Upcoming Battlefield 3 Maintenance – More on Punkbuster Issues

On January 31st, tomorrow, connectivity on all platforms (PC, Xbox 360 and PS3) will be halted as DICE performs maintenance on the Battlelog.

By the time servers are back up, it was stated that the “Battlelog will be updated.” More info should be on its way tomorrow. The down times are as follows:

12:00 AM PST – 3:00 AM PST
03:00 AM EST – 06:00 AM EST
08:00 GMT – 11:00 GMT
09:00 CET – 12:00 CET

In DICE’s on-going attempt to solve the issues PC players are experiencing with Punkbuster, Community Manager, Daniel “zh1nt0” Matros, recently posted an update on the Battlelog about “kick and disconnect issues.” It’s a big read, but hopefully it will be able to help some of the issues PC Battlefield 3 players are experiencing.

DICE Resolves Battlefield 3 Battlelog Bans – Sort Of

Recently, DICE posted an updated on the Battlelog stating that the issues PC players are experiencing with Punkbuster and other 3rd party services have been resolved, at least for the most part.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the recent hacking attempts, read here for the break down and other recent updates.

DICE’s update on the Battlelog read as follows:

Together with the 3rd party service providers we have taken steps to remove the faulty bans, and improve the protection against future fake bans.

We have determined that the root cause resulting in the server bans is not directly related to Battlefield 3, but rather related to select 3rd party services which server owners can use in conjunction with PunkBuster to protect their servers. If you are able to log in to Battlelog, your account has not been banned by EA or DICE so there is no need to contact Customer Support. This issue did not affect Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 players of Battlefield 3.

UPDATE: As seen in the comments, we are receiving reports that this issue is still affecting some players. We are continuing to investigate what may be causing this issue with some servers.

If you are still experiencing problems please try joining other PunkBuster enabled servers – only a subset of servers are affected.

Hopefully those still experiencing issues will see them resolved quickly.

Starhawk – Changes to Knifing System, New Map Coming to Beta, and Custom Controls

President of Lightbox Interactive, Dylan Jobe discusses big changes coming to the knifing system and other materials that will be covered in a very big update.

Many players in the Starhawk beta have been reporting that the current knifing system feels a bit awkward and at times stiff. Some would even say it’s broken considering how it’s a downgrade from the previous system found in Warhawk. In a recent tweet, Dylan states that the whole knifing system will be seeing an overhaul in the near future.

During the Live Starhawk Radio show, Dylan stated that he feels unhappy with it, and that they probably shouldn’t have even included this system in the Beta. Currently, the studio is working on a new system that will feel much more fluid then the current system. Also, one of the biggest changes is that drama kills will be added to the knifing system. It will be very similar to Halo Reach’s knife kills, where players will do a small animation after they have successfully executed one of these kills. The whole mechanics of the knifing system has been redone and will be included in an upcoming big patch.  Currently, there is no date on when this patch will be available.

Also coming in the patch is a new and final map for the Beta  along with new Hawk weapons.  The new map will be much larger then the other two maps, and will show off just some of the many color spectrums in Starhawk. Along with a few new features and maps, players can expect some changes to the auto aim system. Lightbox Interactive’s goal is to make it in the “between” spot, meaning that they want it to assist the player enough, yet not enough to exploit it where they can just snap to every player and get instant kills.

Some beta testers have been asking for full button customization. Sadly, this may not make it in the final game as the team is heavily focused on other issues. Dylan stressed that this was something that is very challenging to do and a lot of work needs to be put into it. If it doesn’t make it into the final game, then it’s very likely to be included in a free update after launch. Speaking of controls, Lightbox is going to patch Turbo Controllers abuse. If you’re not familiar with these controllers, they allow players to assign actions to certain buttons and the response time will be significantly increased. For example, a pistol that would normally shoot a whole clip at say 10-20 seconds, the turbo controller makes it possible to shoot this whole clip in just under a few seconds. The solution is by adjusting the accuracy so that it will decreased as soon as another load is shot from the weapon in Starhawk, making it difficult to aim.

Pacing will continue to be adjusted throughout the beta. In later updates, more weapon pickups will be placed; this was decided based on whether or not players should have to waste resources just to get a certain weapon. Further, Naked Bases are being looked into to increase start-up speeds. At the moment, bases are completely naked and players are tasked to build structures. The reason why many have been complaining about this is because at times some teams decide to build all out and attack, while the other team has nothing to defend themselves because everyone is busy building non defensive structures. Later on they will test out maps with pre-made structures to see how it goes.

Battlefield 3 DLC Rumor – All American Map Pack

Today, we have a very interesting rumor coming from YouTuber, TheAustrianToast, regarding DICE’s plans for future Battlefield 3 DLC.

