Here’s How Visceral Has Improved Battlefield Hardline Based on Beta Feedback

Wondering if all your complaints (or compliments) about last month’s Battlefield Hardline beta ever made it through to developers over at Visceral Games?

If not yours specifically, you might still be happy to know that the studio is indeed listening and has already implemented a number of tweaks and changes to the current build of Battlefield Hardline based on information gathered during the beta. Lead multiplayer designer Thad Sasser recently took to the Battlefield Blog to compile a list of these changes he and the studio are calling the “Community’s Most Wanted List.” 10 entries have been noted so far, but Sasser assures readers that Visceral “plan[s] on continuing this from now until launch – and beyond.”

You’ll see updates to movement, suppression, vehicle gameplay, and the Survivalist gadget, which is currently a rather hot topic among the community. Sasser also notes more Battlefield Hardline multiplayer news is just over the horizon, including details on new maps, modes, and gadgets, so stay tuned.

So, without further ado, see how your feedback has already shaped Battlefield Hardline below. Check out the list, and be sure to share your thoughts in the comments.

MOVEMENT

“There was a lot of feedback about slow movement speed and feeling ‘sluggish’.  We’ve increased player speed by 10%, and players will get a +10% bonus for running with your pistol out.  It feels much faster now!”

SUPPRESSION

“There were a lot of negative comments about the camera ‘bounce’ when suppressed.  We’ve changed the way suppression works – your aimpoint is no longer affected, but your situational awareness is.”

SURVIVALIST

“We’ve heard both sides of the argument on the Survivalist gadget, it is pretty polarizing.  Some of you hate it, some of you love it – either way, we agree it was overpowered.  We’ve changed it to revive you at 1 health and auto-inject after 5 seconds.”

HIGH TENSION – CRANE CAMERA SHAKE

“A number of people called out the camera shake from this event as being too over the top.  We’re tuning this down.”

HIGH TENSION – STAIRS IN HIGH TENSION BUG

“Stairs in High Tension should no longer pull players into the wall.”

ELEVATED OBJECTIVES

“We’ve added some feedback to help you find the objective when it’s above or below you.”

SPECIAL VEHICLES

“We’re working on adding more special drivable vehicles like the Fuel Truck into all maps.  We’re also working on a handbrake for cars.”

STUCK VEHICLES

“We’re working on the ability to ‘nudge’ vehicles with a melee attack to help get them unstuck or to be able to move past them.  No promises, but the early prototype looks promising!”

HEAVY VEHICLE DAMAGE

“We’ve added ‘weak spots’ in the rear of the heavily armored vehicles, making it much easier to bring them down!”

VEHICLE OCCUPANT LIST

“We’re working on adding the Bag Carrier icon to the list of teammates inside your vehicle, so that you can tell when the bag carrier gets in your vehicle.”

New H1Z1 Gameplay Commentary Highlights Crafting, Vehicles, and Combat

If you can’t get enough post-apocalyptic zombie-survival sandbox gameplay, H1Z1 developer Sony Online Entertainment may have just the thing, especially for those who weren’t quite able to make it down to E3 2014 this year.

After things have quieted down following the events, SOE and Game designer Jimmy Whisenhunt have put together this short video demonstration of live H1Z1 gameplay highlighting some of game’s core mechanics like crafting, vehicles, combat, and time of day. There’s a lot going on, so Whisenhunt offers up a ton of commentary so you don’t miss a thing.

We particularly like the way time of day and weather drastically effect the game’s atmosphere, but as Whisenhunt mentioned, it has other implications as well. Give it a watch above and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

  • Fixed an issue with viewing tutorials during end of round
  • Fixed a visual issue with Engineer drone’s decals
  • Fixed a UI issue in Gnome Bomb
  • Plethora of Map fixes for improved quality and removing areas where players could potentially get stuck

All-Star

  • We’ve made a couple tweaks to the Rugby All-Star’s weapon upgrades. With the “Longer Lasting Rugby Supply” upgrade equipped, you would very rarely overheat his gun. This has been tuned back to be more in line with the other All-Star variants. We’ve also increased the damage multiplier on the “Scrum Tested Rugby Balls”. Previously, you would only be able to see the benefits of the upgrade at extremely close range. The new tuning makes the upgraded weapon more useful at any range.
  •  The Long Bomb’s explosion radius has been reduced. The ease at which you could fire it into a crowded garden, and rack up multiple vanquishes made it a dominating ability. This will still be a viable strategy, but more precise aiming will be required.
  • ·We’ve also slightly decreased the damage on the Ultra Tackle. It’s still very powerful, but it’s no longer a one-hit vanquish on Plants with 100 health.

