Helldivers 2 Next Major Update “Into the Unjust” Launches September 2; New Warbond Out Just Days After

If you thought Helldivers 2 launching on the Xbox Series X|S today, along with the Halo collaboration event, was the only content we’d be getting in a while, think again, as Arrowhead Game Studios has just unveiled the game’s next major update, “Into the Unjust.”

Set to arrive next week on September 2, this update introduces the Gloom threat, which has transformed planets into massive hive worlds filled with terrifying threats both above and beneath their surfaces.

Not Even the Super Destroyer Will Save You in Helldivers 2’s Next Major Update

The “Into the Unjust” update will bring a ton of new content, but the big talk of it, as shown off in the deep dive above, is the Hive Worlds —planets that have been engulfed in the Gloom, with new Terminid threats to be found. While the surface will offer many new deadly foes, it’s the new underground system that this update will introduce that will see players venturing into a deep network of tunnels that are filled with Gloom mutated Terminids.

Players are going to need to work closely together here, too, as while air support from the Super Destroyer has come in rather clutch for many, it’s something Helldivers won’t be able to call upon while exploring the tunnels. The good thing is that new reinforcements (Xbox players) arrived today, as we’ll need all the help we can get to eliminate this new threat.

Additionally, a new Warbond will be released just a few days later, on September 4. This is called the “Dust Devils” Warbnond, and as one might expect, this includes new weapons, cosmetics and more.

Helldivers 2 Next Warbond “Dust Devils” Out on Sept. 4

Here’s an overview of the new items in the Warbond.

Weapons and Stratagems:

AR-2 Coyote
You can hunt in packs or go by your lonesome with this assault rifle that features incendiary ammunition. But be warned: this coyote is wild.

G-7 Pineapple
This cluster frag grenade might look like a cute and unassuming fruit, but it’ll have the bugs in absolute pieces.

S-11 Speargun
A true big game hunter’s companion. The S-11 fires heavy-duty projectiles that release a cloud of gas on impact.

EAT-700 Expendable Napalm
Heat up the planet with this single-use missile that contains napalm cluster bombs.

MS-11 Solo Silo
The long-range power of a missile in a new convenient package. Calls down a Hellpod-sized missile silo with a single, ultra-powerful missile and a handheld targeting remote.

Armos, Capes, and More

DS-42 Federation’s Blade
Captures the essence of armies marching through the desert sands. Wear with the Rightful occupier cape and player card for a polished look.

DS-191 Scorpion
Look like a true nomadic warrior in this desert-proof draped set, pairs perfectly with the Windswept Wayfinder cape and player card.

  • Title: Burier of Heads
  • Emote: Raider’s Cheer
  • Pattern: “Rattlesnake” for vehicles and Hellpods

Expect this to be a sizable download once it’s out, so get ready, grab all the help you can find, because Helldivers 2 Into the Unjust content update launches on September 2, 2025, on PC, the PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

LEGO Voyagers Hands-On Preview – A Heartwarming Cooperative Journey

Light Brick Studio, the creators of LEGO Builder’s Journey, is back again with yet another new LEGO game. However, this time they’re making something a little different, as their newest LEGO project, LEGO Voyagers, moves away from the free-form building and instead focuses on a cooperative puzzle-solving adventure that seems high on spirit and emotions.

We managed to get access to an early demo of the game before its release next month, and yeah, this one might be the most emotionally resonant and heartwarming cooperative experience to come out of the LEGO universe yet.

It Takes Two Blocks

When LEGO Voyagers was first announced two months ago, it piqued my interest because of how different it was from other LEGO games. Rather than being based on an existing IP, with a retelling of the story in a more humorous way, LEGO Voyagers painted itself as an uplifting and whimsical co-op adventure game, more in line with Hazelight’s It Takes Two and Split Fiction, or Thatgamecompany’s Journey. After spending a little over 30 minutes with a press build of the game, I’d say those two examples aren’t too far off from describing LEGO Voyagers, with a slight blend of Katamari Damacy thrown into the mix.

Our demo begins at what appears to be our protagonist’s home, a Red block and a Blue block, both of which have a single eye. It sounds a little creepy, but considering how simple the designs are, they’re actually quite expressive despite not having the ability to talk. Anyway, the game doesn’t have any spoken words or narration, but instead tells its story through the environment and setpieces, with the first major one happening moments after taking control of your character.

It’s launch day, and you and the other block (the other player) have front row viewing of the launch. However, things quickly go wrong for the shuttle launch, as it finds itself veering off course, crashing in some unknown location. This is the setup of the journey, with you and another player venturing off into this unknown LEGO universe to rescue the now-abandoned spaceship.

