Original Story

The secrets of the Battlefield 4 Premium’s Phantom Program are beginning to unravel as keen members of the Battlefield community attempt to decode the last and final phase presented in the just-released Final Stand DLC.

As you may have already gathered, the ultimate reward for completing all of the Phantom Program’s assignments, available only to Battlefield 4 Premium members, appears to be the “Phantom”, a compound bow that fits in the primary weapon slot and sports three different arrow heads as ammunition.

Thanks to BattleRushGaming and DANNYonPC, we now know where to find the bow. The question is how to access it and how to find the Battlelog password that unlocks the fourth Phantom Program Assignment?

Here are the original videos that kicked off the investigation:

JackFrags‘ video featured above the post does a good job wrapping everything up and also includes a number of other nifty easter eggs included in the Final Stand DLC. Definitely give them all a watch and, if you want to get involved in the hunt, check out the official Phantom Program thread on Reddit.

Lastly, since the Phantom Bow is unlocked on private servers, users have been toying around with it and getting a feel for the new weapon. Leave it to LevelCapGaming to present an in-depth weapon guide with solid stats, arrow type analysis, and aiming techniques. You can watch his video below:

Destiny – New EV-30 DLC Sparrow Lets Guardians Perform Aerial Tricks And Stunts In Game

Bungie is giving Guardians of the Last City on Earth the opportunity to let loose and have a bit of fun with a new bit of Destiny DLC exclusive to Destiny Expansion Pass holders or available in the game’s upcoming The Dark Below expansion.

If you happen to be an owner of the pass now or get it any time before January 15, you’ll find a little gift waiting for you upon your next visit to the Postmaster vendor in The Tower: The EV-30 Tumbler Sparrow.

The fancy blue bike with flame decals ain’t no ordinary Sparrow, however. As you’ll see in the trailer above, it allows you to get your ‘X Game’ on by performing some pretty rad motocross tricks.

Here’s how it works. Pressing Right Trigger on the Xbox controller or R2 on the PlayStation controller after catching some air puts your Sparrow in “Trick Mode”, allowing you to flip or roll it around and even perform wicked stunts mapped to the d-pad:

  • Up – No Hands
  • Right – Can-Can
  • Down – Superman
  • Left – Can-Can

If you’re undecided on the Expansion Pass, you’ll still get the Sparrow should you decide to pick up Destiny’s The Dark Below DLC separately this December 9.

What’s your take on Destiny’s latest offering? Cool or gimmicky?

Try Destiny For Free For a Limited Time, Demo Lets You Transfer Your Guardian To The Full Game

The most talked about game of 2014 is now free to try for a limited time on both previous generation and current generation consoles.

Users on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 can now take Bungie’s shared-world shooter, Destiny, for a test drive by downloading the games limited-time free trial.

Players will be able to create their own Guardian, sample a few story missions, and take part in some co-operative and social activities. Any Guardian you create in the demo will also transfer fully, stats and all, to the full game should you decide to make the purchase afterwards, as long as you remain within the same console family.

You can check your console’s respective digital store for the demo now and take Destiny for a spin.

Destiny was recently updated earlier this week with some major improvements to UI, PvP, Voice Chat, and more. You can read the full list of patch notes here, if you missed it.

Aside from the update’s primary purpose to enable Battlefield 4’s Final Stand DLC, the patch offers a number of improvements in the user interface department with tweaked hit indicators, new options, HUD improvements, and a hefty dose of various fixes. The update also dives deep into a number of map-specific tweaks, all listed below

Have a look at the full list of notes and be sure to drop a comment below letting us know what you think of Final Stand so far!

GENERAL

  • This game update enables the Battlefield 4 Final Stand expansion pack.

  • Added advanced gameplay options for customizing the hit indicator.
  • Tweaked hit indicators: medium hit texture to better fit with small hit and headshot textures.
  • Improved the hit indicator accuracy from vehicles when shooting enemy infantry.
  • Made it clear in the in-game squad menu that a “Squad Join”-squad is not a private squad.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from joining a rented server that was protected with a password.

  • Added fix for a water splash effect on players who were shot at after emerging from a dive. This usually occurred after the second time the player emerged.
  • Fixed several issues with the underwater audio mixer for players who were diving and emerging several times in a row.
  • Fixed the Battle Pickup respawn so that it will only respawn after its ammo has been depleted or the player carrying the Battle Pickup has been eliminated.

  • Cleaned up the reticle icons and thickened the lines to make them read more clearly.
  • Changed friendly fire to be OFF in the “Classic” rent a server options preset.
  • Updated the new advanced HUD option descriptions where “Friendly” was sometimes incorrectly referenced to as “Enemy”.
  • Fixed an issue where knifing a player with the “4th Floor” dog tag would display a blank dog tag.

  • Updated vehicle HUD colors and shaders to be more visible vs bright backgrounds.

Report – You’ll Be Able To Use Swords In Destiny’s New Raid

If I were to ask you what your favorite Story Mission in Destiny was, chances are you’d answer, “That one on the Moon where you get to swing around a giant sword. What was it called? Oh. The Sword of Crota!”

