Call of Duty Endowment Warrior Pack Gives You a Veteran-Inspired Skin; Twitch Drops Revealed

Call of Duty Endowment is back again this year, which means players have an opportunity to help out veterans in need! But this year is a little different, as not only will you get to help the troops out, but you’ll also get to play as one.

One of the great deeds that Activision has done with Call of Duty ever since 2009 was their Call of Duty Endowment program, a non-profit foundation that has assisted US and UK veterans in finding jobs, amongst other needs. Every year, Call of Duty has offered Endowment packages for purchases, with all the funding going to charities. Since then, the program has helped 125,000 veterans find jobs, securing their future and their families.

However, this year is a bit different for players, as not only will they get the traditional perks of buying the pack, but they’ll also get a special operator skin inspired by a real-life veteran. Dubbed the Call of Duty Endowment: The Warrior Pack, details on everything included (via COD Blog) below, as well as the story behind the veteran skin.

The Warrior Pack includes:

  • “Koa King” Operator Skin
  • “Dethroned” SMG Weapon Blueprint
  • “6-Karat Kicker” Marksman Rifle Weapon Blueprint
  • “Island Styling” Vehicle Skin
  • “Bone Skewer” Weapon Charm
  • “Lion Pride” Animated Emblem
  • “Triple Bone Trident” Weapon Sticker
  • “Rolling Mane” Animated Calling Card
  • 1 Hour Double Player XP Token
  • 1 Hour Double Weapon XP Token

The eldest of eight, Benjamin F. was born in American Samoa, surrounded by water in the “Cradle of Polynesia,” where he learned to hunt, swim, endure the elements, and thrive. At a young age, it fell on him to provide for his siblings and protect them. It was a responsibility he accepted with courage and that yielded accountability, selflessness, and self-discipline — skills that would serve him well throughout his career as a United States Navy SEAL.

At age 10, the change of being uprooted from his island home and relocated to the Midwest provided him the opportunity to diversify, grow, and develop. His family moved a dozen times before he finished high school, forcing him to continually adapt and evolve. His performance as an athlete became social currency, his life thus far appearing tailor-made for the Teams. But the adversity of BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training) is something no amount of living can prepare one for, and a severe injury cut his experience short the first time through. With perseverance, he recovered, trained, reentered the program in a new class, and graduated.

Over his 16 years of service, he deployed to Europe, Africa, Afghanistan, and Iraq. One of his specialties was reconnaissance, where he honed his instincts and experience to ensure the safety of his fellow SEALs before they arrived on-target. During his career, he received two Bronze Stars, both with Valor; the Purple Heart; the Navy Commendation Medal; and the Navy Achievement Medal. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer.

These won’t be the only perks, however, as there is a “true Legend” event running from November 15-22, that allows you to earn free drops simply by playing and equipping the Koa King operator skin.

  • “Emblematic” Sticker
  • 30 Minute Double Player XP Token
  • “Always Forward”  Large Decal
  • 45 Minute Double Weapon XP Token
  • “Got Your Back” Weapon Charm
  • “Stacked” Large Decal
  • “Anthem” Emblem
  • “Flanked” Calling Card
  • 60 Minute Double Battle Pass XP Token
  • “Brave Stripes” Weapon Camo

Not bad of perks, especially since it all goes to a good cause.

Sledgehammer Denies Claims That Modern Warfare 3 Was Developed in 16 Months; Says It Was “Years in the Making”

A new report has surfaced claiming that Modern Warfare 3 was developed in roughly 16 months, with it initially pitched as DLC. Similar allegations had surfaced prior to the announcement of Modern Warfare 3, with Activision dismissing them, and it seems to be the same case here, with Sledgehammer refuting the claims.

Last year, rumors began circulating that the next Call of Duty would indeed be a follow-up to Modern Warfare 2. At the time, many were shocked, considering that sequels aren’t seen until after the next game in tradition. Things got even more crazier when rumors suggested it was merely DLC, with Activision skipping out on a premium game for the first time in a year. The company soon came out to clarify all this, suggesting otherwise. It seems those reports are surfacing once again due to the poor reception around Modern Warfare 3, as Bloomberg has posted a detailed story about the harsh development time that Sledgehammer Games had undergone to deliver this year’s iteration.

“The process was hurried because this year’s game was conceived to fill a gap in the release schedule following the delay of another Call of Duty title previously planned for 2023. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was originally pitched to staff at Foster City, California-based developer Sledgehammer Games as an expansion to last year’s title, but it morphed into a full sequel during development, Bloomberg earlier reported.”

They go on to say that multiple sources, both current and former employees, were under the impression that they were developing DLC for MW2, rather than a full sequel, which was told to them later.

After Vanguard, the team had pitched for a futuristic setting, Call of Duty, which would be set in the same era as Advanced Warfare, which got shelved in favor of a Modern-era Call of Duty.

This initially led to the team working on a Modern Warfare spinoff campaign set in Mexico that would have been more attainable in the short amount of development time they were given. That, unfortunately was changed when Activision execs stepped in and forced a reboot.