There’s no UI, there’s no tutorials, no dialogue, basically nothing other than the levels for you to freely explore. You have a goal, and it’s up to you and your partner to find out how to get there. Along the way, you’ll run into obstacles that typically involve you building a structure out of LEGO pieces that are lying around, or platforming, rolling, and using teamwork to progress through the world. The characters themselves don’t have any special abilities, and the way they move is rolling around, which is why I mentioned Katamari Damacy. It’s pretty charming in the way it handles things.

The highlight, though, is without a question the journey itself, because there’s nothing really to guide you through the game other than the wits of the players. I know with PC, I can jump on Discord and talk to someone in a voice chat to figure things out, but I always choose not to. The reason is that I believe this approach creates the most fun in these types of games, and it also shows me how effective puzzles can be when players can solve them without ever saying a word to one another. I loved going through that process, and every time we did figure something out, a big smile ran across my face, and I could tell that there was a moment going on between me and the other player. A sense of accomplishment that we managed to pull something off.

The first major challenge we ran into was a broken bridge, with a small chasm separating us from the next area. Scattered around were large, chunky LEGO bricks that were the exact same color as the missing pieces of the bridge. It took a few moments of rolling around and bumping into the bricks to figure out the solution, which was to push them onto the designated spots on the ground to form a bridge. It was a simple puzzle, but it was a great way to introduce the core mechanic of using the environment and teamwork to progress. We quickly realized that some of the bricks were too heavy for a single character to push, so we had to roll them at the same time to move them into place. It’s a beautifully simple design that forces communication and cooperation without ever saying a word.

The big fun starts when you realize you can connect to the same objects, creating some pretty cool moments. One such example was when we needed to reach steps that were far too high for us to jump to. The solution to this was to connect ourselves to each end of a long pole, and then we took turns tumbling around, allowing gravity and the height of the pole to pull us up each step.

There’s a lot in the world, too, that, well, don’t really do anything other than to be there for you to have fun with. During our playthrough, we kept stopping at the most random things, thinking there was some sort of secret to be uncovered, when all it was was just a place for us to have fun and experiment with—swinging from a tree while the camera pans out so you both can enjoy the serene view, jumping on random blocks, and rolling through flowers and seeing their pedals fly off. It’s pointless, but the kind of pointless that’s just fun and relaxing to do.

What I loved about LEGO Voyagers the most, though, was the general atmosphere created by the gorgeous visuals. While the levels are built entirely out of LEGO bricks, they feel anything but simplistic. The environments are lush with detail, from the way sunlight catches the edges of each stud to the subtle shadows cast by every individual piece. It’s a clean and uncluttered art style that feels handcrafted and deliberate, making the world feel like a real, tangible place that you can lose yourself in. This simple elegance perfectly complements the game’s serene and emotional tone, proving that a game doesn’t need to be filled with noise to make a powerful impact.

With a month to go before launch, I was left pretty impressed by the type of game that Light Brick Studio was building with LEGO Voyagers. There’s a lot of heart behind it, and for a cooperative experience, I can see this being a major hit. It’s a pure, unadulterated experience about friendship, cooperation, and the magic of discovery, and I can’t wait to see the whole journey unfold when it launches next month.

LEGO Voyagers launches on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store on September 15, 2025.

’90s Game Publisher Acclaim Rises From the Dead; Showcase on Sept. 10

If you grew up during the ’90s, then chances are you’ve probably heard of the publisher giant, Acclaim, which helped bring classics such as Mortal Kombat and Turok to the market. Although they would eventually go bankrupt during the early 2000s, it seems they’re preparing for a massive comeback, and it all starts next month with their very first “Play Acclaim” showcase.

Fans of the golden era of gaming will want to pay close attention, as the publisher promises a bold and exciting future that will remain true to its roots.

Acclaim Offers a Glimpse Into Their Showcase Next Month With a Teaser

As announced via social media and a press release, Acclaim is back! That’s right, that mega-publisher from the 90s has returned, after two full decades of being shut down. While we won’t know exactly what they’ve cooked until the “Play Acclaim” event that is airing next month happens, the video above does seem to be teasing the return of many of its classic published titles.

But don’t think for a minute that this is simply about republishing their older titles for modern consoles, as Acclaim’s CEO Alex Josef hints at something “exciting and different” coming from the publisher.

“We’re not here to chase ghosts,” said Alex Josef, CEO of Acclaim. “We’re here to take the energy and chaos that made Acclaim unforgettable and channel it into something new. The old screens are cracking, and what’s coming through is something exciting and different.”

“You can’t rewrite the past,” Josef added. “But you can build upon it. This is about owning our story and moving it into a future that feels bold, energetic, and completely fresh.”

The Play Acclaim showcase will air on September 10, 2025.

Activision Stops Carry Forward for Black Ops 7; Claims It Needs to “Feel Authentic to Call of Duty”

Possibly one of the best news to come out for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has happened today, as Activision has confirmed they are removing the “carry forward” system to the upcoming Call of Duty game.