That’s because it probably was one of the most fun missions in the game and, as it turns out, Bungie probably knows it.

After a number of DLC items showed up in Destiny’s database after yesterday’s large game update, which are meant to unlock after the launch of The Dark Below DLC this December, users have discovered a few interesting attributes that potentially offer insight into what the new six-player Raid, Crota’s End, might hold.

For example, searching through some of the new items listed on DestinyDB, you’ll find that almost all of the new Raid gear offers buffs specific to Crota’s End. Here are a few of them:

  • Lich Bane – Projectiles have a chance to disorient Hive Wizards
  • Hive Disruptor – This weapon deals bonus damage to stronger Hive enemies
  • Dark Breaker – Projectiles will overpenetrate through Hive Knight Wall of Darkness
  • Burgeoning Hunger – What power drives this appetite that grows after each meal?
  • Crota’s Pet – Three rapid precision kills will return one round to the mag
  • Moment of Speed – Gain a temporary increase to reload speed while Oversoul’s Gaze is active
  • Moment of Power – Gain a temporary increase to weapon damage while Oversoul’s Gaze is active

You’ll notice the new “Oversoul’s Gaze” mechanic, which is likely some sort of spell an enemy, or perhaps the Raid boss, can cast on you and your party.

More interestingly, as Reddit user debugman18 pointed out, one of the new items, a pair of boots, offers its wearer a buff that suggests sword wielding is actually thing that will be in Destiny’s new Raid:

  • Swordbearer’s Touch – Gain a temporary increase to Agility while carrying the sword of a Hive Swordbearer.

It makes sense and was probably in all likelihood to begin with, but it’s pretty cool to know that Destiny’s next Raid might finally put your sword skills to use.

As the appearance of any of these items have yet to pass, take the info with a grain of salt for now. If you’re interested, follow the link to DestinyDB above to see all of the new gear added in the latest patch.

Keep your sights on MP1st for more Destiny updates!

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Multiplayer Review – A New Era Or Another Repeat?

Did you hear? A new Call of Duty developer is in town, and that has a lot of veteran fans of the annual first-person shooter series eager to see what exactly that might mean for this year’s entry.

Call of Duty has been primarily built on a two-year development cycle between Activision studios Infinity Ward, famous for introducing the Modern Warfare series, and Treyarch, best known for their work on the Black Ops series. This year marks a first for the franchise: a three-year development cycle with the introduction of a brand new studio, Sledgehammer Games.

Sledgehammer isn’t entirely new to Call of Duty, however. The dev house got its big break by assisting sister studio Infinity Ward in the completion of 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Before that, co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey were busy conceptualizing a gritty third-person Call of Duty game set in the Vietnam War, which never ended up seeing the light of day. They’ve got chops as a developer — previous work includes the genre-revolutionizing game, Dead Space — but does Sledgehammer have what it takes to live up to the passionate and sometimes fierce expectations that millions of Call of Duty fans have every year?

With an extra year of development time and a new driver behind the steering wheel, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has the potential to drastically alter the direction the series is headed in. But without the same level of expertise as other studios and with so much pressure placed on their debut solo project that aims to be the first truly next-gen Call of Duty title, will Sledgehammer find themselves in the ditch?

Advanced Warfare

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare certainly is the biggest departure from the series’ tried-and-true formula since 2007, when the original Modern Warfare fast-forwarded Call of Duty’s traditionally World War II setting to present day. But, it’s still Call of Duty. In that sense, I think Sledgehammer Games accomplished exactly what they set out to do: Introduce new concepts and move the series forward in a meaningful way without alienating long-time fans.

Advanced Warfare’s roots clearly lie in the foundation set by Treyarch and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, despite Sledgehammer owing much of their success to their previous work on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Pick-10 is back, except now it’s Pick-13. Once again, weapon attachments only affect weapon behavior, while Perks only affect your soldier’s performance. Wildcards appear once more, while weapon camoflage patterns are unlocked as they were in Black Ops 2. League Play returns as a Ranked Playlist in Advanced Warfare, and as Treyarch did before them, Sledgehammer has placed a heavy emphasis on competitive settings and eSports-friendly modes.

Sledgehammer’s vision of the future — 2054, to be exact — does differ substantially enough from Treyarch’s to not be criticized for borrowing too heavily, but at times, I wonder why Advanced Warfare simply wasn’t called “Black Ops 3”. It really feels like a natural progression of Treyarch’s latest work, which is just fine by me. I personally thought Black Ops 2 was the best thing to happen to Call of Duty in a while. Similarly, Advanced Warfare is exactly what the franchise needed right now. Whether it’s the right direction or not is largely up to you and your tastes, but the fresh design ideas are much appreciated. Oddly, any advancements or additions made in Call of Duty: Ghosts appear to be largely ignored here, which may be a good thing to those who’ve expressed distaste for last year’s entry.

Advanced Warfare

So, what is new in Advanced Warfare?