“For the first few months of the project, which was codenamed Jupiter, the story was conceived as a smaller-scale Modern Warfare spinoff set in Mexico that would be more achievable on a short timeline than the usual globe-trotting escapades of a full new campaign. But in the summer of last year, Activision executives rebooted that story, and told the developers that instead they would be making a direct sequel to Modern Warfare II centering on the villain Vladimir Makarov and featuring missions all across the world.”

The report claims that Sledgehammer Games took 16 months to develop the game we have now. Although players are taking a massive liking to the multiplayer changes, despite still feeling like DLC, its campaign is another story as it has received some heavy criticisms from fans and critics.

Sledgehammer Games released a statement on X from its studio head, Aaron Halon, which says they’ve spent years on this vision, and anyone saying other is “not true.”

“Statement from Aaron Halon, studio head, SHG. “We’re incredibly proud of Modern Warfare III – both the full game experience at launch and the upcoming year of content we have planned for the community. On behalf of the extremely talented team across Sledgehammer Games and our partner studios with whom we’ve collaborated on development, this has been a labor of love to lead the first ever back-to-back sequel in Call of Duty. We cannot wait to see our community’s reaction to all that the entire game has to offer, across Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies.

From the start of development, we have all been laser focused on creating the next groundbreaking Call of Duty game. Long before we wrapped up our previous game, we heard loud and clear from fans about the desire to stay and play together for longer within the same series. And that’s what we’ve delivered – the first true sequel in franchise history. It is also why we added features like Carry Forward for the first time to honor the investment our players have made in the Modern Warfare series.

We’re proud to be the team to lead the way on Modern Warfare III. We have worked hard to deliver on this vision which has been years in the making. Anything said to the contrary is simply not true – this is our game and we cannot wait to play it online with all of you.”

It’s hard to know what’s true, and until someone speaks out about it publicly, we likely will never know the truth behind all this.

Still, with the studio and the rest of the Call of Duty teams now under Microsoft, it hopefully means that the teams have more flexibility, allowing them more time for releases rather than being forced to make them annually, as we’ve seen.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is now available worldwide on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Stay tuned for our review, which should be in the next few weeks.

Modern Warfare 3 MTZ-556 Loadout: Best Attachments and Perks

The next Call of Duty is here, and there are over 100 weapons to choose from. To help you start racking up kills, we’ve got a Modern Warfare 3 MTZ-556 loadout that’s sure to give you an edge. Seeing as how the MTZ-556 is one of the first weapons available in the game’s preset loadouts, you can start leveling it up before you unlock custom loadouts and the gun itself at level 12.

Here’s our recommended attachments for the MTZ-556:

Modern Warfare 3 MTZ-556 Loadout and Best Attachments:

MTZ-556 Attachments

  • Muzzle: Shadowstrike Suppressor
  • Barrel: MTZ Drifter Heavy Long Barrel
  • Underbarrel: Bruen Heavy Support Grip
  • Rear Grip: Bruen TR-24 Assault Grip
  • Magazine: 50 Round Drum
    • OR Preferred Optic

The MTZ-556 is already pretty fast in terms of Assault Rifles, so this build focuses on giving the gun a little boost in range and accuracy. The Barrel, Rear Grip, and Underbarrel all help with aim stability and recoil control, and the barrel emphasizes bullet velocity & range as well. The suppressor doesn’t provide any bonuses, but it also doesn’t provide any cons, making it useful now that dots are back on the minimap.

We’ve included a larger magazine to reduce reload frequency, but if you’d prefer, you can swap this out for your favorite optic. 1x optics no longer reduce ADS speed in Modern Warfare 3, which means swapping the larger magazine out for one will boost your ADS speed by a fair amount.

MTZ-556 Loadout Perks

MTZ-556 Loadout

In terms of most of your loadout, it’s dealer’s choice. In terms of perks, however, we believe that there are a few that work well with this MTZ-556 build:

  • Quick-Grip Gloves: These will help you switch to your secondary faster should you burn through a magazine mid-firefight. The downside of the larger magazine is its increased reload time, so being able to switch to your other weapon in a panic is useful.
  • Running Sneakers: These are all about boosting your Tac-Sprint duration and refresh rate, which will ensure that you can still move fast even with this slightly heavier build.
  • EOD Padding: Reducing damage from explosives and fire is always good just in case you can’t get out of the way in time. This is a safe pick for most loadouts.

And there you have it! Obviously, feel free to tool with it as you please, but we’ve found this build works pretty well.

Modern Warfare 3 is out now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Shoutout to WarzoneLoadout for their MTZ-556 build!

Modern Warfare 3 Community Calling for Gaia Skin to Be Removed, as It Promotes Pay-to-Win

Despite visibility previously tweaked in the Call of Duty Warzone Season 6 patch, the Gaia operator skin is again in the spotlight, as the Modern Warfare 3 community calls for its removal due to it practically being pay-to-win.