In a dual commentary with DCRUColin, TheAustrianToast revealed, “I have a source telling me that there will be an all American DLC.” He added that these maps would be based on locations like “New York City, Miami, New Jearsey, and I think it was San Francisco.”

Before Battlefield fans get a little too excited, since his sources were never revealed, we have to consider this a fairly wild but rather likely rumor. Rather likely, because if we take a look at the recent Back to Karkand maps, they are already based on various cities in the Middle East. This also seems to be the overall theme with Battlefield 3 – environments within city limits, as opposed to Battlefield: Bad Comany 2’s more open environments. It would make sense for DICE to stick with what the Frostbite 2 engine seems to do really well.

TheAustrianToast later stated in this commentary, “I mean, the all American DLC pack is a great idea and should actually come out middle, or in the beginning of summer.

Lastly, a while back, DICE mentioned that they weren’t into making “map packs,” but rather “expansions.” This would most likely mean that we would also see a new set of weapons, vehicles, and assignments much like the recent Back to Karkand expansion. On top of Battlefield 2143 rumors, DICE also considered the idea of a snow-themed expansion, something many Battlefield 3 fans have been craving since Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Make sure to follow MP1st on Twitter and Facebook for more Battlefield 3 news!

Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Does this rumor seem likely to you? Would you love to drive a tank down the streets of New York City in an all American themed DLC?

5 Co-op Games That Need HD Remakes

This generation of online gaming has offered up a bevy of cooperative thrills, whether it be Gears of War’s methodical, gore-soaked killfests, Portal 2’s heady puzzle-solving, or even Castle Crasher’s budget brawling. That being said, there are a number of cooperative gems that ruled last generation’s roost that would do wonders in regards to rounding out the current generation’s co-op selection.

Definitely one of this generation's finest cooperative games.
Champions of Norrath

The two Champions of Norrath games for the PS2 are still the best console adaptations of the popular PC-based Diablo-style lootfests. Varied environments, distinctive classes, and a tremendous amount of randomized loot kept gamers glued to their screens for days on end. The fun was amplified significantly with a friend, two, or three. The familiar realms of EverQuest helped draw in a number of established PC gamers, but the controls and aesthetics fit the PS2’s capabilities wonderfully. An HD remake would be a fantastic addition to this generation’s best cooperative action-RPG games (Sacred 2, Fable 2/3, Dungeon Hunter: Alliance, Too Human, etc).

Halo 2

Last Fall’s HD remake of Halo: Combat Evolved was shockingly good. A familiar and yet relevant campaign was souped up with some snazzy graphics, added collectible terminals and skulls, a beefed-up score, and topped off with smooth online co-op play. Halo 2, despite the cliffhanger ending, featured one of the best campaigns in the series, and would undoubtedly be a popular seller if rereleased in HD, with all the added bonuses, goodies, and online workings as the original had. 2014 will mark the ten-year anniversary of Halo 2. If the current rumors prove to be true, we’ll be about a year deep into the next generation of Microsoft consoles. The title would make an excellent addition to the Xbox library and would please co-op gamers to no end.

Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes

D&D: Heroes was yet another Diablo clone, featuring familiar hack-and-slash gameplay peppered with epic skills, classes, and enticing loot. It was one of the only (if not the only) games to rival Playstation’s Champions of Norrath series, and held its own against ARPG standard Baldur’s Gate. The familiar D&D aesthetics, races, locations, and lore helped bring a dedicated fan base and newcomers alike to a recognizable yet original experience on the Xbox. Featuring enjoyable 4-player cooperative play, the game would be a surefire hit on the 360 in HD, and would help many jaded fantasy fans forget about the middling D&D: Daggerdale.

Doom 3

It’s hard to make a push for a Doom 3 HD rerelease (it’s playable on the 360), but it would probably sell well; the game is id Software’s highest-grossing title, and would help bring attention to its impending sequel, Doom 4 (a game id will want to sell well considering the poor reception garnered by Rage last Fall). The game’s co-op was an absolute blast – featuring the frantic gunplay of Dead Space, with thrills and scares surpassing EA’s survival horror franchise as well as Resident Evil 5, Doom 3’s stripped-down first-person buzz is still as playable and relevant as ever…but wouldn’t it be better in 1080p with achievements?

Super Smash Brothers Melee

This one’s obviously a long shot, considering Brawl is still one of the most popular Wii games, and an apparent sequel will be heading to the Wii U and 3DS in a matter of months. However, Melee is arguably the most balanced of the series so far, and has some of the best fighting-game level design ever to grace a console. The game could be a hit with online play; devoid of the balance-crushing Smash Ball, bizarre level design, and sketchy character balancing from Brawl, Melee could offer a relaxing respite. Want to get back to printing money, Nintendo? Rerelease this for the Wii U as a two-pack with Mario Kart: Double Dash, and get back in the black.

