black Ops 2, along with a release date as well as some multiplayer information that we got a hold of earlier.

This time, YouTuber CoDInform was able to catch what looks to be Black Ops 2’s logo which we’ve included above as the featured image. Three reasons it could possibly be legitimate: First, it looks professional; Second, it was removed from the official Call of Duty website upon discovery; Third, if you look at the date in this image, 04.28.12, it happens to be the exact date of two years earlier that the original Black Ops reveal trailer was released.

On top of this, the original URL linking to this image read ‘http://www.callofduty.com/bo2/images,’ which happens to be a similar URL used for Modern Warfare 3 images:

If it does turn out to be fake, at least this one was rather well researched. So, props to whoever created it. If it is real, expect a reveal trailer of Black Ops 2 this month on the 28th!

What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below and don’t forget to follow MP1st on Twitter and Facebook for more Black Ops 2 news!

Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Off-Screen Footage From PAX

YouTuber Welchy963 was able to sneak some Battlefield 3: Close Quarters footage off the floor at this year’s PAX.

Here, you can see him playing on the same map that was shown in the latest Close Quarters gameplay trailer, Ziba Tower. You can notice the tight, close quarters, corridor fighting that DICE was obviously going for in this expansion of Battlefield 3.

We’ve yet to gather the rest of weapons that will be included in this DLC as they were not shown at PAX. Only seven out of the ten weapons have been revealed so far.

Nevertheless, checkout the footage below to get a glimpse of what Close Quarters is all about.

Ubisoft Massive Confirms Vehicles Will Not Be Present In Far Cry 3 Multiplayer

Ubisoft Massive Game Designer Daniel Berlin confirms that vehicles will not be present in the multiplayer of Far Cry 3.

This may come as a surprise to many Far Cry fans who’ve become used to vehicles having a larger role in the multiplayer of Far Cry 2. Daniel Berlin tells Platform32 why in a recent interview.

In case you’ve missed it, Ubisoft Massive recently released this brand new footage of Far Cry 3 multiplayer, including information of two games modes that will be available in FC3, Domination and Firestorm. You’ll notice in this footage that the multiplayer seems rather close quarters and action packed, something Ubisoft Massive was going for in this iteration. This, along with the type of team gameplay the team has been trying to promote, may have simply not left any room for vehicles in the multiplayer.

Berlin explains, “we tried to incorporate the vehicles in multiplayer but what we realized after a while was that it actually didn’t help the team play that we’re trying to push. It didn’t help the game play that we created.” He added that “what was best for the game was to actually keep vehicles out of multiplayer.”

What do you think? Does a vehicle-less Far Cry 3 multiplayer will make for better game play? Let us know in the comments below!

Halo 4 Rumor – Elite Not Returning, No Spawn Delays, and More Multiplayer Details

Information pertaining to the May issue of Game Informer has been leaked by Halo Waypoint forum user, How Is Your Day. This leak contains information concerning Halo 4 multiplayer.

According to the forum post, mild spoilers ahead:

Spartan Points

Spartan Points is the new currency system in Halo 4. They will buy things such as armor, armor abilities, Spartan Ops missions (see below), and some

Spartan Ops

From how it was described, think for Spartan Ops like Spec Ops from Modern Warfare but with a storyline. They will span out over several months, encouraging players to return to the game. Game Informer said that Spartan Ops will be comparable in scope and size to the in single-player storyline.

Note: Microsoft recently registered several ‘Spartan Ops’ domain names.

Why Reds Fight Blues

I think most of us probably guessed this, but reds fight blues and blues fight reds for training purposes. They fight in something called the UNSC Infinity. The UNSC Infinity is a 3km long ship sent into deep space on a mission. It contains a virtual reality sector that creates the multiplayer experience.

Sprint

So not only is sprint in the game, but it is a standard armor ability. You do not need to pick it up, it will always be available. You do not need to buy it with your Spartan Points, you will always have it equipped no matter what. So essentially, you can have two armor abilities.

