PGA Tour 2K23 Update 1.09 Brings Crossplay & Ranked Matchmaking This Feb. 22

HB Studios has swung out PGA Tour 2K23 update 1.09, and this brings the much-awaited crossplay functionality and even Ranked matchmaking into the fold! Read on for what’s new in the PGA Tour 2K23 Feb. 22 patch notes.

PGA Tour 2K23 Update 1.09 Patch Notes | PGA Tour 2K23 Feb. 22 Patch Notes:

Here’s the announcement from the studio:

Via the latest patch update, players can now tee off against one another via crossplay in Private Matches, Casual Matchmaking, and Ranked Matchmaking. Supported platforms include PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). By default, crossplay is always on for PC, but can be disabled on Xbox by checking the system settings, and can be toggled on and off in-game on PlayStation. It’s time to show your friends who has the longest drives and the best approach shots.

Proving to your friends that you’re the best golfer is one thing, but do you think you’ve got what it takes to be the best in the world? If so, head over to Ranked Matchmaking where you can join competitive rounds and climb experience tiers. Ranked play is broken down into six tiers with three divisions in five of the six tiers, with each tier having a unique icon and color to differentiate what rank you are.

Across all Ranked matches, Solo and Duo, players will compete with Pro difficulty turned on and be limited to their MyPLAYER creation. It’s worth noting that Duos are Alternate Shot, while Solo is regular match play. You can see how you measure up against other players by checking the dedicated Solo and Duo leaderboards.

This should help hike up the challenge for virtual golfers everywhere. Those on PS4 and PS5, don’t forget to turn on crossplay to make use of this new feature!

The Division 2 Season 11 Release Date Set for Feb. 28; Livestream Event Dropping Feb. 27

After an unfortunate delay and a development mishap, Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft have announced that The Division 2 Season 11: Reign of Fire will now begin on February 28. A Twitch livestream event has been set for the day before on February 27, which will go over the new content and changes coming to the game with Season 11.

The Division 2 Season 11: Reign of Fire was originally set to debut on February 7, but a series of issues with the game’s localization process forced the developers to indefinitely delay the launch of the new season. Matters worsened further when the game’s build generation system broke while the development team was attempting to fix said localization issues, leaving them unable to release new updates for the game or extend Season 10’s activities in the meantime.

It appears that all is well now: Massive Entertainment has successfully repaired all malfunctioning systems and has already extended Season 10’s activities as of February 10. Season 11: Reign of Fire now has a release date of February 28, and the developers will be discussing what to expect from the new season in a Twitch livestream on February 27. The stream will be hosted over at The Division’s official Twitch channel, and will go live at 10:15am ET/7:15am PT/5:15pm CEST/3:15pm GMT/11:15pm HKT.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Amazon Luna. Stay tuned here at MP1st for all updates and announcements about The Division 2.

Blood Bowl 3 Review – No Rules, Great Sport

Blood Bowl is back for another turn of vicious matches where following the rules is less important than bending them. The third official videogame adaptation by Cyanide Studio based on the successful Games Workshop board game franchise, Blood Bowl 3 follows the latest rules and adds new content to keep these matches fresh and visceral, just as the bloodthirsty crowd loves it.

Be Aggressive, B-e Aggressive

As a newcomer to the franchise, I won’t be able to dive into complex comparisons with the previous outings and will scrutinize Blood Bowl 3’s merits on its own. But picking up on the complex term, this is a proper label for the game. Ignore the brutal cinematic cutscenes as these are only there to illustrate a significant match moment, and focus on the tactical and extremely slow-paced turn-based gameplay that will resonate with diehard fans of tabletop games and lengthy sessions. That is what Blood Bowl 3 is all about – a brutal tactical sport with a fair dose of arbitrariness to the outcome of each action.

Skipping the tutorial is a surefire way of getting your dreams crushed, along with your players’ skulls. Learning the basics is a must, but understanding how the advanced systems work is crucial if you have any intention of ever scoring a touchdown. An early misconception is that the randomness from dice rolls plays the biggest role in the end result of a match, and you’re right to think so – even the simple action of picking up the ball can fail and lead to a turnover.

Blood Bowl 3 Review

However, experience will show you that there are ways to turn the odds in your favor, from organized player positioning to assists, passing, and more. While you will never completely move away from the RNG-based actions, you will get to a stage where tactics and intelligent interpretation of each play may spare you from constantly hoping for a miraculous dice roll. Iteration, iteration, iteration… such must be your approach until you reach a superior understanding of the strengths of your team and the way that the AI behaves in each situation.