The Gaia Skin, a skin for the Nova Operator, is again under fire. For those who remember when it was initially launched last month, many in the community complained about its visibility due to the nature of the skin being tree-like, comparable to Groot from the Marvel Universe. It received harsh criticism, to the point that players have called it pay-to-win due to needing the Battle Pass to earn it and the skin being nearly invisible in some environments. That was eventually addressed (to a degree) in the Season 6 Warzone patch, though with the launch of Modern Warfare 3, the Gaia skin is once again a problem.

This skin needs a nerf, it is so OP in estate and wasteland. Literally invisible
by inModernWarfareIII

Seriously, Remove this skin now enough is enough with this Pay 2 win
byu/korge23 inModernWarfareIII

I can attest to the complaints, as I’ve played plenty of matches on Wasteland, where the skin would almost be impossible to spot. Since it can be partially seen through, and the color schemes are brown and muddy, common in outdoor maps, you can understand why it’s hard to see. We took the skin into private split-screen matches to show this effect.

If that green dot weren’t in that second photo, you’d probably never guess where the second player was. Even in the first photo, they’re hard to see. You can begin to understand why many are calling it pay-to-win, as while it doesn’t make you a better player, it does hide you from others, letting you get the drop on them without them realizing it. This skin is definitely up there with the original Rose Skin, which was also criticized for visibility until it got a proper fix.

Even if the skin isn’t removed, Sledgehammer NEEDS to address it. Call of Duty, in general, has to stop introducing such skins and other pay-to-win items. Let’s hope Sledgehammer is listening to all the feedback given by the community thus far. We’ll continue to monitor the skin should a nerf come.

Modern Warfare 3 is officially available starting today.

Naughty Dog’s Head of Technology Departs Studio After 17 Years, Successor Named

After 17 years, Naughty Dog’s Head of Technology, Christian Gyrling is leaving the studio, with a fellow colleague of his taking his position.

Naughty Dog made the surprise announcement on X, confirming Gyrling departure. Travis Mcintosh, a 19-year veteran at Naughty Dog, will be filling Gyrling’s position at the studio.

“Our head of technology Christian Gyrling has decided to leave Naughty Gog after an amazing 17-year career at our studio. We’re grateful for his many contributions to the studio, our games, and his teammates. We will miss Christian Greatly and wish him the best of luck on where his path leads next. Travis Mcintosh, a 19-year veteran at Naughty Dog, will succeed Christian as head of technology.”

Christian Gyrling started his journey at Naughty Dog as a programmer in 2006, moving up the ranks to eventually Vice President in 2020. He transitioned into the Head of Technology back in July of this year. Christian has yet to release any comment on either X or LinkedIn on where he might be going next.

Travis Mcintosh, who has been at the studio since 2004 as Programming Director, will now be the studio’s Head of Technology.  No statement has been posted by him either on the matter.

This news comes at a rather interesting time, as the industry is experiencing widespread layoffs, with Naughty Dog reportedly having some, too. While it’s common for people to leave a company after years of commitment, one does have to wonder if this is just a coincidence or if there’s something more to it. Many key figures from PlayStation, including CEO Jim Ryan, who’s retiring next year, and Head of Production, Connie Booth (reportedly fired) are among the few top figures to leave the company, and Bungie was also hit with layoffs recently.

Let’s hope we’re nearing the end of departures and layoffs for the gaming industry.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Wins Ultimate Game of the Year Award During the 2023 Golden Joystick Awards

It’s awards season in the game industry, and to kick it all off, The Golden Joystick Awards has just held their yearly event, crowning the ultimate game of the year award to Baldur’s Gate 3.

The competition was fierce this year’s Golden Joystick, with the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Alan Wake 2, and so many others competing for the Ultimate Game of the Year, but of course, there can only be one winner. And who was the winner? Unsurprisingly, it was none other than Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3! In addition to the Ultimate Game of the Year, Baldur’s Gate 3 also managed to snag four other awards for the game, and two for the studio and performer: Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, Best Game Community, Best PC Game of the Year, Best Supporting Performer, and Studio of the Year.

The complete list of Golden Joystick Winners (via Gamesrader) can be found below.

Congratulations to everyone on the list, and major applause for Larian Studios with Baldur’s Gate 3. We suspect this won’t be the only Game of the Year award they take this holiday season, though the bigger question is, will they be able to conquer The Game Awards this December? I guess we’ll know soon enough!

Alan Wake 2 Thermos Stock to Be Replenished in 2024

In a matter of seconds, the Alan Wake 2 “Oh Deer Diner Thermos” sold out on the iam8bit shop, prompting fans to rush to social media sites with anger and even bugging Remedy employees over the whole situation. Though many are in their right to be disappointed by the lack of stock, Remedy’s Communications Director did address the situation while confirming that more supply is on its way.

Taking to Reddit, Remedy’s Communications Director, Thomas Puhah has confirmed that more Alan Wake 2 Thermos are on the way, and that

Not sure why the anger outside of not getting one, that I can understand. I’m dealing with that all the time.

People were wondering why the thermos sold out so fast. My answer was that usually (I’m theorizing) bots are used, hence things sell out so fast, since I don think most people realize that tends to happen at concert ticket buying, Supreme, etc. I dont run the iam8bit backend, but I know they have pretty good protection against bots.