Cactus

  • The Power Cactus’ rate of fire has been increased. Though her electric attacks are great at dealing with groups of zombies in Garden Ops, she wasn’t as effective in competitive play as we’d like.
  • On the other hand, the Fire Cactus was a bit too effective in competitive play. Her rate of fire has been slightly decreased to compensate.
  • We’ve also made some slight reductions to the damage and rate of fire on the Camo Cactus. We intended for her to be powerful in the hands of skilled players, and she definitely still is, but now her performance is more in line with the rest of the Cactus variants.

Chomper

  • The Electric and Toxic Chompers have both received slight increases to their base damage output. We’ve also increased the time to overheat on both weapons. Like the Cactus changes, these were made primarily to bring them closer to the rest of the Chompers in terms of effectiveness across all game modes.

Doom Shoom

·         Based on a ton of feedback, we’ve added a delay to the Doom Shroom’s attack. This includes a new jump animation, visual effects and audio that play when you walk into his attack range. When you see him jump out of his pot, you now have enough time to safely walk out of his explosion radius. No more instant vaporization when walking around a corner.

Engineer

  • We’ve reduced the explosion radius on the Plumber’s weapon. This is another oft-requested change, and rightfully so. The Plumber is still one of the stronger Engineer variants, but it’s no longer as dominating.

Pea Shooter

  • We fixed an issue where you could accidently exit Hyper mode by pressing the button twice on activation. Now, once you activate it, there’s a small delay before an additional input can be accepted on that button.
  • We’ve also increased the mass of the Sombrero Bean Bomb. This eliminates scenarios in which the Bomb could be kicked away by a horde of Browncoats.
  • The Ice Pea Shooter’s freezing rate has been increased. Previously, it was very difficult to successfully freeze a target without vanquishing them in the process.
  • The Toxic Pea Shooter’s base impact damage has been slightly reduced. When his impact, explosion and toxic damage were combined, we found him to be slightly overpowered when compared to the rest of the Pea Shooters.

Scientist

  • We’ve remedied a few issues with the Scientist’s Energy Warp ability:
    • It can no longer be interrupted by The Chomper’s Spikeweeds.
    • It is no longer vulnerable to The Goop Shroom’s attacks.
    • Like the Engineer’s Jackhammer, and the Pea Shooter’s Hyper mode, it can now be prematurely exited by pressing its activation button.
  • The Chemist has seen a reduction to the size of his close-range damage area, as well as his clip capacity. The damage and weapon behavior remain the same, but in close-range situations, more accurate aiming is now required.
  • We’ve also reduced the damage of the default Scientist’s projectile. When combined with his close-range damage area, it was more powerful than intended.

Soldier

  • We’ve found that the Camo Ranger was consistently dominating matchups it shouldn’t be, especially against certain Cactus variants. To compensate, we’ve reduced his rate of fire while increasing per shot recoil. We feel that this makes the Camo Ranger/Cactus matchup more balanced.
  • Much like the Ice Pea Shooter, we’ve increased the Ice Trooper’s freezing rate. It’s now much easier to freeze a Plant without vanquishing them.

Sunflower

  • The Sun Pharaoh’s rapid-fire exploit has been fixed. Big thanks to all of you who reported this one.
  •  The base Sunflower, Power Flower and Fire Sunflower have all received damage boosts. These three Sunflowers were consistently performing poorer than intended in one-on-one matchups. This should help alleviate the issue.

Watch Kevin Spacey’s Acting Performance in Latest Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Dev Diary

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s latest developer diary dives into the animation and art direction in Sledgehammer Games’ upcoming shooter.

You get to see a bit of the studio’s performance capture sessions, including shots of Kevin Spacey in his performance suit, which doesn’t look very comfortable. But, as demonstrated in Advanced Warfare’s E3 2014 gameplay demo, it seems to be paying off by showcasing some of the most realistic facial capture techniques we’ve seen in a video game yet.

Watch the video above, and if you missed it, you can also catch the previous developer diary on Advanced Warfare’s future tech right here.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare drops this November 4 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Bungie Confirms New Location for Destiny Beta

At least one of three brand new locations have been confirmed to be featured in Destiny’s upcoming Beta on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Over the weekend, developer Bungie highlighted two screen shots of new locations that weren’t previously up for exploration in Destiny’s Fist Look Alpha. Little was provided in the way of context then, but a recent tweet from the studio confirms what looks like a location on Mars to be playable in the Beta.

Having been published as a pair, we can likely assume that players will also be able to explore this mysterious Earth-like area:

DestinyLastly, coordinates discovered on the Beta’s official website points to Earth’s Moon as another location unlocked for the Beta. Part of the Moon was playable in the Destiny Alpha, but as a Crucible PvP map, making exploration rather difficult.

