Why I Didn’t Enjoy CoD: Black Ops, Despite Its Popularity

In my previous article, I discussed my displeasure, my disgust, and my contempt for the horrific game that is Modern Warfare 3. No, wait a minute.. I didn’t say anything like that? As it is surprising to testify in that piece, I actually really enjoyed the latest game to further escalate the Modern Warfare franchise. But what was personally unexpected was that some readers completely agree; despite the frustration of matchmaking, the grievances of  lag compensation, and the irritation of the spawn system – a good few gamers are either in the same boat or at least in the same naval fleet.

However, perplexing and confounding as it sounds, I did not enjoy nor seriously actively play Black Ops, instead opting for previous (and more ‘broken’) Call of Duty titles like Modern Warfare 2. Why? A swathe of reasons, of which I’ll thoroughly discuss and convey my point to those who might be thinking “man, this guy [substitute word here (e.g. sucks, is silly/stupid, etc)] for disliking Black Ops!”  Hear me out though..

Era of Black Operations

As with any Call of Duty game – or any high-octane action game – single play and campaign stories are pretty much written to be epic. No matter how cliché and silly they seem, you’ll see me enjoying them regardless. I personally enjoyed the pseudo-war backstory of Black Ops; the Cold War era is a very interesting timeline. Politically and historically, those pages of the ‘World Conflict’ book can be so engrossing to read and study: governments secretly blanking out names and information as ‘classified’ so the World (which was on a knife edge of nuclear war) doesn’t notice, and the obvious but awash with espionage that was ‘black operations’. I was hyped, pre-release, that I could get the opportunity to be able to play in both campaign, Zombies and multiplayer modes in that particular environment.

The Cold War environment with multiplayer war and conflict, ironically, works. So it’s not the actual era that I’m disgruntled with. Whenever I, forcefully, go back to play Black Ops with friends as a change of pace, I still feel a slight ‘tingle’ inside that I’m experiencing the Black Operations in a game. And I’ll say right now: Zombies, while not always my cup of tea, has nothing to do with this argument. Zombies is a separate entity to multiplayer; I enjoy it as much as you do.

Connectivity & PS3 “Port”

I’ve always, and still do, thought the post-release connection issues were much more frustrating than what the Modern Warfare 3 issues are like. Hailing from the United Kingdom and in a broad area where a lot of the Scottish population live in, I don’t normally have my own connectivity issues. But something about Black Ops felt like I did: I tried everything from port forwarding (which I never have to do), to forcefully changing settings that my router really didn’t require or like. To no avail though; it’s still very hard to explain even now (because I still get the same issues) but it feels like the game really doesn’t want me to play. Think of your Modern Warfare 3 issues with lag compensation and “1-second-behind bullet” – that’s what it feels like Black Ops seems to do to me, perhaps slightly worse.

Regardless of connectivity issues, Treyarch – while always denying it – seemed to have made a really shoddy Xbox 360-to-PS3 port.  Their claims of “we had a team working exclusively on a PS3 version from the ground up” were nonsensical. Why? Because the Sony platform played extremely poorly compared to playing the 360 one – and this isn’t me talking a lot of drivel: I actually went out and bought the “superior” copy for the Xbox and it played so much better. I don’t know why, but it just did. Perhaps a problem Sony issue that they require to fix? But that wouldn’t make sense when multi-platform games like Assassin’s Creed, Red Dead Redemption and even Modern Warfare 2 played so smoothly and without hassle. Perhaps a problem with Treyarch’s “porting” team? In fact, Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar recently came under fire from PS3 fans for such things which you can catch up on right here.

Decent Games; Slow Gameplay

But enough of the petty bashing on Treyarch and connections. Here is where I describe the actual gameplay. It wasn’t always irritations and annoyances: of course I would get some good runs on Domination or Search & Destroy. However, the majority of my gaming time was being carried by my confused team mates, who always thought I do pretty well, and team-playing and capturing objectives. Except they weren’t confused.. they had the same issues (side note: not the same people as I mentioned in my previous article, but those guys also have the same problems as I do).

