Gran Turismo 7 Description Says That Players Can Sell Cars Even If the Game Doesn’t Let You

Some shrewd-eyed users on Reddit have spotted that you can apparently sell cars according to a Gran Turismo 7 description, even if the game doesn’t let you. This comes at the heels of the game’s current controversies, with so many issues not beginning to pile up (from race rewards being reduced, to server outages affecting the campaign) that even the boss of the studio has since offered apologies.

This newest report comes from a Reddit thread on the official Gran Turismo sub, where user CMDR_Rrah screenshotted a description of Gran Turismo 7 that apparently borders on false advertising. While the description for the game on the official store page says that you can “sell your way” through a solo campaign, you can’t actually sell any cars in the game.

A quick cursory glance over on the official store page for the game still reads as such based on a screenshot we took :

Experience the complete Real Driving simulator… 25 years in the making.

Get behind the wheel of over 400 cars from day one – with each classic motor and bleeding-edge supercar recreated with unparalleled detail – and navigate over 90 track routes in dynamic weather conditions.

With the reintroduction of the legendary GT Simulation Mode, you can buy, tune, race and sell your way through a solo campaign as you unlock new cars and challenges.

And if you love going head-to-head with others, hone your skills and compete in GT Sport Mode.*

This has got the users on the Reddit thread quite riled up, with one user even mentioning that there’s a trophy for the game that requires a player to buy 10 of the same car. After doing so, however, they found out that they cannot sell those duplicates, and now they have nine that they can’t even make use of.

If this is an oversight, it’s a very weird and quirky one, as allowing players to sell dupes of items – or in this case, cars – has always been a staple of almost every game that utilizes an inventory management system. A few days ago, the studio came under fire as the latest update for GT7 reduced the payout on some of the game’s more lucrative races, with many leading to believe that it may have to do with the fact that the system is trying to push players into paying for credits via microtransactions.

Whatever the case may be, it would appear that Gran Turismo 7’s issues keep surfacing one after the other, and here’s hoping that Polyphony addresses the criticisms soon.

Despite these issues, you can check out our review of Gran Turismo 7 here, where James wrote, “Gran Turismo 7 represents a true return to form for Polyphony Digital. Despite being the seventh mainline iteration, the team is still able to keep the series feeling fresh with its new coat of paint and innovative technology with its new weather system (and even a new AI tech called “Sophy”). For Gran Turismo players out there thinking this might be a half step measure, it’s not; it’s a full blown experience and so much more. It’s an essential must-play for any fan out there and it just might be my favorite Gran Turismo thus far.”

Thanks, CMDR_RRah!

Ghostwire: Tokyo Review – Spirits Within (PS5)

It’s finally time to unravel the mystery behind Tango Gameworks latest, Ghostwire: Tokyo. Is this a worthy game by Tango that we didn’t see The Evil Within 3? The short answer: yes! Read on our Ghostwire Tokyo review to see why this is one evil you’ll want to tangle with.

An Evil Within the City

If you’ve been following Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo over the years, then chances are, you probably still don’t know much about this game. It’s odd, I know, but I have to say it does feel a bit refreshing having to go into a game almost completely blind. This is perhaps one of the reasons why Tango Gameworks has been so reluctant to show it, as much of the game’s own plot is shrouded in a veil of shadow, leaving the task of uncovering it to the players themselves. It’s a mystery, and one that managed to get me invested from the very start.

In Ghostwire: Tokyo, this mystery is centered around a catastrophic event that nearly wipes out the population of Tokyo. A mysterious fog has swept the streets, claiming the soul of everyone caught in it. What was once a bustling city filled with the traffic of people living their daily lives, has suddenly become a ghost town. That is both metaphorical and literal as the city is flooded with nightmarish Yokais, eating up the trapped souls, and brutally murdering any remaining survivors.

It is here where we meet our protagonist, Akito, who finds himself on the brink of death, knocked out from all the panic and chaos that the fog had brought. Fortunately for him, a former spirit detective who goes simply by the name of KK is now a spirit, seeking a suitable dead body to possess. Unfortunately for KK, Akito isn’t as dead as he thought he was, leading to a battle over control between the two. However, their goals soon align as they are met by the game’s antagonist, Hannya, a mysterious mask wearer who possesses an incredible immense amount of supernatural powers.

Seeking a suitable vessel for his plans, Hannya and Akito’s fates soon cross as Hannya learns of Akito’s sister, who is currently alive, though in a comatose state. Things quickly get personal, with both Akito and KK agreeing that it would be best if they worked together. What unravels next is a tale filled with trust, betrayal, remorse, and death.

Contrary to Tango Gameworks previous work on The Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo takes a backseat on horror and instead presents gamers with a story that invokes reflecting on subjects of life and death. It’s a big change up, though in the narrative of it all, one that feels well crafted as the city itself booms with those reoccurring themes. Humans may have given the city of Tokyo a personality, but in their absence, a new one has arisen, completely driven by what is left — a city that flourishes in death and takes on a character of its own, and perhaps in the most terrifying of ways.