Of the three new locations hinted at so far, we’re not certain which ones will be Crucible arenas and which ones will be fully-explorable areas. Either way, we’ll learn more “on an auspicious date in the very near future,” says Bungie.

Destiny’s Beta launches first on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on July 17, coming to Xbox One and Xbox 360 shortly after.

Battlefield 4 User-Created Cinematic Tools Are Unreal

Battlefield 4 may be notorious for it’s shaky launch and often buggy online experience, but it is undeniable that, built on DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine, it’s still one drop dead gorgeous first-person shooter, especially on powerful PCs.

Now, thanks to Battlefield fan and YouTuber Hattiwatti, you can enjoy soak in the beauty even more with his Cinematic Tools mod that turns a war-torn field of battle into a work of art.

“The new rewritten version brings new features like locking the camera onto weapons and bones of a player, getting rid of all borders as a spectator, freezing time, faster performance, better recording and more,” Hattiwatti writes. “The UI has been completely redesigned with help from Wirrew, making it a lot better and user-friendlier. Currently it only supports the 64-bit version of BF4, but a 32-bit version could be possible in the near future.”

Report – New Unannounced Titanfall Game Modes Discovered In Latest Update

Following the launch of Titanfall’s most recent game update, it appears that users have been able to dig into additional text and script that possibly reveals new game modes coming to Titanfall’s Featured Game Mode playlist.

RazorUK, who you may remember as the source of a number of Titanfall leaks pre-launch, has discovered the following game modes and their descriptions, where applicable, within code from the game’s June update:

  • Wingman Last Titan Standing – Last team with Titans standing wins
  • Marked for Death – Kill the marked pilot
  • Titan Tag – No description
  • Capture the Titan – Capture the Titan and bring it to your base
  • Bodyguard (TITAN_ESCORT) – No description
  • Big Brother – Attack and defend the control panel

Marked for Death is now live in the current rotation, while developer Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that Wingman Last Titan Standing would up next. Beyond those two, no additional game modes have been announced or confirmed by the studio, so take the additional information with a grain of salt. That said, it’s not surprising that Respawn might be experimenting with brand new game modes over the coming weeks and months.

We’ll be sure to update you with more Titanfall details as they come, so keep your sights locked on MP1st.

Thanks, Clay, for the tip!

The Division’s Weapons and Attachments Get Analyzed in This Impressive Fan-Made Video

Between E3 of 2013 and E3 of this year, we’ve seen quite a bit of gameplay from Massive Entertainment’s open-world shooter, whether it be its initial debut, this companion app trailer, or its E3 2014 gameplay demo.

But other than a few small glimpses, we’ve seen of the The Division has to offer in the way of upgrading weapons, customizing characters, or ranking up, all elements that make up a significant portion of any class-based, equipment-focused, and character-oriented game.

Regardless, making the most of what we have seen so far, YouTuber MarcoStyleNL was able to put together a rather informative breakdown video that dives into The Division’s weapons, weapon attachments, and weapon customization options. He lists a number of interesting info-bits that you may have missed over the last year, so we recommend giving it a watch. You can check it out below, along with our summary of confirmed and unconfirmed gear.

[youtube id=”xQF-L8TBhrU”]

Weapon Classes

  • Assault Rifles
  • Submachine Guns
  • Shotguns
  • Marksman Rifles
  • Pistols

Weapons

  • Kriss Vector – Submachine Gun
  • Mk17 SR (FN Scar-Heavy PR) – Assault Rifle
  • M4 – Assault Rifle
  • M416 – Assault Rifle
  • FN Scar Light – Assault Rifle
  • Steyr Aug – Assault Rifle
  • AK-47 – Assault Rifle
  • L85 – Assault Rifle
  • M14 DMR – Marksman Rifle
  • SRS – Marksman Rifle
  • M1014 12 Gauge – Shotgun
  • Saiga 12 Gauge – Shotgun
  • HK USP 45 – Pistol
  • PX Storm – Pistol
  • Colt M1911 – Pistol

Attachments

  • Flip-Up Iron Sight
  • Holographic Sight
  • Magnifying Optic
  • Suppressor
  • Internal Suppressor?
  • Alternate Barrel Lengths?
  • Foregrip
  • Extended Magazine
  • Adjustable Stock
  • Alternate Ammunition
  • Camo

If weapon customization is anything like Ghosts Recon Future Soldier’s Gunsmith mode, then I think gun nuts will be in for a treat when they pick up The Division some time next year. After all, it was announced last April that the team at Red Storm Entertainment would join Massive’s studio in an effort to help develop an arsenal of authentic weaponry.

