Battlefield 4 Confirmed, Beta Access Through Medal of Honor: Warfighter Pre-Order Incentive

Pre-Order Medal of Honor: Warfighter to gain access to Battlefield 4 Beta, reads a banner on EA’s Origin client. Under the Shooter category in the client, the banner appeared earlier today.

You may recall that the first print of the last Medal of Honor game, the “limited edition” as it was dubbed, included tokens for access to the Battlefield 3 beta. Further, since Medal of Honor: Warfighter will have the same incentive for Battlefield 4, the next game in the Battlefield franchise may release next year. It would be far fetched for EA to include beta codes in Warfighter for a game that’s more than one year out.

Interestingly, the Battlefield 4 Beta banner shows the Digital Deluxe edition, as it’s priced at $69.99, the limited first print edition will run you $59.99. Beta access could be only part of the deluxe edition, but that possibility seems unlikely based on EA’s track record. Also, the Digital Deluxe edition is exclusive to PC players, you can learn more about Medal of Honor’s different pre-order bonuses through here.

It should be noted that  Battlefield Bad Company 3 is rumored to be in development through a resume leak.

Thanks to MP1st reader Ron for the tip!

Update: The banner has been taken down and replaced with a Battlefield 3 Premium banner.

Battlefield 3 Lead Designer Resigns From EA-Owned Development House DICE

Lead designer on 2010’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and 2011’s Battlefield 3 David Goldfarb leaves the EA-owned, Swedish-based game development studio DICE after 5 years of work. “5 years, 4 games. Grateful to have worked with such awesome people on awesome games. Farewell + Onward,” he tweeted yesterday.

He also told Kotaku, “It was time to move on for me.” However, he reassures that “fans have nothing to worry about.” DICE is in good hands and is working away at completing a set of DLC for the recent Battlefield 3 with the vehicle-focused Armored Kill expansion pack being just around the corner.

Other than this, DICE has yet to announce any future plans for either the Battlefield or Mirror’s Edge series, though rumors of both Battlefield: Bad Company 3 and Mirror’s Edge 2 being in development have been spotted.

Though Goldfarb has yet to mention any of his own future projects, he has been blogging about a potential film script or novel he’s been drafting since the late 90’s:

Today and yesterday I worked on cleaning up and reframing chapter 1 and 2. Mostly what this was was coming to grips with the old style of the book, which is this thing a friend of mine called ‘Biblepunk’ for lack of a better word. Or Old Testament noir. Anyway. It’s weird, and it’s especially weird revisiting it as a writer and being like, how the hell am I going to get myself back in that creative headspace again.

Whatever the future may hold for you, sir, we thank you for your hard work on of some of our all-time favorite FPS titles and wish you nothing but the best.

Homemade Real Life Battlefield 3 C4 Detonator Accessory

Getting a C4 kill is quite a satisfying feat in itself in the world of Battlefield. But apparently, its just not satisfying enough for one Battlefield 3 player in particular.

On the PC, Redditor Thedr001 has cleverly retrofitted a few pieces of hardware together in order to muster up this real life C4 detonator (sort of) that you see in the image below.

We know this guy will enjoy blasting fools in Battlefield 3 with a satisfaction unachievable by a mouse and keyboard. Lucky for him, he’ll have plenty to blow up in the upcoming Armored Kill expansion pack.

Would you buy an accessory like this if it ever became mass-produced?

Fortnite To Be Powered by Unreal Engine 4, Will Ship “Exclusively For PC”

You may remember a little game called Fortnite, whose interesting and quirky debut trailer aired last year.

Here’s a quick refresher:

[youtube id=”2GSfjeYVpkQ” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Essentially, Fortnite is a cooperative shooter in which players must build defensive structures during the day in order to fortify their home base as it becomes under attack from shadow-lurking creatures during night fall.

However, there is now more to this game than meets the eye. During a recent Comic-Con panel, Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski announced that not only will Fortnite ship “exclusively for the PC,” but it will also be the first title ever to ship powered by the brand new Unreal Engine 4, according to Joystiq.