Let’s start with the most obvious: The Exo Suit. Every Operator, as they are called in Advanced Warfare’s multiplayer, is equipped with a performance-enhancing Exo Skeleton Suit that grants enhanced speed, strength, and, most notably, mobility. On the ground, players can Boost Slide while sprinting and Boost Dodge left, right, and back as a way to quickly get in and out of gunfights or cover. In the air, players can Boost Jump (double jump), Boost Dodge left, right, back, and forward, or send their Operator speeding to the ground in a special Boost Slam melee attack that kills on direct impact. You’d think that melee attacks would reach all new levels of absurdity with the assisted strength, but while a good socking to the face will send soldiers flying, the range of melee attacks has been toned down significantly from previous titles.

What I find most impressive is how intuitively these actions are integrated into the console controller layout. Performing a Boost Jump is as easy as pressing the jump button twice, as expected, while all Exo Dodge techniques are mapped to the left thumb stick. Whether on the ground or in the air, boosting is a simple matter of clicking the thumb stick in while pointing it in the desired direction. Meanwhile, the Boost Slam is as easy as pressing the melee button while in mid-air. All of it will really only take you a few games to get the hang of and you’ll be zipping around in the air like a Super Saiyan in no time.

There’s certainly a comparison to Respawn’s Titanfall and its nimble Pilots to be made, but Advanced Warfare ditches the forward momentum-based wall-running chains for more vertical and tactical movement that allows you to advance or retreat more rapidly. The way Sledgehammer has integrated it enhances the game’s gunplay, I find, while Respawn’s implementation better serves map traversal. Personally, I prefer the former and think it’s better suited to Call of Duty.

Advanced Warfare

On that note, I believe there is a small case to be made against the new movements. While it increases the intensity and speed in firefights and moment-to-moment gameplay, it sure does a number on map flow and throws any measure of predictability out the window. Expect to be shot in the back a lot more than previous titles with players zipping around the map and behind you at record speeds. That, and Sledgehammer’s tendency to re-spawn players very close to hotspots, objectives, or where ever your Operator was just killed, can lead to some very frustrating and unfair deaths. On the bright side, I fully expect tweaks to spawning if player feedback demands it and Exo movement does show up on radar, so it’s manageable if you’ve got a good eye. You’ll also need to be wary of your own movements as well, as you can see by the new and improved mini-map that now notifies you when your soldier is making noise.

The new gameplay elements and deeper meta-game introduced by the Exo Suit can be a bit of a trade off, but it’s one I think was necessary regardless, even if I’m still undecided on it. What has me most curious is the question — and it’s probably the same question on everyone’s mind — of whether or not future titles from Treyarch and Infinity Ward follow the trend.

Either way, if none of that is for you, there’s always Advanced Warfare’s Classic playlist that does away with the Exo Suit entirely. Though, maps are built in favor of the new mechanics, so it’s likely you still won’t find that “classic” Call of Duty experience you’re looking for. Speaking of maps, if, like me, you were at all a fan of Black Ops 2’s designs and layouts, you’ll probably find a lot to like in Advanced Warfare’s roster of 13 maps at launch, 14 if you include “Atlas Gorge” from the Season Pass. Most maps are sectioned off into lanes, only a solid dose of verticality is introduced this time around as it’s now much easier for players to gain height advantages quickly. Perhaps the most difficult tactic to master in Sledgehammer’s shooter is keeping tabs on what’s above you just as much as what’s in front, behind, or beside you. If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that I need to improve my aiming skills to better track enemies that launch into the air mid-battle. It’s tricky, I tell ya, but nice to be challenged again.

Advanced Warfare

As mentioned previously, the Pick-10 create-a-class system is back, but now with an extra three points that you can gain by deselecting Scorestreaks — a first for the series. These can be spent on extra Attachments, more Perks, a second Exo Launcher grenade, or Wildcards that let you wield an additional Exo Ability, more Scorestreaks, or a primary weapon in place of a secondary. The level of customization has never been so deep in Call of Duty, and it even extends to Scorestreaks, which can now be tailored via a wide selection of options, adding to its overall cost of in-game points. It’s too bad that a lot of them, including some of the top-tiers ones, are severely ineffective at getting additional kills. I found it more useful to forgo Scorestreaks entirely and to spend those points elsewhere. The guns on the Paladin gunship, for example, are rather inaccurate and overheat much too quickly.

Perk balance has been reconsidered to reduce “crutch” options to a minimum, providing ample opportunity for more unique loadouts set-ups that perhaps aren’t normally as popular. Dead Silence, for example, a perk that mutes your soldier’s footstep sounds, has now been relegated to an Exo Ability, a slot that’s filled with just as equally useful options. Meanwhile, all soldiers can now “fast reload” weapons by double-tapping the reload button. You end up losing the remaining ammunition in your magazine, but it helps cut down your reliance on what are normally ‘must-have’ Perks like Sleight-of-Hand or Attachments like Dual Magazine. In any case, Sledgehammer’s thoughtfulness in opening up class balance is much appreciated.

And, yes, there are no Claymores or I.E.D.s in Advanced Warfare. Praise the COD Gods!