This means that your skins in Black Ops 6 and in other Call of Duty titles will not carry over to Black Ops 7!

Those Beavis & Butthead skins? Yeah, we won’t see those on Black Ops 7 — at least initially, though we’re not so sure this will solve the game’s skins issue.

Black Ops 7 Takes One Big Step in Making It Right for Players

In a new community update by Call of Duty staff, Activision confirmed they have heard the feedback from players, stating, “We know there’s been a lot of conversation recently about the identity of Call of Duty. Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded. That feedback hits home, and we take it seriously. We hear you.”

The staff then explains what’s changing and why, “Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapons from Black Ops 6 will no longer carry forward into Black Ops 7.” The reasoning behind this? It’s explained as, “Black Ops 7 needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting. That is why Black Ops 6 Operator and Weapon content will not carry forward to Black Ops 7.

However, Double XP tokens and GobbleGums will still carry forward, which is something I think everyone will appreciate.

Also of note, carry forward being removed is only for Black Ops 7, and Warzone will not be affected, meaning you should be able to carry forward your Black Ops 6 skins to Warzone like the norm.

While this is a commendable move, this doesn’t mean Black Ops 7’s skins will be grounded. Just one look at the Vault Edition bonus skins, and you’ll see how not-so-grounded the designs are. Unless you think a soldier with an arc reactor in their chest is grounded, then more power to you.

Given how the Black Ops 7 reveal got ratioed hard, I’m not surprised the developers are making this announcement. Of course, the big test is when Season 1 and succeedng seasons roll out, and whether Activision can resist putting in crossover skins for maximum profit.

Black Ops 7 launches on Nov. 14 on consoles and PC, and one of the pre-order bonuses is beta early access, which kicks off in October. In comparison, check out the leaked Battlefield 6 soldier skins that we’re expecting to be available in the game.

General Updates

Hero Progression Updates

Hero Progression 2.0 rebuilds the system from the ground up with faster leveling, smoother UI, and a permanent prestige system built to flex your grind. Earn animated Ascended borders at milestone levels, unlock Loot Boxes at key breakpoints, and track long-term growth with every Hero. If you’ve been putting in the hours, this is the system that finally shows it off.

  • Hero Level represents how much time you’ve spent playing each hero. Level up your heroes by completing games in any game mode.
  • Progression Level represents how much you play overall. Every time you level up a hero, your Progression Level also goes up.
  • Your hero and account level badges are automatically prestiged after reaching certain levels.
  • Level up your heroes to earn Ascended borders, which displays in most areas during the course of a match. Opponents will not be able to see your Ascended prestige until after the match begins.
  • As you level up, kickstart your cosmetic collection for your favorite heroes by earning Highlight Intros, Emotes, Victory Poses, Player Icons, Credits, and more.
  • Additionally, unlock evolving Name Cards and Player Titles to show off your high level heroes!
  • Progression accolades can be hidden in Streamer Mode settings.

Advanced Information Panel

  • While in a match or the Practice Range, players can now interact with the Hero Information screen to find advanced details about their weapons, abilities, and passives.
  • The following types of information are present for all heroes where relevant: Damage, Healing, Cooldowns, Range, Radius, Effect Durations, Magazine Size, Reload Time, Falloff Ranges, Barrier Health, Overhealth, Overshield, Overarmor, Damage Amplification, Damage Reduction, Movement Speed Modifications, Deployable Health, Shot Spread, Shots Per Volley, Knockback, Charge Times, Energy, and many hero-specific mechanics that don’t fall into the above categories are also included.
  • Some notable exceptions like Ultimate Charge and Rate of Fire are works in progress that we hope to add in future updates. We’re excited to hear your feedback on this feature and we’d love to hear what specific additional information you’d like us to add in the future!
  • Keywords are included to help players understand how they interact with each other.
  • Keyword definitions can be accessed for in-depth explanations of mechanics.
  • Any part of a Keyword definition that is highlighted indicates that this aspect of the definition is not always the same for every instance of this Keyword.
  • Perks are not currently included in this feature.
  • This feature is not supported to calculate for Stadium Powers and Items equipped.
  • This feature is not supported in the Hero Gallery.