Ghostwire Tokyo Review screen 1

While the campaign of Ghostwire: Tokyo was an enjoyable experience to go through, without a question it’s the city itself and the captivating world that Tango Gameworks have managed to create that’s the star. There is an eeriness that creeps around every street walked, every corner turned, and every room explored that has a sense that there is something always watching. You know this feeling, the feeling you get when you decide to go out during the midnight hours, the dead silence that haunts the air. You’ve been down this road a thousand times during the day, yet something about it feels off this time. Paranoia sets in, despite there actually not being anything there.

There is no shock value in the way Ghostwire: Tokyo addresses its horror. No gruesome, gory, gash-filled monsters (well, there are Yokais but they aren’t scary) with hundreds of appendixes that are squirming around to provoke terror. No, this is a world that feels believable, a world that projects on a physiological level, leaving the scary parts entirely up to the player to interpret.

I loved it, even if the Yokais themselves weren’t scary due to how action orientated the gameplay is, there is something about this interpretation of Tokyo that makes me stop in my tracks as shadowy figures run across the screen, or strange gurgling sounds fill an alleyway. The mystery of not knowing what’s there. It is both beautiful, and terrifying at the same time.

Of course there is more to the world of Ghostwire that doesn’t rely on phycological thrills. While humans are gone, their spirits still are very present. This leads back to the idea of life and death, oftentimes when confronting these spirits, be it collecting them to help restore them back, or taking on the various side missions throughout Tokyo, each one has a story to tell, mostly dealing in their unfinished business. Some of them will ask you to retrieve items, while others to deal with an evil spirit of some sort. In essence, they all revolve around how people handle death. Some are peaceful in their presence, while others manifest and transform locations, trapping other spirits in their selfishness. Ultimately it’s your job to help them move on to whatever is next.

I found the side missions to be one of the more enjoyable aspects of Ghostwire, as they all felt uniquely designed to tell a different story. Some were as simple as reuniting a mother and child, while others more complex, such as freeing spirits. One mission in particular saw me face off against a hoarder. The building they were living in was filled to the brim with things they’ve collected, and it affected other residents in the area. It wasn’t a pretty sight, and the specter we were tasked with cleansing even altered the area to further alleviate their own behavior. It was neat, seeing both the real world and the supernatural blend together. Lots of moments like these are scattered throughout the entire game, making it well worthwhile to explore and do side content as you progress through the main mission.

It almost reminded me a bit of the Yakuza series. The main story is filled with emotional drama and twists that drive you to keep going, yet the side content deals with the lives of others, be that in a serious or wacky manner. Regardless, I believe there is a lot to reflect on the story and side mission, and I’m sure most of you will come to enjoy the journey it offers.

Getting Spiritual

So I’ve established that the world of Ghostwire: Tokyo, despite how beautiful, is a rather nightmarish one. Being that Akito is a human, he doesn’t have much of a fighting chance, or at least he wouldn’t have weren’t for his spirit companion KK.

KK’s backstory is a bit of a mystery, but all that matters is we know that he’s a detective that dabbles in the realm of the supernatural. Because of this, he has developed a range of abilities that have followed him into the afterlife, and therefore has given Akito a number of those powers in his possession to fend for himself.

Known as Ethereal Weaving, Akito has the ability to conjure up powerful elemental attacks out of thin air. These elemental abilities include water, fire, and wind, as well as expand in the use of Talisman which have a variety of effects such as shock traps, explosives, decoy, and more.

All of these run off an ammo system, and with the exception of Talismans, can be replenished by simply defeating an enemy or destroying one of the many destructible objects in the environments. Because of this, you are somewhat forced to play conservatively when facing off against enemies as the strongest abilities can’t endlessly be spammed. This creates somewhat of a strategy to how combat is approached as you’ll find some enemies weaker to specific types of elements.

Furthermore, if you aren’t the kind of player who likes the direct approach, there are alternatives such as going stealth. Now, I don’t believe you can beat the game like this (though prove me wrong if you can,) but it is nice having the option to sneak up behind a Yokai and perform stealth takedowns. In fact, I’ve used that form of style plenty of times throughout my playthrough, as not only did it help in keeping me alive longer, but as well as help replenish ammo for when I did need to go all out.

All in all, I enjoyed the combat of Ghostwire: Tokyo as it felt fun with a dash of style to it. The PS5’s Dualsense controller certainly feels great during combat as the haptics will vary in responses, and the triggers will feel differently depending on what abilities you use. Sadly though, in terms of each elemental power available, they are rather light in how much they can do. Once you’ve gotten a power, you will have essentially seen all they can do, that being their basic shot attack and charge ability. Sure, you can enhance these in the skill menu, but those are specific to increase ammo, faster firing rate, or higher damage, something that is also done with the beads you can equip.

That’s not to say that the combat wasn’t fun, because seeing all the crazy effects certainly is. I just wish there was more to these powers than what there currently is, though I suppose a potential sequel could improve on that.

There are also touchpad controls that are used to break seals. You could use the joystick, but either way I don’t think it felt all that responsive and came off annoying more than anything.

However, if there is one aspect of Ghostwire: Tokyo that I absolutely hated, then it’s the way one specific side activity is handled. Early on, you learn about transferring absorbing spirits, and transferring them into payphones. These spirits are scattered across the maps in all forms of verticality, and serve as a way to help you level up.

