Also, PS3 Premium users now are able to download Close Quarters. The second expansion pack weighs in at 1142MB on PS3.

Schedule on when Close Quarters is expected to be playable as we reported earlier (still verifying the dates, not final):

Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Update 3 Now Live, Close Quarters Maps Revealed, and More

DICE has released another patch for Battlefield 3. The patch packs in a slew of fixes and balance tweaks. You can find the complete list of patch notes through here.

The new patch is currently not available on all platforms (only PS3 and Xbox 360), and is not live in all countries. Not all users are being prompted to download the patch upon booting the game. If this is the case for you as it was for me, another way to download the patch is through the in-game store menu option.

The update is mandatory in order for Battlefield 3 Premium to take effect, if you choose to purchase it. As for those who don’t wish to buy Premium, DICE notes “If you’re unable to access multiplayer, you must download this patch.”

The patch will set you back 2.38GB on Xbox 360, 1.4GB on PS3 (patch 1.05). PC patch hasn’t gone live at the time of writing.

The patch also reveals all four Close Quarters maps, which can find below, courtesy of Redditor striker035. In addition to already unveiled Ziba Tower and Donya Fortress, Close Quarters includes Operation 925 and Scrapmetal.

Thanks to all MP1st readers on Twitter for the help, and be sure to stay tuned to MP1st for more Premium info coming up shortly.

Battlefield 3 Premium Trailer and DLC Analysis, Everything You Need to Know

The newest Battlefield 3 Premium trailer was packed with information and screens of upcoming Battlefield 3 DLC including maps, weapons, vehicles, and customization options. We also find further clues to what Aftermath and End Game are all about.

If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out the incredible Battlefield 3 Premium trailer right here.

Expansion Packs:

Now, lets take a look at the expansion packs that will be included in Battlefield 3 Premium. Most interesting are the captions for the two mysterious expansion packs Aftermath and End Game. It seems that Aftermath could very well be focused on a round-based survival game mode. The question is, what exactly is it that is threatening our survival? End Game doesn’t give us too much to go by, other than the fact that players can expect “lethal high-speed action.” Could this mean more vehicle-based action? Check out these screens below.

Update: Readers have pointed out that the vehicle on the End Game cover is, in fact, a motor-bike. It’s also quite possible that the two soldiers are sitting on one the motor-bike, suggesting some sort of team-oriented, driver/gunner gameplay.

The previously released Back to Karkand expansion pack
The upcoming Close Quarters expansion pack
More Armored Kill screens below
Dawning what was previously End Game's cover, Aftermath will have players fighting for survival. The question is, Zombies or Dinosaurs? The rips on the bottom right-hand side of the poster suggest some sort of claw attack.
What could DICE mean by "lethal high-speed action?" One (or both) of these soldiers is (are) riding a motor-bike which could suggest some sort of road-rage warfare.

Armored Kill:

This is our first look at the Armored Kill expansion pack. Below are some images of some of the locations and vehicles you’ll be fighting in.

More tank battles
Driving down the highway on a quad
More jet-fighting action
A view of the battlefield

New Weapons:

Of course, Battlefield 3 Premium promises over 20 new weapons to play with which will be spread throughout the different expansion packs. You can catch quite a few new ones in these images below. Let us know what you find!

New Vehicles:

New vehicles will also be introduced through upcoming Battlefield 3 DLC including tanks, trucks, AA vehicles, quads and… a plane? Perhaps DICE was being serious when they said “the biggest map in Battlefield history.” There have got to be some pretty huge maps in order for players to be able to fly a plane in them. Could this mean the ability to sky dive into battles from above? Something I hoped for earlier in my wish list titled, Why Are These Features Not In Battlefield 3? A Bad Company 2 Comparison. Check out some of these new vehicles in the images below.

Update: Readers have pointed out that the “plane” looks like an AC-130 Spectre Gunship.

Customization:

These images below detail some of the new dog tags as well as weapon and soldier skins that come packed with Battlefield 3 Premium.

More class-specific dog tags
Fancy a Battlefield Premium dog tag?
Dog tags for the Jack of all trades

New Game Modes:

Brand new game modes will also be making their way into Battlefield 3 on top of the previously revealed Conquest Domination. Gun Master was hinted at earlier in the leaked Close Quarters Xbox 360 achievement list, though little is known exactly how it will play out. Tank Superiority is obviously the ground-based, tank version of Battlefield: 1943’s Air Superiority. Players will most likely be battling it out for control over key areas while in the comfort of a heavily armored tank. Expect an announcement of one or two new game modes in the future.

More ways to play Battlefield 3

New Knife:

As promised in the Battlefield Premium fact sheet, premium members will have acces to the new ACB-90 knife shown in these images below. Just don’t poke any eyes out.

"I'm gonna getchya!"
"Tickle, tickle, tickle!"

Treyarch on Black Ops I: “We Felt Like We Could Push It So Much More,” Treyarch Promises More PC Support

Treyarch Studio Head Mark Lamia wants Black Ops fans to know that the team behind Black Ops II has much more to offer this time around, feeling that the Original Black Ops was just “base-level.” He also touches on the PC versions of Black Ops II, ensuring that it will be well supported and will run on a variety of PCs.