Mouse and Keyboard for Consoles

  • Console players can now use a Mouse and Keyboard natively to play Overwatch 2 if they prefer not to use a controller.
  • When it comes to the matchmaking pools, PC Pool and Console Pool will now be referred to as the Mouse and Keyboard Pool and the Controller Pool. This change will be updated in our in-game UI in a future update.
  • When on console and using a Mouse and Keyboard, you will be prompted to switch to the Mouse and Keyboard Pool in order to use a Mouse and Keyboard to play the game with. If you do not accept to switch to the Mouse and Keyboard Pool, your Mouse and Keyboard inputs will not work for gameplay controls, and you will only be able to use Controller. You can also manually switch to either pool in your Gameplay Options.
  • You can still use Mouse and Keyboard in either Pool to type messages into text chat and other editable fields.
  • When you switch to the Mouse and Keyboard Pool, you will be paired with all PC platforms and any console players who are using Mouse and Keyboard inputs and your internal MMR, skill ratings, and ranks for all game modes will be separate from your statistics in the Controller Pool.
  • When playing in the Mouse and Keyboard Pool, aim assist features are not available even when you are using a controller.
  • Controller players on PC platforms cannot enter the Controller Pool and cannot access aim assist features. To play on the Controller pool, you must play on a console platform.
  • Use of unauthorized peripherals to bypass the restrictions in the Controller Pool will be considered as cheating and will result in actions taken on your Battle.net account.

Real-Time Text Moderation

  • If another player types a message into Text Chat that is detected to be potentially disruptive, offensive, or harmful to other users, the message in its entirety will be hidden from other players.
  • You may choose to see that message and report it, if necessary, directly from the text chat feed.
  • You can disable this filter in the Text Chat section of the Social Options.
  • As always, using inappropriate chat or being disruptive to other players is against our In-Game Code of Conduct, regardless of the words used or the context implied.

First-Time User Experience

  • New players will now have access to every Hero in the game from the start!
  • The entry requirement to participate in Competitive matches has been lowered to 20 wins in Unranked matches.

Competitive Play Updates

Hero Skill Rating

Skill Rating (SR) has returned to Overwatch in a new form, allowing players to analyze their skill at individual heroes. We originally removed Skill Rating from Competitive Play because players perceived it as an absolute truth about skill, instead of the best-guess approximation it really is. For two Gold 5 players on a team together today, we think players feel accurately represented in how closely skilled they are. But for 2069 and 2068 players on a team together, we’ve made a subtle implication that one of these players is better. These players are extremely close in skill and it would be incorrect to assume with certainty that one is more skilled than the other, but players tended to see a higher number as objectively more skilled, and this led to some unfortunate social dynamics within matches because of the comparisons it caused.

Comparisons are great for Hero Skill Rating though! Since this information isn’t shared outside of your Career Profile, we think giving you our best guesses will help you to understand and analyze your own skill at your stable of heroes in the most fun way.

  • Hero Skill Rating is a number between 0 and 5000, with 5000 being equivalent to the top of Champion 1.
  • Hero Skill Rating is not used in Matchmaking in any way.
  • After Placements in Role or Open Queue, players will now be able to Place each of the 44 heroes in Season 18.
  • A hero needs to play 5 Placement matches to get their final Hero Skill Rating.
  • A hero must be played for at least 3 minutes within a match to qualify for Placement.
  • A hero must be one of your top 3 most played heroes within that match to qualify for Placement.
  • Hero Placements (and Hero Skill Rating) are not shared across Role and Open Queues.
  • Hero Skill Rating updates are shown at the end of the match on the Competitive Overview screen.
  • Only your top 3 most played heroes within that match will be displayed here, but every hero played in the match is updated behind the scenes based on the amount of time they were played within the match.
  • Your Hero Skill Ratings can be viewed in the Career Profile under the Hero Comparison dropdown at any time, and on each hero’s Statistics page.
  • A new tab has been added to the Competitive Info screen explaining many of the topics above.

Skill Rank Reset

  • With a huge wave of new Perks and tuning to existing Perks, this soft reset is designed to put players on an even playing field and give them a chance to climb even higher than ever before.
  • The highest Ranks (Master, Grandmaster, and Champion) have been tuned again to include a higher percentage of the player population once players are well calibrated.
  • All ranks in Role Queue and Open Queue in Competitive Play have been reset to Unranked, and all players will need to complete their respective 10 placement matches for each role.
  • Hero Skill Ratings have also been soft reset for the first time.

Competitive Rewards

  • Achieving Diamond or above in Role Queue or Open Queue will now unlock Freja’s Galactic skin.
  • Rewards are now based on your highest rank in a season instead of your final rank.
  • Top 500 rewards are an exception to the change above and require your final rank to be Top 500 at the end of the season.

Competitive Play New Player Requirements

  • The new player requirement to unlock Competitive Play has been lowered to 20 total matches won in Unranked modes.

Hero Updates

  • Armor still reduces incoming damage by 7, up to a maximum of 50% of the damage received.
  • Combined damage reduction and armor can no longer exceed 50% unless an ability increases it past that point, such as Ramattra’s Block or Hazard’s Block.
  • In cases where total damage reduction already exceeds 50% before armor is applied, armor will have no additional effect.

For the complete list of hero changes, check out Blizzard’s in-depth explanation.