Think of them as coins, or orbs that are just on the map for the sake of giving players a reason to keep on playing. Typically I would be fine if just simply passing through them would collect them, but every single one — and there are hundreds — you have to stop and watch an absorption animation play out. It’s exhausting truthfully, and in my attempt to try and 100% the game, it was just utterly boring. It doesn’t help that you are limited in the amount of spirits that you can carry, forcing you to leave a spot and visit a pay phone and then go back. Unnecessary back and forth, though that is eliminated once you beat the game and get an item that transfers souls immediately after absorption rather than having to use a pay phone.

The rest of the side stuff and collectibles work, but those spirit ones just feel more of a hindrance than adding any actual value. Sure, they help you level up, but by the time you start going through this process, leveling would essentially be pointless. I would say if there wasn’t as many scattered around the map, then maybe I wouldn’t be bothered by them. It’s not a complaint that there is too much of this type of content, it’s a complaint of how it feels like it adds no true value; not like the side quests or relic collectibles that have lore drops. It’s uninteresting and clear padding to the game’s clock.

Then there’s the combat with the bow. Given that Ghostwire: Tokyo is essentially a first -person shooter, it’s odd to see that the only weapon in the game is so underutilized. There’s a section in the game where right after you get the bow you use it to clear up some corruption from a distance, but after that you never really use it again in terms of puzzles. That is especially true when most objects can be hit with the wind power.

Even during combat the bow is lackluster as aiming felt unwieldy. The enemies don’t move fast at all, yet somehow I found myself missing shots because they glided past the shot. It’s a last minute resort for sure, and thankfully you don’t get put up with it a whole lot as it was mainly used during small set pieces in the campaign. Still, I would have loved to see the bow better utilized. Upgrading it does help, but by the time you get to that point it feels a bit redundant.

The PS5 Advantage, and More

I already briefly discussed how the DualSense is used, but I wanted to shift my focus on one of the other areas that PlayStation has been hyping up. No, I’m not referring to the super quick speeds of the SSD, I’m talking about the 3D Tempest audio engine baked right into the console. One game specifically comes to mind of taking advantage of the engine, that being Returnal, but in the case of Ghostwire: Tokyo, I am absolutely astonished by the impressive implementation of sounds. Playing with a headset is a must, especially for those who own a PlayStation Pulse 3D headset.

Hearing animals in the background, footsteps, and ominous voices echoing down a corridor. It’s immersive, and adds a whole layer of spookiness to Ghostwire: Tokyo. This is especially more prominent during stealth moments as you can hear a Yokai expressing themselves in a wide range of emotions. Some are laughing, almost child-like, while others can be heard crying in pain. A big highlight especially is when all the street lights begin turning off, with a sweep of fog covering the street and a band of Yokai marching down it. You can hear the strikes of drums and other instruments play out, though if you listen closely you can almost feel the malicious intent these monsters bring with them. The sound work in Ghostwire: Tokyo is utterly fantastic, truly something you need to experience yourself.

Of course there is the incredible speeds of the SSD that the PS5 offers, though I will warn, expect to see loading screens, especially when transitioning from the exterior of a building to the interior. Thankfully, they’re very short, as is the time to respawn from a death. There may be loading screens, but you won’t be spending any more than a few seconds staring at them.

Now more on the technical side of things, Ghostwire: Tokyo is a bit interesting on how it approaches options. We’ve outlined it in our previous post, but to discuss a bit more again, Ghostwire: Tokyo features six graphical and performance modes on the PS5. These modes can essentially be broken into two groups, performance and quality, three for each one.

For quality, players can expect all the bells and whistles that graphics bring as the resolution is aimed at 4K, with Ray-tracing and other graphical enhancements, while running at a capped 30fps. The additional two modes remove that cap entirely, with the third adding V-Sync.

It’s the same story on the performance side, though as the name suggests, these modes are aimed at gamers who prefer steady performance, therefore removing ray-tracing and some other graphical improvements in favor of 60fps. The other modes also remove the cap, enabling frame rates higher than 60 with V-sync as one of the options.

Having played around with all the modes, I can tell you that for the most part, you’ll probably enjoy either using the base quality and performance, or the uncapped quality with V-sync. These modes seem to have offered the smoothest of experiences, with the uncapped quality with V-sync striking a balance between the two modes. Performance for the most part feels like it hits 60fps, but there are certain situations where we do see dips, even in quality. There is a specific enemy that has a charge attack that for whatever reason if you are near it, will tank the frame rate. Hopefully that gets addressed come release, or shortly after.

Quality mode, though I’m not a big fan of capped 30fps, does look stunning. Ray-trace reflections are in full force in this mode as the streets are littered with puddles, as well as the environment being rich in reflective material. It’s gorgeous to say the least.

The uncapped modes without V-sync are, well, unplayable – at least in the TV/monitor set up I had. It also doesn’t help that the PS5 doesn’t support VRR but I’ll get to that in a moment. The issue I had with these modes was that they were filled with nothing but screen tearing. The slightest movement would cause splits in the screen, which made me question why even include it. In fact why include the additional uncap frame-rate modes if they aren’t entirely ideal to play on. For PC gamers that’s not so much of an issue due to their open-ness, but for us console gamers we are bound to the closed platform consoles are. So again, why include these modes? Well, the answer to that lies in Tango Gameworks previous title, The Evil Within.