Make known your HD co-op remake wishes in the comments!

New Twisted Metal Demo Details, Available for a ‘Limited Window’

Earlier this week it was revealed that the Twisted Metal Demo would hit PSN on the 31st of January. David Jaffe has now come out to discuss the content of the demo and what players can expect.

David Jaffe, via Twitter, stated that he wanted the demo to be online for a certain amount of time. He stated that he thinks it will only stay up until the game launches. David explained “I pushed to only make demo available [for a] limited window. Don’t think it will stay up till launch BUT I’m not 100% sure.” Jaffe went on to say that he’s a “big fan of giving big enough tastes for consumer to make a smart, educated decision about purchase they feel good about. But too much content runs risk of hurting sales as people think they’ve already ‘gotten the taste’.”

Starhawk Skill and Ranking System Detailed

President of Lightbox Interactive, Dylan Jobe, speaks out on the current skill and ranking system for Starhawk.

The Skill System:

The Skill System is not a tree system that many players are familiar with. Instead, it will be a flat system. This means that players will be able to purchase almost any skills right away. All skills have the exact same point values and can be purchased by using 3 skill points. Skill points are earned by leveling up. So, one level equals one point. The reason why they went with this route was to increase the game’s life and play time for players.

However, there are certain skills that do require a prerequisite. In theory, this is meant to help players discover what kind of role they want to be playing in Starhawk. For example, the Engineer Skill allows you to spawn with a repair tool. The prerequisite to unlock this skill is to repair any ten ally structures.

Here are two more skills, although the chances of them making it in the final game is unlikely:

  • Toughness: This skill adds more health to the player. The reason why this won’t be in the final game is due to the fact that players may become to attached to this skills. The team decided that they didn’t want any of the skills in the game to be necessary to always have in every match. They don’t want the game to play out like Uncharted 3 or Call of Duty where everyone is using the exact same perks. Also players would become conditioned to a weapon in the game. They would figure out exactly how much damage a weapon does. This skill makes the game feel “muddy”, since it would knock players off.
  • Squad leader Skill: Though there are currently no plans to have Mobile Spawn Points, one of the skills that is currently in Prototype is the Squad Leader Skill. Anyone who has this skill equipped will be able to have squad mates spawn on that person’s location. It was something that the developers thought was fun, but they found that it could potentially wreck the game. It’s not known whether we will see this skill in the final game. However, if the game was based on a tree system then it would definitely be one of the last unlocks in the game.

During the beta, the skill system will be continuously monitored for community feedback, according to StarHawk radio, available through iTunes.

Ranking System:

Rather then having your normal military ranking system, Starhawk will be using the classic numeric rankings. This is because the military ranking doesn’t really apply to the two factions (Rifters and Outcasts). They did consider the idea of having ranks that do fit with each faction, but that would leave them with two different sets of ranks, which isn’t something they want to do.

There will be a title system though it’s not linked to your current ranking. These will be based on your team/clan, meaning that Clan Leaders will be able to hand out specific titles to other members of the group.

Battlefield 3 – Incoming Vehicle Tweaks, DICE Ramps Up Anti Cheat Measures

DICE’s Community Manager, Daniel Matros, has more news for those worried about, or affected by, the recent hacking attempts on Battlefield 3 players while Senior Designer, Fredrik Thylander, updates Battlefield 3 fans about incoming vehicle tweaks.

Daniel Matros recently mention to Battlefield fans that a brand new version of Punkbuster was released today and may help alleviate some problems. “Please update to this one as it might solve issues occurring for many users. Arigato!” If you’ve been in the dark recently, a group of hackers began banning innocent PC Battlefield players to protest DICE’s use of Punkbuster. For more details, read here.

Also of note is that DICE has recently posted a job opening for an Anti Cheat Administrator, most likely in an effort to ramp up protection against these types of attacks. “The administrator will compose an absolutely vital function to secure the online experience our games represent by actively be a part of the community and keep up to date with the current cheat exposure.” Their job is also to “Monitor and keep up to date with the cheating community online.”

Fans have recently been asking Senior Gameplay Designer, Fredrik Thylander to tweak vehicle scoring in Battlefield 3. In response, Thylander stated that the current “plan is to have driver assist at 50 next patch.” When asked if there was any chance of adjusting AMTRAC points, Thylander responded, “ill try. Can’t detect on spawn that it’s an amtrac but driver assist is going way up, which should help.” To add to this, he also mentioned that “pilot assists are going up as well.”