What sort of weapons, weapon attachments, or other gear would you like to see in The Division?

Keep your sights on MP1st for more on The Division.

Destiny Could Outsell Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Says Analyst, Battlefield Hardline Unlikely to Sell Well

According to Cowen Research analyst Doug Creutz and research based on studies of cumulative video game preoders, Activision and Bungie’s new IP Destiny, launching this September 9 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, could sell 10 million to 15 million copies. That’s $600 million to $900 million in revenue, likely making it the top-selling title of the year.

It’s been reported that Activision has budgeted $500 million for production and marketing for Destiny over the course of its projected 10-year life span.

The analysis, backed by six years of Amazon bestseller data and NPD’s reported physical sales of games, is based on Cowen’s Ordometer, which correlates U.S. video game orders before launch and sale results after launch. Data is measured weekly, beginning during the Electronic Entertainment Expo to the end of the year for both Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

Creutz’s report mentions that Destiny has the highest Ordometer score of any game tracked over the past four years and has the chance to outsell Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, another Activision-published game set to launch this November 4 on similar platforms, but with the inclusion of PC.

According to Creutz, Advanced Warfare’s current stats are comparable to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s, which showed a slow start for preorders in 2012 but went on to become the best selling Call of Duty title to-date. Creutz writes that the “overall trajectory of Advanced Warfare remains up for debate” but that its performance may be determined in the next few weeks of preorders.

On EA’s end, Cruetz’s analysis predicts that Visceral Games’ recently announced cops and criminals shooter Battlefield Hardline is unlikely to sell well. Thus far, its Ordometer score is more in line with 2012’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter, and is only a fraction of where Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 3 were in 2011 and 2013, respectively.

You can catch the current Ordometer ratings below:

Report – Microsoft Recruiting For “a New Project Line In The Halo Universe,” Reads Ad

New reports are suggesting that a separate Halo project in development at Microsoft Studios, 343 Industries, and other teams, both internal and external, is in the works.

A recent listing spotted on Microsoft’s Careers page details an opening for a Senior Producer “to help develop a new project line in the Halo universe.” The page has since been removed, but we were able to grab a screen shot of the description prior to its disappearance.

Screen Shot 2014-06-29 at 11.01.02 PM

Other than qualities and expectations listed for the position, the description doesn’t provide any additional details. But mention of a “new project line in the Halo universe” sounds like it might not have anything to do with previous Halo spin-offs like Halo Wars or Halo: Spartan Assault and might be a completely new project, game, or movie.

Currently, Microsoft and 343 Industries are hard at work bringing Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo 5: Guardians to the Xbox One this Fall and next year, respectively, in addition to Ridley Scott’s digital series, Halo: Nightfall, and Steven Spielberg’s untitled live-action Halo television series.

Either way, it looks like fans have a lot of Halo to look forward to in the near future.

Thanks, VG247.

It’s Party Time in PvZ: Garden Warfare, Tactical Taco Party Pack DLC Launches July 1 on Xbox

Party on with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare Tactical Taco Party Pack arriving on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on July 1, PopCapHD announced today.

The free DLC includes the new Jewel Junction map, previously only available to the recently released PC version of the game, as well as a brand new game mode called Vanquished Confirmed. Much like Kill Confirmed in another popular shooter you may know, players must collect the Crazy Orbs of fallen allies or enemies in order to deny or confirm the kill, respectively. Vanquished Confirmed, as well as all other Garden Warfare game modes will be playable on the new Jewel Junction map.

The Tactical Taco Party Pack also adds eight new waves and a new challenge to Garden Ops, new character variants — including the Citrus Cactus and Berry Shooter — and a new 8 vs. 8 mixed mode playlist that includes Gnome Bomb, Vanquish Confirmed, Team Vanquish and Gardens and Graveyards.

You’ll also notice a new party matchmaking system that should make inviting, joining, and starting matches with friends a little easier.

Garden Warfare servers are scheduled to go down for maintenance early morning on July 1st for 6 hours starting 1AM PDT / 8AM GMT, but the content should be available just after.

Catch the Tactical Taco Party Pack overview above.

Garden Warfare is available on Xbox One and Xbox 360 and launched for the PC just last week. PlayStation users will get their go at the quirky shooter on August 19.

EA Sports UFC Multiplayer Review – How Does This Fighter Fair in the Next-Gen Arena?