If we didn’t care about fans, we wouldn’t have done the thermos in the first place. Neither us or Airam had any real idea of how many could be sold. Plenty more are on their way in 2024 so no need to go for reseller prices.

Puha goes on to further explain that the means of distribution was handed off to iam8bit to improve over the previous one-man operation.

To me, its normal that high demand stuff is bought by bots. I dont like it, but I see it all the time and its frustrating to lose out when you do things manually.

I dont run the iam8bit store, not my place to tell them how they run it.

Proper handling to me was giving the remaining stock to iam8bit, professionals at this, unlike my one man operation, so I thought that was at least a good move. Compared to only being able to buy a thermos from VPD in Finland by emailing them which was the case a while ago. Surely we agree that we improved on that.

Puha further expressed in the thread that he’s not happy that users were scalping the Thermos and reselling them at outrageous prices, recommending that those wanting one to wait until the stock has been replenished, which should be coming next year.

I myself tried to buy one (and failed), though I’m with Puha here. Scalpers will always be a major problem, and it’s unfortunate that the thermos may have sold out due to them and bots. The fanbase is in their right to be angry over it, but beyond that, such as attacking members of the studio, that is never okay to do.

There’s solace in knowing now that they do plan on restocking them, so fingers crossed the next time something is done to help combat scalpers.

Modern Warfare 3 and MW2 Update for November 10 Fixes Loading Issues and More

Sledgehammer Games has pushed out the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and MW2 (given both games share the same launcher now with Call of Duty HQ) update for November 10, and this is a server-side patch that aims to fix issues associated with loading the game via the launcher.

Modern Warfare 3 and MW2 Update for November 10 Patch Notes:

Here’s the announcement from Sledgehammer Games via the official Call of Duty Updates Twitter account:

📢 #MW2 #MW3

We’ve released a small update that contains the following bug fixes:

• Fixed an issue where loading into MW2 from MW3 could result in longer load times than intended
• Fixed an issue that could cause a crash when entering the Weapons tab when cross-launching from MW3

Alongside today’s patch, Sledgehammer announced that Karachi has been temporarily been pulled from the Cutthroat game mode due to mixed teams in initial spawns. In other modes, various maps have been pulled, too. Check out the Modern Warfare 3 known issues being investigated by the studio (via the official Sledgehammer Games Trello board):

Multiplayer – Know Issues:

  • Karachi has been temporarily removed from Cutthroat due to mixed teams in initial spawns
  • Quarry, Rundown, and Scrapyard are temporarily removed from Hardpoint due to spawn issues
  • Minimap red dots do not indicate player elevation
  • Bombsite A can be planted from an unintended location on Terminal Search and Destroy
  • After Infil, Field of View can be set higher than expected
  • Upon consuming a 2XP Token, the UI often gets stuck at “Activating Token”

That’s about it. We’re expecting a client-side patch to be released soon, and we won’t be surprised if one drops this coming week.

Delta Force: Hawk Ops Gameplay Shows Off Large Scale Battles Across Extraction Mode

Delta Force: Hawk Ops recently held a pre-alpha test in China, and while a majority of us are still waiting for the test to come stateside, TiMi Studio Group has left us with some fresh new gameplay for Delta Force: Hawk Ops, showing off some large scale warfare in their extraction mode, Hazard Operation.

Delta Force: Hawk Ops Gameplay – Hazard Operation | Extraction Mode

Just from the snippets of gameplay, I have to say that it’s looking rather good for being in pre-alpha. Of course, we won’t really know the state of the game until we get our hands on it, which, for those unaware, the studio is offering just that with pre-registration available for the 2024 Q1 testing from their website.

Hazard Operation is just one of the two confirmed modes for the game. In it, players will squad up and battle it out with other teams and/or AI-controlled enemies. Expect random events across the map, with PvE-focused missions and PvP encounters.

In addition to Hazard Operation, Delta Force: Hawk Ops will also have a PvP large-scale mode dubbed Havoc Warfare that will feature large teams battling it out on a massive map, with vehicles and all.

There’s no target release date at the moment, though it will eventually come to PlayStation and Xbox platforms, and of course PC.

New Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris Rewards and Map This Week November 10

Destiny‘s Trials of Osiris weekly PvP mode is back this Friday with a new map and rewards. If you’re wondering about the current rotation, we’ve got you covered: MP1st’s new Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris rewards and map this week November 10, 2023 post lists down all that information in full below.

New Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris Rewards This Week November 10, 2023:

Trials of Osiris Map:

Javelin-4

Rewards

  • Reputation Rank 4: Upgrade Module (2)
  • Reputation Rank 7: Enhancement Prism (3)
  • Reputation Rank 10: Trials Weapon (Changes for each rank reset)
  • Reputation Rank 13: Upgrade Module (2)
  • Reputation Rank 16: Trials Weapon (Changes for each rank reset)
  • Flawless Reward: Astral Horizon (Adept)

Reputation System, Trials Engrams, and Adept Farming

Win individual rounds within each match to gain Trials reputation. The amount of reputation you gain increases with each round you’ve won on your card. Earn enough reputation, and you’ll be able to claim a Trials Engram from Saint-14! This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Your reputation increases after every match completion, based on the number of round-wins on your card, regardless of the result of that match itself (win or lose, 0-5 or 5-4).