Do you think these changes will help promote vehicular teamwork even further? Also, how do you feel DICE is handling the Punkbuster/fake-banning situation? Let us know in the comments below!

Treyarch Working on Next-Gen Call of Duty? – Sledgehammer Looking for ‘Mod Community Experience’

A new job listing suggests that Treyarch has next-gen tools, and is looking for potential employees with next-gen experience. Sledgehammer, on the other hand, is looking for mod community experience.

As you might have heard, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have been staffing up lately. In recent job listings for both studios, phrases, such as ‘next-generation technologies’, were mentioned several times. Treyarch’s new job listing on Gamasutra is no different; it refers to the studio’s next-generation capabilities and candidates’ experience with next-gen consoles. It’s worth noting that last year GameSpot reported that Treyarch was working on a ‘new console’, which was speculated to be the Wii U.

The listing reads, “Come join the team responsible for the award winning games Call of Duty: World at War, Nazi Zombies, and most recently, Call of Duty: Black Ops!  Treyarch is focused on delivering high quality, fun and leading edge games for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Windows PC platform. Our extensive infrastructure, investment in next-generation tools and technology and strong leadership provides a solid foundation to continue pioneering great new titles for years to come.” Also mentioned in the listing, “the ideal candidate will be able to show good examples of lighting made for games, preferably next-generation console.”

If history is any indication, 2012’s Call of Duty will be developed by Treyarch. It is rumored that Call of Duty 9 will be subtitled ‘Black Ops 2’, and will include fan favorite co-op mode, Zombies. If new consoles from Sony and Microsoft were to be released this year or early next year, Call of Duty 9 could possibly be ported over to the new consoles.

On another note, Sledgehammer has posted an new job listing looking for a multiplayer level designer, which fuels the rumor that Sledgehammer might break off co-developing titles with Infinity Ward, and develops its own sub-franchise of, you know what, Call of Duty. The position outlines that Sledgehammer is “actively recruiting top talent for [their] Call of Duty development team.” This means that the chances of the studio moving on to develop a new IP anytime soon are slim. One point that stood out to me is that it’s ‘recommended’ for applications to have “mod community experience”. As you might know, many multiplayer games have been greatly influenced by mods. Read more about the Zombies mod in Call in Duty 4 and other mods the shaped the FPS games you play today.

What would you like to see in a next-gen Call of Duty?

MW3 ELITE Content Drops Intended For Multiple Xbox Profiles – Fix Incoming

Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, recently spoke about the availability of ELITE DLC Content Drops being exclusive to the Gamertag that is associated with the ELITE Premium service on the Xbox 360.

Many Modern Warfare 3 Xbox 360 fans have been up-in-arms that the recently released content drops on the Xbox 360 are available to only one profile even though the content is installed to the Xbox 360 hard drive. Activision Customer Support originally stated yesterday that “the ELITE content is only accessible to gamertags associated with ELITE. This is intended,” in response to upset fans. Though, it was later added that the statement meant to read:  “…are allowed to access it.” The representative added, “I couldnt say if it will be accessible to other tags once launched to public, but currently only premium members.”

Today, Bowling clarified on the official Call of Duty Forums:

We understand that ELITE Premium Members on Xbox Live who purchased the latest DLC Content Drop for Modern Warfare 3 are unable to access that content while signed into other profiles on the same console that originally downloaded the content. This is unintentional and we will work to get an update out as soon as possible that corrects this issue and allows you to continue to enjoy the new maps.

As Gameranx reported earlier, the original statement was also not in accordance with the Xbox 360’s terms of use, making Bowling’s statement all the more reasonable. This will most likely apply to PlayStation 3 ELITE Premium members as well.

Battlefield 3 – MAV Exploit to To Be Patched, Missing B2K Vehicles

Battlefield 3’s Gameplay Designers, Gustav Halling and Alan Kertz talk MAV exploits and the differences between BF2 versions of the Back to Karkand Maps and their BF3 counter-parts.

Gustav Halling was recently asked if the rather goofy MAV exploit has been patched yet. For those who don’t know, the MAV exploit, which has given rise to hilarious videos like this, allows players to ride on top of it to lift themselves to generally unreachable areas of any given map. Halling responded, “not yet, will be fixed in next [patch],” confirming that it will, indeed, be patched. Hopefully, this fix will be included in the long awaited February patch. No more free rides for you recon players, it seems.

