Microsoft-Activision Deal Unconditionally Approved by South Korea

After getting the nod from regulators in China and the EU a couple of weeks ago, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King has now been unconditionally approved by the South Korea regulatory body, Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC).

The regulators say that they have “no concerns” and that the acquisition would not harm the competition in console gaming market due to the relatively low market share of the two companies in Korea.

In a statement, the KFTC said:

After reviewing the situation, we have concludedThe likelihood of Microsoft restricting competition, considering their primary focus on providing cloud-based content through Xbox consoles, is limited.

South Korea is now amongst the growing list of countries that have approved the Microsoft-Activision deal. However, the merger is also facing challenges from antitrust watchdogs in the UK and US. In spite of that, Microsoft and ABK are confronting the regulators in legal battles to ultimately close its $68.7 billion dollar merger.

There’s still a long way to go with many legal battles and approvals from countries including New Zealand before the deal is closed. Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st for all the latest announcements and updates regarding the Microsoft-Activision deal.

The Sims 4 Gallery Not Working and Connecting Due to Maintenance (Update)

Those trying to access The Sims 4 Gallery but can’t, it’s not just you, as Maxis has initiated maintenance this May 30. The Sims 4 Gallery not working and connecting is a direct result of this, sadly.

The Sims 4 Gallery Not Working and Connecting This May 30:

Update (June 2, 2023): Maxis has announced that Gallery maintenance is now finished!

Simmers! The extended Gallery maintenance has completed.

Thank you for your patience as services return back online.

Here’s the announcement from the studio:

Simmers, the Gallery will also be going under maintenance starting May 30th at 6am PT & will be unavailable. All creations, comments, likes & downloads will be saved & restored once the Gallery is back up. We appreciate your patience & will continue to update you.

There was also a patch released today (with the official patch notes available here), Maxis has issued a statement on the Gallery being unavailable and promised all creators and whatnot are safe.

Hello Simmers

Kicking off with the ongoing maintenance, we know you are probably missing the Gallery right now – we promise it will be back up and running as soon as possible. The extended maintenance is part of an initiative we have to move the Gallery to new backend systems and services which will bring with it additional flexibility and future feature updates.

Don’t worry, all of your creations, comments, likes, and downloads will be coming over to the new Gallery and will be there waiting for you when the maintenance is complete.

  • At launch, PC and Mac Simmers may notice that the News tab isn’t there and the Gallery Newsfeed is not feeding anymore. This is temporary and we will be looking at bringing them back, in some form, at a later date. Console players will also get these features when they return.
  • Trending Hashtags will be unavailable but you will be able to search by hashtag as usual. The Hashtag panel will return. #Hashtag (wait, is that like Googling Google?)
  • Commenting from thesims.com website will be temporarily unavailable when the Gallery returns. Our focus is on bringing the game systems back and running smoothly. This means that you will be able to read comments on the web Gallery but you will need to be in The Sims 4 to leave new comments
  • Due to technical issues, the Gallery will be temporarily disabled on Macs running El Capitan (10.11) and Sierra (10.12). All items previously downloaded will be available in My Library as usual. We will be bringing access back to players on those OS’s as soon as possible.

If there’s an update on this, we’ll be sure to have the article reflect that.

The Sims 4 Update 1.76 Restores Functionality in Build Mode & More This May 30

Maxis has released The Sims 4 update 1.76, and while this doesn’t fix the Gallery issue, it does restore some functionality to Build Mode along with bug fixes. Read up on everything new in the official The Sims 4 May 30 patch notes.

The Sims 4 Update 1.76 Patch Notes for May 30:

Update 05/30/2023

PC: 1.98.127.1030 / Mac: 1.98.127.1230

Console: Version: 1.76

For updates on Gallery availability be sure to monitor @TheSimsDirect on Twitter.

While this update is available to download and play, the Gallery will be unavailable while the team works behind the scenes on bringing the new services online. When the Gallery returns, you will not need to do anything additional as long as you have installed this update.

One returning feature is that The Sims 4 will automatically connect to the Gallery when the game launches rather than connect on demand which we added when we invited more Simmers into the game by offering The Sims 4 for free. Console Simmers will need to link their accounts to an EA account either during game launch or by opening Options > Game Options > Other and selecting Link EA Account.