Risk management is a good way to describe your actions on the field. Will you try to rush with the ball through a group of opposing players and hope that the dice rolls favor you, or do you prefer to take a slower approach by grouping various players around your main and protect them as you move towards the goal line? There’s tactic to this bloody mayhem, along with the countless statistics and abilities powering it under the hood – the more you understand what makes it tick, the better you will be at it.

There are many factors to take into consideration, starting with team selection. You can pick the classic Orcs, the stylish Dark Elves or the disgusting Nurgle, to name but a few, with varying degrees of mastery difficulty, translated into a clear showing of strong and weak points. You may opt for the automatic creation of a balanced team – recommended for new players – or manually recruit the players that you want within the allotted budget. Try to save some gold for extras such as cheerleaders or the vital dice re-rolls, among a selection of bonuses that could benefit your team instantly or in the long run. You can also change your formation and play around with various customization options, from the team jersey and emblem, right down to the cheerleaders, ball, and dice.

A solo campaign available to all factions is one of the big selling points of Blood Bowl 3, diverting the spotlight from the competitive multiplayer for a few hours. More than an elongated tutorial, this is perfect to hone your skills in more ways than one and to understand how to approach the different types of foes that come your way.

Blood Bowl 3 Review

Nonetheless, the AI does have this exasperating tendency to overthink some of the movements, right to the point where you may start wondering if the game didn’t crash altogether. Patience is a virtue, and in this game it’s more than that, it’s an entry requirement that should be clearly stated on the box.

Some exasperating bugs also rear their ugly heads, such as an opponent character gliding across the field instead of running. But the worst one was the frequent and huge delay when selecting a decisive action such as re-rolling or a special move, something that lasts up to 10 seconds at a time – the game freezes, you are suddenly on hold and hoping that the game resumes, but the scares are real.

Bloody Display of Power

Looking at its predecessor, Blood Bowl 3 doesn’t seem to represent a massive jump in terms of graphical quality. The match atmosphere is suitably gritty, and it get you immersed in the chaos, but you can look at it in the same way that you gaze at the human cheerleaders – they drive your attention initially, but look closely and you’ll notice that there’s still room for improvement. In a nutshell, it’s a nice package that manages to convey the feeling of a cruel sport played by nasty creatures, but a lot more could have been done regarding facial features, as all players from the same position look alike.

On the same subject, I’d like to express some concern over the countless shop pages for player customization. Perhaps the default limitation in player likenesses is intended to push us to the shop, where you can browse seven pages of head, right shoulder, left shoulder, right arm, left arm, and body items. Spread across the various races as they may be, it still doesn’t excuse the lack of face customization.

Blood Bowl 3 Review

Make no mistake, you will lose; you will be frustrated; you will wonder what you did wrong to suffer a humiliating defeat. Such is the predicament of Blood Bowl 3, a savage sport where being skilled just won’t cut it sometimes – you must be almost flawless and have a little bit of luck on your side as well. That’s all part of the process, much in the same way as a player drops the ball in real life, but with an extra splash of blood to sweeten the deal for the bloodthirsty crowd.

Incidentally, the more you play, the more you are bound to enjoy it. Scoring a touchdown is deserving of an actual fist pump for you alone to see, and winning match after match is a feat that won’t leave you cold. Practice makes perfect, even if the road is filled with obstacles in the form of dice rolls.

Blood Bowl 3 is one for fans of tabletop games and especially those who appreciate this specific franchise; players with very little patience for turn-based action and intricate mechanics surely won’t be convinced by this new entry. In the end, the way that the community grows, the quality-of-life improvements that Cyanide manages to add, and how compelling the seasons will be is what will ultimately make or break the game – right now, it’s ferociously good but flawed, and still somewhat far from the revolution that some fans may have been waiting for.

Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • Complex to learn but alluring to master
  • One-of-a-kind mix of strategy and sports
  • Potentially addictive in official competitions

Cons:

  • Limited player customization pushing players to the shop
  • Some bugs and AI delay hindering the experience

Atomic Heart Future Update in the Works Includes FOV Settings; Subtitle Size Options Also Planned

Atomic Heart developer Mundfish is working to add FOV settings to the game following community feedback. For those unfamiliar with what they do, FOV (Field Of View) settings allow the player to adjust the camera’s field of vision, showing you more or less of your surroundings on a screen.

