Battlefield 3: Armored Kill Dev on Tank Destroyers, Mobile Artillery and More

Get the lowdown on some of the brand new vehicles that Battlefield 3: Armored Kill will be introducing this September, including the new tank destroyer and mobile artillery classes. DICE lead designer Niklas Fegraeus details these machines of war.

Fegraeus states, while speaking to VG247, that Bandar Desert, the biggest map in the Battlefield franchise, takes place along the coast of a body of water not too far a way from a luxurious city under construction. He explains that here will be the focal point of most of the battles on this map as well as the artillery base which will provide a clear view of  the city.

When asked about some of the new vehicles, such as the tank destroyer and mobile artillery, Fegraeus first explained that the new tank destroyer vehicles will feature more firepower and mobility then the bulkier MBT, but in exchange for less armor.

As for the mobile artillery, it will feature long range fighting capability and decent firepower, but it will pale in comparision with the other vehicles in terms of armor and mobility. In order to rain down missiles, the mobile artillery will have to be stationary, which will also make it a big target if it is not a considerable distance away from all the action.

In addition to more vehicles being included in Armored Kill, DICE will also be adding an array of upgrades which can be used with the vehicles currently found in the game.

If you missed the latest Armored Kill gameplay trailer, be sure to check it out right here. You can also learn more about the gameplay and level design right here.

More Evidence Suggests Infinity Ward’s Next Call of Duty Will Release On Next-Gen

By now, you might have heard that next-gen consoles from both Sony and Microsoft could release next year, and that Infinity Ward is working on an “Exciting Unannounced Title” for next-gen consoles.

Dug up by internet sleuth Superannuation on Kotaku, an employee resume also points to a next-gen version of a Call of Duty game coming from Infinity Ward, presumably Modern Warfare 4 or a the first entry in a brand new series. As it’s been the case since 2005 with Infinity Ward and Treyarch alternating releases, the next Infinity Ward CoD should release next year, 2013.

Interestingly, on top of platform names like “XB2” (Xbox 360) and “PS3” being mentioned, this upcoming CoD title is also set to release on “PC DX11” and a platform that is still “TBA.” It was also mentioned that Infinity Ward is working on a “new high-end DX11 code base.

These clues seem to wreak scents of next-gen. What do you guys think? Would you like your next Call of Duty experience to be on next-gen hardware? Let us know in the comments below.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may have been in the hands of gamers for several months already, but Sony is hoping that the uber-popular FPS will help them sell a few more PlayStation 3 consoles overseas. Oh, and they’re also throwing a nice new coat of paint over top of it as well.

Amazon France has listed a silver PS3 console that comes packed with Activision’s and Infinity Ward’s latest Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 3. Set for release this August 14th, the price tag of EUR 299.99, or roughly $364.82 USD, will get you the following:

  • A copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

There is still no word if the bundle will ever make it to North American audiences or the rest of Europe, however. For now, you’ll just have to settle for these images:

Report – BF3 Premium Members Will Not Have Access to Battlefield 4 Beta

Since the official reveal of Battlefield 4 beta access through Medal of Honor: Warfighter first print, EA has confirmed that there will be other ways to access the beta, but it seems being a Premium member isn’t one of them.

When asked whether Battlefield 3’s premium members will be granted access to the Battlefield 4 beta, the official Battlefield Twitter account stated, “Premium members will not have access to the Beta for Battlefield 4, but there are certainly other ways to get it!”

Also, in response to the same fan, the representative added, “there will be other ways, but at this time that is the only way to get it,” referring to beta access included in Medal of Honor: Warfighter Limited and Deluxe Editions.

Another representative, drilled on whether Premium players will have access or not, clarified, “Right now, the only way to guarantee access is to preorder Medal of Honor Warfighter.”

A few weeks ago, DICE revealed that Premium had reached 800,000 members within the first two weeks on the market.

Keep in mind, this piece is labelled “report” as this is in no way official confirmation since many different EA representatives handle Battlefield’s official Twitter account.

We reached out to EA for further clarification.

Resident Evil 6 – The Origin of 4-Player Co-op and the Fate of PvP Multiplayer

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayash reveals the origin of 4-player co-op in Resident Evil 6 and hints at plans for more player-versus-player action.

