Halo 4 – 343 Industries On Infinity Slayer and Ordinance Drops

Developers of Halo 4, 343 industries, shed more light on the new Infinity Slayer game mode, a new addition to the upcoming Halo 4.

According to The Halo Bulletin, Infinity Slayer, which is essentially another team slayer game mode for Halo 4, adds it’s own twist compared to previous installments of the Halo franchise, one of the more obvious ones being a 60 kill limit (600 points) instead of 50. Here, each kill rewards your team with 10 points. However, one of the key new differences in Infinity Slayer is a new feature that makes random power weapons drop anywhere on the map, thanks to Halo 4‘s new Infinity Ordinance feature.

This is a newly added feature to the Halo series, which makes every match feel unique due to the weapons not having a set spawn and being constantly moved to a new location. Either that, or they are replaced by another power weapon every few minutes. For example, that shotgun that was leaning against a wall is now either replaced by a sniper rifle or any other power weapon in the Infinity Ordinance weapon drop cache. It could also simply be moved to another location to prevent players to camp out for these power weapons.

In addition to having Infinity Ordinance added in Halo 4, there’s also a new feature to be added called Personal Ordinance. This is essentially the same as Infinity Ordinance, but these drops are player controlled. This means they can be called in after reaching the requirements for the Personal Ordinance – by getting a set amount of medals.

These medals can be earned by completing various tasks like getting kills or completing team support tasks like playing the objective and getting kill assists. With each medal you gain during a game, it will start to fill up your ordinance meter, and once it’s full, you will be awarded with Personal Ordinance of your choice to be dropped at your location.

However, unlike Infinity Ordinance, Personal Ordinance is also capable of dropping power ups. This includes three power ups: the Over Shield, a Damage Boost and the Speed Boost. These power ups, as you may figure, have a set limited duration and work really well with the weapons. Speed Boost, for example, not only makes you move faster, but also makes you reload your weapons noticeably quicker as well. You can learn more about upgrades, tactical packages and armor abilities here.

Not only do these power ups give your character a boost, but they have an aesthetic value as well. Each power up gives your character a different color glow on their armor, with Over Shield giving you a green one, the Damage Boost giving you a red one, and finally, the Speed Boost giving you a blue one as well leaving a small trail on your character when it moves.

The only draw back of Personal Ordinance is that the requirements for your second or third one in the same game are bumped to 30% for every successive ordinance you have received.

That’s all for now. Make sure to check out some of the latest Halo 4 multiplayer footage right here!

Remember to pre-order your copy of Halo 4 at your favorite video game retailer before November 6.

How Modern Warfare 3’s Spawn Logic Works, Face Off Weekends, July Content, and Much More

It’s been another good week for Modern Warfare 3 news; with the upcoming July drops for both PS3 and Xbox 360 scheduled to be released imminently, Terminal making its re-appearance in the Modern Warfare series next week, and another new game mode for Face Off this weekend.

Last week, I reported on more Terminal information, further Matchmaking updates and Infinity Ward’s position on the controversial discounted Content Collections which you can read all, plus more, here.

July Content Drops

The Executive Producer at Infinity Ward – Mark Rubin – tweeted out earlier this week that he will be announcing the date and content for this month’s DLC Drops “this Thur[sday]” roughly “10am PST”.  As we reported here, two multiplayer maps and one Spec Ops Mission – Vertigo – will be arriving for Xbox 360, while PS3 will be getting three Face Off maps – Vortex, U-Turn & Intersection – and Artic Recon this month. You can read more details on the latter maps and Spec Ops Mission over here.

The recent PS3 matchmaking patch also silently added the trophies for Artic Recon, so we expect PS3 to get these drops in a few weeks. The popular Modern Warfare 2 map – Terminal – is still scheduled as a “separate drop” for Xbox 360 players to arrive July 17th for Elite subscribers, 18th for everyone else. We expect Terminal news for PS3/PC players to arrive sometime after the map releases on Microsoft’s console platform.

How the Spawning System Works – Simple Clarification

Spawning has been a fiercely hot subject for a number of games – and it’s not just limited to Call of Duty.  Battlefield, Uncharted, GTAIV, racing games and many other games have their own fair share of issues regarding spawning, but while spawning affects universally, Call of Duty remains as the most controversial game regarding its spawn logic.  From spawning no where near captured objectives to spawning in a fire fight, how exactly does the system work? Mark Rubin answered the question in basic terms:

So yea Spawning. There are X number of spawns per map. Each one gets weighted depending on based on enemy locations, friendly locations and visibility to any killstreaks. It has to spawn you when you hit the button. So it looks at all the values for those spawn points and puts at the one with best number. The system is really simplistic and definitely needs work. But when you spawn at a given point it’s the spawn that the logic felt was safest. Which relative to other spawns it may be even if it doesn’t feel like it. Also many times the spawn check and spawning in happens a split second before the KS appears/launches. So I could launch a predator pointing somewhere else on the map, you spawn and I slew the predator on you at that same second. There is no way for the code to know that 1 sec from now that is going to happen. Anyway hope that little insight on how spawning works helps.