Recently, Alan Kertz spoke of some of the differences of the Battlefield 2 versions of the Back to Karkand maps and their Battlefield 3 remakes. He was asked why some vehicles did not appear on these new maps as they did in Battlefield 2. For example, Gulf of Oman is missing Transport Helicopters on the Russian side, while there is also a missing Humvee on Strike at Karkand and Sharqi Peninsula. Kertz explained, “we made some tweaks to update the maps for BF3, some of the original designs don’t directly translate,” meaning certain decisions had to be made in regards to the similarity of vehicle layouts.

Speaking of Battlefield 2, check out this awesome remake of BF2’s intro in BF3’s Frostbite 2 engine.

We’d like to hear from you. Do you feel the generally harmless MAV exploit should be patched? Battlefield 2 vets, do you prefer the newer versions of these Back to Karkand maps, or do you miss the classic layouts? Let us know in the comments below!

Starhawk Beta Patch 1.2.3 Notes, Party and Invite System, and Future Updates

Starhawk Beta has officially been updated. In this update you’ll find many new changes that have been made to Hawks and Jetpacks.  Also, Dylan Jobe speaks out on the party and invite system for Starhawk along with what might be coming in future updates.
Many Starhawk Beta testers have been wondering for the past few weeks whether Starhawk would support invites and have a party system. Dylan has now come out and stated that there will be a party system, he also added, “we’ll be activating that feature during our Public Beta.”
Future updates:
In a video response done by one of the Beta Tester,
A video produced by one of the beta testers outlined some of the issues with Starhawk. He stressed about how slow the pace of the game is.  Each game, players start out with a small amount of resources. Some fixes that were suggested that there could be pre-made structures when the game starts so that players don’t need to waste any resources. Along with this, the user states that the game needs more pickups, and even eliminating the need to waste resources on a sniper tower just to get a sniper Rifle.  Dylan commented on this stating that the future updates are going to make him happy.
Official notes from Lightbox Interactive, head on over to their blog for a more thorough explanation:
  • Greatly increased Hawk maneuverability while afterburners are engaged in all 3 flight modes.
  • Greatly decreased JetPack max fuel capacity (from 10 seconds to 5 seconds).
  • Greatly increased JetPack fuel recharge time (from 2 seconds to 6 seconds).
  • New JetPack OTS camera position.
  • Reduced Jetpack’s aim assist response time for OTS.
  • Added up/down aiming angle constraint for the JetPack.

Halo: Reach – In Retrospect

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is out, and it’s time to go back to the beginning and remember the trilogy’s origin as a game changing experience that spanned over a decade and influenced the modern games of today. But before we do so, I wish to honor the franchises most recent release; Halo: Reach. Halo: Reach released  last year on Tuesday, September 14th as the sixth title in the franchise, earning over $200 million on its launch day and gaining critical acclaim as some would dare call the “Best Halo title yet”. Is this true? Is this the best Halo title yet? Others have spoken, and now well over a year after its release, its time for MP1st’s retrospective review of this great game.

Come with me and look upon the Fall of Reach.

SINGLEPLAYER

Halo: Reach is set in the year 2552, detailing the exploits of the Noble Team, and its latest member, Noble 6. You and your squad are genetically engineered super soldiers, but your different from your SPARTAN II brothers; you are SPARTAN III’s, and you’re expendable. It’s time to see if that will hold true in what will be the fight of your life. The second you step foot onto Reach, the planet is already under attack by the vicious Covenant. Your job is to stop them, and for those who have already played the game, or read the book Fall of Reach, you know how it ends. The truth of the matter is simple: You will fail. But you better make damn sure you take as many of those split-jawed bastards with you. This you do over the span of 10 levels (and an extra one after the credits). For me the campaign is different and unique, not as different as say ODST, but it still holds up. It’s a great campaign, but for me, it lacks some of the other games’ gravitas. It’s not bad by any means, but the other games had a certain weight to it when it came to the campaign, this one seems to lack that weight up until the last act when your squad is whittled down to almost nothing. Things really start to kick it in gear then, as the stakes rise, and its a race against time to save humanity’s last, best hope. Once you’ve completed your mission, all that’s left to do is fight. To the death. And the ending for me brought a newfound light on Master Chief’s adventure on the first Halo (Installation 04), and in my opinion, one of the saddest and emotional scenes in the franchise’s history. It works, and the final act alone cements this as an ending I would dare call back to The Empire Strikes Back, in which a rarity occurs among the eternal struggle of Good vs Evil: The bad guys win. But any Halo fan knows that this ending is just the beginning of the end for the victors (the Covenant), and that the next couple months after the fall of Reach are the sweetest yet for the UNSC.