“Just to make clear: We weren’t setting out to create this 4-player co-op experience,” Hirabayash told Game Informer in a recent interview.

“That wasn’t the goal from the beginning, but we had all these stories that we want to tell and we wanted a way for them to intersect and give you a different perspective on the stories that are happening for the other characters. And then we thought, ‘Well, just having the stories themselves, just the stories, is kind of boring.’ We wanted a more interesting way of getting that to the player. So we thought, ‘Well, if that was actually playable, it just didn’t happen in the cutscenes, but that it was playable. Then the two groups of players playing together, that would be interesting.'”

While we await more details on this feature, make sure to check out our thoughts on Resident Evil 6 co-op.

So, it looks like you can thank Resident Evil 6’s multi-faceted story arch for the additional 4-player co-op feature. But, what about adversarial multiplayer, something that was introduced (Sucessfully? Unsucessfully? You tell us in the comments below) through DLC in the previous Resident Evil installment? While it was not a focus of the Capcom team this time around, Hirabayash tells Resident Evil fans not to worry.

He explains, “for us, especially Resident Evil 6, the campaign, the main story, that’s where we put the majority of our resources and energy, and that’s where we want to keep the focus on the game. But we understand that gamers out there enjoy a little player-versus-player action. We understand that’s important to them, we do understand that. So, while I can’t go into any specifics, just know that we understand that that’s an important aspect of gaming, so… don’t worry.”

Would you like to see the Capcom team take another crack at adversarial multiplayer? Things might go a little smoother this time around thanks to the revamped controls. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Resident Evil 6 hits PS3, PC and Xbox 360 October 2nd.

Human Element Prequel Coming Exclusively to the OUYA Gaming Console

You may have recently heard of a little project called OUYA, a brand new gaming console for TV currently in development and powered by Android.

With a set goal of $950,000 on OUYA’s Kickstarter page, over 40,000 backers have already pledged an insane $5,377,121, at the time of writing, with 17 days still left to go. Apparently, gamers really want to see this happen and so does studio head of the newly formed development house Robotoki.

Not only has ex-Infinity Ward Creative Strategist Robert Bowling pledged $10,000 of his own money to the project, but he also announced a prequel to his upcoming title, Human Element, coming exclusively to the OUYA.

“Robotoki is the first studio to commit to building a game exclusively for OUYA: an episodic prequel that will set the stage for his eventual release of Human Element in 2015,” writes Julie Uhrman, head of the OUYA project, in a recent update.

Bowling recently talked to VentureBeat about his announcement and the decision to take such risks:

…this is exactly what I’m excited about. This is the type of stuff that I want to invest in. The stuff that is trying to do something new, something innovative. Something that’s going to encourage us as designers to get outside of our comfort zone.

He continues, reflecting on the advantage of being a smaller, independent studio:

Could I have made this decision a year ago working on Call of Duty? Possibly not. But this is what being independent, being small and being nimble, is all about. We’re able to make commitments like these and take bigger risks. And what I like about Ouya, and what encouraged me to commit to it, was the fact that Ouya is different. We’re able to rapidly prototype stuff that’s much more cost-effective, and much less risk averse, than what we could have ever done committing to some other platform.

Bowling details the Human Element Prequel, the OUYA’s first first-party exclusive, in this video below:

Battlefield 4 Available For Pre-Order On 360, PS3 and PC, New Medal of Honor: Warfighter Hardshell Case

Battlefield 4 is up for pre-order!

Various retailers have begun listing Battlefield 4 for pre-order for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Though the Battlefield 4 Beta has already been confirmed for this generation of hardware, these listings further solidify the fact that Battlefield 4 will be available the Xbox 360 and PS3 along with high-end PCs. The question is, will it ever be listed for next-gen hardware? We can only hope.

Pay no mind to the estimated release date as it is surely innaccurate. Future Shop (image below) lists it for a 12/31/2013 release date.

Thanks, Brad, for the tip!

Additionally, those who pre-order Medal of Honor: Warfighter from Amazon will receive this nice little treat: a slick, tin case featuring scary soldier guy who you don’t want to mess with! This is, of course, on top of the previously announced Battlefield 4 beta access that is included with all pre-orders Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

Are you going to be pre-ordering Battlefield 4? If so, what platform?