While acknowledging that the spawn system requires more extensive work, Rubin makes the valid point that the system has to decide factors, which in turn would spawn you in a split second. Having so many variables to decide, it’s bound to spawn you somewhere you didn’t want to be spawned, but the system logically thought it wouldn’t be dangerous for you. As mentioned in previous articles, the spawning system is one of the three main things that are being worked on for improvements in future updates, behind matchmaking and lag compensation.

Face Off Weekend Game Mode

After the successful début of Search & Destroy and Team Defender on the 2v2 and 3v3 Face Off playlists, the next game mode is expected to be Domination.  However, I asked Candice Capen – the Infinity Ward Community Coordinator – last week regarding why Domination wouldn’t make an appearance for that weekend despite being the second voted-for mode, and I got a response saying “we tested it [Domination] and it wasn’t too good. [We] need to rearrange some flags before we push it to live [for Face Off].”

Mark Rubin responded to a question this week on the same subject to see if they managed to refine Domination, and whether it would be released for this weekend. He stated, “I think Dom[ination for this weekend]. But not sure yet,” and continued that the mode requires more playtests. “Have to sit with the peeps here [multiplayer designers] and chat about it,” he concluded.

Other News and Remarks

Infinity Ward tweeted out that a minor hot fix has been implemented to fix an out-of-the-map exploit on the Face Off map Vortex for the Xbox 360 platform, stating “Hot fix released this morning to Vortex for players being able to get into unintended cornfield.”

I asked the Exec Producer regarding more game modes for the Team Tactical playlist, such as Headquarters. While not the most populous playlist, its 4v4 Mosh Pit-styled intense-action on most maps have a select few game modes, some requiring tactics like Domination and Capture the Flag, while others do not like Team Deathmatch. However, Headquarters, Sabotage, Team Defender and Drop Zone are excluded out of Team Tactical.  He mentions that it’s “possible” but he’s “not sure at all though” and again citing that they will be “do[ing] a review of the playlists [soon].”

Black Ops implemented something new, for players to train on against bots, called Combat Training.  When asked about whether or not MW3 could have bots to train against, Rubin responded “Not going to happen for MW3,” but also elaborated saying that “It’s not something that could be added with a simple patch. Patches are limited on what they can do.”

The “balance pass” is still scheduled to take place within the next couple of weeks. The aforementioned mid-cycle ‘refresh’ will be looking at buffing and nerfing weapons, deathstreaks, pointstreaks, equipment and anything else deemed appropriate. Mark Rubin has stated previously that “they [Candice, Tina, multiplayer designers have been monitoring the [Call of Duty] forums [for potential weapon buffs and nerfs]” and will be “sitting down” soon to discuss changes sometime “next week.”

Another week of MW3 news round-up complete. We’ll add more if relevant but if you have any questions or comments please leave it below!

PS All-Stars Battle Royale – More Info On DLC, Multiplayer Modes, and Patching Process

During Evo 2012, SuperBot Entertainment took to their panel to discuss some of their plans for DLC, how the online would work, and revealed more details on game modes.

For patches, such as for character tweaks, the team will be collecting data that is automatically collected from multiplayer matches. This allows them to monitor and see if any characters are overpowered, or if there are any types of bugs in combos and such.

One thing that the developers are currently addressing is the online infrastructure. The team wants to make sure that there are no “slowdowns” and that it’s the same “across the board” for every player.

As of now the character roster consists 10 characters with additional characters being announced at Comic Con. Superbot plan is to have as much content packed into the disk and after launch they’ll work on adding characters that they have missed. These will be based on “demand and other factors.”

As for online game modes, so far they confirmed 6 modes at the panel. Multiplayer modes:

  • Singles
  • Doubles
  • Free For All (Customization options: Timed Mode, Stock Mode, Reverse Stock Mode)

Rumor – Microsoft is Among Potential Activision Buyers

Vevendi, the majority stakeholder of Activision Blizzard, has began “testing the appetite of possible bidders.” Vivendi has a 60 percent stake in the biggest video game publisher, Activision Blizzard. Interestingly, Microsoft’s name has come up in the list of potential new suitors

“Although a formal process has not started, bankers close to Vivendi are sounding out cash-rich trade players, including China’s Tencent and U.S. duo Time Warner and Microsoft, as well as private-equity heavyweights KKR, Providence and Blackstone,” Reuters‘ sources claim.