In particular, Mundfish mentions the lack of FOV options, which the studio says it is currently working on.

One of the replies to this tweet included an inquiry on the ability to change subtitle sizes, to which Mundfish also responded that they would “do it.”

As the FOV settings are currently being worked on, it will be included in one of the game’s updates in the near future, and Mundfish plans on giving players a heads-up when they can. While the studio did confirm that they will look into subtitle options, we don’t have a specific timeline for that just yet.

Atomic Heart has great gunplay and stellar graphics, but it falls short on a few crucial elements, such as its story and certain game design aspects. You can read our review of the game here, where we gave it a mediocre 6/10 score.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Gameplay Improvements Include Greater Cosmetic Options, Better Rewards & More

Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor includes a number of gameplay improvements over the original, as revealed in a detailed preview of the game. With fast travel, rideable mounts, improved level design and non-linear exploration routes, better rewards, a diverse range of cosmetics obtainable through gameplay, and much more, the upcoming title is set to expand on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s successful formula while addressing many of the complaints fans may have had with the original game.

Check out a number of these improvements and additions demonstrated in the preview:

The gameplay experience of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is crafted out of a mix of open world and linear environments, with the linear sequences apparently driving story movements while the open world portions emphasize exploration with multiple paths and hidden passages. Cal will need upgrades unlocked throughout the story to be able to fully explore the secrets and rewards of areas like Koboh, which includes puzzle rooms, boss battles, and active combat regions.

Survivor has incorporated a new skill tree system with individual progression paths for Lightsaber stances and stat upgrades, and as such, players will be able to obtain an increased number of Skill Points as well as other rewards through regular exploration. Most notably, Treasure Chests will now regularly offer improved cosmetic rewards, including new outfits and haircuts for Cal.

Respawn is also streamlining open world exploration with the previously announced fast travel feature and rideable mounts, as well as the addition of automatic markers that highlight unexplored passageways, symbols that signify currently inaccessible areas, and helpful player movement trails.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor also indirectly improves combat through refinement of its level and area design. Boss battle arenas are strewn with objects that can be used to the player’s advantage with Force pulls, and enemy armaments such as Rolling Mines can be thrown back to turn the tables on Cal’s foes. Enemy placements will also offer opportunities for Cal to end fights early or avoid them altogether, such as by Force pushing enemies off Koboh’s mountain ledges.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor deploys April 28, 2023 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Check out the nine-minute gameplay video from earlier in February, showcasing the game’s combat and terrain traversal mechanics.

Resident Evil 4 Remake VR Mode to Arrive as Free DLC Upgrade for PlayStation VR2

It looks like more than one Resident Evil title is going to be supported by the newly released PlayStation VR2 headset. A recent announcement revealed that a Resident Evil 4 remake VR Mode will be available as a free DLC for PSVR2 users, which will allow them to play the remade game in immersive virtual reality.

The announcement was made by the official Resident Evil Japanese Twitter account. Here’s the tweet:

And here’s the DeepL English translation, for those curious:

VR mode for “Resident Evil RE:4” will be available as free DLC for PlayStation5/PlayStationVR2.

The Resident Evil 4 remake isn’t the first RE title to receive a free VR DLC for the PSVR2. Resident Evil Village also has its own VR Mode following an update, with a recent gameplay trailer highlighting the immersive nature that virtual reality brings to franchises such as Resident Evil. It’s worth noting that the original game also has a VR mode for the Meta Quest 2 which was released a couple of years ago, though this VR Mode will obviously feature more modern game design and graphic elements.

Whether you own a PSVR2 or not, it’s nice to see game companies offer a VR mode for titles that can support it, especially when it comes at no cost to the user.

Elden Ring Units Sold Hit 20 Million, FromSoftware to Develop “Various Ways” for Fans to Enjoy Game’s World in the Future

It looks like Bandai Namco has a mega franchise on its hands, as the company has announced that the Elden Ring units sold number has hit over 20 million worldwide!

This was announced by Bandai Namco in a press release where it also teased Elden Ring DLC (or maybe a sequel?).

Combining the development capabilities of FromSoftware and the marketing power of Bandai Namco Entertainment’s overseas network, this title has been supported by fans since its release on February 25, 2022, and has shipped more than 20 million units worldwide to date. It has also received various awards, including “Game of the Year” at “The Game Awards 2022.” The companies would like to thank everyone who has played this game from the bottom of their hearts, and will continue to develop various ways for the fans to enjoy the world of “ELDEN RING” in the future.