Modern Warfare 3 Major Updates Incoming: Terminal Issues, Matchmaking, Weapon Tweaks and More

Another busy week of Modern Warfare 3 news: from PS3 and Xbox 360 Elite subscribers receiving their respective July drops including all 360 gamers getting the free Modern Warfare 2 map Terminal, to Infinity Ward Executive Producer Mark Rubin revealing some big updates on the horizon.

Previously I reported on this month’s Content Drops, how spawns work and other news, which you can view right here.

Major Updates Incoming

Earlier today, Rubin confirmed a number of fixes are on the way and that some have already gone live for some platforms. From matchmaking tweaks to weapon buffs and nerfs, this is what he said:

MW3 Update:
Lag Comp (Xbox & PS3) – TDM has some settings that replicate to an extent MW2 lag comp settings. More to be done here. Moving to all playlists soon. Probably sometime next week barring any issues. PC is still being worked on as well but is a different code path.

Matchmaking (Xbox) – Domination has a new matchmaking schema. It no longer uses Hilbert regions but rather country code based on your IP. Improvements to that coming in upcoming patch. But if you have been matchmaking a lot with people from other countries please try this out and see if it is better.

Spawning (All) – Faceoff maps have had more spawn points added and a slight tweak to the logic. Should reduce the amount of spawn trapping. But the maps are small so spawning will always feel dangerous. Part of the fun of the mode. A full re-write on spawn logic is in the works but will be some time before it is ready.

DLC – Terminal is out for everyone on Xbox. I’ll be able to announce the date for Ps3 and PC sometime soon pending PR approval. Probably next week or so. Yes Terminal will be free for everyone just as it is on Xbox.

PS3 DLC Issues – Some of the issues with PS3 DLC have been resolved. There are still isolated cases of people losing their Elite Subscription (me included) and also of some DLC content that seems to be either unplayable or un-downloadable. We are still working with Sony on those issues. Hit up @candyslexia for possible solutions for DLC issues.

Weapon Balance – We have started our pass on weapons here at the studio and are testing out some changes. We are just hitting ARs and SMGs at first. Our current philosophy on this right now is not to nerf but rather to buff those weapons that are under-performing. Not sure yet on the eta of when these changes will go live.

Playlist Updates – I don’t have any info yet on Playlist updates just yet. Hoping to get to that soon.

Candice Capen, Community Coordinator for Modern Warfare 3, also replied to a question I asked her regarding Team Tactical and general playlist changes to which she responded, “compiling a list of things I want changed when we do the playlist overhaul” and is currently being discussed.

Terminal 24/7 and General Issues

Update: Mark Rubin, recently asked about Terminal 24/7 playlists, answered that he is “looking into that possibility. Just figuring out best timing.”

When asked about whether or not Infinity Ward would consider having a Nuketown 24/7-like event for Terminal, Candice remarked that there will be no playlist dedicated to the map but continued saying she’s “going to weight Terminal higher throughout the playlists so it comes up more.”

We reported earlier that a Care Package glitch and other new issues like getting on top of the plane have started appearing. Luckily, they appear to have been noticed by Infinity Ward and some hot fixes are on the way to fix some obvious glitches as Candice confirmed, “we’re fixing the one where you can get on top of the plane.”

She also confirmed that the ‘Disable DLC’ option will not affect Terminal in a future update, stating, “we’re going to add an update that addresses this.” Terminal is expected to be a “mandatory update” for all Xbox 360 users, regardless if you want the map or not.

A previously patched exploit has returned: console controller buttons showing up in names, specifically in Elite Clan Titles. Players have managed to find a way to implement controller button images. Rest assured, Infinity Ward and Beachhead Studios are working on a fix.

Matchmaking & Lag Compensation Update Results

Over on the Call of Duty forums, Infinity Ward developer Ghandi has been posting news regarding their attempts to smooth out lag compensation with a series of hot fixes for frustrated players which were tested on Team Deathmatch and Ground War playlists. This is what he had to say:

Generally there have been mixed results. More people are reporting an improvement in TDM than a degradation. In GW it’s a wash. We have three settings in test internally with additional instrumentation code added that we began significant testing on under various simulated lag, NAT, packet loss and jitter and ISP conditions. We are looking at each and measuring which is provides the most accurate results. This will be pushed live soon.