The French conglomerate’s stake in Activision has an estimated price of 10 billion dollars.

Leaked Mass Effect 3 “Earth” Multiplayer DLC Details

Earlier today, BioWare announced yet another multiplayer DLC for Mass Effect 3 simply titled ‘Earth’.

No details were announced other than it would, once again, be free and will drop on the 17th of July (at least on the Xbox 360).

However, leaked details spotted by forum user Gibbed, describe some of the “N7” weapons and classes that will be made available in the new Earth-based multiplayer DLC. A new game mode was also announced titled Platinum.

N7 Classes:

Adept – N7 Fury: Throw, Annihilation Field, Dark Channel

Fury: “Fury operatives use implants to fuel biotics and their incredible movement speed. These operatives wind an unpredictable path on the battlefield, moving in and out of combat before returning to unleash a sweeping biotic attack on their unsuspecting targets.”

Soldier – N7 Destroyer: Multi-Frag Grenade, Missile Launcher, Devastator Mode, T5-V battlesuit?

Destroyer: “The Destroyer’s T5-V Battlesuit gives these strong-but-slow soldiers mech-like protection. Driven by eezo-assisted actuators, these frontline troopers carry heavy weapons onto the battlefield.”

Engineer – N7 Demolisher: Homing Grenade, Arc Grenade, Supply Pylon

Demolisher: “The Demolisher uses grenades to attack at range and to terrorize the battlefield. Demolishers can also create a supply pylon that stocks allies with an unending reserve of grenades and thermal
reloads.”

Sentinel – N7 Paladin: Snap Freeze, Incinerate, Energy Drain

Paladin: “The Paladin carries a powerful omni-shield onto the battlefield to block enemy fire. The Paladin also uses the shield as a heavy-melee weapon that, when modified with incindiery or cryo upgrades, creates a devastating combination attack.”

Infiltrator – N7 Shadow: Tactical Cloak, Shadow Strike, Electric Slash

Shadow: “Shadow infiltrators use implants to dramatically improve agility, making them slippery combatants on the battlefield. Their monomolecular blades are a menace from cover and close range.”

Vanguard – N7 Slayer: Phase Disruptor, Biotic Charge, Biotic Slash, has a guddam sword

Slayer: “Slayers use implants to dramatically improve mobility. Their dizzying sword attacks can hit multiple opponents, and the Slayer’s ability to slip fire makes them hard to pin down on the battielfield.”

N7 Weapons:

Typhoon light machine gun:

Piranha assault shotgun:

Medal of Honor: Warfighter Multiplayer Trailer Analysis, A Better Look at the HUD, Support Actions and Much More

Early this morning, Danger Close and EA released a brand new trailer for Medal of Honor: Warfighter showing off some intense new multiplayer action in the Tungawan Jungle set in the Philippines. If you missed it, make sure to check it out right here!

You can also catch our previous multiplayer trailer analysis back when the multiplayer was first revealed. It might be a good idea to catch up and lean about some of the recently announced features as well which will not be included in the analysis below.

So, let’s take a look at some of the things we can find in the brand new trailer that Warfighter’s multiplayer will have to offer. As usual, let us know in the comments below if there’s anything we missed so that we can update this piece with your finds.

Analysis:

Welcome to the jungle!
The new MoH: Warfighter HUD

The image above reveals the Medal of Honor: Warfighter multiplayer HUD for the first time in all it’s glory. You can see some of your pretty standard features like your bullet counter at the bottom-right and your mini-map and equipment at the bottom-left. The top left features your selectable support actions, which we learned were class-specific earlier. The top-center seems to house the match score info while the top-right houses your Fire Team information as well as a kill feed. What I particularly like is the clean score counter in the center of the screen. It’s small, dark and unobtrusive. You’ll notice later that this same philosophy applies to the name tags of other players on the field.

Rappelling into the battlefield
Fire Team buddy taking point

Here, we get another look at some of the Fire Team Buddy mechanics at work. You’ll notice this player’s buddy is highlighted on the screen so that keeping track of his whereabouts comes easy. Interestingly, you can also see that some of the HUD elements seem to fade when the player is running or not shooting.

About to set up shop

This player is utilizing one of his class-specific abilities to set up a stationary machine-gun in order to provide suppressive fire for his teammates. This machine-gun in particular carries the ability to fire 40mm grenades as well as.

Suppressive fire!
Earning some support actions

Above, we get a good look at some of the support actions that are available and how you can achieve them. This player obviously got his points by scoring some sweet skills and earned the choice between an attack chopper and a scout aircraft. These choices will transition to the top-left of the HUD shortly after the player is informed of his achievement.