A much wider selection of grenades is also available in the Exo Launcher slot, including new additions like the EMP Grenade, Tracking Drone, and Spike Drone, on top of returning favorites like the Frag, Semtex, and Stun grenades. A personal favorite of mine is the Threat Grenade that highlights enemies in its vicinity when thrown. Exo Abilities, on the other hand (literally), are Perk-like abilities that are more closely tied to your Exo Suit and replace what was normally the Tactical Grenade button on your controller or keyboard binding. These interesting options grant opportunities to wield a ballistic Exo Shield, gain an additional burst of speed, cloak your soldier, hover in mid air, or block incoming explosives, all for a short amount of time as each ability is tied to a battery-life that depletes rapidly. You’re only given one battery per life, so, they must be used wisely.

The selection of weapon Attachments are your standard affair, save for a few. There is an assortment of high-tech optics to choose from, courtesy of Advanced Warfare’s future setting, including a Target Enhancer that highlights enemies in its line of sight or an Auto Focus Sight that automatically zooms in on a target when your soldier is stationary. The new Tracker pings enemies on your mini-map that you injured during combat while the Parabolic Microphone pics up suppressed weapon fire, also revealing your enemy’s location.

Advanced Warfare

I didn’t find Advanced Warfare’s weapon selection particularly extensive at first, but there is more to it than what initially meets the eye. Hundreds of different weapon variations can be unlocked via Supply Drops, which award players with three different tiers of items — Enlisted, Professional, and Elite — in three different categories — Weapon Loot, Gear Loot, and Reinforcements — earned by simply playing. Elite variations of weapons, for example, not only offer alter base statistics, but also often sport a noticeably different appearance, including unique camo options. You can very much liken Advanced Warfare’s Elite Weaponry to the Legendary Weapons you might find in Bungie’s Destiny, which is a really cool RPG-esque addition to Call of Duty, in my eyes.

Even in their non-Elite form, you’ll find that, in addition to stats like Damage, Accuracy, Fire Rate, etc., base weapons in Advanced Warfare each come equipped with specialized character traits. This is most apparent in the Sniper Rifle category where you’ll find one that can only one-hit-kill with a headshot but fires very rapidly, another that boasts a more familiar damage model, another that fires two shots, the second of which triggers the first round to explode, and another that is pretty much a guaranteed one-hit-kill anywhere on the body but can only be fired while aiming through the scope. You’ll also find four round and five round burst weapons, weapons that can only be dual-wielded, weapons that fire faster over time, or weapons that grow more accurate over time, among many other flavors. It brings real purpose to each and every weapon choice, making your selection that much more meaningful, and is something that I think would do well to carry over into future titles.

Of course, I must make mention of some of the more out-there weapons like the EM1 direct energy rifle that’s basically a giant laser gun, the Tac-19 shotgun that sends opponents flying with a powerful blast of energy, or the MORS and RW1 railguns that are ever so satisfying to get kills with.

Advanced Warfare

Unfortunately, a lot of the more specialized weapons appear to be taking a back seat to the tried-and-true Assault Rifles which are clearly the more dominant class of weapons in Advanced Warfare. In addition to simply being fully automatic, they’re extremely accurate and are the only class of weapons that don’t sway whatsoever, which is extremely beneficial when trying to take out agile targets that are usually on the move. Of the lot, the Bal-27 is the clear winner, which can get annoying when it appears in your Kill Cam death, after death, after death. Sub-Machine Guns are decent but have a harder time matching up with their longer-barrelled brothers due to the distance they must close, which also applies to Shotguns. Sniper Rifles can also be quite difficult to use. Not only will your targets practically never stay still, but the amount of scope sway gives off the impression that your soldier pounded back one too many brewskies before charging into battle. In what was clearly an effort to crack down on “quickscopers”, perhaps the multiplayer designers went a little too far, making sniping for average shmucks like me a lot tougher.

Through Supply Drops or by completing certain challenges, you can also earn your Operator some seriously sweet-looking gear that Sledgehammer has graciously allowed us to show off to others in Advanced Warfare’s Virtual Lobbies while in Matchmaking. Again like Destiny, your Operator is fully customizable with eyewear, helmets, chest pieces, gloves, Exo Suites, etc. It’s the icing on the already delicious cake that is Advanced Warfare’s impressive selection of personalization options, a selection that is very likely to be widened through a plentiful offering of micro-downloadable content, if that’s your thing.

Another no-brainer is Advanced Warfare’s Virtual Firing Range that lets you test out all of your gear instantaneously while creating your class at any point before or during matchmaking. It wasn’t just a thrown-in feature either. Eight different simulations are at your service with virtual dummies that mimic the hit boxes and health of real players, allowing you to put different damage models to the test.

Black Ops 2’s Pick-10 system was already really good at letting you play Call of Duty the way you want to play Call of Duty and Advanced Warfare’s Pick-13 just takes that to the next level. What you may or may not agree with is the decision to go back to a progression-based unlock system instead of allowing gamers to pick and choose the order in which they unlock gear. It’s really up to preference. Interestingly, like Weapon Camo unlocks, Weapon Attachments aren’t earned linearly by simply scoring kills with a particular gun. Instead, there are certain tasks to complete that will unlock specific attachments, adding some nice variety to the unlock tree.