Simmers will need to update to this version of The Sims 4 to access the Gallery; the older clients will not be able to connect.

Wow, all that and we haven’t even started on the What’s New? and Bug Fixes – let’s go ahead and jump into those.

  • The Sims Team

What’s New?

We return to consoles with some big changes. We have been busy reviewing all the feedback you have been providing regarding the controls on the PlayStation and Xbox versions of The Sims 4, especially around the recent changes, and have made some important changes in this update.

First, based on your feedback, we have restored some previous functionality in Build Mode and made some additional improvements to bring consistency between game modes and what controller buttons do.

For example, in Create a Sim (CAS) the bumper buttons would switch between Sims, but in Live Mode you would have used the triggers as the bumpers would adjust the game speed. With this update, in Live Mode, switching between Sims will be handled by the bumper buttons to align with CAS, and the triggers will adjust the game speed.

Previously, tiles, doors, windows were rotated by pressing Triangle on PlayStation and Y button on Xbox. We have aligned these objects with other objects and they can now be rotated with the bumper buttons left AND right. Windows and Doors will use the Triangle or Y button to now place multiple, while Tiles will use the button to switch between single tile or full room modes.

There are some subtle differences, but we feel they reduce the overall complexity of playing The Sims 4 on a controller. We recommend that you enable Show Controls Legend (Game Options > Other) to get an idea of the new shortcuts and layouts. The Controls Overlay is always available by pressing L3 on PlayStation or L on Xbox if you prefer to play without the on screen prompts.

Next, while you are in Build Mode, when you select an object from the Lot, the Build Catalog panel will minimize returning screen space for you to navigate. You can also switch cursor modes, by tapping the Touch Pad on PlayStation or the View button on Xbox, while you are in the Build Catalog to select items from the Lot, and when you return to the catalog you will be presented with the last objects you were viewing, allowing you to pick up where you left off.

We have added a number of shortcuts throughout the game. One such shortcut can be found in Create a Sim whereby if you are editing your Sims’ appearance you can press UP on the D-pad to jump to the Identity panel. If you press DOWN on D-pad you will be able to quickly add or remove Sims from your household without needing to toggle cursor modes or navigate with the cursor in that part of the screen.

These updates look to give you the options you have told us you want, along with quicker navigation through the game – to do more with fewer button presses.

We will be continuing to review Answers HQ and look to continue to build on things with your feedback.

Bug Fixes

Base Game

  • When going through CAS Stories your Sim will now confirm that their aspirations and traits cannot be modified
  • The tooltip on the Reset button for the UI Scale setting (Options > Game Options > Accessibility) will correctly reflect if you are using the game defaults or not
  • Excessive jogging can be bad for you but for your Sims it shouldn’t mean they are stuck with Pulled Muscle and Fatigued uncomfortable buffs forever. The buffs will now expire over time…maybe next time stick to just a walk for once
  • Sims will get age appropriate moodlets and buffs, but sometimes don’t we all get sad in a Strange Place?
  • Benches sitLoveseat2x1_EP06GENbusBench_set1, sitSofa3x1_EP03GEN_set1, sitLoveseat2x1_EP03GENbusStop_set1, sitLoveseat2x1_GP06RUSTICbench_set1, and sitLoveseat2x1_EP04GENparkBench_set1 should now all appear as outdoor furniture and count towards Lot requirements like Parks
  • There are additional body scar options for male Sims
  • Mini Mission Crib, Kindermade Kindercrib, BlandCo Contemporary Crib, and The Travel Crib by Gordian now all include Energy Values when viewing them in the Build Mode catalog
  • Erratic Want/Whim now shares the same image as the trait
  • The ymTop_SDX016Rolled top is correctly categorized and will only show up when removing the Feminine filter tag
  • The Gallery / Library button on the Main Menu will remain left aligned even if you take the game offline and then reconnect, just where it should be
  • When starting a Scenario while Enable Guidance System is enabled (Options > Game Options > Tutorials & Tips) or started manually, Emily should no longer fight for screen time over the Scenario requirements in Create a Sim
  • Building a relationship between Photographer and Model takes time… at least it should. It was noted that the relationship and reputation increased too rapidly while taking photos of or with another Sim.
  • Family trees, by definition, keep growing. Now your Sims will be once again able to view their Grand and Great Grand lineages
  • Toddlers can use the Babble interaction on large stuffed animal toys like Blarffy as much as they like and won’t need to wait hours between babbling
  • shelfFloor2x1_EF13GENfauxFireplace_set1, fireplaceWall2x1_EP08EDWOOD_set1, fireplaceWall3x1_EP05HOLIDAYgarland_set1, fireplaceWall2x1_SP18GEN_set1, holidayTree_EP05GEN_set1, and lightFloor_EP05GENTree2x2x2_set1 all show the “Environment“ value in the tooltip