Gears of War Reloaded Review – Emergence Day

One of Microsoft’s biggest Xbox-exclusive franchises has finally made its way to PlayStation. If you told me when the Xbox Series X|S era started that we’d be seeing Gears of War and other Xbox first-party games on the PS5, I would have called you crazy. But here we are, and the first Gears of War is now available on PS5.

Packed in a shiny new edition, Gears of War Reloaded is the first, in what is hopefully many, Gears of War games to land on PlayStation. But with the game having been released in 2006, can it still be relevant almost 20 years later?

It’s hard to argue for it, though those on PS5 might have more incentive to get it since this is an entirely new game for PlayStation gamers.

Lock and Reload

Gears of War holds a special place in my heart, as this is the game that made me want an Xbox 360. In 2006, a third-person cover shooter that offered this kind of visceral action was something new. Customization? Unlocking abilities and progression? Those weren’t things that were even part of your everyday action game.

It was a game that many felt was ahead of its time, and part of the reason the Xbox 360 was so successful; the franchise eventually spawned several sequels and spin-offs. Of course, the original game was released almost 20 years ago, and a lot has changed since then. However, one thing is certain: Gears of War has managed to stay relevant, with many of today’s third-person shooters tracing their roots back to the classic release.

There’s a compelling reason to re-release the original Gears of War, given its significant impact on gaming. With Microsoft’s push for multiplatform gaming when it comes to its first-party titles, it’s sensible to introduce the title to a new audience, especially if the company wants to release the in-development Gears of War game on other platforms (something which we’ve reported on previously).

Gears of War: Reloaded isn’t a remake, but a remaster, so don’t expect the game to feature new mechanics, features, or even an overhaul of the visuals. What’s been added to this is 4K resolution, 60 frames-per-second in the Campaign, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support, and more. Needless to say, if it wasn’t obvious enough, the improvements are mostly skin deep, which is something you’ll need to know beforehand before diving in, so expectations are set. It’s the definitive way to play the original release, with its online mode fully functional, including a full co-op campaign and, of course, the versus mode. The latter, we weren’t able to try much of it, given that this was a pre-release version and servers weren’t populated, but if you loved the competitive modes in the original, there’s no reason why you won’t love it in the remaster.

Complete Experience

PlayStation fans jumping in for the first time, don’t feel discouraged by some of the long-time veterans who may be stomping you in online. There’s a learning curve, but if you give it time, you’ll see just how fun and addictive the online can be. It’s brutal and bloody, but a whole lot of fun once you get used to it, and I’m glad that The Coalition, the new Gears of War developers, kept the multiplayer with this release.

Too often, we see remasters of old titles that fail to include their multiplayer components. So, thank you, The Coalition, for bringing this experience back for everyone to experience once again, or for the first time.

But enough about the competitive online mode, let’s dive into the campaign, the very thing that made me a fan of the Gears of War franchise.

I’ll be the first to admit that Gears of War, even in its remastered Reloaded edition, has not aged too well. I don’t mean when it comes to story or being politically incorrect or anything like that — just in general with the gameplay department, but that’s expected from something that came out in 2006. Mind you, it does seem like The Coalition did tweak some of the movement and controls to make it more “modern,” but it’s nothing drastic. It’s still the same Gears of War fans remember, just with prettier resolution and textures.

That’s not to say that it’s a bad thing, but if you’re a PlayStation gamer or someone entirely new to the franchise, you might feel it’s dated and wonder what the big fuss is about this franchise. I’m OK with that, and playing through this with someone entirely new to the franchise, they understood that fully going into this game.

“]

The core loop of the campaign is essentially to find a badass weapon to wield and encounter gruesome aliens, which you kill in some of the most brutal ways. That’s it, basically. It’s not that cut-and-dry, as there is gameplay variety in the form of massive boss fights and driving segments and whatnot, but overall, what you have and what your character can do from the start is the same until the end.

The set pieces, even if they aren’t as spectacular as they once were, are still some of the best we’ve seen in a third-person shooter such as this. That first encounter you have with a Berserker is still spine-chilling, as it hunts you down through a closed-quarter area, wreaking havoc through the building. Seeing the swarm of Krylls (insect-like creatures that fly in swarms) chasing you down through the darkness, as you try to find the next light source, so you aren’t eaten to a bloody pulp. It’s intense and a great way to show how the world of Sera (the home of humanity) is a dangerous one.

The story is simple: save humanity from a horrific alien threat known as the Locust Horde. There’s not a lot of depth to the plot or the characters, but the banter between the members of Delta Squad is what makes it so enjoyable. Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Cole, and Baird are a lovable and unforgettable crew. While they may not be the most nuanced characters, their personalities and interactions make you want to see them through to the end.