Advanced Warfare

There really isn’t a whole lot new in the way of game modes, save for two very special ones. That said, a lot of the classic modes you know and love play a hell of a lot differently with the new Exo Suit movements. Like I said earlier, map control in modes like Domination can be a lot tricker when it’s much easier for enemies to slip by unnoticed and vice versa. You’ll probably be reaching a little higher for dog tags than you’re used to in modes like Kill Confirmed and Search and Rescue as well. Hardpoint, a favorite of mine from Black Ops 2, also returns but with a bit of that Exo spice for a new flavor. Advanced Warfare’s Capture the Flag, of course, raises the bar in terms of speed and intensity.

Momentum is a returning mode from way back in the day when Treyarch launched Call of Duty: World at War. Based on what was then called War, Momentum is comparable to a very linear Domination with moving objective points where progress is only made when a point is captured and a new one opens up deeper inside enemy territory. Capturing the one closest to their ‘home base’ wins the match. Of course, it works both ways, so there can be a lot of back-and-forth if both teams are equally matched, which can lead to some very drawn-out, high kill-count matches. Spawn are a terrible mess, but it’s part of the chaos, and if you can learn to overcome it, you might crawl out of it with some serious kills.

The newest addition to Advanced Warfare’s roster of game modes is Uplink. If you’ve ever played Halo’s Ricochet, then you know exactly what your getting into. Its pretty much a carbon copy, but Call of Duty style, which isn’t a bad thing. It was a fantastically fun game mode in Halo and it is here too. Instead of scoring the most kills, Operators must pick-up a ball-like satellite and either score a touchdown or throw it into the goal located near the enemy’s spawn. More points are offered for jumping into the floating net, as opposed to lobbing it in. Like real life sports, you can pass the satellite to teammates or attempt to run it in yourself. You can even catch enemies off guard by tossing the satellite to them, forcing them to drop their weapon and giving you the opportunity to neatly take them out with yours before picking the satellite back up again. I personally love modes like these where emphasis isn’t placed as heavily on weapon skill, but on strategy, tactics, and teamwork instead.

In addition to your standard playlist of 11 game modes, there are also Hardcore, Classic (no Exo Suit), and Bonus playlists. Competitive players can work through different leagues in Ranked Play, as in Black Ops 2. Clans will also have ample opportunity to participate in Clan Wars, courtesy of Beachhead Studios, which can be managed through the official Call of Duty Companion App for free.

Advanced Warfare

Advanced Warfare’s three-year development cycle has perhaps produced the most noticeable results in the dramatically improved visual and audio departments. Unfortunately, it still struggles to hit full 1080p on Xbox One, but looks Stunning on PlayStation 4 and on PC where you’ll find an impressive number of basic and advanced graphical options.

Sledgehammer has made a number of enhancements that help elevate Call of Duty’s status to a true next-gen title, but this is mostly only true in the game’s single player campaign where you’ll find true-to-life facial animations in ridiculously high fidelity, along with improved lighting and special effects. You won’t see anything as jaw-dropping in multiplayer matches as backgrounds are still rather 2D and any major special effects are kept to a minimum, but Call of Duty has always been about its solid 60FPS frame rate, which is once again achieved across all platforms. Still, I’m counting down the days until I can look down and see my soldier’s feet and am no longer just a floating camera. All the other modern shooters are doing it. Why can’t Call of Duty?

In addition to a smooth frame rate, Advanced Warfare boasts a very solid “netcode” (hit detection, hit notification, etc.) that has lead to some of the best ‘feeling’ gun fights I’ve had in a Call of Duty title yet. Now, a number of reports and video proof of the complete opposite have surfaced since launch, including complaints of very “laggy” gameplay, so do bear that in mind. I may be one of the lucky few who’ve managed to steer clear of such troubles. It’s one of those things where when it works, you’ll feel it, and it feels good.

Crisp and responsive audio may also play a large part in what I would call a very ‘tight’ gameplay experience. The mix of weapon fire with landing hit marker notifications is brutal. Bullets really sound like they hurt. Advanced Warfare’s audio landscape is crystal clear with every “clank” and “whizz” of the Exo Suit coming through nicely. Operators are nimble and fast on their feet and in the air but still retain a sense of weight and sheer power. Though, I wonder what happened to footstep sounds, as they are almost non-existant. It’s extremely difficult to hear enemies out of your range of vision, which is already pretty narrow on consoles, considering all that there is to keep track of. Either way, I’d like to see a bit of a volume increase for enemy footsteps to at least match older Call of Duty titles. While I’m at it, what’s up with dead bodies and why can’t I distinguish them from prone enemies? I’m not sure what the older games did differently, but I could clearly differentiate between the two. In Advanced Warfare, I’m getting popped by prone players I mistook for dead bodies all the time.