“Gosh, I guess it’s been over a year and a half now,” referring to the original Black Ops as Lamia speaks to Aus Gamers. He elaborates, “as we were wrapping up Black Ops I, the team was really firing on all cylinders.” He adds, “the multiplayer team was excited about what we’d created; the zombies team was excited about what we’d created.” He admits, however, “we were really proud of what we’d created, but we felt like that was kind of like the base-level. We felt like we could push it so much more. So that’s why you’re seeing so many new things go into Black Ops II.” So far, Black Ops II is already promising to deliver much more with enhancements to the graphics enginea bigger and better Zombies mode, and multiplayer that’s being built from the ground up.

PC players can also look forward to improvements and a much higher level of support with Black Ops II, promises Treyarch. “We have a PC team that’s dedicated to the PC version of the game,” explains Lamia. He added, “we are optimising our engine for DX11. There’s a more efficient system we’re working on, a proprietary anti-cheat mechanism for the PC specifically.”

Backing up Lamia’s statement, Treyarch’s director of technology Cesar Stastny recently said on Twitter that the “pc version is developed by a dedicated pc team simultaneously with the other platforms.” He also touched on their anti-cheat measures, stating, “every popular PC title is hacked upon release. We are improving our ability to detect and ban based on lessons learned on Black Ops,” which should come as a good sign to many PC players.

Lamia went on to explain that Black Ops II will cater to a variety of different rigs, both high-end and low end. “We’re doing all kinds of advancements on the graphics engine that is going to, I think, yield great results if you’ve invested in a new rig,” he remarked. However, he adds, “I think the flip side of that is, if you have a rig that’s been around for a couple of years, that’s fine too. Because we’re actually trying to make it play really great on a wide variety of systems.”

Do you think Treyarch has what it takes to deliver one of the most promising Call of Duty titles yet? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments!

Dead Space 3 Removing Competitive Multiplayer, Adding Co-op

Details from the next issue of Gameinformer have been leaked  by a user over at NeoGaf.

The leaked information confirmed that Visceral Games would be dropping the competitive multiplayer that was introduced in Dead Space 2. As to the reason why, this has not been revealed yet. However, many have speculated that the aim is to focus more on the story and that the multiplayer of Dead Space 2 was more of a tacked on feature to the series anyways. Though the competitive mode has now been taken out of the game, it has also been confirmed that they will be introducing co-op to the series. No word on whether this is just local or online co-op.

Below are just some of the highlights of the Gameinformer details.

  • Co-op confirmed
  • No competitive multiplayer in DS3
  • Now has universal ammo pickups
  • Cover system added
  • Co-op will have different cut-scenes and interactions between Isaac and Carver.
  • Zero space gravity section and dark corridors will be present as they were in previous Dead Space titles.
  • Fodders & Feeders are a new type of necromorphs.
  • Visceral games calls these new necromorphs “The snow beast”.
  • Nexus Feeders is a 30 story tall centipede necromorph. This is “what happens when a human isn’t actually infected by a Swarm or by a Divider heads”
  • Icy Planet is called Tau Volantis,
  • Fodder transform into two different necromorphs depending on how you kill them
  • Ammo drops are more plentiful
  • They want DS3 to be less linear than 2&1;be able to explore large environments and find “unique beta missions” that aren’t required to complete the main game
  • You can slap different guns together like a Plasma cutter/Ripper combo,Visceral didn’t say “how exactly these weapon mods work” but GI noticed enemies drop Scrap metal and ‘tungsten’ now.

How do you guys feel about Visceral Games getting rid of the competitive multiplayer portion of the game? Was Dead Space 2 multiplayer lack luster? Leave a comment below or visit our forum post and be sure to keep an eye on our E3 coverage where we will surely find out more about Dead Space 3.

The Integrity of the Halo Franchise: A Cause for Concern?

343i replacing the autonomy of a world renowned developer like Bungie is a huge undertaking. Implementing their changes to expand upon a beloved Halo universe is a monstrous one. From what small footage I’ve had a chance to see of Halo 4, many would unanimously agree that it is probably the prettiest and most glamorous looking title ever to hit the franchise. Looks, however, can be deceiving.  Forums, critics, and especially diehard Halo fans are concerned about the upcoming changes to the multiplayer, particularly revolving around the gameplay, specializations/perks, loadouts, and spawn times that too closely resemble elements used by Call of Duty and Battlefield. These changes, at this point, are difficult to fathom and have me worried about the integrity of what made Halo both distinctive and phenomenal.

Halo, from day one, has always been a competitive title popular with big leagues such as MLG. However, Halo 4 aims to ditch default weapon sets in favor of weapon loadouts that allow the players to customize weapons and equipment. This has me concerned primarily because it may undermine the even playing field that made default weapon sets work. Balance that has come to characterize Halo games is also left in question. Another new feature is 343i’s attempt to combine singleplayer narrative with the multiplayer. Some, such as myself, argue that the emphasis of a narrative driven multiplayer, like Max Payne 3, can undermine or overlook the competitive aspect of the game turning it into a mainstream shooter rather than skill-based.