As you can see, it mentions how the studio is continuing to develop “various ways” for fans to enjoy the world of Elden Ring in the future. Given how successful the game has been, it’s perfectly logical to expect that some form of premium DLC is in the works.

While nothing has been promised in terms of announcements, the Elden Ring anniversary event is set to kick off in a few days (Feb. 25). You can read more about it here.

Elden Ring has to date, bagged over 200 Game of the Year awards. If you still haven’t played it yet, go read our review where we gave it a perfect 10/10 score, and said, “Elden Ring is clearly the culmination of FromSoftware’s past 13 years of experience and development philosophy of the souls franchise. Miyazaki and FromSoftware have crafted something so massive, special, wondrous and triumphant that it’s unfathomable how they can top it. Easily FromSoftware’s best game to date and a genuine masterpiece.”

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg Waltzes Out July 17, 2023

The original Atelier Marie title is being remade with all-new graphics and gameplay improvements! Gust and Koei Tecmo have announced that their Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg is coming July 17, 2023 to PC, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. The remake will make significant visual and gameplay improvements over the original, including freshly-illustrated stills and character models, a new “Unlimited Mode” to remove the five-year graduation deadline, changes to the controls and tutorials, and a new player guidance system.

Watch the Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg announcement trailer below:

The new remake will bring the original 1997 title to Western audiences for the first time. From the game’s Steam page:

At the Royal Academy of Magic (the Academy for short), Marie is failing in her attempts to study alchemy. One day, she is given an atelier by her professor as part of a special graduation exam. In order to graduate, Marie must complete an item that will impress her professor.

But first, Marie must strive to improve her alchemy skills, collect ingredients, and earn money to hire adventurers and buy recipes and utensils… Add all of that to the synthesis, battles, and quests she must undertake, and it’s clear that she has a lot to do before she’s ready for her exam!

It’s up to you to choose where to begin! Work hard to graduate from the Academy, but be sure to enjoy yourself along the way.

Features of the Remake:
– Updated graphics! Marie and friends brought to life with the latest technology!
Character designs and event illustrations have been revamped, and 2D animations have also been introduced in the remake. In addition, there are now 3D models of characters and stages, so players can enjoy seeing cute mini characters while they move around the map and explore.

– Atelier series origin, adapted to modern times and made more playable!
While maintaining the simplicity and flexibility of the original version, the tutorial and navigation of the game’s features have been expanded and improved. The methods of moving around the city and collecting items in the field have also been modified to meet modern-day demands, ensuring that the remake is even more comfortable and easier to play.

– New elements added to further enhance the game experience!
Fans of the original version of the game, along with newcomers to the Atelier series, will be delighted by the variety of new elements that have been added to the remake. With the new Unlimited Mode, which allows you to play at a more relaxed pace, and the addition of new events that enable interactions with new characters, you can further enjoy the world of “Atelier Marie.”

Additionally, a Digital Deluxe Edition of the game will also be available and will include the following content:

  • The base game
  •  Atelier Marie Plus: The Alchemist of Salburg
  • Gust Extra BGM Pack
  • “Another Look” Costume Set (Set of 33)

Mighty DOOM, a Top-Down Mobile Shooting Game, Announced for March 21 Launch

A new DOOM game was announced, but it’s probably not what you’re expecting. Named “Mighty DOOM,” this shooting game includes the iconic Doom Slayer, the protagonist of the series, fighting his way through hordes of demons in a mobile game. The game will be available for Android and iOS devices with a launch planned for March 21.

Bethesda published an announcement trailer for the game on the official YouTube channel, which you can find below:

Mighty DOOM is an adorably violent top-down, single-touch action shooter introducing the all-new Mini Slayer, set in the animated DOOM universe. Run and gun your way through hordes of adorably violent demons, iconic levels, and challenging bosses as you level up, unlock powerful skills, and upgrade gear and weapons.

Based on the trailer, Mighty DOOM will include rogue-lite elements, which should add more variety and make each run feel different. The game will also contain in-app purchases and ads, according to the official Google Play store page, so make of that what you will.

If the game piques your interest, you’ll want to pre-register for it before the game’s official launch, as doing so will net you a Mini Slayer’s pack that comes with weapon skins, weapon and equipment keys, and currency.

Ravenswatch Early Access on Steam Begins Apr. 6, First Six Playable Characters Revealed

Passtech Games and Nacon have announced that their upcoming roguelike Ravenswatch’s Early Access period on Steam will begin April 6, featuring one chapter and six characters from the full game. These first six playable characters have been revealed in a new gameplay trailer along with their backstories and abilities.