In Advanced Warfare, you’ll find a few oddities here and there that appear like rookie mistakes, but Sledgehammer’s willingness to break the mold right where it counts, at a core gameplay level, might just be what it takes to reel in brand new faces and perhaps entice ex-fans to hop back on the bandwagon.

Advanced Warfare

4 / 5

While it shows in certain areas that Sledgehammer Games isn’t the veteran Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward and Treyarch are, one must admire a studio for taking risks when they could have easily played it safe. They’ve certainly left their mark on the series, which is now better for it. If what the company was able to do in three years is any evidence of the of the care and quality going in to future titles in the years to come, things are really looking good for this and last generation’s most popular shooter.

Quite simply, Advanced Warfare is one of the better entries in the Call of Duty series to-date, that is, if franchise fatigue isn’t getting to you by now. After all, just like an expensive mechanical military suit won’t change who you are underneath, the formula remains the same underneath this shiny new exoskeleton. I’m not sure if Sledgehammer’s innovations are enough for everyone, but it is a top-notch effort that is deserving of praise and one that proves this studio can roll with the big boys.

This review is based on the Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

New Battlefield 4 Gameplay Trailer Goes All Out For Its Upcoming Final Stand DLC

Concluding a recent gameplay event for Battlefield 4’s fifth and final multiplayer expansion, developer DICE ended things on a high note with an intense new gameplay trailer that dives into the setting and background of Final Stand.

As in previous expansions before it, Final Stand loosely ties in with some of Battlefield 4’s story elements. In this instance, intel gathered from the Chinese Army points to highly secret military base installations in Russia where experimental weapons and technologies are being developed. As developers pointed out in the gameplay live stream, Final Stand acts as a stepping stone to the future that was already realized in games like Battlefield: 2142. High-tech war machines like 2142’s “Walkers”, for example, can be seen in their early stages of development in maps like “Giants of Karelia”.

Battlefield 4 Final Stand launches November 18, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC for Battlefield 4 Premium members. Non-Premium members can pick it up two weeks later on December 2.

It introduces new high-tech weapons, vehicles, and gadgets on four brand new maps themed around the cold and snowy atmospheres of Russia and the Arctic North.

Update

New Halo: The Master Chief Collection Content Update Planned For Mid-Week

A new content update is planned for Halo: The Master Chief Collection this Wednesday, November 19, developer 343 Industries has announced.

The client side update, which focuses on Matchmaking performance, non-matchmaking bugs, and a variety of title-specific issues, has been completed and is going through testing and certification,” wrote Executive Producer Dan Ayoub in a recent update. “We are currently targeting a release of Wednesday 11/19 for this content update.”

UPDATE: According to a recent note from the studio, it looks like the update “will now be releasing later this week to allow for additional fixes, as well as the completion of the testing and certification process.”

According to data logs, previous tweaks and updates have improved online matchmaking by 20%, however, the studio is still “well aware that performance is not where it needs to be,” Ayoub explained.

We know the current Matchmaking experience is frustrating, and we continue to have various teams working 24/7 to isolate and resolve the issues to provide the best experience as soon as possible,” he continued. “We are going to continue to optimize the matchmaking experience after next week’s content update, and make further adjustments as needed. We thank you for your continued patience.”

Breakout Mode Brings The No Respawn Rule To Halo 5: Guardians, Watch a Full Match

343 Industries is bringing the no respawn rule to Halo 5: Guardians in the upcoming beta that all Halo: The Master Chief Collection owners will get to play this December.

Breakout is a brand new, paintball-inspired, round-based game mode in Halo 5: Guardians that pits two teams of four Spartans against each other in highly lethal arena combat.

We didn’t get to see much of it during the beta’s official unveiling earlier this week, but luckily, our friend “Greenskull” from Ready Up Live was able to capture a full match of the highly competitive game mode on the map Crossfire during his time at HaloFest. You can watch the whole thing above, if you fancy a look.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on it in the comments!

More Halo: MCC Matchmaking Patches Released, Content Update Inbound This Evening

Developer 343 Industries is hard at work patching up Halo: The Master Chief Collection after a rocky launch last Tuesday that’s making things difficult for users to find online games through matchmaking.

A few improvements were made yesterday and the day before, but the studio still has some work ahead.

“This morning, we rolled out tweaks that should begin to further improve the Matchmaking experience,” wrote 343 in another update earlier today. On the list of fixes were:

  • Dedicated server stability improvements
  • Laid the groundwork for upcoming Matchmaking content updates, including improvements to the team selection process

In addition, later this evening, the studio is expected to drop a content update for the game that will address non-matchmaking-related bugs, including UI, Party, and Campaign fixes.

A larger “Matchmaking performance-focused content update” is still on course to launch next week with more specifics to come.

Hang tight, Halo fans. Hopefully things will be running smoothly soon enough.

Final Stand DLC is Coming to Battlefield 4 Premium on November 18, New Teaser

Battlefield 4‘s fifth and final multiplayer expansion (if rumors of a sixth “throwback” expansion are to be ignored) is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 18 for Battlefield 4 Premium Members, developer DICE announced today.