Forerunner Vision

Ever wanted to be super man? Now you can! See through walls with your x-ray vision! I can’t say I hate this armor ability, I haven’t used it yet. I’m hoping it comes with its weaknesses and it discourages camping. Sorry guys, but camping in Halo 4 will not be a legitimate tactic.

Returning Armor Abilities

The hologram, jetpack, and active camo will make a return in Halo 4. It didn’t elaborate on the abilities, but you can probably assume they’ll be about the same.

Elites Not Returning to Multiplayer

Not much detail was given as to why elites will not see multiplayer combat, it was stated in a picture caption. The caption reads, “Competitive multiplayer focuses on the Spartan IVs. Elites will not be playable.

Grenades

Now the article itself did not talk about grenades, but I noticed in the picture the Spartan had 4 grenade options. I assume the plasma grenade will return as seen from an explosion in the picture and the frag grenade will most definitely return as seen by the Halo 4 first look video.

Firefight

Once again, no explanation why aside from a picture caption. The caption read, “Halo 4’s campaign is still playable with four players online (in reference to Spartan Ops, ensuring players that Spartan Ops will not replace the campaign coop experience). 343 Industries has no plans to include a dedicated Firefight mode. I’m torn on this, I don’t normally play firefight, but I feel like it is a standard necessary feature in the game after Halo 3: ODST introduced it.

Regicide

Regicide is a variation of free for all. I think it’s similar to VIP. Regicide, as stated by the article, “sets the leading scorer as the king. Every opponent that the king kills raises his bounty; other players have to kill the king to claim the reward.”

Distraction and Revenge Medals

Don’t feel bad anymore for not killing a single person in the game, you can get a medal for being a distraction! Oh, you just got killed and now you’re raging at that player? Calm down and get rewarded for hunting down the guy that just killed you!

Let me make it clear that I do not necessarily see these medals as bad. They just may reward people that don’t actually deserve one.

No More Weapon Camping

One the skills that separated veteran players from inexperienced players was the ability to time power weapons’ spawns. In Halo 4, this will be near impossible. Weapons drop down in drop pods at random locations around the map. Quoted from the article, “This gives the matches other focal points, and it also helps alleviate the advantage longtime players always used to have over newer recruits; the best weapons are not always going to be found at the same spawn locations.” Unless there is a distinguishable skill gap between players, I most definitely do not like this idea.

No More Respawn Delay

Immediately after you die, by tapping the X button you are sent back into the match. Now let’s contemplate why this might be bad. Let’s say Halo spawns are… not so great. A skilled player out BRs/DMRs/whatevers a unskilled player. Now that unskilled player can immediately respawn and find you before your shields even regenerate! I understand 343 is trying to speed up the game, but they must understand the consequences of instant spawns.

Joining In-Progress Games

So to solve the quitting problem, 343 implemented the ability to join games that are in-progress. My question is are we going to have the ability to search for games starting up instead? It infuriates me to join a game at the last possible second, not even offering me the chance to play.

While some were (and still are) sceptical that they were being trolled by the poster, the poster has uploaded this image of the magazine.

Over at NeoGAF, comments have been filling up concerning the new details. Frank O’connor, who works at 343 Industries, had this to say:

“There will be a podcast. Nerves will be soothed. Things explained. Items clarified.

I wouldn’t worry.

Storm before the calm.”

We can’t confirm that this is 100% legit, so take it with a grain of salt.

Gears of War 3 – Easter Weekend Event

We have new information regarding the upcoming Gears of War 3’s Easter Weekend event.

According to Epic Games senior multiplayer programmer Peter Knepely, Horde will be receiving the classic treatment this weekend, meaning no fortifications, no bonus objectives, no respawns and no lambent enemies. The multiplayer portion will also be receiving 2x XP, with a custom gametype titled ‘Raven Down 24/7’, in which it’s nothing but Gnasher Shotgun’s on, you guessed it, Raven Down. We saved the best for last. Beast Mode will be receiving custom beasts to choose from – you’ll also be hunting Easter bunnies.

