PlayStation Plus April Preview – Mercenary Kings, Batman, and More

It’s April and that means a whole new month of free content for PS+ subscribers. To kick off this month we see the PS4 debut release of Mercenary Kings.

For those who haven’t heard about it, Mercenary Kings is a 2D action game that pays deep homage to the classics such as Metal Slug. It’s a fun game, but by no means is it easy to play. Aside from its classic style of 2D action gameplay, the game features a pretty deep crafting system that allows you to create many different types of weapons and perks. From the hours I’ve already spent on it, it’s definitely a title worth checking out, especially since it features 4-player co-op.

You can check out the rest of the update below, which features plenty of single-player goodness for those who are wanting some of that.

As detailed on the PSBlog:

Killzone Shadow Fall: Insurgent PackKillzone Shadow Fall: Insurgent Pack

The Insurgent is a brand new multiplayer class with two unique abilities: Steal and Hack.

  • Steal ability: The Insurgent starts out with only a pistol, but his ‘Steal’ ability allows him to swipe weapons and abilities from downed enemies. 3 New Abilities

The Assault, Support and Scout classes receive additional abilities, which have been balanced against the existing counters and abilities:

  • E-Pulse Emitter: A deployable beacon for the Assault class that sends out an E-Pulse, making it difficult for enemy units to install automata in that area.
  • Tactical Echo Emitter: A deployable beacon for the Support class that sends out a Tactical Echo from a fixed location, making the area hard to infiltrate by hidden enemy units.
  • Guard Drone: A stationary buddy drone for the Scout class – deploy it in one place and it guards the location from a ground level.

Battlefield 4 Naval Strike Now Available For PC Premium Members, Patch Notes

Battlefield 4 Premium members on the PC who have been patiently awaiting the release of Naval Strike since it’s delay earlier last week can rest easy.

According to the latest Battlelog update, the ocean-combat themed DLC featuring four new maps, five new weapons, two new gadgets, a new vehicle, the new Carrier Assault game mode, and much more, is beginning to roll out on the PC.

UPDATE 3/31: Battlefield 4 Naval Strike is starting to roll out for Premium members on PC today. We look forward to seeing you on the Battlefield!”

Check out the latest update notes from today’s patch:

Battlefield 4 March 31 PC Patch Notes

General Fixes

  • General stability improvements
  • Fix for a crash that could occur when players were customizing vehicles.
  • Fix for an issue in the Rush game mode where end-of-round screen would always indicate that there were 60 minutes left of the game.
  • Fix for an issue where the splash damage for IFV shells, Helicopter rockets, and Mortar rounds was unable to destroy deployed equipment.
  • Fix for an issue that could cause the quad bike to explode when it hit indestructible objects.
  • Fix for an issue that would cause sniper rifles to display too much bloom when aiming in snowy conditions, especially the outside areas of Operation Locker.
  • Fix for an issue where the ECM would sometimes fail to jam incoming missiles.
  • Shortened the take-off distances for jets to match the length of the runways in Second Assault maps.
  • Fix for going above ceiling exploits in Operation Metro.
  • Fix for a new MAV riding exploit.
  • Fix for kill camera jittering/strobing sometimes if colliding with other world objects or terrain.
  • Fix for soldiers getting catapulted when walking on steep surfaces

“Netcode

  • Fix for an issue where the kill camera would display the incorrect killer.
  • Fix for an issue where the kill card won’t show up when playing on servers which have the kill camera turned off.
  • Fixed an issue where other soldiers would appear to fire in the wrong direction when turning quickly.
  • Fix for weapons firing twice, or not at all in some instances.
  • Fix for an issue where explosions didn’t do any damage to infantry and vehicles that were outside of the combat area.
  • Fix for an issue where late-joining players wouldn’t correctly experience Levolution events on Paracel Storm and Flood Zone.
  • Fix for an issue that could cause packet loss.

Progression

  • Added Gold Battlepacks as rewards for Class Service Stars, allowing players that have reached the max Rank to continue earning new Battlepacks.*

*Temporarily disabled, as the team is working on addressing an issue related to it.