Something about the actual gameplay really doesn’t quite fit with my play style. Something about it feels ‘sluggish’ and doesn’t match the smooth and fast-paced action I loved in Modern Warfare 2, World at War and CoD4 multiplayer. Every single match I experienced at post-launch, mid-launch cycle, and when Modern Warfare 3 was released felt percularly the same: slow. I mean, I know the Cold War era was all about slow-paced governmental action and patient espionage – but not that slow! As I mentioned in my previous article, I’m a hard semi-rusher (e.g. I don’t run blindly into their spawn) filled with a “tactically and strategically capture objectives” mood. Black Ops just didn’t want someone with that particular play style to like the game despite even forcing myself to swap to a slow-paced player, it just spat it out. Maybe thanks to the connection issues? Hmm..

The maps? The maps were actually pretty well built. I have no beef with any of the maps, even Nuketown, because some played very well. Sadly, the actual gameplay brought down the fun and that had a knock-on affect with how I enjoyed the maps.

Lacklustre & Boring

I’ll come out and say this right now: the game got very boring after a certain point. It wasn’t the usual “I’ve played too much” kind of repetition. It was just the plain old “this game makes me yawn”. Certain things contributed to that though – I’m not silly by just saying that without a reason.

COD Points and being able to unlock everything right from the get-go, while a very interesting idea pre-launch, made the “I must use this gun to unlock said attachment or gun camo” redundant. And I liked that! Sure, it promoted boosting, but there are other ways to combat that (simple list: disabling tactical insertions, no joining people in FFA games, etc). In Modern Warfare 2, I got much more satisfaction by unlocking Red Camo legitimately for my F2000 or Vector than just earning a couple thousand COD Points in a few wager stand-offs or public matches and then unlocking outright. Games that reward you by doing an ‘x’ certain amount of ‘y’ with gun ‘z’ appealed so much more than just buying everything in one go. It felt like a very cheap and boring way to play a game, in my honest opinion. And it promoted people using one gun all the damn time where players wouldn’t experience other guns – and don’t get me started on that, that’ll be a future article!

Completing challenges was another thing. You got XP and COD Points, but that’s all superficial. Where is my emblems or titles? Oh wait, I can create my own one amongst all the other stupid custom-created emblems which were always genitalia, hate/discrimination or distasteful Nazi flags. Sure, I got creative with my own one: a Scottish Saltire and the Lion Crescent fixed to a military rank background. It was cool and all, but didn’t belong in Call of Duty. You give the community something like that, and it’s gonna get misused by people who think it’s cool to wear and promote (I really hated to see pre-18 year old thinking imposing the Nazi Flag was a good idea).

What About Black Ops II?

Errhhh… an inevitable question. Yes I’ll be buying it (mainly for the continuation of the story and Zombies) but with all these multiplayer rumours about this and that, it really isn’t making me excited. And usually at this point of the previous COD mid-cycle, I’m modestly hyped for the next game. Even the environment isn’t really appealing to me this time: the near-futuristic settings looks odd, hazy and.. brown.

Well there you go: the insight of why I really [CLASSIFIED] hate Black Ops. Okay, maybe not so much that and more [CLASSIFIED]. Maybe the “numbers” is a code to decipher the perfect way to enjoy Black Ops? Nah, I’ll go back to playing Modern Warfare 3.

So, what are your thoughts and memories of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops? Do you share the same feelings?

Black Ops II – Did Treyarch Move To The Future To Make CoD Interesting Again? New Sound Clip Teased

Treyarch’s John Rafacz details the reasoning behind Treyarch’s move to the near-future in Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

It’s been said before that moving to a brand new setting is one way to imitate innovation in a video game series that has stayed stagnant for too long. There are those who would criticize Treyarch for making such a move what with Black Ops II’s story being predominantly told in the near-future of the year 2025.

When asked in an interview with VG247 whether or not the move to the near-future was simply to “make call of duty interesting again,” Rafacz made it clear that “the decision to go the the future was really about answering the question: ‘what can we do to push the boundaries of story telling in a way that makes sense for us as creative professionals’.”

However, not only does the move to the year 2025 greatly effect the story-telling, it also has meaningful ramifications on the gameplay. Rafacz explains, “all the while, the near-future setting benefits us from a new realm of gameplay and weapons that ultimately benefit the players.”

Let us know in the comments below. Do you think the move to a near-future setting was simply made in order to give the Call of Duty franchise that refresher?