No other information has been given at this time regarding what exactly ‘hunting Easter bunnies’ means or which custom beasts will make an appearance, but we’re sure it will be a hell of a lot of fun!

Don’t forget, in order to play Raven Down 24/7 you will need to pick up the latest map pack, Forces of Nature valued at 800 Microsoft Points. Dust off your discs and have some fun this holiday weekend blasting Locusts, or in this case, hunting Easter bunnies.

Arma 3 ‘Stratis’ Teaser and Animation Report

Bohemia Interactive has released a brand new teaser video of Arma 3. In this trailer you’ll get a glimpse of what’s been improved in Arma3 in terms of graphics and animations.

[youtube id=”DXIoEUq8YE8″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

Although you can’t get much of an idea of what’s been improved, the team has stated in a recent blog post that animations for facial, weapon reloading, and firing have all been improved. According to Vespa, who’s an animator working on Arma 3, the animations are ” better, faster, smoother and more authentic than ever before!”

He goes on to discuss new gameplay features such as jogging (not the same as running), diving, and even underwater combat. It seems that much has been improved on to offer a better experience for it’s players.

And on the subject on how weapons will be handled, Vespa stated:

“We also aim to improve weapon behaviour, which means tweaking recoil mechanics, precision and weapon sway to more properly reflect the different states of the shooter, factoring in fatigue and injury, for example. Our goal is to not only improve the feel of firing guns, but also make firefights flow as close to reality as possible. The latter will actually be a tough one to crack, and again we hope that the players of the Community Alpha can feed into this process.”

Arma 3 is set to release some time in  Q4 of 2012.

Thanks Chris for the tip!

BioWare Announces Free ME3 Multiplayer DLC: Resurgence Pack, Operation: Beachhead Begins This Weekend

This weekend seems to be a big one for BioWare. On top of another Mass Effect 3 multiplayer community event, brand new multiplayer DLC has been announced which will include new maps, weapons and characters. Oh, it’s also free.

In a message coming in from General Hackett himself, “allied forces have matched Krogan mercs and Batarians with Asari justicars for unconventional warfare. Their mission: to create resistance on Reaper-occupied planets to tie down local Reapers.” What this really means is that all who participate in Operation: Beachhead across all platforms this weekend, including the PS3, will be granted a +25% XP bonus starting from 6PM PST Thursday April 5th, to 5AM PST Tuesday April 10th.

The recent pattern of events imply that these community affairs will take place on a weekly basis. Last weekend initiated Operation: Raptor, while the weekend before that saw Operation: Fortress, and the weekend before that, Operation: Goliath.

Funny BioWare should mention Krogan, Batarians and Asari as these races seem to be the stars of their recently announced, upcoming multiplayer DLC: Resurgence Pack.

Dropping on April 10th for Xbox 360 and PC worldwide and for PlayStation 3 owners on April 10th in North American and April 11th in Europe, the Resurgence Pack will include 2 brand new maps, 3 new weapons and 6 new characters. The best part about this DLC, you ask? It’s absolutely free. Check them out below along with the recently released announcement trailer! (Click on images for a bigger size.)

Maps:

Firebase Condor
Firebase Hydra

Weapons:

New toys to play with!

Characters:

Batarians, Geth and Krogan. Oh my!

According to BioWare Blog’s FAQ, these new maps will be playable immediately after downloading while the weapons and characters will be available rewards inside Reinforcement Packs. Additionally, each character will have their own unique abilities and loadouts.

Check out the announcement trailer below to see these maps, weapons and characters in action! Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments below! What new character/class are you excited to try out?

Not only does this film, fittingly titled “500,” feature emotional imagery accompanied by touching music, it almost tells a story – a story of strolling through the planes of Caspian Border, witnessing the destruction of Seine Crossing and walking through the burning wreckage of Tehran Highway.

All cheese aside, this Battlefield 3 clip is worth a watch. Congratulations, d0n7bl1nk!