Console

  • Improved legibility of the Controller Legend labels when viewing Notifications
  • Disabling the Social Features in Game Options while viewing the Gallery should no longer force you to look at just the Game Options screen until you restart the game. Still, they are interesting Options
  • Viewing the Venue Information from a Lot placed from My Library or the Gallery will not lock the controls to the UI elements
  • Using the Move Lot option will not prevent you from rotating the Lot
  • Disabling the Show Controls Legend setting in Options > Game Options > Other should hide the button icons and labels from the Gallery. If you need a reminder of what they are, click in the Left Stick to view the Controls Overlay
  • The Controls Legend should no longer disappear after adjusting the UI Scale (Options > Game Options > Accessibility)
  • Cursor will no longer disappear after using the Relationships panel
  • Resizing objects in Build Mode is possible again. While holding the object you want to resize, press and hold L2+R2 (PlayStation) / LT+RT (Xbox) then press Left or Right on the D-Pad to adjust the size and place your giant, or tiny, object into the Lot when ready
  • As part of the changes to Build Mode for the controller, the focus should no longer prevent switching between control types
  • The Controls Overlay (L3 on PlayStation) / (L on Xbox) should be accurate at all times; we have gone through and removed excess or inaccurate button call outs to make the Overlay easier to read and understand

Seasons

  • Adding Seasons Expansion Pack to an existing Saved Game will no longer put you in a Season select nightmare when trying to purchase and open a business

Island Living

  • ymAcc_NecklaceEP07BeadsTier_White can be customized with a selection of color options

Snowy Escape

  • There is a lot to learn in Snowy Escape – 10 pages of Lessons in fact. The page numbers should no longer be cutting off, allowing you to keep up your Mountain Climb Excursions based education more effectively
  • Workaholics should not burnout at the same rate as Sims without the same lifestyle

Cottage Living

  • Purchasing Seeds on consoles now includes additional information on how to complete the purchase without needing to view the Controls Overlay screen to find the corresponding button

High School Years

  • Teens that get expelled from high school will no longer be able to reenroll
  • ymAcc_NecklaceEP12Chain_SolidBlack now has an array of color options to pick from

Growing Together

  • Sims with tracked Milestones won’t forget about them if they are moved into a non-played Household
  • Sims can now have the Difficult Family Dynamic with their spouses. Who squeezes the toothpaste from the middle anyway?!?!
  • shelfFloor2x1_EF13GENfauxFireplace_set1 shows “Eco Footprint Industrial“ and “Functional Off-the-Grid“ values in the tooltip
  • fireplaceFloor2x2_EP10GENstanding_set1 shows “Functional Off-the-Grid“ value in the tooltip
  • Paranoid and Squeamish self discovery moments should be less frequent after declining either one
  • Decreased the frequency of Self Discovery when Sim is promoted

Laundry Day Stuff

  • We have called in a repair service job, and they came by and made improvements to the washing machines and dryers to make them more reliable

Carnaval Streetwear

  • We couldn’t get enough of Carnaval, but it wasn’t the expectation that ymAcc_NecklaceSP30Feathers_DuoPinkBlueDk would show up twice in Create a Sim; now it should only appear once. Still, it’s good to keep the celebrations going all year long
  • Talking of which, ymAcc_NecklaceSP30Feathers_DuoPinkBlueDk should have its full color options available to pick from

Basement Treasures

  • We found the keys to the sculptFloorInventory1x1_SP41GENchest, and it can now be opened and used for storing all your treasures

We’re expecting another patch to re-integrate the Gallery, so stay tuned for another The Sims 4 patch soon.