We can expect to hear more about Call of Duty: Black Ops II at this year’s Games Con, according to Rafacz.

In other news, Treyarch lead developer David Vonderhaar releases another audio sample of Black Ops II, leaving exactly where it’s from a mystery. We speculate it could be a rank-up sound or some sort of unlock notification in the multiplayer. Give it a listen and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Modern Warfare 3 – ‘Clan Challenges’ Feature Finally Hits Elite

A few days ago, Moriarty spotted a Clan Challenges page on Elite, but unfortunately the challenges weren’t active as it seemed that Beachhead was preparing for the launch.

Earlier today, tipster Man2Bfree noticed that the ‘Clan Challenges’ section has been added to the Compete menu. Beachhead also released a FAQ  about the feature. (Posted a few answers below, or you can find it in full here.)

Keep in mind, the feature may might not be live for everyone, as the Challenges section is still empty for me at the time of writing. However, several friends confirmed that the section is populated, and the first Clan Challenge, titled ‘Modern Warfare 3: Efficiency”, will begin at 1pm EST.

First three answers from the FAQ:

1. What are Clan Challenges?
Clan Challenges are milestones for Clans with at least one Premium member based off of specified MW3 accolades or stats that can earn Clan XP rewards and badges for your Clan. Clan Challenges are split into two types: Daily and Weekly and must be enlisted in by your Free or Premium Clan Leader.

Only clans with at least one Premium member in the clan at time of enlistment will be counted for Clan Challenges.  When the Clan Leader enlists in a Clan Challenge, only the clan members that are currently in their Clan at the time of enlistment will count.

2. How do I participate in Clan Challenges?
In order to participate in Clan Challenges, your Clan Leader will have to enlist your Clan on the Clan Challenges Details page, found in the Compete section.

Note: Only clans with at least one Premium member in the clan at time of enlistment will be counted for that Clan Challenge.

3. Who is eligible to participate in Clan Challenges?
Free and Premium members are eligible to participate in Clan Challenges so long as the Clan has a minimum of one Premium member in the clan at time of enlistment.  Only clan members that are currently in their Clan at the time of enlistment will be counted.

For example:  If a Clan Leader enlists at 9am PDT for a Clan Challenge that begins at 12pm PDT, only members who were already in the clan before 9am PDT will count.  If a member joins this clan at 10am PDT, they would not be counted.  However, this clan member would be eligible for subsequent Clan Challenges.

Black Ops II – Treyarch Dev Responds to Xbox 360 Favoritism Claims From PS3 Camp

Update: The thread has been deleted. We couldn’t find a cached version of Vonderhaar’s quotes, but here is the only one we had left open.

Original Story: One thread titled ‘BO2 on PS3: Lack of Developer Interaction and Dialogue’ on the official Black Ops II forums has attracted 208 replies, many of which came from disgruntled PS3 fans who are not satisfied with Treyarch’s way of handling the community on the platform.

This is understandable as the dodgy launch of the original Black Ops on the PS3, and the infamous Microsoft Activision exclusivity deal, have contributed to the overall dissatisfaction of the fans.

However, Treyarch’s Game Design Director, David Vonderhaar, decided to weigh in on the discussion, as spotted by MP1st reader Mimzymoo. Before we get to Vahn’s quotes, we encourage you to read the complaints posted on the thread (no longer available, here’s a cached version of the first page), as these will either justify Vonderhaar’s reaction or not. You be the judge of that.

Here are all the quotes from David Vonderhaar on the thread. He began his rebuttal by stating;

And you seriously wonder why I don’t enjoy talking to you? You’ve been throwing me under a bus this entire thread.

[Complaining] that I tweeted about Xbox Live problems to Xbox Live fans is really a new low-point for you. When the PSN melts down, I’ll be doing the same thing. Oh right, I did do that when the PSN melted down.

It’s fine. I am a big boy and a few of you are not so great at making friends. When you think about changing your ways; I’ll think about communicating with you more often.

In the meantime, I’ll be doing the same thing I did last game, rolling with my own platform-specfic game crews to check the health of the game in the real world. That crew [still] won’t include anyone from the PS3 forum community whose primary post count deals with taking jabs at me.

