Super Mega Baseball 4 Review – Playing With Legends

Baseball may not be the most widespread sport ever created, but it’s impossible to disregard the excitement and anxiety present in every match, even if you’re not the most die-hard fan. This much has been translated into videogames throughout the years, and the Super Mega Baseball franchise is one of the most effective, if not popular, attempting another home run with Super Mega Baseball 4. Don’t be fooled by the cartoon visuals and the cheerful butt-scratching, this is one deep simulation that will demand the most of you right off the bat.

So Much to Manage, So Little Time

Knowing the basics of the sport but not being a hardcore fan, my viewpoint on Super Mega Baseball 4 will be one of a curious and interested outsider, always open to learning and understanding the inner workings of a fine sport. After some time playing matches and messing around with my team, it’s easy to see that this is a game betting on continuity and expansion, improving on the solid bases of the series but never trying to mess with a formula that works.

At first glimpse, Super Mega Baseball 4 may look like a casual arcade sports game on the surface, with its cartoon characters and over-the-top commentary and nonsense, but under the hood you will find a complex, enthralling, sometimes daunting look at the sport, with massive choices such as Season, Franchise, or the cross-platform competitive game mode Pennant Race. Obviously, you can dive into a single Exhibition match to hone your skills or simply to enjoy a quick game.

Super Mega Baseball 4 Review

The main feature coming with this edition is the inclusion of Legends, a first for a series that had its origins deeply rooted in the indie segment, ultimately earning critical acclaim, and encouraging Electronic Arts to acquire developer Metalhead in 2021. Joining a roster of oddball athletes such as Mash Taters, Jack Cracker, and Volt Bolter are over 200 famous names of the sport, covering various decades. Gone out of the window is the unlicensed nature of Super Mega Baseball, now giving a heartwarming welcome to these stars that you can play alongside offbeat names that have been a staple of the series for years.

With this comes the Legends league mode, picking teams according to era, and there’s the option to mix and match Legends and made-up characters in Shuffle Draft, as each team picks one player per round to create the ultimate dream team. There are also six new stadiums created in the same imaginative style, 55 more traits, and new features that have been requested by the community, such as two-way players.

But there’s also a significant overhaul to the visual side of things, upgrading the cartoon visuals and refining the animations and stadiums. It’s a great looking game if you enjoy the art direction, and some of the plays are quite exciting to watch, with mistimed dives and long throws that feel close to the real thing. However, there seems to be room for improvement when the outfielders pick up the ball, with a slight animation delay while rotating for the throw.

Play Ball

Super Mega Baseball 4 Review

Beyond the cartoon looks lies a game of skills, timing, and plenty of elements at work. Player traits are substantial ways of affecting a game and can be good or bad, eventually impacting player skills and even affecting other players. There are some specific requirements for a trait to trigger, and they come with three levels of potency, both for positive and negative, being the result of team chemistry.

Team chemistry comes in five varieties, one per player: competitive, spirited, disciplined, scholarly, and crafty. Every player in your team contributes to the ranking of each chemistry, even those who are on the bench. Reaching a certain tier of team chemistry will give you small to major benefits, so it’s always worth checking out the overall disposition when drafting a new player.

When you enter the field, controlling the hitter and the pitcher in turns, the atmosphere is remarkably cheery and confident. Swinging your bat may in part be affected by your traits and team chemistry, but ultimately, it’s up to you to find the sweet spot where you are going to knock that ball out of the park. Aligning the cursor with the oncoming ball is easier said than done, even more when you must judge your strength as well, again with perfect timing. It may not sound like rocket science, but only the perfect combination will result in a magnificent hit.

Pitching is more about varying your throws and confusing the opponent. Align your aim to maximize strength and efficiency, throw a few curveballs here and there, and hope that you reach those three strikes. And then you have all the other strategies at your disposal to win the game, including positioning of infield and outfield, diving and sliding, throwing a pitchout, and so much more.

If things are becoming too difficult, the ego system once again can be changed mid-game to your convenience. It’s a choice that may not suit everyone as it feels like you are cheating the challenge as you go, and standard difficulty levels may have felt more rewarding for some, but this is what’s in the game.

True Legend?

Super Mega Baseball 4 Review

The extent of the additions to Super Mega Baseball 4 isn’t going to change the fundamentals of the series, and a quick glance at the previous chapter shows that there are many points in common. A great game just got better, bulkier, but it’s not cutting ties with the past. There’s still the same mix of depth and silliness, with broken bats out of rage or a badly aimed swing, an umpire that mixes English with Spanish wording, and an unhealthy dose of butt scratching, but that’s part of the sport… maybe?