Xbox Games With Gold for June 2023 Revealed

Microsoft has now revealed the Xbox Games With Gold for June 2023 selection, featuring the first-person cinematic game Adios and the audio-based action adventure The Vale: Shadow of the Crown. This month’s offer once again skips over AAA titles in favor of smaller, more experimental games.

Xbox Games With Gold for June 2023 Selection:

Adios

One choice can change everything. You are a pig farmer in Kansas who has finally had enough of your role helping the mob dispose of bodies on your farm. Your hitman friend tries to convince you to change your mind as the two of you go about the errands of the day. He knows what saying no means. This is a meditative thoughtful game that reflects on morality and spirituality with compelling writing and phenomenal voice acting. Will this be goodbye?

The Vale: Shadow of the Crown

You can close your eyes and listen. This is one of the most unique adventures you’ll experience that leverages sound and haptic controller feedback in an audio-based adventure. Break down the barriers between you as the player and your character as you feel your enemy’s breath, listen to the crunching of footsteps or the clang of weapons. Combat is intense and very different than other combat and fantasy games.

Adios will be available from June 1 till June 30, while The Vale: Shadow of the Crown will be available from June 16 till July 15.

ONGOING SERVER IMPROVEMENTS

The team has dedicated time to reviewing a considerable amount of data and your reports, for which we are grateful. As a result, we have pinpointed several issues, in particular a few that were specifically affecting our EU players. We have taken the necessary steps to address these issues, and we anticipate that you will experience an enhanced gaming experience. Although more work remains to be done, we are confident that we have made significant progress.

BALANCE CHANGES

ROGUES

  • Gl1tch
Returning the A3Salvo to Gl1tch to reduce the saturation of Executioners.

    • Executioner Replaced with A3Salvo
  • Saint
This is to introduce a different secondary option among our free rogues.

    • Executioner Replaced with Warrant
  • Runway
Dialing back the lethality of the character that “has it all” by swapping out one of her lethals for a utility. She is a support after all.

    • Semtex Replaced with Smoke Grenade

WEAPONS AND GADGETS

  • HRM30KS Buff
The HRM30KS is getting damage buff and fall off buff to make this heavy AR more competitive in the mid to long range engagements

    • Bodyshot Damage Increased from 24 -> 25
    • Damage Falloff at all ranges have been improved
  • D40C
Going forward, we will work to make the legendary tier upgrades to strengthen the identity of an individual weapon. In this case the D40c will have its 50 round capacity shifted into the legendary tier upgrade, we feel that the 40 round start is strong enough of a base as is.

    • Legendary Tier Now Increases Mag Size and Removes Jump Accuracy Penalty (The damage range increase has been removed)
  • Objection
The Objection is receiving a damage falloff buff to raise the minimum damage floor.

    • Damage Falloff at all ranges have been improved
  • A3Salvo
    • Bodyshot Damage Increased from 18(36) -> 20(40)
    • Jump Accuracy Penalty Reduced
  • Warrant
Warrant is getting a bloom buff to make it more reliable.

    • Jump Accuracy Penalty Reduced
    • Accuracy Loss Per Shot Reduced
    • Max Firing Accuracy Loss Reduced
  • Trip mine
As we move further away from the era of Toughness, we look to make adjustments in areas that were affected by its existence. Additionally it also had inconsistencies with its range across upgrades, so we are cleaning that up.

    • Base Damage Reduced From 120 -> 100
    • Normalized The Effective Range

KNOWN ISSUES

  • Cosmetic Reward for completing seasonal contracts still not visible, however players will still receive the reward: Victorious Vendetta Banner
  • The HRM30KS Seasonal Contract is currently registering off of hits instead of damage, fix will be in the mid-patch

FIXED ISSUES

  • Fixed some instances where players were unable to fire their weapon
  • Fixed an issue where Vy ability going into partial cooldown after use
  • Fixed an issue where gunshot audio would endlessly play in multiple instances during gameplay
  • Fixed an issue where C4 would disappear whenever a player would die

Diablo 4 Review – Sinful Symphony

Very few games carry the weight on their shoulders that Diablo 4 does. With a legacy so strong and a community so eager, Blizzard had an undertaking of epic proportions ahead. Free from the burden of microtransactions that plagued the mobile-only Diablo Immortal, Diablo 4 comes into its own by respecting the previous chapters while adding a few twists that pave the way into the future of the mythical series. It may not be a revolution in the genre, but hell hath no fury like an addictive action role-playing game that will keep fans busy for ages.