Once you have gone Flawless, keep playing! Every win you achieve while at the 7-win level, even if you lose your Flawless, has a chance to drop bonus Trials Engrams, adept weapons, prisms, and even Ascendant Shards. There is no penalty for losing once you’ve made it to the Lighthouse!

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone Flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

Passages

Name Perk Cost
Passage of Ferocity Your third match win grants a bonus win. 15 Legendary Shards
Passage of Mercy Forgives one loss per run. Forgives a second loss if you have not yet been flawless this week. 15 Legendary Shards
Passage of Wealth Increased reputation from match wins on a ticket. 25 Legendary Shards
Passage of Confidence Grants bonus rewards from Flawless Chest. 50 Legendary Shards

When does Xûr visit?

Xûr visits every Friday at 17:00 UTC and departs at Weekly Reset (Tuesday 17:00 UTC). If you would like to see all the live conversions of Time Zones, please follow this link here.

Remnant 2 DLC Archetype “The Ritualist” Joins the Roster November 14

The upcoming Remnant 2 expansion The Awakened King will feature a new DLC Archetype. This Archetype, known as “The Ritualist,” boasts potent magical abilities and a mastery of status effects that can aid you in your fight.

Interested? Take a look at the Ritualist’s trailer below:

Here are all of the new Archetype’s abilities:

Remnant 2 Ritualist Abilities

  • Vile – Their Prime Perk, “Vile”, makes enemies more susceptible to Status Damage and spreads their statues to nearby enemies upon death.
  • Eruption – Using “Eruption”, the Ritualist detonates nearby enemies and adds insult to injury by dealing bonus damage to those already suffering from Status Effects.
  • Miasma – To thin the herd, unleashing “Miasma” instantly applies Bleeding, Burning, Overloaded, and Corroded to all enemies within range.
  • Deathwish – Lastly, “Deathwish” curses the Ritualist themselves. It forgoes standard healing and causes constant health drain but grants a heavy damage buff and substantial lifesteal.

The Ritualist will be unlockable through gameplay, though developer Gunfire Games doesn’t want to spoil the surprise. Until the DLC is out, the secret to unlocking the new Archetype will be kept under wraps.

This character looks fun to play. The magic-heavy gameplay mixed with the frenetic gunfire nature of Remnant 2 is sure to be an engaging pairing. The DLC will also feature new areas, items, and bosses to help freshen up the gameplay, so all in all, it’s a great package.

Remnant 2: The Awakened King DLC will be available November 14 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder Review – A Wonderful Adventure

Everybody knows who Mario is, with him easily being one of the most recognizable fictional characters on the planet. The Mario game series has evolved in numerous ways over the years, including several spin-offs and sequels. There are many different sectors of the franchise as well, including the 3D platformers, the sports titles, the party games, and more, but the most iconic of them all is still the 2D platformer that took the series to the next level with Super Mario Bros. Now, years later, after multiple sequels to the original and the change to the sometimes controversial New Super Mario Bros. series, the franchise has gone back to its roots yet again, while also moving things in some directions the series has never seen in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Return to 2D

Mario has always been a colorful and fun franchise, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder continues this tradition with one of the plumber’s most lively adventures to date. The character models have more life than any of the 2D games have ever had and are right up there with the best 3D character animations in the series. Whether Mario and his friends are running, grabbing a moving rail, or just standing still, you can see the level of detail and care that the developers put into the animations that move as fluidly as ever.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is, at its core, a traditional Mario 2D platformer where you travel around a world map to select stages. Like some of the more modern entries, though, some areas of this world map are open to where you can explore a bit and choose the order of some of the levels. This adds a little variety to playthroughs for players while also allowing a player to move onto a different stage if they are struggling at one particular level most of the time. The world map is made up of a central island known as the Petal Isles that branch off into the six other worlds that Mario and friends have to travel to to recover Wonder Seeds and eventually the Royal Seed for each world as well. There is also a Special World for you to unlock and explore as well.

As expected from the Mario series, the worlds are split into familiar locations such as desert stages, water stages, and, of course, volcanic stages. There are some other fun styles mixed in as well, including the Fungi Mines world. The stages within each world greatly differ a lot of the time too, offering so much variety in their design to the point where nothing ever feels stale in the game, even upon replay.

It wouldn’t be a new Mario game without some sort of new power-ups, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder delivers in that department. The most prominent of the new power-ups is the Elephant, which has been front and center for the game’s marketing. This has some unique uses beyond the ability to knock enemies with its trunk, such as holding water. The Bubble Flower operates similarly to the Fire Flower but instead shoots out bubbles that can destroy enemies and also be used to be bounced on. Lastly, the Drill power-up is very useful as you can pop into the ground or the ceiling and move around to avoid enemies and also reach areas that would not be reachable otherwise.