With EA Sports UFC having entered the ring just over a week ago, gamers have had ample time to dive into the online modes and multiplayer experience. With a few dozen fights under our belt, as well as a few pints of pixilated blood spilled inside the Octagon, we feel that we have a fairly good grasp on the overall product that EA Canada was able to deliver on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Filled with both ups and downs, there is no shortage of topics that need to be discussed. Let’s get to it.

May I See the Menu, Please?

Being that your very first experience with the online portion of EA Sports UFC will be the menus, we felt that tackling things in a chronological order made sense. For the most part, everything runs smoothly. The menu system doesn’t lag as the previous THQ-developed installments of the franchise seemed to and, overall, things are laid out in a simple and functional manner.

Speaking strictly about options, however, there is one feature that we aren’t overly fond of. Depending on the game mode you choose (more on those in a moment), you may or may not be able to see what fighter your opponent is selecting. While, ideally, this would add an element of anticipation to things, all it really does is scare everyone into choosing the best fighter in the division. After all, who in their right mind would choose Mark Hunt, when you know with near certainty that your opponent is going to go with Heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez? More often than not, this results in matchups where guys like Anderson Silva end up facing off against… Anderson Silva. Matchups like that get old in a big hurry.

While we’re cool with not knowing who we are going to face, it might be beneficial to allow people to disable duplicate fighters, or even input an option to have your fighter randomly chosen. The game already allows you to search for an opponent from a specific division, so why not add in the option to only match up against other players who are having their fighter randomly selected as well? Quite frankly, this would add a lot more variety to the online bouts that often feature familiar faces.

Dos Santos

A Few Good Game Modes

Moving along through the menu system and into the game modes, there are three main online matches that players have to choose from. The first and most casual are Rivalries, where you can challenge your friends while keeping track of who has bested who over the course of many bouts. Aside from getting to belt your buddy in the face for taking an extra long look at your girlfriend when he comes over, the statistic tracking will remind him of exactly how many times you’ve whooped him since the beginning of the rivalry.

Sticking with the casual approach, but adding in a bit of randomness, Quick Match is an excellent place to get in on some intense action, yet not have your stats reflect all the bumps and bruises you accumulate along the way. Not to mention, this is the online game mode where you can actually see who your opponent decides to fight as, making sure that Georges St-Pierre doesn’t end up standing across the cage from himself. It’s also an excellent way to get an idea of what to expect when you dive into the final multiplayer game mode available.

The clear multiplayer winner for us is Championships. Taking on a tournament or season style layout, it requires players to fight a certain number of times within a period of a few days. Your opponents are randomly chosen based on similar skill levels and point values are awarded based on wins and losses. Depending on the amount of points you accumulate over the course of your fights, you’ll either find yourself promoted to a new division, relegated to a lower one, or even earning a championship at the season’s end.

This is the game mode where you don’t get to see who your opponent chooses to fight as. While the action is a big step up in intensity from anything else EA Sports UFC has to offer, seeing Ronda Rousey try to armbar herself for fifteen minutes because nobody is foolish enough or forced to choose another competitor gets old fairly quickly. Still, with that being the only flaw that jumped out at us, the good far outweighs the bad in Championships and skilled players will definitely spend the bulk of their time here.

His Arm is On Backwards

The gameplay is the make-it-or-break-it aspect of any combat sports game. If the developer gets this right, pretty much anything else is forgivable. Get it wrong, however, and no amount of menu options, game modes or polish can save you.

EA Sports UFC does a magnificent job of capturing the spirit of real mixed martial arts. Once the action begins, it won’t take you long to get completely lost in the adrenaline-filled bloodbaths. Regardless of whether the fight takes place on the feet, ground, or in the clinch, everything feels smooth and authentic. In fact, even transitioning from one to the other is a seamless experience.

The damage and stamina are both handled very well in EA Sports UFC. Target a particular part of your opponent’s body and you’ll see it swell up, bruise and even bleed. At the same time, if you think you’re just going to spam punches and eventually score the knockout, you’re dangerously mistaken. If you don’t mind your energy levels, you’ll find yourself exhausted, resulting in a loss of consciousness or one of your limbs bent all out of shape.

Speaking of dislocated joints, the real high point of the actual fights has to be the submission mechanics. The clawing, mashing, controller destroying mess that THQ adopted is long gone. The new system, a mini-game of sorts, features a well-developed mixture of skill and intelligence. Once you slap on a hold, an on-screen HUD will appear, requiring your opponent to try and escape by pushing the right stick in one of four directions. Your job, as the popper of joints in this scenario, is to quickly block them from escaping by pressing the right stick in the same direction. If you hold their attempt to break free long enough, you’ll be given the opportunity to advance the submission before eventually forcing your foe to tap out or go to sleep. Simply put, even if you prefer to knock your opponents silly, the mechanic itself is genius.