Now on to what you’ve all been waiting for:

MULTIPLAYER (competitive)

As you know, Bungie has offered substantial content for both those who play competitive, and co-op multiplayer. Competitive takes the regular form of multiplayer, which consists of Slayer (Deathmatch), Team Slayer (Team Deathmatch), Capture the Flag, King of The Hill, Oddball, and even some new modes like Headhunter, plus my personal favorite, Invasion. Multiplayer is completely redone, and retooled for the game, adding new and devastating weapons such as the DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle), Needle Rifle, Plasma Launcher, and Grenade Launcher, and also adding a new edition to the game called Armor Abilities.

Armor Abilities are exclusive armor enhancements to the SPARTAN’s MJONIR armor. These are upgraded (or downgraded in canon terms) versions of Halo 3‘s Equipment. One of the biggest differences between the two now is that they are no longer pickups (although they can be if you enable them to). Instead, they come equipped in your armor ready to go and are reusable at any time, although you can only use one at a time. They dynamically change the way the game is played by giving the player the ability to Sprint down the battlefield, use an Armor Lock that makes you invincible, but also unable to move, deploy a Hologram that, when used correctly, can fool anyone whose not paying attention, and even deploy a Dropshield that creates a giant temporary bubble shield around a player (or players) that both protects them and heals them. The Armor Abilities are in most cases balanced, but two of them, in my opinion, have been a bit problematic since launch. They are Armor Lock, and Active Camoflauge (Invisibility). Armor Lock immobilizers the player, but makes them invincible for a period of 5 to 10 seconds. While I initially saw no problems with this AA (Armor Ability), I did farther down the line start to see some faults in it. In a way, it gives the player who activates it more Pros, than Cons, and doesn’t seem to balance both out. For example, when activated, the player  kneels down to become invincible, if they are stuck with a Sticky Grenade before the activation of Armor Lock and activate it milliseconds before detonation, they survive, making that a wasted grenade you just threw. Also, if activated before a speeding vehicle such as a Ghost or Warthog ram into them, they can switch it on at the last second to cause said vehicle to explode from the impact of ramming into you. Then theres the EMP that releases when you come out of Armor Lock, which also increases in radius the longer your in Armor Lock up until it’s deactivation.

Ranking up is also redone, making it faster, and more streamlined in the form of Credits (money). Instead of just ranking up military ranks, players now gain Credits for each match completion, and their performance during each match, whether that be medals which players earn through certain feats, winning a match, or even just completing a match. You earn Credits, and you rank up levels in what is, in my opinion, the easiest, and most satisfying way yet for Halo. What do you do with these Credits you might ask? You have the ability to buy new armor for your SPARTAN (purely cosmetic), which in turn, you can buy smaller  parts to go with it as well. Along with those permutations, you can also obtain different colored visors, helmet effects (fire, lightning, or even Grunt Birthday Party), different voices for yourself in Firefight, and even unlock Covenant Elite armor which, fortunately, you won’t have to buy, but must rather earn through ranking up in the game. I will say it is fairly easy to unlock them all early on, however. All of these things you can buy, and they contribute to the overall longevity to the game.

In usual Halo fashion, the gameplay is top notch. Headshots are easier than ever to pull off, and getting a multi-kill is just as fun as ever. With a little aim assist in multiplayer, things go much faster in Reach, and all-in-all, thats a very good thing. It makes the rewards for that HELL’S JANITOR all the more sweeter.

Still some problems persist. Along with the overuse of Armor Lock, and it not being nerfed as much as it should, I do think Cloaking should be a bit more powerful, as it only last for what feels like milliseconds. And while I did say the aim assist helps in Reach, it sometimes works a little too well, and can be a bit overcompensating for those players who have been at it since the original’s release. A future update to patch some of these little misgivings would be nice. It sounds like I’m nitpicking, but hey, the games not perfect, no game is. Still, after a year and four months, I wished either Bungie or 343 Industries had fixed these little discrepincies.

One thing that the game is extremely lacking is maps. Not the quantity, but the quality. Every map, save for the DLC, is ripped straight from campaign. This infuriates me. After Halo 2 & 3, for me, the bar was set pretty high by Bungie to continue with great maps, such as Lockout, Valhalla, Battle Creek, Blood Gulch, and Headlong. With Halo 3, Bungie shipped an excellent amount of maps that were also diverse in their locations and battlefield play outs. This doesn’t seem to be the case with Halo: Reach. It caters to the more enclosed, infantry tactics instead of appealing to both sides with both infantry and vehicles. It seems like a missed opportunity that they failed to execute considering the amount of diverse environments and locations all around Reach. Even its Forge maps that shipped with the game are all clustered around Forge World. While they do mix up some of the gameplay, they lack the originality of an “actual” map and get boring quickly. This, to me, is a disservice, as Bungie is known for listening to fans and appealing to them. They opted out to move away from Reach and focus on their new project, instead of putting the love and support they are usually known for into it. Unlike the DLC of Halo 2 & 3, where they did let out a steady flow DLC, as of this time, there have only been two map packs; The Noble and Defiant map packs, each featuring three maps each, and only one featuring an Invasion, the other a Firefight. More DLC may be on its way, but it’s highly unlikely considering the release of Halo 4 is later this year and 343 Industries is putting all of its efforts into that instead. This was, and still is a major disappointment in a series known for great maps. It is very unfortunate to have a great game not being supported the way it should be.