While not the most stellar of sequels, The Evil Within 2, a game initially built for last-gen consoles also featured an uncapped frame-rate option. Now like Ghostwire: Tokyo, playing with this mode wasn’t exactly the most ideal way. However, what this did was future-proof the title for newer hardware. This meant that Tango Gameworks didn’t need to go back and patch the game in order to support the newer consoles, those being the PS5 and Xbox Series. It’s the same idea here. Down the road when the PS5 does get VRR support, the game will already be able to take advantage of that feature. Of course, when the PlayStation 6 releases, Ghostwire: Tokyo will already be ready to take advantage of the power boost supplied from that console. No need for gamers to wait for a patch of some sort. It’s brilliant honestly, even if the experience isn’t quite ready for today.

Verdict

Tango Gameworks manages to embalm it’s player in a beautiful and enticing world that is known as Ghostwire: Tokyo. There is a sense of the unknown that shrouds this new, and interesting universe, and while I may have some issues, ultimately I believe the studio has laid out a solid foundation, for what is hopefully a start to a beautiful franchise.

The story will get you hooked, but the world itself will have you staying, searching for answers to those questions you dare not ask.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • Tango Gameworks crafts a gorgeous world that takes on its own personality. Tokyo feels alive with a creepiness that you can’t shake off.
  • Combat is fun, and stylish. Never felt bored by it, and higher difficulty allowed us to challenge ourselves.
  • Side quests feel unique and are fun to take on. Never felt like I was repeating the same mission.
  • Main story was fun, though we do wish it was a bit longer and dived into the characters more.
  • Future-proof for consoles beyond the PS5.

Cons:

  • Touchpad controls is a bit hit and miss, unresponsive at times.
  • In world collectibles (specifically the spirits) can feel exhausting due to the quantity.
  • Bow combat feels like a bit of a afterthought, which is a bummer because it’s the only weapon in the game.
  • Light performance hitches on the base modes.

Fortnite Update 3.49 Out for Chapter 3 Season 2, Datamined Content Listed for March 20

Epic Games has released the Fortnite update 3.49 patch today, and this one is for the major Chapter 3 Season 2! Check out what’s new in the Fortnite March 20 update patch notes below.

Fortnite Update 3.49 Patch Notes | Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 Patch Notes | Fortnite March 20 Update Patch Notes:

Update: Epic Games has released the full patch notes:

Introducing Chapter 3 Season 2: Resistance

Overshield

Fortnite Update 3.49

Building has been wiped out! To help maintain cover, you now have an Overshield on top of your Shield and Health. The Overshield is your first line of defense: before your Shield and Health take a hit, it’s your Overshield that’ll crack. Your Overshield will still recover if it goes all the way down to 0.

Movement Upgrades

The battle has changed, with new ways to bring the fight:

Sprinting

Run at the new, faster default movement speed. A faster default movement speed means a faster sprint too! This sprint is so fast that it’ll mean pocketing whatever you’re holding. Of course, sprinting super fast can’t be maintained forever, so a new sprint meter will tell you how much longer you can move at that pace.

Mantling

Gaining the high ground has always been key to winning a battle. And fortunately, where your feet fail, your hands will now help you out. If a surface is just a little too high for your jump — or a platform just a little too far for your landing — your hands can come into play and pull you up!

Shoulder Bashing

Speaking of sprinting, sprint at doors to bash them open with your shoulder. It’s probably not very polite, but at least you look cool doing it.

(You can also slide into doors to open them now!)

Bars to Turn the Tide

Bar funding returns! As the Season progresses, you’ll have new opportunities to help direct the Resistance. Chip in Bars towards pro-Resistance devices, as well as use Bars to vote for which items to unvault.

Turret Determination

Fortnite Update 3.49

A different kind of vote is live right now. Instead of an item unvault vote, it’s a Turret device vote! Different pro-Resistance sites need help deciding whether to install a Light Turret or a Heavy Turret. With the former, get the classic Mounted Turret experience. With the slower but beefier latter, do heavy damage to vehicles. The first site that needs help is Sanctuary!

Armored Battle Bus

Fortnite Update 3.49

There’s another way you can contribute with Bars right away: funding the Armored Battle Bus. 🚍

The Armored Battle Bus is a Battle Bus that’s… ready for battle. This intimidating metallic machine has just about all the fixins: Chonkers tires, a Cow Catcher for extra ramming power, and a Light and Heavy Turret.

It’s not all business with this vehicle, though. If you turn the radio on, it immediately becomes a party bus! Once 100% Funded, find an Armored Battle Bus in Resistance-occupied POIs.

Resistance Equipment

You currently have a wide slate of weapons to work with. Here’s what’s at your disposal!

New Weapons

Combat SMG

Fortnite Update 3.49

Like the Combat Assault Rifle and Combat Pistol, the Combat SMG packs a heavy punch. Tame its recoil to get the most out of its exceptional power.

Striker Burst Rifle

Fortnite Update 3.49

The Striker Burst Rifle is a burst-rifle with a customized sight. Strike with this two-shot semi automatic weapon as you aim with the scope!