Check out the Unreal Engine 4 demo showcase below, all in real-time, of course:

[youtube id=”OZmRt8gCsC0″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

“Next-gen’s here. It’s been here. It’s a high-end PC,” stated Bleszinski during the panel.

To learn more about Fortnite, you can check out their official website that recently went live as well as these screens below (thanks, PC Gamer).

Only 50% of Medal of Honor 2010 Players Carried Over To Battlefield 3

Only about 50 per cent of Medal of Honor 2010 owners played Battlefield 3. EA believes that the Medal of Honor community prefers “more authentic shooters.”

“We are very careful that Battlefield and Medal of Honor stay differentiated,” EA Labels president Frank Gibeau told Game Informer magazine via Video Gamer. It’s interesting to note that makers of Battlefield 3, DICE, also developed Medal of Honor’s multiplayer component.

“While there is an inefficiency to having two different brands coming out alternating like that, there is some upside. You don’t have the annualized, sequel fatigue. With Medal of Honor we tried to embrace that the game is ‘real’. The multiplayer is different than Battlefield. We’re trying to use a sequencing strategy to keep it as fresh and different as possible.”

“The Medal of Honor customer is different than the Battlefield customer,” stressed Gibeau. “We can see what users play. Only about 50 per cent of players from the last Medal of Honor played Battlefield 3. When we talked to them, they said they liked the brand, more authentic shooters, and the story. So we are reaching a slightly different audience. The trick is figuring out how to grow both of them together.”

Recently, Danger Close’s Greg Goodrich broke down the differences between Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Battlefield 3. It boils down to the “size, scale and the scope for the military units,” you can read the entire piece here.

Does the 50% figure surprise you, considering that tokens for early access to the Battlefield 3 beta were included in MOH 2010’s first print?

Assassin’s Creed III – Wolf Pack Co-Op Mode Announced, New Multiplayer Screenshots

During the Comic Con San Diego, Ubisoft announced a brand new multiplayer co-op game mode titled “Wolf Pack” in Assassin’s Creed III.

IGN confirmed that the game mode would support up to four player and work very similar to Horde Mode. In total there are 25 sequences, each sequence gets more and more difficult as you progress. NPCs will be able to set traps, gang up, and fight back in any way possible to avoid being assassinated by your co-op team.

Targeted NPCs also travel with other regular NPCs that look exactly the same, which may cause players to attack the wrong targets. If this happens, then synchronization points are decreased.

Down below are some new screenshots showing off both the Wolf Pack mode and normal competitive Assassin Mode.

Name A Multiplayer Mode In Medal of Honor: Warfighter

Danger Close wants you to name a new competitive game mode in Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

“We knew that we wanted a game mode that was as rewarding to play as it was exciting to watch. Quick rounds with no respawn abilities were established early, and getting the national flags to be a central part of gameplay was a given once we saw the overwhelming response to the Global Tier 1 concept,” wrote EA’s Creative Director, Kristoffer Bergqvist, on mode’s promotion page.

The mode that desperately needs a name was  dubbed “Sport” internally at Danger Close, as the team “wanted a game mode that was as rewarding to play as it was exciting to watch.” The team on attack have “to force its way through narrow choke-points in hope of grabbing one of the two flags set on the defenders’ side, then bringing it back to the starting area.

“The majority of the combat happens at the beginning of the round while the attackers are fighting to cross the defensive lines. If the defenders fail and let the attack through, they’ll need to switch tactics when closing in on the attackers’ escape routes. Fail a second time and they’ll lose that round,” explained Bergqvist.

On the flip side, the attackers are tasked with “either slamming through one choke-point or splitting up the defending team using diversion tactics. Stick close to your Fire Team buddy and coordinate the attack to break through the defensive perimeters!”

The unnamed mode seems like a cross between Counter-Strike’s Bomb/Defuse (or Call of Duty’s Search and Destroy) and Capture the Flag. Danger Close is hoping to break into the E-sports scene with this mode, and from the sound of it, they are on the right track

“Our vision is to create a tense, violent, and addictive game mode—one that makes its way onto the E-Sports scene and takes the Medal of Honor franchise to the next level of competitive warfare,” concluded Bergqvist.