CO-OP, CUSTOM GAMES, FIREFIGHT, THEATER

Co-op has been refined to make things all the more smooth between you and your friends fragging Grunts. Firefight takes its second foray into the series and is slightly changed up to provide a faster, more streamlined experience with a countdown timer instead of ODST’s wave dispenser. But luckily for those who like the original’s Firefight, it’s only an option away. I do like how Bungie mixed up Firefight a bit with some new modes like Generator Defense (where you defend three generators from the Covenant until the timer runs out), and Versus Firefight (where a team of two Elites with AI buddies take on a team of two Spartans whose simple goal is to survive until the round ends). Unfortunately these two modes don’t make it into Firefight Matchmaking and are instead only accessible in the custom games.

Co-op for the campaign is greatly challenging and can increase in difficulty even at Legendary, which gives an already fun campaign a very tense and frantic feeling that gets better with each play through.

Forge returns from Halo 3, and is just as fun as ever with more Forge options and capabilities. One thing Bungie excelled at with Forge this time around was the inclusion of a Forge World map, which lets you Forge all around the map. Now while the whole map isn’t open to Forging, a vast percentage of it is, and like Halo 3, an insane amount of crazy and creative maps usually ensue, which is usually a sign of a great time. Props to Bungie for thinking outside of the box. Although they did add some improvements to Forge such as Forge World and some new tools, the inclusion makes Forging on other maps seem obsolete, save for a few of the bigger maps, but even they are limited. Bungie made Forge more accessible and fun, but like with the rest of the multiplayer package, they focused on quantity rather than quality. Where as Halo 3’s maps could all have a layer of fun added to them with the inclusion of Forge, most of Reach’s maps are indoors and enclosed, leaving them without the crazier antics of the last game. Theater makes a return from 3 as well and it has some minor improvements, but none worth throughly examining. Although the option to view a game with friends has been axed, a well thought-out community system in which game types, videos, maps, and pictures can all be streamlined through the Bungie Favorites, and your own Bungie Pro. As for Custom Games, they remain the same as Halo 3, but unfortunately lack a custom games matchmaking system, which some fans have clamored for since Halo 3.

CLOSING REMARKS

Halo:Reach is one of the best games of 2010 and a solid entry in the Halo series. It has some mistakes here and there, but it is an overall great entry in a stellar series. If your new to the series, I would suggest starting out with this one if your in it for the story, and characters.  If your here for the multiplayer, and co-op, then I suggest this as well, but be sure to give the others a try as well. Halo: Reach has my thumbs up. With the passing of the torch between Bungie and 343 Industries, I can only hope the transition of 10 years of everything great Bungie has done with the series continues. I also hope that Bungie can go on to create more great games, and that 343 Industries can continue the trend of creating stellar entries in the Halo series. For now, Reach and Anniversary will do, but Halo 4 needs to be a game changer. It needs to change the way we play games like the first three did. It needs to be something we not only can care about, but something that we’ll remember just the same way as we remember storming the beach on the Silent Cartographer in Combat Evolved, our first headshot on Lockout in Halo 2, and our first Forge created map in Sandtrap. Heres to a close on Bungie’s last Halo game, and the hopes of an even better future with 343 and the rest Halo series. Halo: Reach was good. Now let’s hope Halo 4 rocks.

Heres to Halo 4.

End of Line

DICE Responds to Hackers Banning Innocent BF3 Players

Just yesterday, an attack on PC Battlefield 3 players ensued when a group of hackers, determined to show DICE/EA the error of their ways, in regards to using Punkbuster as an anti-cheat/hack program, found a way to ban players from the Battlefield.

For more information, check out yesterday’s post right here. Today, we have a bit of new info from Community Manager, Daniel Matros, as well as some basic suggestions you can follow to avoid being “fake-banned”.

One concerned fan asked Matros if it is safe to play on servers with PB (Punkbuster) or GGC-Stream enabled. Matros replied, “right now, I’d recommend playing on servers that aren’t streaming it until GGC are sorted out.” Currently, these bans are only possible on servers with these programs enabled. Matros also answered, “yes please,” to fans asking if they should update to the newest version of PB after the situation is dealt with.