She Sells Sanctuary

Lilith is the new threat in the Diablo series, a mesmerizing and exciting antagonist that was summoned 30 years after the events witnessed in Diablo 3. Without diving into any spoilers, as the story in this game is a treat that every Diablo fan should experience by themselves, the world building and lore is top-tier, fascinating, occasionally predictable, but with more threads and details than you can shake a bone walking stick at. You can indulge in it and appreciate the finely crafted horrors and despair through six acts plus epilogue, or you can skip the dialogues at your own peril, eventually missing out on a terrific grim plot that only comes around once in a decade. Even the prologue brings an early twist, as you celebrate a victory with some townsfolk over drinks and partying, only to find out that a terrible event was just set in motion.

The adventure begins with a lengthy intro cutscene where we first lay our eyes on Lilith, the horned devil of remarkable poise and determination. Gone are the days when Blizzard was the master of cinematics, every game coming with a stunning intro that was a distinguishing factor from the competition, sometimes worth the price of admission by itself, an unmistakable calling card that surely helped build the reputation that the studio enjoys up to this day. Still, Diablo 4 does justice to that legacy, with the occasional jaw-dropping in-game cutscene featuring your fully customized avatar, going to great lengths to show character emotions that range from fear to anguish, covering the full spectrum of hell on earth temperaments, and the storytelling significantly gains from these efforts.

Diablo 4 Review

Diablo 4 is an always-online game, a sign of the times and a choice that comes bundled with a wealth of pros and cons. If you want to live this journey as a solo adventure for most of the time, you are still bound to the will of the servers, with potentially massive queues by the time of launch – nothing that isn’t to be expected, and the price to pay for the huge world of Sanctuary and its wide appeal. Even if you don’t want to dive into a dungeon in a party, you can still see other players roaming the land and lending their helping hand to any villager in distress. Cross-progression and cross-play help in this regard, as you join a clan and go in risky journeys with your fellow adventurers. Unfortunately, this is an aspect that I couldn’t dig deeper into due to the limited player count in this review build, but everything is pointing to exciting raids with varied class synergies at work.

The downside of servers under high stress is that the experience may not be optimal right from the start; however, take this with a grain of salt as results may vary, and what I experienced in this restricted build hopefully will not be reflected in the final version, or at least it will improve quickly. There is a bout of lag every time the game seamlessly loaded a new area of the massive world, and there were missing assets and text in inventory and vendors. Again, it’s impossible to say if that’s going to happen at release, but it’s likely to and worth noting.

A Class of Its Own

Diablo 4 Classes

The five starting classes are a staple of the series, comprised of familiar faces that any fan will surely recognize. We have the Barbarian, Rogue, Necromancer, Druid, and Sorcerer. Going through each of these heroes would be too lengthy a task, and it’s too early to properly discuss balance issues and whatnot. You will soon discover your favorite based on the mobility and inherent skills, such as the Necromancers’ ability to summon undead minions as companions, or the Druid’s ability to turn into a werewolf. But this must be combined with some knowledge of the ultimate skills and passives, a small part of the large mesh of abilities that drastically change your build.

In the end, it was the Sorcerer class that lured me with its elemental mastery. A ranged hero with the power of frost, pyromancy, and shock all together sounded like a great choice to keep enemies at bay, while unleashing a barrage of spells. It did not disappoint, although there were some close calls where I could use a heavy axe of sorts – alas, that’s out of the question. On the other hand, unleashing shock attacks that would spread to nearby enemies was delightful, the subsequent crackles sounding like music to my ears.

Picking an ultimate from the skill tree with the certainty that the rest would be unavailable was a tough choice, but you can bask in the notion that refunding all skill points is a possibility, a.k.a. a respec. You earn one skill point per level, so you won’t exactly be drowning in these valuable assets.

A Seamless and Beautifully Scarred World

The world of Sanctuary is comprised of five massive regions: Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, Scosglen, Kehjistan, and Hawezar. With seamless transitions between areas and some truly surprisingly immersive missions such as the desert one, which I won’t spoil here, there’s enough diversity of goals to stray from the familiar hack and slash gameplay. You can take a breather from the longer main campaign quests and take upon yourself to help fellow denizens of varying types of fortune, but there’s a limit of 20 unfinished side quests in your journal.