Head on over to the Facebook promotion page to submit your suggestion.

The winner will be announced in August, and the promotion will run starting from today through July 26th.

Here’s some examples from Danger Close to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Sport
  • Flag Run
  • Gauntlet
  • Warfighter Trials
  • Training Camp
  • Assault Arena
  • Strike Contest
  • Urban Arena
  • Tier 1 Cup
  • Tactical Games
  • SpecOps Showdown
  • Proving Grounds

Battlefield 3 – Armored Kill’s Bandar Desert Inspired by BFBC2’s Atacama Desert and Arica Harbor

DICE developers look to Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s Atacama Desert and Arica Harbor for inspiration when it comes to building the largest map in Battlefield history, to be included in the upcoming Armored Kill expansion pack.

“Me and my colleagues had already discussed how cool it would be to re-create Atacama Desert and Arica Harbor from Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in the ever improving Frostbite 2 engine,” says Jøran Holberg, Designer at DICE, in the latest issue of Inside DICE. During the release of Battlefield 3 last October, Holberg was asked by the Operations team if he had any ideas for “Xpack 3”, aka Battlefield 3’s third expansion pack, after Close Quarters.

While it would have been nice to see the two fan-favorite BFBC2 maps “get the Frostbite 2 treatment” in an expansion pack for Battlefield 3, Holberg figures, “they would really only classify as medium sized maps in Battlefield 3 and I was certain there were still loyal Battlefield fans whose needs we hadn’t met yet – those who loved to play on the very biggest of maps in Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2 (such as El Alamein and Fushe Pass).”

After receiving the okay to “go big,” Holberg and team went to work on recreating those Battlefield experiences of old.

He mentions, “when it comes to gameplay, we here at DICE have been enjoying Atacama Desert in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 a lot, just like many of our players. I started thinking about how the best parts of the gameplay on Atacama could make the transition to a new map like Bandar Desert.” He recalls some of his favorite aspects of Atacama Desert – “the mix between the built up village areas with lots of destruction and the barren desert where tanks and other vehicles were in their strongest element. Out there, vehicles could duke it out between the sand dunes, using them in large strategic maneuvers to hide or partially hide, protecting the lower parts of the tank when firing. There were also always a few areas where infantry could have the upper hand at times without making it hard for vehicles to enter the area.”

Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s Atacama Desert

However, Holberg explains, “in Bandar Desert, supporting 64 players and jets, everything would have to be larger and build much more on vehicle gameplay on a grand scale than Atacama Desert. At the same time it should be scalable for consoles with fewer players without it leading to compromises for the 64 player version.” So, a few requirements were set out in order to compliment the gameplay of Battlefield 3:

  • Support grand scale vehicle gameplay with freedom of movement at long range
  • Provide exciting dogfight gameplay for jets in huge mountain ranges
  • Contain diversity in gameplay and intensity between different themes
  • Offer a great visual diversity both in terms of palette and character
  • Support all game modes without compromise
  • Differ from the other three maps in the expansion both visually and in gameplay (I knew what the other maps would be after initial design discussions)

Holdberg goes on to explain just how big Bandar Desert, the map shown off in some of the latest Armored Kill footage, really is.

“In Conquest Large, Bandar Desert is stretching as far as 1,900 meters from U.S. to Russian deployment, not counting the airstrip at the very end of the ground forces combat area. This is even longer than Fushe Pass from Battlefield 2. Bandar Desert is about as wide as it is long at the middle flags – it measures 1,900 meters from the mountain base furthest from the sea  all the way to the beach at the south edge of the map.”

But it doesn’t stop there! He continues, “As a comparison, Caspian Border is roughly 1,100 meters between the U.S. and Russian deployments — around 800 meters difference both in width and length. Should you count the distance between your spawned jet and the enemy spawned jet, you will end up with 2,400 meters on Bandar Desert. From the closest capturable flag to the furthest capturable flag, you are looking at around 1,200 meters. For Caspian Border, the equivalent distance is just about 400 meters.”