Patience, timing and strategy have also been the name of the game of previous Halo installments. But from footage released in what many consider to be deliberate viral marketing campaign, Halo 4 is seemingly faster paced, perhaps to accommodate mainstream players who are loyal to common shooters that we are all aware of. An article on attackofthefanboy also makes a good point that adding specializations and weapon loadouts to the Halo formula, “breaks core aspects in an attempt to transition Halo into a position of mainstream accord.” Creative director Josh Holmes mentioned in an interview that Halo 4 includes elements that are familiar yet are adding mechanics that make the experience “distinct.” If this “distinction” is synonymous with adding features already utilized by CoD and Battlefield, I am reasonably concerned that Halo 4 will morph into something that will alienate faithful fans.

Currently, I believe there are too many so called “changes” to Halo 4’s multiplayer that break the core of what made the franchise unique and popular amongst its fan base. However at this point, its difficult to provide a solid consensus as to how much the game has changed and what has been left intact up until E3. I’m crossing my fingers that Bungie has left the game in good hands.

Xbox 360 June Patch, PS3 Patch 1.15 Will Enhance MW3’s System Link

The competitive Call of Duty community has been asking the team behind Modern Warfare 3 for proper LAN support since launch. Thankfully, it looks like Infinity Ward will soon flesh out System Link with “Competition Mode.”

Infinity Ward announced, via Facebook, “Competition mode is coming to System Link in the next Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 title update!”

The next update on consoles will include the following:

  • Ability to unlock all weapons/attachments
  • A greater customization of game modes

Competition mode will go live on PS3 on 6/14 with patch 1.15 (read the rest of patch notes here) and Xbox 360 in the June update, presumably patch 1.16.

Ex-Infinity Ward employee Robert Bowling did mention a few month ago that enhancing System Link was on the team’s to-do list, but it was further down the list.

Battlefield 3 Premium Pops Up On PSN Store, Not For Sale Yet

Earlier today, Battlefield 3 Premium banners have turned up on PSN stores in some territories, confirming the logo of the recently leaked fact sheet.

It seems that the rumored Battlefield 3 Premium fact sheet might be real, as MP1st readers SchwartzJesuz and H’m have posted images of Battlefield 3 Premium PSN banners on our forums. The Battlefield 3 Premium logo displayed in the PSN banner is identical to the fact sheet’s, in a way adding to its’ legitimacy.

The Premium banner was seen on the Danish PSN Store (399 Danish Kroner) and the Australian Store ($79.95 AUD). Also, British readers are reporting a £39.99 price tag shown on the British PSN store. The leaked fact sheet listed Premium to cost $49.99 USD/4000 Microsoft Points.

Battlefield 3 Premium is not on sale at the moment, users receive the following message when it is selected, “This content is not available on your current account.”

We expect EA to reveal Battlefield 3 Premium at its E3 2012 presser on Monday, June 4th. You can find more info on where you can watch the livestream through here.

Robert Bowling Working On Human Element, Zombie Survival Game Due in 2015 for Next-Gen

Former Call of Duty creative strategist, Robert Bowling, has announced that his newly formed studio, Robotoki, is working on Human Element, a zombie apocalypse survival game.

“Their greatest strength is the fear that [zombies] instill in us, the survivors, that unreasonable fear. Unreasonable fear that leads us to do unreasonable things to survive,” Robert Bowling, the president of Robotoki, told Game Informer.

Human Element will include a character creation system giving players the option to choose between three classes, Action, Intelligence, and Stealth, and three different identities, Survive Alone, Survive with a Partner, and Survive with a Young Child.

Bowling continued, “How you choose to start in the world will determine how you can engage and impacts the scenarios you will be presented with on a physical and morality level.”

Human Element is slated to launch in 2015 on next-gen consoles, PC, mobile, and tablets.

Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Xbox 360 Achievements Hint At New Game Mode

A list of Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Xbox 360 achievements have been outed hinting at a new Battlefield 3 game mode called “Gun Master.” Close Quarters is just around the corner and is said to release along side Battlefield Premium June 4th.

PS3 Trophies have yet been revealed but it’s safe to assume that the titles and descriptions would match the 360 achievements. Check out the list below courtesy of X360A.org.

Dominator: Win a round in Conquest Domination – 20G

Deadly Tools: Without dying, get a kill with a Carbine, Pistol and Rocket Launcher – 30G

Show of Force: Get 10 kills with all ten CQ weapons – 30G

Man of Calibre: Complete a round of Gun Master – 20G

Secret Achievement – 20G

The second to last one, Man of Calibre, is particularly interesting as it suggests, perhaps, a new of game mode on top of the previously announced Conquest Domination.

DICE will be performing maintenance on the Battlelog June 4th, most likely in preparation for Close Quarters.

What do you think “Gun Master” could be? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below!