Looking at the character, you can begin to understand where the term “dudebro” was coined, as the game puts a heavy emphasis on exaggerations of masculinity, with over-the-top ultra-violence, and I’m here for all of that because it’s just dumb fun. Running around with a chainsaw gun, and sawing enemies into pieces, seeing all the blood spraying everywhere. It still makes me go, “oh shit” while smiling and laughing. This is a game that knew what it wanted to be, and executed it perfectly.

My favorite thing about it is the fact that you can play the entire thing in co-op. This isn’t just adding another player type of thing, either, where they don’t fit into the lore at all. You get to play as one of Marcus’ squadmates, with the game even splitting players up during certain sections of the game. To this day, I still think that’s one of the coolest ways to implement co-op, where it’s not just a feature that exists, but one that is actually integral to the game’s story, making it feel like there are two main characters rather than one.

Gameplay components are split, such as the vehicle, where one player drives, while the other controls the light to fend off the Krylls. When the players split off from one another, it’s often so one can go off and flank the enemy from a different side, or open a gate, and help each other progress through a level. Co-op shooters are a rare sight nowadays, especially in third-person cover shooters. Even in 2025, it feels refreshing to play through something like this with a friend.

A Remaster Worth Playing

For a new generation of players, Gears of War: Reloaded is a fantastic introduction to one of the most important franchises in modern gaming. It’s a chance to see where the core mechanics of countless third-person shooters originated from, and to be able to witness just how revolutionary this game was. At the same time, some aspects may feel dated—like the somewhat clunky movement and limited gameplay variety—the game’s brutal action, memorable set pieces, and engaging co-op campaign make it a worthwhile experience.

The fact that the core gameplay loop is still fun almost two decades later is a testament to the original’s brilliant design. For veteran players, it’s a nostalgic trip back to a simpler time, now with a smooth frame rate and a higher resolution, with a more lively multiplayer.

While the campaign is on the short side (around 5-6 hours if you rush it), it’s also priced at a modest $40. It’s a classic that has stood the test of time, and with more Gears of War games on the way, newcomers to the series now have a great way to get started with the franchise, which should prep them up nicely for Gears of War: E-Day when it releases (hopefully) next year.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros

  • Action-packed from beginning to the end
  • No loading times!
  • Story, characters and theme still have that appeal
  • Value for money with the campaign and full multiplayer

Cons

  • Graphics and even mechanics feel dated compared to today’s modern third-person shooters
  • There are no skill trees, unlockables or anything of that sort
  • On the short side, as in you can beat this in one day for sure

  • Fixed an issue when the Shower would appear visually broken (water leaking) despite being fixed either by completing the mini-game or hitting it with the wrench.
  • Fixed an issue in Freezer Duty where Frost Anomalies’ visual effect remained visible after dispersing them by using two different elemental projectiles from the Crank-Operated Fluid Ejector (meaning hitting them with both regular water and boiling hot water from the Teapot augment).
  • Fixed areas in Ground Control where players were able to see outside of the level through a wall in Zone 2.
  • Fixed areas in Freezer Duty where the players were able to see outside of the level in Zone 2.

  • Fixed an issue with Lost Assets where some of them were impossible for players to pick up.
  • Fixed an issue where the Electro-Kinetic Charge Impactor dealt the same damage regardless of the charge level.
  • Fixed an issue where the Electro-Kinetic Charge Impactor didn’t show the charging animation when players are charging the push ability.
  • Fixed an issue where the Crank-Operated Fluid Ejector in some cases loses its sound effect and controller vibration.
  • (wait for it…) Fixed an issue in Paper Chase where Sticky Ricky’s health bar appears yellow (normal) in the invincible state.
  • Also changed the default color from yellow to red.
  • Fixed an issue in Paper Chase where shooting the Sticky Notes with the Burning Rounds perk made them wet (that’s not how fire works, even in the Oldest House).
  • Fixed an issue in Frequency Shift where the objectives might not advance when players are performing manual fixes on the cables at the same time.

Remedy also confirmed that the second major update is due for release end of September, and this will bring what the studio calls “positive changes” to the game xperience.

Those on PS5, the login issues, which are affecting “a small percentage” of players are also being worked on, and will be released in September too.

Gears of War: Reloaded Day One Update 1.004.001 Slots in Stability Improvements and Bug Fixes

While Xbox Series X|S gamers got Helldivers 2 from Sony today, Microsoft is returning the favor with Gears of War: Reloaded, which is out now on consoles and PC.

Same as with almost every game with an online component these days, there is a day one update to download, and this brings stability improvements and bug fixes.

Those who bought the game via disc, you’ll need to update the game client to Gears of War: Reloaded update version 1.004.001, while those who bought the game digitally should have already download the file alongside the base game.

Gears of War: Reloaded Day One Update Is Available for Download and Brings It to Version 1.004.001

According to The Coalition, the day one update delivers “crucial stability and bug fixes to ensure a smoother gameplay experience.” This also fixes a low frame rate issue when using the DualSense controller on PC.