Priority quests will guide you through some of the basics, such as gem crafting, but your first big moment of celebration is likely to happen when you unlock the mount system. It will make you sweat for it – I was level 30-ish when I finally got my first trusty stead – but the payoff is tremendous. Exploring the regions is a lot faster, assuming you ignore the mobs for a while as you unveil the map and activate some of those invaluable waypoints.

Speaking of waypoints, these very useful fast travel systems are but a small part of something called renown. What is the renown system in Diablo 4 and how does it work? This is a score that increases as you perform certain actions of diverging complexity. To earn renown you can unlock waypoints, discover new areas, activate altars of Lilith, complete side-quests and dungeons, and liberate strongholds, one of the hardest challenges of the bunch. At certain thresholds, renown rewards you with bonus XP and gold, along with account-wide bonuses such as skill points and potion charges that will make all the difference when you start messing about with alts.

Diablo 4 Review

The way that strongholds are organically tied into the rest of the world, in a similar way to the occasional event, is worthy of praise. These can be triggered as soon as you enter the area of action, enclosing you in their not-so-little adventure that may revolve around destroying a camp and slaying their inhabitants, or investigating the shady rituals going inside various houses. It’s remarkably engaging and often challenging, and another addition to what is a massive game to begin with.

Dungeons are what you would expect and possibly dream of in a game like this. With a mix of procedural generation and handcrafting, the result is never less than convincing and absorbing, with great attention to detail in ways that other games may not even bother with – the way that walls disappear to avoid losing track of your character is nearly perfect, and the size varies between short to quite extensive, with random enemy placement as the cherry on top. Cellars are bite-sized dungeons where all hell breaks loose for a couple of minutes as you enact justice in all kinds of abominations and Lilith worshippers.

In case the challenge is a bit tame for Diablo veterans who are winging it without breaking a sweat, the World Tier can be changed to increase enemy difficulty, with the caveat of additional experience and gold. Die-hard players will surely attempt to raise world level at least to level two – aptly titled Veteran – to make the most out of their endgame experience.

Along with your faithful horse, potions will be your best friend. With slight but substantial changes since the genesis of the series, Diablo 4 has a health system where you can consume potions in succession without cooldown times, and these can be found in the wild by breaking objects, from enemy drops, or when you reach a certain threshold in a boss fight. You don’t carry more than a handful at a time with you, requiring some intensive saving, but there are ways to raise the count, such as the renown system.

Bravely Familiar

Diablo 4 Review mount

There isn’t a secret to Diablo’s core gameplay loop, and Diablo 4 only hones a formula that doesn’t need reinventing. The sheer satisfaction that comes from the somewhat repetitive but addictive nature of defeating enemy, grabbing loot, leveling up is almost beyond words, a template that Blizzard didn’t quite create, but devotes such care and attention to its intricacies that it feels unsurpassed. Close to a decade of development time has paid off in full, our hero moving as expected and feeling like an integral part of a world that is grim, bold, and decaying, the story unfolding without any visible barrier to progress besides your own hypothetical limitations.

Combat feels weighty and exciting, progressing from a slow start with a meager selection of attacks to a devastating hellbent machine, normal and ultimate skills ranked to the max, passives up and running, inferno serpent drawing enemies near and dealing burning damage over time. The choices are significant and alluring, the battlefield combos compelling, the gold you pick up from each downed enemy rewarding with its coin jingling sound.

Dungeons offer your standard gameplay with the occasional variable thrown in for good measure, mostly consisting of finding a box, an artifact or a key and taking it to the blocked passage. It’s when the boss fights start that you must resort to your full knowledge, encounters often requiring full focus and constant management of skills and respective cooldowns.

Managing your streamlined inventory is a minigame in itself, as every piece of gear of different rarity is constantly replaced by a superior one, preferably of legendary tier, often upgraded to its fullest and socketed with a precious gem whenever possible. You can discard the outranked gear, place it in your town stash, or sell it at the nearest merchant. Don’t get too attached to your loot, and make sure to regularly store your most prized possessions, especially the ones that are bound to alternate classes.