They have managed to achieve some improvements but still require more testing over the next few days in order to push a global fix for every playlist. In a later post, he also announced that a new Face Off spawn change is expected “to go live soon.”

Further matchmaking improvements have been tested throughout the past few days and those results, plus more updates, are expected over the weekend and into next week.

Other News & Remarks

A Terminal release date for PS3 and PC has not been announced. Candice reassures that the map “will arrive [for PS3 gamers; PC unconfirmed] next month,” and a release date for both August Content Drops and Terminal will be revealed at a later date.

Regarding maps from Modern Warfare 2 to make an appearance on it’s successor, Candice reaffirms that “[there are] no plan for more MW2 maps at this time” but continues by saying, “we have more new MP maps coming though!”, which probably refers to the last remaining multiplayer maps, which we reported here.

As a side note from Modern Warfare 3’s Tina Palacios, Senior Community Manager at Infinity Ward, she tweeted out yesterday that the Infinity Ward website – which has gone long untouched since the Activision vs. Jason West & Vince Zampella exodus and only showed a splash page of it being “currently redesigned” – is finally getting some love. She posting a screenshot of the new website. We look forward to the new look!

Another week of Modern Warfare 3 news recapped. We’ll update this article if any further news has been announced, but if you have any comments or questions, please post in the comments section below.

Have you been enjoying MW2’s Terminal with MW3 gameplay on the Xbox 360? What changes would you like to see regarding weapon re-balancing? Post a comment below or head to our forums to discuss with other gamers!

Battlefield 3: Armored Kill – All Map Names Revealed, More On Gameplay and Level Design

DICE Senior Developers Niklas Fegraeus and Gustav Halling give Battlefield fans a deeper look into the upcoming Armored Kill expansion pack, revealing all four new map names.

So, what is Battlefield 3: Armored Kill all about, asks EA France’s Battlefield 3 TV? According to Fegraeus, “Armored Kill is about the epic scale Battlefield – the big big war that Battlefield is so famous for.”

One key feature that the latest DLC, Close Quarters, brought to the Battlefield was HD Destruction, a more detailed and compact form of what the Battlefield series has become known for. But, what about Armored Kill? What is it introducing to the series? “I think the key feature of Armored Kill is the epic battle,” explains Fegraeus. “It’s how we produced the huge maps and these large scale warfare. That’s the key feature. But it comes to life through all the small things that we’ve added – the new vehicles, the new modes, the new game mechanics.”

He adds, “in Armored Kill we have four new maps. We have Death Valley, Armored Shield, Bandar Desert and Alborz Mountain,” of which the latter two were shown off in the latest Armored Kill gameplay trailer which we highly recommend you check out right here!

Battlefield 3 Lead Developer Gustav Halling hard at work tweaking what could be Armored Kill’s Bandar Desert.

Speaking to Battlefield 3 TV, Gustav Halling details what sort of gameplay you can expect from the upcoming expansion pack: “We have 20 vehicles on all levels. We place them around, divided into each base. We’re going to have quad bikes, tanks in home base, but also, you’re going to be able to capture bases to get new tanks, for example, or to get a gunship.”

Level design in Armored Kill will obviously differ from that of vanilla Battlefield 3 maps and, especially, Close Quarters maps. “Since you have to cover so much more area, you really have to use vehicles very tactically and squad play very tactically,” mentions Fegraeus. “You have to play defensive, and also, you have to really plan your attack because sometimes.. ‘okay, so we’re going to take that flag,’ and two tanks are guarding it, and that’s not something to take lightly. You need to really plan ahead and be really tactical about your approach:” words of wisdom to take with you as you enter the epic, vehicular-based expansion pack.

Where the “Epic-ness” is created

Fegraeus was also asked what type of influence the community had in creating this particular expansion pack. As it turns out, quite a lot. “Yeah, we always listen to the community,” he says. “We have lots and lots of feedback coming in and I think one example in Armored Kill, I saw on a forum, one person who actually had an example of what he thought, “you know, this would be an awesome idea for a big map,” and I think he was actually right. I think it was a really good idea. So, one of the maps in Armored Kill is heavily inspired by that. So, that’s just one example.”

Look forward to Battlefield 3: Armored Kill this September!