Also, a notice on the front page of the Battelog was added reading: “The ‘Game disconnected: you were kicked by Punkbuster errors’ are being looked into right now.”

MW3 Patch 1.08 Notes – Shotgun Tweaks, Theater Improvements, Akimbos Nerfed

In an interview with the guys over at Machinima Respawn, Modern Warfare 3’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, detailed exactly what was included in the latest patch, 1.08, now live on the Xbox 360 and soon to be on the PlayStation 3 and PC.

Shotguns:

“Nerfed the Striker a little bit, buffed the rest of the shotguns.” When it comes specifically to the Striker, Bowling mentioned that they “reduced the amount of pellets it used. So, right now, all the shotguns should be 9 pellets and the striker’s 6 pellets.” They also “slightly reduced spread and damage” of the Striker.

Akimbos:

“We also nerfed Akimbos across the boards. So, not just FMG9’s but Akimbos across the board should have a lower fire-rate now.”

Theater:

“A ton of theater improvements and fixes” also made it into the patch. “So, if anybody was having trouble viewing their clips, or getting error 7 or getting the black screen stuff – all of that stuff should be gone.” Bowling also added that “YouTube uploads should be 100 times faster than they were when we launched now,” or at least “it’s nearly 100 times faster, just under 100 times.”

General:

Also included were “more tweaks to lag compensation, or host advantage.” Now, it “should be better when you’re host, if you have a fast connection.” Also, “there’s general network improvements that we did,” as well as some “bug fix stuff.” Unfortunately, no specifics were given regarding bug fixes. Bowling also mention that there was some improvements made to the “banning stuff.” It also goes without saying that support for the new maps were also included in this patch.

To be added tonight:

Bowling recently announced that maps would be receiving more “weight” tonight, meaning that they would show up more often in the map rotation.

Update 1 (more on bugs):

Bowing recently added these notes to the official Call of Duty forums:

Networking enhancements, Theater improvements and fixes, Further improvements to “Host Disadvantage” / “Lag Comp”, Increased speed of YouTube uploads from 32k to 256k, Nerf to all Akimbo weapons (reduced fire rate), Shotgun re-balance (Slight nerf to Striker, slight buff to all other shotguns), Fix that prevents some users from not receiving their prestige token after prestiging, fix stat bug that retains “games played” stat across prestiges.

Update 2 (Hotfix):

Bowling has stated that we should “expect a 50% decrease to the fire rate of all Akimbo weapons in MW3. We’re doing a hotfix tonight to properly nerf them.”

Modern Warfare 3 Might Receive Weapon DLC Drops

Robert Bowling stated that gun DLC is “possible” for future Modern Warfare 3 DLC packs.

During a Machinima live stream, when asked by a fan on whether weapon DLC, gun drops, could be coming to Modern Warfare 3. Robert Bowling teased by saying, “it’s possible. We have the opportunity. We have the technology. We can do it.” However, he added that he “can’t confirm if we will or not, but we are completely open to everything.” He then jokingly added that “it could be potato gun/launcher”.

Recently, Bowling also hinted at weapon camo packs a few days ago, he stated that it “would be cool, but we haven’t confirmed any weapon camo packs.”

What gun would you like to see added to Modern Warfare 3? Ak-74u would be my choice.

Modern Warfare 3 Patch 1.08 Now Live on Xbox 360 – Coming Soon for PC and PS3

Update 3: MW3 1.08 Patch Notes revealed.

Update 2: We asked Bowling on whether the PS3 and PC versions of the game will receive the patch anytime soon, he answered, “yes, it will be coming out shortly for PS3 and PC. The PS3 version of the patch had PS3 exclusive updates that delayed it slightly.”

Update 1: Bowling has stated that the patch has changed the following, “improved lag comp, theater fixes, nerf to Striker, buff to all other shotguns, upload to YouTube faster.”

Original Story: Infinity Ward has finally released the long awaited patch 1.08, title update #8, for Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360.

The patch is now available to download on the 360 when you log into the multiplayer portion of the game. It will set you back 5MB in memory, unlike previous 4MB patches.  The patch was released along side the first DLC drop for Xbox 360. Unfortunately, at the moment, the full list of patch notes haven’t been released. However, from what we have gathered from our earlier reports and limited  first hand experience, here is a tentative fix list:

  • Extended mags glitch on some shotguns has been ironed out.
  • Fix for out of memory 7 error.
  • Enemy Stealth Bomber color blind mode glitch removed.
  • Possible improvements to lag compensation.

It’s still unknown when the patch will become available to PS3 and PC users. Specially that the PS3 version will be seeing more fixes than the others.