Rousey

Ingite Next-Gen Visuals

Utilizing the latest improvements in tech and visual quality, EA Sports UFC is built on EA’s new Ignite Engine. It sure helps bring fights and fighters to life with highly detailed and realistic character models, including that extra bit of visual flare like bruising over time and blood spatter. Animations look spot on and fighter models interact with each other in a believable manner.

Considering all the moving parts, it’s also impressive how the hit detection works with strikes. Even after someone is knocked out, the strikes continue to register until the Ref stops the fight. You’ll see an opponent in mid fall take a shot to the head and it will snap back. Or, a fighter fall as he’s knocked out and hit his face on your knee, which will react and respond accordingly.

A Fun Night of Fights

While it’s hard to fault EA Canada for the personalities of the people you’ll be competing against, there are some things that could have been done to eliminate a few of the bad habits that a minority of players seem determined to poison your experience with. While there are also things that are simply beyond the developer’s control, that doesn’t change the fact that they will have an impact on how much you enjoy the game, and therefore are worth mentioning here.

The biggest downer of the online fights are the way that people try and exploit certain aspects of the game. One example is constantly facing off against an opponent who simply chooses the champion in whatever division the bout is contested at. Another is when you put a proper beating on someone, only to have them quit the match before the results are final. While the latter only happened to us once in about 20 to 25 fights, the game didn’t bother to record that the fight actually took place. Not only did we lose out on a clear cut victory, we had to compete in an additional bout just to fulfill the requirements of our Championship season. We can only hope that our opponent took a loss for taking the cowardly way out.

As with most aspects of EA Sports UFC, however, the positives far outweigh the negatives. While punch spammers and Anderson Silva lovers are frequently found, the game is balanced enough to ensure that there is an answer to every gimmick your opponent tries to throw at you. Returning to the example of our cowardly foe who quit when we beat him, he was happy to stand in front of us and throw haymaker after haymaker. All we had to do was block, parry and then counter punch to turn his lights out, and hopefully make him throw his controller through the window.

Browne

4/5

While the EA Sports UFC multiplayer experience isn’t without a few bumps along the road, all is forgotten once the cage door closes and Bruce Buffer belts out his pre-fight introductions. The menus are simple and responsive, even if they do lack an option or two that could take them to the next level. The game modes, while only a few, give players all the options they need to find the type of online atmosphere they’re looking for. The fights themselves are fun, intense and can be counted on to bring out both positive and negative emotions, depending on who’s hand is raised at the fight’s conclusion. For MMA fans, both casual and hardcore, EA Sports UFC is sure to provide you countless hours of a rich and rewarding experience.

For a first bout in the next-gen fighting arena, it looks like EA has a winner.

Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark Escalation Co-Op Review

For those diehard Transformers competitive multiplayer fans looking for a sequel to the criminally underrated High Moon Studios Transformers games, you’re out of luck. Competitive multiplayer has fallen by the wayside in Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark in exchange for an improved, revamped Escalation co-op mode.

Escalation has always been a phenomenal mode in its own right, but seeing the new developer to the series, Edge of Reality, remove an element so loved by Transformers enthusiasts is a little heartbreaking. Despite that, the game serves as a tie-in sequel to both Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and the just released movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction.

As previously stated, this review will be primarily focused on the co-op mode, Escalation, where four players are pitted against waves of enemies in hopes of surviving, all while unlocking new items and ranking up. I will run through the basics of gameplay all the way through to the leveling system, challenge system, playable characters and how to unlock Gear Boxes which serves as the games “Battlepacks”.

GAMEPLAY BASICS – THE BREAD & BUTTER

If you’re familiar with either War For Cybertron or Fall of Cybertron, the previous entities in the popular High Moon Studios series, the gameplay here feels just about the same. You are given a primary weapon, a heavy weapon, three T.E.C.H. terminals, an ability and an optional hack. In terms of depth, Edge of Reality threw in a decent amount for Transformers fans to sink their teeth into. 10 primary weapons, 9 heavy weapons, 9 T.E.C.H. terminals (3 slots), 8 abilities and 6 hacks are available to unlock and use.

Most of the fan favorite weapons are back from previous games in the series along with some new additions. The X18 Scrapmaker returns alongside the Neutron Assault Rifle and the Photon Burst Rifle, among others. Whatever your play style is, from automatic assault rifles, to burst rifles, to SMG style weapons or even snipers, Rise of the Dark Spark has you covered. Two additional weapons are available via the Gamestop pre-order bonus ‘Weathered Warrior Pack’ which includes the Electro Bolter and Glass Gas Cannon weapons.