Unvaulted Weapons

  • Thermal Scoped Assault Rifle (Adjusted – semi-auto, fires faster, reduced damage, increased recoil)
  • Drum Shotgun (Adjusted – fires slower, slightly increased damage, tighter spread, better falloff)
  • Revolver (Adjusted – fires faster, reduced damage, higher accuracy)
  • Remote Explosives (Adjusted – increased damage against vehicles)
  • Thermal Scoped Revolver (Exotic weapon)
  • Storm Scout Sniper Rifle (Exotic weapon)
  • Though not a weapon per se, Shockwave Grenades!

The Chapter 3 Season 1 Returners

  • Ranger Assault Rifle
  • Striker Pump Shotgun
  • Auto Shotgun
  • Sidearm Pistol
  • Stinger SMG
  • Hunter Bolt-Action Sniper
  • Shadow Tracker (Exotic weapon)
  • Marksman Six Shooter (Exotic weapon)
  • The Dub (Exotic weapon)
  • Boom Sniper Rifle (Exotic weapon)

Land and Sky

POI Possession

Fortnite IO POI

The Resistance and IO are locked in head-to-head disputes to claim the Island’s POIs. You can tell if a POI is occupied by the IO if you see an IO Blimp overhead, Titans, IO guards, and Siege Cannons, while a POI occupied by the Resistance may feature an Armored Battle Bus, Sentry guards, and Turrets.

IO Blimps

Fortnite IO Blimp

The IO having a bird’s-eye view of the Island may seem intimidating, but you can still access their blimps from the ground. IO Blimps are attached to the ground via Ziplines, so zip up to an IO Blimp and claim its loot for yourself! How do you get back down? Either use a Zipline, use the draft of a fan to begin gliding, or launch yourself with a Siege Cannon.

IO Machinery

Use the IO’s artillery against them:

IO Titan Tanks

What’s one way to barrel through obstacles? An IO Titan Tank! But a Titan’s good for more than just strong-arming. Fire the Titan’s cannon while you drive, and if you wanna be even more formidable, have a teammate control its machine gun turret.

IO Titan Tanks have a massive amount of Health, but their treads can be destroyed if they take enough damage. If this happens, fix ‘em up by hand or with a Repair Torch! The Titan’s a tough battle-tested machine, so what to do if you’re up against one? Deal enough damage to the engine (located at the rear) to temporarily overheat its systems. This is a prime opportunity to take on the treads!

Siege Cannons

Fortnite Siege Cannon

Need to get somewhere fast but the path’s too perilous on foot? Get in the seat of a Siege Cannon and launch yourself far forward. (Or launch your teammates first, then yourself.) Mid-air, you’ll be given the option to deploy your Glider, but you won’t take fall damage if you don’t deploy it.

You can still have fun with a cannon even if you don’t have travel plans. In addition to using them as a transportation device, keep your opponents at bay by firing projectiles!

Have a Cow Catcher

Fortnite Cow Catcher

Chonkers Off-Road Tires have been used to make cars offroad since Chapter 2 Season 6, but this fight against the IO calls for more modification. Available now, throw a Cow Catcher on your Joyride vehicle to boost its ramming power! (Blockades and other vehicles beware.) Throw a Cow Catcher and Chonkers on the same vehicle for the ultimate expedition.

The Repair Torch: A Healing Item for Your Vehicles!

Fortnite Repair Torch

Whether your Mudflap’s been subject to explosives, your Motorboat’s been running too long on land, or your Titan’s been targeted at the treads, fix it up with a Repair Torch! Repair Torches restore the Health of vehicles, and if they run out of fuel to ignite? Fill ‘em back up at a gas pump!

Square Enix Needs to Stop Making Live Service Games

To put it nicely, Square Enix has had to learn about the dangers of the “games as a service” model the hard way. Despite the success of the subscription-based Final Fantasy XIV, the publisher has squandered much of its goodwill with how terribly they have shoehorned the live service model into Marvel’s Avengers, Babylon’s Fall, and most recently, Chocobo GP. Not only has their reputation suffered in the eyes of the gaming community, who believe that Square Enix has lost touch with what they want, but it has put formidable developers such as Crystal Dynamics and PlatinumGames in a dangerously precarious position.

Chasing the Live-Service Dragon

Giving Square Enix some benefit of the doubt, it’s not the only company chasing the live-service trend, as gamers seem more and more inclined to accept the concept. Take a look at SteamDB and you’ll see live-service games atop the charts, including Lost Ark, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Rust, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Rocket League. That’s not even mentioning Fortnite, whose massive popularity has cemented the live-service model in the console arena. The lure of creating a game that has a persistent following, with a high number of concurrent users who can be convinced to purchase microtransactions and season passes for years, might be too strong for any large video game company with a profit motive to dismiss.

FFXIV Online Update 1.000.121

But there are numerous pitfalls when it comes to adapting the live-service model naturally embedded in MMORPGs into areas outside of that narrow genre, and Square Enix has seemingly stumbled into all of them. The company’s legacy is rooted in solid single-player RPGs, and that expertise shows in the Dragon Quest franchise and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. However, in 2017 CEO Yosuke Matsuda believed that the future of gaming rested primarily in live service games, and while he’s not off the mark in that regard, one false move can spell the end of any live-service title.