Weapons / Gadgets Tweaks

  • Increased the damage of the normal buckshot against targets with Body Armor.
  • Reduced the vertical recoil of the M4 and M16A4 to give these burst fire weapons a tighter burst accuracy in their mid- to long range role.
  • Reduced the side-to-side and first shot recoil of the G36C. This weapon now has the lowest side-to-side recoil of the carbines, giving it a clear controllable low rate of fire role, especially when compared to the AK5C, Type-95B-1 and the AKU-12.
  • Tweaked the detonation time of the 40mm LVG so it bounces less before going off. The maximum damage has however been reduced to 80 like the RGO.
  • Reduced the number of how many 40mm HE and LVG rounds players can carry, from 4 to 3.
  • Increased the time it takes to get new 40mm round from ammo boxes. The time is longer for HE and LVG grenades and shorter for utility grenades like SMK and FLASH.

Grenade Tweaks

  • Increased the time it takes to get new RGO IMPACT, V40 MINI, M84 FLASHBANG and M18 SMOKE grenades from ammo boxes. Since the player now carries more of these grenades, the resupply delay needed to be longer to prevent grenade spamming.

Vehicle Tweaks

  • Significantly improved the suppression from mounted vehicle weapons, including miniguns, HMGs, LMGs, and all shells types for all armored vehicles.

Aircraft Tweaks

  • Further reduced the repair rate for the Scout Helicopters and the Transport Helicopters.
  • Significantly increased the damage of Transport Helicopter miniguns.
  • Changed the flight ceilings on Gulf of Oman, Caspian Border and Operation Firestorm to better match the height of the structures in those levels.
  • Adjusted the damage of the 25mm and 30mm cannons for both Stealth Jets and Mobile AA to be equal in Damage Per Second to the 20mm default weapons. These weapons were clearly poorer choices in all circumstances, and their different rates of fire are intended to be the player’s choice factor for these weapon systems.
  • Increased the splash damage and the range at which the JDAM bombs can achieve max splash damage. The JDAM’s power was not properly balanced with its difficulty to use. The JDAM remains a primarily anti-vehicle weapon, though this change will increase the effectiveness against all targets.
  • Increased the accuracy and direct hit damage of the AC130 40mm cannons. 40mm cannons can now be used to fire pinpoint shots in 2-3 round bursts, enabling them to provide accurate fire on infantry and vehicle targets. Their velocity has also been marginally increased to aid their accuracy.
  • Increased the splash damage and range of the AC130 25mm cannons. These cannons now do approximately 50% more damage, in a slightly increased area of impact. The increased damage as well as increased suppression effects will allow the 25mm cannon to fill its role as an area of effect weapon against infantry.

Mantle

  • Mantle now requires Catalyst 14.2 or later drivers.
  • Fixed multiple crashes.
  • Fixed memory leak when switching between windowed and full screen.
  • Optimized memory management which can reduce amount of performance stalls when video memory is overcommitted.
  • Improved performance when vsync is used.
  • Fixed bug with offset mouse cursor when using full screen and horizontal windows taskbar.
  • Multi-GPU: Added initial support for frame pacing for smoother frame rate in full screen mode, enabled by default. Can be disabled in console / User.cfg with “RenderDevice.FramePacingMethod 0”.
  • Multi-GPU: Fixed black screen when starting on machine with multiple GPUs where the weakest GPU has the display attached to it.
  • Multi-GPU: Fixed intermittent crash when switching between windowed and full screen mode when having multiple GPUs

DirectX

  • Fixed bug with borderless window not covering entire screen when starting up

With the PC platform now getting their hands on Naval Strike, Premium Members across all platforms should now be able to download the latest expansion, as it was also rolled out late last week on the Xbox One.

Call of Duty: Strike Team Developer The Blast Furnace Closes This Month

The Blast Furnace, developer of 2013’s Call of Duty: Strike Team mobile game, will be shutting down by the end of the month, says publisher Activision.

“Having explored a range of options, including a potential sale of the business, and consulted with the staff about the options, we have not been able to find a suitable alternative for the talented team in the timescales set by the consultation exercise and have agreed to close The Blast Furnace,” an Activision spokesperson recently told MCV.

“Although we have reached the end of the main consultation exercise we shall continue to work with the leadership team to explore options for these highly skilled individuals within Activision and its related organisations.

“Additionally, we will be offering a number of tools and resources, including outplacement counselling services, to those who are impacted.”

The Blast Furnace opened up in 2011 and went on to produce mobile titles based on Pitfall and Wipeout, in addition to their latest and final project, Call of Duty: Strike Team.

It’s not certain what sort of online support Strike Team will continue to receive, though we suspect online services will end by April as well.

Get a Closer Look At Killer Instinct’s Fulgore

As per usual, Microsoft developers held their weekly stream discussing upcoming changes and features coming to the Xbox One-exclusive fighter, Killer Instinct.