Later, Vahn responded to forum user thebigb59, who’s concerned by the lack of PS3 developers from Treyarch being active on the forums. Vahn explained;

Very few people are spokespeople and permitted to talk to the community. We have 3 community people who manage the forums on a day to day basis.

Many developers, PS3 [specific] and otherwise, are on the forums. I know because they link me threads all the time. They lurk because they are not really supposed to post in the first place; and they lurk because of the negativity that can surround them when they make themselves known.

If the PS3 lead(s) wanted to post on the forums because he found it useful or enjoyable, we would probably let him after some media training. He doesn’t.

My PS3 crew on Black Ops 1 contained a Canadian, an Englishman, a Scottsman, and 2 Americans. I found them via Twitter. They were people who were having problems with the PS3 that I was trying to work out. One of them also happened to be a forum guy.

I burned through a couple of people to find these 5. I ditched anyone who fanboyed or trolled. I liked working with the guys so much that I invited them to my house. I’ll probably be doing the same thing this year.

I don’t surround myself with people who blow smoke up my ass; and I don’t surround myself with people who hate on me, Treyarch, Treyarch developers, or the game.

If you want developers on the forums and better communication, then clean up and self-police your community better.

Vahn further clarified his stance on the subject of platform favoritism to everyone.

I get it. I’m not blind. I understand. If I didn’t understand, or cared, I wouldn’t have posted in the first place.

Some of you, not all of you, micro everything I have to say as continued evidence that Treyarch (or I) have it out for non-Microsoft platforms. Or, as I’ve seen often, twist my words to represent your agenda or point of view.

Or, you might toss in a few jabs words about something [totally] unrelated such as our panel at Cod XP, or a Tweet I made about problems over a million people were having with Xbox Live and our game(s).

In this building are a lot of hard working people who care about Wii and work on it every day, just as we have many hard working people who fight for the PS3, or are constantly trying to make the PC game a strong PC game.

You wanted to know why you aren’t getting intel. So, I’m telling you.

That’s one reason. It’s certainly the primary reason why I personally don’t spend much time in sub-forums. The other reason is that I am busy working on the game and don’t have much time.

The other reasons include business considerations and PR / [communication] strategies, which no line level developer has anything to do with, can’t comment on, doesn’t know the details, and probably doesn’t care or have time for because he or she is working on trying to make a solid game for the platform(s) that developer represents.

Vahn, then, replied to two specific quotes from user Mizanur who’s worried about the general improvements on the platform, but Mizanur did use some harsh words in expressing his stance.

Mizanur: It’s pretty sad you can’t tell us something specific that is being done to make the game perform better.

We haven’t talked about this on any platform. It’s not part of the communication strategy. We haven’t even revealed MP yet, let alone get into this kind of detail.

Mizanur: Shocking really considering we [paid] for nearly half your wages.

This is exactly the kind of comment I’m talking about. You can’t seem to make a statement or point without getting a jab in. That sort of straight up negativity is why you are [frequently] ignored. It takes one stale statement to ruin an otherwise perfectly reasonable question.

I’m just telling you what you need to be successful if you want me to communicate with you. That isn’t the way.

How do you feel Treyarch has handled the PS3 community in general? Are Vonderhaar’s responses justified?

Battlefield 4 – EA Answers The Burning Question, “Why Not Battlefield: Bad Company 3?”

EA Community Manager Ian Tornay answers the burning question on many Battlefield 3 players’ mind, “why not Bad Company 3?”

You may have heard that, only a few days ago, Battlefield 4 was officially announced by Electronic Arts – more accurately, access to the Battlefield 4 beta in Fall 2013 was announced as a pre-order incentive for the limited or deluxe edition of Danger Close’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

It seems Tornay has been busy managing reactions to this announcement. Only yesterday, he addressed concerns of pacing, ways to access the beta and fan-requested features that the team behind Battlefield 4 recognize as an essential part of their next project.

He also answers the burning question, “why not Bad Company 3?” – a title that many assumed was next in DICE’s line up of first-person shooters.

Tornay explains via Reddit, “I can tell you that it’s not due to any lack of love for BC inside of DICE. Everyone I’ve talked to there is very proud and fond of it.” He also goes on to ask “what features from BC would you like to see in future games (which is not to say we won’t make another)?” revealing that another title in the Bad Company series is not off the table entirely.