Going on a Trip

What completely turns Super Mario Bros. Wonder on its head from past games are the previously mentioned Wonder Flowers that you can activate within most stages. Touching one of these essentially takes Mario and company on a drug trip where everything goes absolutely bonkers. These vary by level, but some examples include having pipes coming to life and moving around, the game turning into basically a top-down game where Mario walks on what would have been the background, and many more. You even get to turn into a Goomba in a couple of them, which is handled very differently from how the Goombas work in Super Mario Odyssey. I was also extremely excited to come across each Wonder Flower because I couldn’t wait to see what creative and wacky ideas the developers came up with for that level.

Typical stages in Super Mario Bros. Wonder feature two Wonder Seeds, three 10-Flower Coins for you to collect, and a flag pole at the end for you to get Wonder status on by jumping onto the very top. Completing each level almost always provides you with one Wonder Seed, while the other is obtained through touching a Wonder Flower and reaching the Wonder Seed in the given timespan. There are a select few stages in the game that also have a third hidden Wonder Seed to collect by finding a secret exit. These also can unlock new paths with extra stages too, so they are very worth searching for. The game does not let you know which levels have these hidden exits, though, so you have to learn what types of signs to look for to find them all.

There are also stages based around one of the game’s new mechanics, known as badges. Every character can be equipped with one badge at a time that you can earn or purchase in the game that gives special abilities. Some of these give bonuses like starting each stage with a Super Mushroom, while others are abilities that you do not have access to without having the badge equipped, such as an extra spin jump or a vine you can shoot out to grab walls. For these badges, there are two stages each that let you test that particular badge out and get it in return for completing the first time.

The badge skills all culminate in the game’s ultimate challenge at the end with The Final-Final Test Badge Marathon, which is the game’s final stage that you unlock after doing everything. In this stage, you have to utilize all of the main skill badges in succession, with checkpoints found after every three or four only. While this isn’t as difficult as some past final stages in Mario games like Champion’s Road from Super Mario 3D World, it presents a solid challenge that likely will cause you to lose a good number of lives.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder also has stages in each world that require you to collect a certain number of Wonder Seeds from that specific world to unlock. These typically are the castle-type stages you come to expect, with a boss fight at the end of most of them. There are also Bowser’s airship stages that pop up along your journey that also culminate with what can be considered a boss fight.

While Super Mario Bros. Wonder does pretty much everything right, the boss fights are easily the weakest link in the overall experience. Besides the final fight against Bowser, which is handled differently and was quite enjoyable, the previous boss fights come down to one of two types. The castle stages have you square off against Bowser Jr. in a series of jumping on his head, waiting for him to spin around, and then jumping on it a few more times. The only difference between these is they add some different elements, such as water or clones, to make it more difficult.

The Bowser’s airship fights consist of a conveyor belt with a few obstacles that you can run right past for the most part and get to a robotic Bowser contraption that all you have to do is jump on top of and ground pound one time to defeat. It’s disappointing that more time wasn’t put into these boss fights to make them much more memorable, like those found in Super Mario World and Yoshi’s Island, but they end up being just about the only underwhelming part of the game as a whole.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder Review

Super Mario Bros. Wonder also lets you play as not just Mario but a whole cast of 11 other characters that has to be the largest playable roster for a 2D Mario game outside of something like Super Mario Maker. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, the two colored Toads, and Toadette all play the same, so do not expect variation in abilities like in Super Mario Bros. 2. There are then four Yoshi as well as Nabbit to choose from that essentially serve as the game’s easy mode, as they usually cannot take damage. I do wish that one Yoshi was available without nerfing the difficulty because I do enjoy the gameplay with Yoshi but do not care for the difficulty drop when using one of them.

One major element of the New Super Mario Bros. series that got a lot of criticism was the style of music that was found in each of them, really not allowing any of them to set themselves apart from the others stylistically. Super Mario Bros. Wonder instead eschews this for a brand new soundtrack that is one of the jolliest in the franchise. The music really helps to capture the zany nature of this game, especially when activating a Wonder Flower. Even though the music is typically the same in these sections, it is a perfect fit for these hallucination-like sections, which keep the music throughout the rest of the game very fresh.

Verdict

As hard as it is to believe, it has been over a decade since the last traditional Mario 2D platformer that isn’t a re-release. Clearly, Nintendo has been biding their time as they have now given us one of the greatest entries in the series to date with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Outside of the lackluster boss battles, everything else in this game is superb and truly exemplifies what a great Mario game should be. While some people may be awaiting a follow-up to Odyssey, Super Mario Bros. Wonder rejuvenates the 2D side of the series with a game that is perfect for people of all ages and should not be overlooked in the twilight years of the Nintendo Switch.