Similar to the mandate from Electronic Arts for its developers to begin integrating the live-service model regardless of the game at hand — must we remind ourselves of the tragedy that is BioWare’s Anthem — Square Enix has pushed and persuaded the developers within its wheelhouse to follow the trend. Moreover, the push was not to create a free-to-play live-service game, which is far more approachable and understandable to gaming audiences, but to make a fully-priced live-service game As Crystal Dynamics and PlatinumGames have little experience in this space, perhaps it’s not surprising that both Marvel’s Avengers and Babylon’s Fall failed. One can only imagine what those two developers could have done instead if the noose of live-service microtransactions weren’t around their proverbial necks.

Even Heroes Can’t Save Square Enix From Live Service

To start chronologically, Marvel’s Avengers actually has a fairly strong base as far as gameplay is concerned. Crystal Dynamics knows how to produce tight, intense combat with grounded characters from their years working on Tomb Raider. That said, having to incorporate the tired mechanics of the live-service model dragged the game down into a generic, loot-based brawler in a world where it’s difficult to believe that Marvel superheroes need to open chests and gather gear in the first place. Iron Man is a billionaire and genius engineer, so having him gather loot doesn’t really make sense.

Though Marvel’s Avengers had a variety of skills and heroes, it couldn’t compensate for a lack of polish and incompleteness. Just because a live-service game promises to have a continuous stream of content doesn’t mean that the base experience should feel like it’s in early beta, especially if you’re asking people to pay full price upfront. When Marvel’s Avengers launched, it had a lip-sync issues, audio glitches, and framerate drops. Worse, the combat was hampered by stun-locks, enemies who were simply bullet sponges, generic environments, and quest objectives that repeated themselves way too many times. The campaign felt cut short and the endgame progression felt deliberately long — both sacrifices on the altar of live service.

With such a shaky start, the downfall of Marvel’s Avengers had already been sealed. Matchmaking was already difficult at launch, so as the number of concurrent players dwindled, it only became more difficult. Some rewards from events were just re-colored skins and nameplates, sometimes even placed behind paywalls.

And then the developers had the brazen audacity of not only slowing the XP progression down, but then later releasing XP boosters as microtransactions, when it was promised on stage at E3 2019 that there would be none of these “pay-to-win scenarios” in the game. In protest, players rightfully left the game in droves and now Crystal Dynamics has had to pick up the pieces, its reputation in tatters.

A Live-Service Game Fallen Dead on Arrival

babylon's fall playstation demo

As for Babylon’s Fall, it’s a game both Square Enix and PlatinumGames wish to sweep under the rug. The game currently sits as one of the worst PlayStation console exclusive titles to date, with an average of a 42 on Metacritic (at the time of this writing). Babylon’s Fall is yet another title that asks for a full $60 while having a freemium economy with a grindy Battle Pass, but the issues with the game extend far beyond the live-service aspect (though that doesn’t help matters). With drawn-out cutscenes, bland art direction, and enemies that lack any sort of intelligent AI, it’s just not worth going through the campaign to reach to the supposedly better post-game.

If that weren’t enough, Babylon’s Fall introduces a type of premium currency called Garaz which you can use to purchase a host of cosmetic items. That’s acceptable, but you can also use Garaz to advance tiers in the Battle Pass as a shortcut, claiming rewards much faster than normal. To clear all tiers of the Battle Pass without having to do it the long way (by actually playing the game), you can spend more than $100 instead. It’s downright laughable.

Birds of a Feather Fail Together Too

But Babylon’s Fall surprisingly isn’t Square Enix’s most recent failure with live service games. That unfortunately goes to Chocobo GP on Nintendo Switch, a game that’s supposed to be a quaint modern adaptation of the classic Chocobo Racing on PlayStation. It’s a chibi racer where you can have Final Fantasy friends having a fun time around the track.

However, after you are lured into a false sense of security thinking that there can’t possibly be a live service bit for this full-priced game, you are suddenly met with microtransactions and prize passes and Gil and tickets and Mythril. With so many currencies, the game feels more like a mobile gacha game than a full-fledged console game. Worse yet, reviewers for Chocobo GP had no idea that the microtransactions would be this pervasive. They were purposely kept as much in the dark as unsuspecting players are. So it’s no surprise that the fan backlash on Reddit has been severe and harsh.

A Need for Change, Admitted

The only bright side to all of this is that after Marvel’s Avengers flopped — which I believe was part of the reason Guardians of the Galaxy fell short of sales expectations even though it’s a far superior game — Square Enix President Yousuke Matsuda admitted that their games-as-a-service strategy needed to be rethought in a recent annual report:

“While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented. How we go about creating new experiences by incorporating this trend into our game design is a key question that we will need to answer going forward.

…[T]aking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams.”

Unfortunately, Babylon’s Fall and Chocobo GP were already in the release pipeline well before Square Enix could realize their mistakes, though it seems they are reconsidering their overly aggressive push for live-service titles. Crystal Dynamics and PlatinumGames should be creating the type of single-player games they are meant to make. Square Enix needs to stop forcing developers to chase trends gratuitously, thinking that everything can be or needs to be Final Fantasy XIV. Even Electronic Arts has realized that Dragon Age 4 should ditch live service features after the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the failure of Anthem.