What would you have preferred, if anything else at all? Bad Company 3? Battlefield: 2143? Or, something entirely different? Let us know in the comments below!

Battlefield 4 – Fan Requested Features Recognized, Pacing Concerns Addressed and More Ways to Access Beta

EA Community Manager Ian Tornay details some of the key featured the DICE team will be focusing on throughout the development of the recently announced Battlefield 4 and addresses concerns of the pacing of major Battlefield releases.

In case you haven’t heard, Battlefield 4 is official and there will be a beta for it next Fall (2013) with every pre-order of the limited or deluxe edition of Danger Close’s upcoming FPS title, Medal of Honor: Warfighter. This is not to say it will be the only way to gain access to the beta as Tornay also mentioned “there will be other ways to get into the beta aside from MoH Warfighter. At this time, however, it is the only way to guarantee entry.”

Other than these details, little is known about the next entry to the Battlefield series and we are not expecting to hear anything until this November or later, after the release of Warfighter, according to this Origin product page. (Later removed. Cached version below. Make of this what you will.)

If you’ve been able to catch any of the reaction to the official Battlefield 4 announcement, you’ll most likely have heard phrases like, “it’s way too soon!” A reaction that many gamers currently share. Tornay addresses these concerns via a recent Reddit post:

We’ve been seeing a lot of concerns about the pacing of release (i.e. “only” two years after BF3). I think it’s worth noting that DICE has released a Battlefield game every two years or sooner AND Mirror’s Edge at least every two years. I truly believe that we’re in one of the best positions to be creating our next title – Frostbite 2 has matured, we’ve been gathering fan feedback like crazy, Battlefield 3 continues to expand with features which we can learn from, and we’ve got more data about how people play than ever.

He also lists the key features that members of DICE “recognize that there is a serious desire for, including but not exclusive to”:

  • A better VOIP solution
  • Battle Recorder
  • Spectator Mode
  • More robust eSports support

What are your thoughts? Is Battlefield 4 arriving too soon? Are you happy to see these features being focused on this time around? Let us know in the comments below.

Borderlands 2 – Length of Campaign Revealed, Details on the ‘Badass System’

Borderlands 2, successor of the action packed RPG first-person shooter Borderlands by Gearbox Software, will boast a phenomenal 58-hour campaign. Yes, you read that right – 58 hours of content according to Gearbox’s VP of Marketing, Steve Gibson. And that’s just for one of the five character’s available.

In today’s first person shooter market, a 58 hour campaign is extremely impressive to say the least, when the norm in this day and age for this genre is to contain relatively short campaigns consisting of 10-13 hours max, like most AAA titles.

In an interview with GamerZines, Gibson also goes on to say that all of this will be on a PvE system and that the PvP aspect of the game is being scrapped due to it not being popular enough to stick around for the sequel. For those of you who enjoyed the PvP aspect in the Borderlands and wonder why they came to this conclusion, Gibson answers, also detailing what exactly will be taking its place.

It was hardly used, so what we invested in instead was the co-op stuff. Like the “Badass Ranking System” is kind of a measure of stick which says, ‘Look how awesome I’m doing in this world.’ So what we’ve invested in rather than Arena stuff is drop in/drop out split screen co-op, and being able to readjust your quest line a little to match up with other players.

To go into further detail of the Badass Ranking System and how it works, it  is essentially a feature that will net you points, or in this case, ‘Badass Points’ which can be converted to Badass Tokens. These points can be gained by doing death-defying feats, or simply Rambo’ing your way through Pandora’s many foes.

When you earn enough tokens, you will be able to permanently unlock stat-boosts for ALL of your characters in your profile. For example, some of these may include having a bigger grenade blast radius or upgrading the amount of damage your weapon deals.

Not only are these permanently unlocked on all the characters to your profile, but they are also stackable to each one, which will make it much easier if you were to start replaying the game on a new character.

For those who are still on the fence on this new feature and would rather not use it, the fine folks at Gearbox has stated that this can be turned off at any time you want to.

In case you missed our recent articles on the new game play featuring the revamped Sanctuary town and Stash feature, we got you covered. Also, make sure to check out the latest trailer released by Gearbox called ‘Wimoweh

Borderlands 2, is slated for a September 18th release on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