This week’s stream discussed the recently revealed Fulgore, the final add-on character for Season One of Killer Instinct.

Developers gave a rundown og some of his mechanics, including his “Reactor Gauge” that replaces how Shadow Bar is used. View the video and breakdown above, courtesy of Maximilian Dood.

Additionally, it appears there will be a selectable ninth stage called “Shadow Tiger’s Lair,” which is probably hinting that Shadow Jago might be the boss character for Killer Instinct’s arcade mode.

Fulgore is set to release April 9 for those who purchased any edition of the game and will be made available alongside Arcade mode and online lobbies.

War Thunder Dev – Cannot Be On Xbox One Because of Cross-Platform Play

While Gaijin Entertainment is trying all they can to get the popular free-to-play air combat title, War Thunder, on the Xbox One, it seems that, for the time being, Microsoft will not allow it due to cross-platform play with PC.

Speaking with Gamespot, Gaijin Entertainment CEO Anton Yudintsev stated, “Microsoft is not allowing cross-play completely; which means [War Thunder] cannot be on Xbox One,”.

He goes on to explain that cross-platform play is essential due to the lack of install base on both the PS4 and Xbox One. The PS4 saw the release of War Thunder in Europe late last year, and although it doesn’t feature cross-play yet, this wasn’t anything to do with Sony’s policy, but rather and internal updating issue that Sony is working on resolving.

“Sony is much more open to indie developers and free-to-play games in general. So Sony has been in the free-to-play market for a few years already, they started on the PlayStation 3,” Yudintsev said. “Not only that, but Microsoft has a lot of unspoken limitations like if you want to make a free-to-play game you have to talk to an account manager and there are no set of rules; you need to communicate them; and the rule depends on the [individual account manager]. If he likes your game you get approval, if he doesn’t you don’t get approval.”

Until changes happen at Microsoft, which the team is very confident will happen, Warthunder will not be on the Xbox One.

Rumor – Are Squads Coming Back to Battlefield 4?

Squads may be returning to Battlefield 4, according to recent reports.

The feature that was originally present in 2011’s Battlefield 3 allowed players to squad up with teammates prior to a match, making it easier to enter a game on the same team and in the same squad. It has since been heavily requested after its removal in Battlefield 4.

Last year, developer DICE made it clear that the studio had no intent to reintroduce Squads, saying that the team is “not offering the old squad join feature because [they] didn’t feel that the feature in Battlefield 3 was on par with the quality that [they] wanted to offer our players”.

However, according to a discovery by Reddit user, xSty86, it may be returning after all. He recently took these screen caps from his PlayStation 3 console showing a Squads (Beta) in the main multiplayer menu.

The Last of Us Complete Edition Listed For PS4, Bundles Planned – Report

A few days ago we reported that The Last of Us may be coming to the PlayStation 4. Now, it seems that a retailer may have slipped the first details about the new edition.

Take this with a grain of salt, as Retailer listings have been wrong in the past – though some right as well. Spanish retailer Xtralife lists the PS4 version of The Last of Us as the “Complete Edition”. Judging from the listing, it appears that, as a pre-order bonus, you’ll get an official hand bag modeled after the one from the game. We assume this complete edition is planned with both he last two DLCs and the upcoming final one slated to drop sometimes this year.

Additionally, many reports have come in from Reddit users who’ve contacted Sony customer service saying they’ve been able to get confirmation of the new edition:

Bungie Teases Destiny Collector’s Edition Reveal Next Week

It’s quite possible that developer Bungie is gearing up for a collector’s edition reveal for their upcoming shared-world shooter, Destiny, next week.

In yet another weekly blog update where Bungie community manager “DeeJ” answered questions straight from the anxious Bungie community, he teased something to look forward to “next week”.

“Are you planning on releasing a Collector’s Edition for Destiny?” asked “MepmClopudFF” in this week’s bungie Mail Sack Q&A.

“Ask us again next week,” was DeeJ’s answer.

We don’t doubt Bungie’s ability to deliver, but we’ll see what exactly they have in store next week.

DeeJ, also talked a little more about Destiny’s competitive multiplayer component, saying that Bungie want’s “to know the baddest Guardian in the Tower.”

“We want to see you battle each other for glory and bragging rights,” he continued. “You’re going to practice the combat style you perfected in fighting against the Cabal’s professional military and see if it works on each other. May the odds be ever in your favor.”

We’ll be bringing you more Destiny updates in the near future, so keep your sights on MP1st.