[youtube id=”3LGV5-wE5OU”]

T.E.C.H. are consumable power-ups that you can use at any time to give you an advantage in almost any situation. Each T.E.C.H. as its own unique benefits that will aid you in your struggles, and you may have multiple T.E.CH. bonuses active at once. T.E.C.H. is awarded through Gear Boxes, which are explained in a segment below, so remember to open them as soon as you can. T.E.CH. is consumed on use and can be assigned up to three times at once. You assign these hacks via the D-Pad. These vary from temporarily boosting health regeneration, to a deploy-able shield barrier, to destructive gravitational bombs and even 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 6x XP multipliers. Choose wisely, as these are depleted after use!

Unlike the T.E.C.H. terminals that expire, the abilities are something that sticks with you through each battle and each wave and is never depleted. These abilities range from a Battle Sentry that shoots at incoming enemies to a Heal Beam that heals teammates, or a Hover Slam that grants the ability to hover in the air and smash into the ground, dealing damage to nearby foes. Depending upon your play style — whether you are offensive, defensive or somewhere in the middle — there should be an ability that best suits your preferences. As for me, I’m a rusher/attacker, so I liked to use the Heal Beam since I’m taking heavy fire. It helped in most cases, but it ultimately depends on how much help you get from teammates and which wave you are on. Each Transformer has their own default ability, but once an ability is unlocked via a Gear Box, it is available for every Transformers character to use.

Hacks serve as a way to make the game harder in turn for higher XP gain. For instance, you could choose the Quickshots hack which increases your fire rate but also grants your enemies more health. This hack grants you +150% towards your XP progression. Hacks are completely optional, but if you want to obtain your goal of reaching level 25 and going into Prime Mode, it might be a good idea to tack one of these on. If you’ve got the guts, go ahead and use the No Shield Regen hack for an additional +300% XP. Hacks are available until you die or finish a game of Escalation.

Untitled

As for playable maps there are a total of 8 to choose from, which, despite being well designed, are pretty disappointing. These vary and take place on Earth and Cybertron. From a visual stand point, the Cybertron levels stand out far more than the Earth levels do, but the graphics in general are nothing to gawk at. Rise of the Dark Spark honestly could pass off as a launch title from the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 era. Most of these Escalation maps are small to medium sized to fit in with the 4-player co-op theme. There is no word whether Edge of Reality will be releasing maps in the future via DLC.

PLAYABLE CHARACTERS – THE MEAT & POTATOES

One of the impressive things about Rise of the Dark Spark is the very large playable character base. With over 40 characters, including pre-order bonuses and different variations of the same character, there shouldn’t be an issue with who you want to play as.

AUTOBOTS

        • Air Raid
        • Bumblebee (Cybertron, Earth models)
        • Cliffjumper
        • Drift
        • Grimlock
        • Hound
        • Ironhide
        • Jazz
        • Jetfire
        • Optimus Prime (Classic, Cybertron, Earth models)
        • Perceptor
        • Ratchet
        • Scattershot
        • Sideswipe
        • Silverbolt
        • Slug
        • Snarl
        • Swoop
        • Ultra Magnus
        • Warpath
        • Wheeljack
        • Zeta Prime

DECEPTICONS

        • Blast Off
        • Brawl
        • Breakdown
        • Dead End
        • Demolishor
        • Drag Strip
        • Hardshell
        • Kickback
        • Lockdown
        • Megatron
        • Onslaught
        • Quake
        • Sharpshot
        • Shockwave
        • Skywarp (Pre-order bonus)
        • Soundwave
        • Starscream
        • Swindle
        • Thundercracker (Pre-order bonus)
        • Vortex

CHALLENGE & LEVELING SYSTEMS – CHASE THAT XP

The challenge system works like your typical run-of-the-mill shooter. Doing challenges grants you XP to level up, in turn granting you Gear Boxes. Completing a challenge will also net you a Gear Box. Each completed challenge tier will grant you an even rarer Gear Box. Challenges consist of anything from Killing 100 enemies, to Killing 5 Titans or even using an ability X amount of times. With over 75 of these challenges to complete, there’s more than enough room to explore and try unique gameplay options to spice up the experience.

Untitled

The leveling system is as you would expect. It’s unified between the single player campaign and Escalation mode, so XP indeed does come in bunches. Gain enough XP and you’ll be on your way to Prime Mode, which acts as the Transformers’ way to prestige. There is no word yet as to how many Prime Modes exist, but I will gladly update this review once known information becomes available.