  • Technical bugs have also been addressed such as on-screen text errors, input responsiveness, and more.
  • Multiple crash fixes and incremental performance enhancements across PC and console platforms
  • Resolved numerous gameplay, UI, and localization bugs – from controller input quirks to incorrect in-game text – for a smoother experience.
  • Minor feature tweaks like improved handheld device support switching (mouse & keyboard mode) and refined settings behavior enhance overall usability.
  • Consoles: The game now properly handles cases where in-game global power saving  is disabled but certain modes (campaign/versus) tried to use power-save features.
  • Consoles: Fix for fire texture and animation isn’t shown properly in Campaign.
  • PC: Fixed a persistent low-frame-rate issue when connecting a DualSense® controller to a PC.
Handheld: Fixed mouse input issues on certain handheld PCs – the mouse sensitivity on handheld devices has been corrected to respond consistently.

In addition to that, The Coalition also revealed a host of launch improvements based on feedback from the Gears of War: Reloaded closed beta.

Cross-platform improvements

  • You can now clearly see what platform other players are on via platform icon.
  • Linked accounts are easier to spot, so you’ll know who you can add as cross-platform friends.
  • Easier to invite players to your squad/game no matter what platform they’re on.

Gnasher Improvements

  • Tighter spread, improved damage and hit registration
  • Active Reload damage is now fixed (instead of variable) across all weapons.

Matchmaking improvements

  • More dedicated servers & scaled up online services
  • Cross-platform “Squads” Matchmaking Improvements

PC Improvements

  • Added 240 fps framerate settings option
  • Added Push-to-talk voice-chat support
  • Improved Ultrawide monitor support
  • Increased Mouse Sensitivity Control
  • Optimizations for improved gameplay smoothness

Will we see Gears of War: E-Day released on PS5 simultaneously as the Xbox and PC versions? Given Microsoft’s new multiplatform strategy, I wouldn’t be surprised if it did. Our recent report confirmed the game is in development for the PS5 alongside State of Decay 3.

Helldivers 2 New Update Brings Halo Content via Patch 1.003.302

When it comes to today’s update, Arrowhead doesn’t have your typical bulletpoint-filled patch notes, but rather, a welcome salutation to Xbox players worldwide.

The studio made a public service announcement (PSA), stating:

Attention, Helldivers!

The pods are primed. Coordinates locked.

In moments, you will drop into the Galactic War’s most brutal warzones — and that’s exactly where you belong. Shoulder to shoulder with your brothers and sisters from every corner of the Galaxy, fighting as one.

We stand united in our love of Super Earth, guided by the steady hand of Managed Democracy. Like the legendary Helljumpers of another Great War, we go feet first into hell — because that’s where the fight is fiercest. There will be no rescue. No retreat. Only you, Helldivers, together against the enemy.

You are the first boots to hit the ground, the last to leave it.

And when the Galaxy sees those four blazing streaks cut through the sky, they know: Liberty has arrived, and it will not be denied.

Now suit up. Lock in. Remember your extensive training. And see you planetside!

With love from all of us at Arrowhead,

Happy Xbox launch day iO

The Division 2 Down for Maintenance on Aug. 26 and It Will Take Longer Than Usual

Heads up, agents! Ubisoft has taken The Division 2 servers down this Aug. 26, and this will take longer than your usual maintenance downtime.

For the schedule and what to expect regarding today’s server outage, read on.

The Division 2 Servers Down on Aug. 26 and It’s More Than Just Three Hours

The Division 2 Down July 15

According to Ubisoft, today’s maintenance downtime is approximately 4.5 hours and starts now! This is much longer than the three-hour maintenance server outages we usually see.

While we expect a server-side update to be applied (and not a client download), please note that there will be no gameplay-related changes, as Ubisoft stated today’s update “includes backend infrastructure improvements that won’t be visible to players.”

Also of note, compared to past maintenance downtimes, there is no prior announcement, so some players might be caught off-guard.

In other The Division 2 news, the Survivors content has been announced, though it seems we won’t be seeing it for quite some time.

The good news is, outside of that survival mode, Massive Entertainment has promised more support, as the Year 7 roadmap has been revealed.

If anything changes regarding today’s The Division 2 server downtime, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Battlefield 6 Weapon Camos Surface and There’s Nothing Shiny or Ridiculous

DICE has already commented that soldier skins in Battlefield 6 will be “grounded” and stay authentic to the franchise, and based on our early look at the soldier skins in the game, the studio has stayed true to its word.

However, it seems this also applies to soldier skins as well, based on the weapon camos unearthed on the latest build of Battlefield 6 in BF Labs.