It’s the End of the World and Everything Is Fine

Diablo 4 Review

Weren’t it for the unmistakable touch of Lilith’s hordes and Sanctuary would be one of the most gorgeous and idyllic places to enjoy a trip to. There’s not a moment of hesitation, a moment of doubt like with the previous chapter, when I say that this is a world filled with beauty in decay, a mixed creation of man, nature, and evil that results in stunning sightseeing. The more I explored each biome, each town, the more it hit me – the absorbing details, the countless minutiae of this world deserves an attentive look beyond the ravaging battles taking place.

The environments are superb, with trails and footprints in snow and dirt, showing the paths taken by your hero but also from fauna, up to the swirling trails of the snakes on the desert sand. Even some of the enemy attacks leave their markings on the snow, unexpected touches that are all the better for it. The more you start to notice these details, the more you appreciate the work that went into it.

Value the finer things you find in Sanctuary’s nature, because most of the time you will be staring at the gruesome and the abominable – which is what we are also looking for in a Diablo game. The muted palette serves as the adequate background for the bloody and disgusting trails of carnage, bodies scattered around, limbs missing, pulpy masses of the undecipherable, chaos as far as the eye can see. Corpse rolling will be one of your main activities, as you pillage the innumerous ill-fated villagers and adventurers for their last coin, in a morally dubious action for the greater good.

A lot of praise goes to the environmental destruction, way more than the standard jars and piles of rocks that the early gameplay hints at. Later, no tombstone will be left unscathed, nor any shelves, cabinets, carriages, and a lot more that can be taken down in your constant search for gold and assorted loot. Even if just for the sake of bringing the place down and leave no stone unturned, the joys of those crumbling sounds are second to none.

Diablo 4 Review Legion Coop

The atmosphere is of undeniable quality, bolstered by the awesome soundtrack that goes from moody banjo and violin tunes during your town exploration to spine-chilling, eerie folk choir tunes in some locations.

But since perfection is commonly said to be unattainable, not even Diablo 4 manages to avoid the occasional flaw. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to do in each town besides talking to quest givers and the assorted vendors. There’s no real imagination at work here, no incentive for exploration such as hidden collectibles or secret storylines, at least as far as I have gathered.

The camera could zoom out further than it does, allowing for a better tactical view of the battles, but that’s not possible. Oddly enough, it automatically zooms in even more while we’re in town, something that I didn’t find necessary. There’s also some randomness to the skip dialogue option, something on the table for some NPCs but not for others, and it doesn’t seem to have a rule or reason for this – side quests or main story, varying importance, doesn’t matter, it ends up feeling arbitrary.

Expect to see some enemies perishing in awkward positions, sometimes even standing up, but my main concern happened during a campaign quest. I went into a cellar of my own volition midway through a level 39 quest, and when I exited it, the current mission progress was reset, forcing me to backtrack and again pick up a couple of items.

The Start of Something Grand

Diablo 4 Review

Still, for all its flaws, Diablo 4 remains a remarkable game and it’s only just beginning. The way that it shines through its confidence in refining a gameplay style that isn’t revolutionary, but it’s as addictive as can be, is a lesson and a warning to all the competition – it’s not about reinventing the wheel, it’s about making sure that it’s as round and smooth as it can be.

Do yourself a favor: ditch your reservations and step into Sanctuary as soon as you can. It’s likely going to be literal hell during the launch queues, but you’ll have a beautifully grim and visceral adventure ahead, one where every leveling up sound will feel like music to your ears. Enjoy it to the best of your possibilities because an action-RPG of this caliber may only arrive in another decade or so, and missing out on Diablo 4 would be something that may just reserve you a spot in hell.

Score: 9.5/10

Pros:

  • Familiar gameplay honed to near-perfection
  • Storytelling gets the spotlight with great cutscenes and lore
  • Beautiful in all environmental details, from nature to man-made, to visceral hell
  • Massive open world with various activities
  • Five very different classes
  • Classic but extremely polished and addictive combat

Cons:

  • Some lag issues that hopefully will be quickly sorted

    • Bite renamed to Pounce and description clarified that it hits multiple targets. The functionality remains unchanged.
    • Planar Venom now only applies to Pounce, but Pounce always applies the poison for 4s.

Gear Powers

  • The Maiden’s Blade power from the Body pieces of the Dark Maiden’s set can no longer stack.