So, get in those empty servers and start practicing your piloting and tank driving skills! Armored kill hits the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this September.

Report – Modern Warfare 3 September DLC Maps Spotted?

Earlier today, Infinity Ward announced July’s Elite Drops to include two brand new Modern Warfare 3 adversarial multiplayer maps, Offshore and Decommission, on top of the already mentioned Spec Ops mission, Vertigo. Click here for some neat images and descriptions of the new drops set to release on the 17th of July.

What comes as a nifty surprise to us is that these two maps, Offshore and Decommission, correspond with a rumor posted on the MP1st forums by our own Fahed Jaradat, originally leaked back in June. How these images may have been obtained? Most likely similar to the way footage of Terminal was, as explained by Mark Rubin.

These rumors include images (shown below) of a number of MW3 maps suggesting their inclusion in upcoming MW3 DLC.

Our earlier report indicates three new maps to be making it to MW3 in September’s Elite drops (for Xbox 360 Elite members, October for PS3 Elite members) which could very well be the maps left over in the list below — Terminal already being confirmed last week for a July 17/18 release.

(Note from forum post author: “Please keep in mind, some of these names might be code names and are not final. Also, two maps don’t have in-game loading screens, but stock images for internal reference.”)

Modern Warfare 3 Xbox 360 July Elite Drops Detailed, PS3 Drops Dated

Infinity Ward has announced today that Modern Warfare 3 players with premium Elite subscriptions on Xbox 360 will receive two new multiplayer maps, Offshore and Decommission, and the already outed Spec Ops mission Vertigo on July 17th.

These three drops will release on July 17th along with Terminal for Elite members. Terminal will go live for everyone the next day, July 18th, and it will be free to download.

Here are the screens released and the map(s)/mission synopses as listed on the official calendar:

Multiplayer Map – Decommission
  • A graveyard of rotting [or add decommissioned here] ocean liners has not only given birth to a shantytown of locals, but a mid-sized Multiplayer Map populated in chokepoints; providing the perfect setting for shoreline-based combat.
Multiplayer Map – Offshore
  • Trapped on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, you have nowhere to go but directly at your enemies in this new Multiplayer map boasting helipads, cranes, and countless perches for snipers eager to pick off the competition. Did we mention to look down or else you may fall off?
Spec Ops Mission – Vertigo
  • The luxurious “Oasis” hotel in Dubai hosts the latest Special Ops mission, in which players must use laser-guided RPG’s to dispatch waves of helicopters. Utilize rooftop advantage to defend from waves of enemies, before parachuting to a ground-level exfil point.

PS3 Elite members, on the other hand, will have access to Face Off maps, Intersection, U-Turn, and Vortex, and Spec Ops mission Arctic Recon on July 19th, according to Mark Rubin. You can read more about the PS3 drops here.

New Grand Theft Auto V Screens, Game Development Going Well, and No Beta Plans

Rockstar Games has updated fans on how GTA V is coming along. The publisher also confirmed that there are no beta plans for the title

In the latest Asked and Answered session with fans on Newswire,  Rockstar had the following to say about the game’s development:

“What is going on with GTAV?”
We are very busy working on the game! Everything is going well, but the game is a huge project. We should have more information and some new assets for you soon.

“Why don’t you give us more news?”
As we have said before, we have often had long gaps between asset releases on previous games and will continue to do so in the future. We are sorry if you find this frustrating, but please understand, we don’t do this because we ‘don’t care about our fans’ ‘don’t respect our fans’ ‘hate GTA fans etc’ – precisely the opposite! We do it because we want to make sure we only release 100% correct information, and because we want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it. The only things we care about are that you enjoy the experience of actually playing the game and that we release accurate information. We just have not been in a position to show more of the game than the trailer and will not be for a while yet. We did, however, manage to sneak a quick screenshot out for you… it’s not much, but we thought it was pretty fun.

“One thing we’ll say definitively though is – there is absolutely no ‘beta’ test for the game. If you see ads or solicitations to join a beta program, beware as this could be a dodgy online phishing scam,” Rockstar added about beta plans.