Super Mega Baseball 4 is a thrilling, fun, and intricate take on the sport. There’s no denying its quality and complexity, yet it both welcomes players who want some quick baseball matches and those who are in it for the long run. The question that remains for long-time fans is if it’s worth stepping into the field mostly for the new Legends, the visual upgrade, and a few more additions that make it a solid game. It’s great baseball for sure, but consider the above before joining the draft.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros

  • Fun for all skill levels
  • Incredible depth is there if you want to dive into it
  • Great atmosphere and cartoon graphics
  • Legends finally add real players

Cons

  • Not a major leap from the previous game

RoboCop Rogue City: 20-30 Hours Long With Multiple Endings, Pacifist Options, Investigations, and More; New Gameplay Shoots Out

New gameplay footage and early impressions for Teyon’s upcoming RoboCop: Rogue City have been released, and the game looks stellar! Key takeaways from the video include RoboCop: Rogue City being set between RoboCop 2 and 3. The game’s campaign is roughly 20-30 hours in length, providing a substantial amount of content for the players.

The gameplay footage is a little over 10 minutes, and takes a deeper look into RoboCop: Rogue City’s content and mechanics. You can check out the gameplay and impressions for yourselves below:

RoboCop’s slow movement is also talked about in the video. This is a result of RoboCop having a pretty hefty armor. However, despite the slower pace, judging from the gameplay footage, it seems like defending yourselves from enemies should be relatively easy due to the heavy armor. Though, one can still assume that running from them will be an issue.

Another intriguing aspect mentioned in the gameplay is the emphasis on investigation. Once gamers step in the shoes of RoboCop, they conduct investigations including uncovering clues and making arrests, adding depth to the overall gameplay, going beyond just bland encounters and shooting.

There’s also an upgrade system in RoboCop: Rogue City. Players have the opportunity to customize and upgrade various skills and armor. On top of that, Rogue City features side quests, dialogue trees, and pacifist options, with multiple endings to the narrative allowing players to create a more personalized experience.

RoboCop: Rogue City is scheduled for release in September 2023 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S. With its unique setting, engaging detective mechanics, and upgrade system, the game holds promise for both RoboCop fans and everyday gamers alike.

Two Diablo 4 Expansions Confirmed in the Works by Blizzard

While Diablo 4 hasn’t officially been released just yet (it’s available in early access now, with the full launch on June 6), Blizzard already has content incoming for players in the form of Diablo 4 expansions (DLC), and not just one, but two are already in the works.

This was confirmed by Diablo franchise General Manager Rod Fergusson in a new video chat with Kinda Funny Games. In it, Fergusson talks about the dev team’s structure and how you need to develop a game in a sustainable way where there they aren’t too burnt out when the game launches.. He also explains how things in Diablo 4 need to be developed in parallel given how it takes longer to make a season than to play it, and in the process, causally confirmed that there are two Diablo 4 expansions in the works.

When you’re making a game like this you have to make it in a sustainable way. You can’t, you know, push the team such that when you get to launch day, you cross this Finish Line and everybody falls over exhausted. Because guess what? You have a season coming you have the week two patch coming, because there’s some balance changes or what have you, so you have to build your team and your structure around a way that you can do that sustainably – because you’re kind of always shipping in a way, and in fact that’s something we talk about is we have to build things in parallel.

You know, right now, as I sit here, you know we’re about to launch the main game we’re finishing up Season One, we’re working on Season Two, we’re working on expansion one, we’re kicking off expansion two. All that’s happening right now and so we haven’t even launched the game yet, So, like, you have to have a team that can work in that parallel way [so that] because it takes longer to make a season than it is to play a season, so you can’t, just like, wait till the season ends and start a new one; you have to already be mostly, you know, done by that time, and so that just takes a lot of rigor and resiliency on the team and that’s what’s been great about this team is that they’ve really embraced the sort of parallel structure and the ability to be able to do that in a sustainable way. – Rod Fergusson, Diablo General Manager

Given past Diablo games, an expansion is something players will undoubtedly expecting. As for the game’s season, expect Season 1 to kick off this July, and you’ll need to have beaten the game’s campaign to take part in it. Read up on the first season and the different kinds of Battle Passes right here.

This was announced by the none other than the official Battlefield Twitter account, which tweeted the following:

Xbox Games Showcase: Microsoft Confirms 2 Hour Showcase With No Full CGI or Movie Trailers

Ahead of Xbox’s upcoming Games Showcase, Aaron Greenberg, Vice President of Xbox Marketing has provided some details on what fans can expect to see at the showcase, including no full CGI trailers for Xbox first-party games, no movie trailers, and more.

Greenberg initially took to Twitter to share his excitement about the upcoming showcase, saying there’s only “7 days until our first ever double feature. He confirms that the showcase is “roughly two hours of non stop games, games, games, games, and Starfield!”

Xbox Showcase CGI

Xbox Games Showcase will follow directly with a Starfield Direct which would give fans a deep dive into the world of Starfield. The length of both of these shows combined is roughly two hours according to the VP of Microsoft games marketing.

Then, Aaron went on to reply to a series of tweets and questions from the fans. When a fan suggested that Xbox should show gameplay instead of CGI for its games at the showcase, Greenberg confirmed that none of Xbox’s first party “are full CG trailers.” Games shown will either be in-game footage, in-engine footage, or in-game footage with some cinematics. He also adds that the trailer would be labeled to provide more clarity for fans.