Square Enix needs to take a long pause on the live-service model, take a breath, and consider how best to match the model with the right design and the right developer. If Square Enix wants to create a full-priced live-service game that isn’t an MMORPG, the base experience needs to feel like a polished title right out of the gate, not a haphazard slap-dash game that feels like it’s still in early access.

Either that or go the free-to-play route, where players are far more forgiving about microtransactions. Look at Lost Ark for inspiration, if need be. In fact, both Babylon’s Fall and Chocobo GP would be more acceptable in their current states and be given a longer chance to improve over time if they were free-to-play in the first place.

Better yet, just put the live-service concept on the shelf for a few years and let Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Remake Part II continue to develop in single-player bliss. Give yourself a Phoenix Down, Square Enix, before live service drags you down into the abyss without any continues.

Report: Elden Ring Invaders Hack Alters Save File That Causes Infinite Falling & Death Loop on PC, Solution Outlined

It seems some PC gamers have turned to griefing to get their thrills in Elden Ring, as a new exploit has been spotted and it’s very bad one. A nasty Elden Ring invaders hack has surfaced, and it’s reported that these invaders alter the invadee’s save file that causes the character to fall constantly resulting in death.

Elden Ring Invaders Hack Save File – Infinite Falling & Death Loop Explanation and Fix:

What happens is, the hackers will corrupt your save file while you’re invaded, and your game will crash. Once you open it up and boot it again, your character will be infinitely falling to their death.

Twitter user Mordecai has a video of it happening:

Reddit user Draiganedig has also posted a warning for this, and what’s even better, has posted a solution that is confirmed to work!

Currently there is a hack doing the rounds whereby invaders will alter your save files in some way, causing you to enter a permanent, instant death-loop. There is seemingly no real fix for this, and so it is recommended to back up your saves as often as possible for the foreseeable future as a precaution.

That being said, and although I’m not on PC, I may have a potential solution for those affected by the hack:

  • Every time your game loads, you’ll get a split second before your “death”, and you must use it to press Alt + F4. This closes the game and allows you more time when you re-log back in to open your map.
  • When you re-login, open your map using whatever key it’s bound to (It’s the touchpad on the PS5), press the button that opens the list of available Sites of Grace (Triangle on PS5, Y on Xbox) and spam your confirm button (X on PS5, A on Xbox).

If done correctly, you should teleport safely to a Site of Grace. Back up any future saves just in case the hacks get more sophisticated.

It will undoubtedly take many tries and a lot of frustration to get it right, but I believe it’s the only current possible fix. Unfortunately it’s either that, or Try fingers, but hole.

Good luck, Tarnished.

The good news is that this method has worked for many people so far, which is nice. For those it’s not working for, just remember you have to Alt + F4 BEFORE you die. You only get a split second to time it correctly, and this allows you an extra second to open your map when you REOPEN your game, to hit that three button combination in rapid succession.

Remember: – Close game BEFORE your death – When game reloads, immediately press: – Open map – Triangle (PS5) / Y (Xbox) – X (PS5) / A (Xbox)

Very quickly. Good luck.

Hopefully, FromSoftware can patch this exploit out soon, as this can cause a lot of heartaches for those who spent a ton of hours leveling up. If you know anyone affected by it, share this solution to them. Speaking of patches, a new one was released yesterday (patch 1.04), which you can read about here.

Elden Ring Has Secret Walls, and One Takes 50 Hits to Break Down

In Elden Ring, FromSoftware made an effort to not spoonfeed everything to gamers. There’s no standard quest log, side mission markers and the like which are standard features found in most games today. However, it seems the developers have taken it up a notch, as there seems to be an Elden Ring secret wall that took 50 (!) hits to break down!

Found in a Taiwanese forum (shared by Reddit user teristam), check out the video of a hidden wall in the Volcanic mansion that only “opens” after 50 hits!

If you want to see the wall being hammered 50 times before it breaks, check the clip below.

Unfortunately, it’s not known whether this wall or any other secret wall needs accumulated damage before it breaks. Reddit user teristam mentions that they used a +9 Moonveil to break it but nothing happened, though he switched to a bare Dark Moon Greatsword with no upgrades and it broke after just 10 hits.

What we do know is, the type of weapon used does matter, as a greatsword will break the wall while a katana cannot.

What’s interesting here is: there are more walls like this in the game! Reddit user SpytheSnail checked another wall in the area and found another one!

Here’s evidence of the wall he broke down:

With this little secret now out in the open, I wouldn’t be surprised if players tried bashing random walls to see if they can open another secret area. Hopefully, there is one of these walls that hold a big secret (or a ton of items).

If you spot any secret in Elden Ring or anything interesting, share it with us by emailing tips@mp1st.com. We’ll credit you for the find, of course.

In other Elden Ring news, a new patch (version 1.04) was released yesterday, and you can read about it here.

Marvel’s Avengers Upcoming Update 2.3 Out Next Week, Brings War Table Rework and More

Marvel’s Avengers fans, something new is finally headed your way next week! The Marvel’s Avengers upcoming update 2.3 is out on March 24, and this brings a massive rework to the War Table, on-boarding and more.