Score: 9.5/10

Pros:

  • Lively animations that pop
  • Great level variety
  • Excellent new power-ups and badges
  • Trippy Wonder Flower segments
  • Jolly music

Cons:

  • Underwhelming boss battles, minus the final boss
  • Yoshi is only playable as an easy mode

Modern Warfare 3 Best Console Settings – Controller, Aiming, Graphics, and More

Modern Warfare 3 is now officially available worldwide! But before you start shooting it out with other players, you may want to adjust some of your settings. Lucky you, we have a guide for you as we walk you through Modern Warfare 3 best console settings.

Modern Warfare 3 Best Console Settings

Controller

Most options are fine at default.

  • Button Layout – Tactical – This swaps the melee and crouch bindings around, so instead of the circle being melee, it now becomes R3. The benefit is that you’ll likely crouch and slide more often than using the melee, and with this setup, you don’t have to move your finger off to perform it constantly.
  • Controller Vibration – Off – Like in any online shooter, this is usually more distracting than helpful. Turn it on for the campaign, though, since you can take your time there versus fighting players in live combat.
  • Trigger Effects (DualSense) – Off – Again, more of a distraction. You want to be able to push the trigger buttons as quickly as possible, and having this on means longer presses.
  • Deadzones
    • Sticks: MW3 allows you to test deadzones, and if you are suffering from controller drift, you can see that happen in realtime in these settings. The minimum should be as low as possible, but if you notice the sticks moving without touching them, raise whichever stick until it starts moving. This will combat the stick drift.
    • L2 and R2 Deadzones – Keep these as low as possible.

Aiming

Keep most options at default.

  • Horizontal and Vertical Sensitivity – By default, each stick is set to 4, which, in my opinion, is too low. Ace suggests going to 8, but I recommend trying out 6-8. I found 7 the best for me.
  • Tactical Stance Multiplayer – .80-1.0
  • Aim Response Curve Type – Dynamic or Standard
  • Custom Sensitivity Zoom (Based on Ace)
    • Low Zoom – 0.75
    • 2X-3X Zoom – 0.75
    • 4X-5X Zoom – 0.75
    • 6X-7X Zoom – 1.10
    • 8X-9X Zoom – 1.10
    • High Zoom – 1.10
  • Aim Assist – Default or Black Ops – Ace recommends not using the other two due to the lack of rotational aim assist.

Gameplay

Keep most options on default.

  • Slide/Dive Behavior – Tap to Slide is the default, but you can change this to slide only if you don’t want to use diving. It should minimize slide delay for slide only.
  • Parachute Auto-Deploy – Off
  • Quick Detonation C4 – Group is the default, but if you want more control over denotation you can choose one by one.
  • Ping Wheel Delay – Short.

Graphics

  • On-Demand Texture Streaming – On, though off for those with a slow internet connection.
  • World Motion Blur – Off
  • Weapon Motion Blur – Off
  • Film Grain – 0.0
  • Depth of Field – Off
  • FidelityFX Cas Strength – 50-70
  • 120 HZ Refresh Rate – On – If you have a monitor or TV that can support it, use it.
  • Field of View – 100-110; anything less, and you are missing information; anything more, and things might be a bit disoriented.
  • Inverted Flashbang – On – Instead of your screen flashing white, it flashes black. It’s easier on the eyes.
  • Specator Cam – Game Perspective
  • Brightness – 45-55%, depending gon your monitor/TV. Adjust accordingly to the image.

Audio

Keep most options at default.

  • Gameplay Music – 0 -You want to be able to hear as much as you can during gameplay, so turning this off helps.
  • Voice Chat – If you don’t want to use it, turn it off.
  • Juggernaut Music – Off
  • War Tracks As A Passenger – Off

Interface

Keep most at default.

  • Mini Map Shape – Square – Gives you more of the map to look at over the round mini map.
  • Horizontal Compass – Off – The mini map exists, and you will probably use that over this. The fewer things on the HUD the better.
  • Telemetry – These options will help you determine if you have connection issues or the servers.
    • Server Latency – On
    • Packet Loss – On

Going back up, there is a color customization option. If you want something more vibrant in colors, I recommend going here and changing the following.

  • Color Filter – Filter 2 – This filter is as close to the colors as the game itself has. All the other filters alter the floors to look different than how they should be. Filter 2 maintains the same color and brightens them up.
  • Color Filter Target – Both – Affects UI and in-game
  • World Intensity – 100

Here’s a comparison of the filter on versus off. It’s not a major difference, but I do think the game looks better with the filter 2 option and intensity maxed out. Pay attention to the right side of the screen to see the difference.

DualSense Edge and Other Pro Controllers

If you’re using a pro controller, such as the DualSense Edge or Xbox Series Elite, then I recommend mapping the back two buttons to jump and slide. You can switch the control back to where R3 is to melee. This setup allows you to maintain your fingers on each button outside of reloading and switching weapons. If your controller supports four-button mapping, map all the right-side face buttons to them.

Much of the information listed here can be found in Xclusive Ace’s video, though there are some options I do touch upon that he does skip out on.

Lords of the Fallen Change Character Appearance In-Game Being Worked on by Devs, Out Sometime This Year

One of the most requested features by the Lords of the Fallen community will come to reality before 2023 is over, as HexWorks has confirmed that the Lords of the Fallen change character appearance in-game feature is being worked on.