Buddy Kill and Buddy Nemesis Kill

Two interesting bonus points earned here are the Buddy Kill and Buddy Nemesis Kill. This most likely has to do with earning assist points in conjunction with your Fire Team Buddy.

Taking on a remote-contro,l turret-mounted bot

This is the first time, we see a player go head-to-head with a remote turret-mounted bot, available as a support action. Unfortunately, the situation doesn’t end up so well for him. Below, we get a quick look at the death screen.

Losing to a remote-control, turret-mounted EOD bot
Respawn timer

The respawn timer above most likely applies to your Fire Team Buddy. You can notice it here as this player begins to call in a predator missile attack. Below, you can see it from a first-person view as it quickly approaches the battlefield.

Predator missile attack
A view to a multi-kill

Catching the view from this soldier as he witnesses the effect of the predator missile attack, you’ll also notice that his bullet counter indicates an infinite supply of bullets for his handgun.

Earning some support actions with a pump-action shotgun
Incoming airstrikes
Deploying bipod in an advantageous position

Much like in Battlefield 3, players will be able to deploy their weapon with a bipod if it is attached. This player is setting up on higher ground with his bipod-equipped light machine gun.

Tossing nade

Here, we get a good look at the grenade throwing animation, but what you’ll notice in the image below, is that this soldier is, in fact, throwing three grenades. You can clearly see the three distinct indicators up at the top right in the image below.

Three of ’em

It was made clear that Medal of Honor: Warfighter would feature micro-destruction. It’s not sure, however, what type effect it will have on the gameplay and if this scene below is in-game, or part of a cut scene. Chances are, we’ll be seeing more end-of-match cutscenes as we did in Medal of Honor 2010.

DayZ To Become A Standalone Game This Year With A “Minecraft-Like Model” In Mind

During the PC Gaming Expo Rezzed, Dean Hall, project lead of DayZ, spoke about a standalone version of the DayZ mod releasing later this year. Dean wishes to “have something out by September.”

For the DayZ standalone game, Dean plans on using the “Minecraft Model,” meaning that the game will be released unfinished, in the alpha stage, and updates will follow. This may be confusing for some, as to why anyone would want to purchase an incomplete product, however it has worked tremendously in the past for Minecraft, and it should also be known that DayZ is after all, still a mod.

“Kind of like Minecraft, the full release isn’t necessarily the goal, the development itself that’s the goal, and see where the idea goes, even if it reaches a full release or even if it does, I think we would probably want to expand on it,” Dean told Digital Spy.

The pricing of the standalone will be based on the new content added. We all know that DayZ is a free Arma 2 mod, which will bring challenges to get people to buy it. The goal is to pack enough content to make buyers “happy”, Dean said “it needs to be community supported and they need to be behind it.”

“So the challenge there is to come up with enough features and content that people are happy to pay out €10, €15 for an additional product when they’ve already spent €20 on Arma II,” Dean explained.

Of course going free-to-play is always a choice, however Dean feels that doing so would “destroy the experiment,” which we assume is the Minecraft model.

Read more about the latest DayZ Mod patch details here.

Mass Effect 3 Operation: Broadside Starts This Weekend

The latest mission for Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer operatives will commence this weekend. Operation Broadside starts at 10am PST Friday July 13th, and ends at 10am PST Sunday July 15th.

The ultimate goal “is to develop a sustainable fighting method with a minimal loss of life,” and this is done “by coordinating large-scale attacks against the Reapers on multiple fronts,” the official BioWare Blog explains. Keep in mind that objectives will “vary from planet to planet and theater to theater.”

Here are the defined goals:

  • Squad Goal: Extract at least one squad member against Reapers on Gold difficulty
  • Allied Goal: Extract 400,000 squads against Reapers on ANY difficulty
  • Special Circumstance: None
  • Squad Goal Success: All squad members awarded a Commendation Pack
  • Allied Goal Success: All players awarded a Victory Pack. Medi-gel cap increases from 5 units to 6.

What do you guys about these ? Should more multiplayer games adopt this style of community events?

Earlier today, a new free MP DLC pack was outed, you can learn more about ‘Earth’ through here.

Brand New Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Campaign Villain Trailer

Activision finally reveals the much-talked about antagonist in the newest Call of Duty: Black Ops II trailer.

“Raul Menendez is idolized as the Messiah of the 99%, yet underneath the surface lurks an insidious mastermind hell bent on global insurrection,” reads the official description. What’s interesting about this villain compared to baddies in other games is that his character was created in collaboration with David S.