Marvel’s Avengers Upcoming Update 2.3 Preview:

Drop Zones, Threat Sectors, and Hives

One of the first major changes you’ll notice when interacting with the War Table on March 24 is that missions no longer change every 15 minutes. Instead Drop Zones and Threat Sectors appear on the War Table at all times, and HIVES will appear once you have reached a power level comparable to the range of the region it is found in. Each region now has a minimum power level and a suggested max power level; moving on at the suggested max power level will take you on a tour from region to region as your strength increases:

  • Eastern Seaboard – power level 1-25
  • Pacific Northwest – power level 25-50
  • Utah Badlands – power level 50-75
  • Snowy Tundra – power level 75-100
  • Future Wastelands – power level 100-125
  • Wakanda – power level 100-140

Villain Sectors

Villain Sectors are now visible on the War Table without needing to grab the mission chain from Faction Mission Givers. Normal Villain Sectors Mission Chains rotate daily and are picked up per usual, while Elite Villain Sectors rotate weekly.

Vaults

Vaults are now always visible on the War Table; You no longer need to obtain coordinates to have Vaults appear. The related Daily Mission chain is acquired from the SHIELD terminal or mission giver. Elite Vaults rotate weekly.

HARM Rooms

Individual Hero HARM Rooms now have a minimum Power Level of 1. Versions of HARM Challenges I-V will become a part of the priority HARM rotation; they still exist as part of the HARM challenge mission chain but will no longer be visible once completed.

Other Changes

Flashback Missions that ended with a boss fight have been replaced with Wasteland and Wakanda Threat Sectors. No Flashback Mission should end with a Villain Sector boss fight now. Rise and Shine now requires players to complete a mission in Quickmatch. Heroic Mission Chains (previously known as Iconic Mission Chains) now only show on a per Hero basis.

New Missions

We’re also adding brand new missions to the War Table that you can hop into on March 24, including a new Vault and a Villain Sector.

  • This Hostile Earth– Threat Sector – Snowy Tundra
  • Desperate Times – Drop Zone – Future Wastelands
  • Cavorite Crash Site – Drop Zone – Future Wastelands
  • Blood from a Stone– Threat Sector – Future Wastelands
  • Wasteland Vault and Elite Wasteland Vault – Vault – Future Wastelands
  • Illusion of Truth and Unthinkable (Elite) – Taskmaster Villain Sector – Future Wastelands

Avengers Initiative Onboarding Rework

Nick Fury returns to the Helicarrier to guide newer players into the Avengers Initiative! You can speak to him at the War Table upon logging in to see what he’s been up to. In fact, he’ll replace JARVIS and Maria Hill’s narration in the beginning of the Avengers Initiative, during new tutorial videos, and in some missions. Although this is mainly for new players, existing players can go through this process with Nick Fury to catch up with him.

Quest/Mission Chain Onboarding Rework

Currently, there are a series of quests or mission chains that guide players to multiple mission types as a way of teaching new players how the Avengers Initiative works. Feedback has made it clear this can be confusing since there is minimal direction. The following changes will be made in Patch 2.3 to offer clarity and to properly explain the systems, missions, and how to begin your journey in the Avengers Initiative as you progress rather than one after another.

  • Reigning Supreme has been removed
  • Vault Onboarding has been removed
  • Hive Mind has been removed
  • The previous version of Cloning Around has been removed
  • Iconic Avengers unlocks when reaching power level 10
  • SHIELD Protocols unlocks when reaching power level 20
  • Beating the Odds unlocks when reaching power level 20
  • Inhuman Sanctuary unlocks when reaching power level 30
  • Last Avenger Standing unlocks when reaching power level 130
  • Mega Hive unlocks when reaching power level 130
  • Omega-Level Threat: Family Reunion unlocks when reaching power level 140
  • Discordant Sound Raid unlocks at power level 150
  • Elite Discordant Sound Raid unlocks at power level 160

Once the patch is out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Report: Steam Suspending Dev Payments to Russia, Belarus, & Even Ukraine Amidst Ongoing War

With the ongoing conflict still raging in Europe, there have been reports that Steam is suspending payments to developers in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, the three countries involved in the current war. At the time of writing, there has been one instance of the suspension, although by the looks of the response from Valve this may be the case with other developers based in these countries.

The report comes from user YellowAfterlife on Twitter, who is a developer themselves:

Update: Sergey Mohov, a developer at Remedy, brought up other instances of the blocked payments.

In the current climate of the game industry showing their support for Ukraine as they weather the ongoing invasion, it’s a bit baffling to see the country be included in the suspension from Steam. It’s unknown if this now applies to all Ukrainian developers on Steam as well, and if the PC storefront will offer an alternative solution in the future.

A Question Quest Step

What’s a Xûr?

Xûr, Agent of the Nine, is a strange vendor who randomly appears in a Public Sector on one of the Worlds. Xûr sells Exotic equipment and only takes Legendary Shards in exchange for them.

TL;DR: He’s the Santa Claus of Destiny and every weekend is Christmas. Sometimes he brings you what you want, sometimes he brings you coal. Mostly it’s coal.

When does Xûr visit?

Xûr visits every Friday at 17:00 UTC and departs at Weekly Reset (Tuesday 17:00 UTC). If you would like to see all the live conversions of Time Zones, please follow this link here.

Thanks, Reddit!