This was mentioned by the studio as part of today’s big title update.

By popular demand, while it wasn’t included on the initial roadmap released, we’re happy to announce work has begun to allow to re-customize your character’s appearance in-game, currently scheduled to release this side of the New Year. This feature will come with its own mini-quest to unlock it.

While the studio didn’t mark this feature in the recently released roadmap for the action-RPG, it’s a good thing to hear it is being worked on, and will be out before the year is over. HexWorks has been quite steady in patching the game when it comes to bug fixes and improvements, and let’s hope this trend continues.

Lords of the Fallen has already surpassed over one million units sold in just a few days. If you haven’t played the game yet, go read our review here where our own PCM states, “The Umbral mechanic has brought something new to the table, but it’s a shame visits to the other side are limited. Hexworks set a high bar for themselves, and while they didn’t quite reach the heights they were going for, they should be commended for what they have accomplished.”

Valve Working on Several Games Geared Towards Steam Deck; Don’t Expect Steam Deck 2 Soon

It looks like Valve may be ramping up their game development, as they’ve confirmed that several games are in the works for the current Steam Deck models while also talking about the potential of Steam Deck 2.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Steam Deck product designer Greg Coomer discussed why they didn’t have any software lined up to show the new OLED Steam Deck.

“There is work like that going on at Valve but we’re not debuting a piece of content that is tailored to the OLED screen,”

“I think even when we shipped the first version of Steam Deck it was surprising to a lot of people that we didn’t really orient a lot of our own games – or create a new game – specifically targeted to our hardware or exclusive to Steam Deck. We’re basically conducting ourselves the same way roughly where we don’t have title that is imminent that we’re going to unveil with the launch of OLED.

He further continues, confirming that the studio is working on more titles that are targeting the current Steam Deck hardware.

“But all of the titles – a lot of which exist but some are unannounced – are definitely targeting this device. So over time you’ll see that from Valve but not in a big splash at the moment of launch.”

With the new OLED model improving in some areas, notably the screen, many had wondered why Valve didn’t take the opportunity to go all out and introduce performance improvements and beefier hardware. As it turns out, they wanted to, but the technology to power what would be Steam Deck 2.0 just doesn’t exist yet, according to Valve’s hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat.

“Obviously we’d love to get even more performance in the same power envelope, but that technology doesn’t exist yet,” Aldehayyat said. “That’s what I think we’d call a Steam Deck 2.0.

The first Steam Deck was the first moment in time where we felt like there was enough GPU performance in a portable form factor that lets you play all your Steam games. We would love for the trend of perf-per-watt to progress rapidly to do that, but it’s not quite there yet.”

From the sounds of it, we shouldn’t expect a Steam Deck 2 anytime soon, though. According to a Valve interview conducted by Bloomberg, Steam Deck 2 is in development, with the promise of next-generation upgrades. The team said don’t expect it for at least another two to three years.

At the very least, it sounds like Valve is very much committed to the handheld market now, with the Steam Deck 2 seemingly promising some major upgrades to handheld gaming.

For now, we’ll just have to settle for the new version of the Steam Deck, which has some pretty significant upgrades as listed below.

Modern Warfare 3 Play Early Guide: How to Access Multiplayer on PS5, Xbox, and PC Before Official Launch

With Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer live in New Zealand, players are starting to find ways to get into the game early in other regions before the game’s official November 10 launch.  If you’re curious on how to play Modern Warfare 3 early, look no further: we’ve got details on how to get in.

Without further ado, let’s get started:

Modern Warfare 3 Play Early Guide

PlayStation 5

If you’re playing on PS5, all you have to do is log into the Call of Duty website and click on “Basic Info” from the dropdown in the top right. From there, simply go to Address and change your country to be New Zealand. This should allow you to start playing the multiplayer on PS5.

Xbox

Over on Xbox, there’s an extra step. On top of changing your region on your COD profile as explained above, you’ll also have to change your Xbox console region to New Zealand. To do so, go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location. From there, just change your Location to New Zealand and follow the prompted restart. You’re good to go!

PC

PC players have a couple different workarounds to play early. For one, all you need to do on PC (or any platform, for that matter) to get in early is be invited to a lobby by someone else who’s playing early. From there, the player who invited you can just kick you to send you back to a lobby of your own.

The other options PC players have is a little more involved, and it requires you to own Modern Warfare II. For this method, you’ll need to have your Task Manager opened and ready to go. Here’s how it goes:

  1. Launch COD HQ and select MWII Multiplayer.
  2. When the screen launching MWII turns black (about 2-4 seconds), click End Task on Call of Duty HQ in Task Manager.
  3. Launch your game as soon as possible in either Steam or Battle.net, whichever platform you’re playing on.
  4. Upon relaunch, the game should put you in your very own Modern Warfare 3 lobby.

This method might take a few tries to get the timing down. Once you do, though, you’ll be all set to start grinding!

That sums up how to get in early. For those of you who get in, we recommend checking out our Mastery Camos guide here.