Similar to any other datamined information, we must include a disclaimer stating that this is unofficial content, and as such, there is a chance it could be altered or removed from the final version of the game entirely. That said, most of what’s spotted is usually spot-on so far.

Battlefield 6 Weapon Camos Unearthed and They Fit With the Game’s Aesthetic

The unearthed camos come from the latest build of Battlefield 6 in Battlefield Labs, and for the most part, there’s nothing neon or anything too loud that might give the impression that your soldier is carrying a watergun instead of an actual lethal weapon. Check out the images unearthed below (via BattlefieldNet, Battlefield Wire), which is  :

Curious how they look on weapons? Wonder no more, as we have pics of those too.

While what was unearthed seemed OK, don’t forget, there’s nothing stopping DICE from adding more weapon skins that break immersion in the future. Personally, I am fine with weapon skins looking a bit more casual, but nothing too gaudy.

Will DICE Add Gold Camos to Battlefield 6?

While DICE hasn’t said anything about gold camos/golden weapons in Battlefield 6, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it appear in the game as some sort of high-level progression for a weapon. Now, before anyone cries about it copying Call of Duty, it’s worth noting that gold weapon skins have been introduced in the franchise as early as Battlefield Hardline, and was also something players can earn in Battlefield V.

What made this interesting in BFV was how you had to earn each part of a gun’s gold part, and each part had a unique challenge attached to it, which made obtaining it extra hard, and in turn, more special.

If you want more Battlefield 6 content to chew on, check out an overview of the gadgets, throwables, and other info about the game, which was also unearthed via Battlefield Labs.

Let’s hope DICE continues with this more grounded look for cosmetics. If they do, I wouldn’t say no to spending some money on the premium Battle Pass as a sign of support.

Are you OK with the weapon camos unearthed so far? Do you want something a lot more colorful? Maybe something more muted? Leave a comment and let us know your thoughts.

Battlefield 6 will be released on Oct. 10 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Ubisoft Allocated Only 5 Devs to “Restart” The Division 2, Goal Was to Build Something “Bigger and Lasting”

Say what you will about Ubisoft, but the company does not give up on its games. While The Division 2 failed to reach the same heights as its predecessor when it launched in March 2019, that didn’t stop Massive Entertainment from constantly pushing updates and content to lure the player base back in, and entice new players to join the fight.

After releasing DLC (Warlords of New York) a year after release, most assumed the looter shooter’s post-release support was finished, especially since Ubisoft publicly said that the game was a commercial failure.

Apparently, someone at Massive forgot the memo, as the studio continued to develop seasonal content, culminating in the release of a new premium expansion titled Battle for Brooklyn, which was released this year.

The Division 2’s “Restart” Was Started by Only a Handful of Developers

While The Division 2’s comeback is commendable, did you know that Ubisoft only allocated a crew of five people to revive the game? This was revealed by Massive Entertainment developer Palle Hoffstein, who also commented on the game’s future.

Hoffstein mentioned that he was part of the revival of not only The Division 2, but also Rainbow Six Siege. Hoffstein, who developed art for The Division franchise, said, “I’ve been part of two big turnarounds with Rainbow Six Siege and The Division 2. Amazing to be part of both. But we had 5 people to restart Division 2. Five! What were we thinking? Ah that was fun.”

Talking about The Division 2’s new Year 7 roadmap, Hoffstein shared he didn’t want to resurrect the game only to see it sunset again, and that they’re building something that’ll last.

“When a few of us made a small team to resurrect TD2 I had zero interest in adding a year or two, just to sunset the game again. The goal, what we believed we could do, was to build something bigger and lasting. This is fun to see but there’s still so much more we want to do,” the developer noted. Adding to that, he said, “Launching a game is hard and I had the chance to help a couple other games do that. But this seemed even harder to do and with less of a roadmap as to how to even do it. In other words interesting. I have a hard time turning down interesting.”

This implies Massive has a lot of content planned for The Division 2, of which we have no doubt, given that the “Survivors” content for the game has just been announced. Based on what was shared, we won’t be getting it anytime soon.

I admit, I was one of the many people who assumed Ubisoft had given up on The Division 2, especially since Ubisoft announced that The Division 3 was in development in 2023. My initial reaction was they would leave The Division 2 with occasional apparel events and nothing more. Imagine, to my surprise, that an entire year’s worth of content is planned.

This isn’t the first time Ubisoft did this, either, as titles such as Rainbow Six Siege, For Honor all failed to sizzle at launch, but thanks to the company’s non-stop tweaking and updates, they are now in a stable place. It goes to show that with a lot of hard work, even if you don’t nail it out of the gate, you can still thrive in the long run.

What Hoffstein has shared is good news, but it also means we probably won’t be getting The Division 3 anytime soon. If I had to hazard a guess, we’ll hear more about it next year, with a release planned for 2027. Once we know more about that, you’ll hear about it here on MP1st.