Check out the Ravenswatch gameplay trailer below:

First announced in July last year, Ravenswatch is a four-player co-op roguelike action game with heavy mythological influences and a developed skill progression system. The game sees players assume the role of fallen heroes from old folk tales and urban legends to combat the pervasive Nightmares invading the world of Reverie. From the game’s Steam page:

BANISH THE NIGHTMARE FROM YOUR REALM

The Nightmares are spreading within Reverie, corrupting everything in their path. You must hone your skills and find the strength to defeat the creatures of the Nightmare using unique hero abilities inspired by characters from folk tales and legends.

DYNAMIC GAMEPLAY

To defeat the Nightmare and reach the final chapter, you will need a strong build, focus and excellent teamwork. Increase your fighting power in battles then face the level boss when you feel ready… or when you no longer have a choice.

DARK TALES

The world of Reverie is built on old folk tales and legends. From the three little pigs to Norse mythology to One Thousand and One Nights, the best-known tales are revisited in a dark-fantasy style and add their timeless appeal to the atmosphere of Ravenswatch.

HIGH REPLAY VALUE

Run after run, play as different heroes, make the most of the upgrades and items you find, and explore a randomly generated map with new activities and new enemies.

Ravenswatch will launch in 2024 with a three-chapter story and 10 playable characters. Out of these, the first story chapter and six playable characters will be made available in the Early Access period:

  • Scarlet: Based on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, Scarlet made short work of the Big Bad Wolf in Ravenswatch. Like all those suffering from lycanthropy, she transforms according to the day-night cycle, and her skill set changes depending on her form. During the day, she deftly wields two daggers; while night-time brings out her brutality and thirst for blood.
  • Franz: Franz is the Pied Piper of Hamelin. He uses his Nightmares-corrupted instrument to control a swarm of rats. Using his devastating melodies, he can weaken enemies from range while staying out of harm’s way.
  • Beowulf: The famous Goth king Beowulf bonded with a baby dragon while trying to save his people from the Nightmares. Armed with a heavy two-handed sword, he can summon his flying companion to boost his attacks and block the enemy hordes.
  • Nyss: Based on the famous Snow Queen fairytale, Nyss has lost her healing powers to the Nightmares. She uses her new killing powers to glide freely around the battlefield, slow enemies and riddle them with ice spikes.
  • Aladdin: Aladdin is the famous hero of One Thousand and One Nights. As his wife is trapped in the corrupted lamp, Aladdin takes up arms and confronts the Nightmares to lift the curse. He is an agile melee fighter who can grant a wish for wealth, life or death to override the outcome of a fight.
  • Melusine: Inspired by siren legends, Melusine is infamous for having drowned many humans. Just when she falls in love with one of them, the Nightmares arrive. As she flees, she realises she is carrying the child of her lover and vows to do anything to save her baby. Wielding a devastating magic orb that can guide her wherever she wants, Melusine fights from range and can dive into the ground to escape enemies.

Ravenswatch’s Early Access period begins on Steam on April 6, 2023. The full game will be available for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Atomic Heart Pays Homage to BioShock With an Easter Egg

If you’ve seen any of footage from Atomic Heart, you might (or might not) have gotten some BioShock vibes from it. Regardless of what you felt, developer Mundfish knows that they took some inspiration from the 2007 game, and to pay homage to it, as the developers snuck in a BioShock Easter egg in Atomic Heart!

Note: The video below is near the end of the game and might be considered spoiler-ish for some.

As you can see, there are a number of nods to BioShock in that video, with the most obvious one being the elevator sequence in the first game that introduced us to the world of Rapture. Atomic Heart directly describes this location of looking like a “rapture” while also naming the location Neptune. That, too, most likely isn’t a coincidence either, as one of the location in BioShock is dubbed Neptune’s Bounty.

And of course there’s the lighthouse itself. Sure many games have lighthouses, but how many of them lead to an underwater city? Same as — yep, you guessed it — BioShock.

Even the music that plays is somewhat similar to that in Bioshock.

Regardless of how you may feel about Atomic Heart, this is without a doubt one of the coolest nods to BioShock. And who knows, given what’s been established in BioShock Infinite, could it be possible that Atomic Heart is in some ways yet another alternative reality? Probably not, but remember, there’s always a lighthouse, there’s always a man, there’s always a city.