Final Stand, as it’s appropriately called, brings the battlefield to the Arctic North with four snow-covered maps — Operation Whiteout, Hammerhead, Hangar 21, and Giants of Karelia.

New futuristic weapons appear in the form of Battle Pickups, including the Rorsch MK-1 Rail Gun and XD-1 Accipiter Drone, along with highly advanced vehicles and gadgets like the HT-95 Levkov Hover Tank, the Snowmobile, the Target Detector, and the DS-3 Decoy.

You can catch the teaser in Russian above, but we’ll replace it with the English version as soon as it becomes available.

Final Stand is included as a part of Battlefield 4’s Premium subscription on November 18 but will also be available as a standalone purchase two weeks later, on December 2, for $14.99.

New Advanced Warfare Xbox One, PS4, PC Game Server and Bug Patch Rolling Out, Users Reporting Improvements

Following Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s first game update earlier this week, Sledgehammer Games has deployed another, smaller update for the game’s Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC version that aims to improve server connections and fix a few bugs.

Unfortunately, the patch notes don’t really get any more detailed than that, but bug and connection issues in general present some of Advanced Warfare’s more pressing issues, so it’s good to see Sledgehammer taking a look at it.

Have a look at the notes here:

  • Connectivity optimization for game servers.
  • General Bug fixes and rare crash bugs.

Despite the vague list, users on have been reporting noticeable improvements. One AMD user on PC has reported “major improvement in fps and quality. Before was downsampling to 900p and at low settings, still with terrible framerates. Now I’m back up to native 1440p at medium settings, getting 50-60 fps.”

Another PS4 user has reported major improvements in “laggy” games.

The update on Xbox One is still pending, as of this writing.

For the full notes on this week’s earlier game update, be sure to visit this post here.

If you’ve download the most recent patch, have you noticed any improvements? Tell us in the comment section below!

Iron Banner 2.0 Will Return ‘By the End of Next Week, If All Goes Well,’ Team Chat Update Arrives This Monday

Much is in store for Destiny in the coming weeks, including the return of the Crucible’s Iron Banner playlist, now new and improved, as well as the highly-requested Team Chat update sought-after many Guardians.

According to Bungie Community Manager “DeeJ” in the latest Weekly Update, Iron Banner 2.0 will arrive “by the end of next week, if all goes well.”

A lot has changed since the last Iron Banner, so here’s exactly what you’ll need to know for this round of Guardian vs. Guardian mayhem:

Power. Does. Matter! (no, really)

  • Only players Level 20 and above can lead a Fireteam
  • Players below Level 20 can accompany more powerful friends
  • Players within 3 Levels can be competitive with each other
  • Your DEFENSE rating affects how you take damage
    • Wear your best (highest rated) armor
    • Players out of your league will seem like a Boss
  • Your ATTACK rating affects how you inflict damage
    • Equip your best (highest rated) weapons
    • Lower-level players wielding fully-upgraded weapons should still be considered a very credible threat!

Claim victory to gain reputation.

  • Lord Saladin now has five ranks to obtain through victory
  • Your previous Iron Banner rank has been preserved
  • The Tempered buff is a twelve-hour boost in reputation gains
  • Activate Tempered later during the event to catch up faster

Acquire exclusive Iron Banner rewards.

  • Increase your Rank to unlock better gear
  • Reforge weapons to reset progression with new perks
  • Earn gauntlets and boots to move you closer to Level 30
  • See Lord Saladin for details!

Quitters never win.

  • Reputation gains are only awarded only to the winners
  • Defeat grants a token to be redeemed after a future win
  • You can carry up to five Iron Medallions at any time
  • Partial reputation gains are earned instantly upon victory

Strike while the Iron is hot.

  • Your reputation will be reset at the conclusion of this Iron Banner
  • Like any competitive activity, each new event is a chance to regain your standing

In addition, to better serve teamwork and camaraderie amongst your fellow teammates, Bungie will be opening up the flood gates, so to speak, this Monday, November 17, with a brand new update that will introduce a beta version of the game’s new Team Chat feature.

“Navigation mode will connect you with willing allies on your side of a matchmade conflict – be it against man or beast,” DeeJ explained. “If they want to talk to you, the path will now exist. The question becomes: Will they choose it?”

“Think of this as a trial step into a more vocal world. We know that matchmade teammates aren’t the only people in Destiny to whom you want to speak. Your Mom told you never to talk to strangers. We think she was probably right, but we’re willing to provide you with an option where you need it for tactical gain.”

“Time will tell. We’ll be listening.”

Players will be able to opt-in to two different channels via Navigation Mode: Your basic Fireteam Channel that has been around since launch, or the new Strike Team Channel that will allow you to chat with players you’ve met up with through matchmaking.

And in-depth help page on everything you need to know about the new update can be found here (which, interestingly, lists the update’s arrival for Tuesday, November 18, not Monday). We definitely recommend giving it a read.