Xbox Showcase CGI

Replying to another fan, the VP also confirmed that the showcase will have no movie or TV show trailers which was a common complaint by fans in last week’s PlayStation Showcase. Fans who were hoping to see the trailer for the upcoming Fallout TV show at the Xbox Games Showcase will have to wait a bit longer.

Xbox Showcase CGI

Last year, Xbox took a new approach with its showcase. They only showed games that were coming out in the next “12 months.” However, things didn’t turn out in Xbox’s favor with many of the games at the showcase shown being delayed or having no fixed release date for the first half of 2023, including its first-party titles, Starfield and Forza Motorsport.

However, some fans still believed that Xbox will keep the same “Next 12 Months” marketing approach for this year’s showcase. But, Greenberg stated otherwise, confirming that Microsoft will be dropping this approach for its upcoming show next week. He replied a firm “No” when asked about it on Twitter.

Xbox Showcase CGI

Here’s a short summary of everything confirmed for the Xbox Games Showcase:

  1. No “full CG” trailers for Xbox first-party games
  2. Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct will be “roughly two hours”
  3. There will be no movie or TV show trailers
  4. Microsoft won’t be reusing the “Next 12 Months” marketing approach

Xbox Games Showcase is set to stream on June 11 at 1 pm ET, followed directly by Starfield Direct. Xbox Games Showcase Extended will follow suit on June 13 at 1 pm ET and will feature detailed interviews focused on the announcements made at the showcase.

Over on the studio’s website that marks the studio’s 25th anniversary, it has a countdown that ends on June 14 at 12 am ET/9 am PT/9 pm HKT. There’s nothing of significance there other than a huge message stating “Something’s gonna happen.” in cursive writnig.

For reference, Grasshopper’s latest released game is No More Heroes 3 which was released back in 2021 on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Could it be a new entry in the franchise or something new altogether? We’ll know for sure in a few days’ time.

What are you hoping to see from the studio? Sound off and let us know down below.

Capcom Sends Out Resident Evil Survey Asking Fans What Game They Should Remake Next

Capcom has sent out a Resident Evil survey asking fans which game in the franchise deserves a remake next. This suggests that the publisher isn’t quite done with remaking Resident Evil games, which is to be expected given much each new remake sells.

In the new survey, Capcom asks fans a number of questions pertaining to the Resident Evil franchise, from how much they would recommend it to things like how their social channels are performing. However, upon nearing the final page, Capcom leaves an open-ended question, asking fans which Resident Evil game they would like to see them remake next.

While this news doesn’t confirm that Capcom is for sure remaking more Resident Evil games, we wouldn’t put it past them to want to keep the trend going since most of the Resident Evil remakes (if not all) have found success, not just reception-wise (read why it’s a perfect 10 in our review) but sales-wise too. We can’t imagine Capcom not doing another remake, though I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how things go.

Which does beg the question, which Resident Evil game would you like to see get the remake treatment next? Is it Code: Veronica’s turn or should Resident Evil 5 be the next one line? Or, do you think it might be time for Capcom to move on to another series, like, I don’t know, Dino Crisis? Let us know down in the comments.

Diablo 4 Update Hotfix 3 for June 4 Fixes Stolen Artifice Quest & More

While we just got a client-side patch for Diablo 4 earlier today, Blizzard Entertainment has now released Diablo 4 update hotfix 3 for June 4! This is a server-side patch that fixes the Stolen Artifice quest and more.

Diablo 4 Update Hotfix 3 for June 4 Patch Notes:

HOTFIX 3 – JUNE 4, 2023 – 1.0.2

A server-side hotfix was rolled out this evening. Server-side hotfixes occur in the background and will not require a client-side patch.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where Astaroth would destroy the house before moving to it, which would prevent completion of the “As the World Burns” quest.
  • Fixed an issue where Multiple Darcels would spawn during the “Stolen Artifice” quest which would block quest progression.
  • Further stability fixes

That seems to be it. Once a new patch is released, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Sony: Cloud Gaming “An Amazing Business Model;” Cites Latency as Biggest Issue

It’s no secret that a lot of companies think cloud gaming is the future of the industry. Microsoft has the Xbox Cloud Gaming initiative, NVIDIA has the Shield cloud device and more. While more and more companies are moving forward with cloud gaming, not everyone is on-board the idea, and Sony thinks it knows why.

Speaking in an interview, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida states that while he sees cloud gaming as “an amazing business model,” he sees latency as the main issue why it hasn’t caught taken off just yet,

“I think cloud itself is an amazing business model, but when it comes to games, the technical difficulties are high,” said Yoshida, citing latency — the fast response times demanded by gamers — as the biggest issue. “So there will be challenges to cloud gaming, but we want to take on those challenges.”

Yoshida does have a point. I mean, if you’re playing an online-centric game, chances are, you won’t want to play via cloud, as that will hand the gamer a severe disadvantage. Not only that, but even in single-player games, latency could also affect the time of your button press to what’s happening on-screen depending on the internet speed, lag spikes and whatnot.

Sony’s cloud gaming efforts are still on-going with the PlayStation Now service currently being offered to PS4 and PS5 gamers.