GEAR BOXES – UNLOCKING THE FUN THINGS

Gear Boxes contain a randomized collection of rewards that can aid you in your battles. A box could contain new weapons, weapon upgrades, characters, hacks and T.E.C.H. for you to use during the campaign or Escalation. Gear Boxes also unlock new characters and abilities that you can use in Escalation. You can earn more Gear Boxes by leveling up and completing challenges. Each challenge contains different tiers, so further completing each tier will grant you a higher Gear Box tier to unlock. As an example, completing the first challenge tier will unlock you a Bronze, while completing that challenge again will net you a Silver. These tiers range from Bronze, Silver, Gold and Prime. Disappointingly enough, rewards do not seem to be stagnant to a certain tier. You can unlock the same items from Prime boxes that you would from bronze boxes. It’s an issue that should be addressed via a patch, but this remains unlikely.

[youtube id=”C3pyISTGR7w”]

If you unlock a Gear Box and it contains a character you’ve already unlocked, it will turn that duplicate character into a disposable T.E.C.H. you can use. If you unlock a weapon through a Gear Box that you’ve already unlocked, you will earn an upgrade point to upgrade that particular weapon. Each weapon contains four unlockable upgrades.

FINAL ANALYSIS – IS IT WORTH YOUR TIME & MONEY?

Rise of the Dark Spark is disappointing to say the least. It has all the potential in the world, but falls flat on its face. From a cheap, unrewarding leveling system, to a small number of maps, not much is improvemed from what High Moon was doing last generation. Edge of Reality strikes out on this one. Is this game worth the full retail price of $60 USD? Hell no. If you can find a friend to rent it off of, that would be your best bet. Although Escalation mode is quite fun, its replayability runs dry after a few go around’s and the rewards all feel bland and repetitive and soon become so easy to obtain. With this being the only multiplayer component available, it’s hard to recommend this to anyone, even Transformers diehards. Let’s hope hope that High Moon Studios is busy in the dark prepping the next masterpiece in the series.

2.5 / 5

PROS:

+ Robust character selection
+ Gameplay stayed true to the successful High Moon formula
+ Decent depth (75+ challenges, 15+ weapons, 40 characters)
+ Beautiful transformation animations return

CONS:

– Outdated graphics
– Clunky and unresponsive vehicle handling
– Max of 15 waves in Escalation
– Gear Boxes become cumbersome to open, and the rewards become repetitive
– No stand out upgrades in terms of gameplay mechanics
– No competitive multiplayer component
– Not enough value to warrant full purchase price

This game was reviewed on the Xbox One.

Destiny Officially Rated, Development Cost “Not Anything Close to $500 Million,” Says Bungie COO

Video game publishing company Activision may be allowing a whopping $500 million budget for Bungie’s new IP, but that doesn’t mean Destiny, the game launching this September 9 on current- and previous-gen console, cost $500 mil to make.

According to Bungie COO Pete Parsons in talk with GamesIndustry, Destiny’s development costs are “not anything close to $500 million.”

By the sounds of it, the large financial backing is there to help Bungie bring their new IP to life over the course of it projected 10-year life span.

“I think that speaks a lot more to the long-term investment that we’re making in the future of the product,” he added.

“We sat back, long before we even came to our partnership with Activision, thinking about, ‘We wanted to tell a story over ten years.’ We wanted each one of these things to have its own beginning, middle, and an end, but we really wanted to step back and we can do it. We’ve done it before; we did it with Halo but we didn’t plan it out. I say plan – I don’t know how the story goes, okay? But really, think about how do we future-proof our technology? What are the kinds of things we’re going to want to do? How do we build our team? How do we even build the building that our team is going to be in?

“We have the time to start building that out and that’s incredibly powerful for us.”

In addition, we also recently learned that Destiny will be rated T for Teen by the ESRB for the portrayal of “animated blood” and “violence.” So, it doesn’t sound like there’ll be any cursing of sorts or any other suggestive material, if you were looking for a darker, more mature experience.

“We’ve always set out to make games that lots of players can enjoy, and to build experiences that matter to people,” Bungie recently told Polygon in a statement.

“For Destiny, we didn’t aggressively pursue one rating over another, though. We constructed foundational pillars that have guided development from start to finish. We wanted our worlds to be a place people felt good about spending time in. We wanted our worlds to be worthy of heroes.

“For us that meant Destiny would never be reprehensible, but rather bright, hopeful, and adventurous. That’s a world that resonates with us, and we hope it resonates with gamers, too.”

Aiming to create a universe and brand comparable to Star Wars, it’s not a big surprise that Bungie is keeping things clean with their upcoming release.

So, what sort of new game, franchise, or IP would you make with a $500 million budget? Tell us in the comments!