Lastly, DeeJ also made mention of a special surprise for Destiny Expansion Pass holders next week, which, judging by the featured image, appears to have something to do with emblem or player card customization.

tease

“The details are still secured in a crate,” he teased. “Early next week, the information we’re guarding will fly through the air with the greatest of ease. When it lands, we want there to be no doubt that this is for you, and that you’ll have a chance to enjoy it first.”

“We want to make sure that you traverse the next leg of your journey in outrageous style.”

Looks like we’ll just have to hang tight until we find out.

What are your thoughts on the new Iron Banner improvements and the ability to now chat with match-made teammates? Sound off below!

Halo: MCC Online Matchmaking Updates Continue, 343 Consolidates Playlists To Help Find Matches

Improvements are being made, but 343 Industries has their work cut out for them when it comes to getting Halo: The Master Chief Collection up to snuff in the online multiplayer matchmaking department.

Day one buyers have since had major troubles finding online matches, which, in turn, is also delaying our full review of the game. It’s unfortunate, but the studio has taken the time today to update fans on what exactly is going on.

“Over the past 48 hours, we believe we have identified the primary matchmaking issue, and are working on a solution right now,” wrote 343 Industries Executive Producer Dan Ayoub in an official update to all Xbox One owners. In the meantime, we’ll be rolling out additional tweaks over the next days to further improve the experience while we ready this solution. We are monitoring the data and working on tweaks that should continue to improve your matchmaking experience while we prep. In addition, we’ll be releasing a game Content Update tomorrow [November 14] that will address non-matchmaking related issues.”

Ayoub says fans can also expect “Daily server-side tweaks to continue to improve time to get into games,” as well as “Content Updates and server side tweaks over the next week focused on matchmaking.”

For the time being, the studio is consolidating online multiplayer playlists in an effort to speed up matchmaking. Users will no longer see Team Hardcore, Rumble Pit, Halo 4, or SWAT (rotational) as options. Instead, players will now see these options for matchmaking:

  • Team Halo 2: Anniversary
  • Halo Championship Series
  • Team Slayer
  • Big Team Battle
  • Halo 2 Classic
  • Halo 3

Hopefully, the concentrated playlist selection will make finding games a bit easier. Furthermore, Ayoub suggested that players back out of matchmaking if it is taking any longer than four minutes to find a game, as it will “reset the parameters and increase the likelihood of entering a match,” he explains. “I realize this isn’t ideal, but it’s temporary while we sort things out.”

I’d like to personally apologize to you all for the current situation,” Ayoub added. “I can assure you we’re attacking this from all directions from 343 Industries to the Xbox platform, and we won’t rest until it’s what it should be. People are reporting improvements across the board, which is great, but we’re not backing down until we finish this fight.”

Update

Here’s a tip from Frank O’Connor, Franchise Development Director on Halo, that might just help you out.

When you are in the matchmaking state, looking for players, make sure that the column on the right is headed by the string, “In Lobby” – Usually with gray boxes beneath, until a whole game is gathered.

If it’s in any other state, or you don’t see that it says “In Lobby” as pictured, you will not successfully join a game. Simply press “B” to back out to the main menu, then go back into Multiplayer and Find Game. You should see “In Lobby” and have a much better chance of finding a good session. These shots demonstrate “good” and “bad” conditions you should be attempting to get to.

Awkward? Yes. Sorry! But simple and a tiny band aid while we work on the bigger medicine. More news as we fix more stuff.

New Battlefield Hardline Singleplayer Footage – Hear What The Media Has To Say In These Video Impressions

Believe it or not, Battlefield Hardline, the new, upcoming cops and criminals-themed shooter from Visceral Games, does actually have a single player.

EA and the studio took an interesting route this year when it came to promoting their new Battlefield title, launching next year, leading with a multiplayer trailer, multiplayer gameplay, and a multiplayer beta on the PC and PS4 with almost no word of the game’s single player campaign. Some of it was shown back in August in an official 12 minutes gameplay trailer where we learned about some of the game’s characters, inspiration, and episodic set up, but until now, a lot of it has been multiplayer-focused (which we think is awesome).

With much of the multiplayer still in progress following the game’s delay, EA and Visceral are now showing off a little more of what to expect from the game’s single player content. Battlefield YouTube personalities, Westie, JackFrags, and Matimi0 recently had the chance to go hands-on and are now sharing their experiences, which you can watch below.

What are your thoughts on Hardline’s single player so far? Are you going to be checking it out this March?

Battlefield Hardline hits the streets on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on March 17.

PSA – 6 Hours of PSN Maintenance Scheduled For Monday, November 17

Sony has announced today that the company will be taking the PlayStation Network offline this Monday for a scheduled round of maintenance.

“We wanted to take a moment to inform you of a network maintenance, currently scheduled for Monday the 17th, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Pacific Time (12:00 PM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time),” Sony wrote in a note to the public. “We expect this maintenance to last approximately 6 hours. During this time we will deploy a series of back-end improvements to the network.”

However, if you’ve signed in to the network any time today, November 13, or after, you’ll still be able to play games online and access partner apps like Netflix, so no need to panic. What will not be available is the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home and Account Management.
